DUE TO A DESIGN FLAW, THE CAR'S COMPUTER SYSTEM CANNOT ACCEPT AN INDICATION OF MORE THAN ONE DIGIT IN THE "AGE" ENTRY. FOR THIS REASON, THE ELECTRIC HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY STOPS WORKING WHEN THE CAR APPROACHES 10 YEARS OF AGE, CAUSING A SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS HESITATION IN THE DRIVE TRAIN WHEN STARTING FROM A DEAD STOP CREATING A VERY DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITION, ESPECIALLY WHEN MAKING A CROSS-TRAFFIC TURN. REPEATED REQUESTS FROM MY FORD DEALER TO FORD MOTOR COMPANY FOR AN EXPLANATION OF HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. MY LETTERS TO FORD SENIOR MANAGEMENT HAVE GONE UNANSWERED FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. I HAVE SINCE LEARNED HOW TO RESET THE "AGE" DATA, AND MY DEALER HAS FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS TO ELIMINATE THE CONDITION. FORD SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO ISSUE A RECALL FOR CORRECTION OF THIS KNOWN DESIGN FLAW.

THIS IS ESPECIALLY PRONOUNCED WHEN MAKING A LEFT TURN AGAINST TRAFFIC.

THE DEALER CHECKED. NO MALFUNCTION CODE WAS DETECTED. THEY TOLD THAT 95% IT IS DUE TO THE CLOGGING OF ELECTRONIC THROTTLE VALVE. SO REPLACED. I ASKED AND THEY SHOWED THE OLD ONE. I OBSERVED NO CLOGGING OR GREASE ON THE VALVE. IT WAS CLEAN. THIS PARTS/OR THROTTLE VALVE SYSTEM WAS FUNCTIONING. THE CAR HAS 85,000 MILE.I SPOKE TO FORD ABOUT THIS SAFETY ISSUE. THEY DON'T DO ANY BECAUSE THE WARRANTY EXPIRE.

STARTING JULY 2017 I NOTICED THAT MY THE GASOLINE ENGINE OF FUSION HYBRID HAD DEVELOPED A NOTICEABLY "ROUGH" IDLE WHEN IT CAME ON. IT ALSO RAN "ROUGH" AND HAD AN UNEVEN THROTTLE RESPONSE. A YELLOW WRENCH WOULD ALSO APPEAR OCCASIONALLY ON THE DISPLAY PANEL. THE OWNERS MANUAL INDICATED A "THROTTLE CONTROL/POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION"AND RECOMMENDED CONTACTING THE AUTHORIZED DEALER. BILL COLLINS FORD IN LOUISVILLE ,KY CHECKED AND RAN DIAGNOSTICS BUT COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. ON SEPTEMBER 25, WHILE DRIVING TO WORK IN THE MORNING THE CAR EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN DRASTIC DROP IN SPEED GOING FROM ABOUT 65MPH TO ABOUT 30MPH. THE CAR BECOME UNRESPONSIVE TO THE THROTTLE. THE GASOLINE ENGINE HAD COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND THE CAR WAS LIMPING ALONG POWERED BY THE ELECTRIC ENGINE. BOTH THE WRENCH AND THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATORS LIT UP ON THE DISPLAY AND STAYED ON. LUCKILY I MADE IT OFF THE EXPRESSWAY AND GOT TO WORK. THIS WAS VERY SCARY AND I WAS LUCKY TO NOT BE REAR ENDED OR CRASHING THE CAR. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO RESTART AFTER ABOUT THREE HOURS THE THE GASOLINE ENGINE CAME BACK ON BUT WITH A VERY "ROUGH" IDLE. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. THIS TIME THEY DIAGNOSED A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY AND FOR ABOUT $600 REPLACED THE ETB, CLEANED THE "MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR" AND "REPROGRAMMED THE COMPUTER". HOWEVER, THE THE CAR CONTINUES TO IDLE "ROUGH" AND HAS POOR THROTTLE RESPONSE, WHICH WERE ISSUES THE CAR HAD LEADING INTO THE LOSS OF POWER ON THE EXPRESSWAY. THE DEALERSHIP DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AND CLAIMS TO BE IN TOUCH THE FORD FACTORY ENGINEERS TO FIND A SOLUTION. THERE IS NO RESPONSE SO FAR. SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET, I UNDERSTAND THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH FORD FUSIONS PARTICULARLY THE 2010 MODEL YEAR. NHTSA MANDATED A RECALL PROBLEM FOR 2010 FUSIONS GASOLINE ENGINES BUT NOT HYBRID MODELS!

