If my vehicle is not used for a few days (3 to 4 days), when I start the vehicle, all the needles of the instrument cluster oscillate violently between extremes. However, this does not affect drivability and I can slowly move the car out of my driveway and get on the street. About 30 to 45 seconds after this, the needles stop moving and resume normal function.

ABS LIGHT CAME ON CONTINUALLY FOR THE LAST 6000 MILES. BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO FORD IN PLAINVILLE, CT AND THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NO RECALL AND THE COST WAS TO INCLUDE A NEW COMPUTER FOR AN UNREASONABLE DOLLAR AMOUNT. I NEVER KNEW ABOUT FORD'S RECALLS UNTIL LAST MARCH. BEFORE CALLING FORD I DID RESEARCH AND FOUND NUMEROUS PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS AS ME. MINE STARTED IN 2012 WHEN OUT OF THE BLUE THE FRONT WINDOWS WOULD NO LONGER OPEN. NEXT WHEN YOU TRIED TO PUT THE HEAT ON IN THE REAR THERE WAS STRANGE NOISE AND NOW I'M TO AFRAID TO USE IT. THE PAST 3 YRS THE GAUGES GO HAYWIRE. SOMETIMES IF YOU HIT THE DASH IT'LL STOP BUT LOCKS UP AND YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR SPEED IS. IF I LEAVE IT ALONE SOMETIMES IT WILL STOP ON IT'S OWN BUT LOCKS UP TO WHEREVER IT STOPS AT. ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS THE ABS LIGHT WILL COME ON. FOR OVER 2 YRS NOW THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS BEEN ON. I HAD IT CHECKED & WAS TOLD IT WAS THE O2 SENSORS FOR WHICH I REPLACED, 3 DAYS LATER THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AGAIN THEY SAID IT WAS THE O2 SENSORS. IN THE PAST 2 1/2 YRS I'VE HAD TO REPLACE THE BATTERY BECAUSE WHILE DRIVING THE BATTERY LIGHT WILL COME ON. IF I ACCELERATE IT GOES OFF BUT NOBODY KNOWS WHY THE BATTERY KEEPS DYING. SOME SAY ITS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM DRAINING THE BATTERY. THE INTERIOR LIGHTS WILL COME ON FOR NO REASON SO I HAD THEM REMOVED AS I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE DRAINING THE BATTERY. LAST SUMMER OUT OF THE BLUE THE A/C STARTED MAKING A NOISE AND JUST QUIT JUST LIKE A MONTH AGO I HEARD THIS CLICKING NOISE ONLY TO FIND OUT I HAD NO HEAT. I SPOKE TO FORD ABOUT THE GAUGES, THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, THE A/C AND SOME OF THE OTHER ISSUES AND THEIR RESPONSE WAS IT WASN'T ON THEIR RECALL LIST AND WOULD ONLY FIX THE REAR AXLE, CRUISE CONTROL AND THE FRONT IF THERE WAS ANYTHING WRONG. WHEN I MENTIONED ALL THE INFO I FOUND ON NHTSA'S SITE ABOUT THIS VEHICLE I WAS TOLD THEY HAVE NO CONTROL OVER WHAT IS FIXED. IN MARCH, 2007, THE TRANSMISSION IN MY 1999 FORD WINDSTAR DIED AT 106,653 MILES. I PAID $2,985.91 TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED AT THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP IN LEBANON, OREGON. IN MAY OF 2012, AT 174,000 MILES, I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION AGAIN. THE FIRST REPAIR SHOP I TOOK IT TO TOLD ME THE TRANSMISSION WAS DEAD AND THAT I NEEDED TO REPLACE IT. THE SECOND REPAIR SHOP I TOOK IT TO TOLD ME THAT THE COMPUTER CHIP WAS BAD AND THAT IT HAD PROBABLY DAMAGED THE TRANSMISSION. I WAS TOLD THAT I COULD REPLACE THE COMPUTER CHIP AND SEE HOW LONG THE TRANSMISSION WOULD LAST BEFORE IT TOTALLY DIED. *TR

