TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD RANGER. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, IT ROLLED INTO A NEIGHBOR'S YARD WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE RECURRED WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED ON AN INCLINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO BORMAN AUTOPLEX (470 W BOUTZ RD, LAS CRUCES, NM 88005, 575-525-4500) WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 200,000.

TRUCK LOST BRAKES WHILE GOING DOWNHILL. FRAME CORROSION HAD CAUSED RIGHT SPRING HANGER TO FAIL, AND CORRODED BRAKE LINE BURST. I WAS ABLE TO PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL AND AVOID AN ACCIDENT. BRAKE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AFTER THE INCIDENT. MECHANIC PUT THE TRUCK ON A LIFT, AND IDENTIFIED SEVERE CORROSION TO THE BRAKE LINES, DIFFERENTIAL, FRAME, AND SEVERAL OTHER UNDERCARRIAGE COMPONENTS. TRUCK HAD BEEN UNDERCOATED AND WASHED REGULARLY, AND HAS LESS THAN 105,000 MILES. MECHANIC SUGGESTED ALL NEW BRAKE LINES, TOTAL FRAME, AND REAR END REPLACEMENT. *TR

I'VE BEEN TOLD FOR YEARS NOW BY OTHER FORD TRUCK OWNERS THAT THEIR TRANSMISSION WENT OUT AROUND 40,000 MILES, MINE DIED AT 60,. EVEN FORD'S SALES PEOPLE HAVE ASKED ME ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION. THERE IS A HISTORY HERE OF FORD TRANSMISSIONS SELF DESTROYING. *JB

WHILE MERGING ONTO THE HIGHWAY THE 4X4 HIGH LIGHT CAME ON WITH THE SELECTOR SWITCH STILL IN THE 2-WHEEL DRIVE POSITION. STOPPED THE TRUCK IMMEDIATELY AND RESTARTED THE TRUCK. ONCE MORE ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE UP TO HIGHWAY SPEED, WHEN THE 4X4 HIGH LIGHT AGAIN FLASHED ON AND OFF. AT APPROXIMATELY 50+ MPH THE TRUCK SLAMMED INTO 4X4 LOW. THE SELECTOR SWITCH REMAINED IN THE 2-WHEEL DRIVE POSITION.

I HAD NO IDEA THAT FORD HAD FIRST STARTED USING 5 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS IN 1999, SO THE MECHANIC TOLD ME. I THOUGHT I BOUGHT A 4 SPEED TRANSMISSION AND THAT WAS WHAT FORD SAID THEY SOLD ME. THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN TWO YEARS LATER IN MAY 9, 2003, AND AGAIN I HAD TO GET MY TRANSMISSION REBUILT. DO I HAVE A LEGITIMATE COMPLAINT? *LA

