THE DASH BOARD INFO READS SAFE MODE (ENGINE FAILURE) THE LITE AND A WRENCH APPEAR ON THE DATA ON THE DASH. THE VEHICLE MOTOR STILL ON GOES DOWN TO 1 TO 3 MPH WHILE DRIVING, ON STREET OR FREEWAY, THE CAR HAVE TO BE SHUT OFF AND RESTARTED AND PROCEEDS TO RUN FOR AWHILE AND DOES THE SAME THING AND NO ONE CAN SEEM TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS.IT HAVE BEEN WORKED ON BY LICENSE MECHANICS SEVERAL TIMES AND THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE.. IN 2010, MY CAR WOULD GO INTO "ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE" AND I WOULD HAVE TO SHUT IT OFF AND RESTART IT. AFTER A FEW TIMES, IS STARTED LURCHING FORWARD WHEN IT WAS IDLING. AT THAT TIME, I HAD AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AND THE THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED. TODAY, APRIL 10, 2013, I WAS DRIVING TO WORK AND THE "ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE" KICKED ON TWICE AND THE SECOND TIME, THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT WENT ON AND STAYED ON. I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT SAFELY TO WORK AND DECIDED TO TAKE IT TO A SHOP ACROSS THE STREET FROM MY OFFICE TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC RUN. IT COST $75 AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED! I CALLED FORD AND WAS TOLD THAT ALL THAT THEY CAN DO IS CLEAN AND RESET THE COMPUTER UNDER A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION RECALL. I PLAN TO DROP IT OFF TODAY AT A DEALERSHIP ON MY WAY HOME. UNFORTUNATELY, THE CAR NOW HAS OVER 109,000 MILES AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT I REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY IN 2010 AND IT IS MALFUNCTIONING AGAIN. I WAS TOLD BY FORD THAT IF THIS DOESN'T WORK, IT WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS CAR AND I WANT TO SEE IF THERE IS ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS IS FIXED CORRECTLY AND THE COST IS TAKEN ON BY FORD FOR THE FAULTY PART! *TR

I'VE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE NUMEROUS TIMES OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS. I FILED A COMPLAINT ON HERE ONCE BUT DO NOT REMEMBER THE DATES OR THE USERNAME/PASSWORD I USED. THIS VEHICLE IS THE WORST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED. I'VE SUNK THOUSANDS INTO REPAIRS IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. I'VE HAD INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REPLACED 4 TIMES, REPLACED ENGINE MOUNTS, MY A/C COMPRESSOR WENT OUT ON IT, THROTTLE BODY REPLACED. AND NOW IT SITS ON BLOCKS WE THOUGHT WAS THE FUEL PUMP WENT OUT SO REPLACED IT. DIDN'T DO ANY GOOD. NOT SURE WHAT IT IS THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER STILL DOESN'T WORK CORRECTLY, IT WAS SURGING TIL THE DAY THE OTHER DAY WHEN IT JUST WONT GO ANYMORE, IT WILL START AND RUN BUT WON'T GO. I WAS TOLD IT COULD BE NUMEROUS THINGS, THROTTLE BODY AGAIN, INSTRUMENT CLUSTER STILL NOT RIGHT, MIGHT BE MY TRANSMISSION, COULD BE MY PEDAL THROTTLE SENSOR, FUEL SWITCH OUT..........SO WHAT DO I DO NICKEL AND PENNY EVERYTHING I HAVE INTO A LEMON THAT OBVIOUSLY THE NHTSA NOR FORD CARE ABOUT. WHEN AT A STOP, OUR CAR LUNGES WHEN YOU PRESS ON THE GAS PEDAL, FORWARD OR REVERSE. THERE IS A HESITATION AFTER PUSHING ON THE PEDAL THAN IT LEAPS FORWARD OR REVERSE. I WAS TOLD FROM A DEALER THAT IT NEEDED THE THROTTLE BODY CLEANED AND WAS TOLD THE SAME FROM A TRANSMISSION SHOP. THE TRANSMISSION SHOP INFORMED ME OF SOME PROBLEMS FORD WAS HAVING WITH THIS TRANSMISSION. I LOOKED IT UP ON LINE AND SEEN MANY COMPLAINTS. I CLEANED IT AND IT SEEMED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO, IT STARTED THE LUNGING AGAIN. THIS MORNING, THE CAR SHUTTERED AND STOPPED AND SEVERAL LIGHTS ON THE DASH LIT UP, WRENCH, MOTOR. THE CAR WOULDN'T MOVE, IT WOULDN'T EVEN REV UP. IT STRANDED MY WIFE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I CAME TO MEET HER AND HAD IT TOWED TO OUR HOUSE. I CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY AGAIN. WHEN I GOT IN TO TRY IT, ALL THE LIGHTS WERE NO LONGER THERE BUT IT STILL LUNGES. VERY AFRAID TO LET MY WIFE DRIVE IT AGAIN WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF BEING STRANDED.

