TRAVELING ON HWY AT APPROX 60 MPH, WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON, "FAILSAFE ENGINE MODE" MESSAGE APPEARED AND CAR POWERED DOWN. PULLED OVER, TURNED CAR OFF, WAITED 1 MIN, RESTARTED CAR. MESSAGE WAS CLEARED AND CAR DROVE AS NORMAL. ABOUT 20 MILES LATER, SAME PROBLEM, EXCEPT CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND MESSAGE APPEARED. PULLED OVER, TURNED OFF CAR, RESTARTED. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND MESSAGE REMAINED. VERY LOW POWER UPON ACCELERATION. PROBLEM CONTINUED INTERMITTENTLY. RECEIVED ENGINE CODE P2111, P2112 RELATING TO THROTTLE BODY PROBLEM. ETB HAD BEEN CLEANED 11/13 BY DEALER PER TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ISSUED BY FORD. NO PROBLEMS UNTIL 12/14. SERVICE PERFORMED TO REPROGRAM ETB, NO CLEANING WAS NEEDED. PROBLEM RECURRED 12/23/14. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AND NO POWER UPON ACCELERATION PERSISTS. CODES INDICATE ETB NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. *TR

THE PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR AND THE THROTTLE BODY HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A WHILE. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE FORD DEALER BUT THEY ONLY CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY WHEN IT NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE LAST EVENT WAS IN AUGUST 1 WHEN WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE FAIL SAFE MODE CAME UP AND THE CAR SUDDENLY LOST THE POWER AND WOULDN'T RUN FASTER THAN PROBABLY 0.1 MILE PER HOUR. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAPPENED THE FIRST TIME I WAS WITH MY KIDS IN A MAJOR HIGHWAY AND THE CAR SUDDENLY STOP RUNNING. THANK GOD I HAD A CHANCE TO STEER TO THE EMERGENCY LANE. MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE 2005-2007 FREESTYLE, THIS IS A SUPER SAFETY ISSUE AND NOBODY IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. WHEN MY CAR STOPPED I COULD HAVE BEEN HIT ON THE BACK WITH A WORST OUTCOME. I GOT A TOW TRUCK AND THEY TOOK THE CAR TO THE FORD DEALER. THOSE PEOPLE ARE NOT HELPFUL AT ALL AND TREATED ME WITH A BAD ATTITUDE. VERY EXPENSIVE TO CHANGE THAT'S WHY FORD IS NOT GETTING INVOLVED AND ONLY OFFERED TO CLEAN THE PART IN THE EXTENDED WARRANTY, KNOWING THAT WOULDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM. VEHICLE WOULD SURGE AND LOOSE POWER AT ALL SPEEDS. AT TIMES WHEN PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR THE CAR WOULD NOT RESPOND, THEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN WOULD SURGE, THEN WOULD LOSE POWER. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER RECENTLY AS THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A RECALL. DEALER CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY ONLY. NOW IT'S WORSE. I WAS DRIVING BACK FROM THE DEALER AND THE CAR LOST POWER, WRENCH LIGHT ON, AND LEFT ME IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF THE HIGHWAY. SHUT THE CAR OFF AND ON AGAIN AND CONTINUE BUT WITH MINIMAL POWER. I PURCHASED MY FORD FREESTYLE IN JUNE 2011 AND SHORTLY AFTER MY CAR BEGAN LUNGING FORWARD WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER WAS ON. MY CAR BEGAN DOING IT IN FORWARD AND REVERSE GEAR. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR TO THE DEALER TWICE BEFORE. THEY REPLACED THE AIR COMPRESSOR, CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY, AND RESET THE COMPUTER. THIS WILL TREAT THE PROBLEM FOR AWHILE BUT IT WILL ALWAYS COME BACK. LAST WEEK I NEARLY HIT A PEDESTRIAN IN A CROSS WALK WHEN MY CAR DECIDED TO LUNGE FORWARD AT A RED LIGHT WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. MY WIFE HAS NEARLY HIT CARS IN DRIVE THROUGH LINES. AGAIN I PUT MY CAR IN THE SHOP AND THEY ARE DOING THE SAME WORK AS BEFORE. I HAVE BEEN PUSHED INTO INTERSECTIONS AND NEARLY T-BONED. I HAVE ALMOST HIT CARS WHEN TRYING TO BACK UP. THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE BECAUSE EVEN WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE THE CAR CAN MOVE 5-8 FEET. CAR SUDDENLY SLOWED TO APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH AND THEN STOPPED. ACCELERATOR STOPPED FUNCTIONING. I WAITED FOR TEN MINUTES, TURNED THE ENGINE ON AND LIMPED HOME AT 5 MPH. THIS BREAKDOWN OCCURRED AFTER WORKED WAS PERFORMED AT VARSITY FORD IN ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM. DEALER ADVISED THAT THE WORKED PERFORMED (CLEANING THE THROTTLE BODY AND REPROGRAMMING THE POWERTRAIN TRAIN MODULE) DID NOT WORK. AFTER DETAILED DISCUSSIONS WITH THE DEALERSHIP, I WAS ADVISED THAT I NEEDED A COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF THE THROTTLE BODY MODULE AT MY EXPENSE. WHY SHOULD I BE HELD LIABLE FOR THE REPAIR WHEN FORD HAD ALREADY ADMITTED THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM BY CALLING IT IN FOR CLEANING. THIS IS CERTAINLY AN ISSUE FOR THE NHTSA TO ACT ON. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD ABNORMALLY LUNGE FORWARD WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS RELEASED. THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND STOPPED THE VEHICLE FROM ACCELERATING FURTHER BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED AS SOON AS HER FOOT WAS REMOVED FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. UPDATED 7/19/12 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED A MECHANIC CLEANED THE THROTTLE AND FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM AT A COST OF $168. IT IS WORKING BETTER NOW. UPDATED 07/23/12

ALSO, I NOTICED THE NEW REPLACEMENT PART HAD AN ENGINEERING CHANGE THAT ELIMINATED THE ANTI FREEZE HEATER SECTION. I FEEL SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BY RECALLING THE THROTTLE BODY SYSTEM USED IN THIS FORD VEHICLE. IT IS UNCONTROLLABLE AND SOMEONE CAN GET HURT. I TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED AND THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T FIND ANY PROBLEMS. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS. NOW, IN ADDITION TO THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM, THE CAR WILL JUST LOSE POWER WHILE I AM DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND I HAVE TO HOPE TO FIND A SAFE PLACE TO GET OFF THE ROAD. I HAVE TO TURN THE TRUCK OFF AND THEN TRY RESTARTING A FEW TIMES TO GET IT GOING AGAIN. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING WHEN THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED A SMALL EXPLOSION. IMMEDIATELY, GASOLINE FUEL FUMES ENTERED INTO THE VEHICLE CABIN. THE CONTACT EXITED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THAT FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE FUEL CLIP HAD FRACTURED. THE ENTIRE FUEL LINE HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 135,336 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 135,400.

I FIRST NOTICED A SURGE IN THE CAR JUST AS IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE WITH TIME. WHENEVER THE CAR COMES TO A STOP (E.G. IN A PARKING SPOT) THE CAR SURGES IN THE DIRECTION THE TRANSMISSION IS SELECTED. ADDITIONAL BRAKE PRESSURE IS IMMEDIATELY REQUIRED TO KEEP THE VEHICLE FROM MOVING FORWARD. LIKEWISE... WHEN FIRST SELECTING REVERSE FROM A STOPPED POSITION THE VEHICLE SURGES DRASTICALLY WHICH ALSO REQUIRES PROMPT ADDITIONAL BRAKING TO KEEP THE VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL. THE VEHICLE HAS ALWAYS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED BY THE DEALER. THE SURGING MAY BE COMING FROM AN ISSUE WITHIN THE FUNCTION OF THE THROTTLE BODY, BUT NOT 100% SURE OF THAT. THE ADDITION OF FUEL CLEANERS SEEMS TO HELP, BUT ONLY A LITTLE... AND THEN ONLY TEMPORARILY. SYMPTOMS OCCUR YEAR ROUND, BUT SEEM TO BE WORSENED BY HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS SEPTEMBER 2010. I WAS IN A PARKING LOT WITH IN NASHVILLE TN. IT WAS HOT AND AC WAS RUNNING. THE TRANSMISSION WAS IN REVERSE, I TOOK MY FOOT OFF BRAKE AND THE CAR ACCELERATED BACKWARD WITHOUT PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR. ON THE DATE I REPORTED ABOVE SAME SITUATION, IN A PARKING LOT, TEMP OUTSIDE WAS OVER 90 AND AC WAS RUNNING. THE TRANSMISSION WAS IN DRIVE AND WHEN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE IT ACCELERATED FORWARD. MY WIFE HAD SEVERAL INCIDENTS SIMILAR BUT SHE WAS ONLY AWARE THAT THE AC WAS RUNNING WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATED WITH PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL. WE WERE FORTUNATE EACH TIME THERE WAS ENOUGH SPACE TO PRESS THE BRAKE AND STOP THE VEHICLE.

