The contact owns a 2005 Ford Five Hundred. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle made an abnormal knocking sound. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics, where the flywheel was replaced twice with used parts because the part had been discontinued. The contact stated that while her son was driving approximately 20 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The check transmission warning light, the check engine warning light, and other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The driver was able to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle was able to restart but was undrivable. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.

While waiting at the light in traffic, my car all of a sudden Accelerated, and decelerates, I have to push hard on the breaks in order for it to not slam into the cars infront of me.. this is really dangerous, from what I have been reading this is a wide spread issue that ford has ignored for years..

UPON INITIAL INSPECTION I FOUNT THE CAR WAS THROWING THE CODE P0351 I CLEARED ALL FAULTS AND PROBLEM WENT AWAY WEKS WENT BY AND PROBLEM STARTED AGAIN BUT MORE SEVER DURING NORMAL OPERATION THE CAR STARTED SHAKING AND SHIFTING ERRATIC I THEN CAME UPON SOME K FORMATION AS TO A RECALL FORD PUT IN PLACE STATING IMPROPER CALIBRATION OF PCM AND TCM CAUSE UNNECESSARY INTERACTION I THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND MALFUNCTION OF THE VEHICLE

TRANSMISSION HAS VERY HARD AND DELAYED UPSHIFT AND DOWNSHIFT MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO CONTROL SPEED WHEN ACCELERATING AND DECELERATING. RPM GETS STUCK AROUND 3000 AT LOWER SPEEDS AND UPON ENGAGING INTO GEAR HAS MADE MY TIRES SQUAWK WITH A SUDDEN LUNGE IN SPEED AND SAME PROBLEM WHEN TRYING TO STOP, THE CAR LUNGES FORWARD. IT ACTS AS THOUGH IT IS IN NEUTRAL BUT THEN WHEN IT ENGAGES INTO GEAR SUDDEN CHANGES IN SPEED OCCUR CAUSING RAPID ACCELERATION OR DECELERATION. THE PROBLEM GETS WORSE AFTER THE CAR IS UP TO NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE. IT DOESN'T OCCUR AS OFTEN AT COLDER OPERATING TEMPERATURE. THIS PROBLEM MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO GET BACK UP TO SAFE HIGHWAY SPEEDS AFTER HAVING TO STOP FOR TRAFFIC OR RED LIGHTS AS WELL AS HARD TO GET UP TO SPEED TO SAFELY MERGE INTO TRAFFIC FROM AN ON RAMP. AS FAR AS "WHEN" THIS HAPPENED IT IS EVERY DAY AS I DRIVE DAILY.

(ETB) ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY ON MY CAR CAUSES AN ACCELERATION THAT MAKES THE CAR JERK FORWARD. I'VE ALMOST HIT A WALL, AND GOD FORBID THIS HAPPENS ON THE HIGHWAY I COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. ITS UNSAFE AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. POOR DESIGN I GUESS BUT IT'S NOT WORTH MY LIFE. THIS HAPPENED WHILE IDLING IN DRIVE THRU WHEN I TRIED TO GO FORWARD IT IDLED REALLY HIGH THEN DROPPED DOWN. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND LET IT SIT FOR ABOUT 2 TO 3 MINUTES. I STARTED THE CAR UP AND WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT HOME. I AM THANKFUL THAT THIS HAPPEN ON CITY STREET AND NOT ON THE HIGHWAY. I PLAN ON CONTACTING MY FORD DEALER TOMORROW.

BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED IN MAY 2010. REALIZED EARLY-ON THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS NOT SMOOTH, BUT WILLING TO SETTLE FOR LESS THAN PERFECTION SINCE IT WAS A 2005 VEHICLE. IN LATE 2012 OR EARLY 2013, I RECEIVED 'RECALL' NOTICE THAT PCM (I.E. - POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) COULD NEED TO BE REPROGRAMMED DUE TO STALLING, HERKY-JERKY TRANSMISSION, ETC. TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP, THEY RAN DIAGNOSTICS, CHARGED ME $100, AND TOLD ME THAT MY CAR WASN'T EFFECTED BECAUSE NO ERROR CODES WERE NOTED AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WASN'T ON. I WAS NOT HAPPY, AND REFUSED TO TAKE MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. PROBLEM PERSISTED, UNTIL CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON IN OCTOBER 2017 AT ROUGHLY 125,000 MILES. TOOK TO LOCAL MECHANIC, WAS CHARGED $150 FOR SENSOR REPLACEMENT. LIGHT CAME BACK ON A DAY LATER. TOOK BACK, REPLACED SENSOR FOR FREE (NICE!), BUT LIGHT BACK ON A DAY LATER. TOOK TO A DIFFERENT MECHANIC, WAS CHARGED $250, REPLACED MULTIPLE SENSORS, LIGHT BACK ON THE NEXT DAY. TOOK BACK TO 2ND MECHANIC, WHEN THEY SHARED WITH ME THAT IT WAS LIKELY THE PCM AND THE DEALERSHIP WOULD NEED TO FIX. CALLED DEALERSHIP 3 DAYS IN A ROW, ON HOLD FOR NEARLY AN HOUR THE 3RD TIME, WAS NEVER CONNECTED TO A SERVICE WRITER OR TECH, LEFT 3 VOICE MAILS FOR SERVICE MANAGER AND WAS NEVER CALLED BACK. RESEARCHED ISSUE AND FOUND NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE11018, WHERE FORD INITIATED A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM 12N03 TO EXTEND COVERAGE TERMS OF REPAIR OF ENGINE IDLE RPM SURGE CAUSED BY PCM NEEDING REPROGRAMMING WITH SOFTWARE CONTAINING UPDATED IDLE SPEED CONTROL. PER NHTSA, SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE CONDITION MAY INCLUDE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, DIAGNOSTIC CODES (DTCS) P0505, P0506, OR P061B. FORD ISSUED BULLETIN TSB 11-10-21 THAT INCLUDED UPDATED POWERTRAIN CONTROL CALIBRATION.

THE CAR GOES INTO A LOSS OF POWER, LIKE LOW GEAR. IT MOVED BUT REVS UP AND WON'T SHIFTS UP. I KNOW ITS A CONSTANT VELOCITY TRANS SO IT IS AT IT'S LOWER RATIO. AFTER HOURS OF DIAGNOSTIC IT COMES DOWN TO THE TRANS CONTROL MODULE, AND STILL NOT SURE. THE OBD CODES SAY LOSS OF COMMUNICATION, A U CODE. EVERY INCH OF HARNESS HAS BEEN CHECKED THE WHOLE INTERIOR HAS BEEN REMOVED, DASH DISASSEMBLED. I'M INTO IT OVER $2,000. I LOVE THE CAR, IT RIDES GREAT. ITS HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED. FORD I NEED HELP. LEAVING A GROCER AT 13:15 ON 9/7/2015 STARTED TO BACK OUT OF PARKING SPOT WHEN AUTO SUDDENLY ACCELERATED BACKWARD, ACROSS THE AISLE AND SLAMMED INTO PARKED VEHICLE WITH IMPACT SENDING THAT AUTO INTO A 3RD. DAMAGES TO BOTH VEHICLES. WHEN I WENT TO PULL INTO MY ORIGINAL SLOT TO DEAL WITH SITUATION, AS SOON AS I REMOVED FOOT FROM BRAKE, AUTO LUNGED FORWARD AT HIGH RATE OF SPEED, JUMPED A 6" LANDSCAPE CURB AND PLOWED INTO THE FRONT END OF A CADILLAC SRX CAUSING MAJOR DAMAGE TO THAT VEHICLE, STILL UNK TOTAL DAMAGE TO MINE. IT WAS A VERY HOT DAY AND THE AC WAS RUNNING. NO OTHER VEHICLES WERE OCCUPIED OTHER THAN MINE, AND I WAS SOLE OCCUPANT. MY AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY AND PASSENGER'S WAS NOT TURNED ON. I DID RECEIVE A SIGNIFICANT BRUISE ON MY STERNUM FROM THE SHOULDER COMPONENT OF MY SEAT BELT. MY FOOT WAS NOT ON THE ACCELERATOR FOR EITHER "LUNGE". CRASHES WERE WITNESSED AND PEORIA AZ POLICE DID RESPOND WITH 2 UNITS. OFFICERS DID TAKE INFORMATION, BUT WHEN I INQUIRED ABOUT INCIDENT # FOR MY RECORDS OFFICER RESPONDED THAT THERE WOULD BE NO REPORT AND NO CITATIONS AS IT OCCURRED ON PRIVATE PROPERTY. MY INSURANCE CARRIER WAS CONTACTED FROM SITE, BUT BEING A HOLIDAY, I WAS NOT ABLE TO SPEAK WITH ADJUSTER AT THAT TIME. KNOWING THAT IT WAS NOT MY ACTIONS THAT CAUSED THIS