At times the vehicle accelerates by itself albeit I am not touching the gas pedal. While driving the vehicle at 45 mph, I take my foot off of the accelerator and the vehicle maintains the 45 mph speed or increases speed if I am driving down a hill or any downward gradient regardless of the angle of decent. When I try to stop the vehicle using the foot brake it continues to maintain speed and if I put the shift lever in neutral, while trying to stop, the RPM's increase from approximately 1500 rpm's to 3200 rpm's until the vehicle comes to a complete stop, and then, only after approximately five seconds do the RPM's begin to drop to 1000 rpm's. If I am driving the vehicle with cruise control and cancel the cruise control, the vehicle maintains the cruise control speed indefinitely, literally for miles thereafter. I wanted to give this vehicle to my daughter who has multiple sclerosis but it's too dangerous for her to drive with this acceleration problem. Do you have any recommendations for me???

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD TAURUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, THE THROTTLE CONTROL CABLE BECAME STUCK. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE DRIVER PLACED EXCESSIVE PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. THE CONTACT ASSISTED THE DRIVER WITH RELEASING THE STUCK CABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED. THE CONTACT CALLED AVIS FORD INC AT 248-355-7500 (29200 TELEGRAPH RD, SOUTHFIELD, MICHIGAN 48034) AND WAS INFORMED THAT AN UNKNOWN RECALL REPAIR WAS PREVIOUSLY PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE AND WOULD NOT BE DONE AGAIN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 115,000.

DRIVING IN INTERMITTENT RAIN SHOWERS AT 60-70MPH I HAD THE ENGINE CUT OUT AND DROPPED OUT OF CRUISE CONTROL. SPEEDOMETER AND TACHOMETER BOUNCING UP AND DOWN. THEFT AND ENGINE LIGHT WERE FLASHING ON AND OFF AT THE SAME TIME AS ENGINE WAS STALLING. THEN THE ENGINE REENGAGED AT 50-55 MPH AND CONTINUED ON NOW RESPONSIVE TO GAS PEDAL AND ACCELERATION. THIS REPEATED 5 - 8X IN THE SPAN OF 15 MILES AND SEVERAL TIMES PULLING OVER. WEATHER CLEARED AND DROVE ANOTHER 100 MILES WITH NO EVENTS. NEXT MORNING DRIVING KIDS TO SCHOOL AFTER 10 MINUTES OF RUNNING 25-40MPH THE SAME PROBLEM RECURRED BUT ENGINE DID NOT RECOVER AND COMPLETELY STALLED 3X IN 1 MILE. RESTARTED IMMEDIATELY EACH TIME. READING THROUGH POTENTIAL CAUSES THERE WERE NO LESS THAN 30 OTHER INDIVIDUALS DESCRIBING THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. THEFT LIGHT ON AND ENGINE STALLING WHILE DRIVING. VARIOUS SOLUTIONS PROPOSED FROM ELECTRICAL GROUNDS, BATTERY, ALTERNATOR, FUSE. MEGA FUSE, DPFE (DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE FUEL EXHAUST?) SENSOR, EGR (EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION) SYSTEM, PCM, ICR, AND SEVERAL OTHERS. NOT SURE WHICH IT MIGHT BE. GIVEN THERE ARE SO MANY AND THAT IT OCCURS IN POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS - AT HIGH SPEED AND NO WARNING - THIS SEEMS TO BE WORTHY OF AN INVESTIGATION OR RECALL.

THE GRAY CAP THAT HOLDS THE THROTTLE CABLE IN HAS BROKEN ON ONE SIDE AND THE CABLE IS SLIPPING OUT. IS THIS A RECALL PART?

WHILE DRIVING MY CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AND THE MORE I TRIED TO PUT ON MY BRAKES IT CONTINUES ON A BUSY 4 LANE STREET. I WAS ABLE TO TURN AT A TURN IN SLAMMING IN ON MY BRAKES AND THROWING MY SHAFT INTO PARK. IT WAS STILL SHAKING LIKE IT WANTED TO GO. I GOT IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC. THE CRUISE CONTROL THROTTLE CABLE INSERT SPLIT AND GOT CAUGHT ON THE THROTTLE BRACKET. IT COULD HAVE KILLED ME AND HURT A LOT OF PEOPLE. I CAN'T SELL THIS CAR LIKE THIS. I WANT FORD TO RECALL AND REIMBURSE ME FOR THIS TERRIBLE TRAUMATIC INCIDENT.

