While driving, the power steering warning light illuminated and steering assist was lost. The steering became extremely hard, especially at low speeds. The vehicle makes grinding/whining noises when turning, and the car vibrates while in Drive. This creates a serious safety concern, especially during turns and parking maneuvers. Issue appears to be electric power steering (EPAS) failure.
Power steering. While I was driving in my neighborhood the power steering went out and I could not make a turn. It locked up while driving. I could have got into a head on collision/accident becasue the road turns. Yes, I reported it to Ford and they told me my flex did not have a recall despite the ford website stating that some 2013 ford flex are affected. The description of 15s18 sterring recall matches my same issue and it poses a serious safety hazard. Yes, i took it to a mechanic at an auto shop and her is telling me that he can't fix recalls. At the time of the accident, i got No pre warning just the message that states: "Steering Lock Malfunction Service Now: The steering lock system has detected a condition that requires service." This happened on or around 11/23/25. I am requesting that Ford pay for my power steering to be fixed.

MY 2013 FORD FLEX ONLY HAS 109,600 MILES ON IT. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT THE MECHANIC SHOP. THE PROBLEM I AM HAVING IS WITH THE POWER STEERING ASSIST. SEVERAL TIMES IN THE LAST THREE WEEKS, WHEN I AM REVERSING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT SUDDENLY THE POWER ASSIST WARNING COMES ON AND THE CAR IS UNCONTROLLABLE. I HAVE HAD TO TOW IT TWICE. I AM NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO MANEUVER THE CAR WHEN IT LOCKS UP LIKE THAT. THERE WAS NO OTHER WARNING UNTIL I MADE THE ATTEMPT TO BACK UP THEN A WARNING MESSAGE CAME ON. THE MECHANIC WAS NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM . HE MADE SOME OTHER REPAIRS TO THE WHEEL HUB BEARINGS, SO WHEN I PICKED UP MY CAR AND IT DROVE FINE FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS, I THOUGHT IT WAS FIXED. BUT IT FROZE UP AGAIN UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS--TRYING TO BACK OUT OF A PARKING SPOT. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE MECHANIC AND ONCE AGAIN THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, BUT HE SAID THERE WAS A RECORD OF THE WARNINGS IN THE SYSTEM. MY SAFETY AS WELL AS THE SAFETY OF OTHER DRIVERS IS AT RISK, BECAUSE IF THIS GOES OUT WHILE IN TRANSIT, I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR. I ENJOY MY FLEX, BUT THE REPAIRS HAVE BEEN SO MUCH LATELY. ONE OF THE RECENT REPAIRS WAS THE EMERGENCY BRAKE COSTING 1,200. THE WHEEL HUB BEARINGS WERE 1,400 AND NOW THIS POWER STEERING ASSIST REPAIR IS ESTIMATED TO BE QUITE PRICEY. I AM PARTIALLY HANDICAPPED, RETIRED AND LIVING ON A VERY LIMITED INCOME. THESE EXPENSES ARE OUTRAGEOUS FOR SUCH A NICE CAR WITH SUCH LOW MILEAGE. DOES THIS MODEL HAVE ISSUES? I KEEP UP THE MAINTENANCE AND THE OIL CHANGES AND WHATEVER ELSE NEEDS TO BE DONE, BUT THESE EXPENSES ARE HITTING ALL AT ONCE AND PUTTING ME IN DEBT. IS THERE A POSSIBILITY THAT THERE IS A GLITCH IN THE MECHANICAL SYSTEM? I LOOKED UP RECALLS AND IT DOES SAY THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE POWER STEERING ASSIST. My electric power steering went out while driving. Everywhere online says the 2013 flex has a recall for this but when I enter my vin it says no recall. There has been several claims of this on my model year and accidents and dangers reported. I want to know my my vehicle isn’t showing up for the recall when it’s never been replaced by ford so it should be replaced by Ford.
Power Steering Assist Default. Power steering has intermittently gone out several times and when the vehicle is powered off and back on it would worked properly. July 15, 2025 121,471 miles it went out and will not reset. Fortunately, this happened at the car wash and not while driving. It could have been a very dangerous situation while driving. Had it towed home. I have reported to Ford Case# CXH-04975179 July 16, 2025 and was told to take it to the dealer for evaluation and the dealer may assist $ with the repair. The (Power Steering Assist Fault) appeared on the dash. This has happened intermittently over the past several months and gone away but not it will not go away and the vehicle in inoperable.
I went to drop my children off at school, backed out of the driveway fine everything was good. I went to turn the corner and my steering went really, really stiff. Thankfully I only live 2 blocks from the school and wasn't going over 15 mph. If I had been I'm scared of what could have happened.