INCIDENT, I CHECKED THE NEXT DAY AND DISCOVERED THAT THIS IDENTICAL SITUATION HAD BEEN UNDER INVESTIGATION WITH NHTSA AT THE TIME I PURCHASED THE CAR ON OR ABOUT 11/16/12 AT WHICH A SERVICE PROGRAM TO RETIFY WAS IN EFFECT. WITH MY INCIDENT THOUGH, MAJOR DAMAGE OCCURRED. NEITHER AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE, NOR THROUGHOUT THE INVESTIGATION & TENURE OF MY OWNERSHIP (CURRENT) WAS I NOTIFIED OF THE KNOWN SAFETY PROBLEM NOR IT'S PROGRAM TO MITIGATE. AFTER THIS EPISODE WHEN I FINALLY MADE IT HOME I DECIDED TO PARK MY CAR FOR SEVERAL WEEKS UNTIL I CALLED FORD TO SEE IF THERE WAS A WARRANTY AND THEY TOLD ME TO BRING MY CAR TO BE REPAIRED ONLY TO BE TOLD IT WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY AND IT WOULD COST ME $2000 TO GET MY CAR REPAIRED BECAUSE THERE WAS A ALSO A LEAK WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO BE UNDER RECALL. I'VE READ A LOT OF THINGS GOING ON WITH THIS CAR IN PARTICULAR THE 2005 FORD FIVE HUNDRED. I TOOK IT TO OUR FORD DEALER AND HE CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY...THEN REPLACE IT A WEEK LATER WHEN THAT DIDN'T FIX IT. A ABOUT 2 WEEKS LATER WE WERE GETTING ANOTHER ERROR ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION FAILING. IT STARTED MAKING A TERRIBLE NOISE. I STILL OWE 3200 ON THIS CAR,,.AND A NEW TRANSMISSION IS OVER 7K. SERIOUSLY?? I HAVE READ SO MANY POSTS ABOUT THE CVT TRANSMISSION ON THE FIVE HUNDRED AND OTHER CARS FAILING. FORD SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES FOR PASSING OFF SOMETHING LIKE THIS. AFTER CARS SITS FOR A PERIOD OF TIME WRENCH DISPLAY GOES OFF AND CAR OPERATES NORMALLY. OWNERS MANUAL INDICATES THAT THIS MAY BE A THROTTLE ASSEMBLY PROBLEM. PRIOR RECALL NOTICE THAT HAS EXPIRED. ON MULTIPLE WEB BOARDS PROBLEM IS MENTION WITH GREAT FREQUENCY FOR THE FORD 500. THIS HAPPENED TO MY WIFE ON A SIDE STREET AT 15-20 MPH. SINCE THAT TIME I'D DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY ON A SUGGESTION OF A MECHANIC FRIEND AND ALL THE ISSUES DISAPPEARED FOR A FEW WEEKS. YESTERDAY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK, AND THE CAR WAS RUNNING POORLY (CREEPING WHEN FIRST OFF BRAKES, NOT UP SHIFTING), WHEN THE DASH WAS OPERABLE IT SHOWED ALTERNATING CHECK ENGINE/CHECK TRANSMISSION WARNINGS, AND VEHICLE WAS SURGING/LAGGING NOTICEABLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. I AGAIN DID THE BATTERY DISCONNECT LAST NIGHT, AND THE CAR IS OPERATING NORMAL TODAY, BUT I'M SURE IT WILL RECUR SHORTLY. I AM HESITANT TO TAKE IT TO A DEALER AS THIS SOUNDS LIKE A SIGNIFICANT ELECTRONICS ISSUE, AND I HAVE ALREADY READ UP ON THE FORD TSB 06-17-9 THAT IS DOCUMENTED ONLINE, NOT ALL OF WHICH ALIGNS WITH MY ISSUES. ON THE INTERSTATE HEADED TOWARDS DENVER, AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR, WHEN TO ACCELERATE FROM ABOUT 70MPH TO ASCEND UP THE HILLS, THE ENGINE RPMS ACCELERATE, HOWEVER, IT FEELS THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS DISENGAGED (SLIPPING) WITH NO POWER TO THE DRIVETRAIN RESULTING IN A DRASTIC LOSS OF SPEED. THIS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES IN EFFORTS TO REGAIN CONTROL AND MAINTAIN SPEED. THIS WAS EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS AS TRAFFIC WAS SOMEWHAT CONGESTED, AND OTHER DRIVERS ARE EXPECTING ME TO ACCELERATE, HOWEVER, VEHICLE WAS IN A DECELERATING MODE. THIS WAS ONLY WITH LIGHT PRESSURE TO THE ACCELERATOR. IT SOUNDED AS IF THE GEARS HAD STRIPPED IN THE TRANSMISSION. WE TURNED AROUND AND HEADED HOME, AUTO WOULD NOT ALLOW SPEEDS OVER 60MPH. IN AUGUST 2010, I HAD THE CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION REPLACED AT ~98,000 MILES. LUCKILY, IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY. NOW IN OCTOBER 2012, THE SECOND TRANSMISSION AS THE SERVICE MEMBER SAID AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP "THE TRANSMISSION EXPLODED, WE'RE NOT EVEN SURE HOW YOU WERE ABLE TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE. THIS WAS AT ~146,000 MILES, BUT THERE IS ONLY ~48,000 MILES ON THE TRANSMISSION ITSELF. TWO TRANSMISSIONS HAVE FAILED IN THIS VEHICLE. 