When temperature get below freezing car doors will not latch shut and come back open. Car doors work fine when temp are higher. There is a recall already for this NHTSA# 06v383000 Ford# 06545. I have a Ford Case# XXX My car was not included in recall and either should be or needs to be further investigated. I don't want my kids falling out while I go down the highway and I can't wait 45 min for the car to warm up. This had done this all last winter and is doing it again and Ford refuses to do anything. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, OVER THE COURSE OF SEVERAL YEARS, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILED TO OPERATE WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED. OVER TIME, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL BECAME TOTALLY INOPERABLE AND THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO SEE THE SPEED, FUEL LEVEL, OR OTHER GAUGES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO VARNEY FORD (LOCATED AT 237 MOOSEHEAD TRAIL, NEWPORT, ME 04953, (888) 460-7356) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ADDITIONALLY, THE BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN FOR DAYS TO WEEKS AT A TIME. HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT DIELECTRIC GREASE WAS ADDED TO THE WIRE CONNECTORS AND THE VEHICLE OPERATED AS INTENDED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE SEEMED TO BE MORE PREVALENT WHEN THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE WAS BETWEEN 60-68 DEGREES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE THE FIRST FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1200 MILES IN 2007 AND AGAIN BY 2012. *TP

DASH CLUSTER DIED UNEXPECTEDLY WHILE DRIVING. FOUND PROBLEM TO BE SHODDY SOLDER WORK ON THE CIRCUIT BOARD CAUSING MULTIPLE FAILURES IN THE DASH CLUSTER AND FUEL SYSTEM. HAPPENED DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING AT 60 MPH.

WHILE I AM DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, IT FEELS LIKE THE VEHICLE SHUTS OFF. I AM STILL ABLE TO ACCELERATE, STEER AND STOP; HOWEVER, THE LIGHTS, HEATER AND RADIO SHUT OFF AND ALL OF MY GAUGES QUIT WORKING. MY DASHBOARD SAYS "CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM" BUT THE SOURCE OF THE ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN FOUND. I HAVE ALREADY REPLACED THE STARTER (WAS MAKING A CLICKING NOISE AT TIMES), BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES ON DIFFERENT ROAD TYPES AND VARYING SPEEDS.

ALL ENGINE LIGHTS COME ON AT VARIOUS TIMES WITH NO WORKING GAUGES, BUT CAR DRIVES. WITHING PAST YEAR, HAD INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REPLACED 2 TIMES, ALTERNATOR REPLACED TWICE, INJECTOR COILS & SPARK PLUGS, CLEANED/REPLACED, BATTERY REPLACED, THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY & GASKET, . HAD DIAGNOSED AT 2 FORD DEALERS IN DIFFERENT STATES AND NEITHER CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT IS CAUSING ALL THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS TO STAY ON. BOTH DEALERS WERE ADAMENT IT WAS THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, WHICH CLEARLY IT IS NOT SINCE THE ERROR LIGHTS ARE STILL ON. HAVE BEEN TOLD IT COULD BE ELECTRICAL OR RCM, BUT THERE IS NO WAY TO TEST FOR EITHER. DEALER WANTS ME TO FOOT THE (HOURLY / UNION) LABOR RATE WHILE THEY TRY TO FIGURE IT OUT. CURRENTLY CAR IS CURRENTLY WITH LOCAL MECHANIC WHO IS GOING OVER THE CAR TO FIGURE IT OUT. NOTHING HAS BEEN DETERMINED YET.

I AM HAVING THE ISSUES THAT THE INVESTIGATION WITH THE ELECTRIC THROTTLE BODY. THEY HAVE A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM CALLED 12N03 AND IT DIDN'T LAST LONG ENOUGH FOR ME TO GET THE CAR THAT I PURCHASED (THIS YEAR) FIXED. I HAVE 66K MILES ON THE CAR AND THE DEALERSHIPS ARE USING THE 10 YEARS OR 150000 MILES TO MEAN THAT SINCE MY CAR IS OLDER THAN 10 YEARS I DON'T QUALIFY TO GET MY CAR FIXED TO WORKING ORDER. WHEN I USE THE KEY TO START THE CAR, IT DOESN'T ACCELERATE. THE RPMS LURCH LIKE THE CAR IS GOING TO GO SOMEWHERE AND IT DOESN'T AND THE WRENCH LIGHT COMES ON. I GOT THIS CAR 3 WEEKS AGO AND THE DEALERSHIP ISN'T FIXING IT AND THE FORD DEALERSHIPS AREN'T FIXING IT. I HAD NO CONTROL OVER WHETHER THE PREVIOUS OWNER GOT THE MESSAGE TO GET IT FIXED OR NOT OR WHETHER THEY TOOK THE CAR TO GET FIXED. NOW I HAVE A CAR THAT I CANNOT DRIVE AND IF IT DOES "RESET" (BECAUSE TURNING IT OFF AND WAITING A WHILE USED TO KIND OF RESET IT TO WHERE IT WOULD WORK) THERE IS A CHANCE IT WILL TURN OFF ON ME/NO LONGER ACCELERATE.

