I WAS BACKING MY WIFE'S CAR IN AND IT STARTED ACCELERATING WITHOUT ME PRESSING THE GAS, ACTUALLY MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE THANK GOODNESS. WE PROMPTLY TOOK VEHICLE TO FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY, AND THAT IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND OF COURSE IT WAS SUPPOSEDLY NOT UNDER WARRANTY. THEN THEY CHARGED ME $900 TO FIX IT.I HAVE SINCE DONE LOTS OF RESEARCH ONLINE AS WELL AS IN PERSON AND HAVE COME TO THE REALIZATION THAT THERE ARE THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF THIS SAME COMPLAINT FOR THE 2005-2007 FORD FREESTYLE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 FORD FREESTYLE. WHILE STOPPED AT A LIGHT, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE DEFROSTER STOPPED EMITTING HOT AIR AND THE WINDSHIELD WOULD NOT DEFROST. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE TECHNICIAN REPLACED THE THERMOSTAT, HEATER CORE, AND WATER PUMP. THE FAILURE CONTINUED AFTER THE REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO TO ASSIST. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. CAR WOULD LUNGE AT ANY SPEED, HAD TO IMMEDIATELY PRESS ON BRAKE TO KEEP FROM HITTING OTHER CARS OR JUMPING FORWARD/BACKWARD FROM PARKING SPACE. I TOOK IT TO DEALER, THEY CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY AND FIXED THE MOTOR MOUNT (OVER $500). IN ADDITION, ROTORS HAD TO BE RESURFACED AT 30K MILES AND I NEED TO HAVE THEM REPLACED AT 77K MILES. *TR

THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE I WAS AT THE STORE WITH MY CHILDREN. WE WERE LEAVING THE STORE AS I PUT THE FREESTYLE IN REVERSE, THE ENGINE MADE A LOUD "DROPPING" NOISE AND WOULD NOT REVERSE. I PUT THE CAR BACK INTO PARK AND LOOKED AROUND THE OUTSIDE TO CHECK FOR ANYTHING VISIBLE THAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED THE NOISE OR LACK OF MOVEMENT. I NOTICED THE CAR IDLING AT A HIGH RPM. I GOT BACK IN THE CAR TO TRY AGAIN WITH NO LUCK. THIS IS WHEN THE CAR SURGED FORWARD. I THEN BECAME SCARED AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. WHEN I TURNED IT BACK ON EVERYTHING WAS "NORMAL" AGAIN. I DROVE IT STRAIGHT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP. THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEMS AND TOLD ME TO CONTINUING DRIVING IT AGAIN UNTIL I GOT A LIGHT ON MY DASH TO PROVE TO THEM I WAS HAVING PROBLEMS. THEY SERVICED MY TRANSMISSION AT THAT TIME AS WELL TO FIND NO ISSUES. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS WAS NOT COVERED WITH THE WARRANTY SO I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. SINCE THE FIRST INCIDENT, I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE 5 MORE TIMES, MOSTLY WHILE IN PARKING LOTS WHILE IDLE. HOWEVER THE LAST INCIDENT WAS 1/10/12. THIS SURGE PUT MY VEHICLE IN THE INTERSECTION. I TOOK THE CAR AGAIN TO THE DEALERSHIP. THIS INCIDENT HAD THE SAME ISSUES WITH THE ENGINE SOUNDING LIKE IT WAS DROPPING WHEN SWITCHING INTO DIFFERENT GEARS AND IDLING HIGH. THE CAR WOULD NOT SWITCH OUT OF 2ND GEAR WHILE THE TECH TEST DROVE IT WITH ME. THERE WAS A NEW ISSUE THAT APPEARED WITH THIS INCIDENT. IT IS A GRINDING NOISE WHEN THE GAS WAS APPLIED. THE GRIND IS SIMILAR TO THE SOUND THE BRAKE WOULD MAKE WHEN THE ANTI-LOCK WERE TO KICK IN, EXCEPT THE BRAKES ARE NOT