I HAVE 3 PROBLEMS WITH MY 1999 FORD WINDSTAR WHICH CURRENTLY HAS 60,000 MILES. ONE OF THEM IS THE GLASS IN FRONT WHEN I'M DRIVING IN THE RAIN I HAVE TO TURN ON THE WIPERS THE DRIVER'S SIDE IN THE MIDDLE PART OF THE WIPER STAYS WET WHILE THE PASSENGER SIDE CLEANS VERY WELL. THE OTHER PROBLEM I'VE ALWAYS HAD IS THE POWERSTEERING WHEN I'M DRIVING, I'M GOING TO TURN TO THE SIDE AND THE CAR TURNS OFF THE GUIDE GETS HARD AND I CAN'T STRAIGHTEN IT TO TURN IT ON AGAIN. THE LAST PROBLEM IS THE TRANSMISSION, ONE DAY THE FAMILY WENT ALL TOGETHER IN THE CAR AND SHORTLY AFTER WE REALIZED THAT IT WAS OVERHEATING WE PARKED IN THE GRASS WE TURNED OFF THE CAR AND THE PART OF THE ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE AFTER THE ACCIDENT WE REALIZED THAT THE TRANSMISSION LIQUEFIED OIL. I HAD THE TRANSMISSION REPAIRED AND BEGAN TO GIVE SOME TIRESOME EVERY TIME I CHANGED GEARS. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY PARKED WITH THE DAMAGED TRANSMISSION. I UNDERSTAND THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE TRANSMISSION

I HAD THE REAR AXLE REPLACED BY THE RECALL, AND WHICH I PAID $300 FOR THE WORK. THE AXLE NOW DOES NOT ALIGN PROPERLY AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT SHIMS ARE REQUIRED. WITHOUT THEM THE REAR AXLE EATS MY TIRES. FORD HAS A POLICY TO MY UNDERSTANDING THAT NEW PARTS INSTALLED BY FORD HAVE A LIFETIME WARRANTY. I BELIEVE THAT FORD SHOULD FIX OR PAY FOR THIS WORK SO AS TO MAKE MY VAN SAFE, WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO REPAIR AN AXLE THAT WAS JUST REPLACED LESS THEN 10000 MILES AGO.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD WINDSTAR. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL POPPING NOISE AND THE POWER STEERING FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO SUNSET FORD (11700 GRAVOIS RD, SAINT LOUIS, MO 63127) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED BY THE DEALER THAT THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR THE VEHICLE DUE TO THREATS MADE BY THE CONTACT AND TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED FROM THE PREMISES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 160,000.

