DRIVING ON A HIGH-SPEED HIGHWAY, WHEN WITHOUT WARNING (NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OR ANY OTHER NOTIFICATION), THE TRANSMISSION QUIT WORKING. I WAS LEFT UNABLE TO ACCELERATE OR EVEN MAINTAIN MY SPEED; AND I HAD TO COAST TO A STOP ON AN EXIT RAMP AS THE PORTION OF HIGHWAY THAT I WAS ON DID NOT HAVE SHOULDERS ON EITHER SIDE. IT WAS VERY DANGEROUS. THE TRAFFIC BEHIND ME WAS JUST AS ILL-PREPARED FOR THIS SUDDEN DECELERATION, AND I WAS POWERLESS TO DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN STEER TO RELATIVE SAFETY. IT APPEARS THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER'S SPLINES ARE NOT PROPERLY DESIGNED AND THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE ON THIS SPECIFIC MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR. THIS DEFECT SHOULD BE ATTENDED TO, ESPECIALLY SO THAT THERE IS NO INJURY OR LOSS OF LIFE IN THE FUTURE.

MY 2005 FORD TAURUS HAS A STRIPPED TORQUE CONVERTER SPLINE AFTER I INSPECTED IT CLOSELY. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW BECAUSE IT SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL OF THIS VEHICLE. IT IS ALSO COMMON IN OTHER SIMILAR FORD MODELS. IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD BECAUSE THE TORQUE CONVERTER SPLINE CAN STRIP OUT WITHOUT WARNING, LEAVING THE VEHICLE WITHOUT ANY POWER TO THE DRIVE WHEELS. THIS CAN BE ESPECIALLY HAZARD IN AN INTERSECTION WHEN A LIGHT TURNS RED, ON AT HIGH SPEED ON A HIGHWAY, WHICH WOULD RISK A HIGH-SPEED REAR END COLLISION. FORD HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS COMMON DEFECT. THERE ARE MANY INSTANCES OF THIS SAME FAILURE ON THE INTERNET BY OTHER OWNERS.THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER TO THE WHEELS AS I WAS IN AN INTERSECTION MAKING A LEFT TURN AT LOW SPEED ON A CITY STREET. THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD WHILE THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING AND THE TRANSMISSION IN DRIVE. VERY LUCKILY, THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A STOP CLEAR OF TRAFFIC. HOWEVER, THE OUTCOME COULD HAVE BEEN VERY DIFFERENT.

I WAS DRIVING AT A SPEED OF MAYBE 45 MILES AN HOUR AND I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS WHEN APPROACHING A RED LIGHT. MY CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE REALLY FAST. I TAPPED THE GAS HARD AND IT STOPPED. SINCE THEN IT DOES IT ALL THE TIME. NOW THE CAR IS HESITANT AND JERKING. THE TRANSMISSION WARNING LIGHT RECENTLY CAME ON AND WENT AWAY BUT THE ACCELERATION IS GETTING WORSE EACH DAY.

TAKATA RECALL TRANSMISSION STARTED SLIPPING AND THEN IT JUST WENT OUT. SO HAD IT FIXED AND IT COST ME OVER $ 2500. NOW A YEAR TO DATE 07/ 08/2017 IT STARTED DOING IT AGAIN. THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND CAN NOT AFFORD IT AGAIN. OH OF COURSE WHEN YOU TAKE IT IN IT WON'T DO IT. IT HAPPENS WHEN MOVING IN THE CITY BETWEEN LIKE 1ST AND 2ND. IT DOESN'T HAPPEN ALL THE TIME.

UPON RETURNING TO THE TAURUS IN A PARKING LOT, THE TRANSMISSION DID NOT ENGAGE. THE GEAR SHIFT MOVED AS FREELY AS IT NORMALLY DOES, BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT GO INTO EITHER REVERSE OR DRIVE. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED ACROSS TOWN. OUR MECHANIC TOLD ME TODAY THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER WAS STRIPPED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED AND THAT METAL PARTICLES FROM THE STRIPPED OUT PIECES HAD TO BE CLEANED OUT. TOTAL COST WILL BE ABOUT $1800. MECHANIC SAID THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH TAURUSES AND WINDSTARS OF THAT TIME, AND A LOOK AT THE COMPLAINTS ON THIS PAGE CONFIRMS IT. DISAPPOINTING THAT FORD WILL NOT RECALL FOR WHAT IS OBVIOUSLY A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. MY INCIDENT OCCURRED AT 88K MILES.