WHEN STOPPED AT STOP LIGHT, WHEN THE BREAKS ARE RELEASED, CAR JUMPS FORWARD. WHEN BACKING UP OUT OF GARAGE, CAR BACK-UP TOO FAST; MUST HOLD BREAKS AT ALL TIMES.

WHILE FLIPPED UPSIDE DOWN, THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO REV UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS POWERED OFF. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE CONTACT AND TWO PASSENGERS SUSTAINED UNKNOWN INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 177,000.

THE INSIDE PORTION OF THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE CAUGHT THE OUTSIDE OF GAURDRAIL CAUSING THE CAR TO STRADDLE THE TOP OF THE RAIL UNTIL THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE CAR CAUGHT ON A POST OF THE RAIL CAUSING THE CAR TO SLIDE SIDEWAYS UNTIL THE LEFT SIDE TIRES DUG INTO THE GROUND AND FLIPPED THE CAR COMPLETELY OVER WHERE IT CONTINUED TO TRAVEL SOUTH, ROLLING OVER AGAIN, COLLIDING WITH A WOOD POST THEN FINALLY COMING TO REST ON IT'S TIRES FACING NORTHWEST. WHEN I TURN MY STEERING WHEEL SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT, I CAN HEAR A TICKING SOUND ONCE OR TWICE, NOT SURE WHAT THAT IS, IT'S SCARY THOUGH. I WAS PULLING INTO A GAS STATION, GOING TO A GAS PUMP, WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE RPMS REVVED UP AND THE CAR ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN. I WAS ABLE TO AVOID THE GAS PUMP AND INSTEAD WENT OVER A RAMP WHICH CAUSED THE CAR TO GO AIRBORNE. I WENT THROUGH A FENCE AND HIT A POLE. THE IMPACT CAUSED ENOUGH DAMAGE ON THE CAR FOR THE CAR TO COME TO AN ABRUPT AND COMPLETE STOP. THE CAR HAS BEEN TOTALED. AFTER DISENGAGING THE CRUISE CONTROL BY TAPPING THE BRAKE (THE CRUISE CONTROL INDICATION TURNED OFF), THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO STAY AT THE PREVIOUSLY SET SPEED. I THEN TURNED OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH, WHICH HAD NO EFFECT. I IMMEDIATELY STARTED APPLYING HEAVY BRAKING UNTIL THE VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN TO ABOUT 5 MILES AN HOUR AND PUT THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION INTO PARK AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE IGNITION. ALL THE WHILE THE CAR WAS ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE BACK UP TO 55 MPH (THE PREVIOUSLY SET CRUISE CONTROL SPEED). THIS HAPPENED 2 MORE TIMES AND I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND TURN THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON AND THAT TEMPORARILY FIXED THE ISSUE. I ALSO LATER LEARNED TO BRIEFLY PRESS AND RELEASE THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR WHICH WORKED EVERY TIME. *TR

