I was on my way to work. When I came to the stop sign to turn on the main road. I felt my car jerk. I thought it was weird and kept driving anyways. Then I noticed the resistance was gone from the gas pedal and it went straight to the floor. So I came to the stop light and kept my foot on the brake. When the light turned green and I had let go of the brakes. My car was accelerating on its own. I had to keep pumping the brakes so I wouldn't crash or hurt anyone. I managed to pull into a mechanic's shop and asked for help. The mechanic told me that it was my cruise control and that it wasn't disengaging. So he had to disconnect it from my car.

MY CAR WILL ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN WITHOUT ME PRESSING THE GAS. THIS HAPPENS AT LEAST 4 TIMES A WEEK WHILE I AM DRIVING AND HAPPENS WHEN I AM DRIVING BETWEEN 20 AND 50 MPH. I CAN MAKE THE ENGINE REV/ACCELERATION STOP BY QUICKLY TAPPING ON THE GAS PEDAL. I HAVE HAD THE CRUISE CONTROL DISCONNECTED BECAUSE MY MECHANIC THOUGHT THIS WAS PART OF THE PROBLEM BUT THE RANDOM SEF-ACCELERATION HAS CONTINUED AND SEEMS TO BE GETTING MORE FREQUENT. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON OFF AND ON FOR A FEW YEARS BUT HAS INCREASED IN FREQUENCY OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS.

WHILE IN PARK, RPMS SURGE AT 2000 UNTIL SHIFTING INTO DRIVE OR REVERSE. WHILE DRIVING, BARELY TOUCHING THE GAS PEDAL THE CAR GAINS SPEED QUICKLY WITHOUT HAVING TO USE THE PEDALS, HAVE TO KEEP MY FOOT ON THE BRAKES THE ENTIRE TIME TO KEEP IT STEADY - ITS ACCELERATING BY ITSELF AND TAKES A LOT OF EFFORT TO KEEP IT STOPPED. ALMOST CAUSED ME TO CRASH 3 TIMES TODAY OUT OF THE BLUE, ONCE WHILE AT A RED LIGHT WITH FOOT ON BRAKES THE RPMS RAN UP TO 3000 AND TRIED TO DRIVE THROUGH THE BRAKES, AND TWICE WHILE ON CITY STREETS IT ACCELERATED FROM 20 TO 50 IN SECONDS, CAUSING ME TO NEARLY MISS A VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. WHY MY MODEL VIN ISN'T INCLUDED IN THE RECALL I DON'T KNOW, BECAUSE LOOKING AT EVERYTHING ONLINE REGARDING THE 05 TAURUS MY CAR HAS ALL THE SAME ISSUES, WHICH WEREN'T DISCLOSED TO ME UPON PURCHASE BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL OWNER HAD NO IDEA. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MOVE OUT OF TRAFFIC, STOP THE VEHICLE, AND SHIFT INTO PARK; HOWEVER, THE RPMS WERE STILL HIGH. THE CONTACT TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, BUT THE RPMS REMAINED HIGH. THE CONTACT REPEATED THE STEPS THREE TIMES BEFORE DRIVING THE VEHICLE WHILE SLIGHTLY DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A CRUISE CONTROL CABLE FAILURE THAT WAS CAUSING THE THROTTLE TO STAY OPEN AND INADVERTENTLY ACCELERATING THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REPAIRS WERE UNKNOWN, BUT THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC INFORMED HER THAT HE PLACED AN UNKNOWN SUBSTANCE ON THE CABLE TO KEEP IT IN PLACE. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE FAILURE WOULD RECUR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THIS VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON A BUSY STREET. IT SLOWED DOWN,SPUTTERED,AND WOULD NOT MOVE.IT WAS IN GEAR (D) DRIVE. I WAS ABLE TO COAST IT OFF THE MAIN STREET TO SAFETY.THE ENGINE LIGHT AND THE CHECK TRANSMISSION ALERTS WERE ON. ACCELERATOR SEEMED STUCK AS WELL. THERE ARE ONLY 77,000 MILES. I AM TOLD THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS GONE. THERE ARE MORE THAT 170 COMPLAINTS CONCERNING THIS CAR. FORD NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND REPAIR THESE TRANSMISSIONS. SOME OWNERS HAVE BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY. I WAS FORTUNATE,I WAS ONLY ON A BUSY STREET. TURNING WAS ALSO DIFFICULT. NHTSA PLEASE DO SOMETHING BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED.