WHILE TRAVELLING ON INTERSTATE 25 NORTHBOUND NEAR ALBUQUERQUE, REAR AXLE BROKE ON THE RIGHT REAR OF THE VEHICLE. RIGHT REAR WHEEL WITH WHEEL & PART OF AXLE SEPARATED, CAUSING MULTIPLE ROLLOVER OF THE VEHICLE. DRIVER WAS SEVERELY INJURED AND THE TRUCK WAS TOTALLED. NO AIR BAGS DEPLOYED IN THE VEHICLE ALTHOUGH THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT FRONT END IMPACT ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE.
PROBLEM1: LOUD, OBNOXIOUS SQUAWKING SOUND FROM CLUTCH AREA EVERY TIME I ENGAGE INTO FIRST GEAR, AND SOMETIMES WHEN DOWNSHIFTING AT SLOW SPEEDS. FORD HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM SINCE 1998 BUT STILL HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING TO RESOLVE IT. PROBLEM2: MY REAR ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ALWAYS LOCK UP WHENEVER IT HAS RAINED OR SNOWED. I HAVE TO SLAM THEM ABOUT 10 TIMES TO GET THEM TO STOP LOCKING UP. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS, AND MY DEALERSHIP WILL NOT TRY TO FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY SAY THIS IS NORMAL. I DISAGREE BECAUSE THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME ON ANY OTHER VEHICAL WITH ANTI-LOCK BREAKS.
VEHICLE IS DRIFTING BOTH FORWARD AND BACKWARD WHEN PUT INTO GEAR, AND WHEN VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF. ALSO, BRAKING SYSTEM FAILS TO ENGAGE UNDER WET CONDITIONS, RESULTING IN EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. THEN, BRAKE SYSTEM WOULD NOT DISENGAGE AFTER START UP OF VEHICLE , RESULTING IN A NOISE THAT COMES FROM REAR END OF VEHICLE. *AK DEALER STATES DRIFTING DOES NOT OCCUR WHEN PARKING BRAKE IS USED, FOR A MANUAL VEHICLE DEALER STATES THIS IS NORMAL. BRAKES HAVE LOCKED UP AND HAVE FAILED TO RELEASE, ON ONE OCCASION THE CONSUMER HEARD A LOUD DULL CLUNK SOUND IN THE REAR AXLE AREA AND VEHICLE MOVED AFTER THAT. CONSUMER STATES VEHICLE MOVED BACK QUICKLY IN FAST SHORT SPURTS AND THEN GAVE WAY ROLLING QUICKLY BACKWARD, AFTER THAT IS STALLED AND WAS DIFFICULT TO RESTART. *SLC
OIL GAUGE STICKS IN COLD WEATHER, IT WILL EVENTUALLY WORK. THERE IS A BUMP/CLUNK IN REAR END ON INITIAL ACCELERATION AND VEHICLE SHAKES AT 70+ MPH. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT 30 MPH REAR AXLE BROKEN. IT WAS LIKE RUNNING OVER A SPEED BUMP AT TIME IT WAS HAPPENING. DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. *AK THE REAR AXLE BROKE WHILE THE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING CAUSING AN ACCIDENT IN WHICH THE DRIVER WAS INJURED. *YH
I FEEL THAT MY FORD RANGER IS AN UNSAFE VEHICLE. I HAVE HAD MANY PROBLEMS WITH IT SINCE I BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW. EVERYTHING STEMMING FROM HOLES IN THE FLOOR TO A FAULTY TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE AMONG FAULTY POWER WINDOWS AND ELECTRICAL ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION.. I JUST WONDER WHAT IS NEXT. FORD IS BURYING THEIR HEADS IN THE SAND. NOW I AM STUCK WHITH THIS PROBLEM WHAT ARE MY RIGHTS? OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH FORD MANUAL TRANSMIN. MANY OF MY FRIENDS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. ON OCTOBER 4, 2000 MY SON WAS TRAVELING AT 30 MPH ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET WHEN HIS DRIVERS SIDE FRONT TIRE ASSEMBLY CAME OFF SPINDLE CAUSING HIM TO GO OUT OF CONTROL AND HIT A VAN AND A BOAT THAT WERE PARKED IN FRONT OF A RESIDENCE HERE IN MIDLAND, TEXAS. THE POLICE REPORT THAT WAS FILED BACKS UP THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS: WHILE TRAVELING EAST ON STANOLIND STREET AT 30 MPH, IN THE 4400 BLOCK, THE 1999 FORD RANGER'S DRIVERS SIDE FRONT WHEEL DISENGAGED FROM THE SPINDLE CAUSING IT TO PULL LEFT AND ALONG SIDE A PARKED LATE MODEL CHEVY VAN. THE RANGER HAD NO BRAKES, AND SCRAPED ALONG THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE VAN, LEAVING SCRAPE MARKS AND AXLE GREASE, AND TIRE RUBBER RESIDUE ALONG THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE VAN. THE RANGER HIT THE FENDER OF THE VAN AND SINCE DRIVER WAS TRYING TO STEER AWAY FROM THE WRECK, THIS ALLOWED THE FRONT OF THE RANGER TO PULL TO THE RIGHT BACK TOWARDS THE STREET. AT THAT POINT THE ENTIRE "WHEEL ASSEMBLY" CAME OFF AND TRAVELED 4 HOUSES AHEAD OF THE NOW 3-WHEELED RANGER. AFTER THE WHEEL ASSEMBLY EXITED, THE KNUCKLE HIT THE PAVEMENT AND FORCED THE RANGER INTO THE BOAT WHICH WAS PARKED IN FRONT OF THE VAN. THE BOAT TRAILER WHEELS WERE "CHOCKED" AND THE IMPACT OF THE RANGER LIFTED THE BOAT TRAILER INTO THE DRIVEWAY NEXT DOOR TO WHERE IT WAS PARKED. WHEN THE MIDLAND POLICE ARRIVED,WE ALL STARTED DISCOVERING THE PARTS LYING IN THE STREET WELL BEFORE THE CRASH SITE. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE HUB CAP CAME OFF FIRST AND ROLLED TO THE GRASS ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE (4' NORTH) OF THE VAN. THE AXLE DUST COVER CAME OFF NEXT AND ROLLED TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE STREET ( SOUTH), EVEN WITH THE BOAT. THE AXLE BEARING AND SEAL WERE FOUND 20' IN FRONT OF THE VAN SO THEY PROBABLY CAME OUT NEXT. THE AXLE NUT AND KEEPER WERE FOUND BESIDE THE BOAT IN THE GRASS. THE "WHEEL ASSEMBLY" REFERRED EARLIER HAS EVERYTHING STILL ATTACHED ( BRAKE LINE, BRAKE SHOE, HUB, LUGS, CALIPER, EVERYTHING!). I HAVE KEPT THESE PARTS FOR YOUR INSPECTION IN MY HOME GARAGE.. *AK

