Violent shaking when driving at high speeds and after hitting bumps or uneven streets

Aug 11, 2025

The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-250. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission imploded while shifting into first gear with the powertrain warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.

transfer case is shifting from 2 wheel high to 4 wheel high while driving down the highway. it does not engage the the 4wheel drive front hubs when doing this so no indication this is happening. eventually the shift fork breaks and transfer case is then either locked in 4 wheel high without knowing or the transfer case goes to a neutral position and loss of all power. in the my incident i was driving on the interstate and transfer case went to neutral without warning. i was in the middle of 4 lanes of traffic and total loss of movement. i was able to navigate the truck to the side of the interstate safely. however had this been in the middle of rush hour traffic this would most likely been a fatality report with multiple cars involved. After discussions with ford techs i was advised this is an ongoing issue that has not been addressed by ford and they are seeing more and more of these issues, so much so that their transmission techs are backed up for 3-5 weeks with these repairs. seems to me this kind of failure nhtsa would be very aware of and demanding a recall be issued to fix this issue. rather the owners are eating the cost of repair for a blatant safety issue being over looked.

I was driving at 60mph when the truck started shaking so bad I had to come to a complete stop. I could barley steer the truck when this was happening.

Nov 19, 2023

TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS ON THE INTERSTATE THE TRUCK BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN SHAKING SO HARD THAT I HAD DIFFICULTY HOLDING ONTO IT. THE TRUCK WAS OUT OF CONTROL AND I ALMOST WENT INTO THE GUARD RAIL BEFORE I COULD SLOW DOWN TO A STOP AND BRING THE TRUCK UNDER CONTROL. I MADE IT TO MY DESTINATION AND LOOKED AT THE UNDERSIDE OF THE TRUCK AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING BROKEN. ON THE WAY BACK HOME, THE TRUCK DID THE SAME THING AGAIN AFTER HITTING A BUMP AND I HAD TO STOP AGAIN TO GET THE STEERING WHEEL TO STOP SHAKING - WHICH WAS VERY CONCERNING BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC I WAS IN. THERE WAS NO WARNING EITHER TIME THAT THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. GOING TO THE DEALERSHIP TOMORROW!

We have the Ford "death wobble"—have had a few scary incidents on the freeway at speeds 50 or above.

Jan 17, 2023

I was driving approximately 60 mph. There were several small bumps in the road and the Truck went into a Very Violent Shake and Wobble. This is commonly known as the FORD DEATH WOBBLE... Very Scary and Dangerous. The Vehicle was extremely hard to control. Luckily the service advisor at Coggin Ford had warned me about this possible condition. I was told if this wobble ever happened to let immediately back off the accelerator and not Touch the Brakes?? I did exactly as he said and was able to get the truck into the Emergency Lane where I slowed down in a slow and dangerous way. I took the Truck to Coggin Ford. The truck has only 21000 miles. They claim it just needs an alignment and a steering Dampener which was already changed by Ford at 2500 miles? The service department told me that the parts are unavailable but the think it needs an alignment? The alignment was fine until the Death Wobble?? This is a dangerous condition that could have killed myself, my daughter or other drivers... Please let me know what the NHTSA is doing to prevent this from causing accidents and let me know what my options are... Thank you, Philip Monson 904-487-8936

We started having a death wobble while driving between 60-70mph where the steering wheel shook Violently and the vehicle shook so back it hurt and scared me and my kids in the back seat. It was very scary and almost caused me to wreck with my kids in the car on the interstate. We then looked up and saw there was a recall for this problem. We took the truck into a dealership and got it supposedly repaired. It did not work. Roughly 1 month later. I was trusting Ford fixed the issue and on the interstate again and almost wrecked a second time with the kids in the car. This truck shouldn’t be allowed on the road of ford doesn’t have a fix. My business partner has the exact same truck and the exact same scenario occurred where he got the issue fixed at a dealership after almost crashing only to have it happen again. Currently we don’t know what to do as we paid big bucks for a vehicle that isn’t safe to drive,