AS I TRIED TO SLOW FOR A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. I MANAGED TO BRING IT TO A STOP WITH THE BRAKE, BUT THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO REV AND I COULD BARELY KEEP IT FROM LURCHING FORWARD. I TAPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR AND THE ENGINE WENT BACK TO NORMAL. AT THE NEXT LIGHT, IT DID IT AGAIN. THIS TIME I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND THE ENGINE REVVED TO 4000 RPM. I TURNED THE CAR OFF, BUT WHEN I TURNED IT BACK ON, THE ENGINE WAS STILL AT 4000 RPM. I TAPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR A COUPLE OF TIMES AND IT WENT BACK TO NORMAL AGAIN.

I NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTICES BY USPS AND HAVE LIVED AT THE SAME ADDRESS SINCE 1984. I HAD THE TAURUS INTO TWO DIFFERENT FORD DEALERSHIPS FOR SERVICE AND NO ONE MENTIONED THE RECALL. AS I AM RETIRED MILITARY MY VEHICLES ARE ALWAYS KEPT IN TOP CONDITION FOR TRAVEL AT ANYTIME. I WAS REFUSED SERVICE ON THE TAURUS ( TOW DIFFERENT FORD DEALERSHIP HAD COMPLETED WORK ON THE TAURUS, WITHOUT TAKING CARE OF THE RECALL) THE SERVICE REP STATED THAT THE TIME FOR REPAIR HAD PASSED. NO WONDER FORD MOTOR COMPANY STOCK IS DOWN IN THE TIME PASSED, (I HAVE SERVICE BILLS THAT SHOW THAT TWO DIFFERENT FORD DEALERSHIPS AND I DO HAVE STARTING PROBLEMS WITH THE E85 FUEL. ABOUT A MONTH AGO WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, AFTER ACCELERATING, THE VEHICLE WANTED TO KEEP ACCELERATING. I MAINTAINED SPEED BY BRAKING. I LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD AND FOUND A CABLE DISCONNECTED GOING TO THE THROTTLE WHICH I BELIEVE IS PART OF THE CRUISE CONTROL. I RECONNECTED THE CABLE AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME. TODAY I WENT TO THE FORD DEALER TO DISCUSS THE ISSUE. THEY GAVE ME THE CONTACT INFO FOR FORD OWNER AND I OPENED A CASE. FORD SAID THERE IS CURRENTLY NO RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE. CURRENTLY THE CAR SEEMS OK BUT THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT AND IM NOT SURE IF THE CABLE WILL DISCONNECT AGAIN. I FIRST ATTEMPTED TO PUSH AND PULL ON THE GAS PEDAL THINKING IT WAS STUCK BUT NO SUCCESS, I THEN ATTEMPTED TO PULL OFF THE FREEWAY AND TURN THE ENGINE OFF BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP WHILE PUSHING THE BRAKE. I THEN PLACED THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND ATTEMPTED TO STOP, STILL UNABLE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. I SLOWED DOWN AS MUCH AS I COULD AND THREW THE CAR IN PARK, WITH THE ENGINE STILL ATTEMPTING TO GO! I IMMEDIATELY TURNED THE CAR OFF AND HAD AAA COME OUT TO ASSESS THE VEHICLE. I WAS DRIVING TO THE STORE DOWN CURVY, MOUNTAIN ROAD WHEN I SLOWED DOWN TO CROSS A RAILROAD TRACK. I WAS DRIVING AND COMING UP TO A 4-WAY STOP AT AN INTERSECTION. THERE WAS A TRUCK STOPPED AT THE SIGN AT THE INTERSECTION IN FRONT OF ME. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND WAS NEARLY STOPPED WHEN THE ENGINE OF MY CAR BEGAN REVVING ON ITS OWN. I PRESSED HARDER ON THE BRAKES BUT FELT THE CAR EDGING FORWARD STILL AND THOUGHT FOR A MOMENT I HAD LOST MY BRAKES. SINCE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL I PUT THE CAR IN PARK, STOPPING IT FROM RUNNING INTO THE TRUCK IN FRONT OF ME. WHILE MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING AT POSTED SPEED, ENGINE REVVED EXCESSIVELY AND NEEDED TO DO HEAVY BRAKING TO GET VEHICLE STOPPED. ON FRIDAY 8 JUNE, WHILE DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING IN BUFFALO, MN, SYMPTOMS OCCURRED AGAIN. I DON'T KNOW IF MY DAUGHTER TRIED TO USE THE CRUISE CONTROL THIS TIME. SHE WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR THE 8 MILES TO HOME AND PARK IT IN THE DRIVEWAY. SEVERAL HOURS LATER, WHEN I STARTED THE CAR, WHILE IN PARK, THE ENGINE RPMS WAS 3500. FORD DEALER ON ND REVIEW REPLACED IGNITION COIL ASSY, SPARK PLUGS, UPDATED PCM CODES, TIGHTENED TIE RODS, 4 WHEEL ALIGNMENT, REPLACED 2 FRONT TIRES, FUEL FILTER, FRONT OR REAR BRAKES WITH ROTOR REPLACEMENTS, OIL FILTER AND LUBE CHANGE AT COST OF $1681.82 TO OWNER. FORD DEALER AT PICK UP WOULD NOT PROVIDE WRITTEN GUARANTEE THAT RAPID ACCELERATION PROBLEM HAD BEEN FIXED OR ELIMINATED. MY SON'S SAFETY AT HANDS OF FORDS REFUSAL TO FIX PROBLEM. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR AND HAPPENS RANDOMLY AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS AND CONDITIONS. WHEN IT HAPPENS THE ENGINE REVS TO ABOUT 4,000 RPMS WHEN SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL BEFORE GOING TO NORMAL. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND DISCOVERED THAT AS OF MARCH 2012 THERE WERE OVER 395,000 COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS AND THAT THE NHTSA WAS INVESTIGATION. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND WELL DOCUMENTED. I AM A FORD FAN BUT AM VERY DISAPPOINTED THIS HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED PROPERLY ESPECIALLY IN THE WAKE OF THE TOYOTA RECALLS FOR SIMILAR PROBLEMS A FEW YEARS AGO. I CONTACTED THE NHTSA THIS MORNING TO DISCOVER THAT: NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: PE12005 "A SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT HAS NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED AT THIS TIME AND FURTHER USE OF AGENCY RESOURCES DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE WARRANTED. ACCORDINGLY, THIS INVESTIGATION IS CLOSED. THE CLOSING OF THIS INVESTIGATION DOES NOT CONSTITUTE A FINDING BY NHTSA THAT A SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT DOES NOT EXIST. I HAVE MULTIPLE TIMES WHERE MY CAR IS ACCELERATING ON ITS OWN AND HAVE TO PUT CAR IN NEUTRAL TO STOP IT. RPM'S ARE SO HIGH THE REV LIMITER KICKS IN AND AT LEAST 15-20 TIMES WHILE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WITH THE CAR AT IDLE, CAR WOULD ACCELERATE FAST WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE ALMOST HITTING CAR IN FRONT OF ME, ONCE AGAIN PUTTING IN NEUTRAL TO STOP IT, HAD IT LOOKED AT BY SERVICE CENTERS BUT NO FAULT CODES WERE FOUND AND WAS TOLD NOT REPAIRABLE IF NO CODE WERE FOUND BECAUSE THEY WOULD BE GUESSING FOR THE PROBLEM. AND I DID LOOK TO SEE IF THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE WAS ON OR OFF THE LINKAGE ASSEMBLY, BUT CABLE WAS ATTACHED OK AND HAD NOT FALLEN OFF LIKE OTHER REPORTS. *TR

SEEMED FINE HOWEVER CRUISE CONTROL NO LONGER WORKED. UPON INSPECTION LATER ON THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HAD BECOME DISCONNECTED. RECONNECTED CABLE, PROBLEM RECURRED IN RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD. RECONNECTED AGAIN AND AGAIN PROBLEM OF STUCK ACCELERATOR HAPPENED, AGAIN IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA. *TR