2005 FORD TAURUS WITH 53,000 MILES HAS A PROBLEM THAT THE ENGINE ACCELERATES ON IT'S OWN WHILE DRIVING. THE ENGINE ALSO REVS UP TO 4000RPM IN PARK ON ITS OWN. VEHICLE MUST BE TURNED OFF AND THE ACCELERATOR MUST BE PRESSED HARD TO "RESET" THE PROBLEM. BASED ON RESEARCH ONLINE AND PREVIOUS INVESTIGATION BY THE NHTSA, THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON COMPLAINT AND ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL YEAR.

I SAW A RECALL NOTICE IN THE NEWS: 06N07 7807 FOR MY VEHICLE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE PCM RECALIBRATING FOR THE FLEX FUEL. I NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTICES BY USPS AND HAVE LIVED AT THE SAME ADDRESS SINCE 1984. I HAD THE TAURUS INTO TWO DIFFERENT FORD DEALERSHIPS FOR SERVICE AND NO ONE MENTIONED THE RECALL. AS I AM RETIRED MILITARY MY VEHICLES ARE ALWAYS KEPT IN TOP CONDITION FOR TRAVEL AT ANYTIME. I WAS REFUSED SERVICE ON THE TAURUS ( TOW DIFFERENT FORD DEALERSHIP HAD COMPLETED WORK ON THE TAURUS, WITHOUT TAKING CARE OF THE RECALL) THE SERVICE REP STATED THAT THE TIME FOR REPAIR HAD PASSED. NO WONDER FORD MOTOR COMPANY STOCK IS DOWN IN THE TIME PASSED, (I HAVE SERVICE BILLS THAT SHOW THAT TWO DIFFERENT FORD DEALERSHIPS AND I DO HAVE STARTING PROBLEMS WITH THE E85 FUEL. I AM WONDERING IF OTHER CONSUMERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE LACK OF NOTICES FOR RECALL. SINCE IT WAS EASTER SUNDAY I HAD NO WHERE TO TOW IT TOO. I'VE BEEN DOING SOME RESEARCH AND LOOKS LIKE A TORQUE CONVERTER NOT 100 PERCENT SURE UNTIL I DIG INTO IT. BUT I DID BUY THIS CAR USED AND HAVE NOT HAD A PROBLEM IN 2 YEARS, GOT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW I WAS 1600 MILES OVER THE LIMIT SO NO WARRANTY. ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 16, 2014, I WAS DRIVING ON US HWY 206 IN FLANDERS, NJ, WHEN MY CAR STOPPED RESPONDING TO THE ACCELERATOR. THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING, BUT PRESSING DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL DID NOTHING. I QUICKLY MANEUVERED THE CAR TO THE SHOULDER, ALMOST CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. THE CAR WOULDN'T MOVE IN ANY GEAR, EVEN REVERSE, HOWEVER, NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE ENGINE AS IT WAS STILL RUNNING. I WAS TOWED HOME AND RESEARCH THE PROBLEM. APPARENTLY, THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MANY OTHER FORD TAURUS OWNERS WHEN THE SPLINES ON THE TORQUE CONVERTER FAIL, RENDERING THE TRANSMISSION INOPERABLE AND THE CAR SUDDENLY UNRESPONSIVE WHEN PRESSING ON THE ACCELERATOR. I'M LUCKY I WASN'T HIT FROM BEHIND ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED. A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM AND REPLACE THE FAULTY TORQUE CONVERTER. ON JULY 8, 2014, FORD ISSUED A RECALL FOR THE FORD TAURUS, AND OTHER MODELS, FOR THE SAME PROBLEM, BUT MY YEAR WASN'T PART OF THE RECALL. WHY? IN JANUARY 2012, FORD ISSUED A RECALL FOR FAULTY TORQUE CONVERTERS FOR 450K SUVS AND VANS. BUT THE TAURUS WASN'T, AGAIN, WHY? WHILE DRIVING WITH MY TWO YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE CAR ON THE FREEWAY, I NOTICED THAT I SEEMED TO KEEP PICKING UP SPEED EVEN AFTER I HAD TAKEN MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL. I FIRST ATTEMPTED TO PUSH AND PULL ON THE GAS PEDAL THINKING IT WAS STUCK BUT NO SUCCESS, I THEN ATTEMPTED TO PULL OFF THE FREEWAY AND TURN THE ENGINE OFF BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP WHILE PUSHING THE BRAKE. I THEN PLACED THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND ATTEMPTED TO STOP, STILL UNABLE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. I SLOWED DOWN AS MUCH AS I COULD AND THREW THE CAR IN PARK, WITH THE ENGINE STILL ATTEMPTING TO GO! I IMMEDIATELY TURNED THE CAR OFF AND HAD AAA COME OUT TO ASSESS THE VEHICLE. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY GOING ABOUT 65 MILES PER HOUR AND THE CAR JUST BEGAN TO SPEED UP AND THE PEDDLE LEFT FROM MY FOOT AND I HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND PUNCH ON THE PEDDLE TO TRY TO STOP IT FROM GOING TO 100. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES EVEN AT A 25-35 MPH PACE. THE CAR WILL JUST TAKE OFF. I AM CURRENTLY NOT ABLE TO DRIVE THIS CAR DUE TO MY SAFETY. I BOUGHT MY TAURUS 2005 SE AT THE END OF FEBRUARY 2012 AT MILEAGE OF APPROXIMATELY 81,600. IT HAS OCCURRED TWICE ALREADY THAT THE CAR KEPT ACCELERATING AFTER I FULLY RELEASED THE GAS PEDAL. I WAS ON VACATION DRIVING UP THE COAST OF CALIFORNIA AND I NOTICED IT WAS BECOMING INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO BRAKE MY VEHICLE AND MY TACHOMETER WOULD NOT PREDICTABLY FALL AS I LET OFF THE GAS. AFTER PUTTING IT INTO NEUTRAL I NOTICED THE CAR WOULD NOT GOES LESS THAN 2000 RPM ON THE TACHOMETER. THEN IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THE CAR WAS ACCELERATING INDEPENDENTLY OF MY INPUT THROUGH THE GAS. I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT AND COASTED IN NEUTRAL, PARKED AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. AS I HAVE SOME AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC EXPERIENCE, I FIGURED SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH THE THROTTLE LINKAGE OR SOMETHING WAS STUCK IN THE THROTTLE PLATE. ON INSPECTION, I NOTICED THE CRUISE CONTROL LINKAGE AND SLID OFF. I THEN WENT TO RADIOSHACK AND BOUGHT SOME SMALL ZIP TIES AND ZIP TIED THE LINKAGE IN PLACE. IT IS TO THIS DAY HELD IN PLACE WITH ZIP TIES AND I HAVEN'T HAD ANY PROBLEMS SINCE (108,000 MILES CURRENTLY). I SAW THAT THE NHTSA WAS INVESTIGATING THESE VEHICLES FOR THE SAME COMPLAINTS AND THOUGHT I'D REPORT MY INCIDENT IN HOPES OF HELPING OTHERS. *TR

