The rear wheel well has rusted on both sides and completely rusted out a large hole (approx. 1 ft diameter area visibly effected) in the the body of the van. The rusted out section is where the back seat is anchored to the frame, so the rust has cause the seat to no longer be securely anchored to the car. The hole has also caused electrical wires to get wet when water gets into the van and intermittently and unpredictably causing failure of electrical features, including headlights and blinkers, while driving.
I WROTE ON THIS YESTERDAY BUT DID SOME MORE RESEARCH ON THIS VEHICLE. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS RECALLS ON THESE TYPE OF VEHICLES. RECALL #12V006000 ON THE TORQUE CONVERTER OUTPUT SHAFT. RECALL BEGAN AUGUST 9 2012. THIS IS A SERIOUS MATTER I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE TO TAKE MY 8 GRANDCHILDREN AROUND. NOW I WON'T EVEN PUT THEM IN IT. I ALSO FOUND OUT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE BACK SEAT. RECALL # 13V081000. THIS IS ALSO A PROBLEM WHEN YOUR HAULING AROUND CHILDREN. THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE VEHICLE IS REALLY RUSTY. I WISH I WOULD OF NEVER BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE. IT SURE IS GOING TO BE A MONEY PIT FOR SURE. IT ONLY HAS 141000 MILES ON IT. VERY SAD THAT FORD COULD MAKE SUCH A UNSAFE VEHICLE. I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE AND IT SEEMED FINE. 5 DAYS INTO OWNERSHIP THE TORQUE CONVERTER LIGHT CAME ON WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT. I HAD TAKEN MY VAN IN TO BE REPAIRED THEY INFORMED ME THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO ORDER THE PARTS WHICH TOOK 2 WEEKS UPON RETURNING THEY INFORMED ME THEY NEED ANOTHER PART THEY FORGOT TO ORDER SO I WAITED FOR MY CALL BACK AGAIN.. WITHIN 2 MONTHS TIME I RETURNED TO HAVE IT WORKED ON THAT IS WHEN THEY HAD TOLD ME IT HAD BEGUN TO CORRODE N THAT THEY COULDN'T INSTALL THE PARTS I ASKED THEM ABOUT THE SITUATION FURTHER & IF IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE THEY HAD SAID YES & HANDED ME MY KEYS SO UPON LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP I HAD STOPPED FOR FOOD ON MY WAY HOME I SMELT BURNT RUBBER THEN A THUDDING NOISE I HAD PULLED OVER TO CHECK IT OUT LUCKILY I WAS TO CLOSE TO A FAMILY MEMBERS HOUSE A PIECE HAD FALLEN OFF N WAS RUBBING ON MY TIRE MY TIRES HAD ALMOST CAUGHT FIRE WHEN LUCKILY I HAD GOTTEN THE BABY OUT BEFORE ANYTHING HAD HAPPENED THE NEXT DAY A MECHANIC HAD INFORMED ME A HOLE WAS BURNT THREW THE FLOOR WHERE THE WHEEL WELLS WERE N THE TIRES ALMOST CAUGHT FIRE HE SAID HE COULD WELD THE PARTS SO FRENCHIES FORD COULD FIX WHAT THEY HAD TO FIX .. THE NEXT DAY HE INFORMED ME HE HAD LOOKED UP THE PARTS N CAME ACROSS THIS WEBSITE STATING IT HAD BEEN RECALLED I HAD TOLD HIM WHAT HAPPENED & INFORMED ME TO TAKE LEGAL MATTERS DUE TO FAULTY PARTS . WHEN GOING TO PUT ITEMS IN THE BACK OF THE VAN, THE HATCH DOOR SUDDENLY CAME DOWN AND HIT ME IN THE BACK/SHOULDER LEAVING A BRUISE AND SOME SWELLING. WHEN TRYING TO GET OUT FROM UNDER THE DOOR I BUMPED MY HEAD A LITTLE AS IT WAS VERY HEAVY! SO, WE WERE PROPPING THE HATCH WITH A TWO-BY-FOUR WHILE WE TRY TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO FIX IT. THEN ONLY A FEW DAYS LATER, THE HANDLE TO THE HATCH JUST CAME OFF INTO MY HAND WHEN TRYING TO OPEN UP THE HATCH! THERE HAD BEEN NO PRIOR WARNING TO EITHER INCIDENT. TOOK IT TO A FORD DEALER TODAY AND IT COST $53.99 JUST TO LOOK AT IT TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS AND THEY SAID