DRIVING AT APPROX 25 MPH WHEN AXLE BROKE AND PASSENGER'S TIRE SHOTOUT, CAUSING VEHICLE TO SPIN OUT OF CONTROL AND HIT A STONE WALL. VEHICLE WAS NOT DRIVEN IN A IMPROPER MANNER. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION.*AK

VEHICLE WOULD NOT SWITCH INTO 4WD WHEN DEALER NOTIFIED I WAS TOLD THAT I HAD TO BE IN NEUTRAL TO SWITCH INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVE. AFTER THREE ADDITIONAL VISITS TO THE DEALERSHIP THE SWITCH MOTOR WAS FINALLY REPLACED. DEALER DID NOT WANT TO ADMIT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH VEHICLE.

FAULTY DRIVETRAIN; ALSO, A CONNECTING ROD FROM ENGINE PERTRUDED THROUGH OIL PAN WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, CAUSING ENGINE TO SIEZE AND BLOW. *AK
WHEN APPLYING BRAKES VEHICLE WOULD PULL TO LEFT OR TO RIGHT. WHEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS CONSUMER WOULD HEAR LOUD/WEIRED RUBBING NOISE. CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER. DEALER FELT NOISE WAS COMING FROM DRIVELINE AND FRONT END ALIGNMENT, BUT COULD NOT CORRECT DEFECT. *AK
TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS: TRANSMISSION SHUTTERS AND SHAKES CAR VIOLENTLY AT START OF ACCELERATION, AND IN BETWEEN SOME GEARS. TRANSMISSION CLUNK INTO GEAR INTERMITENTLY. SHUTTERS AT BRAKING AS TRANSMISSION IS GEARING DOWN. PROBLEM WAS SO BAD. IN SHOP 42 DAYS TOTAL. DEALER (PEYTON CREAMER) TRIED TO FIX. COULD NOT. AFTER FILING UNDER CA LEMON LAW TO GET A REPLACEMENT VEHICAL, FORD OFFERED ME A BUY BACK OF MY VEHICAL. I ACCEPTED. I NOW HAVE A NEW TRUCK AND IT TOO IS DOING MOST OF THE SAME TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. I NO LONGER OWN THIS 1999 TRUCK BUT DO STILL OWN THE 2000 TRUCK WHICH I TOO HAVE MADE A COMPLANINT ON. DEALER IS PRETTY MUCH REFUSING TO HAVE MY TRUCK IN THIER SHOP ANY MORE UNLESS THEY HEAR FROM FORD.
WHEN PUTTING VEHICLE INTO 3RD GEAR VEHICLE GRINDS AND SLOWS DOWN. DEALER REBUILT TRANSMISSION, AND THE PROBLEM REOCCURRED. *AK

REAR END IS THREE QUATERS OF AN INCH OFF LINE. WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED VEHICLE PULLS TO THE LEFT. DEALERS HAS REPAIRED THE VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES. ALSO, TRANSAXLE SEAL IS LEAKING. MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. *AK