ABOUT 2 YRS AGO DURING THE BEGINNING OF THE SUMMER I NOTICED THAT MY AIR CONDITION ON MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE WAS NOT COOLING. SITTING STILL YOU WILL THINK YOU HAVE ON THE HEAT. I ALSO NOTICED THAT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE IT MUCH WARMER THAT THAN THE DRIVER SIDE. COOLS OK IN THE MORNINGS WHEN IT IS NOT SO HOT BUT LATER IN THE DAY YOU CAN FORGET ABOUT THE AIR. CAR LUNGES WHEN COMING TO A STOP AND SOMETIMES EVEN AFTER YOU HAVE STOPPED, IT LUNGES FORWARD OR BACK SUCH AS WHEN TRYING TO PARK OR REVERSE FROM PARKING. THE LUNGING STARTS HAPPEN WHEN IT IS HOT OUTSIDE, SUMMER MONTHS, AND ALWAYS IF THE AIR CONDITIONER IS ON. THE LUNGING STARTED OFF SMALL IN THE BEGINNING, NOW ITS AT A POINT THAT IT STALLS MY CAR. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. WHILE AT A STOP WITH THE BRAKES APPLIED, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD SUDDENLY SURGED FORWARD WITHOUT WARNING. THE FOLLOWING DAY, THE CONTACT WAS AT A STOP AND SHIFTED THE VEHICLE INTO REVERSE AND NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD SUDDENLY STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED AND HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 134,000.

SCARY CAR. A COUPLE OF TIMES WHEN CAR IS IDLE/FOOT ON BRAKE THE CAR WOULD SURGE FORWARD ON ITS OWN. THIS IS CREEPY. FIRST TIME HAPPENED WHEN PARKING IN FRONT OF A WALL. LUCKILY, I HAD ENOUGH ROOM TO NOT HIT THE FRONT. I JUST CAME HOME AND ROLLED INTO PARKING SPACE. MY FOOT WAS STILL ON THE BRAKE BUT OUT OF NOWHERE IT JUST WENT BY ITSELF SO MY NATURAL RESPONSE WAS TO BRAKE REALLY HARD. IT SLOWED THE SURGING, BUT DANG IT! IT SCARED THE BEGEZZY OUT OF ME. IF I WASN'T ALERT, I THINK THAT WALL WOULD DAMAGE THE FRONT CAR...LET ALONE HIT SOMEONE(S) IF THEY ARE IN FRONT OF THIS IDLE CAR. SECOND TIME WHEN MY HUSBAND ROLLED INTO THE MALL'S PARKING SPACE AND IT DID IT TOO. I SAT NEXT TO HIM AND IT WAS JUST FREAKY WEIRD. IT HAPPENED 3 OTHER TIMES ALSO. FORD BETTER RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM SEEING HOW MANY COMPLAINTS ARE POSTED ONLINE ALREADY. I HAD TO LOOK IT UP ONLINE AND FOUND A MAJOR CAR MAGAZINE STATED IT WAS A MAJOR PROBLEM. IN 2008 MY FORD FREESTYLE STARTED LUNGING FORWARD AT VERY LOW SPEEDS WHEN IN GEAR WITHOUT EITHER THE BRAKE OR ACCELERATOR PEDAL APPLIED. IF I APPLIED THE BRAKES, IT STOPPED THE CAR RIGHT AWAY, BUT IF I WAS SITTING WITH THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE OR REVERSE AND DIDN'T HAVE MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE VEHICLE WOULD SUDDENLY LUNGE - AND THE ONLY WAY TO STOP IT WAS TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES. I AM JUST LUCKILY WE NEVER HIT ANYONE. IT SEEMED TO HAPPEN AFTER IT RAINED. A LOCAL (NON FORD) MECHANIC STATED THAT HE BELIEVED THE ECM WAS GETTING WET AND CORROSION WAS CAUSING THIS PROBLEM. AFTER HE ADDRESSED THE PROBLEM (HE CLEANED AND TIGHTENED PINS, SEALED WITH TERMINAL SEALER/CORROSION INHIBITOR), THE PROBLEM COMPLETELY STOPPED. NOW, 4 YEARS LATER, IT'S DOING IT AGAIN. BUT THAT MECHANIC IS NO LONGER IN BUSINESS AND I AM WORRIED THAT THIS IS A CHRONIC (AND SCARY) PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. THIS MORNING MY VEHICLE LUNGED SUDDENLY BACKWARDS OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, RIGHT INTO THE SIDEWALK WHERE CHILDREN WERE PASSING. I HAD STOPPED MY CAR, LET UP THE BRAKE AND IT LUNGED. I HAVE A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL LUNGING INCIDENTS WHERE THE CAR FEELS LIKE IT WANTS TO LUNG FORWARD OR BACKWARD WHEN BACKING OUT A PARKING SPACE ETC.. THE FIRST TIME I REPORTED THIS INCIDENT WAS ON 08/25/09. THE NEXT TIME WAS ON 09/22/09. THE DEALER ORDERED A NEW THROTTLE BODY. THERE WERE SO