THIS IS FOR A FORD FOCUS ZX5 (4-DOOR HATCHBACK). AT 90K MILES PASSENGER BACK DOOR LOCK ASSEMBLY BROKE AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. REPLACED UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY AND COST $90. NOW THE DRIVERS BACK DOOR LOCK IS BROKEN. IT WILL NOT WORK MANUALLY OR ELECTRONICALLY. MY CHILDREN ARE ABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR WHETHER THE CAR IN PARK OR DRIVE SINCE THE ENTIRE LATCH AND LOCK ASSEMBLY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE FOR ANYONE RIDING IN THE BACKSEAT IF THEY ACCIDENTLY OPEN THE DOOR FOR WHATEVER REASON. MORE IMPORTANTLY, FOR ME, IT IS A SECURITY ISSUE IF MY CAR IS NEVER LOCKED. I HAVE LOOKED ONLINE AND SEEN MANY, MANY OTHERS WITH THIS EXACT ISSUE WITH THE SAME MAKE, MODEL, AND YEAR (AS WELL AS OTHER YEARS TOO). I LEARNED THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE WITH THE '05 MODEL BUT FORD FOR SOME REASON WILL NOT TAKE RESPONIBILITY FOR THE OTHER YEARS AS WELL. 3 OF 4 DOORS HAVE NOW BROKEN ON MY 2007 FOCUS, DUE TO THE SAME PROBLEM AS WHAT WAS RECALLED ON THE 05 MODEL -- THE DOORS WILL NOT LATCH AND/OR LOCK. THE DOOR MECHANISM IS THE SAME FOR 2000-07, SO I'M NOT SURE WHY 07 WAS NOT RECALLED AS WELL. I PAID THE DEALER OVER $1000 TO FIX THE FRONT DRIVER AND BACK PASSENGER DOORS IN 5/12, AND NOW IN 7/12, THE BACK DRIVER DOOR IS DOING THE SAME THING -- WHEN YOU GO TO SHUT IT, IT JUST POPS BACK OPEN, AS THE LATCH DOES NOT CATCH. I HAD TO DRIVE HOME FROM MY BABY SHOWER LAST NIGHT WITH THE REAR DOORS TETHERED TO EACHOTHER TO KEEP THE DOOR FROM FLAPPING OPEN WHILE I DROVE DOWN THE ROAD. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP, AS WELL AS FORD CORPORATE, AND HAVE BASICALLY BEEN TOLD IT'S NOT THEIR PROBLEM AND I AM ON MY OWN TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR, BECAUSE MY CAR IS "TOO OLD" (JUST 5 YEARS FROM MFG DATE) AND HAS "TOO HIGH MILEAGE" (NOT THAT THE DOORS HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH MILEAGE) FOR FORD TO TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT IS CLEARLY AN ISSUE OF CHEAP, FAULTY PARTS AND POOR WORKMANSHIP. THIS PROBLEM IS ALL OVER THE INTERNET, AND IS CLEARLY NOT ISOLATED TO MY VEHICLE. FORD SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THE FACT THAT THEY HAVE IGNORED THIS PROBLEM, WHICH COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY TO IT'S CUSTOMERS (JUST IMAGINE IF THE LATCH HAD STOPPED WORKING WHILE I WAS DOING 70 MPH DOWN THE HIGHWAY!), AND NEITHER I NOR ANYONE IN MY FAMILY WILL EVER BUY ANOTHER FORD! *TR

PASSANGER REAR DOOR LOCK WILL NOT LOCK WITH MANUAL OPERATION OR THE REMOTE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE OUR KIDS CAN JUST OPEN THE REAR DOOR BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO ABILITY TO LOCK THE DOOR WITH THE CHILD SAFETY LOCK FEATURE. THE LOCK IS JAMMED IN THE UNLOCK POSITION. THERE IS A RECALL ON THE 2005 FOCUS DOOR LOCKS BUT NOT THE 2007? THE LATCH LOCK ASSEMBLY IS THE SAME FROM 2000-2007 FORD MODEL YEARS. THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE REPORTING THIS ISSUE ALL OVER THE WEB. I HOPE PEOPLE START REPORTING THIS MORE ON THIS SITE. THE DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE ME $500 TO REPLACE THE JAMMED UNLOCKED DOOR LATCH THAT REQUIRES THE COMPLETE LATCH ASSEMBLY TO BE REPLACED. I BOUGHT A 2007 FORD FOCUS IN MAY 2009, AND SHORTLY AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR I STARTED HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE KEY GETTING STUCK IN THE IGNITION. YOU CAN MOVE THE CAR IN & OUT OF GEAR EVEN THOUGH THE KEY IS IN THE OFF POSITION, BUT UNABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY. I TOOK IT TO THE FORD GARAGE WHERE I BOUGHT IT, SAID THEY HAD NOT HEARD OF THE FOCUS HAVING THIS TYPE OF ISSUE EVEN THOUGH THEY HAD 2 FOCUS' IN THE GARAGE WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. DONNLEY FORD IN SHELBY OHIO STATED THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY THEY SOLD ME FOR AN EXTRA $80 A MONTH (WHICH THEY SAID AT TIME OF PURCHASE WOULD COVER EVERYTHING) AND WOULD COST BETWEEN $800-$1200 AND THE AFTER MARKET REPLACEMENT MAY NOT ACTUALLY FIX THE PROBLEM. I HAVE HAD THE KEY GET STUCK 11 TIMES IN THE PAST 4 MONTHS AND HAVE ONLY GOT THE RUN AROUND FROM THE DEALER INSISTING THIS IS NOT A COMMON PROBLEM IN THE FOCUS. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 FORD FOCUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG SENSOR WOULD CONTINUOUSLY ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE DEALER REMOVED THE ENTIRE DASHBOARD IN ORDER TO REPLACE THE MECHANISM. THE REPAIRS WERE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. LESS THAN A YEAR LATER, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AGAIN FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE TO THE STEERING WHEEL. IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR DOOR WOULD NOT LOCK AND THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG SENSOR CONTINUED TO ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURES. A DIAGNOSTIC WAS PERFORMED; HOWEVER, NO ERROR CODES WERE PRODUCED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT WHILE MAKING LEFT OR RIGHT TURNS, THE STEERING WHEEL FELT AS IF IT WOULD POP OFF. THE DEALER FOUND A DEFECT WITH THE STEERING COLUMN AND HAD THE COMPONENT REPLACED. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE FORD DEALER STATED THAT THERE MAY BE AN ISSUE WITH THE AIR BAGS FOR A PLETHORA OF REASONS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE DOES NOT FEEL SAFE OPERATING THE VEHICLE. HE WAS VERY LEARY OF OPERATING THE VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY DUE TO THE FACT OF NOT HAVING A FUNCTIONING AIR BAG IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. NO ADDITIONAL REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE AIR BAGS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 31,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 53,786.