MY FORD FUSION HYBRID 2010 STALLED WITHOUT ANY WARNING IN THE 5TH LANE OF I-85 IN ATLANTA. MY WIFE, THE RESPONDING POLICE OFFICER, AND MYSELF WERE IN GRAVE DANGER BECAUSE OF THIS. WE WERE BLESSED AND FORTUNATE THAT AN OFFICER HAPPENED TO BE VERY CLOSE WHEN OUR CAR SUDDENLY DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSTATE. THE INTERSTATE TRAFFIC WAS HEAVY - BUT SLOW MOVING DUE TO CONSTRUCTION. THE OFFICER RESPONDED - LITERALLY - WITHIN SECONDS SINCE HE SAW WHAT WAS HAPPENING. HE PLACED HIS CAR BEHIND OURS WITH HIS LIGHTS FLASHING. THE THE OFFICER AND I HAD TO PUSH MY VEHICLE OFF TO THE SIDE. WE WERE ALL IN GRAVE DANGER! AS THE OFFICER WAS CALLING FOR HELP AND A WRECKER, MY CAR SUDDENLY BEGAN WORKING AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES. THIS WAS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION. I THEN RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AFTER I RETURNED HOME ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT MANY OTHER FORD FUSION OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM OF RANDOM STALLING. THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE! WHAT IS FORD WAITING FOR TO RECALL THIS VEHICLE?? I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE DRIVING THIS CAR NOW. IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL A TRAGEDY OCCURS BECAUSE OF THIS. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO LOCAL AUTO PARTS STORE AND PULLED CODES MYSELF (115) DOLLARS CHEAPER THEN THE DEALERSHIP WOULD HAVE DONE IT. THROTTLE BODY CONTROL FAILURE. THIS IS THE SAME ENGINE THAT HAS EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR ALOT OF VIN NUMBERS BUT MY CAR HAS THIS ISSUE AMD ISNT COVERED.

THE MOST RECENT DATE WAS AUGUST 27, 2017. THE MANUFACTURER WAS UNABLE TO PROVIDE A REASONABLE TIME FRAME TO SUPPLY THE PART TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE REMAINED PARKED SINCE MAY OF 2017. THE CONTACT HAD TO OBTAIN A RENTAL VEHICLE DUE TO THE DELAY FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED SEVERAL TIMES AND THE CONTACT WAS STILL WAITING FOR THE PART MONTHS LATER. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V384000 (AIR BAGS) AND WAS UNCERTAIN AS TO WHEN THE REMEDY AND PARTS WOULD BE SUPPLIED TO THE DEALER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG OFF INDICATOR KEPT RANDOMLY ILLUMINATING WHILE WAITING FOR THE PART FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE. VIN TOOL CONFIRMS PARTS NOT AVAILABLE. UPDATED 09/27/17*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED A NEW GAS TANK AND A NEW CAR BATTERY WERE INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE.*JS *TR

FORD COVERS NON HYBRID MODELS WITH REPLACEMENT AT N/C TO OWNERS BUT EXCLUDES HYBRID COVERAGE FOR SAME PART ON SAME ICE ENGINE WITH SAME SYMPTOMS. SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ESP IN URBAN TRAFFIC SITUATION AND THIS SHOULD BE A MANDATORY RECALL.