NO WAY TO TELL WHAT SPEED YOU ARE GOING ON. THIS SEEMED TO HAVE BEEN A REPORTED PROBLEM TO FORD BUT NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. VERY UNSAFE. WILL BE TAKING IT IN TO DEALERSHIP TO ASSES IT.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED TWO SEPARATE TIMES WITHIN ONE MONTH, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. IF I CUT IT OFF AND TURN IT ON IT GOES AWAY. CAR JUMPS (ACCELERATES) DURING DRIVING. IT DOES IT ALL THE TIME NO MATTER WHERE I AM DRIVING. RUN SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC ON STEERING WHEEL AND EVERYTHING COMES BACK OKAY. PURCHASED CAR FOR A FAMILY CAR AND UPSET THAT THIS IS A PERSISTENT PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL.

THE BATTERY AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON & SOMETIMES IT READS CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM. THIS HAPPENS ON LOCAL STREETS AND HIGHWAY DRIVING. I BELIEVE IT COMING FROM THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ITSELF. I HAVE SEEN THIS SAME COMPLAINT FROM MANY OTHERS HAS I RESEARCH THE ISSUE ON THE INTERNET. I'M NOT AWARE OF ANY RECALL, EVEN THOUGH FORD IS WELL AWARE OF THIS SAFETY CONDITION. THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WON'T WORK.. MY REVERSE LIGHT STAY ON AND I CAN'T TELL WHAT THE GAUGES ARE READING SEEING AS THEY WONT WORK. THE ONLY LIGHT THAT ILLUMINATES IS THE AIR BAG LIGHT ON THE PANEL. MY RADIO LIGHTS WORK BUT NOTHING ELSE. I CAN'T TELL WHAT THE SPEED LIMIT IS NOTHING. HOW CAN ONE DRIVE A CAR WITH THE REVERSE LIGHTS CONSTANTLY ON AND NO DASH LIGHTS? THIS IS A FAMILY CAR I'V ONLY HAD IT A YEAR WITH ABOUT 73,000 MILES ON IT. I JUST SPENT 4,000 TO HAVE MY ENGINE FIXED 4 MONTHS AGO! HOW CAN THIS CAR BE SAFE? THIS HAS HAPPENED IN WARM WEATHER (WE LIVE IN UTAH) AND COLD. IT DOESN'T SEEM TO HAPPEN IN ONLY ONE TEMPERATURE AND HAPPENS FREQUENTLY. WE ALSO EXPERIENCE ISSUES WITH THE INTERIOR PANEL LIGHTS NOT WORKING, AS WELL AS, ON OCCASION THE EXTERIOR BRIGHTS DO NOT WORK. THIS HAPPENED TO ME DURING A RAIN STORM AND WAS EXTREMELY INCONVENIENT. ANOTHER RECENT ISSUE THAT HAS POPPED UP IS THE AWD MALFUNCTION LIGHT APPEARING WHEN NOTHING SEEMS TO BE WRONG. I HAD THE CAR IN PARK, AND WHEN I PUT IT IN REVERSE TO PULL INTO TRAFFIC, THE LIGHT APPEARED. I WAS NOT GOING OVER 40 MPH AND IT IS AUGUST IN UTAH (NOT RAINY, SNOWY OR ANY KIND OF ELEMENTS THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE TO DRIVE IN).