WE HAD THIS SWITCH REPLACED IN A FORD RECALL, BUT APPEARS THE REPAIR WAS DONE INCORRECTLY (FUSE INSTALLED ON WRONG SIDE OF WIRING HARNESS, ALLOWING THE SWITCH TO REMAIN HOT). SO FORTUNATE THAT THE CAR WAS NOT PARKED IN THE GARAGE, FOR I WOULD NOT BE WRITING THIS REVIEW TODAY! *TR

ALL OF THE GAUGES; E.G, THE SPEEDOMETER AND RPM GAUGES JUMP RAPIDLY FROM 0 MPH ALL THE WAY AS FAR AS IT WILL GO, THE GAS GAGE JUMPS RAPIDLY FROM EMPTY TO FULL AND BACK AGAIN, TEMP FROM COLD TO HOT ETC. THIS HAPPENS OFTEN AND THEN RESUMES NORMAL ACTIVITY AGAIN FOR A UNCERTAIN TIME. IT;S REALLY FRIGHTENING WHEN OCCURRING. THE FORD DEALER HERE, YUKON OK, STATES THE ONLY CURE IS TO REPLACE THE WHOLE THING AT A RIDICULOUS COST OF $ 632.00. THE PROBLEM STARTED IN APRIL OF 2011 AND CONTINUES TODAY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO ASSIST WITH THE REPAIRS. THE DASHBOARD GAUGES, TACHOMETER, SPEEDOMETER, GAS, AND TEMPERATURE GO HAYWIRE CONSTANTLY. ONE TIME ON A HILL, I COULD NOT PUT THE SHIFT LEVER IN PARK SO THAT I COULD ASSIST A HANDICAPPED FAMILY MEMBER OUT OF MY VEHICLE. THE TACHOMETER NEEDLE WAS PINNED TO THE RIGHT, AND THE SHIFT INDICATOR COULDN'T MOVE TO THE RIGHT TO ENGAGE PARK. I NEVER KNEW HOW MUCH GAS I HAD, THE SPEED I WAS GOING, OR THE RUNNING TEMPERATURE OF MY VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC AND THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE ABS ELECTRONIC STABILITY MODULE UNIT WOULD NEED REPLACING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED BY AN AUTHORIZED DEALER THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 78,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 79,119.

CONCURRENT WITH THE LEAKING FLUID, I NOTICED THE ABS LIGHT WOULD SOMETIMES COME ON, THE SPEEDOMETER BECAME ERRATIC, THE "O/D OFF" LAMP SOMETIMES FLASHED, THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS OFTEN NON-FUNCTIONAL. ON DECEMBER 17, 2009 WE TOOK OUR 1999 FORD WINDSTAR IN TO THE CERRITOS FORD DEALERSHIP IN CA. WE RECEIVED A LETTER FROM FORD THAT OUR VEHICLE WAS BEING RECALLED (RECALL # 09S09) AND AS IT TURNED OUT THE VAN WAS LEAKING AND THEY REPLACED THE LEAKING SWITCH AND HARNESS. BEFORE THE WORK WAS EVEN DONE, I TOLD THEM THAT WE WERE CONCERNED ABOUT THE ABS LIGHT THAT WAS ON OUR DASHBOARD. THE RECALL SUMMARY STATES THAT THE "WITH A LEAKING SCDS, DEALERS WILL ALSO INSPECT THE ABS CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR AND REPAIR AS NECESSARY. REPAIRS WILL BE COMPLETED FREE OF CHARGE." ON OUR INVOICE, THE DEALERSHIP FAILED TO NOTE OUR CONCERN REGARDING THE ABS AND NEVER STATED WHETHER OR NOT THEY INSPECTED THE ABS CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR. ALTHOUGH I AM AWARE THAT THERE COULD BE OTHER FACTORS CAUSING THE ABS LIGHT TO SHOW UP, I AM DEEPLY CONCERNED THAT THE RECALL WAS NOT FULLY COMPLETED. I AM AWARE THAT THE ISSUES WE ARE HAVING COULD RESULT IN A CAR FIRE. I WAS HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE DASHBOARD ON MY 1999 FORD WINDSTAR LAST SPRING. ALL THE GAUGES WOULD GO WACKY AND THE ABS LIGHT WOULD COME ON. MY SPEEDOMETER WASN'T READING CORRECTLY, POSSIBLY 10 TO 15 MILES AN HOUR OFF, MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO MAINTAIN THE CORRECT SPEED. I WASN'T AWARE OF THE PROBLEM UNTIL I GOT A RADAR TICKET IN THE MAIL. I KNEW WHAT SPEED I WAS TRAVELING ACCORDING TO THE SPEEDOMETER AND IT WAS DIFFERENT THAN WAS INDICATED. I FOUND A WEB SITE WHICH DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM I WAS EXPERIENCING ALONG WITH OTHER PROBLEMS THAT I WAS HAVING. THESE WERE THE SPEEDOMETER, CRUISE CONTROL SOMETIMES NOT WORKING THEN QUIT ALTOGETHER, ABS LIGHT IS ON, SOMETIMES THE BRAKE LIGHT WOULD COME ON THEN GO OFF, AND THE AIR CONDITIONER WOULD SOMETIMES QUIT WORKING. I THOUGHT THEY WERE UNRELATED BUT AFTER THE SPEEDING TICKET DISCOVERED THEY WERE CAUSED BY THE SAME PROBLEM, A SWITCH CONNECTED TO THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER. I TOOK THE MEASURES TO FIX THE PROBLEM AND THE ABS LIGHT IS STILL ON BUT THE OTHER SYSTEMS WORK FINE NOW. WE RECENTLY PURCHASED A USED 1999 FORD WINDSTAR SEL MINIVAN. WE TOOK IT TO AN AUTO SHOP TO HAVE AN OIL CHANGE, AND AIR FILTERS REPLACED. UPON RETURNING HOME THAT EVENING, WE NOTICED AND SMELLED SMOKE FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. WHEN WE WENT TO LOOK AT IT, WE FOUND WHITE SMOKE COMING UP FROM BEHIND THE AIR FILTER AND IN FRONT OF THE MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER. WE THOUGHT THAT SOME FLUIDS HAD BEEN SPILT AND WERE SIMPLY BURNING OFF. WHEN WE WENT TO DRIVE IT LATER THAT EVENING, THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WENT DARK. ALL OF THE INTERIOR LIGHTS, THE ODOMETER, SPEEDOMETER, COMPUTER STATION, RADIO, CLIMATE CONTROL, WINDOWS, DOOR LOCKS, A/C, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CRUISE CONTROL, AND TURN SIGNALS STOPPED WORKING. WE MADE IT HOME SAFELY AS THE HEAD AND TAIL LIGHTS WERE STILL WORKING. UPON INSPECTION THE FOLLOWING DAY, WE FOUND THAT THE BRAKE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL DEACTIVATION SWITCH (2B264) LOCATED UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER (BEHIND THE AIR FILTER) DEVELOPED A LEAK. 1999 FORD WINDSTAR 3.0L 4SP AUTO. ANTI LOCK BRAKE CONTROL MODULE (TESTED AT MY EXPENSE $70) HAS GONE BAD, SEEMS TO BE A BIG PROBLEM AS MANY PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED THIS. I HAVE NO ODOMETER, SPEEDOMETER OR ANTI LOCK BRAKES. THE ENGINE ALSO SHUTS OFF ON ITS OWN ON OCCASION, DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S RELATED OR NOT. VAN RUNS GOOD OTHERWISE, HAS 107000 MILES ON IT I THINK, SINCE THE ODOMETER HASN'T WORKED FOR 3 MONTHS. 2 WEEKS AGO, MY FAMILY AND I HAD MADE A TRIP TO THE DALLAS TEXAS AREA. A FEW DAYS INTO THE VACATION WE HAD GONE TO CHURCH. WELL, WHEN WE HAD LEFT CHURCH, I NOTICED THAT THE SPEEDOMETER, THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM WERE NOT WORKING. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE ABS WAS ON. MY FATHER-IN-LAW SUGGESTED THAT THERE WAS A FUSE PROBLEM THAT MADE THE AC STOP WORKING. WE LOOKED THE FUSES OVER AND REPLACED THE BURNT ONES ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL. THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTED UNTIL WE HAD LEFT TEXAS. ON THE WAY BACK HOME, (WE WERE IN OKLAHOMA AT THE TIME) WE HAD STOPPED AT A GAS STATION TO FUEL UP. LEAVING THE GAS STATION ONTO THE HIGHWAY OUR DASH LIGHTS WENT OUT COMPLETELY (IT WAS AROUND 5 AM). SO I PULLED OVER TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, BY THIS TIME THE HOOD OF THE VAN WAS BLOWING OUT FAINT SMOKE. WE LOOKED UNDER THE DRIVER'S SIDE AND SEEN THERE WAS A FIRE. MY WIFE AND I IMMEDIATELY GOT OUR 3 KIDS OUT OF THE VAN AND INTO OUR PARENT'S CAR, WHILE MY FATHER-IN-LAW DOUSED THE FLAMES. THANK GOD WE HAD ROAD SIDE