BEING APPLIED. THIS HAS CAUSED THE ANTI-SKID LIGHT AND ABS LIGHT TO KICK ON. I HAVE MAINTAINED MY CAR RELIGIOUSLY SINCE I PURCHASED IT SO I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS IS A MAINTENANCE ISSUE. MY WARRANTY WAS UP AT 50,000 MI AND I HAD 52,000 I HAD TO PAY $1000 OUT OF POCKET FOR A PROBLEM THEY COULDN'T DETECT EARLIER. NOW MY TRANSMISSION HAS GONE BAD I HAVE THE CVT TRANSMISSION AND THE INTERNAL SHAFT HAS GONE BAD AGAIN MY WARRANTY WAS UP AT 60,000 MILES AND I HAVE 64,000 I HAVE SPOKEN TO ONE OF THE MECHANICS AT A FORD DEALER AND HE SAID THEY HAVE BEEN THIS COMPLAINT FROM A LOT OF PEOPLE WITH THE 2005-2007 FORD FREE STYLES THEY THINK IT MAY BE A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSIONS BUT THEY REFUSE TO DO A RECALL. THE 2007 FORD FREESTYLE WILL SOMETIMES LURCH FORWARD OR BACKWARDS FROM A STOP. IN ALL CASES THE CAR WAS INITIALLY AT A STOP WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND WHEN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, BUT BEFORE PLACING MY FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR, THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD IF IN DRIVE OR BACKWARDS IF IN REVERSE. ON ABOUT 10 OCCASIONS MY FORD FREESTYLE HAS LUNGED FORWARD OR BACKWARD WHILE IN REVERSE WITHOUT ME ENGAGING THE GAS PEDAL. IT WILL STOP IF THE BRAKE IS APPLIED BUT IT OFTEN CATCHES ME OFF GUARD. ABOUT HALF OF THE TIMES THE CAR THEN CUTS OFF (ONCE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO TURN ONTO A VERY BUSY STREET). THE CAR WILL RESTART BUT OFTEN CUTS OFF ABOUT 2 MORE TIMES BEFORE DECIDING TO RUN CORRECTLY. USUALLY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND WRENCH SYMBOL WILL ILLUMINATE. THIS IS A VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS PROBLEM. ON ONE OCCASION, AFTER DROPPING OF MY MOTHER AT A STORE I TOOK MY FOOT OFF OF THE BRAKE AND THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD COMING QUITE CLOSE TO MY MOM WHO WAS CROSSING IN FRONT OF MY CAR. AFTER TAKING THE CAR TO A MECHANIC, THE P061B CODE CAME UP FOR INTERNAL CONTROL MOD TORQUE CALCULATION PERFORMANCE. THIS IS THE 2ND TIME MY 2007 FREESTYLE HAS STARTED LUNGING. IT WILL LUNGE IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. STARTS OUT WITH SMALL LUNGES BUT THE LUNGES GET BIGGER. THEN I FIND THAT IT WILL LUNGE SO HARD I NEED TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES. THIS CAUSES THE ENGINE TO STALL. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE UPON RESTART. FIRST EXPERIENCED THE LUNGE PROBLEM IN MAY, 2009. TOOK TO DEALER MECHANIC NEXT DAY AND WAS DIAGNOSED AS FAULTY THROTTLE. REPLACED THE THROTTLE AND NOW I ONCE AGAIN HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. REPLACING THE THROTTLE BOTTLE DIDN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM. I ALSO HAVE HAD AN ISSUE WITH MY A/C AND A BROKEN ENGINE MOUNT. NOT TRUSTING THE FORD DEALER MECHANIC, I TOOK IT TO A THIRD PARTY. THE PARTS ALONE WERE $1000.00 BECAUSE THEY COULD GET THEM FROM FORD ONLY. TOTAL COST TO REPLACE COMPRESSOR AND FIX ENGINE MOUNT $2200. YOU CAN'T DRIVE IN THE HOT ARIZONA SUMMERS WITHOUT AC. THE LUNGING SEEMS TO GET WORSE WITH THE AC ON AND WHEN TURNING THE WHEELS. MY FIRST EXPERIENCE IN 2009 AND THIS ONE HAPPENED WHILE STARTING TO BACK OUT OF PARKING SPOT. HAD AC ON