I PURCHASED A 2006 FORD FREESTAR VAN ON 10-13-2020 AND 10-16-2020 CAR LIGHTS STARTED BLINKING ON AND OFF IN AN OUTSIDE THE VAN. STARTED TO DRIVE HOME THE VAN STARTED JERKING BAD AND SMOKING. CUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WHILE MY CHILDREN AN PREGNANT DAUGHTER IN LAW WERE IN THE VAN. THE AXLE BROKE AND MY TRANSMISSION FLUID IS LEAKING MY GEARS CHANGE BUT VAN WON'T MOVE.

MY 2006 FORD FREE STAR, LOST IT GEARS IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING ON A BUSY HWY. I WAS REVERSING OUT OF A DRIVE WAY ON TO THE HWY AND WENT TO GO INTO D AND IT WOULD NOT MOVE IT WOULD ONLY GO INTO FIRST GEAR. I THINK THIS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND FORD SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR IT POOR DESIGN. ME AND MY CHILDREN COULD OF BEEN HURT OR EVEN WORSE KILLED. THE HWY IS 65 MPH AN I'M STUCK ACROSS THE TWO LANES. BECAUSE THE VAN WONT SHIFT. I LOOKED ONLINE AND THIS HAPPENS A LOT WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL. AND IT NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE LOST POWER WELL DRIVING ON THE HWY IN THIS VAN DUE TO POOR DESIGN.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD FREESTAR. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED AND PLACED IN REVERSE, THE RPMS INCREASED. THE FAILURE HAD BEEN OCCURRING FOR APPROXIMATELY FIVE YEARS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE BUT SAID THEY WERE NO LONGER FIXING THAT ISSUE. IT CAN HAPPEN ON DRIVE OR REVERSE AND WHILE I AM TURNING INTO ALONE IT WILL TURN OFF SO I HAVE TO RUSH AND PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND START IT SO I DON'T CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I WENT THROUGH AN AUTOMATIC CAR WASH AROUND 315PM. THE VAN WAS DRIVING FINE UP TO THIS POINT. IMMEDIATELY AFTER I LEFT THE CARWASH, THE VAN STARTED ACTING LIKE IT WAS GOING TO STALL OUT AND THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS BLINKING. I'VE HAD ONE OTHER SITUATION LIKE THIS WITH THIS VAN WHEN WE WENT AWAY FOR A WEEKEND AND IT RAINED A LOT WHERE WE WERE STAYING. THE VAN ACTED LIKE IT WAS GOING TO STALL BUT WE HAD NO IDEA WHY. I WENT ONLINE TO SEE IF ANYONE ELSE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THEIR VAN THAT WAS ATTRIBUTED TO WATER. I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE HOW MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN. I ALSO FOUND AN INVESTIGATION THAT STATED THERE IS A DEFECT AND IT'S A SAFETY CONCERN BUT THAT THEY WEREN'T GOING TO ISSUE ANY RECALLS AT THIS TIME BECAUSE THERE HAVEN'T BEEN ENOUGH COMPLAINTS. THE DIAGNOSIS FROM THE FORD DEALERSHIP IS AS FOLLOWS-WATER HAS LEAKED INTO THE PCM. THEY WOULD NEED TO CLEAN THAT OUT AND SEAL IT SO WATER CAN'T LEAK INTO IT ANYMORE. WATER HAS ALSO LEAKED INTO MY SPARK PLUGS AND CORRODED THEM. THEY WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE SPARK PLUGS AND WIRING. WATER HAS ALSO LEAKED INTO MY FUEL LINES SO THEY WANT TO CLEAN OUT MY FUEL LINE. ALL OF THIS FOR OVER $700.00. WHEN I CONTACTED FORD MOTORS BECAUSE THIS HAPPENED DUE TO A MANUFACTURING DEFECT, THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY CAN'T HELP ME BECAUSE THERE AREN'T ANY RECALLS. I CAN'T SAY I'M SURPRISED BY THAT SINCE THEY HAVEN'T TAKEN RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS DEFECT WITH OTHERS AND DON'T SOUND LIKE THEY EVER WILL. I'M NOT PAYING FORD TO FIX IT BECAUSE THIS ISN'T NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR AND IT'S NOT CAUSED BY ANYTHING THAT I HAVE DONE. I'M GOING TO TAKE MY CHANCES WITH THE VEHICLE WHILE I TRY TO PURSUE THIS ANOTHER WAY. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD IN THE RAIN AND THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THEN THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SPUTTER AND ACTED LIKE IT WAS GOING TO STALL OUT. THIS HAPPENED TO ME SEVERAL MORE TIMES OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS. I STARTED TO NOTICE A PATTERN OF IT ONLY HAPPENING WHEN IT WAS RAINING OUTSIDE. OTHERWISE, THE VEHICLE RAN FINE IN GOOD WEATHER. I REALIZED WATER WAS GETTING INTO THE ENGINE SOMEHOW. OUR MECHANIC THOUGHT IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE SPARK PLUGS AT FIRST. THEN IT KEPT HAPPENING SO WE HAD IT IN THE SHOP AGAIN. WATER WAS FOUND TO BE LEAKING INTO THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. I STARTED TO RESEARCH THE PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND SEVERAL CUSTOMERS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR VEHICLES. APPARENTLY IT IS A WELL KNOWN DEFECT IN THE MANUFACTURING OF THIS VEHICLE. I FEEL FORD SHOULD TAKE ACTION AND RECALL THESE CARS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS TRAGICALLY INJURED FROM THEIR MINIVAN LOSING POWER ON A BUSY HIGHWAY. *TR

HAVING RESEARCHED THOROUGHLY ONLINE FOR THIS PROBLEM, CLEARLY, MINE IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT, AS THERE ARE NUMEROUS OTHER 2006 FORD FREESTAR OWNERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME TORQUE CONVERTER FAILURE BETWEEN 120K AND 150K MILES, COMPLAINTS STATED IN MANY FORD FORUMS AND OTHER INTERNET VENUES. OF THE 75+ I READ, ABOUT 50% HAD REGISTERED A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE TORQUE CONVERTER FAILURE IN THE 06 FREESTARS WITH NHTSA. CLEARLY, FORD NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM IN THE 2006 AS WELL. I PULLED OVER IN A PARKING LOT. NONE OF THE GEARS ON VAN WERE WORKING. I WAS VERY FORTUNATE THAT I WAS NOT ON HIGHWAY AND NOT TRAVELING AT A HIGH SPEED. THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND FORD KNOWS IT. THEY DID A RECALL ON THE 2004-2005 TORQUE CONVERTER BUT NOT THE 2006. I HAVE SPOKEN TO SEVERAL REPAIR FACILITIES INCLUDING A FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY ADVISED ME THAT THEY ALL USE THE SAME TRANSMISSION. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT FORD WOULD CONSIDER THE TORQUE CONVERTER ISSUE A SAFETY RECALL BUT NOT ONE FOR THE 2006 FREESTAR. ( NOT TO MENTION THE COST OF TOWING) I FOUND OUT THAT THE 2004 AND 2005 FREESTAR TORQUE CONVERTERS WERE ON RECALL. WHY WERE THE 2006 MODELS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS? I WAS TOLD THEY HAVE THE SAME TRANSMISSION AND SUCH. I WILL BE HOLDING ONTO MY RECEIPT IN HOPES THAT WE CAN BE REIMBURSED FOR THIS MAJOR INCONVENIENCE AND SAFETY ISSUE. I HAD IT TOWED TO A LOCAL SHOP WHERE I WAS REFERRED TO COTTMAN TRANSMISSION TO GET IT EVALUATED. COTTMAN TRANSMISSION SAID THE TRANSMISSION WAS FULL OF WATER AND COMPLETELY BURNED UP. THEY SAID THAT THESE VANS HAVE A PROBLEM WITH WATER LEAKING THROUGH THE WIPER VENTS ONTO THE TOP OF THE PCM AND WATER ENTERING INTO THE TRANSMISSION. UPON MORE INVESTIGATION I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT FORD HAS EVEN ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM AND STILL HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL. THEY HAVE ISSUED A RECALL ON SOME OF THE 04 AND 05'S FOR TORQUE CONVERTER ISSUES THAT SOUND LIKE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE 06'S. SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS BECAUSE I WAS TRAVELING ON A BUSY HIGHWAY WITH MY WIFE AND KIDS AND HAD THE TRANSMISSION LOCKED UP I COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS, POSSIBLY EVEN FATAL, WRECK BECAUSE OF FORD'S FAILURE TO CORRECT A PROBLEM THAT THEY KNOW EXISTS! I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE IN JAN. 06, STARTER WENT 11 MONTHS LATER. VAN HAS NEVER STARTED UP CORRECTLY. IT DOESN'T RUN SMOOTHLY. RUNS ROUGH WHEN IT RAINS. FOUND INFO ONLINE REGARDING WATER LEAKING INTO THE PCM WHICH CAN CREATE MISFIRES, SHIFT LATE, ENGINE CAN RUN ROUGH. I HAVE TAKEN IT BACK TO ECHELON FORD SEVERAL TIMES. THEY STILL WON'T ADMIT TO IT BEING A PROBLEM. COULDN'T FIND A CODE. HOWEVER, NOW THAT I AM OUT OF WARRANTY, THEY WERE ABLE TO FIND A CODE. FORD ARE NOT BACKING UP THERE PRODUCT! THERE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THESE VEHICLES AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE! I HAVE 1 YEAR LEFT TO