MANY ISSUES WITH THE THROTTLE BODY ON THIS CAR THAT THEY WERE ON BACK ORDER. THE DEALER ALLOWED ME TO DRIVE FOR 5697 MILES BEFORE THE PART ARRIVED. I REQUESTED A RENTAL UNDER WARRANTY AND THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT JUSTIFY A RENTAL. ON 02/08/10 MY NEW THROTTLE BODY WAS INSTALLED. TODAY IS 02/22/2012 AND I AM HAVING THE SAME ISSUE ALL OVER AGAIN. THE FORD FREESTYLE IS BY FAR THE WORST VEHICLE I HAVE EVER OWNED. I AM ON MY SECOND SET OF (REAR) BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. I HAVE HAD THE ENGINE MOUNTS REPLACED. OUR AIR CONDITIONER ONLY WORKS PROPERLY DURING THE WINTER. I HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS PAGES OF FORUMS WITH PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES DEALING WITH THE EXACT SAME ISSUES ON THE EXACT SAME CARS. I HAVE MORE THAN ONE COMPLAINT. 1) SHORTLY AFTER BUYING MY USED 2005 FREESTYLE I WOULD BE DRIVING BOTH AT HIGHER AND LOWER SPEEDS AND I WOULD LOOSE ALL CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. IT WOULD NOT RESPOND TO GAS OR STEERING. IT WAS LIKE IT WAS LOSING POWER BUT IT WAS STILL RUNNING. I HAD SEVERAL NEAR MISSES WHEN THIS WOULD HAPPEN. I WAS LUCKY THAT WHEN I BOUGHT MY FREESTYLE IT WAS "CERTIFIED" AND UNDER WARRANTY, OTHERWISE THE REPAIRS WOULD HAVE COST ME OVER $1200. MY FORD DEALER REPLACED THE KIND OF SENSOR/BRAIN AS THEY CALLED IT. HAS BEEN WORKING SENSE. 2) AIR COMPRESSOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED NOW. I THOUGHT THE A/C WASN'T BLOWING COLD ENOUGH, I FINALLY TOLD IT TO A REPAIR SHOP I TRUST AND HE SAID HE COULDN'T UNDERSTAND I HAD ANY COOL AIR AT ALL. 3) BRAKES, REAR MOST OF ALL, HAVE BEEN REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES. WAY TOO SOON AND ANYTIME IT'S WET THEY SQUEAL LIKE CRAZY. GUESS I NEED TO HAVE THEM CHANGED AGAIN. 4) TRANSMISSION ISSUES ARE STARTING NOW. I ROUGHLY HAVE 90K MILES AND HOPED THIS WOULD BE MY LAST CAR FOR SEVERAL MORE YEARS. WHILE STATIONARY IN MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE IN THE LEFT TURN LANE AT A RED LIGHT, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED MOVING THE CAR FORWARD APPROXIMATELY FIVE FEET INTO THE INTERSECTION BEFORE IT COULD BE STOPPED. AT THE TIME OF THIS OCCURRENCE, MY FOOT WAS ALREADY ON THE BRAKE AND ONLY BY STOMPING HARDER ON THE BRAKES WAS I ABLE TO STOP THE CAR'S FORWARD TRAVEL INTO CROSS TRAFFIC THAT WAS TRAVELING AT OVER 40MPH. THE CAR THEN DIED AND A WARNING CAME UP ON THE INFORMATION DISPLAY ON THE DASH PANEL STATING "ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE". I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION AND TRIED TO START THE CAR AGAIN. THE CAR STARTED, BUT STILL DISPLAYED THE "ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE" WARNING AND WHEN WE WERE ATTEMPTING TO RETURN HOME, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF FIRST GEAR OR ALLOW US TO ACCELERATE OVER 30MPH. PURCHASED USED FORD FREESTYLE DECEMBER 2010. RAN FINE UNTIL WARM WEATHER AND USE OF AIR CONDITIONER. WITH A/C ON, THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL SEEMS TO OFTEN GREATLY OVERSHOOT THE CORRECT SETTING WHEN SHIFTING FROM NEUTRAL TO DRIVE OR REVERSE, WHICH CAUSES A SIGNIFICANT ENGINE RPM INCREASE AND A MOMENTARY "LUNGE" IF THE BRAKE IS NOT APPLIED VERY FIRMLY. MANY VEHICLES DO THIS TO A MINOR EXTENT BUT THE FREESTYLE IS FAR AND AWAY THE WORST I'VE EVER SEEN. THIS DOES CAUSE UNANTICIPATED VEHICLE MOVEMENT AND COULD INJURE A CHILD, PASSERBY ETC OR CAUSE A VEHICLE TO ENTER AN INTERSECTION. MY WIFE IS CERTAINLY UNNERVED BY IT. EFFECT IS IN FACT SOMETIMES THERE IN COOL WEATHER BUT TO A MUCH LESSER EXTENT. READING FORUMS AND THINKING ABOUT THIS (I'M AN ENGINEER AND SAE MEMBER) IT MAY VERY WELL BE SOMETHING