I own a 2020 Ford F-350 Super Duty (VIN: [XXX] , mileage: ~20,000). The vehicle is subject to a recall involving the transmission output planetary four assembly replacement. Ford and the dealer insist that the transmission must be disassembled and rebuilt to complete this recall. I do not agree with this solution because it permanently alters the integrity of the original transmission. Additionally, the dealer (Route 23 Auto Mall, Butler NJ) has repeatedly mishandled repairs, including installing the fuel filter incorrectly multiple times. I have opened several case numbers with Ford Customer Service: Recall Case No: [XXX](02/02/2024) Fuel filter dealer error: [XXX] (01/06/2025), [XXX] (01/15/2025), [XXX] (08/26/2025) Transmission recall follow-up: [XXX] (02/25/2025) Buyback case (denied): [XXX] (03/04/2025) Despite multiple cases, Ford refused to buy back the vehicle because it is registered under a company name. This is unfair and leaves me with a defective and unsafe vehicle. I request NHTSA to investigate this recall and require Ford to provide a new transmission replacement instead of a rebuild, and to review Ford’s handling of dealer errors and warranty obligations. Transmission jerking hard down shift cause stalling Did update less then 100k miles on truck and now back doing it again
The contact owns a 2020 Ford F-350. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 MPH, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted from 10th to 1st gear, causing the vehicle to abruptly decelerate in the middle of the road. Additionally, on several occasions, the transmission unintendedly shifted out of gear. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who serviced the transmission, but the failures persisted. No further information was available. The vehicle was later taken to a different dealer, who diagnosed that the transmission required a complete overhaul. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 72,000.

Our 2020 Ford F-350 experienced a catastrophic mechanical failure while in motion. The driveline disconnected, the rear axle locked up, and the transmission bellhousing was destroyed—leaving the truck completely immobile and blocking traffic. This occurred with no prior warning and posed a significant crash risk. At the time, Ford Safety Recall 22S22 (related to a known defect in the transmission’s output planetary four assembly) was open and had not yet been completed. The symptoms and failure we experienced match the failure scenario described in Ford's own bulletin for 22S22: driveline separation, internal transmission damage, and loss of control or Park function. Ford has denied coverage, stating the failure was due to a "loose pinion flange nut" and unrelated to the recall. However, they have not provided any inspection documentation, photos, or evidence that the recalled components were properly inspected or ruled out as the root cause. We have repeatedly requested this documentation from both Ford and the dealership, but neither has provided it. We are concerned that the failure was caused by the exact defect identified in Recall 22S22, and that Ford is failing to take responsibility or follow full recall procedures—including post-failure inspection and transparency. We are requesting that NHTSA investigate this case as a potential mishandling of a known safety defect and failure to comply with recall responsibilities.
My 2022 F350 transmission went in and out of gear driving down the high way It would slam in gear and cause a u. Safe driving condition . The dealer wants to rebuild it for the second time in two years or 40,000 miles sad the ten speed had issues Ford does not really want to help Thank you [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My 2020 Ford F-350 has had an occasional problem with the transmission since shortly after I purchased it. It started with sticking in gear occasionally to the point where the engine RPM's would stay very high but not shift even when pushing the accelerator even more. It just would not come out of it. The dealer didn't find any issue and the issue subsided a bit, but in the last 6-8 months, it has noticeably shifted hard into drive, but not when shifting into reverse. Putting it in drive even with the brake depressed hard to the floor, it jolts forward and shakes the entire truck. When downshifting, it sometimes does it so hard that it feels like a vehicle hit the rear of the truck. There is nothing smooth about this truck with the behavior this transmission is showing. I changed the fluid and filter 6 weeks ago and it's the same. It also occasionally revs up when accelerating as you turn a corner and it "catches." I am mostly a daily driver that occasionally tows a boat or snowmobile trailer. Non-commercial user.