AT 60-70 MPH THE FRONT END BEGINS A SERIES OF VIOLENT SHIMMY OR WOBBLES. IT IS A RECURRING ISSUE. THE SERVICE TECHS REFER TO IT AS THE DEATH WOBBLE. i WAS TOLD IT NEEDED A STEERING GEAR REPLACE INITIALLY. TODAY I WAS TOLD IT WAS A STEERING DAMPNER. I HAD THE TRUCK EVALUATED ON 5/26/22 AT PHIL LONG FORD AT MOTOR CITY WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS "WOBBLE" COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF CONTROL AND JEOPADIZE MY SAFTEY AS WELL AS ANY FAMILY MEMBERS THAT MAY BE TRAVELING WITH ME

May 9, 2022

My husband and I were driving 70mph, the speed limit was 75mph. Our truck encountered a bump in the road and then began to shake violently. My husband immediately let off the gas and pulled to the side of the road but the truck continued to violently shake until it reached about 45mph. On the same day while driving down the interstate the truck encountered another bump in the road and did the same thing. My husband could not stop or control the truck from shaking. We were lucky there were not many other vehicles around us or it could have caused an accident. The truck only has 18,000 miles on it.

While driving on the interstate between 60 to 65mph truck would experience an uncontrolled wobble of the front end. Vehicle would become unstable at speed, and immediate deceleration would have to occur to recover from this. This would occur at random times, of either hitting a bump in the road, or change in road surface. My safety and safety of others was/will be put at risk but this unexpected and uncontrollable vehicle reaction. Vehicle will be taken to dealer to be inspected for issues. Vehicle is a 2019 with only 11,000 miles on it. No warning lights, messages or symptoms before and during incidents. First appeared this week while driving on interstate. Did research about this and appears to be called "Death Wobble"

On the morning of June 18, 2021 while my pregnant wife was driving down the highway our 2019 f250 began to violently shaking to the point she believed she was going to lose control of the vehicle with her and our three kids in the back seat. Luckily she made out of the Highway safely only to be stranded for over three hours. The vehicle was towed to Peques Ford where hopefully the can determine the malfunction/defect in a timely manner due to the fact that she is now stranded 8 hours away from our home in Florida. From research and from a gentleman that was driving beside my wife when the malfunction occurred believe that it’s what some people call the Ford “death wobble.”

AFTER ENGINE OIL CHANGE AT DEALER, TECH ADVISED OF POSSIBLE BAD TRANSMISSION PAN GASKET. TOOK BACK TO DEALER AND THEY SUPPOSEDLY FIX PROBLEM COMING FROM TORQUE CONVERTER SEAL. GOT HOME AND INSPECTED IT AND FOUND SAME LEAK. CALLED DEALER AND TOOK BACK IN. AFTER FURTHER INSPECTION DETERMINED LEAK COMING FROM TRANSFER CASE AND TRANSMISSION. ORDERED MORE SEALS AND O RINGS. PARTS ON BACK ORDER FOR A MONTH. TECH NOT SURE WHERE LEAK IS COMING FROM. 2019 F250 ONLY HAS 14800 MILES.