AND CRAMPED WHEELS TO BACK OUT. AS I EASED BY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, THE CAR JUST SHOT BACK ALMOST HITTING THE VEHICLE BEHIND ME. SLAMMED ON BRAKES, CAR STILL TRIED TO BACK UP THEN STALLED. LAST SEPTEMBER, AT ABOUT 75,000 MILES, MY 2007 FORD FREESTYLE BEGAN AN ENGINE SURGE INTERMITTENTLY. THE SURGE HAPPENED EVEN WHEN MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE AND IN BOTH DRIVE AND REVERSE. WHEN IT HAPPENED, THE WRENCH LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND, OCCASIONALLY, THE CAR WOULD SHUT OFF. WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR, IT WOULD MOVE VERY SLOWLY AND THE SPEED DID NOT MATCH WHAT THE ACCELERATOR WAS TELLING IT TO DO. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC WHO COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE ISSUE, NOR COULD HE RECREATE IT IN HIS SHOP. OVER THE WINTER, THE CAR STOPPED HAVING THE ISSUE; HOWEVER, DURING THE SPRING, WHEN I BEGAN USING THE AIR CONDITIONER, THE ISSUE STARTED AGAIN. I TRIED CHANGING THE OIL AND HAD FLUIDS CHECKED, THINKING THIS WOULD HELP BUT TO NO AVAIL. THIS CONTINUED ALL SUMMER AND WAS ESPECIALLY PROBLEMATIC IF I WAS STOPPED IN TRAFFIC OR TRYING TO PARK. ADDITIONALLY, IT WAS VERY STRESSFUL FOR ME AS A DRIVER AND FRIGHTENING FOR MY CHILDREN. LAST TUESDAY EVENING, AFTER IT SAT DURING MY CHILDREN'S OPEN HOUSE, THE FREESTYLE BEGAN SURGING IMMEDIATELY UPON DRIVING IT. THE WRENCH AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS TURNED ON AND THE CAR TURNED OFF. WHEN WE TURNED IT BACK ON, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINED ON AND THE CAR MOVED VERY SLOWLY. WHEN I STARTED THE CAR THE NEXT MORNING, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AND THE AIR CONDITIONER WOULD NOT WORK. WITH EXPERIMENTING, CAR WOULD NOT DO IT WHEN AIR CONDITIONING WAS TURNED OFF. WE RESEARCHED INTERNET AND LEARNED ABOUT SURGING AND THROTTLE BODY PROBLEMS. HAD FUEL INDUCTION SERVICE PERFORMED AND HAVE NOT HAD RECURRENCE IN 90+ DAYS. DID NOT REPLACE THROTTLE BODY YET BUT SUSPECT IT WILL BE CLOGGED UP AGAIN WITH TIME AND MILEAGE. THEN THE CAR SPENT 4 MONTHS IN THE DEALERSHIP'S REPAIR CENTER DUE TO THE TRANSMISSION FAILING AND THERE BEING NO PARTS IN EXISTENCE FOR IT. NOW THAT I FINALLY HAVE THE CAR BACK, IT HAS RESUMED THE SURGING ISSUE AND IS VERY SCARY TO DRIVE. SOMETIMES THE ENGINE DIES AFTER SURGING A FEW TIMES AND SOMETIMES THE "WRENCH" LIGHT COMES ON. TURNING THE ENGINE OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES AND RESTARTING SOMETIMES (BUT NOT ALWAYS) MAKES IT STOP SURGING. TURNING THE CAR OFF AND LEAVING IT FOR SEVERAL HOURS BEFORE USING IT AGAIN SEEMS TO "RESET" THE ISSUE, BUT THE NEXT TIME I GET STUCK IN TRAFFIC OR HAVE TO SIT AT IDLE FOR ANY REASON IT STARTS SURGING AGAIN. SINCE THE FIRST TIME I HAD THE CAR REPAIRED, I HAVE LEARNED THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE THAT YOU ARE INVESTIGATING. ALSO I HAD A MINOR ACCIDENT,THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED BY ITSELF AND I HIT A WALL IN MY GARAGE. ALL THEY DID WAS CLEAN THE THROTTLE UP (IS EXPECTED TO HAVE MORE PROBLEMS LATER) BECAUSE THE COST WAS OVER $700 AND WE CANNOT AFFORD IT AT THE TIME. SO, AFTER WE TOOK IT OUT OF THE SHOP THE CAR IS NOW ONLY ACCELERATING TO NO MORE THAN 4000 RPMS.