PAY, AND CAN'T AFFORD TO MAKE REPAIRS THAT FORD SHOULD BE FIXING SINCE IT STARTED WHEN I HAD THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY...WHY WILL FORD NOT DO SOMETHING..? I HAVE A WIFE WHO DRIVES IT WITH 4 KIDS. WHAT ARE THEY WAITING FOR, AN ACCIDENT...? WHAT HAS TO HAPPEN TO GET THEM TO FIX THIS PROBLEM ON THERE VEHICLES. FORD IS SAYING IT'S MISS FIRING IN CYLINDER 3. PROBABLY BECAUSE OF ALL THE WATER THAT HAS EFFECTED THE PCM, AND THE IGNITION COIL PACK & IGNITION WIRES NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, WHY WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED IN A 5 YEAR OLD VEHICLE... I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH ON BUSY HIGHWAY, MY FORD FREESTAR WOULD NO LONGER ACCELERATE. LOOKING IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR, THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM MY VEHICLE. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER I NOTICED THE SMOKE, THEN MY THERMOSTAT WENT ALL THE WAY FROM C TO HOT IN A SPLIT SECOND. NO WARNING, CAR SMOKING AND MY BRAKES AND GAS WAS NOT WORKING. I TRIED TO PULL OVER SAFELY AND GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE QUICKLY. MY VAN WAS ENGULFED WITH SMOKE, AN AMBULANCE PULLED OVER TO ASSIST ME. THE CAR FIRE WAS PUT OUT AND TOWED TO A FORD DEALER. IT WAS MY TRANSMISSION THAT BLEW. IT WAS COVERED BY WARRANTY AND FIXED. I WAS TOLD IT WAS A BAD TRANSMISSION. ONE YEAR AND TWO WEEKS LATER, MY FORD FREESTAR WAS NOT SHIFTING GEARS, I WAS GETTING STUCK, IN REVERSE. WHEN I SHIFT TO DRIVE, IT DOES NOT GO FORWARD. MY CAR HAD TO BE TOWED AGAIN TO THE SAME FORD DEALER. I WAS TOLD MY TRANSMISSION WAS FILLED WITH WATER AND THE 1 YEAR WARRANTY I PURCHASED THE YEAR BEFORE WAS SHORTED BY TWO WEEKS. FORD WOULD NOT HONOR MY WARRANTY DUE TO IT BEING OVER BY 2 WEEKS TIME FRAME. SO, I THEN PURCHASED ANOTHER TRANSMISSION WITH ANOTHER WARRANTY. NOW IN 2012, A YEAR LATER, MY TRANSMISSION THAT I PURCHASED LAST YEAR IS DOING THE SAME THING, GETTING STUCK IN GEARS, WHEN I ACCELERATE, MY FREESTAR JUMPS. EVERY TIME IT RAINS, THIS CAR STALLS. WHEN I TOOK TO MY MECHANIC, HE SAYS THIS IS A HORRIBLE CAR. POORLY MADE AND IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED. APPARENTLY IT STALLS IN THE RAIN DUE TO THE SEALING FROM FORD? WHY AND HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? THIS VEHICLE IS A HORRIBLE SAFETY PROBLEM. I AM FORTUNATE MY CHILDREN WERE NOT WITH ME IN THE FIRST CAR FIRE. WHEN IS FORD OR THE SAFETY COUNCIL GOING TO INVESTIGATE THIS CAR? THE VAN HAS BEEN HARD TO START JUST RECENTLY PAST MONTH IT TAKES 4 TURNS OF KEY TO START , VAN DIES WHILE DRIVING, BATTERY HAS DIED . TOOK TO FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY CANT FIND ANYTHING WRONG AT ALL . THEY HAD ME REPLACE , FUEL PUMP / SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES / FUEL FILTER/ IGNITION COIL / TPS SENSOR / AIR INTAKE IDLE SENSOR / CLEANED AND REPROGRAMMED THE PCM / MADE NEW IGNITION KEY / CLEANED ALL GROUND CONNECTIONS / CHECKED ALTERNATOR / REPLACED BATTERY / DRAINED GAS TANK AND ADDED FUEL CLEANER / AFTER ALL OF THIS EXPENSE I STILL AM HAVING THE EXACT SAME ISSUES ?????? DRIVING DOWN ROAD CITY STREET (25 MPH SPEED LIMIT) ON WAY HOME. NOT RAINING OUTSIDE. TEMPERATURE WAS ABOUT 85 DEGREES. VERY HIGH HUMIDITY. AS APPROACHED INTERSECTION THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SHUT ITSELF OFF. COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER, POWER STEERING, AND POWER BREAKING. WIFE HAD TROUBLE PULLING OVER, BUT BECAUSE WERE ONLY GOING 20 MPH AT THAT POINT, WE MANAGED TO PULL OVER AND STOP CAR. WE WERE ONLY 2 BLOCKS FROM HOME, SO WE RESTARTED ENGINE (WHICH TURNED ON WITHOUT TROUBLE) AND DROVE HOME SLOWLY (NOW WITH THE CHECK-ENGINE LIGHT ON). DANGEROUS SITUATION, AS IT IS INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER STEERING OR BRAKING. IF WE HAD TAKEN THE INTERSTATE HOME INSTEAD OF THE WAY WE WENT, WE COULD HAVE BEEN DRIVING AT 70 MPH ONTO AN OFF RAMP WHEN IT SHUT OFF. VERY DANGEROUS INDEED. *TR