WHILE DRIVING AT REGULATED HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE TRUCK WILL DEVELOP A VIOLENT, UNCONTROLLABLE SHAKING WHEN ANY "NORMAL" ROADWAY BUMP OR HOLE IS STRUCK. THE TRUCK LUNGES VIOLENTLY AND IS DIFFICULTY TO CONTROL. RAPID DECELERATION IS REQUIRED BY REMOVING FOOT FROM ACCELERATOR & GENTLY APPLYING BRAKES. THE VEHICLE'S SPEED MUST BE REDUCED TO LESS THAN AN ESTIMATED 20MPH AND SOMETIMES STOPPED BEFORE THE VIOLENT SHAKING STOPS. INTERSTATE TRAVEL IS IMPOSSIBLE AS MOST ROADWAY IMPERFECTIONS CAN CAUSE THIS VIOLENT SHAKING WHILE TRAVELING AT 70MPH. FORD IS AWARE OF THIS CONDITION AND MERELY REPLACED A FRONT STEERING STABILIZER WHICH ONLY REDUCED THE FREQUENCY OF THE PROBLEM AND DID NOT CORRECT THE ISSUE. FORD TECHNICIANS DO NOT KNOW HOW TO FIX AND ONLY CITE THAT THEY WILL ONCE AGAIN REPLACE THE STEERING STABILIZER. THE FRONT STEERING COMPONENTS ARE SEEING SERIOUS PREMATURE WEAR/DAMAGE TO THE VIOLENT SHAKING. THIS ISSUE WILL CAUSE FATALITIES...AND MOST LIKELY HAS IF PROPERLY INVESTIGATED DUE TO LOSS OF CONTROL ASSOCIATED WITH THIS APTLY NAMED "DEATH WOBBLE" THIS PROBLEM HAS NOW CONTINUALLY OCCURRED OVER A PERIOD OF 3 MONTHS ON A NEW F250 WHICH HAS 18,XXX MILES. THE PROBLEM BEGAN WITH ONLY 13,XXX MILES ON THE VEHICLE. FORD HAS NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM AND SENDS CUSTOMERS BACK ONTO ROADS WITH A VEHICLE WHICH IS UNCONTROLLABLE IN NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS... AND WILL RESULT IN LOSING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THIS PROBLEM BEGAN IN 2020 & CONTINUES TO DATE. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE WAS AT A SPEED OF 50MPH AND CONTINUES TO OCCUR FROM 55 -70MPH

WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN DOWNSHIFTING GOING STRAIGHT FROM 5TH TO 1ST AND COMING TO A STOP IN THE HIGHWAY. AFTER STOPPING, IT WOULD NOT MOVE WHEN PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL. THERE WERE NO WARNING OR CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS BEFORE OR AFTER IT STOPPED.

IT HAPPEN AROUND 1815, WHEN I EXPERIENCE THE DEATH WOBBLE, THE TRUCK VIOLENTLY STARTED SHAKING AND IT WAS FELTED ON THE FRONT END OF MY FORD F250 SUPER DUTY TRUCK. IT OCCUR AT A SPEED OF 65 MILES PER HOUR. WHILE DRIVING ON THE OVER PASS OF THE FREEWAY AND GOING OVER THE GROOVE IN THE ROAD. IT WAS A FRIGHTENING INCIDENT OF ALMOST LOSING CONTROL OF MY TRUCK. IF THEIR WHERE LOTS OF VEHICLE ON THE ROAD A SERIOUS ACCIDENT OR INJURIES COULD HAVE OCCURRED. I TRY TO STOP AND MADE MATTERS WORST SO I QUICKLY LET IT SLOW WAY DOWN UNTIL IT ALMOST CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY. TODAY I CALL THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF THE ISSUE BUT NO RECALLS. THE DEALER NEEDS TO COME UP WITH A SATISFACTORY WAY TO END THE PROBLEM. BEFORE LIFE ARE LOST. THANKS