THIS VEHICLE WAS SERVICED AT 102,654 MILES, IN MARCH-APRIL OF 2011 BY KOONS FORD OF MARYLAND, (INVOICE#W70829, DATED MAY 5, 2011) IN RESPONSE TO FORD RECALL, RELATED TO "BROKEN FRONT SUBFRAME" AND "COLLAPSING REAR AXLE".--FRONT SUBFRAME WAS, AT THAT TIME, BROKEN ON THE RIGHT SIDE, DUE TO RUSTING. REPLACEMENT WAS NOT DONE, INSTEAD IT WAS PATCHED VIA A BOLTED TOGETHER "CLAMSHELL" REINFORCING DEVICE. IT NOW HAS BECOME APPARENT THAT AFTER USING THE VEHICLE AFTER THIS INITIAL FRAME SEPARATION, THE METAL OF THE LEFT SIDE WAS UNDULY STRESSED, AND HAS NOW BROKEN AT ITS WELDMENT POINT, RESULTING IN AN UNSAFE VEHICLE, THAT SWERVES TO THE LEFT, IF BRAKES ARE APPLIED WHILE IN MOTION ON THE STREET OR OTHER ROADWAY. WHEELS ARE NO LONGER KEPT IN ALIGNMENT, WITH LEFT FRONT WHEEL FREE TO MOVE TO THE FRONT OR REAR, IN RESPONSE TO APPLIED STRESS! THIS SUBFRAME FAILURE AFFECTED MANY SUCH VEHICLES, AND IT HAS BECOME EVIDENT THAT INSPECTION AND REPAIR WAS INADEQUATE, RESULTING IN A NEW, UNSAFE CONDITION! WAS DRIVING AROUND 40 MPH, REALIZED THE VAN HAD A WEIRD ODD STEERING PROBLEM SWERVING TO LEFT AND THEN TO THE RIGHT. I MADE IT HOME THEN LOOKED TOWARDS THE BACK REAR AXLE I SEEN A REAL LARGE CRACK IN THE REAR AXLE. THE VAN BACK SIDE WAS SITTING REALLY LOW LIKE THE AXLE WAS ABOUT TO COMPLETELY CRACK. IM NOT RISKING DRIVING BEING A SAFETY HAZARD. I SEEN THERE WAS A RECALL FOR IT BUT FORD SAYS ITS NOT VALID. I FOUND MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE SIMILAR TO MINE. DRIVING ALONG WHEN RIGHT FRONT STARTED TO VEER RIGHT AND WOBBLE. THESE MODELS ARE NOT SAFE. FORD IS AWARE OF THIS YET, WILL NOT HONOR A RECALL WHICH AFFECTS THESE MODELS. ALTHOUGH THERE IS A CORROSION SUB FRAME BREAK ON 1999 FORD WINDSTAR'S AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED( MECHANIC WILL TESTIFY) TO MINE, THEY KEEP MAKING EXCUSES AND WILL NOT HONOR THE EXPENSES FOR THEIR FAULTY DESIGN. MY VEHICLE IS A 99 FORD WINDSTAR IN VERY GOOD SHAPE, NEW TIRES BATTERY,ETC. IT IS NOW SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY BECAUSE OF A FRAME BROKEN THRU BY CORROSION. THE FRONT RIGHT ALMOST PUT ME INTO THE DITCH ON THE WAY HOME. THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW WHICH WAS IS OR SHOULD BE COVERED BY RECALL. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD VIOLENTLY. THE FAILURE WOULD OCCUR SPORADICALLY AND AT ANY GIVEN SPEED. THE VEHICLE WOULD SWAY ABNORMALLY WHEN BEING DRIVEN AND THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD OFTEN SEIZE WITHOUT WARNING. ADDITIONALLY, THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED THE VEHICLE LUNGING FORWARD AND VIOLENTLY JERKING WHEN IN DRIVE OR REVERSE ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. THE ENGINE CARRIAGE IS RUSTED OUT, AND THE REAR AXLE IS CRACKED DUE TO RUST. THE MAIN ARM OF THE BALL JOINT IS COMPLETELY PULLED AWAY FROM THE FRAME BECAUSE OF THE RUST. I CONTACTED BAAB FORD IN REED CITY MICHIGAN, BECAUSE I WAS TOLD BY THE MECHANIC I TOOK IT TO ORIGINALLY THAT THIS WAS A RECALLED PRODUCT. BAAB FORD TOLD ME YES IT IS A RECALL ISSUE, BUT NO THEY WONT FIX MY VEHICLE BECAUSE THE VIN DOESN'T COME UP AS ONE OF THE VEHICLES EFFECTED BY THE RECALL. I CONTACTED FORD MOTOR COMPANY AS THEY HAD ADVISED ME, FORD MOTOR COMPANY TOLD ME, MY VEHICLE ISN'T ON THE RECALL LIST, REGARDLESS OF THE FACT THAT IT HAS BOTH OF THE PROBLEMS THAT 1998 - 2003 FORD WINDSTAR WAS RECALLED FOR. THE VEHICLE SPEEDS UP WHENEVER IT HITS A BUMP AND ALSO PULLS TOWARDS THE CENTER LINE ESPECIALLY ON SLIPPERY ROADS OR WHERE LOSS OF TRACTION OCCURS. IT ALSO WEARS OUT TIRES EVERY 2 WEEKS. *TR

SUBFRAME GAVE OUT, ENGINE DROPPED AND CAR WAS TOWED TO MY HOME.I HAD JUST EXITED A HIGHWAY GOING 55MPH. I WAS DRIVING THE TO CAR TO ATTEND A WORK RELATED EVENT EARLY EVENING. I DROVE PAST THE ENTRANCE AND PROCEEDED TO TURN AROUND ON THE ROAD. AS I APPROACHED THE INTERSECTION THE VAN LOST POWER. I STOPPED BEING ABLE TO STEER AND BRAKE. I TURNED HARD ON THE STEERING WHEEL TO MOVE OFF THE ROAD. I WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO A TURN LANE AND FORTUNATELY THERE WAS VERY LIMITED TRAFFIC ON THE ROAD. THE CAR CAME TO A FULL STOP ON ITS OWN AND THERE WAS A LOUD SCRAPPING NOISE COMING FROM UNDER THE FRONT OF THE CAR. I WAS TOWED TO MY HOME. THE TOW DRIVER STATED THE " SUBFRAME HAD GIVEN AWAY AND WAS DRAGGING ON THE GROUND. IT REQUIRED A FLAT BED TRUCK TO TOW. MY MECHANIC CONFIRMED THE SUBFRAME HAD COLLAPSED . THE COST TO FIX WAS PROHIBITED AND I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE I CONTACTED FORD ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND THEY RESPONDED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL AT THAT TIME. THE CAR REMAINED IN THE DRIVEWAY IN THE EVENT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE FOR OVER ONE YEAR. I FINALLY DECIDED TO DONATE THE CAR HAVING NOT BEEN CONTACTED BY THE MANUFACTURER. I WAS CONTACTED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM IN 2011 I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT DUE TO THE FACT THAT I WAS FINANCIALLY DISADVANTAGED BY THE DELAYS OF THE MANUFACTURER TO IDENTIFY AND NOTIFY ME OF THE RECALL IN A TIMELY FASHION. *TR