There is a recall on models in this year but not the one I currently have. While driving on the highway my advancetrac warning lit up, the roads where dry and the was nothing to indicate why this was happening. So, I began to continue to drive on the highway and my steering wheel began to feel "jiggly". I kept two hands on the wheel the remaining drive and stayed within the min driving limit as any bump I experienced allowed for the car to be redireced even with two hands on the wheel. Once I made it off the highway to my destination I received three warning messages one system fault, one power steering service and one advancetrac. At this point when turning the car off and back on again the steering wheel became hard to turn. The red power steering message popped up again along with the advancetrac message. Because this issue happened while the car was in motion I find it hard to believe that this model is not apart of the recall. Now I have to foot the bill along with feeling like at any moment I could have crashed and lost my life during my time driving on the highway. My only hope for writing this is to ensure another look at the 2013 models that were not included in this recall so that other lives can be saved. I would not have a problem allowing this issue to be inspected. My safety and those along the highway were in danger because I could have lost control of the vehicle. The problem still remains, I have set an appointment for this issue. This happened 6/5/25. The warnings first appeared while driving the vehicle.

Power steering no longer works. Getting message on dash as well. I see a recall for my year truck but my vin apparently is not one included. It’s our only transportation and my daughter, my fiancé and myself all have multiple weekly therapy/dr appointments. Please consider adding my vin to the recall. As far as electrical my alarm will randomly go off while it’s not running/parked. Thinks doors are open when they are not. Thank you

Was driving and the power steering went out. Lost control of steering and almost went off the road. Called the dealer and was told that my vehicle is not part of the recall yet. There is curently a recall on 2011-2013 Ford Flex of power steering failure. Mine should be added to the recall because of the same safety risks.
2013 Ford Flex lost power steering, had to tow the vehicle home. Called Ford my vehicle was not covered under the recall, paid over $2000 to have it repaired.
I called the dealer to let them know of steering issue, not being able to turn wheel, then message came on dash board of "power steering assit fault". Dealer said my 2013 Flex was not covered under recall. Dealer said I could need to pay out of pocket, estimated $600.00.
Message came on the dash when driving in downtown traffic that says “power steering assist fault” and the steering wheel is FAR worse than the old cars with manual steering. Almost caused a wreck. I researched that there have been several recalls for that make, model, and problem with recall number 15S18. I called ford recall phone number and they said yes many have been recalled but it’s VIN specific and mine does not qualify because of either where it was built or what company made the component that has failed some have been recalled and some have not. Regardless of where it was made or who built the component if they are having problems and recalling most of them, I feel that my near accident caused by fords “power steering assist fault” that has done the exact same thing should be considered. If their product that they built can not be safely operated without causing accident bodily harm, and/or death and they refuse to correct the problem, maybe they shouldn’t be building vehicles. It’s not like the A/C quit working, it literally almost caused an accident with my wife and kids in the car and is absolutely not drivable…..AT ALL! I had to trailer it home. Only goes straight. I my 2013 Dorf Flex after stopping at a store and when I turned the vehicle on the steering wheel jerked my wheels straight. Then a error came up saying power steering assist reduced. I turned the vehicle off and started it back up a few minutes later and the problem when away. I am concerned that there is an issue with this and Ford is not addressing it based on google searches and other peoples experiences. There have been multiple reports saying that they almost got into an accident while going down the road and this had happened. We do not feel safe driving this vehicle in its current condition. I reached out to Ford and they say this vehicle based on the vin number does not have a current recall on it.
Electronic steering going in and out while driving. Dealer checked for codes no codes other models around the same year were recalled for the same issue. For some reason this one was not included but I have the same problems.