VEHICLE MILEAGE WAS ~23,500. WHILE TOWING A GOOSENECK TRAILER THAT I HAD PREVIOUSLY TOWED SEVERAL TIMES, ON I-74 ON WET PAVEMENT, SPEED 70 MPH THE STEERING WHEEL AND VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AFTER DRIVING OVER A BUMP IN THE ROAD. THE VIBRATION FREQUENCY WAS PROBABLY SOMETHING LIKE 4 HZ. I GRADUALLY SLOWED THE VEHICLE WITH SUSTAINED VIBRATIONS OCCURRING UNTIL SPEED WAS APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH. I STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND INSPECTED ALL TRUCK AND TRAILER TIRES AND THE STEERING LINKAGE BUT I COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING ABNORMAL. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THE TRUCK WAS STILL SAFE TO DRIVE. THIS PHENOMENON REOCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE NEXT 15 MILES. THIS WAS EASILY THE MOST VIOLENT SHAKING AND FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE DUE TO A VEHICLE MALFUNCTION I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. IN WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS, I SUSPECT I WOULD HAVE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I COMPLETED THE TRIP AT SPEEDS UNDER 60 MPH AND THE VIBRATIONS DID NOT RETURN. ONCE I UNHOOKED FROM THE TRAILER, THE VIBRATIONS RETURNED DRIVING DOWN A TOWNSHIP ROAD AT 55 MPH. EACH TIME THIS OCCURS, IT IS STARTED BY DRIVING OVER A BUMP IN THE ROAD. THE FREQUENCY AND AMPLITUDE OF THE VIBRATIONS ARE CONSTANT WHILE DECREASING VEHICLE SPEED UNTIL THE VIBRATIONS STOP, TYPICALLY AROUND 30-40 MPH. TO DATE I HAVE RECEIVED NO NOTIFICATIONS OF RECALLS RELATED TO THIS PHENOMENON. THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED THIS TRUCK FROM STATED THAT THEY HAD "HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM IN SOME 2017 MODELS, BUT NEVER IN A 2019 MODEL." THIS TRUCK IS PRIMARILY HIGHWAY DRIVEN. IT IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE THAT ANY SUSPENSION COMPONENTS SHOULD WEAR ENOUGH TO CAUSE A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE IN LESS THAN 25,000 MILES. FORD SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING THIS ISSUE.

TRANSMISSION FAILURE WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE DOING 70MPH. VEHICLE ROLLED TO A STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. NO POWER TO MOVE FORWARD OR BACK. THE VEHICLE WAS PLACED INTO PARK AND THE 4WD INDICATOR WAS MOVED FROM 2WD TO 4WD. THE VEHICLE DIDN'T MOVE FORWARD OR BACK. ENGINE RUNNING, NO WARNING LIGHTS, ALL GAUGES IN GOOD STATUS. TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF FOR 5 MINS AND BACK ON, NO CHANGES. VEHICLE DEAD IN THE WATER. *TR

VEHICLE SHAKES UNCONTROLLABLY FROM THE FRONT END AT 70MPH. USUALLY OCCURS AFTER HITTING A BUMP OR UNEVEN LANES ON THE HIGHWAY. STEERING WHEEL SHAKES SO HARD THAT ANYTHING ON THE DASH OR CENTER CONSOLE FALLS TO THE FLOOR BOARD, CHANCES OF ITEMS LANDING BEHIND BRAKE PEDAL OR GAS PEDAL. *TR

DRIVING ON A FREEWAY THE ENTIRE TRUCK STARTED TO SHAKE AND VIBRATE AS IF WE WERE DRIVING ON THE WORST ROAD POSSIBLE AND ALL 4 TIRES HAD JUST BLOWN OUT. WE WERE ABLE TO KEEP CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND SLOW DOWN UNTIL WE COULD PULL OFF THE ROAD AND STOP. DURING OUR TRIP, THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED 4 DIFFERENT TIMES IN THE 2 DAYS WE TRAVELED. WE WERE ABLE TO FINALLY RETURN HOME AND TAKE THE TRUCK TO OUR FORD DEALER. WE WERE TOLD THAT FORD HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND HAS A "TEMPORARY" FIX TO CHANGE THE "STEERING LINKAGE DAMPER" BUT WILL TAKE AT LEAST 4 WEEKS BEFORE THE PART COMES IN. MY VEHICLE IS ONLY ONE YEAR OLD WITH ONLY 4,000 MILES ON IT. WE RESEARCHED THIS AND IT IS KNOWN AS THE "DEATH WOBBLE" AND HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR YEARS ON THE F250 AND F350, YET I WAS SOLD THIS VEHICLE A YEAR AGO AND I HAVE NEVER RECEIVED ANY RECALL INFORMATION OR MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND WILL LEAD TO SOMEONE HAVING A SERIOUS ACCIDENT OR EVEN DEATH.
