The contact owns a 2006 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving at an undisclosed speed and attempting to make a left turn, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power before stalling. The vehicle continued to roll forward before the driver was able to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. Upon restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality; however, the contact stated that failure reoccurred three additional times. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the braking system. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V413000 (Power Train). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 165,000.

Vehicle is now on 2nd transmission the original transmission failed around 60000 miles Ford originally put a brand new transmission in it for previous owner documentation was provided when we purchased the vehicle since move unknown where it's at now but this transmission has only 67000 miles on it experiencing same problems sometimes it will slip between 2nd and 3rd year other times it will slip between 1st and 2nd year sometimes they won't let it go over drive other times he gets stuck In overdrive no rhyme no reason for why it does what it does it just seems to do what it wants when it was but it really sucks when you're on the highway driving 75 mile an hour and decided to come out of overdrive and get stuck in 2nd gear so you have to slow down in front of everybody and it kind of forces you to do so that could easily get someone killed Going from 75 mile an hour to stuck in 2nd year limited speed very quickly with no brake lights Original transmission apparently has something to do with the torque converter or non hearted metals I'm not exactly sure because we were not in possession of owning the vehicle when it was replaced

Splines on Torque converter stripped out causing vehicle to just rev up and slow down to a stop. Car never moved again, had I been going up a large hill or something this could have been VERY VERY bad, because it wasn't until I was stopped that I realized it was the transmission having problems. After a bit of research and $500 in parts. I did the work myself. I find that the material inside of the torque converter is way softer than that on the input shaft causing the torque converter to strip out? How do they not have to fix that? This has been going on for over a decade! Why does someone have to die before they are responsible for something they know has a problem!

AROUND 6PM I WAS DRIVING DOWN A RESIDENTIAL STREET (25 MILES SPEED), IN MOTION, ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR JUST TURNED OFF. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO STEER TO THE SHOULDER. I NOTICED ALL DASHBOARD LIGHTS ON, MY GAS PEDAL WAS NOT WORKING, BUT THE A/C WAS STILL WORKING AND THE RADIO. SO I KNOW IT WASNT MY 1 YEAR OLD BATTERY. I WAITED FOR 30 SECONDS AND TURNED THE KEY AND IT RESTARTED AGAIN. MY FIANCE, OUR 4 CHILDREN AND I WERE IN THE CAR AT THE TIME. 70% OF MY DRIVING IS FREEWAY..THIS IS OUR ONLY CAR AND IM DEATHLY AFRAID OF THIS HAPPENING WHILE IM ON FREEWAY. I BELIEVE THE ENGINE IS FAULTY ON THIS YEAR/MODEL/MAKE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD TAURUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO 40 MPH ON ITS OWN AND WHILE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED. WHEN THE CONTACT PLACED THE GEAR SHIFTER INTO THE NEUTRAL POSITION, THE RPMS INCREASED FROM 200,000 TO 300,000. THE IGNITION WAS SHUT OFF AND THE GEAR SHIFTER WAS PLACED INTO PARK. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED, THE RPMS INCREASED TO 300,000. THE IGNITION WAS SHUT OFF A THIRD TIME AND RESTARTED, AND THE RPMS INCREASED TO 100,000. THE FAILURE RECURRED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 118,320.