FIRST, I WANT TO SAY THAT THIS VEHICLE IS WELL MAINTAINED AND SERVICED ON A REGULAR BASIS. IT WAS A PLEASANT SUMMER DAY BUT HAD MORE OF A AUTUMN FEELING WHETHER. I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE IN EAST TENNESSEE, I HAD JUST MERGE ONTO THE INTERSTATE AND HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR MAYBE 10 MINUTES. I SLOWED DOWN FOR TRAFFIC TO ABOUT 40 MPH AS I CREST A HILL. WHEN I STEPPED BACK ONTO THE GAS (GOING DOWN HILL NOW), I FELT THE CAR SHIFT INTO 4 GEAR. I THEN FELT, AND HEARD A POP SIMILAR TO A BLOWOUT, BUT IN REALITY IT WAS THE CAR SLIDING OUT OF GEAR. I HAD ONLY MANAGED TO REACH ABOUT 50MPH WHEN THE CAR STOP ACCELERATING, (I PUT ON MY HAZARDS) I WAS TRYING TO COAST TO A SAFE PLACE, BUT THE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS MADE NO PLACE TO PULL OFF. WITHIN 5 SECONDS, A CAR TRAVELING BEHIND ME WAS BUMPED BY A TRACTOR TRAILER AND WAS KNOCKED INTO ME. MY FORD MECHANIC SAYS THE TRANSMISSION IS SHOT AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WENT OUT (WAS THAT THE POPPING NOISE? I WONDER.) $3500 TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE GOOGLE 05 TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS AND HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS OVER 500 PROBLEMS THAT HAVE TO DO WITH. I DON'T KNOW WHETHER FORD WAS TRYING TO SAVE A FEW DOLLARS, OR IF THEY WERE TRYING TO SAVE FUEL MILEAGE, BUT THIS TRANSMISSION IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM. I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER FORD IF THIS PROBLEM DOESN'T GET RESOLVE BY FORD RECALLING THESE TRANSMISSIONS. MY 2005 FORD TAURUS SEL WITH 90,XXX MILES ON IT HAD ITS TRANSMISSION FAIL. IT IS STILL IN THE SHOP BEING REPAIRED, BUT AT THIS POINT THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND PUMP NEED TO BE REPLACED. I WAS TOLD BY THE FORD SERVICE MANAGER THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT FORD IS AWARE OF BUT IS NOT DOING NOTHING ABOUT. I WILL BE OUT A MINIMUM OF $1,800 FOR A PROBLEM FORD KNOWS ABOUT, BUT DOES NOTHING TO HELP THEIR CUSTOMERS. ALL OF MY MILES ARE INTERSTATE MILES AND THE CAR HAS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF IN EVERY WAY. I WAS DRIVING DOWN MY SIDE STREET ROAD AND IT WAS LIKE THE CAR WENT INTO NEUTRAL. IT WILL NOT GO INTO ANY GEAR. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO COAST INTO MY DRIVEWAY. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WITH NO PREVIOUS INDICATIONS OF TROUBLE THE CAR SUDDENLY STARTED TO SLOW DOWN AND THE RPM WENT UP. HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND TOLD THEM WHAT HAPPENED AND HE STATED THAT THIS WAS A COMMON FAILURE WITH THIS VEHICLE. THE CALLED LATER THAT DAY AND STATED THAT THE CAR NEEDS A NEW TRANSMISSION THAT IT HAS NO PRESSURE AND THAT THE COULD PUT IN A REMANUFACTURED ONE IN CHEAPER THAN REPAIRING THIS ONE THE TOTAL WILL BE IN HE AREA OF $3,100.00 I HAVE GOOGELED THIS AND HAD OVER 147,000 HITS. I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION OF MY TAURUS LESS THAN ONE MONTH AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE INSPECTED AND THE TRANS FLUSHED AT A DEALERSHIP AS PART OF MY LEASE-END PURCHASE OPTION (I LEASED THE CAR FOR 3 YEARS PRIOR TO PURCHASING IT). THE CAR WAS PAST THE WARRANTY AT 64,500 MILES AND I DID NOT PURCHASE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. I RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG. AFTER RUNNING THEIR DIAGNOSTIC TEST, I WAS TOLD THAT SOMETHING HAD FAILED IN THE TRANSMISSION BUT THEY WERE NOT SURE WHAT FAILED. THEY OFFERED TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM BY BREAKING DOWN THE TRANS AT A MINIMUM OF 10 HOURS LABOR AT $88.00 AN HOUR. I CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR SOME ASSISTANCE AND WAS DENIED BECAUSE THEY HAD NO RECORD OF MY CAR EVER BEING REPAIRED AT ANY DEALERSHIP DURING THE LIFE OF MY LEASE. I HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH MY VEHICLE'S OPERATION PRIOR TO THE TRANSMISSION BEING FLUSHED, SO THERE WAS NO REASON TO TAKE IT IN FOR REPAIRS. I HAD MY OIL CHANGED EVERY 3000 TO 5000 MILES AND ALL FLUIDS CHECKED ON A REGULAR BASIS (NOT AT THE DEALERSHIP). I TOOK MY CAR TO A LICENSED TRANSMISSION SHOP AND HAD THE TRANS REBUILT FOR $1,200.00 THE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THE FAILED PART WAS A BOOST VALVE IN THE VALVE BODY. THEY REBUILT THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND INSTALLED A NEW OVERHAUL KIT AND THE BOOST VALVE. EIGHT DAYS AFTER PICKING UP MY CAR, I HAD TO RETURN TO THE TRANSMISSION SHOP BECAUSE THE CAR WAS HARD TO START, THE CHECK TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON CONTINUOUSLY AND THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON. THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED ME THAT THESE PROBLEMS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TRANS BUT WAS THE MLPS (MANUAL LEVER POSITION SENSOR) WHICH I HAD THEM REPLACE AT A COST OF $75.00. I WAS TOLD BY THE TECHNICIAN THAT THIS SENSOR HAD GONE BAD AND CAUSED MY INITIAL TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. THIS WAS A SMALL, PLASTIC PART THAT THE DEALERSHIP MISSED SOMEHOW DURING THEIR SO-CALLED INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE. *TR

I HAVE ISSUES WITH THIS CAR WHEN THE TEMPERATURE FALLS BETWEEN 20 AND 35 DEGREES WITH A COATING OF SLUSH OR SNOW FROM 1/4 OF AN INCH UP TO 5 INCHES. THE VEHICLE NEEDS TO BE TRAVELING AT 40 TO 65 MPH AND USUALLY ON A STRAIGHT AWAY SUCH AS THE THRUWAY. SOMETIMES WHEN THIS CAR HAS ISSUES I GET A THUMP FROM THE REAR AXLE AND THE VEHICLE SHIFTS VERY HARD BETWEEN 3RD AND 4TH GEAR. IT'S AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.. ON THE 1ST START OF THE DAY (EVERY DAY), FOR ONE-TWO MINUTES, WHEN I PUSH DOWN ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR WILL MOVE SLIGHTLY FORWARD. THERE IS A CLUNKING NOISE FROM THE ENGINE AREA, AND THE RPMS DECREASE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS PRESSED. THIS OCCURS IN PARK OR NEUTRAL.