MY ABS LIGHT STARTED TO FLASH AND IS NOW ON CONSTANT,MY BRAKES WORK BUT NOT THE GREATEST. MY AIR BAG LIGHT WILL START TO FLASH AND THEN COME ON CONSTANT ONCE THE VEHICLE IS SHUT OFF AND RESTARTED THE LIGHT USUALLY STAYS OFF BUT WILL DO THIS AT RANDOM. I HAVE HAD ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHERE I HEAR A POPPING NOISE IN THE FRONT END WHILE MAKING TURNS. WE HAVE REPLACED MOST OF THE FRONT END AND STILL HAVE THE ISSUE. I ALSO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IT IDLING REAL FAST THEN DOWN TO NOTHING IT BUCKS AND SPUTTERS WHEN PLUGGED INTO A COMPUTER IT SAYS THE VEHICLE RUNS LEAN SO WE REPLACED THE O2 SENSORS AND THINGS AND IT DID NOT HELP. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING MY VEHICLE AT ALL MOST OF THE TIME HOWEVER I NEED TO GET TO AND FROM WORK AND THE SCARY PART IS I HAVE TO HAUL MY CHILDREN AND THE ELDERLY PERSON I CARE FOR AROUND IT . IT DROVE FINE (STILL NOISY) FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND THEN STEERING WENT OUT AGAIN. I RETURNED TO THE SAME SHOP AND AGAIN TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED FLUID. I TOLD THEM I HAD NEVER SEEN A LEAK, BUT I WOULD CHECK EVERY DAY TO FIGURE OUT WHERE THE FLUID WAS GOING. ABOUT THREE DAYS LATER I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK AND THE NOISE BECAME VERY LOUD AGAIN AND WHEN I PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY I COULD SEE THE TRAIL OF POWER STEERING FLUID I LEFT BEHIND. THEY REFERRED ME TO FORD CORP CUSTOMER RELATIONS WHO GAVE ME HE SAME ANSWER. OBVIOUSLY, FORD WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ORIGINAL STEERING RACK WITH A REVISED UNIT UNLESS THE ORIGINAL UNIT WAS DEFECTIVE. ALTHOUGH THAT FACT IS NOT ACTUALLY STATED IN THE BULLETIN, IT IS VERY CLEARLY IMPLIED.NOW, HERE WE HAVE AN 82 YEAR OLD AND A 59 YEAR OLD, BOTH ON LIMITED INCOME FROM SOCIAL SECURITY, WHO TOOK EVERY PRECAUTION POSSIBLE TO BUY A RELIABLE VEHICLE AND AVOID EXPENSIVE REPAIRS STUCK WITH A VEHICLE WITH A DEFECT KNOWN TO FORD MOTOR COMPANY BUT THAT WE CANT HAVE FORD FIX BECAUSE WE DID NOT BUY THE VEHICLE WITHIN THE 3 YEAR ORIGINAL WARRANTY PERIOD! WHEN PARKED ON A HILL, THE VEHICLE ROLLED BACK. *BF WHEN THE VEHICLE ROLLED, IT WENT A BIG FIELD AND CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE DRIVERS DOOR AND MUFFLER. THE SECOND INCIDENT, THE VEHICLE WAS SITTING IN THE CONSUMERS DRIVEWAY ON A LITTLE HILL WHEN IT ROLLED AND HIT A TREE AND CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE FENDER AND BUMPER. THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN BOTH ACCIDENTS HAPPENED THE AIR BAGS NEVER DEPLOYED. ALSO THE STEERING WHEEL NEVER LOCKED. *JB