FOR THE PAST YEAR OUR CAR HAS HAD MOMENTS OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION WITHOUT EXPLANATION. INITIALLY, TURNING THE CAR OFF AND THEN RESTARTING IT WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM. AS OF JUNE OF THIS YEAR, SUCH WAS NOT THE CASE. WE STOPPED AND TURNED THE CAR OFF, BUT WHEN RESTARTED IT IMMEDIATELY ACCELERATED AGAIN (WITHOUT ANY PRESSURE TO THE GAS PEDAL). OUR MECHANIC HAS LOOKED AT THE CAR TWICE AND HAS NOT IDENTIFIED ANYTHING SPECIFIC. HE HAS MADE SEPARATE REPAIRS HOPING THIS WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM, BUT AS OF TODAY, OCTOBER 26, 2014, IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN. I PURCHASED A 2006 FORD TAURUS ON JUNE 24TH, 2012. THE TAURUS WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND IT RAN WONDERFULLY, FOR THE FIRST SEVEN MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP. HOWEVER, IN NOVEMBER OF 2012, THE CAR BEGAN RANDOMLY SHUTTING OFF, SOMETIMES WHILE I WAS DRIVING. IT WOULD HAPPEN SPORADICALLY AND I THOUGHT IT WAS A PROBLEM THAT COULD BE FIXED. HOWEVER, AFTER TAKING IT TO A FORD DEALERSHIP ON TWO DIFFERENT OCCASIONS, NO MECHANIC IS ABLE TO FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM. THE REASON BEING THAT SINCE IT HAPPENS SPORADICALLY, NO ONE CAN DUPLICATE IT NOR IS THERE ANY SAVED CENSOR ABNORMALITIES. I HAVE REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP, HOPING THAT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, IT HAS NOT. SOMETIMES IT WILL HAPPEN UP TO SIX TIMES IN ONE DAY WHILE I'M GOING AS FAST AS 50 M.P.H. I REFUSE TO DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY BECAUSE I FEAR FOR MY LIFE SINCE THE CAR SHUTS OFF WITHOUT WARNING. SOMETIMES THE CAR WILL TURN BACK ON AND OTHER TIMES, I WILL HAVE TO TURN THE ENGINE OFF AND RE-TURN ON THE CAR. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I OWN A 2006 FORD TAURUS SEL 12V, I WAS DRIVING WHEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN, ALL OF THE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD (LIKE ABS, BRAKE LIGHT,) LIGHTED UP LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE AND THEN I LOST ALL POWER TO THE ENGINE. I HIT THE GAS PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES WITH NO RESPONSE BUT IN ABOUT 5-8 SECONDS LATER, THE CAR STARTED UP BY ITSELF WITH AN ABRUPT AND VIOLENT JERK FORWARD. IT WAS ALMOST AS IF I TURNED THE KEY IN THE IGNITION TO THE OFF POSITION AND THEN QUICKLY BACK ON .. WHILE I WAS SITTING AT A RED LIGHT, I NOTICED A WHOLE LOT OF WEIRD STUFF GOING ON. AFTER STOPPING FOR A TRAFFIC LIGHT I TRIED TO PROCEED AND, AFTER REACHING ROUGHLY 25 MILES PER HOUR, FORWARD PROGRESS STOPPED AND THE ENGINE REVVED FREELY. THE TRANSMISSION HAD COMPLETELY FAILED WITH NO ABILITY TO MOVE THE CAR. LUCKILY I WAS AT A LOW SPEED AND COULD SAFELY GET OUT OF THE WAY OF UNSUSPECTING TRAFFIC. THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR. IF THIS HAPPENED AT HIGHWAY SPEED, OR ANY OTHER NUMBER OF DANGEROUS DRIVING INSTANCES, THE OCCUPANTS OF THE VEHICLE WOULD MOST DEFINITELY BE PLACED IN A SITUATION WHERE INJURY OR EVEN DEATH WERE POSSIBLE. I HAVE A 2006 FORD TAURUS AND