IT WILL BE ANOTHER $440 + TAX TO REPAIR!!!!! THIS IS ONLY TO REPAIR THE HANDLE BACK ONTO THE HATCH JUST SO THAT WE CAN ACTUALLY OPEN IT AGAIN AND START USING IT AGAIN!!!!! WE HAVEN'T EVEN TALKED ABOUT THE COST OF REPAIRING THE SHOCKS TO THE HATCH, OR WHATEVER THAT ISSUE IS!!! THE FORD DEALER SAYS THE ROD AND CABLE HAS FAILED AND NEEDS REPLACED, BUT CAN'T EXPLAIN TO ME HOW THIS CAN HAPPEN WITH NO PRIOR WARNING, OR WHY EITHER INCIDENT HAPPENED AT ALL. CALLED KOONS FORD ANNAPOLIS AND HAD THE CAR TOWED THERE THE NEXT DAY (SINCE THE INCIDENT OCCURRED ON A SUNDAY). THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR 1 WEEK AND COULD NOT CONFIRM OR DUPLICATE ANY OF THE CONDITIONS. POSSIBLY PCM BUT NOT SURE.THEY FOUND ONE ERROR WHILE DRIVING IT , BUT THE COMPUTER COULD NOT FIND IT. PAID FOR DIAGNOSTIC TEST. CAR HAS BEEN RUNNING FINE UNTIL 7/6/13 WHEN EXACTLY THE SAME THING HAPPENED. TOOK BACK TO FORD AND 2 DAYS LATER WAS TOLD IT WAS THE PCM. COULD NOT SAY HOW LONG IT WOULD TAKE TO GET A NEW ONE AS FORD DOES NOT HAVE THEM IT STOCK, BUT FOR $1300.00 COULD PLACE THE ORDER. FOUND A FORD TECH BLOG THAT DESCRIBES EXACTLY WHAT EVERY ONE IS GOING THROUGH AND HOW TO FIX IT. WATER IS LEAKING UNDER THE COWL AND SHORTING OUT THE PCM. THIS INFORMATION IS A COLLECTION OF INCIDENTS THAT ULTIMATELY FIT TOGETHER. I HAVE NOTICE THAT THE FLOOR BOARD OF MY VAN WAS WET. SINCE I HAVE 3 KIDS I JUST SHRUGGED IT OFF. THIS PAST WEEK I NOTICE THE FLOOR MATS WEREN'T WET ONLY THE CARPET BENEATH IT WAS SOAKED. MY KIDS DON'T SPILL JUST UNDER THE MATS. THE WATER MUST BE ENTERING FROM THE OUTSIDE IN. THE VAN WAS ACTING WEIRD ON AND OFF -NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT UNTIL IT STARTED HAPPEN MORE FREQUENTLY. JUNE 2012, I GOT THE P1340 CODE THAT THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR HAD GONE BAD, I REPLACED IT, WENT OUT AGAIN, I WAS TOLD IT COULD HAVE BEEN A FAULTY PART, CHANGED IT AGAIN, WENT OUT AGAIN, DECIDED THIS IS BEYOND ME. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY "FIXED" THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR AND ANOTHER PART THAT WAS CAUSING THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR NOT TO WORK. ($900) IT BROKE AGAIN BECAUSE THE PART THEY PUT IN WAS DEFECTIVE. THEY REPLACED THE DEFECTIVE PART AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AGAIN. AFTER THEY HAD THE CAR FOR 2 WEEKS THEY FOUND ANOTHER SMALL PROBLEM. ($130) I INSISTED AT THE TIME THAT THEY DIDN'T MAKE THE PROPER REPAIRS. THEY ASSURED ME THAT IT ALL STILL NEEDED TO BE DONE. (CAUGHT SOME DOUBLE TALK) I EXPERIENCED A FEW MORE ISSUES WITH THE VAN LOSING POWER. (JULY,SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER -CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DID NOT TURN ON.) I:N DECEMBER THE CAR TURNED OFF AND I WAS ONLY ABLE TO GET ABOUT 25FT PER RESTART AND THE LIGHT CAME ON. I'VE NOTICED OTHER FEATURES NOT WORKING PROPERLY OR WORKING INTERMITTENTLY. (POWER LOCKS, POWER WINDOWS, RADIO, POWER DOORS, KEY REMOTE ...) I HAVE LEARNED THAT OTHER 2005 FREESTAR OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED SIMILAR INCIDENTS CAUSED BY WATER LEAKING INTO THE CAR THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD WIPER BLADES AND RUNNING DOWN THE WIRE HARNESS CAUSING MULTIPLE PARTS TO SHORT OUT FROM TIME TO TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE AND SUGGESTED THAT THE AUTOMATIC DOORS SHOULD BE DISCONNECTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 108,900 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 109,500.