2005 FORD FIVE HUNDRED. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO HARD SHIFTING AND TWO INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS ILLUMINATING. *TGW THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THE RPM'S WOULD RACE AT TIMES. THE CONSUMER WENT TO HER LOCAL DEALER AND A DIAGNOSTIC'S TEST REVEALED A PROBLEM WITH THE PCV VALVE. THE PCV WAS REPLACED AT A COST OF $ 112.95. HOWEVER, IT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE CONSUMER WENT BACK TO THE DEALER FOR A TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSTIC TEST, BUT THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO GIVE A DEFINITIVE ANSWER AS TOW HAT THE PROBLEM WAS. FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS THEN CONTACTED AND THEY INFORMED THE DEALER TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AT A COST OF $5000. THERE WAS ALSO ANOTHER INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WHERE THE VEHICLE WOULD REV WHILE STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN, OR RED LIGHT ETC. AFTER GETTING OTHER OPINIONS, THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED, THE PROBLEM WAS NOT WITH THE TRANSMISSION. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE, THE CONSUMER DISCOVERED IT WAS A VERY COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH HER PARTICULAR MAKE, WHICH SEEMED TO BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT.

DRIVING FROM SJ TO LA, CALIF. 200 MILES INTO MY JOURNEY WITH WIFE AND 3 KIDS, PULLED OFF HIGHWAY FOR GAS. SLOWED DOWN AND NOTICED THE WRENCH AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS ON AND CAR WOULD ONLY GO 10 TO 15 MILES PER HOUR AND REVVED AT MORE THAN 3000 RPMS. THE CAR CLUNKED HARD WHEN PUT INTO DRIVE OR REVERSE. TURNED OFF THE ENGINE, SEVERAL TIMES AND RESTARTED. SOMETIMES FIXED PROBLEM, OTHER TIMES DID NOT. I HAD CAR TOWED TO HANFORD, CALIFORNIA, AND THEN AGAIN TO LOS ANGELES-ANOTHER 198 MILES TO FORD DEALERSHIP. I HAD TO RENT A CAR AND DRIVE THE REST OF THE WAY TO LA AND DRIVE BACK - 198 MILES-TO HANFORD-TO RETURN THE RENTAL CAR. I TESTED THE CAR A FEW TIMES IN HANFORD AND WHEN IT WAS AT THE FORD DEALER. FROM A COLD START, THE CAR WORKED FINE. DROVE AND SHIFTED WELL WITH NO PROBLEMS. BUT ONCE THE CAR WARMED UP, IT WENT BACK INTO LIMP-MODE, CLUNKED HARD WHEN YOU SHIFTED INTO DRIVE OR REVERSE, AND WOULD GO ONLY 10-15 MPH AT 3000 OR MORE RPMS. THE DEALER TEST DROVE IT AND HAD THE SAME RESULT. THE DEALER GOT CODES P0701, P0871, AND P0961 AND SAID THAT MEANT THE TRANSMISSION HAD INTERNAL PROBLEMS. THEY SAID THEY CALLED FORD ENGINEERS WHO TOLD THEM THE LIKELY PROBLEM WAS WHEN THE TRANSMISSION FLUID WARMS UP, IT IS NOT PROPERLY CIRCULATING DUE TO LEAKS IN WHAT THEY CALLED TWO VARIATORS INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION. THEY QUOTED THE COST TO REPLACE THE VARIATORS AS $3600 FOR PARTS AND LABOR OF $1200 FOR A TOTAL OF $4800 AND THAT IS MORE THAN THE COST TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION FOR WHICH THEY QUOTED $4500. SO THEY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION. AFTER STARTING, THEY FOUND A BROKEN TRANSMISSION MOUNT SO THEY REPLACED THAT FOR ANOTHER $250 (PART ONLY - NO LABOR CHARGE). I TEST DROVE THE NEW TRANSMISSION YESTERDAY. THE CAR NO LONGER GOES INTO LIMP MODE AND DRIVES NICELY EXCEPT AFTER IT WARMS UP IT CLUNKS HARD INTO DRIVE AND REVERSE AND WINES IN REVERSE GEAR. THEY RAN SOME DIAGNOSTICS AND ULTIMATELY SAID THEY REPAIRED A VACUUM HOSE AT MY AIRBOX. OK, SURE, WHATEVER. NEXT TWO DAYS, NO PROBLEM. THE THIRD DAY, HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME, I WAS GOING INTO AN UNDERGROUND PARKING SPOT AND IT STARTED REVVING AND I ENDED UP (VERY LIGHTLY) HITTING THE WALL AS IT LURCHED FORWARD. WHEN I WENT TO LEAVE THE SPOT - IN REVERSE - HAPPENED AGAIN - ALMOST HIT THE PARKED CAR BEHIND, AS IT LURCHED. SO TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THIS MORNING - AND THE SERVICE ADVISOR MENTIONED HE SUSPECTS THE THROTTLEBODY AS HE HAS HAD SOME OTHER 500'S IN FOR THE SAME THING. NO IDEA WHY, BUT THE COMPUTER DIDN'T HAVE A CODE FOR THE THROTTLEBODY PROBLEM LAST TIME - BUT IT DID THIS TIME, SO AS I WRITE THIS, THEY ARE PUTTING THE NEW ONE ON AND I'LL BE THERE IN AN HOUR TO PICK IT UP. *TR