EXACT SAME BEHAVIOR IS NOW TAKING PLACE LUNGING TYPICALLY WHEN IDLING THEN MOVING TO ACCELERATION AND THEN STOPPING SUCH AS AT A LIGHT OR PARKING. ALSO, PAUSED ACCELERATION (POTENTIALLY COULD DIE, ACTS LIKE IT WILL) WHEN PULLING OUT FROM A STOPPED POSITION. AGAIN, I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE. I AM WAITING FOR A MONITOR TO BE PLACED ON THE CAR TO CONFIRM ACTIVITY AND PROBLEM PARTS. ON SEVERAL OCCASSIONS BEGINNING ON THIS DATE WHILE DRIVING UNDER 10 MILES PER HOUR, THE CAR WOULD LUNG FORWARD AND THEN WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED THE CAR WOULD STALL. THIS "SURGING" PROBLEM WOULD OCCUR ONCE YOU TOOK YOUR FOOT OFF OF THE BRAKE AFTER BEING STOPPED FOR A PERIOD OF TIME BUT WOULD HAPPEN BEFORE YOU PRESSED THE ACELERATOR. BECAUSE OF THE SEVERITY OF THE ISSUE AND AFTER ALMOST HITTING ANOTHER CAR WHILE IN A PARKING LOT, WE TOOK THE CAR TO A FORD DEALERSHIP. THEY DIAGNOISED THE PROBLEM AND WE HAD TO HAVE THE THROTTLE BODY REPLACED WHICH WAS A SIGNIFICANT COST. SINCE THIS ISSUE IS CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION, WE WANTED TO SUBMIT OUR EXPERIENCE TO BE CONSIDERED AND SO THAT WE WOULD BE NOTIFIED IN THE CASE OF RECALL.

JUST A COUPLE OF SECONDS AFTER PLACING THE VEHICLE IN GEAR, YOU FEEL A SUDDEN LUNGE BUT SINCE YOUR FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE, IT IS EASILY CONTROLLED AND THE SURGE IN RPMS IS VERY BRIEF (LESS THAN TWO SECONDS). THIS OCCURS ON A REGULAR BASIS AND IS TYPICALLY NOTICED WHEN BACKING OUT OF THE GARAGE WHEN THE ENGINE IS IDLING AND JUST AFTER BEING PLACED INTO GEAR. I AM STILL DECIDING WHETHER TO SPEND THE $1000 THEY QUOTED ME FOR REPLACEMENT (A FIRESTONE SERVICE CENTER QUOTED ME $750). APPARENTLY IT IS WELL KNOWN THAT THIS DOES NOT NECESSARILY FIX THE PROBLEM EITHER. THAT WILL COST ME OVER 1000.00 WITH NO GUARANTEE IT WILL WORK. PEOPLE STATE THAT CLEANING THE THROTTLE BODY WILL ALLEVIATE THE PROBLEM TEMPORARILY. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY FORD. HE ACTED LIKE IT WAS A REAL RARITY FOR THIS TO HAPPEN AND THAT I WAS GETTING A HUGE DEAL. HE EVEN CHARGED ME $99 FOR THE PRIVILEGE OF DIAGNOSING THE PROBLEM. WE ARE FEARFUL THAT THIS ACCELERATION WILL CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE IN A PARKING LOT OR THAT THE PROBLEM WILL START OCCURRING AT OTHER TIMES. 