Power steering completely went out as we were driving jerking the wheel out of our hands , and almost causing an accident. An indicator on the dashboard says “power steering assist failure” . Shortly after that the traction control light/abs light came on as well. There were no warnings lamps, messages, or symptoms before this occurred and the power steering has been out ever since. This seems to be a Ford Flex recall problem and somehow ford doesnt want to cover the cost to repair/fix it because my VIN is not included in the recall.

While driving, just as I turned my steering wheel; it got very stiff to turn. If I was not able to turn, I easily could have drove into someone's house, pedestrians or hit other vehicles both parked and driving on the road. Especially if I were going very much faster and didn't have as much strength as I do. A week before this happened, I got a quick flash of a message twice that read "AdvanceTrack needs service". But after that ine trip a week ago, it never popped back up and still hasn't. Other than that, no warning lights or codes xan be found. I made it home (less than a half mile away). After having it checked by 2 different mechanics, both said it was the electric steering and told me to check the recalls for my 2013 Ford Flex SEL. I found that my particular VIN did NOT have the 2 recalls that affected numerous Ford vehicles with Electric Steering, including THE SAME YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL of my Ford Flex. The recall is for the power steering. I've also seen numerous other posts on fordflex.net where this has affected many Ford Flex vehicles from 2009 to 2018 with electric steering. The other issue I had is a known recall for other Ford Flex vehicles, but not my VIN, just like the previous. I was driving on the highway when my dash starts beeping and flashing at me wiyh an overheating issue. I had to do my best to get off the highway. Thankfully I was stopped when this happened and not far from the turn I needed to get me and my car to safety. Turned out to be the internal water pump. It cost me around $2,000.00 to get it fixed.
Ever since I purchased this vehicle, the power steering would stop working, warning lights: power train and another one would appear after it happens. I would shut my vehicle off and restart it, which would clear the issue and I would have no problems. This has happened several times, sometimes 2-3 times a week. However, two weeks ago, the power steering stopped altogether working and will not clear, even with restarting the vehicle.

I was driving down I-285 (Atlanta) with my two daughters in the car and both the “Service Power Steering” and “Service AdvanceTrac” lights came on. About 10-15 min into the drive, it became really hard to turn my steering wheel. We were still about 30 min from our house so I had no choice but to drive very slowly until we could get somewhere safe. While trying to turn off the interstate, my steering wheel completely locked up on me!!! Now my car is at my mother’s house because I couldn’t drive any further in fear of an accident. My mechanic put this car on a computer and no codes showed up. From my understanding there was a recall for this particular issue. The dealer I purchased the car from stated they were not aware of this issue and the car showed no signs that the power steering was about to go out.

OUR MECHANIC INFORMED US THAT THIS IS DEFINITELY A PART OF THE POWER STEERING RECALL ON THE 2013 FORD FLEX, HOWEVER WHEN I PULL MY VIN IT APPEARS THERE ARE NO RECALLS. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN AS I DRIVE 4 CHILDREN IN THIS VEHICLE DAILY. THE EPASS ELECTRONIC DRIVE BY WIRE STEERING SYSTEM FAILED AFTER 60K MILES. THIS WAS THE SAME EPASS SYSTEM IN THE OTHER 2013 FORD FLEX THAT WERE PART OF THE RECALL FOR THE EPASS FAILURE. WHEN THE EPASS SYSTEM FAILED THE VEHICLE LOST POWER STEERING AND COULDN'T BE DRIVEN. I SPENT $2,500 ON THE NEW PARTS AND MY CAR WAS IN THE SHOP FOR A WEEK.

