I WAS DRIVING ON A TWO LANE BACK ROAD AROUND 45 TO 50 MPH, AND MY TRUCK STARTED VIOLENTLY SHAKING AND I LOST ALL CONTROL OF STEERING. I WENT INTO THE ONCOMING LANE, LUCKILY NO ONE WAS COMING, AND HAD TO HIT MY BRAKES HARD TO GET THE SHAKING TO STOP. IT HAS ALSO HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 35-40 ON A CITY STREET AND 60 MPH ON A HIGHWAY. THIS IS KNOWN AS DEATH WOBBLE. THE WOBBLE WAS SO BAD THAT IT LOOSENED THE TRACK BAR AND THE BOLT HOLDING THE POWER STEERING HARD LINE. I LOST ALL POWER STEERING FLUID WITHIN SECONDS. I HAVE RESEARCHED IT, TRIED REPLACING SEVERAL PARTS, LIKE TIE-RODS, AND IT HAS LESSENED A LITTLE BIT, BUT IF I HIT A BUMPY ROAD OR EVEN JUST A PATCH OF NEW PAVEMENT, IT STARTS SHAKING. I HAVE READ A LOT OF OTHER FORD OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THIS SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR TRUCKS.

I HAVE A 2005, CREW CAB, SHORT BED, 6.0 DIESEL F-350. WHEN DRIVING AT 55-75MPH ON THE HIGHWAY, I PASSED A SMALL BUMP TRIGGERING A RIGOROUS SHAKING OF THE FRONT END. I COULD NOT APPLY BRAKES RAPIDLY, AND THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO SHAKE. I BARELY HAD CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, BUT AFTER FINALLY SLOWING DOWN TO A STOP THE SHAKING STOPPED. IT WAS VERY DANGEROUS, AND HAS HAPPENED 6 TIMES SINCE AT 55-75MPH. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD F-350. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ACTIVATED AT 75 MPH. THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED AN ABNORMALLY LOUD EXPLOSION FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT PULLED AND WAS UNABLE TO FIND ANY PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. ONE HOUR LATER, THE NOISE RECURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE FAILURE CAME FROM THE TIE RODS AND COIL SPRINGS. THE CONTACT SPOKE WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE FAILURE WAS COMMON AND THERE WAS AN ALIGNMENT ISSUE, BUT WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 42,000.

I'VE HAD MANY INSTANCES WHERE I HAD TO GET THE TRUCK TO THE SHOULDER TO PREVENT BEING HIT FROM BEHIND OR SIDE SWIPED AND STILL GET THE TRUCK DOWN TO 25 MPH TO GET IT TO QUIT. STARTED SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, FOUND ONLINE THAT IT IS NOT TOO UNCOMMON AND NEVER KNEW WHERE TO GO UNTIL NOW. I AM SCARED TO DRIVE THIS TRUCK, HOWEVER, IT IS MY ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION TO WORK ETC. I OWN A 2005 FORD F-350 4X4 6.0 DIESEL. IT HAS 63,000 MILES ON IT. ON MANY OCCASIONS THE STEERING WHEEL HAS SHIMMIED OR OSCILLATED VIOLENTLY TO THE POINT I ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE TRUCK. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. WHEN THE FRONT WHEELS HIT A BUMP OR POTHOLE, WITH A VERY SMALL AMOUNT OF TURNING THE VEHICLE TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT SUCH AS GOING AROUND A CURVE, THE FRONT WHEELS HAVE STARTED TO VIOLENTLY SHIMMY OR OSCILLATE CAUSING THE STEERING WHEEL TO VIOLENTLY SHIMMY BACK AND FORTH. THIS USUALLY OCCURS AT SPEEDS ABOVE 40 MPH. FOUR TIMES I HAVE ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE TRUCK. ONCE THE TRUCK TURNED LEFT INTO AN ONCOMING LANE BUT FORTUNATELY THERE WHERE NO ONCOMING VEHICLES AT THAT MOMENT. I HAD TO SLOW DOWN TO ABOUT 25-30 MPH AND MOVE TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE ESPECIALLY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC OR ON TWO LANE MOUNTAIN ROADS. I ORIGINALLY COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN FEBRUARY 2005, AND WAS TOLD THE TRUCK WAS WITHIN SPECS AND THERE WAS NOTHING TO BE DONE. I REQUEST THE NHTSA LOOK INTO THIS. I HAVE DISCUSSED THIS WITH OTHER OWNERS AND THEY TOO HAVE HAD SIMILAR LOSS OF CONTROL PROBLEMS FROM STEERING WHEEL SHIMMY OR OSCILLATION. I BELIEVE THERE ARE OTHER TRUCKS THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR

ONLY WAY TO STOP IT IS TO COME TO IMMEDIATE COMPLETE STOP. VERY SCARY ON THE FREEWAY. SHAKING STRONG ENOUGH THAT ANYTHING ON DASHBOARD OR CONSOLE IS THROWN TO FLOOR, STEERING WHEEL IS ALMOST PULLED FROM HANDS IF YOU DON'T GRAB ON TIGHT. HAPPENS IRREGULARLY AND WITHOUT NOTICE. FORD HAD BEEN UNWILLING TO FIX, SAYS THAT I CHANGED PARTS TO AFTER MARKET AND WILL NOT LOOK AT IT. I TOLD THEM PROBLEM STARTED BEFORE PARTS CHANGE AND THAT PARTS CHANGE WAS IN ATTEMPT TO FIX. THAT WAS OVER A YEAR AGO.. NOW I FIND OUT IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING WITH MANY SIMILAR VEHICLES, RECEIVED A LETTER FROM FORD AND NOW THEY ARE WILLING TO TAKE A LOOK.. I CHANGED SHOCKS, RADIUS ARMS, SPRINGS, HAD ALIGNMENT, NO CHANGE. SLIGHT RELIEF WHEN I CHANGED TIRES (SAME SPEC AS MANUFACTURERS), BUT AFTER 8-12 MONTHS WEAR, 8000 MILES, SHAKING BACK AGAIN. STARTED SHAKING AT APPROX. 12,000 MILES. TRUCK NOW HAS 32,000 MILES. *TR

THIS PROBLEM IS NOT ISOLATED TO A PARTICULAR DAY OR A PARTICULAR INCIDENT; IT IS A CHRONIC PROBLEM THAT HAPPENS WHEN MY VEHICLE HITS A HOLE IN THE PAVEMENT OR A HARD BUMP WHEN TRAVELING AT 50 MPH OR MORE. MY VEHICLE IS A 2005 FORD F350 4X4 AND THE FRONT END BEGINS TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND IN MY OPINION COULD CAUSE A HEAD ON COLLISION. I HAVE SPOKEN TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. THEY OFFERED TO INSTALL A HEAVIER DUTY STEERING STABILIZER, WHICH WOULD COST ME 380.00, WHICH THEY SAY USUALLY HELPS THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A DESIGN FLAW BY FORD, AND THEY ARE DRAGGING THEIR FEET BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT TO ADMIT THE PROBLEM OR PAY FOR THEIR MISTAKE. SOMEONE WILL SURELY BE KILLED, DUE TO THIS PROBLEM, AND THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO TAKE STEPS TO MAKE SURE THESE TRUCKS ARE FIXED BY FORD AT FORD'S EXPENSE. I HAVE HAD THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER MANY TIMES FOR THIS PROBLEM WITHOUT RESOLUTION. I RECENTLY RECEIVED A LETTER FROM FORD ABOUT THIS "SHIMMY" PROBLEM. THE LETTER RECOMMENDS MAINTAINING TIRE PRESSURE. TODATE THAT HAS NOT RESOLVED MY PROBLEM. AT ONE POINT, I REPLACED ALL THE TIRES ON THE TRUCK AT THE DEALER (THEY TOLD ME THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE WAY THEY WERE WEARING) BUT WITH NEW TIRES AND THE PROPER INFLATION, THE PROBLEM STILL OCCURRED. AS YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY AWARE THERE IS A PROBLEM, I THINK YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT THE TIRES ARE NOT THE SOLE CAUSE AS IT HAS NOT FIXED MY VEHICLE. *TR

MY FORD F-350 HAS SEVERE VIBRATION AND STEERING ISSUES. I RECEIVED THE LETTER ABOUT THESE ISSUES APRIL 2009. SHORTLY THERE AFTER WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY AT 65MPH THE TRUCK STARTED VIBRATING UNCONTROLLABLE. ABOUT THE TIME I GOT IT SLOWED DOWN I HEARD A LOUD POP IN THE PASSENGERS SIDE FRONT END. THIS WAS ABOUT APRIL 25 2009. ON MAY 14 2009 I WENT TO FORD FOR MY OIL CHANGE. THEY DISCOVERED THE FRONT PASSENGERS UNIVERSAL JOINT IS BROKEN. I WAS NOT IN FOUR WHEEL DRIVE WHEN THIS LOUD POP OCCURRED. BUT I DID ALMOST LOSE CONTROL PRIOR TO HEARING IT POP, MY SPEED AT THE TIME OF POP WAS ABOUT 35MPH. I KEEP THE TIRE PRESSURE UP, BY CHECKING IT ALMOST EVERY TIME I ADD FUEL. AND THE TIRES ARE CHECKED AT EACH OIL CHANGE, EVERY 3,000 MILES. THE LETTER I RECEIVED FROM FORD, SAYS TO CHECK TIRE PRESSURE. THE TIRE PRESSURE WAS GOOD WHEN I CHECKED IT SHORTLY AFTER HEARING THE UNIVERSAL JOINT POP. THE SIZE OF TIRE IS THE SAME AS THE ONES INSTALLED AT THE FACTORY. I DO NOT HAVE ANY SUSPENSION MODIFICATIONS. AFTER THE FORD DEALER TOLD ME I NEED A NEW UNIVERSAL JOINT, I TOOK THE TRUCK TO ANOTHER ALIGNMENT SHOP. HE HAD A F250 HE WAS WORKING ON THAT HAD ABOUT THE SAME THING HAPPEN. AND TOLD ME THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING ALOT. AFTER WHICH I CALLED FORD, THEY WILL NOT WARRANTY THE ISSUE, ALTHOUGH IT SOUNDED TO ME THAT THE OPERATORS WERE WELL AWARE THESE TRUCKS SHIMMY AND THEN POP THERE UNIVERSAL JOINTS. I AM FEARFUL TO DRIVE THE TRUCK, AS I THINK NEXT TIME I MAY LOSE ALL CONTROL. FORD WILL NOT WARRANTY THE ISSUE BECAUSE THE WARRANTY IS EXPIRED, BUT THE OPERATORS TOLD ME I SHOULD SELL IT, AS THEY HAVE LOTS OF COMPLAINTS LIKE THIS. TRUCK CURRENTLY HAS 34,000 MILES AND THE PROBLEM IS STILL HAPPENING. I CALLED FORD CUSTOMER CARE TODAY BECAUSE I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THEM ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY DOCUMENTED THE PROBLEM, BUT BECAUSE THE TRUCK IS OUT OF WARRANTY I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR IT TO BE FIXED. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT I STARTED TAKING MY TRUCK INTO THE FORD DEALERSHIP BACK IN 2006 TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM ADDRESSED. VEHICLE HAS BEEN INSPECTED BY ONE INDEPENDENT SHOP AND ONE FORD DEALERSHIP (WHERE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED). NEITHER COULD IDENTIFY THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. TRUCK IS STOCK WITH NO MODIFICATIONS. MOST RECENT EVENTS OCCURRED TWO CONSECUTIVE DAYS TRAVELING INTERSTATE 65 BETWEEN NASHVILLE AND SOUTHERN KENTUCKY. TWO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS, ONE NORTHBOUND AND ONE SOUTHBOUND. *TR