WITHIN THE PAST COUPLE OF MONTHS IT WILL DIE WHILE SITTING AT A REDLIGHT. I HAVE TO TURN OFF THE IGNITION AND RESTART THE CAR AND THAT USUALLY SOLVES THE PROBLEM. THIS HAS HAPPENED ABOUT 6 TIMES IN THE PAST 2 MONTHS. TODAY, HOWEVER, IT STALLED AT A REDLIGHT AND I RESTARTED BUT AS I CONTINUED DRIVING, THE RPM WOULD DROP RAPIDLY WHEN I HIT THE BREAKS AND IT ACTED LIKE IT WOULD DIE. I CONTINUED DRIVING AND WAS GOING ABOUT 45 MILES AN HOUR AND ALL OF THE SUDDEN ALL THE ODOMETERS DROPPED TO ZERO AND EVERYTHING ON THE DASHBOARD WENT OUT. THIS WAS VERY DANGEROUS. WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A GARAGE NEARBY AND THE OWNER SAID "THE TRANSMISSION IS COMPLETELY SHOT". WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED AGAIN TO PRECISION TRANSMISSION IN WHITEVILLE, NC. THEY NOTIFIED US THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER IN THIS TAURUS IS DEFECTIVE. THE SHOP OWNER ALSO TOLD ME THAT THERE WERE 3 OTHER TAURUSES ON THE LOT TO BE REPAIRED AT THE SAME TIME. THE SHOP OWNER KNEW EXACTLY WHAT WAS WRONG WITH OUR CAR BEFORE THEY EVEN LOOKED AT IT BECAUSE SHE SAID THAT THE METAL USED IN THE TORQUE CONVERTERS IN SEVERAL YEARS OF TAURUS MAKING WAS DEFECTIVE. I WAS DRIVING DOWN INTERSTATE 1-96 IN MICHIGAN. WHILE PASSING A SEMI-TRUCK, WE WERE GOING 70 MPH. THE 2006 FORD TAURUS SE I WAS DRIVING FAILED TO ACCELERATE. I LAID ON THE GAS PEDAL, BUT IT ACTED LIKE THE CAR WAS STUCK IN NEUTRAL. THE ENGINE ROARED, AND THE RPM'S SOARED TO OVER 6,000. WE WERE JUST COASTING TO A STOP, AND WERE NEARLY REAR ENDED FROM BEHIND. WE GOT INTO THE RIGHT LANE, NEARLY HITTING THE TRUCK WE WERE TRYING TO GET OVER FOR. IT TOOK EVERYTHING I COULD DO TO GET THE CAR OVER INTO THE RIGHT LANE. THE CAR DIED JUST AS I GOT IT OVER, STILL CLOSE TO BEING HIT BY TRAFFIC WHIZZING BY. I TURNED IT OFF AND THEN RESTARTED. THE ENGINE STARTED, BUT WE COULD NOT GO INTO DRIVE. AAA HAD IT TOWED TO A NEARBY SHOP IN SOUTH LANSING. THEY TOLD ME THE NEXT DAY THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD BEEN "SHOT". THE TRANNY FLUID WAS BURNED BADLY. THEY SAID I NEEDED IT TOTALLY REPLACED AT A COST OF NEARLY $4,000. I HAD NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS BEFORE THIS WITH THE CAR. AND THERE WERE NO WARNING SIGNS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE. THE MECHANIC SAID IT WAS A "SUDDEN FAILURE" OF THE TRANSMISSION. HE SAID HE HAD SEEN OTHER FORD TAURUS'S WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS. THE CAR ONLY HAS 65,000 MILES ON IT. I CALLED FORD AND WAS TOLD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP. WE DID THAT AND WERE GIVEN THE SAME RESULT. I AM COMPLAINING BECAUSE I FEEL FORD NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF STORIES LIKE THIS ONLINE REGARDING THE TRANSMISSION IN THE 05, 06 TAURUS. WILL IT TAKE SOMEONE GETTING HURT BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE? I FEEL I AM VERY LUCKY TO BE ALIVE. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING A FORD ANYMORE. A RECALL SHOULD BE MADE SO PEOPLE ARE AWARE THIS COULD HAPPEN. I NEVER EVEN KNEW THERE WERE ISSUES WITH THESE TRANSMISSION/TORQUE CONVERTERS UNTIL I DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE. I JUST PURCHASED (1/23/2010) A USED 2006 FORD TAURUS SE, 3.0L VEHICLE WITH 62,800 MILES. AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE THE CRUISE CONTROL DID NOT WORK (WOULD NOT ENGAGE) AND I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER (PHILLIPSBURG/STATELINE HYUNDAI) THEY WOULD HAVE ME RETURN TO REPAIR IT AS SOON AS THE PARTS ARRIVED. AT APPROXIMATELY 6:00 PM ON 1/26/2010), I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT 35 MPH ON AIRPORT ROAD/SOUTH WHEN I NOTICED THE LIGHT AHEAD TURNED YELLOW. I RELEASED THE ACCELERATOR AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO MAINTAIN SPEED. (I HAD NOT TURNED ON THE CRUISE CONTROL AND THERE WERE NO INDICATIONS IT WAS ON). I THEN STEPPED ON THE BRAKE AND TO MY AMAZEMENT THE CAR ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE. I DEPRESSED THE BRAKES FURTHER, BUT THE ENGINE REVVED HIGHER TO MAINTAIN SPEED AND I WENT THRU THE RED LIGHT! ATTEMPTING TO STOP THE CAR, AS ANOTHER TRAFFIC LIGHT WITH STOPPED CARS WAS IMMEDIATELY AHEAD, I HAD TO SWERVE TO THE RIGHT TURN LANE AND WENT THRU ANOTHER RED LIGHT BARELY AVOIDING CROSSING TRAFFIC. NOT THINKING TO TURN OFF THE IGNITION, I DEPRESSED THE PARKING BRAKE, CONTINUED TO HIT THE MAIN BRAKES AND THE CAR BEGAN TO SLOW (SPEED) ALTHOUGH THE ENGINE REVVED UNCONTROLLABLY. I FINALLY PULLED TO THE SIDE AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. I ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE CAR AND DURING 4 SUCCESSIVE TRIES IT IMMEDIATELY REVVED TO OVER 4,000 RPM. ON THE 5TH TRY THE START WAS NORMAL AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME. I AM TAKING THE CAR TO THE DEALER TOMORROW MORNING TO HAVE THE PROBLEM DIAGNOSED AND CORRECTED IMMEDIATELY! IN THE LAST 30 DAYS, I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO ME AT LEAST ONCE A DAY. I AM DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, TRAVELING APPROX. 60 MPH, AND ALL OF SUDDEN MY RPMS SHOOT UP TO OVER 4000 AND MY CAR ACCELERATES BY ITSELF. THEN, WHEN MY CAR IS RUNNING IN IDLE, THE RPMS ARE OVER 5000 AND IT SOUNDS AS IF SOMEONE HAS THE ACCELERATION PUSHED TO THE FLOOR. THEN THERE ARE TIMES WHEN I AM DRIVING, INCREASING MY SPEED GRADUALLY, AND MY RPMS WILL BE STUCK AT 2000 AND MY CAR WILL NOT GO FASTER THAN 30-40 MILES PER HOUR, WHICH IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ON THE INTERSTATE WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC. WHILE DRIVING TO FAA CLASS IN THE MORNING ABOUT 7:30. MY CAR(2006 YEARS FORD TAURUS, 86,000MILES) STOPPED ON THE ROAD(104TH WESTBOUD 100YARDS FROM S.PENN AVENUE). AND POLICEMAN PUSHED MY CAR WITH HIS CAR OFF THE ROAD . I CALLED GEICO WHO THEN TOWED IT TO THE SERVICE CENTER. THE DIAGNOSIS WAS TRANSMISSION FAILURE AND THE COST WAS $3,400 TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. BUT I HAD IT TOWED TO A DIFFERENT SHOP. THEY ARE FIXING MY CAR AND REQUESTED 1800$(1YEAR WARRANTY) AND THEY SAID THIS A VERY STRANGE CASE. I'M SPENDING MONEY FOR 6MONTH FAA TRAINING FEE/HOUSING/DAUGHTERS SCHOOL AND CAMP FEE/FAMILY'S FOOD/ETC ABOUT MORE THAN 35,000$. THIS COUNTRY IS TAKING ALL OF MY MONEY.