THERE IS SUBSEQUENTLY NO WAY TO USE THE THIRD ROW SEATS AND A LARGE HOLE IN THE WALL OF THE VEHICLE THAT IS OPEN TO THE OUTSIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND HE WAS ADVISED THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED SINCE THE DEALER HAD TO ORDER THE PARTS. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY FORD FREE STAR 2005 VAN IT HAS 50,600 MILES ON IT. IT ALL STARTED WHEN THE SPEEDOMETER AND ODOMETER STOPPED WORKING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THEN A FEW SECONDS LATTER THE VAN JUST DIED WHILE DRIVING WITH MY TWO YEAR OLD TWINS IN THE CAR. I WAS ABLE TO START IT UP AGAIN AND IT STARTED TO SPUTTER AND STALL AGAIN. I AM A MECHANIC AND I WAS GOING TO ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE MYSELF UNTIL I WENT ON LINE AND FOUND OUT THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THE PCM GETTING WET AND I FOUND OUT MINE WAS WET AND CORRODED. THE PCM WAS GETTING WET BY WATER GETTING THROUGH THE CROWL GASKET. I ALSO FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS A TSB OUT ON THIS DIRECTING DEALERS HOW TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM AT COST TO THE CUSTOMER. THE PCM WAS REPLACED NOW THE VEHICLE SHIFTS FUNNY AND GOES IN AND OUT OF GEAR AND I WAS TOLD I HAVE TRANSMISSION DAMAGE NOW. I CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY BASICALLY TOLD ME OH WELL, NOT OUR PROBLEM. BUT HOW IS THIS MY PROBLEM FOR A VEHICLE I DID NOT DESIGN. WATER SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET TO THE PCM. NOW MY VEHICLE SITS AT A DEALER AND THE DEALER SAID THAT ALL PLUG IN CONNECTORS TO SENSORS. AND VITAL COMPUTER COMPONENTS ARE WET AN CORRODED. I HAVE HAD RECURRING PROBLEMS WITH MY AUTOMATIC REAR DOORS. THE DOOR ON THE DRIVER SIDE DOES NOT ALWAYS CLOSE PROPERLY AND WHEN I BACK UP THE DOOR AJAR LIGHT COMES ON. THE PASSENGER REAR DOOR DOES NOT OPEN WITH THE OVERHEAD BUTTON ALL THE TIME, IT DOES NOT SEEM TO UNLOCK. I HAVE HAD IT IN THE SHOP SEVERAL TIMES (AT LEAST 6 OR MORE) AND MOST OF THE TIME THEY SAY THEY CAN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE SEEN THE DOOR NOT CLOSE PROPERLY BEFORE. THEY ORDERED PARTS AND SAID IT WAS "FIXED" BUT I'M STILL HAVING THE PROBLEM AND AGAIN THEY SAY THEY CAN NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. I HAVE EXPLAINED TO THEM THAT MY TODDLER SITS IN THE SEAT BEHIND ME AND IT IS DANGEROUS WHEN I'M BACKING OUT AND THE DOOR OPENS!!!! MY OTHER PROBLEM, THAT THEY ALSO SAY THEY CAN'T DUPLICATE, IS THAT WHEN I'M DRIVING ABOUT 45 MPH