SYMPTOMS OF MY FAILURE ARE IDENTICAL TO THOSE DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL. MECHANIC FOLLOWED TECHNICIAN INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE RECALL, BY FLASHING/UPDATING PSCM MODULE SOFTWARE. IN THE CASE OF THE POWER STEERING THE DEALER REPLACED THE MODULE FOR FREE BECAUSE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY BUT SAID MY VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. NOW I'M HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL DELIVERY EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL BUT THE DEALER STILL SAYS MY PARTICULAR VEHICLE IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT TURN RIGHT, I CROSSED A LANE OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND HIT A TREE ON SUNDAY 11 18 18. I WAS ON HIGHWAY 70 IN KINGSTON TENNESSEE, HEADED EASTBOUND. THE STEERING WHEEL IS VERY LOOSE AND IN A BIND AS IF THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED WITH KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION. I HIT THE TREE DOING ABOUT 35 MPH TO 40 MPH WHEN STEERING BECAME INOP AND THE AIRBAGS DID NOT EVEN DEPLOY. I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO SLOW THE VEHICLE FROM 50 MPH TO AROUND 35 MILES AN HOUR BEFORE STRIKING THE TREE OR COULD'VEBEEN MUCH WORSE. I SUSTAINED SHOULDER INJURY AND CAN ONLY HOPE THAT THIS VEHICLE BECOMES PART OF THE RECALL BECAUSE I COULD HAVE VERY EASILY HIT SOMEBODY HEAD ON AND KILLED SOMEONE OR MYSELF. VERY THANKFUL TO BE HERE BUT THIS COULD HAVE EASILY COST ME MY LIFE.

I SPOKE WITH MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP ABOUT THE ISSUE AND THEY RESPONDED THAT MY VIN NUMBER DOES NOT FALL IN THE CAMPAIGN OR TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS. CAMPAIGN FOR THE RECALL IS EXACTLY WHAT IS GOING ON WITH MY VEHICLE BUT YET FORD WANTS TO CHARGE ME MONEY FOR THE REPAIRS AND DIAGNOSTIC WHEN THEY ARE WELL AWARE THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURER ISSUE. TWO REPS TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND THE OTHER REP AND SUPERVISOR STATED I WOULD NEED TO TAKE MY VEHICLE TO A FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT A DEALERSHIP AND IT WOULD BE THEIR DISCRETION ON WHETHER THEY WILL FIX IT, DISCOUNT IT OR SOMETHING. I DON'T THINK IT IS THE DEALERSHIP'S RESPONSIBILITY AS THEY DID NOT MAKE THE VEHICLE, THEY ONLY SELL THEM. I SPOKE WITH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT MANAGER AT LANCE CUNNINGHAM FORD IN KNOXVILLE, TN AND HE AGREED AND STATED HE DIDN'T KNOW WHY THEY WOULD TELL ME THAT. STEERING SUDDENLY STOPPED! A SENSOR THAN CAME UP STATING SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC AND NOT EVEN 2 SECONDS LATER ANOTHER SENIOR COMES UP STATING POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT! I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER! I THEN READ CAR MANUAL STATING THAT THE SENSORS THAT WERE SHOWN HAVE TO DO WITH AN ELECTRIC POWER STEERING THAT CAN BE RESET BY SHUTTING OFF CAR AND RESTARTING 10 SECONDS LATER! I THEN BROUGHT IT TO KELLY FORD AND THEY ARE STATING THAT THE ENTIRE POWER STEERING RACK MUST BE REPLACED! THEY STATED THAT THERE ARE NO RECALLS ON MY VIN AND THAT I HAD NO WARRANTY! I BEGAN RESEARCH AND THERE HAVE BEEN OVER 500,000 CARS RECALLED FOR THE SAME EXACT REASON BUTVFORD INSIST THAT MINE IS NOT COVERED! FORD FLEX 2013 FAILED POWER STEERING ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2ND WHILE STEERING TO THE RIGHT (AND MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE) THE POWER STEERING ON MY 2013 FORD FLEX COMPLETELY FAILED CAUSING ME TO ALMOST DRIVE OFF A HILL INTO THE EMBANKMENT BELOW. A POWER STEERING FAILURE MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE DASH BOARD AS THIS WAS HAPPENING. THE CAR HAS ONLY 55,000 MILES. AFTER RETRIEVING THE VEHICLE, I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA FORD. I DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND FOUND A RECALL #15V340000 WAS FOR THIS EXACT POWER STEERING PROBLEM FOR 2011, 2012 AND SOME 2013 FORD FLEXES. AFTER RUNNING TESTS AT RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA FORD- A DIAGNOSIS OF DTC U3000:49 WAS FOUND SAYING POWER STEERING INTERNAL FAILURE. AFTER INITIALLY BEING LED TO BELIEVE (BY RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA FORD) THAT FORD WAS HONORING IT UNDER THE RECALL, TO MY SURPRISE FORD HAS DECLINED MY 2013 FORD FLEX SAYING IT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE INITIAL RECALL(NUMBER ABOVE. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY AND LIABILITY ISSUE. I COULD HAVE DRIVEN OFF A CLIFF WITH MY 3 KIDS IF IT FAILED AT THE WRONG MOMENT OR HIT OTHER CARS AND CAUSED SOMEONE ELSE HARM OR EVEN DEATH. THE POWER STEERING FAILED COMPLETELY WITHOUT NOTICE. I WAS UNABLE TO MANEUVER THE STEERING WHEEL AT ALL. I THINK OTHER OWNERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND HAVE IT TAKEN CARE OF BY FORD SO THEY ARE NOT AT RISK OR IN DANGER. FORD SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROTECTING THEIR CUSTOMERS AND REPLACING ALL DEFECTIVE POWER STEERING ISSUES. I HAVE ATTACHED PART OF THE INVOICE FOR YOU TO SEE THE DIAGNOSIS CODE. ON DECEMBER 31, 2015, I EXPERIENCED A POWER STEERING ASSIST FAILURE. THIS WARNING APPEARED IN THE DASH DISPLAY. I HAD NO POWER STEERING IN THE CAR. I WAS TRYING TO PULL OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. THE PROBLEM CONTINUED WHEN DRIVING. TURNING OFF AND RESTARTING THE CAR HAD NO EFFECT IN CLEARING THE FAILURE. ALSO HAD AN ADVANCE TRAC WARNING APPEAR ON THE DASH AND THE TURN SIGNALS WOULD ONLY OPERATE IF HELD MANUALLY IN POSITION. I KNOW THERE WAS A RECALL (FORD RECALL NUMBER 15S18) ISSUED WHICH COVERS THIS PROBLEM IN FORD FLEX VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE MINE. MY FLEX WAS BUILT 9/25/2012. THE DEALER CORRECTED THE PROBLEM BY REPLACING PSCM. HOWEVER, SINCE THE MILEAGE PUT THE CAR JUST OUT OF WARRANTY, I HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. IT APPEARS THAT THE STEERING PROBLEM CONTINUED ON CARS BUILT AFTER FEB. 2012 WHICH WAS THE BUILD DATE SPECIFIED IN THE ABOVE RECALL. I WOULD LIKE THE BUILD DATE FOR COVERED REPAIRS TO BE EXTENDED AND COMMUNICATED TO FORD MOTOR COMPANY. I AM UNABLE TO UPLOAD THE DOCUMENTATION AT THIS TIME.