ASSISTANCE THAT TOWED US TO THE NEAREST AUTOZONE. WE WERE SHOCKED AS TO WHAT EXACTLY HAD HAPPENED. AFTER REPLACING SOME MORE FUSES, WE GOT IT UP AND RUNNING LONG ENOUGH TO MAKE IT HOME. THE SPEEDOMETER STILL DOES NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY AND THE ABS LIGHT IS STILL ON. DURING THAT TIME WE NOTICED THAT THE CONNECTION UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER THAT HOUSED THE ABS MODULE HAD COMPLETELY MELTED AND HAD STARTED THE FIRE. I WENT ON THE INTERNET TO SEE IF ANYONE ELSE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS HAS BEEN A BIG ISSUE WITH 1995-2003 WINDSTAR MODELS. I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE FOR APPROXIMATELY 10 MONTHS AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS EXCEPT FOR THIS. LIKE I HAVE STATED BEFORE, I HAVE 3 BABIES THAT COULD HAVE BEEN HARMED OR KILLED BY A FAULTY DESIGN ON THIS VEHICLE. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT COULD BE DONE ABOUT THIS ISSUE. 1999 FORD WINDSTAR WAS OBSERVED PRODUCING SMOKE WHILE SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY AT 7:00AM 7/31/08 (THE VEHICLE WAS LAST DRIVEN AROUND 8:00PM THE PREVIOUS EVENING). MY 1999 FORD WINDSTAR HAS AN ISSUE WITH FUSE #10 BLOWING WHICH AFFECTS THE SPEEDOMETER (DOES NOT WORK) AS WELL AS A/C WHICH ONLY BLOWS HOT AIR. THE ABS BRAKE LIGHT STAYS ON AND MUCH MORE INSTRUMENTATION IS INOPERABLE INCLUDING CRUISE CONTROL. THIS FIRST HAPPENED WHILE ON A HIGHWAY IN COLORADO. MY HUSBAND AND I PULLED OVER AND CHECKED THE MANUAL. WE REPLACED FUSE #10 AND ALL WORKED FINE FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS. THEN THE FUSE BEGAN BLOWING EACH TIME I TURNED ON THE CAR. WE BOUGHT SEVERAL EXTRA FUSES AS WE WERE GETTING READY TO DRIVE TO OUR NEW HOME IN ARIZONA. THIS WAS JULY 11, 2008. THE CAR RAN FOR 12 HOURS ON A NEW FUSE WITH NO PROBLEM. WE STOPPED AND RESTED FOR THREE HOURS AND CONTINUED OUR ROAD TRIP ON JULY 12TH. THE FUSE BLEW WHEN I STARTED THE CAR AND SEVERAL NEW FUSES NEVER GOT IT TO WORK AGAIN. I HAD TO DRIVE THE LAST LEG (FOUR HOURS) OF MY TRIP WITH NO A/C (DESERT CLIMATE) AND WORST OF ALL NO KNOWLEDGE OF HOW FAST I WAS GOING. THAT WAS SCARY. I PURCHASED A 1999 FORD WINDSTAR A FEW MONTHS AGO. I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH IT. IN FACT, I HAVE SPENT MORE THAN HALF OF WHAT I PAID FOR THE VEHICLE IN REPAIRS IN ONLY 2 MONTHS. THE REASON FOR MY COMPLAINT IS THAT THE MOST RECENT REPAIRS HAVE INVOLVED ITEMS THAT I FEEL ARE EXTREME SAFETY CONCERNS. 1- THE POWER DOORS ON MY VEHICLE TO NOT LOCK/UNLOCK PROPERLY, MAKING IT UNABLE TO OPEN THE SLIDING DOORS. THIS WAS LOOKED AT BY THE FORD MECHANIC TODAY. I WAS TOLD THAT THE DOOR LATCHES WERE BAD AND WERE "BURNING UP" THE DOOR LOCK ACTUATORS. I'M NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE REASON, BUT ALSO LATELY, MY DOOR AJAR LIGHT COMES ON MY DASH AND THE INTERIOR LIGHTS ARE COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING. I HAVE 3 CHILDREN, TWO OF THEM IN CAR SEATS AND UNABLE TO GET THEM SELVES OUT OF A CAR. I AM CONCERNED THAT IF SOMETHING WERE TO HAPPEN SUCH AS AN ACCIDENT OR AN EMERGENCY SITUATION THAT I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET MY CHILDREN OUT OF THE VEHICLE. MY BRAKE LIGHT STOPPED WORKING ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY VAN. I CHANGED THE BULB AND TESTED IT, AND DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. I THEN NOTICED THAT MY REAR TAIL LIGHT IS NOW NOT WORKING. I HAD THIS CHECKED OUT BY THE MECHANIC TODAY, AND WAS TOLD IT IS THE REAR ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE WHICH IS GOING TO COST ME NEARLY $600 TO FIX. I'M NOT SURE WHAT WOULD CAUSE SUCH A THING TO FAIL, BUT THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY CONCERN, WHERE LIGHTS COME INTO PLAY. I COULD HAVE BEEN REAR ENDED DUE TO THIS MALFUNCTION. I'M BEGINNING TO WONDER IF FORD IS IN THE AUTO MAKING/SELLING BUSINESS, OR THE SERVICE BUSINESS. WE STILL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE O/D LIGHT COMING ON AND HAVING TO ADD TRANSMISSION FLUID FREQUENTLY. SECOND: OUR VAN INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR LIGHTS DIM AND BLINK AT RANDOM. THE ALERT WILL ALSO COME ON SAYING ONE OF THE DOORS IS AJAR LEAVING THE INTERIOR LIGHTS ON AND DOORS UNLOCKED. IT WILL RANDOMLY CHANGE DOORS WHILE DRIVING. NOW THE REAR TURNING LIGHTS DO NOT FLASH, THE LOCKS DO NOT WORK, THE INTERIOR AND BACK EXTERIOR LIGHTS DO NOT GO OUT EVEN WITH THE KEY OFF AND OUT. THERE WILL BE RANDOM BEEPING AND BUZZING NOISES. THE REAR HEAT/AIR TURNS OFF AND ON AT RANDOM EVEN WITH THE CONTROLS IN THE OFF POSITION. THERE IS A CLICKING UNDER THE DASH WHEN THE REAR HEAT OR AIR IS RUNNING. ON INSPECTION THE MECHANIC FOUND THE ALARM WIRES UNDER THE DASH BARE, UNHOOKED, AND EXPOSED. HE TAPED THESE HOPING IT WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM. IT HAS NOT. THE LOCAL FORD DEALER IS NOT REPUTABLE. IT IS A WELL KNOWN FACT IN THE COMMUNITY THAT THEY BREAK SOMETHING ELSE WHILE FIXING ANOTHER TO ENSURE A RETURN VISIT. THAT THE TRANSMISSION JUST BROKE AND WOULD COST ME $3000.00. I HAVE HAD THIS CAR LESS THEN 2 YEARS. I HAD AN EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT JUST EXPIRED A FEW MONTHS AGO. MY OBD LIGHT WAS ON BUT WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER IT WAS A SENSOR. THEY COULD TURN IT OFF BUT IT WASN'T ANYTHING MAJOR. AFTER READING ALL THE COMPLAINTS I'M SURE IT IS MAJOR. SINCE PURCHASING THIS CAR, I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE TIRES AT LEAST EVERY SIX MONTHS, MAJOR ENGINE REPAIR, ALTERNATOR REPAIR, AS WELL AS SPRING REPLACEMENT. OVERALL, I'VE PUT MORE THEN $3000.00 IN REPAIR NOT INCLUDING THE REPAIR OF THE TRANSMISSION I NOW NEED. I LOVED MY WINDSTAR BUT I AM NOW DISCOVERING THAT IT PUTS MY LIFE ENDANGER TO DRIVE IT. MY TWO KIDS WERE IN THE CAR WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND I FEARED SOMEONE WOULD HIT MY CAR. THE WORST PART ABOUT ALL THIS IS I AM UNABLE TO GET RID OF THIS CAR AS I STILL AM BUYING THIS CAR. I BOUGHT MY 99 FORD WINDSTAR SEL IN MARCH OF THIS YEAR (2006) AND NOT EVEN A WEEK AFTER I BOUGHT IT WHEN I WOULD PULL OUT FROM RED LIGHTS OR STOP SIGNS AND THE VAN WOULD EITHER DIE ON ME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD OR WOULD CONTINUOUSLY HESITATE. I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THE FIRST TIME THEY SAID THAT IT WAS MY KEYS SO THEY REPROGRAMMED MY KEYS. THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN AS SOON AS I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP, I BROUGHT IT BACK A SECOND TIME, THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY BELIEVED IT HAD TO DO WITH MY THEFT DEVICE. THEY ASSURED ME IT WAS