I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING ISSUES WITH MY TRANSMISSION. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP IN POTEAU, OKLAHOMA. I WAS INFORMED THE VEHICLE WAS HAVING THE SAME ISSUES AS THE TRANSMISSIONS THAT WERE ON A RECALL LIST, YET MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT ONE ON THE LIST. I DID RECEIVE A RECALL NOTICE FROM FORD IN 2022 TIMEFRAME, BUT WAS NOT HAVING ISSUES AT THE TIME I RECEIVE THE NOTICE. ON AUGUST 15, 2024, I CONTACTED FORD HEADQUARTERS AND WAS TOLD... "YOUR VEHICLE DOES INDEED FIT THE CRITERIA OF THE AFFECTED VEHICLES, BUT YOUR VIN NUMBER IS NOT ON THE LIST OF THE AFFECTED VEHICLES. WE CANNOT TELL YOU WHY YOUR VEHICLE IS NOT ON THAT LIST, BUT I WOULD SUGGESTED THAT YOU CONTACT (NHTSA) AND ASK FOR YOUR VIN BE ADDED TO THE LIST. I RECOMMEND YOU DO THAT AS SOON AS WE HANG UP." THE MOMENT I ENDED THE CALL WITH FORD HEADQUARTERS, I CONTACT A REPRESENTATIVE WITH (NHTSA) AS RECOMMENDED. THE REPRESENTATIVE STATED THE FIRST STEP, TO FILE A CLAIM. SO THATS WHERE IM AT NOW. I WOULD LIKE TO ASK THAT MY VIN NUMBER BE ADDED TO THE LIST OF RECALLS ON THE DOCUMENT ATTACHED, SEEING MY TRUCK FITS ALL ASPECTS OF THE CURRENT RECALL. THANK YOU AND HAVE A BLESSED DAY! The transmission 10R140 skip, jumps and hesitation when driving in any gear. The transmission jumps forward when backing up with out of control Function and driver un able to control vehicle. There was a safety recall on this transmission on the 10R140 with the 6.7 diesel truck. My truck is a 6.2 liter gas engine with the same Transmission 10R140 built in the same plant and same time frame as the safety recall 22S22 as stated in this letter attached. My transmission has failed and is a safety problem as addressed in this letter
*Component or system: the transmission (10R140) on my F350 Truck has failed. The transmission has been inspected by a Ford service tech shop at dealership. * The truck would jump gear and jump or jolt when backing up., slight pause in power when driving truck at any speed. * The truck is at a Ford Dealership at this time. The service tech said this transmission needs to be replaced, it is unsafe to drive. The truck was bought brand new and only has 73,000 miles *The truck has been inspected by a Ford service tech for the transmission *The problem was happening on & off at times, but recently a warning lite came on 10/29/2023 which would come on & off at times I see that there was a safety recall 22S22 on this transmission 10R140 for super duty trucks built in 2020. The letter from Ford written by David J Johnson director of service engineering operation, dated September 23, 2022. This letter stated trucks built in the Kentucky Truck assembly plant between October 1, 2019 through September 21, 2020 the 10R140 transmission the pinion thrust washers can disintegrate with a defected part. Per the Vin number my truck was built at the above Kentucky plant on February 20, 2020 with this 10R140 Transmission. My Truck is built with a 6.2 L gas engine with the 10R140 transmission F350 Super Duty. The service tech said this is the same Transmission put in the diesel engine trucks. So if there is a safety recall 22S22 on the 10R140 transmission defect why was my truck not listed on this safety recall notice. My truck has the 10R140 transmission and has the same problems as mentioned in the above letter. Please let me know how to address the above issue. Brand new 2020 F350 started having issues around 62,000 miles....we have reported these issues to Ford in Harriman and Ford in Lenoir (They do not have a transmission specialist available in Lenoir and Ford in Harriman states they don't honor my extended warranty that we purchased through Ford). In January we started having issues when we were traveling on the interstate heading towards Chattanooga. Which is only about 45 minutes to an hour away. The wrench light came on and the truck started to shift hard and at a high RPM , getting stuck in 7th gear not wanting to shift between 3rd and 4th gear. The truck started to go into limp mode and we managed to get it home and bring it to Ford in Harriman (Jerry Duncan Ford). They stated the TCM needed to be reset, and proceeded with that costing $165. Three weeks later, my truck lost all gears including park and makes a really loud grinding/screeching noise when you try to shift to anything but neutral. The truck was presenting the same issues as the first time, we got it towed to Jerry Duncan and informed them of a recall on the 2020 F350 made between the dates of February 2019- August 2020 and April 2019 - July 2020 manufactured at the Kentucky plant during these dates. My truck (same year make and model as recall ) was manufactured from the Kentucky Plant in November of 2019, showing the same issues and symptoms of the recall. Putting my truck dead smack in the recall time frame, again showing the same issues and symptoms stated in the recall. Preliminary DX from Jerry Duncan was that the Transfer case Mechanism has failed, ignoring the recalls on the truck (there is also 1 regarding back up camera and 1 regarding tow capacity that has never been addressed properly) $80k truck has been sitting in the shop for two weeks and won't be looked at for another week and half, and only has 72,000 miles on it, purchased a year ago. There is not urgency in this matter and I feel we are being booted to the back of the line.