ON MAY 2009, THE CAR STALLED WHILE DRIVING AFTER HITTING A BAD POT HOLE. CAR WOULD NOT RESTART. ON JULY 1, 2009 THE CAR WOULD NOT START AFTER BEING TURNED OFF FOR A BRIEF TIME. THE BEST 3RD PARTY DESCRIPTION I HAVE SEEN IS THAT THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE FAILS WHEN VEHICLE IS PLACED IN GEAR WITH THE A/C ON. IN FAILURE MODE, THE THROTTLE HAS BEEN SEEN TO OPEN AT 16 TO 18% WITH NO FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR. OTHERS SAY FORD HAS A NEWLY DESIGNED THROTTLE PART THAT IS HARD TO GET AND COSTS $800. I WAS TOLD THE PROBLEM WAS A BAD THROTTLE BODY, COST TO FIX $900 PARTS AND LABOR. WE TOLD THEM NOT TO FIX AT THIS TIME AND DID SOME RESEARCH. SPOKE TO A MECHANIC FRIEND AND HE RECOMMENDED CLEANING THROTTLE BODY FIRST TO REMOVE ANY CARBON THAT COULD BE CAUSING BLOCKAGE. WE DID THAT AND PROBLEM WENT AWAY. WHILE DOING THIS RESEARCH FOUND MANY ONLINE FORUMS OF OTHER FORD CUSTOMERS WITH SAME MAKE AND MODEL THAT HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. SEEMS TO PERTAIN TO 2005/2006 MODELS. THE PROBLEM HAS COME BACK IN AUGUST 2010. WE ARE NOW RESEARCHING BUYING A NEW THROTTLE BODY AND HAVING THIS PROBLEM CORRECTED. *TR

2005 FORD FREESTYLE WHILE STOPPED A TRAFFIC LIGHT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT ANYTHING TOUCHING THE GAS PEDAL. HAVE TAKEN VEHICLE IN MANY TIMES, AND WAS AT ONE TIME NOTHING WRONG. THEN FORD DEALER REPLACED SOME PART IN ENGINE. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING AND A/C WAS ON IN PARK, PLACED IN REVERSE VEHICLE LUNGED AGAIN THEN THE FAIL SAFE NOTIFICATION ALONG WITH THE WRENCH CAME ON. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER AS I WAS TOLD TO BRING IT BACK WHEN IT WAS HAPPENING AGAIN. THEY TOLD ME TODAY THAT IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY AND MAP SENSORS THAT NEED TO BE REPAIRED AS THEY MECHANICALLY FAILED I HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AND IT IS NOT A COVERED ITEM WHICH FOR BOTH ITEMS WILL COST ALMOST $1500 WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED UNDER THE COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE OF ANY EXTENDED WARRANTY AS IT IS PART OF THE ENGINE AND WORKING COMPREHENSIVE PARTS. I KNOW OF AT LEAST 100 PEOPLE IN MY AREA THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE THROTTLE BODY, YET FORD WILL NOT DO A RECALL ON THIS AS IT IS CONSIDERED A FIRE/SAFETY HAZARD AS THE MAP SENSORS ARE ON THE MANIFOLD WHICH CONTROLS THE FUEL. BUT BEFORE WE GOT THE CAR BACK, WE RECEIVED A POST CARD FROM THE DEALER SAYING OUR COMPUTER MODULE THAT WAS ORDERED FROM THE DEALER HAS ARRIVED. WHILE GOING HOME FROM DEALERSHIP, CAR BEGAN TO SURGE AT TIMES AND STUDDER AT OTHERS, EVENTUALLY STALLED AND VEHICLE HAD TO BE TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED BEFORE THROTTLE WOULD RESPOND. THIS IS A VERY UNSAFE PROBLEM AS I HAVE BEEN IN FAST MOVING TRAFFIC EACH TIME ITS HAPPENED (45-55 MPH) WITH OUT 4 CHILDREN IN THE CAR. USUALLY COULD BE RESTARTED AFTER VEHICLE STOPS AND IS PLACED IN PARK OR NEUTRAL. *TR UPDATED 08/19/10*BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THEY ALSO DISCOVERED A WIRING HARNESS FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT TO THE ENGINE CONTROL COMPUTER HAD RUBBED AGAINST ONE OF THE AIR CONDITIONER HARD LINES. THE FRICTION HAD WORN AWAY THE INSULATION ON THE HARNESS AND CAUSED THE CAM POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL TO ACT ERRATIC. ACCORDING TO THE TECHNICIAN, THE LOSS OF THE CAM POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STUTTER/STALL. ADDITIONALLY, THE LOSS OF THE CPS SIGNAL INHIBITS THE FIRING OF THE SPARK PLUGS. THE LOSS OF FIRING SIGNAL TO THE SPARK PLUGS CAUSED RAW FUEL TO EXIT THE ENGINE DIRECTLY TO CATALYTIC CONVERTERS, DAMAGING THEM PERMANENTLY. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT INSERTING RAW FUEL INTO AN OPERATING CATALYTIC CONVERTER, AT SOME TEMPERATURE MEASURED IN THE HUNDRED DEGREE CELSIUS WOULD BE A FIRE HAZARD. UPDATED 08/23/10 THE EVENT HAPPENS RANDOMLY. AFTER FIRST OCCURRENCE, VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FORD DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSIS. RESULT WAS "NO FAULT FOUND." NO ADVICE FROM DEALER TO REMEDY PROBLEM OR REFRAIN FROM OPERATING THE VEHICLE. AFTER SOME NUMBER OF OCCURRENCES WHILE TRAVELING OUT OF TOWN, THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT WAS TURNED ON. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FORD DEALERSHIPS. FIRST DEALERSHIP CONFIRMED THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN SYMPTOMS AND REPROGRAMMED THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. AFTER FURTHER OCCURRENCES, VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SECOND DEALERSHIP. THERE THE TECHNICIAN WAS INSTRUCTED NOT TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF WHEN CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED AND TO READ ENGINE CODES. DEALER DETERMINED THAT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY WAS DEFECTIVE, NO SPARE AVAILABLE. VEHICLE FAILED AGAIN NEXT DAY WHILE BEING DRIVEN ON EXPRESSWAY. FAILED TO RESTART AT ALL. REQUIRED TOW.

FREESTYLE LOSES POWER WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE, ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE IS DISPLAYED ON DASH, WILL NOT GO OVER 25 MPH. NEARLY TAKEN OUT BY A SEMI TRUCK WHEN TRY TO MAKE IT TO SHOULDER. SHUT CAR OFF, RESTARTED AND IT APPEARS TO WORK NORMALLY. TAKE IT TO MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSES A BAD THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS). HAD MECHANIC CLEAN THE TPS, BUT PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN SOON AFTER. TOOK IT TO ANOTHER MECHANIC FOR REPLACEMENT OF TPS AND FOUND OUT PART IS ON NATIONAL BACKORDER BECAUSE MANUFACTURER OF THE PART IS BANKRUPT. FORD IS NOW RE-ENGINEERING THE PART AND IT IS DUE TO ARRIVE IN LATE SEPTEMBER, 2009. HAVE ORDERED THE PART TWICE, BOTH TIMES FORD HAS CANCELLED THE ORDER. THE TYPICAL REASON IS WE DID NOT TAKE IT TO AN AUTHORIZED FORD DEALER FOR THE REPAIR. THE CLOSEST DEALER IS AN HOUR AWAY ON THE INTERSTATE AND WE DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND CANNOT AFFORD THE TOWING CHARGES, ESPECIALLY TO HAVE IT SIT ON THEIR LOT WHILE WE WAIT FOR THE PART TO BE BUILT SOMETIME IN SEPTEMBER. WE ARE ABLE TO DRIVE FOR SHORT DISTANCES ON CITY STREETS WITH SPEED LIMITS OF 30 MPH OR LESS. CAR GOES INTO ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE QUITE REGULARLY, APPROXIMATELY 80% OF THE TIME. DT: ON JUNE 24, 2005 CONSUMER WAS DRIVING WHEN GAS GAUGE WENT FROM ALMOST FULL TO EMPTY. CONSUMER STOPPED AT GAS STATION, AND THE VEHICLE ONLY TOOK A COUPLE DOLLARS OF GAS. CONSUMER THEN DROVE DOWN A MOUNTAIN TO GET TO FORD DEALER AND FUEL GAUGE WENT TO EMPTY AGAIN. CONSUMER CONTINUED TO THE DEALER, WHO TOLD CONSUMER THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. DEALER REPLACED FUEL PUMP. BUT IT STILL DID NOT WORK PROPERLY. WHEN VEHICLE ATTEMPTED PULL OUT IT HESITATED FOR A WHILE BEFORE TAKING OFF. CONSUMER STATED THAT FORD GAVE HER AN EXTRA MILEAGE WARRANTY, EXTENDING IT TO 75,000 MILES. CONSUMER PICKED CAR UP ON JULY 8, 2005, AND THERE WAS STILL A PROBLEM WILL FUEL GAUGE UNTIL JULY 10, 2005. CONSUMER SAID THAT AFTER FUELING VEHICLE SHE NOTICED THAT GAUGE DID NOT WORK. VEHICLE DID NOT ACCELERATE. SHE ASSUMED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS DEFECTIVE AGAIN.*AK
