I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE STALLING. AT A STOP, THE VEHICLE'S IDLE SPEED VARIES AND STARTS TO SHAKE AND WILL STALL IF I DON'T PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL. SOMETIMES IT HAS STALLED EVEN AFTER PUTTING IT IN NEUTRAL. I HAVE RECENTLY HAD A TUNE-UP AND MY GAS FILTER REPLACED, WITH NO RESULTS. *LA

1994 FORD TEMPO GL. MY HUSBAND'S CAR WENT UP IN FLAMES AND SMOKE YESTERDAY WHILE DRIVING IT, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND POLICE CAME AND PUT IT OUT. THE CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS, AS WELL AS THE JACKET MY HUSBAND WAS (FORTUNATELY) WEARING WHEN THE FLAMES CAME SHOOTING OUT FROM THE ENGINE AREA INTO THE DRIVER'S SEAT. A FRIEND OF MINE SUGGESTED THAT I CHECK IF OTHERS HAD THIS PROBLEM, AND I CAME ACROSS THIS SITE. IT LOOKS LIKE OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM, IF THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN 97V019000 IS AN INDICATION OF SUCH. AS FAR AS I KNOW, WE WERE NEVER NOTIFIED THAT SOME FORD TEMPOS WERE POTENTIAL FIRE TRAPS. MY HUSBAND COULD HAVE BEEN SEVERELY BURNED, BUT FORTUNATELY, HIS JACKET TOOK THE BRUNT OF THE FLAMES. *JB

"SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT GOES ON WHILE DRIVING, SOMETIMES GOING OFF AFTER A FEW MINUTES AND SOMETIMES STAYING ON FOR 20-40 MILES. SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE LOOKED UP THE CODES AND CAN'T FIND A PROBLEM. CONSUMER, UPON INVESTIGATION, FOUND THAT THE MAIN PULLEY BOLTS ARE WORKING LOOSE. THEY WEREN'T PROPERLY TORQUED FROM THE FACTORY. AS A RESULT THE ENGINE HAS OVERHEATED, PROBLEMS WITH THE ALTERNATOR, LIGHTING SYSTEM AND STEERING POWER WAS LOST BECAUSE OF CONNECTIONS TO THE MAIN PULLEY. *JG

THE LOCATION OF DRAIN HOLE IN THE MUFFLER HAS CAUSED CONTROL ARMS AND FUEL TANK TO RUST. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. OWNER NOTICED THE RUSTING ABOUT A MONTH AGO.*AK.ET.
GAS TANK WAS LEAKING AND SPRAYING GAS BACK ON THE MUFFLER. THERE WERE ALOT OF FUMES IN THE CAR. IF SOMEONE CAME BY, AND CAR BACKFIRED, IT COULD EXPLODE. TOOK TO DEALER, AND THEY REPLACED THE TANK. BUT FUMES ARE STILL THERE. CONSUMER FELT THEY SHOULD HAVE CHECKED MUFFLER ALSO. *AK
A HOLE IN THE MUFFLER TO PREVENT RUST IS CAUSING THE SUSPENSION AND THE GAS TANK TO PREMATURLEY RUST, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A FIRE. PLEASE GIVE ANY FURTHER DETAILS. *AK

CRANKCASE OIL THROUGH DIPSTICK ENGINE COMPLETELY RUINED.
WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE A LOUD BANGING NOISE COMES FROM THE CRANKSHAFT: PULLEY. THIS INFORMATION WAS TOLD TO OWNER BY ASE MECHANIC AND THE DEALERSHIP. THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTED.
HARMONIC BALANCER FAILED.
POSSIBLE POOR PERFORMANCE OF ENGINE IS CAUSING A KNOCKING NOISE.
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE STOPPED, HOOD AND TAIL PIPE SMOKE OCCURRED. ALSO, THERE WAS A HOLE IN THIRD CYLINDER, ENTIRE ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED, COSTING APPROX. $3,000. DEALER REPRESENTATIVE STATED THAT A SERVICE BULLETIN HAD MENTIONED THAT THE FORD TEMPO HEAD GASKET SHOULD BE CHANGED AFTER 50,000 TO AVOID THE PROBLEM WITH THE FORD TEMPO (VULCAN ENGINE).
EXHAUST PIPE CAME APART AT THE WELD AND FELL TO THE ROOD. *AK
VEHICLE STALL WITHOUT WARNING, AT ANY TIME AND ANY PLACE, AFTER WAITING 5 TO 10 MINUTES IT WILL AGAIN RESTART.

A TAPPING SOUND COULD BE HEARD COMING FROM THE FRONT PART OF ENGINE THAT WAS DUE TO A LOOSE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY. THE PULLEY HAS BEEN REPLACED. *AK *SLC
CRANKSHAFT:PULLEY VEHICLE MAKES A LOUD NOISE LIKE METAL RUBBING AGAINST METAL. HAD VEHICLE REPAIRED, BUT THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. *AK CONSUMER SAID THE LISTED NAME AND ADDRES IS MINE BUT I HAVE NEVER OWNED THIS VEHICLE NOR HAVE I EVER HAD ANY KNOWLEDGE OF IT BEFORE. *YH