FIXED THEN SENT ME HOME WITH IT. A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER IT DID THE SAME THING AGAIN ONLY THIS TIME EVERY TIME I GOT IN MY VAN OR CLOSED MY DRIVER DOOR FROM ENTERING OR EXITING MY VAN IT WOULD TELL ME ON MY MESSAGE SYSTEM THAT MY DRIVER DOOR WAS AJAR WHICH LEAD TO THE INTERIOR LIGHTS BEING ON. IT DID THAT THE DAY I TOOK IT HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP SO I HAD TO BRING IT BACK FOR A THIRD TIME NOW FOR THE RE-OCCURRING PROBLEM I WAS HAVING AND NOW WITH THE DOOR BEING SAID TO BE OPEN. THEY FINALLY SAID THEY FOUND THE PROBLEM AND THAT FORD TOLD THEM THAT THERE WAS A SIMILAR INCIDENT WITH ANOTHER VAN LIKE MINE AND SAID THAT THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE CIP SYCRONIZOR. I WAS ABLE TO TAKE MY VAN HOME AGAIN AND THEY PROBLEM HAD BEEN FIXED ALL EXCEPT THE MESSAGE I STILL GET TO THIS DAY ABOUT MY DRIVER DOOR BEING AJAR WHEN IT ISN'T. IT DIDN'T DO IT TO ME BEFORE I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND NOW THEY WON'T FIX IT WHEN IT WAS A RESULT FROM THEM HAVING IT. KEEP IN MIND EACH OF THE 3 TIMES I HAD TO TAKE IT IN I HAD TO LEAVE IT WITH THEM FOR 1-3 DAYS EACH TIME! NO LOAN CAR WAS OFFERED TO ME SO I WAS LEFT WITH NO CAR AND I HAVE 3 SMALL CHILDREN THAT I HAVE TO CARE FOR AND NEED TRANSPORTATION FOR. *JB

I OPENED ELECTRONIC SLIDING DRIVER SIDE DOOR ON MY 1999 FORD WINDSTAR VAN TO LOAD THE CAR FOR A WEEKEND TRIP. I KNEELED IN THE DOOR OPENING TO POSITION THINGS IN THE BACK SEAT. WITHOUT WARNING THE DOOR BEGAN TO SHUT ON ITS OWN. BEFORE I COULD JUMP OUT OF THE CAR, IT HAD MY CALVES STUCK IN THE DOOR. IT DID NOT AUTOMATICALLY OPEN AS I WAS INFORMED IT SHOULD HAVE WHEN IT HIT MY LEGS. MY DAUGHTER WAS ABLE TO PULL THE DOOR OPEN AND ALLOW ME TO ESCAPE. MY RIGHT CALF WAS INJURED, THOUGH IT DID NOT BREAK THE SKIN, I HAVE A LARGE BRUISE FROM THE DOORS IMPACT APPROX. 2 INCHES HIGH AND 4 INCHES LONG. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP (TED BRITT FORD IN FAIRFAX VIRGINIA) WHERE I PURCHASED MY VAN AND CARRY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. THEY HAVE HAD MY CAR IN FOR NUMEROUS REPAIRS, ALL RELATED TO THE DOORS MALFUNCTIONING OR OTHER ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THERE WAS AN INJURY DUE TO THE DOOR FAILURE. 1999 FORD WINDSTAR VAN:: CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING. I REMEMBERED SEEING A SPECIAL ON CNN-TV RECENTLY ABOUT FORD F150 AND EXPLORER VEHICLES CATCHING ON FIRE. SUSPECTED CAUSE WAS THE CRUISE CONTROL CUT-OUT SWITCH LOCATED ON THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER. SO I DECIDED TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANYTHING I COULD SEE RELATED TO MY PROBLEM. I FOUND THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH THAT'S MOUNTED ON THE BOTTOM FRONT OF THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER SOAKED WITH BRAKE FLUID. APPARENTLY THE SWITCH'S SEAL FAILED CAUSING BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK THRU THE SWITCH INTO THE POWER CONNECTOR AND RUN DOWN THE WIRING. THIS FAILURE COULD HAVE CAUGHT MY VEHICLE ON FIRE BECAUSE A LIQUID ACROSS A 12 VOLT POWER CONNECTOR TO GROUND IS A HIGH RESISTANCE SHORT TRANSLATING INTO HEAT = FIRE. I TOOK SOME PICTURES WITH A DIGITAL CAMERA AND CAN E-MAIL THEM IF YOU'RE INTERESTED. IN THE MEAN TIME I DISCONNECTED THE POWER CONNECTOR