JULY 29, 2016 DRIVING HOME FROM WORK I WAS DRIVING UPHILL WHEN I NOTICED THE CAR LOSING POWER, NO AMOUNT OF PUSHING DOWN ON THE ACCELERATOR MADE A DIFFERENCE. THE CAR DID NOT STALL BUT IT COULD NOT GAIN MOMENTUM. THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD TO STOP IN THE RIGHT LANE BECAUSE THERE WAS NO SHOULDER AND THE ENGINE HAD STARTED MAKING A VERY LOUD/ROUGH SOUND. I WAITED 5 MIN AND STARTED THE CAR AGAIN. EVERYTHING LOOKED FINE, THE INDICATOR LIGHT HAD CLEARED AND ENGINE SOUNDED NORMAL. I DROVE THE REST OF THE WAY HOME WITHOUT INCIDENT. OVER THE WEEKEND THE CAR OPERATED NORMALLY. ON MONDAY 8/1/2016 ON MY WAY TO WORK THE PROBLEM STARTED AGAIN. THE CAR REMAINED OPERATIONAL BUT COULDN'T GO MORE THAN 20-30 MPH. THE HYBRID BATTERY WOULD DRAIN VERY QUICKLY AND THE REGENERATION MOTOR RAN CONSTANTLY AND SOMETIME VERY ROUGH. I MANAGED TO DRIVE IT TO MY MECHANIC. HIS DIAGNOSTIC REPORT SHOWED A P2112 CODE (THROTTLE BODY STUCK CLOSED). HE PROPOSED CLEANING THE VALVE AS A FIRST STEP BUT HE DIDN'T THINK THAT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. WE TRIED THAT BUT TWO DAYS LATER THE PROBLEM CAME BACK. MY MECHANIC ADVISED THAT WHILE HE COULD REPLACE THE ETB, HE WAS NOT EQUIPPED TO CALIBRATE IT AND THAT ONLY FORD COULD DO THIS WORK. HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT WHILE RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM HE'D COME ACROSS INFORMATION THAT MY PROBLEM MIGHT BE COVERED BY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. I CALLED FORD ABOUT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND THEY TOLD ME THAT HYBRIDS ARE NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT NHTSA DROPPED THE BALL ON THIS IF THE SAME PROBLEM IS HAPPENING TO HYBRID OWNERS AS IS TO NON-HYBRID OWNERS FOR VEHICLE MODELS OF THE SAME YEARS. MY VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 58,700 MILES WHEN TROUBLE STARTED. NO ONE I SPOKE TO AT FORD COULD TELL ME WHY HYBRIDS ARE NOT COVERED BY THE ETB EXTENDED WARRANTY. SEEMS TO ME NHTSA NEEDS TO RE-OPEN THEIR INVESTIGATION ON THIS ISSUE!

I DROVE HOME (ABOUT 4 MILES) AND HAD TO RESTART, COAST AND STOP ABOUT 7 TIMES. I WAS DRIVING ON A ROAD WHERE THE SPEED LIMIT IS 35 MPH, MADE IT HOME AND CONTINUED TO DRIVE AROUND IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC, TO SEE IF IT WOULD CONTINUE. IT HAPPENED 2 MORE TIMES. PUT THE CAR IN THE GARAGE AND CALLED WEBB FORD IN HIGHLAND, IN THE NEXT DAY. WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR 8 MILES TO THE DEALERSHIP WITH NO INCIDENT. THE CAR IS THERE NOW. HAD I BEEN DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, IN THE LEFT HAND LANE I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. I PURCHASED THIS CAR USED IN JUNE OF 2015 WITH 79,900 MILES ON IT AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS UNTIL NOW. MEDIA REPORTS THE RECALL INCLUDES 2010 VEHICLES MADE IN HERMOSILLO, MEXICO. FORD DID TELL ME THAT MINE WAS MANUFACTURED THERE AT THE END OF FEBRUARY 2010 AND DID SAY THAT MINE WAS NOT INCLUDED, BUT WILL NOT TELL ME WHAT PERCENTAGE OF THE VEHICLES BUILT THERE DURING FEBRUARY AND MARCH 2010 ARE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I HAVE BEEN CORRESPONDING WITH THEM VIA EMAIL FOR SEVERAL WEEKS NOW AND THEY CONTINUALLY EVADE ANSWERING MY CONCERN. THE COMPANY'S LAST MESSAGE SAID THE INFORMATION I AM REQUESTING IS NOT AVAILABLE. IT IS SURPRISING TO BE TOLD BY A MODERN MANUFACTURING FACILITY LIKE FORD THAT IT DOES NOT KNOW HOW MANY UNITS IT MANUFACTURED DURING A GIVEN PERIOD OF TIME AT A SPECIFIC FACILITY. WHY WOULD THEY REFUSE TO PROVIDE SUCH INFORMATION UNLESS IT WOULD REVEAL THAT ALL THE VEHICLES BUILT AT HERMOSILLO IN FEBRUARY AND MARCH 2010 CONTAIN THE DEFECT? THIS IS ESPECIALLY TROUBLING TO ME BECAUSE IT INVOLVES A FUEL ISSUE AND PUTS ONE IN MIND OF THE CORVAIR SITUATION.