I WAS DRIVING AT 40 MPH DOWN THE ROAD WHEN TRAFFIC SLOWED DOWN. I RELEASED THE THROTTLE TO APPLY THE BRAKES AND THE ENGINE RPMS INCREASED AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN. I NARROWLY AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT BY APPLYING THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD AND DROVE INTO A PARKING LOT BEFORE SHUTTING THE VEHICLE OFF. UPON RESTARTING THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE RPM WAS AROUND 4,000 RPM AND WOULD NOT COME DOWN. AFTER PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES THE VEHICLES ENGINE RETURNED TO IDLE SPEED. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION I FOUND THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HAD BECOME DISCONNECTED FROM THE THROTTLE BODY. I ASSUME THAT THE CABLE WAS ABLE TO WEDGE THE THROTTLE OPEN AND BECAME UNSTUCK ONCE I DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES. THE PLASTIC END ON THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE IS NOT BROKEN BUT DOES FIT LOOSELY ON THE THROTTLE BODY WHEN I RECONNECTED IT. I HAVE APPLIED A PLASTIC ZIP TIE TO THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE TO KEEP IT FROM COMING OFF AGAIN. *TR

THIS IS THE 3RD TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME- AND EACH EXPERIENCE IS AS FRIGHTENING AS THE LAST. I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MILES AN HOUR AND THE ENGINE REVVED AND THE CAR SPED UP WITHOUT MY PRESSING THE GAS- I DID NOT HAVE MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL. I REACHED THE LIGHT, PUT THE CAR IN PARK, AT WHICH TIME THE ENGINE ACCELERATED HIGHER AND HIGHER. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND WHEN I TURNED IT BACK ON THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO REV HIGHER AND HIGHER. AFTER TURNING IT OFF AGAIN, I DECIDED IT WOULD BE OK TO MAKE IT THROUGH THE INTERSECTION, AT WHICH POINT THE CAR SPED UP TO 45 MPH WITHOUT MY PRESSING THE GAS AT ALL- IN FACT, I HAD TO PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES TO TRY AND SLOW DOWN AND AVOID HITTING ANOTHER VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I FINALLY HAD TO PULL OVER AND TURN THE CAR OFF FOR SEVERAL MINUTES BEFORE TURNING IT BACK ON- AND THEN IT WAS FINE. IT IS TERRIFYING TO FEEL SUCH LOSS OF CONTROL AND FEEL LIKE I COULD NOT SLOW DOWN. AFTER ACCELERATING WHILE DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY, MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN STUCK IN THE ACCELERATION STATUS. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES SINCE JANUARY AND THE MECHANIC HAS NO ANSWER. IN CITY, SPEEDS RAPIDLY INCREASE FROM 25-50 PLUS WITHOUT TOUCHING ACCELERATOR AND/OR FROM 50-TO 80 PLUS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. ONLY WAY TO STOP IT IS TO RIDE THE BREAK AND/OR TURN OFF THE VEHILCE. DEALER HAS ATTEMPTED TO IDENTIFY AND FIX THE PROBLEM TWICE WITH NO SUCCESS AND WAITING ON FORD TO IDENTIFY AND FIND A PERMANENT FIX. *JS

I WAS DRIVING APPROX 30 MILES AN HOUR WHEN THE CAR STARTED TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. I HAD TO PULL OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURN THE CAR OFF TO STOP THE ACCELERATION. PRESSING THE BREAK HAD NO AFFECT ON THE CAR AUTO ACCELERATING. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING VERY FREQUENTLY OVER THE PAST WEEK. NO WHEN IT STARTS TO ACCELERATE BY ITS SELF I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND IT ACCELERATES UP TO APPROX 4000 RPM, TO STOP THE ACCELERATION I PRESS THE GAS PEDAL AND RELEASE QUICKLY AND THE CAR SETTLES BACK DOWN, STOPPING THE ACCELERATION. THERE'S BEEN MANY TIMES WHEN I'VE ALMOST RAN INTO A CAR IN FRONT OF ME BECAUSE I COULD NOT STOP OR SLOW DOWN. INSTEAD OF STOPPING WHEN I APPLY THE BRAKES, THE ENGINE REVS UP AND SPEEDS UP ON ITS ON. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AND I'M AFRAID THAT I MAY CRASH INTO SOMEONE IN FRONT OF ME AT A STOP SIGN OR RED LIGHT. ALSO, EVEN WHEN I'M DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY OR A NORMAL STREET OR ROAD, THE CAR WILL SOMETIMES SPEED UP ON ITS ON EVEN WHEN I TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL.