AT THE CRUISE CONTROL CUT-OUT SWITCH FOR SAFETY. I CAN'T FIND ANY RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM ON A 1999 FORD WINSTAR ? I HAVE A 1999 FORD F150 TRUCK ALSO AND IT HAS THE CRUISE CONTROL CUT-OUT SWITCH MOUNTED ON THE END OF THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER EXCEPT IT'S ON THE TOP. I ALSO DISCONNECTED IT TO BE SAFE. I CALLED FORD AND A NEW SWITCH COSTS ABOUT $15.00 BUT NONE ARE AVAILABLE. SOMEONE NEEDS TO KICK THE ROCK OFF FORD BEING IN TOTAL DENIAL OF THE PROBLEM. JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING THAT CAN GO WRONG WITH A CAR, I'VE EXPERIENCED IT AS THE OWNER OF THIS 1999 FORD WINDSTAR LX. I'VE HAD TRANSMISSION WORK DONE, BRAKE WORK, REPLACED TIRES (TWICE IN 2 YEARS), REPLACE THE BATTERY AND THE STARTER. I CAME TO THIS SITE BECAUSE THE CAR WOULDN'T START, WOULDN'T TAKE A JUMP, WOULDN'T MAKE A SOUND. I CALLED TO HAVE IT TOWED AND THE GENTLEMAN JIGGLED THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AND THE CAR STARTED. A FEW DAYS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME NO ONE COULD START IT. TESTING THE BATTERY AND PRIMARY PARTS FOR STARTING THE CAR PROVED THAT THESE PARTS WERE ALL FUNCTIONING NORMAL. A FEW HOURS AND $127.00 LATER (NOT INCLUDING THE COST OF TOWING THE VEHICLE) I'M TOLD THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE ANTI-THEFT DEVICE. IT IS BROKEN AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED TO THE TUNE OF ABOUT $900.00 WITH A 90-DAY WARRANTY. RECOMMENDATIONS TO ME WERE TO GET RID OF THE CAR. MY VAN WAS BARELY OUT OF WARRANTY WHEN THE O/D OFF LIGHT BEGAN FLASHING AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE FORD DEALER TOLD ME THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS A RESULT OF A BROKEN SENSOR WELD ON MY INTAKE MANIFOLD TO THE TUNE OF APPROX. $900. THEY ALSO STATED THAT THE O/D OFF LIGHT MEANT THAT THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION NEEDED REPLACED TO THE TUNE OF $2,700. ALL THIS FOR BEING 1 MONTH AND 500 MILES OUT OF WARRANTY. PLUS, I SEE THAT MANY PEOPLE WITH FORD WINDSTARS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING AT 35,000 MILES AND 70,000 (TWICE) SO I SEE THAT I WILL UNDOUBTEDLY HAVE SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO WHEN THE WARRANTY RUNS OUT ON THE TRANSMISSION... ALMOST LIKE THE DARNED THING IS DELIBERATELY DESIGNED TO CREATE A HUGE REPAIR BILL THE MOMENT IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY.

VEHICLE FAILED TO START 11 TIMES. EACH TIME THE DEALERSHIP INDICATED THE CAR WAS "FIXED;" HOWEVER, WITHIN WEEKS THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURED AGAIN. THE DEALERSHIP ONLY CONTACTED THE FORD MANUFACTURING COMPANY TO REQUEST ASSISTANCE IN ASCERTAINING THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM AND SUBSEQUENT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CORRECTING THE PROBLEM AFTER LEGAL REPRESENTATION WAS OBTAINED. A COMPREHENSIVE DIAGNOSTIC WORK-UP WAS COMPLETED WHICH REVEALED NO INFORMATION RELATIVE TO THE ORIGIN OF THE PROBLEM. IN MY PERSONAL OPINION, THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE HAD MANY OCCASSIONS TO BLOW THE HORN FOR SOMEONE GETTING TOO CLOSE TO ME, OR CHANGING LANES WITH A THREAT OF SIDESWIPING ME. WHEN I HIT THE HORN WITH THE HEEL OF MY HAND, THERE IS NO RESPONSE. SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THIS