TOOK ALL WE HAD TO AVOID GUARD RAIL, ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND DEATH ON THE TOP OF THIS MOUNTAIN. GOT IT TO A STOP. HAD TO FIND TOW TRUCK TO PULL IT OFF MOUNTAIN. DROPPED AT FORD DEALER AND WAS TOLD POWER STEERING FAILURE AND THEY REPLACED ENTIRE RACK. FORD WONT PAY RENTAL, TRAUMA FOR KIDS THAT WONT RIDE IN IT AGAIN, HAVE TO DRIVE 6 HRS TO GO GET CAR. RECENTLY, I DISCOVERED THAT FORD HAS ISSUED A RECALL NOTICE 15S18 FOR THIS ISSUE. ON MONDAY JULY 27, 2015, I CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE TO REQUEST REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE REPAIR. I WAS INFORMED BY THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL AND THAT THEY COULD PROVIDE NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. I WAS TURNING A CORNER AND SOMETHING POPPED AND THE CAR WOULD NOT STEER. THE ONLY THING THAT STOPPED THE CAR WAS THE CURVE, AS I WAS MAKING THE TURN, AND THAT CAUSED A LOT OF DAMAGE. AND THAT IT LOOKED LIKE SUTTON FORD LINCOLN IN MATTESON, IL RAISED THE CAR INAPPROPRIATELY AND CAUSED THE RADIATOR DAMAGE. THE REPAIR COMPANY SAID, SINCE THE ORIGINAL PLACE WHERE THE FLEX WAS TOWED TO (SUTTON FORD LINCOLN IN MATTESON, IL) WAS LOCATED RIGHT BEHIND THEM (ACROSS THE ALLEY), SUTTON FORD LINCOLN IN MATTESON, IL CAUSED THE DAMAGE.