EVENTUALLY THE DEALER EVALUATED THE VEHICLE AND REPLACED THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY.

ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER ON A SATURDAY I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AGAIN, AT ABOUT 65 MPH, WHEN THE CAR SEEMED TO LOSE ACCELERATION. STANDING ON GAS PEDAL PRODUCED NO RESULT. MY CAR WARRANTY EXPIRED IN LATE DECEMBER 2013. IN JANUARY I HAD AN INSTANCE INVOLVING ENGINE LIGHTS (WRENCHES ON DASH) ILLUMINATED AS I WAS DRIVING IN THE 54-60 MPH RANGE. POWER WAS REDUCED AND THE VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN BUT COULD STILL MOVE AT ABOUT 30-35 MPH. AFTER TURNING OFF THE CAR IT LATER RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION WITH THE EXCEPTION THAT I NOTICED LOWER MPG. WHEN I FIRST GOT THE CAR 41 MPG WAS THE BEST I COULD GET WHILE DRIVING TO MAXIMIZE MPG. THROUGH THE YEARS MPG WENT DOWN TO 37, STABILIZED, AND THEN IN RECENT MONTHS 35, THEN 30, ETC. I HAD TO PAY $460 TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY AND TO REPROGRAM THE COMPUTER. IN LIGHT OF ALL THE PROBLEMS EXPERIENCED BY FORD VEHICLES WITH THESE THROTTLE BODIES, I BELIEVE FORD SHOULD PAY FOR THIS REPAIR, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY COVERAGE "TIMED OUT" (I.E. BEFORE THE 36,000 MILEAGE WAS EXCEEDED) IN LATE DECEMBER 2013. THEY GAVE THE DANGEROUS CAR BACK TO US FRI, JAN 31ST 130 MILES DRIVEN IN 2ND LANE (ONE FROM CARPOOL LANE) AT 65 MPH ACCEL LIGHTLY SUDDENLY, CAR'S GAS GAVE OUT, LIKE BEFORE THE ROAD CURVED TO RIGHT. TRY TO STEER CAR RIGHT TO FOLLOW LANE AS CAR DECEL NOTICED THAT STEERING NOT RESPONDING, EVEN TO STRONGEST INPUTS (ALMOST LIKE LOCKED, LIKE CAR WAS OFF) TRIED TO HIT BRAKES, BUT PEDAL SANK TO FLOOR NO RESPONSE REGARDLESS OF PRESSURE. AS I READ THE FORUMS, IT IS OBVIOUS TO ME THAT THIS IS A NATIONWIDE PROBLEM, LOOKING BACK, I'VE HAD 2 CARS WITH THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM. THE SERVICE MEN AT THE DEALERSHIP KNOW THAT THE PROBLEM IS SPECIFIC TO THE THROTTLEBODY, WHICH IS DEFECTIVE, AND THERE IS OVER A WEEK BACKLOG ON THE PARTS AS MORE AND MORE CARS ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS PROBLEM, TO LOSE POWER TO A VEHICLE IN MOTION AND FORD IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE, YET THEY ARE TAKING NO STEPS IN ADDRESSING THE ISSUE. IT IS GOING TO COST ME $600 TO HAVE THE PART REPLACED, AS IT IS OUTSIDE THE 3 YEAR WARRANT, YET FORD KNOWS THAT THIS WAS A MODEL WIDE ISSUE WITH A DEFECTIVE CAR PART.