I PURCHASED THIS TRUCK ON 09/23/20. AT DELIVERY THE STEERING WHEEL WAS NOT ALIGNED CORRECTLY AND HAD TO BE ADJUSTED. TRUCK HAS HAD A CONSTANT VIBRATION THAT IS FELT THRU THE STEERING AND BODY. THE VIBRATION INCREASES WITH SPEED. AT 1031 MILES A REPAIR ATTEMPT WAS MADE THAT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL, AT 3225 MILES AGAIN A FAILED ATTEMPT WAS MADE AT CORRECTING, AT 3735 ANOTHER FILED ATTEMPT. AT 8156 ANOTHER FAILED ATTEMPT. AND AGAIN AT 8934 ANOTHER MORE EXTENSIVE REPAIR ATTEMPT WAS MADE WITH NO POSITIVE RESULTS. I WILL UPLOAD ALL REPAIR WORK ORDERS. THERE IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM IN THE DRIVETRAIN OF THE VEHICLE THAT FORD AS OF YET HAS BEEN UNABLE TO CORRECT. THE VIBRATION IS CONSTANT AND AT HIGHWAY SPEED HAS MADE PEOPLE CAR SICK. I AM FEARFUL THAT THERE IS A FAILING COMPONENT IN THE TRUCK THAT WHEN IT FINALLY BREAKS WILL CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THEY HAVE USED A VCMM VIBRATION ANALIZER THAT LISTED A HOST OF POTENTIAL PROBLEMS AND IN THEIR WORDS THE RESULTS WERE MISLEADING. THIS IS A HEAVY DUTY TRUCK THAT I FEAR TOWING MY TRAILERS WITH BECAUSE THEY CAN'T TELL ME WHY IT HAS THE VIBRATION. I ALMOST BELIEVE THAT THEY KNOW THE PROBLEM AND WON'T DISCLOSE IT TO ME. THE MOST CONCERNING STATEMENT MADE IN THE REPAIR ATTEMPT IS THAT THEY COMPARED MY TRUCK TO AN INSTOCK UNIT AND IT DRIVE COMPARABLE.

ON 3 OCCASIONS SINCE I BOUGHT THE PU NEW ON JULY 24TH, 2020 I EXPERIENCED WHAT THE FORD DEALER NOW CALLS DEATH WOBBLE. THE FIRST TIME HAPPENED ON SEPT 2ND WHILE DRIVING DOWN HILL PULLING MY TRAILER AT ABOUT 50MPH. WHEN I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE THE STEERING WHEEL AND BRAKE PEDAL STARTED TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY. I HAD LITTLE CONTROL UNTIL MY SPEED DROPPED. I TOOK THE PU TO THE DEALER SEPT 16TH. THEY SAID THEY COULD FIND NO PROBLEM AND STATED IF THEIR AGENT COULD NOT EXPERIENCE THE PROBLEM WHILE DRIVING THE PU THEY COULD NOT FIX IT. ON THE SECOND TIME I WAS DRIVING THE PU EMPTY AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND AGAIN WHILE BRAKING THE STEERING AND BRAKES SHOOK VIOLENTLY. UP TO THIS POINT I WAS THINKING THE BRAKES WERE THE PROBLEM. I STARTED TRACKING THE BRAKE TEMPERATURE WHICH SHOWED A LARGE VARIETY OF TEMPS FOR SIMILAR DRIVING CONDITIONS. I PROVIDED THE NUMBERS TO THE DEALER. I WAS TOLD A FEW DAYS LATER ON OCT 29TH THAT THE TEMPS WERE NORMAL AND MY DRIVING STYLE NEEDED TO BE ADJUSTED FOR A VEHICLE OF THIS TYPE. ON THE THIRD TIME NOV 15TH I WAS AGAIN PULLING THE TRAILER BUT THIS TIME AT 40MPH IN WET AND SNOWY CONDITIONS WHEN I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE I EXPERIENCED THE SHAKING TO THE POINT OF LOSING CONTROL. WHEN I TOOK THE PU TO THE DEALER WITH JUST 8000 MILES ON THE TRUCK THEY AGAIN SAID THEY COULD DO NOTHING WITHOUT THEIR AGENT SEEING THE PROBLEM THEMSELVES. BUT THIS TIME ON THE PAPERWORK THEY DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM AS 'DEATH WOBBLE'. I CHECKED THE NHTSA SITE FINDING SEVERAL COMPLAINTS SIMILAR TO MINE. THE INTERNET IS ALSO LOADED WITH COMPLAINTS AND POSSIBLE FIXES SINCE FORD WON'T OR CAN'T FIX THE PROBLEM. FORD CLEARLY KNOWS THIS PROBLEM EXISTS BECAUSE THEY HAVE PUT A NAME TO THE PROBLEM BUT THEY ARE DOING NOTHING ON MY PU (AND MANY OTHERS) TO FIX THE PROBLEM.

THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE RECALL IS 20S33. TORGUE CONVERTER DAMPER FRACTURE. THE TRUCK WAS SOLD WITH TECHNICAL PROBLEMS OF THE BACKUP CAMERA, THAT TOTALLY DOESN’T WORK TILL NOW. THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS STARTS ON 07 TH OF OCTOBER 2020, WHEN I NOTICED A HUGE NOISE IN THE CAR ACCORDING TO THE TRANSMISSION SYSTEM. ON THE 08 TH OF OCTOBER 2020, I HAVE BEEN TO DEALERSHIP LOCATED AT 8445 45 TH ST LYONS, IL, 60534, AND I LEFT THE CAR AT THEIR SERVICE CENTER TO DIAGNOSE THE TECHNICAL PROBLEM AND FOR SURE TO SOLVE IT. DURING ONE WEEK THEY CAN’T DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. AFTER THAT, THEY CALLED ME, AND SAID THAT THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED BUT UNFORTUNATELY THEY DIDN’T HAVE THE NECESSARY SPARE PARTS, BECAUSE THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY DOESN’T PRODUCE MORE THIS KIND OF SPARE PARTS. BUT HOW IT’S POSSIBLE TO SELL THE CARS WITHOUT NECESSARIES SPARE PARTS, WHAT HAVE TO DO THE CONSUMER IF THE CAR IS A NEW ONE AND IT BRAKES? THEY DIDN’T REPAIR THE TRUCK IN 30 DAYS; I CALLED THE FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE, BUT THE MS AT THE PHONE TOLD ME THAT THEY CAN’T SOLVE SUCH KIND OF PROBLEMS, AND I HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER DEALERSHIP WHO CAN REPAIRS THE TRUCK. ACCORDING TO THE LAW THEY HAVE TO REPAIR THE CAR IN 30 DAYS, AND THEY DIDN’T, THE CAR IT’S WORSE THEN IT WAS BEFORE. AND NOW I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO, WHY THE CAR NEW WARRANTY DOESN’T WORK, THE ADDITIONAL PREMIUM CARE WARRANTY DOESN’T WORK. AND I HAVE TO SAY THAT THE TRUCK IS A NEW ONE, WITH 58 000 MILES. I PAID A LOT OF MONEY FOR THIS CAR, AND NOW I’M IN THE SITUATION THAT I HAVE TO PAY THE CREDIT RATE AND I HAVE NO POSSIBILITY TO DO IT, BECAUSE THE TRUCK IS BROKEN AND I CAN’T WORK. NOW I DROVE THE TRUCK TO ANOTHER SERVICE (NOT FORD) WHERE I WAS TOLD THE COST OF THE REPAIR WOULD COST $7.000. THEY SAID THAT I CANNOT DRIVE THE TRUCK NOW BECAUSE IT IS DANGEROUS.

WHILE NEGOTIATING STEEP GRADES (OVER 8 DEGREES) AT MODERATE SPEEDS (~30MPH) WITH THE ENGINE BRAKE IN AUTOMATIC A 3RD GEAR TO 2ND GEAR OR 2ND GEAR TO FIRST GEAR CHANGE IS PROCEEDED BY A SIGNIFICANT ACCELERATION BY AS MUCH AS 5MPH OR MORE THIS CAN BE SIMULATED ON LESS STEEP INCLINES BY ENGAGING THE ENGINE BRAKE AND MANUALLY SHIFTING FROM 3RD TO 2ND.. THERE WILL BE AN INCREASE IN SPEED THAT CAN BE QUITE SIGNIFICANT THERE IS A MINOR REDUCTION IN BRAKING WHEN THE TRUCK PERFORMS A 4TH TO 3RD DOWNSHIFT BUT IT DOESN'T CAUSE ACCELERATION TO THE DEGREE THAT THE 3RD AND 2ND SHIFTS DO. THE CIRCUMSTANCES UNDER WHICH AN ENGINE BRAKE WOULD BE USED ARE EXACTLY THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES WHERE AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OF ANY KIND IS MOST DANGEROUS, SUCH AS MOUNTAIN ROADS AND SWITCHBACKS WHILE TOWING HEAVY LOADS THE DEALER IS AWARE OF HOW TO REPRODUCE THIS EVENT AND HAS SEEN IT FIRST HAND WHILE ON A TEST DRIVE.

SHIFTING FROM 2 TO 3RD GEAR WHILE LIGHTLY ACCELERATING, IT BANGS SO HARD I THINK TRANSMISSION FELL OUT. IF IT UNDER AGGRESSIVE ACCELERATION, IT'S SMOOTH