WAS NORMAL FOR THIS MODEL TO ONLY HAVE THE HORN WORK IN THAT ONE SMALL SPOT. WHEN RETURNED FOR NEXT WARRANTY SERVICE I MENTIONED THIS AGAIN, AND THIS TIME THEY SAID THEY WOULD REPLACE THE HORN/AIR BAG UNIT. AFTER REPLACEMENT, NOW THE UPPER LEFT QUADRANT OF THE SURFACE WORKS TO MAKE THE HORN BLOW, BUT THIS IS STILL A SAFETY HAZARD IN A PANIC SITUATION WHEN MOST COMMONLY MY RIGHT HAND IS USED TO HIT THE HORN AS WARNING - IN MOST CASES THE HORN STILL DOESN'T WORK. WHEN I COMPLAINED AGAIN, THEY SAID THIS WAS NORMAL. ON THE 21ST OF DEC 99, MY WIFE WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT IN OUR WINDSTAR. THIS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF THE HORN WERE USEABLE. THE WAY THE HORN BUTTON IS NOW YOU WILL HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME TRYING TO FIND THE EXACT SPOT TO PUSH TO GET THE HORN TO SOUND. WHEN TIME IS CRITICAL IN THE OUTCOME, SEARCHING FOR THAT EXACT SPOT ISN'T A PLAYER. THIS WAS THE CASE ON THE 21ST. WHEN AN INDIVIDUAL TRIED TO CROSS THE HIGHWAY HE HIT OUR VAN ON THE RIGHT SIDE CAUSING $6500 IN DAMAGE. PRIOR TO THE IMPACT SHE TRIED TO HIT THE HORN BUT COULD NOT FIND IT WHEN IT WAS NEEDED MOST. WE ARE ALMOST 100% POSITIVE THAT IF SHE COULD HAVE FOUND THE HORN SHE COULD HAVE SOUNDED IT, AND THE OTHER DRIVER WOULD HAVE SEEN HER COMING. LUCKILY MY 18 MONTH OLD AND 5 YR OLD DAUGHTERS WERE NOT WITH HER AT THE TIME. NOW I HAVE A $30,000 MINIVAN THAT WILL NEVER BE OF ANY VALUE AGAIN. SURE IT WILL BE FIXED, BUT WHO WOULD EVER WANT A VEHICLE LIKE THAT THAT HAS HAD EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. I GUESS THATS MY LOSS THOUGH.

THE HORN DOES SOUND EASILY WHEN PUSHING ON THE CENTER OF THE STEERING WHEEL. OFTEN THE HORN FAILS TO SOUND. THE TECHNICIANS AT MY FORD DEALER SAID THAT IT IS LIKE THE OTHER WINDSTARS. ALSO THE DESIGN IS DANGEROUS REQUIRING MOVING THE HAND FROM THE RIM OF THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE CENTER. IF ONLY ONE HAND IS AVAILABLE FOR USE, MOST OF THE CONTROL IS LOST WHEN ATTEMPTING TO SOUND THE HORN. ALSO IF THE AIRBAG WERE TO DEPLOY, THEN A DISLOCATED SHOULDER OR BROKEN ARM IS LILELY TO RESULT. ON THE FORD TAURUS THE HORN CAN BE RELIABLY SOUNDED WITH A THUMB WITHOUT MOVING THE HAND FROM THE OUTER RIM OF THE WHEEL. THIS ALSO LEAVES THE HAND AND ARM OUT OF THE WAY IN THE EVENT THE AIRBAG SHOULD DEPLOY. THE DESIGN OF THE HORN CONTROL ON THE WINDSTAR IS POOR AND DANGEROUS. *AK

THERE ARE TWO PROBLEMS WITH THE HORN IN THE 1999 WINDSTAR. FIRST, THE HORN REQUIRES EXTRAORDINARY PRESSURE IN ORDER TO GET IT TO SOUND. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION WHERE ONE NEEDS A QUICK SOUNDING OF THE HORN. SECOND, A LARGE AREA OF THE STEERING WHEEL WHERE ONE WOULD EXPECT TO BE ABLE TO SOUND THE HORN DOES NOT SOUND IT. SPECIFICALLY, THE AREA MOST LIKELY PRESSED IN AN EMERGENCY, THE UPPER PORTION OF THE CENTER OF THE WHEEL, HAS NO HORN ACTION. THE PART OF THE WHEEL TO WHICH I AM REFERRING IS TOP OF THE CENTER "HUB AREA" WHICH FACES THE DRIVER. I TOOK THE WINDSTAR TO CAMPUS FORD, OKEMOS, MICHIGAN. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BECAUSE "THEY ALL WORK THAT WAY." IN MY OPINION, THE HORN PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY THE AREAS OF THE STEERING WHEEL HUB THAT HAVE NO HORN ACTION, REPRESENT A SAFETY HAZARD TO VEHICLE OWNERS.