LEFT SIDE ELECTRICAL ALONG WITH COMPONENTS OF THE TURN SIGNAL SNAP BACK WHEN ATTEMPTING TO USE THIS SAFETY FEATURE MADE FOR VEHICLES. ON 06/15/2011 THE FRONT RIGHT BRAKES OF THE VEHICLE WENT OUT AND REQUIRED THE VEHICLE TO BE TOWED TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP. DURING THE DRIVE HOME WHICH WAS FROM A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 20 MILES I EXPERIENCED UNCONTROLLABLE STEERING AND ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE REPLACED BRAKE CALIPER BOLT CAME LOOSE AND WAS LOST ALONG THE HIGHWAY. ON 07/19/2011 AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE REPAIR SHOP THE A/C COMPRESSOR HAD FAILED AGAIN ALONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION AS THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING ROUGHLY DURING NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND WAS BLOWING HOT, BRAKES GRINDING, TRANSMISSION FLARE SHIFTING 2-3 SHIFT. REPAIR SHOP STATED SLIPPING AT 30MPH AND STATED REBUILT TRANSMISSION. DURING A WEEK PERIOD AROUND 07/22/2011 THE BRAKES WERE GRINDING AGAIN AND THE LOWER BALL JOINTS WERE INSTALLED. TRANSMISSION SLIPPING AROUND 30MPH AND AC WAS STILL BLOWING HOT. TRANSMISSION WAS REBUILT DURING THIS TIME FRAME DUE TO FLARE SHIFT 2-3 SHIFT. VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE SHOP EACH TIME. 08/17/2011 CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON, TRANSMISSION DOES NOT SHIFT, GRINDING NOISE WHEN ACCELERATE AND BRAKE, A/C BLOWS HOT. ON 08/31/2011 THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT, STATED NEED TO REPLACE ALL ELECTRONICS IN TRANSMISSION, ONE OR MORE SOLENOIDS ARE DEFECT. 09/12/2011 ODOMETER 112377 OUT O. ON 09/20/2012 MIL 140,768. BALANCED 55 SERIES AND ABOVE REAR RIGHT WHEELS BALANCED PARTS FOR FLAT WITH PLUG. VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED FOR POWER STEERING FLUID AND IT WAS NORMAL. THE VEHICLE JUMPS WHEN PUT IN REVERSE AND INTO GEAR AND SEEMS TO WANT TO STAY ON CRUISE CONTROL. I WILL POST FURTHER COMMENTS TO MY COMPLAINT AS THERE IS NOT ENOUGH SPACE FOR FACTS. *TR

ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2009, I WAS DRIVING MY PARENTS 2003 FORD TAURUS SEL AROUND TOWN, DOING LAST MINUTE SHOPPING FOR THANKSGIVING, WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR TOOK OFF, AS IF THE GAS PEDAL HAD GOTTEN STUCK. MY MOTHER WAS IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT AND I TOLD HER WHAT WAS HAPPENING. I TRIED STEPPING ON THE GAS PEDAL TO SEE IF IT HAD GOTTEN STUCK, BUT THAT DID NOT HELP AND I WAS GETTING VERY CONCERNED. I KEPT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND THEN PUT THE CAR INTO A LOWER GEAR AND THEN INTO NEUTRAL, ALL THE WHILE, THE ENGINE CONTINUED RACING, AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. IT TOOK ME ALMOST TWO BLOCKS TO GET THE CAR STOPPED. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE AUTO CLUB FOR A TOW TRUCK, AS THERE WAS NO WAY I WAS GOING TO TURN THE ENGINE BACK ON. I THEN CALLED MY FATHER AND TOLD HIM WHAT HAPPENED AND HE PROCEEDED TO COME DOWN TO WHERE WE WERE. THE TOW TRUCK CAME AND THE DRIVER WAS THE ONE WHO FOUND THAT THE PLASTIC HOUSING THAT HOLDS THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HAD BROKEN AND THE CABLE SLIPPED BACK AND WAS WEDGED-UP AGAINST THE SIDE OF THE BROKEN HOUSING. I TOOK PHOTOS OF THIS. THE CAR WAS TAKEN UP TO OUR MECHANIC. THE CRUISE CONTROL HAS NEVER BEEN USED. WE CONTACTED THE FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE WHO TOOK ALL THE INFORMATION AND GAVE US CASE NUMBER 0436723349. THEY TOLD US TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE PART REPLACED. MY PARENTS TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY ONLY OFFERED TO REPLACE THE PART; HOWEVER, WE WANTED SOMEONE TO WITNESS IT AND SEE WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE BEFORE THE PART WAS TAKEN OFF AND DISCARDED AND WE WOULD HAVE HAD NO WAY TO PROVE IT EVEN HAPPENED. IT HAPPENED ROUGHLY 5 TIMES IN THE WINTER OF 2010 AND 3-4 TIMES IN THE WINTER OF 2011. IT DID NOT HAPPEN IN 2012 DUE TO THE WARM WINTER CLIMATE, AT LEAST THAT IS MY GUESS. I ALSO REMEMBER IT HAPPENING WHEN IT WAS VERY COLD OUTSIDE. THE ONE TIME IT WAS AROUND 0 DEGREES. IT FELT LIKE THE PEDAL WOULD GET STUCK. THE ONLY WAY I COULD GET IT TO STOP WOULD BE TO AGGRESSIVELY KEEP PUSHING THE PEDAL AND THEN IT WOULD GET UNSTUCK. ONE TIME I LET IT GO TO SEE HOW FAR IT COULD SPEED UP ON IT'S OWN I GOT IT TO 50 MPH WITHOUT PUSHING THE PEDAL BEFORE I GOT NERVOUS AND WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO STOP. I'VE ALSO NOTICED IN THE PAST THAT THE PEDAL SOMETIMES WILL FEEL LIKE IT WILL GET STUCK BUT IN THOSE CASES THE CAR WON'T ACCELERATE ON IT'S OWN LIKE I EXPLAINED ABOVE. I BROUGHT ALL OF THIS TO THE DEALER'S ATTENTION BUT THEY WROTE ME OFF AND SAID IT COULD HAVE BEEN DUE TO THE COLD. I WAS DRIVING EASTBOUND ON I-90 (MASS. PIKE) IN MASSACHUSETTS, ABOUT 60 MILES OUTSIDE OF BOSTON, WITH MY FIANCEE IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. ROAD CONDITIONS WERE IDEAL. TEMPERATURE WAS IN THE HIGH 80S. SUN WAS OUT, ABOUT 4 P.M. IN THE AFTERNOON. SUDDENLY, THE RPMS WENT THROUGH THE ROOF, BUT THE CAR DID NOT SLOW OR SPEED. I TESTED AGAIN AND SAME THING HAPPENED. I SIGNALED RIGHT AND WAS ABLE TO MOVE OVER ONE LANE AND AGAIN ONTO THE SHOULDER. ONCE PARKED, THE CAR WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR. I JUST GOT REVVING IN PARK, DRIVE, REVERSE, LOWER GEARS, ETC. TRANSMISSION FAILURE. NO POWER TO THE GROUND. REPAIR COSTS CAME TO $2,000. I WOULD CONSIDER THIS A SAFETY PROBLEM SINCE I WAS NOT ABLE TO CONTROL THE SPEED OF MY CAR ON A BUSY HIGHWAY. I TOLD HIM NO ONE USES THE CRUISE CONTROL IN THAT CAR BECAUSE WE JUST GO IN TOWN AND THERE IS A RED LIGHT AT EVERY CORNER. HE STATED THAT HE HAD BEEN TO MANY OTHER FIRES JUST LIKE THIS ONE AND IT WAS ALWAYS THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH. ON MY 2003 FORD TAURUS SEL THE THROTTLE BODY STICKS CAUSING AN UNUSUALLY HIGH AMOUNT OF GAS PEDAL PRESSURE TO RELEASE IT AND ONCE IT RELEASES THE HIGH PEDAL PRESSURE APPLIED CAUSES A RAPID, DANGEROUS ACCELERATION OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS THE 2ND TIME THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED WITH THIS VEHICLE THE FIRST REPAIR WAS DONE BY THE FORD DEALER ON JANUARY 15, 2005 AND NOW IT IS OCCURRING AGAIN. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD TAURUS. WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATED AS THE CONTACT TURNED ONTO A ROAD. SHE ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE VEHICLE, BUT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. SHE WAS FINALLY ABLE TO SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER STATED THAT A CABLE HAD BECOME STUCK, WHICH CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE RECURRED APPROXIMATELY 3-4 WEEKS LATER. THE CONTACT PERFORMED THE PROCEDURE THE MECHANIC SHOWED HER IN REGARDS TO THE FAILURE AND CONTINUED DRIVING. THE CONTACT'S SON EXPLAINED THAT IT WAS THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE THAT WAS STUCK AND HE PROCEEDED TO DISCONNECT THE CABLE. FORD INFORMED HER THAT HER VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE CRUISE CONTROL RECALL.
