WE WERE 245 MILES FROM HOME. 2ND TIME TRANSMISSION WENT OUT AT 95,509 MILES. WE WERE ABLE TO GET BACK HOME. REPAIR WAS $1272.63. IT WAS REPAIRED WITH UPGRADED PARTS. FAILED AGAIN AT 108,400 MILES. REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. PRESENT MILEAGE 131,930. SO FAR OK.*AK

IT ALSO DESTROYED MY RADIATOR WHICH I ALSO JUST REPLACED. IN TWO YEARS TIME I HAVE PUT CLOSE TO $6000 INTO THIS CAR. I CONTACTED FORD AND THEY TOLD ME TO WRITE TO YOU. I BELIEVE THE HEAD DESTROYED ALOT OF MY PARTS AND THAT IT SHOULD NOT HAVE BLOWN AT 94000 MILES. I ALSO KNOW OTHER FORDS WERE KNOWN FOR THIS AND FORD COVERED IT. TRANSAXLE WILL NOT ENGAGE AFTER COMING TO A STOP. L/F BRAKE PAD STAYS PARTIALLY ENGAGED RESULTING IN PREMATURE WEARING OF SAID PAD; LUCKILY, I WAS COMING TO A SLOW STOP WHEN IT GAVE OUT COMPLETELY. THIS PROBLEM WAS NOT ANALYZED UNTIL MY SECOND FRONT BRAKE JOB WITHIN 25 0R SO MONTHS. WITH WIPERS IN USE, ACTIVATING THE TURN SIGNAL IN EITHER DIRECTION CAUSES THE WIPERS TO STOP.THIS TENDS TO BRING ON A SLIGHT SENSE OF PANIC DURING A HEAVY RAIN. LIGHTS GO OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THIS SWITCH HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE AT MY EXPENSEAS HAVE ALL OTHER BEFORE MENTIONED PROBLEMS EXCEPT THE WIPER ISSUE. I HAVE BEEN UNEMPLOYED FOR 4 MONTHS AND CAN'T AFFORD FIXING THIS INCONVENIENCE. *AK

PREMATURE FAILURES OF THE FORD TAURUS AXOD TRANSMISSION APPEARS TO BE A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH CARS MANUFACTURED IN 1992 OR BEFORE. THE TRANSMISSION CLEARLY HAS A RELIABILITY PROBLEM THAT FORCES MANY OWNERS, INCLUDING MYSELF, TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION WHEN THE CAR HAS ONLY 50-60 THOUSAND MILES ON IT. I BELIVE NHTSA SHOULD INVESTIGATE THIS MATTER NOT ONLY AS A SAFETY PROBLEM, BUT ALSO TO FORCE FORD TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY AND COVER AT LEAST THE PARTIAL COST OF THE REPAIR.