THE CAR ENTERED ENGINE "FAILSAFE MODE" AND SHUT DOWN WHILE TRYING TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC ON A BUSY RUSH-HOUR HIGHWAY. AFTER PULLING OVER AND RESTARTING THE ENGINE, OPERATION WAS NORMAL. THIS WAS THE 3RD TIME IN A 2.5 WEEK PERIOD THIS OCCURRED. THE CAR EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUES IN JULY 2010 FREQUENTLY (IT HAD EXISTED FOR 2-3 YEAR ON AND OFF BEFORE THEN). FORD APPLIED THE SERVICE ALERT FIX BY REPLACING THE THROTTLE BODY AND REFRESHING THE PCM. THIS FIX HAS NOT WORKED. THE CAR WILL SPORADICALLY ENTER FAILSAFE MODE ON WARM DAYS WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE/SHIFT GEARS. THE ORIGINAL FIX IN JULY 2010 WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. IN OCTOBER 2010 THERE WAS A TRANSMISSION CONTROL FAILURE AND THE COMPUTER HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED AND THE FIX COST $2000. OPERATION WAS NORMAL DURING THE WINTER MONTHS, HOWEVER, WHEN THE WARM WEATHER RETURNED SO DID THE PROBLEM. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC BELIEVES THE FAILSAFE MODE ISSUE WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE AND FORD SHOULD NOT HAVE CHARGED $2000 FOR A NEW COMPUTER. THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED AND CONTINUES TO OCCUR. THE DEALERSHIP'S SUGGESTION IS TO PULL OVER AND RESTART THE CAR TO CLEAR THE COMPUTER. THE CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, ESPECIALLY ON MULTIPLE LANE HIGHWAYS. ONCE THE FAILSAFE MODE ENGAGES, THERE IS LITTLE POWER TO GET THE CAR OFF THE ROAD. IF YOU ARE ON AN INCLINE IT WILL STOP ALTOGETHER. I PURCHASED A USED 2005 FORD 500 LTD AWD IN MAY 2008. I WAS TOLD IT WAS A LEASE TURN IN. THE MILEAGE WAS VERY LOW, UNDER 30,000 MILES. THE FACTORY WARRANTY EXPIRED IN JULY 2008. IN OCTOBER 2008, MY DASH BEGAN MALFUNCTIONING. THE GAUGES WOULD GO COMPLETELY DEAD. I COULD NOT TELL HOW FAST I WAS GOING, HOW MUCH GAS I HAD LEFT OR THE TEMPERATURE OF THE ENGINE. NOTHING ON MY DASH WOULD WORK. IT VARIED FROM LASTING SECONDS TO APPX A HALF AN HOUR. I DROVE HOME ONE NIGHT (IT TOOK ME APPX 25 MINUTES) NOT KNOWING HOW FAST I WAS GOING OR HOW MUCH GAS I HAD LEFT. ALSO, THE REVERSE LIGHTS WERE ON WHEN MY CAR WAS IN BOTH DRIVE AND PARK. I STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT (MY CAR WAS IN DRIVE) AND THE REVERSE SENSOR ALARM WENT OFF WHEN A CAR PULLED UP BEHIND ME. THE FORD DEALERSHIP DROVE IT AND RAN DIAGNOSTICS ON IT FOR WEEKS AT A TIME AND FOUND NOTHING TO TELL THEM ANYTHING. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING EVERY WEEK OR SO FOR NEARLY A YEAR, AND NO ONE CAN TELL US WHAT'S WRONG. THERE ARE TIMES WHEN IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY, AND THERE ARE TIMES WHEN IT DOESN'T HAPPEN FOR A MONTH. IN 2009 I TOOK MY FORD 500 TO SUTTON FORD IN THE AUTO MALL IN MATTESON, IL BECAUSE I WAS HAVING AN ACCELERATION ISSUE. THE AC LIGHT AND BOARD LIGHT WAS ON. WHEN PLACING THE VEHICLE INTO REVERSE, SHE HEARD A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY DETERMINED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS FAILING. THE REPAIR COULD COST UP TO $5,100. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT NO COMPENSATION WOULD BE PROVIDED BECAUSE HER VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 44,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 48,000.