IN JANUARY OF 2006, WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH OR MORE, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHIMMY AND JUMP ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHEN MAKING LEFT TURNS. THE DEALER STATED THAT BOLTS WERE MISSING AND THE SHOCK MOUNTS FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. HE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE TIRES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AFTER REPLACING THE TIRES, A FRONT STABILIZER WAS INSTALLED ON THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED SINCE THE LAST INCIDENT. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS AND THEY WERE NOT LIABLE FOR THE REPAIRS. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 61,635 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,000. UPDATED 10/21/08. *JB

I KNOW FOR A FACT THIS SITUATION WITH THIS STEERING PROBLEM FAR EXCEEDS ANYTHING FORD IS WILLING TO ADMIT. MY CASE; I HAVE OWNED MY 2005 FORD F-350 KING RANCH 4X4, VIN #, SENSE FEBRUARY 11, 2005. THIS TRUCK HAS EARNED ITS TWO NICKNAMES, RHUBARB EXPRESS AND #!*% PIECE OF #@^%$. THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT A NIGHTMARE FOR OUR FAMILY. MY WIFE AND I CAN'T BEGIN TO COUNT HOW MANY TIMES THIS TRUCK HAS GONE OUT OF CONTROL AND LEFT US IN THE DITCH. WE HAVE LOST CONTROL OF THIS TRUCK NEARLY EVERY TIME EITHER ONE OF US HAS DRIVEN IT. TYPICAL SITUATION, WE ARE DRIVING ALONG THE FREEWAY AT A SAFE SPEED. WE MIGHT FEEL A LITTLE BUMP ON THE ROAD THEN THE STEERING WHEEL STARTS TO SHIMMY THEN BEGINS TO PULL FROM YOUR HANDS IN A HARD SHIMMY. FROM THE TIME YOU HIT THE BUMP TO THE TIME THE TRUCK IS RIPPING YOUR HANDS FROM THE STEERING WHEEL IS LESS THE 2 SECONDS. THE OSCILLATIONS ARE MORE THE 90 DEGREES FROM SIDE TO SIDE ON THE STEERING WHEEL. THESE OSCILLATIONS WILL CONTINUE FROM YOUR ORIGINAL DRIVING SPEED UNTIL THE TRUCK IS BROUGHT TO A COMPLETE STOP. THIS USUALLY MEANS DRIVING OFF THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY OR ROAD ONTO THE SHOULDER. ON MANY OCCASIONS THERE IS NO SHOULDER AND WE HAVE STOPPED IN THE ROAD. ON OTHER OCCASIONS WE HAVE HAD TO STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY AS THERE WERE SEMI TRUCKS IN THE SLOW LANE. I MEAN 65 TO 0 MILES AN HOUR IN THE MIDDLE OF A LOS ANGELES FREEWAY! WE ALSO HAVE COUNTLESS MEMORIES OF SLIDING TO A STOP IN THE RHUBARB, DUST FLYING, OFF THE EDGE OF THE FREEWAY. ALL WHILE CALLING FORD AND BEGGING THEM TO FIX IT! THE TRUCK STILL SHAKES , BOUNCES , SHIMMIES AND HOPS. I AM FORCED TO BUY ANOTHER VEHICLE (NEVER FORD AGAIN). TWO MONTHS AGO THE SHOCK ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FRACTURED. A WELDING SHOP DETERMINED THE PROBLEM WAS A BAD WELD JOINT.