I HAVE TWO PROBLEMS WITH DESIGN FLAWS IN MY 2007 FORD FOCUS SSE: (1) .BECAUSE OF WHERE THE DOOR LOCK IS LOCATED, JUST ABOVE THE DOOR HANDLES (FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDES) ALL THE DOORS WILL LOCK AT TIMES AND YOU DON'T REALIZE IT WHEN YOU OPEN, GET OUT, THEN CLOSE THE DOOR. MOST OFTEN IN SITUATIONS WHERE YOU HAVE LEFT THE MOTOR RUNNING WITH THE KEY NOW LOCKED INSIDE. THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE OF COMING IN CONTACT WITH THIS LOCK WITH YOUR FINGERS OR HAND WHILE OPENING THE DOOR WITH THE HANDLE. THIS HAS OCCURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS DESPITE NOW KNOWING WHAT CAUSES THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A COMPLETE NUISANCE AND DANGEROUS IF CHILDREN WOULD HAPPEN TO BE LEFT IN THE CAR WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING AND THE DOORS LOCKED AND NO SECOND KEY ON HAND. (2). THE SECOND PROBLEM I HAVE WITH THE AUTOMOBILE IS I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE "AUDI EFFECT" WHERE THE CAR ACCELERATES ON OCCASION WHEN BRAKING. THIS I ALSO ASCRIBE TO A DESIGN FLAW: THE BRAKE PEDAL AND GAS PEDAL ARE PLACED TOO CLOSE TOGETHER AND AT A RELATIVE CLOSE HEIGHT TO ONE ANOTHER. AFTER TAKING THE DEFENSIVE POSITION, IN A POTENTIAL BRAKING SITUATION, IF YOU HAVE TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE QUICKLY AND HARD, THE CAR ACCELERATES. THIS TAKES YOU COMPLETELY BY SUPRISE AND IT TAKES TIME TO RESPOND. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING THE SAME WAY FOR 45 YEARS, WITH MANY VEHICLES, AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM. LUCKILY THE CAR SAT MOST OF THE WINTER BECAUSE OF THE PROBLEM I DESCRIBED PREVIOUSLY AND NO ONE HAD THIS EXPERIENCE ON SNOW COVERED OR ICY ROADS. I BROUGHT THIS UP AT THE END OF APRIL IN A VISIT TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD TO FILE A COMPLAINT BY SERVICE MANAGER STEVE LOVALVO. I WANT TO BRING BOTH OF THESE DEFECTS TO YOUR ATTENTION BECAUSE I FEEL THAT I HAVE LEASED A LEMON THAT HAS PROBLEMS THAT CANNOT BE SERVICED BY THE DEALERSHIP AND PRESENTS POTENTIAL PROBLEMS FOR MANY OTHER DRIVERS ALSO. *TR

Feb 27, 2007 Crash

I HAVE SOME MAJOR CONCERNS WITH MY BRAND NEW FORD FOCUS. I WAS IN A VERY MINOR CAR ACCIDENT. THE ONLY DAMAGE TO MY VEHICLE WAS A COUPLE OF CRACKS IN THE FRONT BUMPER, LOSS OF THE FORD EMBLEM AND CRACKED GRILL. THE FRONT WAS NOT CAVED IN OR THE GRILL EITHER. THE SUPPORT BRACKETS FOR THE GRILL WERE STILL IN TACT. ABSOLUTELY NO DAMAGE TO THE HOOD. AS I GOT BACK ONTO THE ROAD THE HOOD FLEW UP AND SMASHED OUT THE WINDSHIELD, AND SOME DAMAGE TO THE ROOF. THE HOOD LATCH ASSEMBLY, IN MY OPINION, WAS POORLY CONSTRUCTED. THE MIDDLE PART OF THE LATCH IS METAL BUT IT IS INCASED IN PLASTIC. KEEP IN MIND THAT WHEN THE HOOD FLEW UP, THE HOOD LATCH ASSEMBLY WAS STILL ATTACHED TO THE HOOD. THIS IS NOT A VERY GOOD SAFETY FEATURE FOR THE VEHICLE. NOT ONLY HAS THE VEHICLE INCURRED MORE DAMAGE THEN WAS NECESSARY, I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OR COULD HAVE SERIOUSLY HURT SOMEONE ELSE ON THE FREEWAY AS I COULD NOT SEE ANYTHING WILL THE HOOD COVERING MY WINDSHIELD. IF NEED BE I WILL GLADLY FORWARD PICTURES ON MY BADLY DAMAGED CAR. *NM