LIKE A WORN THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR INTERACTING WITH AN ECU SOFTWARE GLITCH, MAY VERY WELL BE FIXABLE IN SOFTWARE. WE HAVE EXPERIENCED NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH OUR FREESTYLE, AND AT THIS POINT ARE FACED WITH A FAILED THROTTLE BODY, WHICH WILL COST $900 TO REPLACE (DEALER QUOTE). I PURCHASE MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE IN JUNE 2005. JULY 2005 TRAVELING TO GEORGIA BETWEEN 55/60 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND TRANSMISSION ICON APPEARED. FIRST INCIDENT RESULTED IN THE CAR STALLING MULTIPLE TIMES, WHEN STARTED IT WOULD STUTTER, RPMS COULDN'T GET INTO NORMAL RANGE AND WHEN TRYING TO PUT IN GEAR IT WOULD STALL OUT. I TURNED THE CORNER TO ENTER A PARKING GARAGE AND WHILE STOPPED WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD AGAIN, THIS TIME THE CAR STALLED. I RESTARTED IT PULLED FORWARD TO THE GARAGE GATE AND STOPPED. IT LURCHED A THIRD TIME, STALLING AGAIN AND THEN THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I CAN BEST DESCRIBE IT AS THOUGH I RELEASED THE CLUTCH (ON A MANUAL SHIFT CAR) WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND NOT THE ACCELERATOR. IN SUCH A SITUATION, THE CAR WILL LURCH AND STALL. HOWEVER THIS IS AN AUTOMATIC AND THE REASON THE CLUTCH WOULD ENGAGE IS FROM ACCELERATION. I RECALL THE MOTOR REVVING UP PRIOR TO THE LURCH WHICH WOULD EXPLAIN THE EVENT. THE FORD DEALERSHIP FINALLY NARROWED THE PROBLEM TO THE THROTTLE BODY AND THE ELECTRONICS ATTACHED TO IT AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT ($700+). I WOULD SAY THIS EVENT OCCURRED AT LEAST 6 TIMES IN THE PAST YEAR, ALWAYS WHILE THE CAR WAS STOPPED BUT NEVER 3 TIMES IN SUCCESSION. IT STALLED MAYBE TWO OF THOSE TIMES, ENTERED 'ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE' BUT WAS FINE AFTER RE-STARTING THE ENGINE. I RESEARCHED THIS OCCURRENCE ON THE INTERNET FINDING IT TO BE AN ISSUE ON MANY OCCASIONS WITH THIS MODEL VEHICLE. THERE ARE SEVERAL REPORTS ON YOUR WEBSITE AS WELL. I SEE THE INVESTIGATION IS STILL OPEN. I NOTED ONE REPORT REFERENCING A DESIGN FLAW AS TO THE RELEASE OF GASES IN THE THROTTLE BODY AND HOW THEY ARE RE-ROUTED BACK THROUGHOUT THE BODY. THE SERVICE REP AT THE DEALER NOTED TO ME THAT THE NEW BODY INSTALLED ON MY CAR WAS A NEW DESIGN WHERE THE GASES ARE RELEASED AWAY FROM THE BODY. I TAKE THIS AS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT THAT THE ORIGINAL DESIGN WAS FLAWED, LEADING TO ITS UNSAFE BEHAVIOR. WE JUST BOUGHT A USED 2005 FORD FREESTYLE AND THE DEALER WE BOUGHT IT FROM TOLD US THE AWD MALFUNCTION ALERT WOULD COME ON, BUT IT WOULD NOT STAY ON LONG ENOUGH FOR A MECHANIC TO CHECK WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT. WE DID NOTICE THE ALERT COMING ON, BUT ON OUR 4TH DAY OF DRIVING THE VEHICLE, WE WERE PULLING AWAY FROM A DRIVE THRU WINDOW AND PREPARING TO MANEUVER AROUND TWO VEHICLES STOPPED IN FRONT OF US AND I HAD JUST TAKEN MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND NOT EVEN TOUCHED THE GAS PEDAL WHEN THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD. I APPLIED THE BRAKE AND THEN SLOWLY TOOK MY FOOT AWAY AGAIN AND THE CAR LUNGED AND THE ENGINE DIED. THE CAR STILL HAD ENOUGH MOMENTUM AFTER THE ENGINE DIED TO ALLOW ME TO COAST AWAY FROM THE TWO VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME. I TRIED TO START THE CAR AGAIN AND IT LUNGED AND DIED AGAIN. ON THE THIRD TRY, IT STARTED AND I WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE PARKING LOT, BUT I WAS VERY FRIGHTENED. I DID MAKE IT HOME ALRIGHT, BUT THE AWD MALFUNCTION ALERT STAYED ON AND AT TIMES THE ALERT WOULD ALSO READ "FAILSAFE ENGINE MODE". ABOUT A MONTH AGO, I RECEIVED ERROR MESSAGES ON MY DASHBOARD RANGING FROM CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO CRITICAL ENGINE FAILURE. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND HE SAID THERE WERE ALL SORTS OF ERROR CODES THAT NEEDED TO BE CLEARED OUT. HE SAID THIS WAS COMMON AND HAPPENS EVERY 3 TO 4 YEARS. I PAID THE MONEY, HAD THE ERROR MESSAGES / COMPUTER CHIP RESET, AND WENT ON MY WAY. DURING THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS, MY CAR WILL SURGE WHILE I'M TEMPORARILY STOPPED (AT A STOP LIGHT, DRIVE THROUGH WINDOW, ETC), AND THE ENGINE DIES ABOUT 50% OF THE TIME. 2005 FORD FREESTYLE UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATES WHEN CAR IS PUT INTO GEAR (FORWARD OR REVERSE), THIS SEEMS TO BE ALIGNED WITH OTHER COMPLAINTS ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA INVESTIGATION PE11018. THE ENGINE WILL REV WHEN PUTTING THE CAR INTO GEAR AND WILL LURCH IN THE DIRECTION OF THE GEAR THAT IT WAS PLACED IN. THIS IS NOT DUE TO THE DRIVER INADVERTENTLY PRESSING ON THE GAS PEDAL AT THE SAME TIME AS THE BRAKE. THE DRIVER HAS TO FIRMLY PRESS ON THE BRAKES TO PREVENT THE CAR FROM MOVING. IF THE BRAKE IS ONLY PRESSED JUST ENOUGH TO PUT THE CAR IN GEAR THE VEHICLE WILL ACTUALLY MOVE 3-4 FEET. THE HAPPENS SPORADICALLY BUT DOES OCCUR AT LEAST 4-5 TIMES A WEEK.

WHILE SITTING IN A PARKING LOT ON A HOT DAY (A/C RUNNING), MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE SUDDENLY LUNGED FORWARD. WHEN THE BRAKE WAS APPLIED, IT STOPPED THE ENGINE. A MESSAGE APPEARED READING "ENGINE IN FAIL-SAFE MODE." APPROXIMATELY 2 WEEKS LATER, THIS SAME CONDITION WAS REPEATED WITH THE SAME RESULT. IN BETWEEN THESE EVENTS THE CAR SEEMS TO PERFORM AS EXPECTED. AS OF NOW WE HAVE TAKEN NO ACTION HOWEVER NEXT WEDNESDAY THE DEALER CAN LOOK AT THE VEHICLE AND HOPEFULLY HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS ON THE REPAIRS. I HAD THE LOCAL AUTOZONE TECHNICIAN RUN A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK AND TWO CODES CAME UP HE SAID WERE UNIQUE TO FORD SO A FORD SERVICE TECHNICIAN WOULD BE REQUIRED TO INTERPRET. HE LEAD ME TO BELIEVE THESE CODES READ "TAC" AND SOMETHING REFERRING TO THE TORQUE CONTROL MODULE. CODES MAY HAVE BEEN "P061B" AND A P1202" (?). *KB

LAST FRIDAY, IT SURGED VIOLENTLY BACKWARD WHILE I WAS PARALLEL PARKING AND RAN UP ON THE CURB NEARLY HITTING PEOPLE. I STOOD ON THE BRAKE AND THE ENGINE QUIT AND WENT INTO A FAULT MODE. IT DID THIS THREE TIMES AFTER RE-STARTING THE CAR EACH TIME. IT ALSO ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO SURGED FORWARD INTO THE GATE OF MY GATED COMMUNITY. IT IS NOW SURGING AT A THIRD OF MY STOPS. AFTER SITTING IN A RESTAURANT'S PARKING LOT WITH THE ENGINE IDLING AND THE AIR CONDITIONING ON FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES, THE CAR LUNGED BACKWARD SEVERAL FEET WHEN THE CAR WITH PLACED INTO REVERSE. ONCE THE CAR WAS STOPPED, I PLACED THE CAR IN DRIVE AND IT LUNGED FORWARD WITHOUT ME PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL. LUCKILY, THERE ONCE NO ONE AROUND THE CAR WHEN THIS HAPPENED OR THERE COULD HAVE BEEN INJURIES CAUSED BY THE CAR'S ACTIONS. ALSO, THE CAR'S "FAILSAFE ENGINE MODE" AND "WRENCH" LIGHT CAME ON. THIS CAUSED THE CAR'S POWER TO BE MINIMIZED TO A CRAWL. WE WERE ONLY ABLE TO GET THE CAR'S SPEED UP TO AROUND 20 TO 30 MPH. AFTER EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE, I LOOKED ON THE INTERNET TO FIND THAT MANY INDIVIDUALS WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL. IT APPEARS THAT IT IS AN ISSUE WITH THE THROTTLE BODY COMPONENT ON THIS MODEL THAT IS BAD AND CAUSING THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND I WOULD HOPE THAT FORD WOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING THIS PART UNDER A RECALL.

