ENGINE DID NOT KICK OUT OF REGIN CAUSEING OVER HEAT

I NOTICED A PLUM OF WHITE SMOKE OUT THE TAIL PIPE. THAT INDICATED STEAM, WATER IN THE SYSTEM TO ME. ALL THE GAUGES WERE NORMAL AND I STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND CHECKED THE FLUID LEVELS. NO OBVIOUS PROBLEM. I CALLED MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY COULD NOT GET IT IN FOR 36 HOURS. I DROVE IT .4 MILES HOME AND PARKED IT. AT THE APPOINTED TIME I DROVE TO NORTH COUNTRY FORD. IT TOOK THEM ANOTHER DAY TO FIND THE DIESEL MECHANIC WHO COULD WORK ON THE VEHICLE. 24 HOURS LATER I AM TOLD THE ENGINE IS BLOWN; FLUID GOT INTO THE MANIFOLD AND WAS SUCKED INTO THE # 3 CYLINDER. DEPENDING ON THE AMOUNT OF PARTS THAT COULD BE SALVAGED THE COST OF REPLACEMENT COULD EXCEED $ 12,000. THIS VEHICLE HAS 95,000 MILES ON IT. IT HAS HAD TOW OTHER INCIDENTS WITH THE ENGINE AND DRIVE TRAIN: IN DECEMBER OF LAST YEAR, IN PREPARATION FOR A TRIP TO ARIZONA I HAD THE TRANSMISSION SERVICED. ABOUT 1400 MILES LATER THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO SLIP WHEN WE ENCOUNTERED ANY HILLS OR MOUNTAINS. I PARKED THE TRAILER AND TOOK THE TUCK TO CASSA FORD. THEY HAD THE TRUCK FOR 4 DAYS AND $ 1600.00 WORTH OF REPAIRS. I ASKED IF ANYTHING DONE AT THE TIME IT WAS SERVICE OR THE DRIVING FROM THE FIRST SIGN OF TROUBLE HAD CAUSED OR EXACERBATED THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID NO, IT WAS A PUMP PROBLEM. IN 2011, IT BEGAN TO BLOW BLACK SMOKE OUT THE TAILPIPE; THE DASH SCREEN INDICATED IT WAS CLEANING THE EXHAUST. WITHIN 5 MINUTES THE ENGINE SPUTTERED AND DIED. I CALLED FORD I WAS TOLD TO WAIT AN HOUR AND TRY TO RESTART THE VEHICLE; GIVE THE ENGINE AN OPPORTUNITY TO 'RE-SET' ITSELF. THAT DIDN'T WORK! A TOW WAS SENT AND THE VEHICLE TOWED TO NELSON FORD DEALER IN FERGUS FALLS, MINNESOTA. IT WAS A FAILED EGR VALVE. THE REPAIR WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.

SHORTLY AFTER THE TRUCK IS UP TO OPERATING TEMPERATURE A CONSTANT PLUME OF WHITE SMOKE CONTINUOUSLY EMITS FROM THE EXHAUST. FUEL ECONOMY HAS HAD A SUBSTANTIAL LOSS. DURING LOWER LEVELS (1/4 OR LOWER LEVELS OF DIESEL) OF FUEL CAPACITY THE ENGINE WILL STALL AND DIE UPON TAKE OFF. ATTEMPTING TO RESTART AFTERWARDS WAS VERY DIFFICULT. DURING THIS PROCESS A "WRENCH" APPEARS ON THE DASH AND THAT'S ABOUT IT. I HAVE NOT CHECKED "CODES" YET AND THE CHECK ENGINE LITE IN ON.