WAS DRIVING NOTICED BLACK SMOKE COMING FROM DRIVER'S SIDE LEFT REAR WHEEL. CALLED DEALER AND HAD IT TOWED. WAS TOLD BY DEALER THAT A DEFECTIVE REAR AXLE AUSED SMOKE TO ENTER VEHICLE. *AK
TRANSMISSION MOUNT RETAINING BOLT LOOSE(5TURNS); MOUNT TO TRANSMISSION/EXHAUST BRACKET
WHAT IS HAPPENING IS, I BOUGHT THE TRUCK DECEMBER 1998 SERVICE REQUIRED IN JAN 99 APPROX. THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM THEY DAID AFTER REPEATED ATTEMPTS BY ME TO GET THEM TO LET ME SHOW THEM AND THEY DID NOT COMPLY. THEN FORD QUESTIONAIRE PEOPLE CALLED ME, AND HE SAID IF THE PROBLEM WASNT FIXED TO CALL BACK I NO LONGER HAVE THE NAME OR NUMBER BUT THE TRUCK WENT BACK AGAIN TO THE DEALER. THEY SAID THE SECOND TIME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. I JUST GOT THROUGH WITH AN ENTIRE WEEK AND A HALF OF ARGUING WITH THEM THEY ONCE AGAIN SAID NOT A THING WRONG, THE SERVICE MANAGER WOULD NOT EVEN GIVE ME THE COURTESY OF TALKING TO ME. THE MECHANIC TOOK THE TRUCK AFTER I SAID I WAS NOT LEAVING AND PUT HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE PUT THE TRUCK IN GEAR SK
WHEN BRAKES HEAT UP THEY PULL SEVERLY LEFT...HAVE HAD IT CHECKED 4 TIMES...REPLACED PADS 3 TIMES...CHECKED ROTORS CALIPERS...NO FIX YET...ALSO DRIVESHAFT CLUNK NOISE AFTER CHANGING GEAR AND ACCELERATING...REPLACED DRIVESHAFT ONCE NO FIX...NOW THEY SAY THERE IS CURRENTLY NO FIX. *AK
I RETURNED MY TRUCK TO FORD DEALERSHIP COMPLAINING OF A SHARP "CLUNKING" IN THE DRIVELINE WHEN LETTING UP ON ACCELERATOR. THE DEALER ADDED 1 QT OF TRANSMISSION FLUID, RAN COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS WITHOUT ANY INDICATION OF A PROBLEM. IT WAS REQUESTED THAT I TAKE A DEALERSHIP TECHNICIAN ON A TEST DRIVE TO ILLUSTRATE PROBLEM. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE "CLUNKING" WAS A "NORMAL TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFT". THE "CLUNKING" HAS NOT INCREASED IN INTENSITY, BUT I AM NOT CONVINCED IT IS NORMAL OPERATION DUE TO 1)THE SHARPNESS OF THE JOLT AND 2} CO-WORKERS EXACT SAME MODEL TRUCK DOES NOT EXIBIT THESE SYMPTOMS. *AK
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTIONED, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO STALL WHILE TRYING TO ACCLERATE. BUT IT JUST REVVED THE ENGINE AND THE ABS BRAKING CAME ON WHICH ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
THE AUTOMATIC TRANS SLIPS WHEN COLD WHILE ENGAGING IN DRIVE. THE OTHER DAY WHEN I BACKED OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND PUT IT IN DRIVE, TRANSMISSION TOOK OVER 10 SECONDS TO ENGAGE. THE TRUCK CONTINUED BACKWARDS UNTIL I HIT THE BRAKES, AND WAITED FOR THE TRANSMISSION TO ENGAGE. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME WHEN IT GET'S ABOUT 40 DEGREES AND BELOW.
WHENEVER CONSUMER TRIES TO GET INTO THE VEHICLE OR TOUCH THE VEHICLE, HE WILL GET AN ELECTRICAL SHOCK. ALSO, WHEN DRIVING CAN HEAR A KNOCKING AND CLICKING NOISE, AND WHEN PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE THE NOISE GETS VERY LOUD. *AK