2007 FORD FREESTYLE WITH 36,000 MILES LAST SUMMER BEGAN "LURCHING" WHEN PULLING INTO/OUT OF PARKING SPACE. THIS SUMMER NOW AT 57,000 MILES THE LURCHING IS BECOMING MORE FREQUENT. IT OCCURS PRIMARILY WHEN THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS ARE COMBINED: 1) ENGINE IS WARM, 2) A/C IS ON, 3) AT COMPLETE STOP WITH BRAKES APPLIED AND 4) TURN THE STEERING WHEEL IN PREPARATION FOR A TURN. REVIEWED SEVERAL OWNER FORUMS FOR THE PROBLEM AND SEVERAL OWNERS REPORT SAME PROBLEM WITH ANSWER FROM FORD BEING "REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY". PROBLEM- THROTTLE BODY REPLACEMENT HARD TO FIND. TOOK MINE IN FOR SERVICE AND REPORTED ABOVE PROBLEM TO SERVICE DEPT. ANSWER WAS "NEED NEW THROTTLE BODY". WILL TRY TO FIND ONE, ON BACK ORDER. "CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE" PER FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT. AFTER EVALUATION CONDITION IS WORSE. CAR NOW IDLES BELOW 500 RPMS, AND FLUCTUATES CONSTANTLY, EVEN W/O A/C ON (WORSE WHEN A/C ON). A/C COMPRESSOR WAS JUST REPLACED THIS SUMMER AND THE CONDITION WORSENED WHEN THE COMPRESSOR WAS REPLACED. THE CONSUMER STATED SINCE FILING THE COMPLAINT, SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT SHOP AND HAD THE FUEL INDUCTION SERVICE DONE FOR $125.00. IT HAS BEEN 5 WEEKS AND THE PROBLEM HAS NOT RETURNED. IT APPEARED THAT THE DIRTY FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM PREVENTED THE THROTTLE BODY FROM GETTING THE AIR IT NEEDED TO FUNCTION PROPERLY. UPDATED IVOQ 09/13/10 *TR

MY FREESTYLE SEL VEHICLE'S (6/2006 PROD. DATE) WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO BE FOR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. CAR HESITATES ON SHIFTING, ESPECIALLY DOWNHILL. IN THE MORNING A SLIGHT LURCH IS EXPERIENCED WHEN PULLING OFF BEFORE CAR IS WARMED SUFFICIENTLY. CAR HAS 40K MILES AND HAS A 100K WARRANTY SO THE DEALER ASSESSED THE PROBLEM AT A THROTTLE BODY AND PUT IN A PART ORDER. THE PART NEEDED IS A NON-WATER COOLED ONE WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND UNTIL IS GOES INTO MANUFACTURE IN DECEMBER. I UNDERSTAND THE EARLIER MODEL 500S AND FREESTYLES USE THE WATER COOLED VERSION. THE DEALER MADE US PAY FOR A RENTAL AND WE HAD TO COMPLAIN TO THE SERVICE MANAGER PROFUSELY BEFORE A LOANER CAME IN. SEEMS WE HAVE BEEN LUCKY, I HOPE FOCUSES DON'T HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE ADVISOR THAT IT IS NOT TYPICAL FOR THESE CARS TO SHUTDOWN BUT WHY RISK IT. ANOTHER DEALER RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND DESCRIBED THE STATUS IN THE PARTS SYSTEM AS THE "CODE FROM '!@#$%". I HAVE BEEN COMMUNICATING DIRECTLY WITH THE MANUFACTURER. MAYBE FORD SHOULD GO BANKRUPT TOO. *TR