WE HAD THE THROTTLE BODY CLEANED , HELPED FOR A LITTLE WHILE.PROBLEMS WITH THE AIR CONDITIONING HAD COMPRESSOR REPLACED, THEN STARTING HAVING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS (FAILURE SAFE MODE ENGINE WOULD SHUT DOWN) WHILE DRIVING . HAD ALTERNATOR REPLACED BECAUSE ALL ELECTRICAL STARTING SHUTTING DOWN AND TURNING OFF WHILE DRIVING ALSO TRANSMISSON WAS TRYING TO GO IN REVERSE WHILE DRIVING REVERSE LIGHTS WOULD COME ON VERY DANGEROUS. REPLACED BODY COMPUTER STILL DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM TO AFRAID TO DRIVE IT . WHILE DRIVING THE WRENCH LIGHT AND ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. LOST ALL POWER TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, REFUSED TO GO ABOVE 2K ROMA. TURNED CAR OFF AND LET IT SIT FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES. TURNED IT BACK IN AND LIGHTS WERE STILL ON AND CAR WOULDN'T ACCELERATE. REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY AND THE ACCELERATOR POSITION SENSOR. STILL GIVING THE SAME CODES AND WON'T ALLOW ME TO CLEAR THE CODES. PREVIOUS ISSUES WITH UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION IN THE PAST. NOW THE BATTERY WON'T HOLD A CHARGE, THE LIGHTS ARE COMING ON WHEN THEY ARE ALL TURNED OFF AND IT SEEMS THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM I'D GOING CRAZY. IT'S NOW FEBRUARY AND I'M BEING TOLD THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. SINCE MY THROTTLE BODY HAD THE COLD WEATHER SYSTEM ON IT THAT MEANS ANOTHER THROTTLE BODY REPLACEMENT WITH NO GUARANTEE IT WILL FIX THE ISSUE. I CAN'T DRIVE THE CAR AT ALL. OWN A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE, V6, 3.0, ALL WHEEL DRIVE, LIMITED EDITION. I STARTED HEARING LOUD GRINDING AND KNOCKING NOISES FROM THE CVT TRANSMISSION. THE VEHICLE WILL START, AND THE RPMS WILL INCREASE AND DECREASE UNCONTROLLABLY. THIS IS THE REASON THE CVT TRANSMISSION IN THESE VEHICLES ARE GOING BAD, MALFUNCTIONING, AND BREAKING CONTINUOUSLY. THE RPMS ARE DELAYED IN THE DECREASING RPMS PROCESS, WHICH TELLS THE COMPUTER TO SHIFT PREMATURELY, OR TO QUICKLY, CAUSING ANY INTERNAL PARTS AND EXTERNAL PARTS TO BE DAMAGED. THESE VEHICLES ARE EQUIPPED WITH A COMPUTERIZED THROTTLE POSITIONING SENSOR THAT IS ATTACHED TO THE ACTUAL THROTTLE BODY. THE COMPUTER IS SENDING IMPROPER COMMANDS TO THE THROTTLING POSITION SENSOR, RPMS, SHIFTING DELAY AND SYNCHRONIZED SHIFTING SENSORS. THIS IS PUTTING TOO MUCH OF A LOAD ON THE GEARS, BEARINGS, CLUTCHES, AND OTHER PARTS PERTAINING TO THE FUNCTIONING OF THE CVT TRANSMISSION SHIFTING AND EVERYDAY USE. I TOOK MY CAR IN TO BE SERVICED FOR MAINTENANCE (POWER STEERING SERVICE AND TRANSMISSION SERVICE) TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP IN THOMASVILLE, GA. AFTER A FEW DAYS MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE STARTED TO DISPLAY TRANSMISSION DATA ERROR, CHECK TRACK CONTROL, AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS. I CALLED THE COMPANY AND WAS ADVISED TO BRING IT IN AND I DID. THE ALERTS WERE NOT ON AT THE TIME BUT THE SERVICE MAN JERRY AND JOSH TOLD ME THEY WOULD CHECK MY VEHICLE AND LET ME KNOW WHAT - IF ANYTHING WAS WRONG. THEY KEPT IT ALL DAY AND WHEN I RETURNED TO PICK IT UP I WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS FINE AND THEY RE-SERVICED MY TRANSMISSION. ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER MY CAR STARTED THE SAME THING ALL OVER AGAIN WHILE IN TRAFFIC IT SEEMED NOT TO WANT TO PULL OFF NORMALLY WITH ALL THESE ALERTS LIGHTING UP AFTER CHURCH ONE SUNDAY. I CALLED FORD OF COURSE THEY WERE CLOSED BUT THE NEXT DAY WAS MONDAY I CALLED AND WAS ASKED TO BRING THE CAR BACK IN. I HAVE MORE THAN ONE COMPLAINT. 