ON A DRY SURFACE THAT THE VAN STARTS JERKING. THEY TOLD ME MY TIRES NEED ROTATING, I TOLD THEM I KNEW THAT WAS NOT THE CAUSE AND NOT TO ROTATE THE TIRES. ABOUT 1 MONTH LATER I REPLACED 2 OF THE TIRES AND HAD THE FRONT TIRES ROTATED TO THE BACK AND THE NEW TIRES PUT ON THE FRONT AND AGAIN, I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD ABOUT 45 MPH AND THE VAN STARTED JERKING AGAIN. WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE NEW FROM THE DEALER IN SEPTEMBER 2005. IN THE WINTER OF 05-06, THE DOORS MALFUNCTIONED ON REPEATED OCCASIONS. WE HAD OVER 3 INSTANCES WHERE THE EXTREME COLD WOULD CAUSE THE AUTOMATIC DOOR FEATURE TO OPEN AND CLOSE THE DOORS RANDOMLY, EVEN WHILE THE CAR WAS IN TRANSIT. THERE WAS ONE INSTANCE IN WHERE BOTH SIDE PASSENGER DOORS OPENED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, EVEN THOUGH THE DOORS HAD BEEN LOCKED WHEN WE CHECKED THEM. WE ALSO HAD AN INSTANCE IN WHERE THE REAR DOOR OPENED IN OUR FRIEND'S DRIVEWAY AT NIGHT, WHEN THE TEMPERATURE WENT BELOW 0. WE FOUND THE ONLY WAY TO GUARANTEE THE DOORS STAY CLOSED IN THE WINTER IS TO DISENGAGE THE AUTOMATIC DOOR OPENER FEATURE. WE BROUGHT THE CAR TO OUR DEALER AND WE WERE TOLD THEY COULD FIND NO ISSUE WITH THE CAR. IN EARLY 2007, NEW JERSEY EXPERIENCED A COLD SPELL WHICH RESULTED IN BELOW FREEZING TEMPERATURES. IT WAS AT THIS TIME THAT WHILE MY HUSBAND WAS GETTING SOMETHING OUT OF THE BACK OF THE VAN, THE HYDRAULIC FEATURE FAILED AND SLAMMED THE DOOR ON HIS HEAD. HE DID NOT SUFFER LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES, BUT DID GET BUMPED AND BRUISED. WE CONTACTED THE DEALER, BECAUSE IN 2006 THE HYDRAULICS HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO A RECALL AND WE DID SO, AND THE DEALER HAD US BRING THE CAR IN FOR SERVICING AGAIN. ONCE THE SYSTEM WAS REPLACED FOR THE SECOND TIME, WE WERE TOLD BY FORD THAT WITH EXTREME TEMPERATURE CHANGE, THIS ISSUE CAN OCCUR YEAR AFTER YEAR AND THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT. I FIND THIS TERRIBLE CONSIDERING I ONLY LIVE IN NEW JERSEY, NOT ALASKA. MY CAR'S HYDRAULIC SYSTEM SHOULD NOT FAIL EVERY TIME IT GETS COLD, AND EVEN WORSE, I WAS TOLD THAT ONCE MY WARRANTY EXPIRES, IT WILL BE ON ME TO KEEP REPLACING THE PARTS THAT FREEZE. 3 YEAR OLD CHILD WAS GETTING OUT OF FREESTAR AND LEANED INTO THE SWITCH TO CLOSE THE DOOR; DOOR BEGAN TO CLOSE ON CHILD. AS I WAS REACHING IN THE DOOR I WAS KNOCKED DOWN AND THE DOOR CONTINUED TO CLOSE ON MY BODY BRUISING MY SHOULDER AND HIP AREA. I HAD TO USE ALL MY STRENGTH TO PUSH THE DOOR BACK.