SUDDEN VEHICLE ACCELERATION DURING SLOWING/BRAKING. REGISTERED OVER 4000 RPM AT APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH WITH BRAKES FULLY DEPRESSED AND WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO STOP WHICH ALMOST LED TO A REAR END COLLISION. AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP, VEHICLE WAS PUT INTO PARK AND ENGINE SLOWLY DECREASED FROM RACING AND WENT TO NORMAL RPM OPERATING RANGE AT IDLE WITHIN SECONDS. *TR

EXHAUST TEMPERATURE SENSOR WILL CAUSE A CRASH THAT MAY END UP KILLING SOMEONE. THIS IS WHAT FAILED ON MY WIFE WHO WAS PULLING A 28' HORSE TRAILER WITH HER SHOW HORSE INSIDE WORTH OVER $30,000 DOLLARS. SHE MERGED TO A ONE LANE ROAD ON INTERSTATE 68 IN MARYLAND HEADING DOWN HILL WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ONE SOON TO FOLLOW WITH A MESSAGE OF PULL OVER SAFELY. 20 SECONDS LATER, THE ENGINE SHUTOFF. THIS CAUSED HER TO LOSE POWER STEERING ON A ONE LANE ROAD GOING OVER A BRIDGE DOWN HILL PULLING A HORSE TRAILER WITH A GROSS WEIGHT OF OVER 10,000 POUNDS. SHE HAD NO WHERE TO PULL OVER SAFELY WHEN THE TRUCK SHUTDOWN ON HER. SHE HAD TO GET OUT OF THE TRUCK IN ORDER TO MOVE THE BARRELS BLOCKING THE RIGHT LANE IN ORDER TO TRY AND GET THE TRUCK AND TRAILER OUT OF THE OPEN LANE. SHE HAD TO BLOCK AN EXIT IN ORDER TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE OTHER VEHICLES. THE TRUCK WENT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP IN CUMBERLAND, MD WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT IT WAS THE EXHAUST TEMPERATURE SENSOR. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE ON THIS VEHICLE. AT NO TIME SHOULD A VEHICLE SHUTDOWN ON SOMEONE DRIVING IT. BELIEVE IT A VEHICLE GOING INTO A LIMP MODE BUT AT LEAST YOU CAN STILL DRIVE IT SO YOU CAN GET TO A SAFE PLACE. THERE NEEDS TO BE AN INVESTIGATION INTO WHY THIS OCCURS AND ENFORCE FORD TO ISSUE A RECALL TO FIX THIS PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE IS INJURED OR KILLED. *TR