1) SHORTLY AFTER BUYING MY USED 2005 FREESTYLE I WOULD BE DRIVING BOTH AT HIGHER AND LOWER SPEEDS AND I WOULD LOOSE ALL CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. IT WOULD NOT RESPOND TO GAS OR STEERING. IT WAS LIKE IT WAS LOSING POWER BUT IT WAS STILL RUNNING. I HAD SEVERAL NEAR MISSES WHEN THIS WOULD HAPPEN. I WAS LUCKY THAT WHEN I BOUGHT MY FREESTYLE IT WAS "CERTIFIED" AND UNDER WARRANTY, OTHERWISE THE REPAIRS WOULD HAVE COST ME OVER $1200. MY FORD DEALER REPLACED THE KIND OF SENSOR/BRAIN AS THEY CALLED IT. HAS BEEN WORKING SENSE. 2) AIR COMPRESSOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED NOW. I THOUGHT THE A/C WASN'T BLOWING COLD ENOUGH, I FINALLY TOLD IT TO A REPAIR SHOP I TRUST AND HE SAID HE COULDN'T UNDERSTAND I HAD ANY COOL AIR AT ALL. 3) BRAKES, REAR MOST OF ALL, HAVE BEEN REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WITH MY WIFE AT A SPEED OF 55MPH THE MOTOR SUDDENLY DIES AND THE WRENCH SYMBOL APPEARS. I TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR BY TURNING THE KEY - DIDN'T WORK. I WENT TO VALVOLINE TO HAVE THE FUEL SYSTEM CLEANED AND THE CODES TAKEN OUT, NO PROBLEMS SINCE THEN. BUT I'VE NOTICED THAT THE CAR IS VERY SLUGGISH WHEN I ACCELERATE AND THEN SUDDENLY LUNGES. 2005 FORD FREESTYLE UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATES WHEN CAR IS PUT INTO GEAR (FORWARD OR REVERSE), THIS SEEMS TO BE ALIGNED WITH OTHER COMPLAINTS ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA INVESTIGATION PE11018. THE ENGINE WILL REV WHEN PUTTING THE CAR INTO GEAR AND WILL LURCH IN THE DIRECTION OF THE GEAR THAT IT WAS PLACED IN. THIS IS NOT DUE TO THE DRIVER INADVERTENTLY PRESSING ON THE GAS PEDAL AT THE SAME TIME AS THE BRAKE. THE DRIVER HAS TO FIRMLY PRESS ON THE BRAKES TO PREVENT THE CAR FROM MOVING. IF THE BRAKE IS ONLY PRESSED JUST ENOUGH TO PUT THE CAR IN GEAR THE VEHICLE WILL ACTUALLY MOVE 3-4 FEET. THE HAPPENS SPORADICALLY BUT DOES OCCUR AT LEAST 4-5 TIMES A WEEK.

OUR FREESTYLE HAS EXPERIENCED MILD BUT WORSENING UNINTENDED ACCELERATION FOR TWO YEARS NOW, BUT IT WAS ALWAYS "MILD" AND DID NOT CAUSE THE CAR TO LURCH FORWARD EVEN WHEN THE DRIVER'S FOOT WAS HARD ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THEN WE HAD A NEW PROBLEM: NO COLD AIR FROM THE AC AT IDLE. WE RESPONDED (6/11) TO A MAILED PROMOTION FROM HERTRICH FORD (EASTON MD) FOR AN AC "TUNE UP." THEY DID NOTHING BUT ADD DYE TO OUR REFRIGERANT AND "CLEAN" OUR AIR DUCTS WITH DISINFECTANT. SO WE TURNED TO THE OWNERS' FORUM, MYFORDFREESTYLE.COM, AND QUICKLY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM: A SEIZED-UP PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE. APPARENTLY FORD DEALERS REFUSE TO PERFORM THIS SIMPLE REPAIR (PART COST $40) AND WILL ONLY REPLACE THE ENTIRE AC COMPRESSOR ($800 + LABOR). SO WE ORDERED THE VALVE ONLINE AND HAD A COMPETENT LOCAL MECHANIC REPLACE THE VALVE (1-HOUR LABOR PLUS COST OF REFRIGERANT). THE AC IS "GOOD AS NEW", BUT THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION IS NOW MUCH WORSE. THE INCIDENTS ALWAYS OCCUR AT VERY LOW TO NO SPEED AND WHEN MANEUVERING THE CAR (I.E. PARKING, K-TURNING, ETC.). IN ALL OF THESE SITUATIONS, BOTH THE AC AND THE POWER STEERING PUMP ARE DEMANDING/DRAWING NEAR-MAXIMUM POWER FROM AN ESSENTIALLY IDLING ENGINE, NEARLY STALLING THE ENGINE; THE ELECTRONIC ENGINE/IDLE CONTROL THEN KICKS-IN AND HUGELY "OVER-REACTS" BY REVVING THE ENGINE TO 2,000+ RPM. EVEN WITH YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE, AN AUTOMATIC IN DRIVE IS GOING TO SURGE QUITE FAR AT 2000+ RPM. AT THAT POINT, I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY CHARGED ME OVER $600 TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY ON THE CAR. THIS DID RESOLVE THE ISSUE SOMEWHAT, BUT AT LEAST A COUPLE OF TIMES A MONTH I STILL EXPERIENCE THIS LUNGING OF THE CAR, BUT IT IS NOT AS DRAMATIC AS IT WAS BEFORE THEY REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY. I WAS REALLY WORRIED ABOUT THIS ISSUE AS WE HAVE A LOT OF KIDS THAT LIKE TO PLAY AROUND OUR HOUSE AND I WAS ALWAYS WORRIED I WAS GOING TO RUN INTO ONE OF THEM WHEN BACKING OUT OF THE GARAGE SO I HAD TO MAKE SURE I KEPT ONE FOOT ON THE BREAK JUST IN CASE. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE AND IT IS SOMETHING THAT IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY HAZARD TO THE PUBLIC. OVER A PERIOD OF ABOUT 2 SUMMERS, THE 2005 FORD FREESTYLE WOULD SURGE WHILE SITTING AT AN INTERSECTION OR SLOWING DURING THE APPROACH. A QUICK RESPONSE WAS REQUIRED TO AVOID A REAR-END COLLISION, ENTERING AN INTERSECTION, OR STRIKING A PEDESTRIAN. THE SURGES SEEM TO BE RELATED TO THE OPERATION OF THE AIR CONDITIONER. THE CAR HAD GONE INTO A "FAIL-SAFE" MODE WHILE SITTING IN A DRIVE-THRU. I BEGAN USING THE AC SPARINGLY AND WOULD TURN OFF THE AC COMPLETELY WHEN DRIVING IN THE CITY OR APPROACHING AND INTERSECTION. HOWEVER, WHILE APPROACHING A TURN ON A STATE ROUTE, WITH A SPEED LIMIT OF 55, THE VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY SHUTDOWN LEAVING THE VEHICLE EXPOSED TO ON-COMING TRAFFIC. THE DATE LISTED BELOW IS AN APPROXIMATION. AROUND THE SAME TIME TOYOTA WAS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH "RUN-AWAY" VEHICLES, I CONTACTED THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY ALERTING THEM OF THIS HAZARD. I WAS TOLD TO CONTACT A DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY. I WAS TOLD THAT THE "COMPUTER" COULD NOT/DID NOT SHOW ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THE "FAIL-SAFE". WHEN DRIVING MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE DOWN THE ROAD THE ENTIRE CLUSTER WILL START CUTTING OUT ALL THE LIGHTS WILL COME ON. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED I WAS DRIVING 30 MILE PER HOUR. I PULLED OVER AND SHUT OFF MY VEHICLE, A FEW SECONDS LATER I RESTARTED MY VEHICLE THE LIGHTS STILL CAME ON THEY STAYED ON FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES AND THEN STAYED OFF FOR ABOUT A 9 DAYS. THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED THEY STAYED ON FOR 4 DAYS. I CALLED OUR NEAREST FORD DEALERSHIP THE SAME DAY THEY CAME ON AND WAS TOLD IT COULD BE THE BATTERY CAUSING IT OR COULD BE THE CLUSTER CUTTING OUT. WE CHECKED AND CLEANED OUR BATTERY WHICH IS ONLY 9 MONTHS OLD. IT WAS NOT THE BATTERY. THEN ON THE 4TH DAY ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS IN THE CLUSTER WENT OFF EXCEPT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. AFTER A DAY OR SO IT TO WENT OUT. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH THIS THE SPEEDOMETER DOES NOT WORK WHEN THIS OCCURS. ...I FEEL THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS, ESPECIALLY ON THE CURVY AND WINDING ROADS WHERE I LIVE. WE BOUGHT A NEW 2005 FORD FREESTYLE IN OCTOBER 2005. WE HAD NO PROBLEMS UNTIL OUR 3 YEAR WARRANTY EXPIRED IN OCTOBER 2008. BEGINNING IN 2009 WE BEGAN TO NOTICE THAT OUR INSTRUMENT PANEL WOULD LOSE POWER. ALL DIALS WOULD GO DOWN TO ZERO, FLICKER AND THE ENTIRE PANEL WOULD BE DEAD FOR A SHORT TIME. IT HAPPENED INTERMITTENTLY AND WE LIVED WITH IT FOR A YEAR BEFORE TAKING THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE SAN LEANDRO, CA FORD DEALER, PAYING $250 FOR AN ENGINE DIAGNOSTIC IN JANUARY 2009. THE DIAGNOSTIC WHICH TOOK ALL DAY, REVEALED THAT THERE WAS A SHORT IN A WIRE IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WHICH MEANT THE PANEL WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED IN ITS ENTIRETY ($700). NOT HAVING THE $700 TO PAY FOR THE SOLUTION I CAME HOME TO DO SOME RESEARCH. I FOUND THAT PER FORD TSB 06-17-9 ALL FORD DEALERSHIPS WERE TOLD ABOUT THIS DEFECT. IT WAS INVESTIGATED BY THE NHTSA AND BECAUSE THE PROBLEM DID NOT INVOLVE THE OPERATION OF THE EXTERIOR FUNCTIONS OF THE VEHICLE, THERE WAS NO RECALL. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY FORD MC IS TAKING $250 FROM ITS CUSTOMERS TO DIAGNOSE A PROBLEM THAT IT ALREADY KNEW ABOUT. ALSO, IF IT WERE YOUR VEHICLE, WOULD YOU BE SATISFIED IN PAYING $700 FOR A REPLACEMENT PART THAT FORD READILY ADMITS TO HAVING BEEN SOLDERED INCORRECTLY DURING THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS? I CAN TESTIFY THAT THERE IS A SAFETY ISSUE INVOLVED HERE. SO I DROVE IT VERY CAREFULLY STRAIGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT. AT MOST I WAS GOING ABOUT 30-35 MILES PER HOUR. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THE PROBLEM IS THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I OWN A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE WITH 33,200 MILES ON IT. I BOUGHT IT NEW. IN LATE MARCH 2010, THE NEEDLES ON THE GAUGES STARTED SWEEPING DOWN TO ZERO AND THE CAR LOST POWER. THEN THE CAR REGAINED POWER AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED 4 TIMES IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS. THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED I WAS DRIVING DOWN I-85 AT 55 MPH WITH TRACTOR TRAILER TRUCKS DIRECTLY IN BACK OF ME AND ALSO ALONG SIDE OF ME. THE GAUGES SWEPT AND THE CAR LOST POWER BUT THE POWER DID NOT COME BACK AND I WAS BARELY ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT HAD TO BE TOWED IN FOR SERVICE. OF COURSE, FORD SAID IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER MY WARRANTY AND I WOULD HAVE TO PAY TO REPAIR 'CLUSTER' FAILURE. THIS WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AS I HAD MY 3 YR OLD GRANDDAUGHTER IN A CAR SEAT IN THE REAR PASSENGER POSITION. IF I HAD NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET THE CAR OFF THE HIGHWAY, THE PROBABILITY OF BEING REAR ENDED BY ANOTHER VEHICLE WAS HIGH. THAT STRETCH OF I-85 IS HIGHLY TRAVELED BY COMMERCIAL VEHICLES. TRACTOR TRAILER'S CANNOT STOP QUICKLY. MY GRANDDAUGHTER COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND LEARNED THAT NHTSA DEFECT INVESTIGATION PEO7058 HAS NOT RESULTED IN A RECALL OF THE 2005 FREESTYLE. WE OWN A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. OVER THE LAST 4-5 MONTHS WE HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THE INSTRUMENTATION PANEL "GOING BLACK". THIS HAS CAUSED THE VEHICLES REVERSE LIGHTS TO COME ON AND STAY ON. IT WAS HAPPENING ABOUT ONCE EVERY FEW WEEKS AND HAS INCREASED TO A WEEKLY ISSUE. WE HAVE TO UNHOOK AND REHOOK THE BATTERY TO TEMPORILY FIX THE PROBLEM EACH TIME. A MECHANIC INDICATED IT IS AN ISSUE WITH THE ELECTRONIC CLUSTER CONTROLLING THE INSTRUMENTATION PANEL. UPON SEARCHING MULTIPLE SITES THIS SEEMS TO BE THE MOST FREQUENT NON-RECALL ISSUE FOR THIS YEAR/MAKE/MODEL CAR. WHEN IT HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE INSTRUMENTATION GOES CRAZY, THE CAR BUCKS, AND THE REVERSE LIGHTS COME ON. THE DASHBOARD INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILS REGULARLY AND ALL GAUGES (SPEED, GAS, TEMP, ETC.) FALL TO ZERO. THE DASHBOARD AND OTHER INTERIOR LIGHTS ALSO DO NOT WORK WHEN THIS HAPPENS. THIS LASTS FOR A FEW SECONDS, AND WHEN THE LIGHTS COME BACK ON, ALL OF THE GAUGES BOTTOM OUT FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THEN COME BACK ON. WHILE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, WE DISCOVERED THAT THERE IS A COMMON DEFECT IN THE GAUGE CLUSTER AND AN ONLINE SEARCH REVEALS HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS. THERE IS AN OPEN INVESTIGATION, BUT NO RECALL TO DATE. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD DESPITE WHAT FORD SAYS, NOT KNOWING HOW FAST YOU ARE GOING (EVEN IF IT IS JUST FOR A FEW SECONDS) IS DANGEROUS, BUT THE WORST PART IS THE DISTRACTION WHEN YOU SEE YOUR GAUGES GOING CRAZY OUT OF THE CORNER OF YOUR EYE. THE PROBLEM IS A COLD SOLDER JOINT ON THE "CRYSTAL" LOCATED NEXT TO THE FOUR SIDED PROCESSOR CHIP ON THE PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD. THEY HAVE CHANGED THE SENDING UNIT AND THEN THE FUEL GAUGE STARTED FREAKING OUT- SHOWING HALF A TAKE WHEN FULL AND GOING UP INSTEAD OF DOWN AFTER DRIVING IT. IT HAS HAD THE SOFTWARE REDOWNLOADED IN THE COMPUTER AND I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT ALL. IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP WELL OVER 30 DAYS AND IS IN THERE AGAIN FOR THE SAME ISSUE. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. ON MARCH 30, 2008, WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, ALL THE INSTRUMENT PANEL GAUGES DROPPED TO ZERO. APPROXIMATELY 1/3 OF A MILE LATER, THE FAILURE RECURRED, BUT THE GAUGES RETURNED BACK TO NORMAL. THE FAILURE RECURRED FOR THE THIRD TIME A SHORT WHILE LATER AND THE WRENCH LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HAVE THE OIL CHECKED AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NO ERROR CODE. APPROXIMATELY THREE DAYS LATER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE SERVICE CENTER, BUT THEY FOUND NO FAILURES. ON APRIL 9, 2008, THE FAILURE RECURRED FOR THE FIFTH TIME AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO JERK. AFTERWARDS, EVERY RED WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE MILEAGE DIAL BEGAN MOVING SPORADICALLY. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY COULD STILL NOT FIND ANY FAILURES. THEY FINALLY CONCLUDED THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER. THE VIN, PURCHASE DATE, ENGINE SIZE, NUMBER OF CYLINDERS, AND POWERTRAIN WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 67,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 66,000.

3/28/2007 WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY AT 65 THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR COMPLETELY LOST POWER, I HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER. I OWN A FORD FREESTYLE. SINCE THE FIRST DAYS I DROVE IT, I CANNOT SEE THE INFORMATION LIGHTED PANELS ON THE DASH WHEN OUTSIDE LIGHT IS NORMAL BRIGHTNESS. THESE LIGHTED LETTER PANELS SHOULD BE MADE BRIGHT ENOUGH TO READ AT A GLANCE, SO THAT YOU DO NOT NEED TO TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE ROAD FOR LONG WHEN YOU NEED THE INFORMATION. OTHER CARS, IN THE PAST, AND NOW HAVE PANELS THAT CAN BE READ EASILY ENOUGH. I BELIEVE ACCIDENTS ARE BEING CAUSED BY PEOPLE STUDYING THESE DIM PANELS AND NOT WATCHING THE ROAD AT A CRITICAL TIME. I HAVE PLACED A SEPARATE COMPASS ON THE DASH TO HELP MYSELF, FOR EXAMPLE, SO THAT I DON'T HAVE TO TRY TO SEE THE LIGHTED COMPASS. FORD MADE CARS IN YEARS PAST THAT HAD READABLE PANELS. MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE WAS PURCHASED USED, UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY IN MAY OF 2006. SINCE THAT TIME IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP EIGHT TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. IT STARTED RIGHT AFTER THE PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER THE CAR HAD BEEN PARKED AND THE ENGINE TURNED OFF, WHEN TRYING TO RESTART THE VEHICLE IT WOULD CLICK WHEN THE KEY WAS TURNED BUT NOT START. IT WOULD TAKE TWO OR THREE TRIES TO GET THE CAR TO START. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. THEN AFTER THE CAR WOULD NOT START ON THE FIRST TRY, WHEN IT DID START THE OIL LIGHT WAS ON, THE PARKING BRAKE LIGHT WAS ON, THE BACK-UP LIGHTS WERE ON WHEN THE CAR WAS IN DRIVE, THE LEFT BLINKER LIGHT WAS ON AND COULD NOT BE TURNED OFF, THE AIR CONDITIONER WOULD NOT WORK AND ONCE THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF THE BATTERY WOULD DRAIN AND THE CAR WOULD NOT START. THE DEALERSHIP WITNESSED THE PROBLEM ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, HAD SOMEONE FROM CORPORATE COME DOWN TO WORK ON THE CAR AND IT SEEMED FINE FOR ABOUT TWO MONTHS. THEN ON CHRISTMAS MORNING WE STARTED THE CAR AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED. IT WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY REPLACED THE BATTERY BUT WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. ALSO, WHILE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD WITHOUT WARNING WHILE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. FINALLY, EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE HAS A CONTINUOUS TRANSMISSION, THERE WAS STILL A MODERATE SHIFT SHOCK BETWEEN GEARS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER, WHERE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEMS WERE UNABLE TO BE DETERMINED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO NOTIFIED.

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WAS MODIFIED TO ALLOW THE DRIVER TO BE SEATED IN A WHEEL CHAIR. SHORTLY AFTER THE MODIFICATION A PROBLEM BEGAN WHILE ATTEMPTING TO OPEN THE DOOR TO LOWER THE RAMP. THE DOOR DOES NOT OPEN AUTOMATICALLY TO ENGAGE THE RAMP FOR EXIT OR ENTRY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER WERE THE MOTHER BOARD WAS REPLACED. THE REPLACEMENT OF THE PART DID NOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE LOCAL DEALER WHERE THE KEYLESS ENTRY REMOTES WERE REPLACED. THE REPLACEMENT OF THE REMOTES DID NOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE ORIGINAL MODIFICATION DEALER WERE IT WAS INSPECTED AND WAS DETERMINED THE REMOTES WERE OBSTRUCTED BY A FOREIGN BODY WHICH WAS REMOVED. THIS DID NOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MOBILITY DEALER WHO DETERMINED THE ENTIRE FLOORING MATERIALS NEEDED TO BE REMOVED IN ORDER TO SECURE THE LOCK DOWN FOR THE FRONT SEAT WHEEL CHAIR. THIS PROCEDURE WAS COMPLETED TO REMEDY A SECOND PROBLEM THE CONTACT WAS UNAWARE EXISTED. ADDITIONALLY, THE INDEPENDENT MOBILITY DEALER RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE MOTHER BOARD BECAUSE OF UNPREDICTABILITY. THE DEALER DETERMINED THE ORIGINAL AND REPLACEMENT BOARDS WERE NOT THE APPROPRIATE APPLICATION FOR USE IN THE CONVERSION. THE DEALER RECOMMENDED THE USE OF A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BRAND OF MOTHER BOARD. THE DEALER ORDERED THE NEW MOTHER BOARD AND IS AWAITING SHIPMENT. CURRENTLY THE ONLY WAY THE DOOR AND RAMP CAN BE USED IS BY SOMEONE MANUALLY OPENING THE DOOR AND PULLING OUT THE RAMP. THIS PROCESS RENDERS THE VEHICLE IMPOSSIBLE TO USE BY THE CONTACT ALONE.

AFTER LEAVING THE RED LIGHT IT HAPPENED THREE MORE TIMES IN A SPAN OF TWO MILES. THIS HAPPENED SEVEN TIMES TO CONSUMER, AND ONCE FOR THE DEALER. IT HAS BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOUR TIMES FOR REPAIRS. THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM ONLY ONCE, AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO TELL WHAT WAS THE CAUSE THE PROBLEM. THEREFORE, THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER SAID IT MIGHT BE A PROBLEM WITH THE COMPUTER IN THE CAR. THE DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE MANUFACTURE , AND THEY WERE UNSURE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS.