2005 FORD 500 - LIMITED RECEIVED A AWD MALFUNCTION WITH IN THE DASHBOARD WARNING SYSTEM. THE MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN OFF AND ON FOR THE LAST TWO WEEKS. NO APPARENT DRIVABILTY WHEN THE MALFUNCTION COMES ON. WOULD RESET IT SELF AFTER THE IGNITION IS TURNED OFF AND THE WARNING WOULD COME ON BACK ON AFTER APPROXIMATELY 25 MINS OF DRIVING. BROUGHT THE CAR TO AUTO MECHANIC AND HAD THE COMPUTER CONNECTED AND GOT A P1889 CODE, WHICH IS TO REPLACE THE OIL PUMP PRESSURE SENSOR. HI I'M FROM MEXICO AND I GOT A PROBLEM WITH MY FORD FIVE HUNDRED 2005 TRANSMISSION WHICH I HAVE READ A LOT OF CONSUMERS ALSO GOT, IN FACT I WAS ON MY WAY TO THE JOB (IN THE CHAOTIC CITY OF MEXICO) WHEN SUDDENLY IT BEGAN TO JERK AND THEN THE CAR GOT NO TRACTION, I CANT ACCELERATE NEITHER SUSTAIN VELOCITY, FORTUNATELY THE CAR THAT WAS BEHIND ME REALIZE OF MY PROBLEM AND AWARE THE TRAFFIC TO DE-ACCELERATE, AFTER THAT I STOP THE CAR AND SEE THAT IT WAS SPILLING OIL FROM THE TRANSMISSION. I TURN IT OFF AND RESTART THE ENGINE BUT THE CAR STILL DOES NOT MOVE BY ITSELF SO I WAIT FOR THE WRECKING CRANE TO TAKE THE CAR WITH THE DEALER. WHAT IMPRESSED ME IS THAT THE CAR ONLY GOT 25,000 MILES AND IT WAS SPILLING OIL. FOR THE PAST MONTH OR SO MY FORD FIVE HUNDRED (2005 @ 64,000 TEXAS HWY MILES) HAS BEEN SHIFTING HARD AND CHANGING GEARS ERRATICALLY, WHILE MAKING CLUNKING NOISES. WE TOOK IT TO OUR REPAIR SHOP AND THEY WERE MYSTIFIED SO THEY SENT IT TO THEIR TRANSMISSION SPECIALTY SHOP. IT TURNS OUT THAT THEY HAVE ANOTHER FIVE HUNDRED IN THE SHOP GETTING ITS TRANSMISSION REPLACED BECAUSE OF THE SAME PROBLEMS. WE JUST HAD THE TRANSMISSION FLUSHED AND OIL CHANGED BUT THAT DID NOT HELP. THE TRANSMISSION SHOP CONTACTED THE FORD DEALER SERVICE CENTER AND THEY GAVE THEM THE CODES TO 'FLASH' THE NEWEST CODES INTO THE TRANSMISSION & THROTTLE COMPUTERS. NO CHANGE. THEY TESTED NEW TRANSMISSION MODULES WITH NO CHANGE. SO NOW THEY SAY THEY HAVE TO CHANGE OUT THE TRANSMISSION @ $4,300. THIS IS NOT GOOD! THE TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST SAYS THIS IS THE 4TH FIVE HUNDRED HE HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH AND THAT THEY CANNOT GET PARTS TO REPAIR THE TRANSMISSION SO THEY HAVE NO OTHER OPTION BUT TO REPLACE IT. I HAVE A FORD FIVE HUNDRED LIMITED. THE CAR HAS STOP RUNNING WHILE THE CAR IS IN GEAR AND MOVING. IT ALSO STOPPED WHEN I STARTED TO DRIVE FROM A STOP LIGHT. WHILE IT WAS BEING FIXED AT THE CAR DEALERSHIP IT STOP (DIED) ON THEM SEVERAL TIMES. THE FORD DEALER COMPANY THOUGHT IT WAS THE POWER STEERING PUMP BECAUSE THE POWER STEERING PUMP WAS MAKING A KNOCKING SOUND. THEY ALSO NOTICED THAT IF THEY WAS TO TURN THE WHEEL IT WOULD USUALLY DIE ON THEM. THE DEALERSHIP HAS REPLACED THE BATTERY, POWERSTEERING PUMP, BELT AND THE THROTTLE AND THE CAR STILL DIES. MY UNDERSTANDING FROM THEM IS THAT THEY HAVE NEVER COME ACROSS THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. A DIAGNOSTIC WAS PERFORMED AND THE PCM AND TCM WERE REPROGRAMMED. IN APRIL OF 2008, THE VEHICLE HESITATED AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A SERVICE CENTER FOR ANOTHER DIAGNOSTIC AND WAS CHARGED OVER $500. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 17,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 4,000. CAR RANDOMLY STALLS. ON OCCASIONS WHEN THE ACCELERATOR IS DEPRESSED THE CAR DOES NOT MOVE IT STUTTERS, I EVEN TRIED TO DEPRESS THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR AND STILL NOTHING. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER FOR SERVICE. THE ONLY THING THAT I WAS TOLD "THE COMPUTER CHIP IN THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED UPDATED." OK THIS HASN'T CORRECTED MY PROBLEM. PURCHASED FORD FIVE HUNDRED IN FEBRUARY 2006, AN SEL AUTOMATIC. AROUND 15,000 MILES BEGAN NOTICING TRANSMISSION ISSUES, MOSTLY HESITATION WHEN SHIFTING INTO GEAR. FIRST MAJOR INCIDENT OCCURRED OCT. 22, 2006 WHILE TRAVELING AT 65 MILES PER HOUR ON THE FREEWAY, ENGINE REVVED WHILE PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL BUT VEHICLE SLOWED AS IF IT WAS IN NEUTRAL. THEN IT PUNCHED VIOLENTLY AND RESUMED DRIVING NORMALLY. WE PULLED OVER THINKING SOMETHING MAJOR WAS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. WE BEGAN OUR JOURNEY AGAIN AND HAD SEVERAL INCIDENTS OF MINOR PUNCHING OF THE TRANSMISSION, LIKE IT WAS SLIPPING OUT OF GEAR AND GOING BACK IN AGAIN. AFTER WE RETURNED HOME, THESE PROBLEMS WERE VERY INTERMITTENT. ABOUT 2 WEEKS LATER WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, THE VEHICLE SLIPPED OUT OF GEAR AND ALMOST CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP BEFORE RE-ENGAGING. WE BROUGHT IT TO THE FORD DEALER THE SECOND WEEK IN NOVEMBER. THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE ISSUE, HOWEVER THEY SAID THERE WAS A COMPUTER TECHNICIAN LOG THAT SUGGESTED A RESET. THEY RESET THE COMPUTER, CHANGED THE OIL, CHECKED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID, ETC. A FEW DAYS LATER THE TRANSMISSION WAS BACK TO SLIPPING INTERMITTENTLY. ON NOVEMBER 20, 2006, THE SEVERE PUNCHING BEGAN AGAIN, SO BAD THIS TIME THE VEHICLE ALMOST CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. WE HAD TO SHIFT THE GEAR INTO 2ND BEFORE IT ENGAGED AND WE WERE ABLE TO ACCELERATE. SINCE WE WERE ON VACATION, WE HAD TO CONTINUE ON OUR TRIP WITH THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING IN AND OUT OF GEAR. WHEN WE RETURNED FROM OUR TRIP, BACK TO THE FORD DEALER WE WENT. WE TOOK THE TRANSMISSION TECHNICIAN GUY FOR A TEST DRIVE AND LUCKILY WE WERE ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. HE WAS AMAZED, HADN'T SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT BEFORE. HE TALKED TO OTHER TRANSMISSION TECH'S WHO WERE STUMPED BY THE PROBLEM, TOO. HE ENDED UP CALLING FORD HEADQUARTERS AND SPOKE WITH THE ENGINEERS. THEY DECIDED A COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION WAS IN ORDER BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T SURE WHAT WAS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. *JB

AT 39,000 I ASKED THE DEALER TO RECHECK THE WHOLE CAR THAT IT WAS SHOWING TRANSMISSION AND BRAKE PROBLEMS. AT 43,000 MILES NOW IS SITTING IN THE FORD DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED AT SINCE LAST FRIDAY SEPT 22,2006. THE FORD DEALER MECHANICAL DIRECTOR WAS INSIDE THE CAR AND ME TEST DRIVING IT, AND COULD NOT BELIEVE THE PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION. HIS WORDS WERE' IF THIS WAS MY CAR I WOULD NOT BE SITTING IN IT, IT'S A RISK TO ANYONE'S LIFE" TODAY, FORD INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAVE TO BRING THE TRANSMISSION DOWN AND OPEN IT. THEY ASK ME EVERY TIME TO SIGN IN ACCEPTANCE THEY WILL PAY FOR EVERYTHING. IT IS BEING REPORTED TO CONSUMER AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT TOMORROW, I HAVE NOTIFIED THE BANK WHO GAVE ME THE LOAN. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE ALL THE CAR RENTAL EXPENDITURES I'VE HAD TO INCUR IN ADDITION TO CONSTANT REPAIRS PRIOR TO CAR REACHING 1 YEAR. *JB