I FIRST NOTICED A SURGE IN THE CAR JUST AS IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE WITH TIME. WHENEVER THE CAR COMES TO A STOP (E.G. IN A PARKING SPOT) THE CAR SURGES IN THE DIRECTION THE TRANSMISSION IS SELECTED. ADDITIONAL BRAKE PRESSURE IS IMMEDIATELY REQUIRED TO KEEP THE VEHICLE FROM MOVING FORWARD. LIKEWISE... WHEN FIRST SELECTING REVERSE FROM A STOPPED POSITION THE VEHICLE SURGES DRASTICALLY WHICH ALSO REQUIRES PROMPT ADDITIONAL BRAKING TO KEEP THE VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL. THE VEHICLE HAS ALWAYS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED BY THE DEALER. THE SURGING MAY BE COMING FROM AN ISSUE WITHIN THE FUNCTION OF THE THROTTLE BODY, BUT NOT 100% SURE OF THAT. THE ADDITION OF FUEL CLEANERS SEEMS TO HELP, BUT ONLY A LITTLE... AND THEN ONLY TEMPORARILY. SYMPTOMS OCCUR YEAR ROUND, BUT SEEM TO BE WORSENED BY HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES. THE VEHICLE IS A THREAT TO SAFETY IN IT'S DESIGN AND SHOULD BE RECALLED.

VEHICLE HAS A SUDDEN JUMP IN ACCELERATION EVEN WHEN DRIVER IS PRESSING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. IT FEELS AS IF BOTH THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR ARE BEING PRESSED AND THE CAR IS IN CONFLICT. THEN THE IDLE SEEMS TO DROP EITHER TO A POINT OF THE VEHICLE DYING OR ALMOST STALLING. WHEN RESTARTED (SOMETIMES THIS TAKES 2-3 TRIES TO KEEP IT RUNNING) OR IDLE EVENS OUT THE RPMS AND ACCELERATION ARE DELAYED FOR SOME TIME. WHILE PRESSING ON THE ACCELERATOR (EVEN PUSHING ALMOST TO THE FLOOR) THE VEHICLE WILL NOT INCREASE IN SPEED (IN A NORMAL RESPONSE TIME-WITHIN 3-4 MILES) AND RPMS TOP OUT AT 2000. THIS HAPPENS AT BOTH LOW SPEEDS AND WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACHIEVE HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE TRIGGER FOR THIS IS TYPICALLY A SHARP TURN. THIS ALSO RESULTS IN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON AND GIVING DIAGNOSTIC CODES OF P061B AND P2106 WHICH I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND A DESCRIPTION OF THESE CODES. THIS HAS HAPPENED ONCE EVERY 4-6 WEEKS TO BEGIN WITH, BUT HAS INCREASED IN FREQUENCY TO 3-4 TIMES A MONTH. I HAVE NOT REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY BUT THAT APPEARS TO BE THE COMMON FIX AS REPORTED BY OTHERS EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM. THEY PUT IT ON THE MACHINE AND SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THEIR SUGGESTION WAS TO TURN OFF AIR OR HEAT!!! NOW AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE ONLINE I FIND OUT THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE. I TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO WAS SUGGESTED TO ME BY OUR LOCAL ADVANCE AUTO STORE. THE MECHANIC WAS VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE FREESTYLE AND THE SAME ISSUE. THE SOLUTION TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS A NEW THROTTLE BODY. AT A COST OF $520.00. I CALLED THE FORD GARAGE IN CLINTON, NC TO SEE IF THEY HAD THE PART SO MY LOCAL MECHANIC COULD FIX IT. NOW THE PARTS EMPLOYEE, BOBBY TOLD ME THE THROTTLE BODY PROBLEM WAS A "HUGE" ISSUE WITH THE FREESTYLE AND THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL. THEN WE HAD A NEW PROBLEM: NO COLD AIR FROM THE AC AT IDLE. WE RESPONDED (6/11) TO A MAILED PROMOTION FROM HERTRICH FORD (EASTON MD) FOR AN AC "TUNE UP." THEY DID NOTHING BUT ADD DYE TO OUR REFRIGERANT AND "CLEAN" OUR AIR DUCTS WITH DISINFECTANT. SO WE TURNED TO THE OWNERS' FORUM, MYFORDFREESTYLE.COM, AND QUICKLY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM: A SEIZED-UP PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE. APPARENTLY FORD DEALERS REFUSE TO PERFORM THIS SIMPLE REPAIR (PART COST $40) AND WILL ONLY REPLACE THE ENTIRE AC COMPRESSOR ($800 + LABOR). SO WE ORDERED THE VALVE ONLINE AND HAD A COMPETENT LOCAL MECHANIC REPLACE THE VALVE (1-HOUR LABOR PLUS COST OF REFRIGERANT). THE AC IS "GOOD AS NEW", BUT THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION IS NOW MUCH WORSE. THE INCIDENTS ALWAYS OCCUR AT VERY LOW TO NO SPEED AND WHEN MANEUVERING THE CAR (I.E. PARKING, K-TURNING, ETC.). IN ALL OF THESE SITUATIONS, BOTH THE AC AND THE POWER STEERING PUMP ARE DEMANDING/DRAWING NEAR-MAXIMUM POWER FROM AN ESSENTIALLY IDLING ENGINE, NEARLY STALLING THE ENGINE; THE ELECTRONIC ENGINE/IDLE CONTROL THEN KICKS-IN AND HUGELY "OVER-REACTS" BY REVVING THE ENGINE TO 2,000+ RPM. EVEN WITH YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE, AN AUTOMATIC IN DRIVE IS GOING TO SURGE QUITE FAR AT 2000+ RPM. THROTTLE BODY REPLACED AFTER CAR DID NOT START - 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. PRIOR TO REPLACEMENT, JERKING/LURCHING OF THE VEHICLE ONCE STARTED AND FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL. HESITATED TO START ON MANY OCCASIONS IF CAR IS PARKED ON AN INCLINE AS IF NO GASOLINE IN VEHICLE. ALSO, ON OCCASIONS, CAR STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET, BUT STARTED UP AFTER SEVERAL TRIES. WITHIN THOSE MONTHS I HAVE HAD THE ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET BREAK AND THE CAR, DURING STOP AND GO DRIVING, WILL RANDOMLY LUNGE FORWARD OR BACKWARD. FOR SEVERAL MONTHS WE HAD NOTICED THAT WHEN WE SHIFTED OUR VEHICLE INTO GEAR (FORWARD OR REVERSE) THE CAR WOULD LURCH FORWARD/BACKWARD AS WE CAME OFF THE BRAKE. SEVERAL WEEKS AGO, MY WIFE HAD THE VEHICLE IN LINE AT MY DAUGHTERS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DRIVEWAY WAITING TO PICK HER UP. AS SHE RELEASED PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE, THE VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY JUMPED FORWARD AND SHE NEEDED TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES TO STOP IT. THE ENGINE THEN WENT INTO "FAILSAFE MODE" AND RAN ON DIMINISHED PERFORMANCE UNTIL SHE WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE HOME. UPON EXAMINATION, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED ON A CAR WITH 65,000 MILES. IT WAS THE FAULTY THROTTLE BODY THAT HAD BEEN CAUSING THE CAR TO UNEXPECTEDLY LURCH/SURGE FORWARD. I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT BECAUSE IT APPEARS THAT IT IS NOT AN ISOLATED ISSUE FOR THE VEHICLE AND IT IS A FAMILY VEHICLE WHICH MEANS THAT THERE ARE MANY OF THEM SITTING IN SCHOOL PARKING LOTS AND PICK UP LANES. IN MY RESEARCH THERE APPEARS TO BE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ISSUED BY FORD REGARDING THIS MATTER AND ALTHOUGH MY CAR HAD BEEN IN FOR IT 60K SERVICE JUST MONTHS BEFORE, THERE WAS NO MENTION OF A PROBLEM WITH THE THROTTLE BODY. THE FORD DEALER WASTED NO TIME TELLING US THAT THE PART IS NOT COVERED UNDER THEIR EXTENDED POWER TRAIN WARRANTY WHICH I HAD ON THE VEHICLE. QUITE HONESTLY, THAT WAS NOT MY MAIN CONCERN AS A CHILD COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN HARMED BY THIS FAULTY THROTTLE BODY AND THE SYMPTOMS IT PRODUCES. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: WE DID HAVE A TERRIBLE PROBLEM WITH OUR 2005 FREESTYLE AND IT WAS IN THE FORD REPAIR SHOP ON AND OFF FOR OVER THREE MONTHS. THE FIRST TIME IT WENT IN WE PAID TO HAVE THE WORK DONE BUT WHEN IT STARTED LINKING AGAIN WE REFUSED TO PAY EVEN THOUGH OUR WARRANTY WAS UP AT THE TIME AND FORD AGREED NOT TO CHARGE US. AFTER CALLING FORD HEADQUARTERS TO COMPLAIN, THE MANAGER OF THE DEALERSHIP INTERVENED AND THEY ALSO GAVE US A LOANER CAR. I FIRST NOTICED A LEAK IN THE BACK (BUT I THINK IT WAS LEAKING MUCH LONGER THAN I REALIZED) AND THEY FIXED THE LEAK IN THE BACK AND THEN IT LEAKED IN THE FRONT. THIS WENT ON FOR SEVERAL WEEKS BUT I MUST TELL YOU THAT THEY DID FINALLY FIX IT. SORRY TO SAY, WE DID HAVE IT BACK LAST SPRING FOR ANOTHER LEAK IN THE FRONT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. HE EXPERIENCED UNINTENDED VEHICLE ACCELERATION WHILE DRIVING IN REVERSE GEAR OR AT A COMPLETE STOP. THE DEALER REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY; HOWEVER, AFTER THE REPAIR WAS MADE THE ENGINE BEGAN TO STALL. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED, AND A TECHNICIAN CONCLUDED THAT THE REPAIR PARTS WERE ON BACK ORDER; THEREFORE, NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 78,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 84,000.

WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PUT IN REVERSE THE CAR WOULD JERK AND ALMOST STALL, THEN WHEN SHIFTED TO DRIVE THE CAR WOULD STALL, WHEN THE CAR WAS SHUT OFF AND THE PUT INTO DRIVE THE CAR RAN ROUGH, I HAD TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER THE FIRST TIME , THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS WATER IN THE BOX, I AM A CERTIFIED MECHANIC, AND I NEVER HEARD OF THIS, I HAD TAKEN THE CAR BACK, TO THE DEALER AND THEY HAD THE CAR FOR TWO WEEKS BEFORE THEY FOUND OUT IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY, THEY DIDN'T HAVE ONE IN STOCK, THEY SEARCHED ACROSS THE COUNTRY , NOT ONE TO BE FOUND , THEY CALLED FORD MOTOR COMPANY , THEY DIDN'T HAVE ONE EITHER, THEY SAID THEY ARE TRYING TO FIND SOMEONE TO MAKE THE PART, , IT IS A DIE CAST PART, THEN IT HAS TO BE MACHINED THEN FITTED WITH THE SENSORS, , WIRE PORTS AND VACUUM SOCKETS HAVE TO BE MACHINED, THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO CALL ME SEPT 30, 09 TO LET ME KNOW THE STATUS, I HAVE A VERY BAD FEELING ABOUT THIS, I CAN ALMOST GUARANTEE THE PART IS NOT GOING TO BE RIGHT, AS OF SEPT 30 09 THEY HAVE HAD MY CAR TWO MONTHS, I THINK THEY ARE GOING TO WAIT UNTIL MY EXTENDED WARRANTY EXPIRES, THEN THE CAR IS GOOD FOR NOTHING BUT A PLANTER IN THE FRONT YARD, I HAVE TERMINAL BRAIN CANCER AND NEED MY CAR TO CARRY MY WHEEL CHAIR AROUND, THE DEALER FIRST GAVE ME A FOCUS, THEN A TAURUS, I STILL CANT LIFT MY WHEEL CHAIR TO LAY IT FLAT IN THE TRUNK, I HAVE ASKED FOR SOMETHING COMPARABLE TO MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE, , WHICH I JUST LIFT MY CHAIR STRAIT UP AND PUT IT IN, BUT WHAT THIS WHOLE PROBLEM HAS CREATED, IS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM, IF THIS PART LETS GO ON THE FREEWAY THE CAR WILL JERK THE WHEELS WILL LOCK UP AND HOPEFULLY THE CAR BEHIND IS WATCHING , OTHERWISE , THIS IS GOING TO BE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. *TR

I BROUGHT THE CAR TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER AND THEY SAID IT'S THE THROTTLE BODY - A PART ON BACK ORDER UNTIL NOV 09 AND COSTS $700 PLUS $300 LABOR ~ AND THEY SENT ME HOME WITH MY CAR!! VERY UNSURE OF DRIVING MY VEHICLE UNTIL THEN WITH MY 2 YOUNG CHILDREN NEVERMIND THE DANGERS TO OTHER PEOPLE. FORD ISSUED A TECHNICAL BULLETIN BACK IN DEC 05 FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE. A SIMPLE GOOGLE SEARCH ON LINE SHOWS THAT THEIR ARE MANY COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS ISSUE. WHY HAS THERE NOT BEEN A RECALL YET. I OWN A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE JUST BOUGHT IT LAST YEAR AND IT HAS BEEN AT BOB BELL FORD FOR OVER A WEEK. I WAS AT THE BEACH AND THE CAR STALLED TWICE AND WENT IN TO A FAIL SAFE MODE. I TOOK IT TO BOB BELL FORD AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY AND THAT IT WAS ON BACK ORDER UNTIL NOVEMBER 2009. I WAS TOLD THAT I COULD COME PICK UP MY CAR AND IF IT BREAKS DOWN THEY WILL COME GET ME. NOT THINKING THAT I COULD BE INVOLVED IN A ACCIDENT IF IT STALLS WELL DRIVING. I HAVE CALLED HEADQUARTERS TO SEE WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO DO FOR ME AS FAR AS A RENTAL AND THEY TOLD ME THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING FOR THAT LENGTH OF TIME. THIS ALL HAS TO DO WITH THE PLANTS BEING SHUT DOWN AND PARTS NO BEING MADE. SOMEONE JUST BOUGHT A NEW GM CAMARO AND HAD TO SIGN A WAIVER STATING THAT IF THE CAR BREAKS DOWN THEY COULD HAVE TO WAIT 6 MONTHS TO A YEAR TO GET PARTS AND THEY ARE STILL RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING THE PAYMENT. THE PART THAT I NEED IS ON NATIONAL BACK ORDER. OTHER PEOPLE WITH THIS SAME CAR ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS PART.