I HAVE SUBMITTED MY REQUEST FOR A RECALL TO BE ISSUED ON ALL 2008 FORD F350SD FOR THE EXHAUST TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAILURE CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SHUTDOWN. LOOKS AS THOUGH A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR 2012 FORD 6.7L AMBULANCE PACKAGES: F-350 ENGINE RECALL NUMBER: 13V535000 RECALL DATE: 10/30/2013 PROBLEM SUMMARY: FORD MOTOR COMPANY (FORD) IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011-2012 F-350/450/550 AMBULANCE PACKAGE VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FEBRUARY 22, 2010, THROUGH OCTOBER 19, 2012 AND EQUIPPED WITH A 6.7L DIESEL ENGINE. DUE TO AN EXHAUST SENSOR PROBLEM, THE VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE LOSS OF POWER FOLLOWED BY AN ENGINE STALL. CONSEQUENCE: AN UNEXPECTED ENGINE STALL INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH. ADDITIONALLY, IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR WHEN THE AMBULANCE IS TRANSPORTING A PATIENT, THERE IS AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY TO THE PATIENT. ON SEPTEMBER 30, 2014, MY WIFE WAS ON HER WAY TO COLUMBUS, OHIO IN HER 2008 FORD F350 SUPER DUTY TURBO DIESEL TRUCK (VIN# [XXX]) WITH 44,000 MILES. SHE'S PULLING HER 2014 26? LAKOTA TWO HORSE TRAILER WITH LIVING QUARTERS WITH HER SHOW HORSE IN THE BACK. THE UNEXPECTED HAPPEN WHILE SHE WAS ON MD-51N NEAR CUMBERLAND, MARYLAND HEADING ACROSS A BRIDGE WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC AT 1230PM. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WITH THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE ?PULL OVER SAFELY?. TWENTY SECONDS (20 SECONDS) LATER, THE TRUCK COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN. WIFE WAS TRAVELING AT 70 MILES AN HOUR WHEN THE TRUCK SHUT DOWN, WHICH TURNED THE POWER STEERING OFF. THIS IS WHAT I CALL UNSAFE FOR ANYONE, ESPECIALLY WHEN PULLING A 26? HORSE TRAILER WITH AN EXTRA 1000LBS IN THE BACK WITH A HORSE. SHE WAS NOT ABLE TO GET COMPLETELY OFF THE ROAD WHICH ALMOST CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT DUE TO THE VEHICLE SHUTTING DOWN ON HER. AFTER SITTING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WAITING FOR AAA TO COME TOW THE VEHICLE FOR OVER 1 HOURS, THE VEHICLE STARTED BACK UP AND SHE DROVE IT TO FORD CUMBERLAND, 10335 MT SAVAGE ROAD NW, CUMBERLAND, MD WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STILL ON WITH A POLICE ESCORT SINCE THE SHERIFF OF CUMBERLAND SAT WITH MY WIFE ON MD-51N WAITING ON AAA. THIS IS AFTER SHE WAS ALMOST HIT BY A FEDEX EIGHTEEN WHEELER DUE TO NOT BEING ABLE TO GET TO A SAFE LOCATION FOR A TRUCK AND HORSE TRAILER DUE TO THE VEHICLE SHUTTING DOWN ON HER. THE DEALERSHIP FOUND THE PROBLEM: EXHAUST SENSOR. THEY WERE ABLE TO REPAIR IT AND SHE WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE ON WITH HER TRIP. HOW CAN THIS SENSOR GO OUT ON A TRUCK WITH ONLY 44,000 MILES ON IT? HOW CAN THEY DESIGN A TRUCK TO SHUT DOWN AUTOMATICALLY WITHOUT ANY WARNING? THE DEALERSHIP TOLD MY WIFE THEY HAVE SEEN THESE SENSORS GO OUT AT 20,000 MILES BEFORE. NEEDS TO BE ADDRESS AND RECALL ISSUED BEFORE SOMEONE DIES ON THE HIGHWAY DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. HOLD FORD ACCOUNTABLE. WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 40MP WHEN THE ENGINE JUST STOPPED AND LOST POWER. THIS HAPPENED ON 2 MORE OCCASIONS. ONCE WHILE PULLING OUT ONTO A BUSY STREET, AND WAS ALMOST HIT BY ONCOMING TRAFFIC. CANNOT RISK INJURY, SO TOOK IT RIGHT TO A REPUTABLE LOCAL DIESEL MECHANIC. DIESEL MECHANIC STATES THAT ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM MUST BE REPLACED. FAULTY HI PRESSURE FUEL PUMP DISINTEGRATED AND SENT METAL THRU FUEL SYSTEM. THIS WILL COST $8000 TO FIX. WAS TOLD THIS WAS THE FIRST YEAR "BUG" FOR A NEW DESIGN. FORD WILL NOT REPLACE PARTS OR WARRANTY THIS. COMMON ON THIS MODEL, BUT DEFINITELY A SAFETY HAZARD, AS THE TRUCK MAY OR MAY NOT STALL WHEN GIVING GAS. IT IS UNPREDICTABLE. *TR

WHILE IN TOW/HAUL MODE TOWING 40' 5TH WHEEL, ENGINE OVERHEATED QUICKLY WHICH RESULTED IN LOSS OF POWER. NO LEAKS SEEN AND COOLANT WAS SPRAYING OUT OF OVERFLOW CAP ONLY. NO LIGHTS CAME ON IN DASH. SEEMS FAN IS NOT KICKING ON WHEN NEEDED? WHEN FAN DOES KICK ON, ENGINE COOLS IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS ONLY AT LOW SPEEDS UNDER HEAVY TOWING. TRUCK RUNS GREAT OTHERWISE WITH NO OVERHEATING PROBLEMS. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE WITH THIS TRUCK AND I'M SURE IT IS CAUSING DAMAGE. WARRANTY JUST RAN OUT OF COURSE. THERE IS A COOLANT LOSS AS WELL, BUT UNKNOWN WHERE IT IS GOING. ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, WHEN VEHICLE IS STOPPED, WITH BRAKE DEPRESSED, THE ENGINE REVS UP AND VEHICLE WANTS TO ACCELERATE FORWARD AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE ACCELERATION IS TO GET THE VEHICLE TRANSITIONED IN TO PARK AND CUT THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THREE DEALERS, WHOM ARE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE AND CORRECT THE PROBLEM.