ON THE TWO OCCASIONS THAT WE HAD SNOW THIS PAST WINTER, MY FORD 500 BEGAN TO SURGE UNCONTROLLABLY AND THE ENGINE FAILURE LIGHT CAME ON WHEN ACCELERATING. IT BECAME NECESSARY TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURN THE VEHICLE IGNITION OFF. WHEN I RESTARTED, THE TROUBLE LIGHT WAS OFF AND I CONTINUED MY JOURNEY HOME. WITHIN A FEW MINUTES THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED, ENGINE FAILURE LIGHT AND THE SURGING. NEEDLESS TO SAY, IT TOOK QUITE AWHILE TO GET HOME. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO AN AUTHORIZED FORD DEALER THE FIST TIME AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. AFTER THE SECOND SNOW STORM, AND THE SAME SYMPTOMS, THE DEALER SAID THE PROBLEM OCCURRED BECAUSE THE FILTER WAS INSTALLED BACKWARDS. SOMEWHAT SKEPTICAL, I ACCEPTED THEIR EXPLANATION BECAUSE OF MY GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH THE DEALER OWNER AND SERVICE MANAGER. WHILE AT WORK THE OTHER DAY, I NOTICED A CO-WORKER WITH A SIMILAR TYPE VEHICLE AND INQUIRED AS TO HOW SHE LIKED THE FORD 500. HER RESPONSE SHOCKED ME WHEN SHE STATED THAT SHE LIKED THE VEHICLE, BUT HAD TROUBLE THIS PAST WINTER IN THE SNOW. SHE DESCRIBED THE SAME PROBLEM THAT I HAD EXPERIENCED AND NOW I WONDER HOW MANY OTHER 2005 FORD 500 OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEMS. I AM HOPING THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ASSIST ME IN DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. *JB

DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD 500 SEL. THE VEHICLE WAS MADE WITH A SIX SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. WHEN GOING DOWN HILL IT HAS A OVERDRIVE IN THE TRANSMISSION. WHEN THE CONSUMER REMOVED HIS FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SPEED UP GOING DOWN HILL AND IF PRESSING THE BRAKES FOR A LONG DISTANCE, THE BRAKES WILL GET HOT. MANUFACTURER TOLD HIM THAT THIS WAS THE WAY THE VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED. THE CONTACT FELT THAT THERE SHOULD BE SOME WAY TO TURN THE OVERDRIVE OFF. HE OWNED OTHER FORD VEHICLES THAT HAD THE OPTION TO TURN THE OVERDRIVE OFF. *AK *JB

DT: LAST SUNDAY THE CONSUMER DISCOVERED SHE HAD A FLAT TIRE. WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE, THE MOTOR STARTING RACING AND MAKING A LOUD NOISE LIKE IT WAS REVVING UP. THE TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON. THE CONSUMER PLACED THE VEHICLE IN PARK THEN PUT IT INTO DRIVE AND IT WOULD NOT MOVE AT ALL. THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT ENGAGE. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHO COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THEY THINK IT WAS JUST A GLITCH. *JB

UPON PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN PARK IT WILL PUT ITSELF INTO REVERSE. THIS HAPPENED TWICE. GOING DOWN HILL THE AT 50 MPH THE SPEEDOMETER WILL DROP TO 20 MPH. LOSING TWO TO TWO AND ONE HALF MILES TO A GALLON. CONTACTED THE DEALER. TOOK THE VEHICLE IN. FORD HAD THE VEHICLE FOR FOUR WEEKS. FORD STATED THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM RECURRED. *AK