TRANSMISSION PROBLEM WITH 1999 FORD WINDSTAR ON SEVERAL OCCASION. *BF (TRANSMISSION SLIPPAGE) THESE PROBLEMS HAVE EXISTED SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS FIRST PURCHASED; ENGINE TROUBLE, VAPORIZATION LEAKS, AND A BROKEN GEAR. NOW IT HAS GONE OUT AGAIN CAUSING HER TO HIT A WALL IN THE GARAGE. THE VEHICLE STARTED PULLING TO THE LEFT AND THE CONSUMER COULD NOT BRING IT BACK. TWO PROBLEMS OCCURRED IN ONE MONTH. FIRST, THE POWER STEERING WENT CRAZY. THE FORD DEALER TOLD ME THAT IT WAS LEAKING AND HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE POWER STEERING ASSEMBLY. BUT I WAS NOT SURE BECAUSE I DO NOT KNOW IF FORD DEALER WAS TRYING TO RIP ME OFF. THEN I TOOK IT TO CARX IN RACINE, WI TO TAKE A LOOK AT IT. HE SAID SAME THING BUT HE CAN'T FIX IT BECAUSE HE HAD TO ORDER THE PART. THEN I DECIDED TO WAIT AND LEAVE. ABOUT 2 MILES LATER, THE TRANSMISSION BLEW UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING BUT CAN'T DRIVE OR GEAR. I HAD IT TOWED TO TOWNE FORD INC. IN RACINE, WI. THE TOWNE FORD INC SAID THAT HE FOUND THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM WAS ONE OF THE GEARS SNAPPED OFF THE METAL PART. THEY HAD NO IDEA WHY IT HAPPENED. SO, MY OPTION IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION INSTEAD OF SEVERAL PARTS BECAUSE OF THE COST AND WARRANTY COVERAGE. BUT MY VAN ISN'T OLD YET. IT IS 1999 FORD WINDSTAR AND IT HAS 50,000 MILES ON IT. IT IS STILL KIND OF NEW. WHY DID THE TRANSMISSION BLOW UP AT 50,000 MILES? WHAT IS THE LIFE EXPECTANCY ON TRANSMISSION? BY MILES OR AGE? RACK AND PINION STEERING HAD TO BE REPLACED AT 42,000 MILES DUE TO AN END SEAL FAILURE. MOST OF THE POWER STEERING FLUID LEAKED OUT WITHIN 2 DAYS OF THE LEAK. THERE IS A KNOW PROBLEM WITH THIS BY FORD THEY HAVE ISSUED 2 TSB'S. THIS PART SHOULD NEVER FAIL AT THIS MILEAGE, IT IS A POOR DESIGN WITH EITHER WRONG MATERIALS SELECTED FOR THE SEAL AND NO LIFE TESTING WAS CONDUCTED TO VERIFY THE DESIGN. FORD SHOULD BE EMBARRASSED TO TALK ABOUT QUALITY WHEN CRAMP LIKE THIS HAPPENS.*AK

MY VEHICLE IS A 1999 WITH 56,000 MILES. NOT EVEN 5 YEARS OLD WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURED. THIS COMPONET SHOULD LAST FOR A VEHICLES' LIFETIME. WHEN I CONTACTED FORD, THEY OFFERED NO HELP. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE AN INVESTIGATION! IT COST OVER $800 DOLLARS TO REPAIR, AND BEING THAT IT WAS REPLACED WITH ANOTHER FORD RACK AND PINION SYSTEM, I SHOULD PROBABLY START SAVING MY MONEY NOW FOR FUTURE REPAIRS. BOTH TRANS FAILURES LEFT THE VEHICLE WITH NO FORWARD GEARS, BUT REVERESE WORKED EACH TIME. THE FLUID HAS BEEN CHANGED PROPERLY AND THE VAN IS WELL MAINTAINED.

LEFT REAR AND LEFT FRONT HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLIES BEGAN MAKING LOUD HUMMING/GRINDING SOUNDS SUDDENLY AT 51,000 MILES. FORD DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED AND REPLACED DEFECTIVE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLIES FOR THE STANDARD PRICE AS IT IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THIS ITEM SHOULD LAST MUCH LONGER WITHOUT FAILING. STEERING PUMP BEGAN INTERMITTENTLY MAKING WHINING/HISSING SOUNDS WHEN THE SLIGHTEST TURNING INPUT WAS APPLIED. BY THE TIME THE FAILED POWER STEERING PUMP WAS DIAGNOSED, AND THE WHINING WAS CONSTANT, IT HAD CAUSED THE RACK AND PINION SEALS TO FAIL AND STEERING FLUID TO LEAK FROM THE RACK AND PINION SLEEVES. WHEN STEERING FLUID GOT LOW AND STEERING WAS NO LONGER POWER ASSISTED, MY WIFE ALMOST HAD A COLLISION WITH A VEHICLE FULL OF CHILDREN. NOT TRUSTING FORD ANYMORE, I ORDERED THE PARTS MYSELF AND HIRED A LOCAL MECHANIC TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND RACK AND PINION. IN MOST VEHICLES THESE COMPONENTS SHOULD LAST BEYOND 100,000 MILES. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I FOUND THAT FAILING POWER STEERING PUMPS, LEADING TO FAILED RACK AND PINION SEALS, IS A CONSISTENT PROBLEM ON 1999 WINDSTARS, AND THAT FORD IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND TRYING AVOID ADDRESSING IT.

WE HAVE TAKEN THIS VAN IN FOR REPAIR FIVETIMESIN ONE YEAR. THE FIRST MONTH WE HAD IT THE HEAD WAS REPLACED. THE POWER STEERING HAS GONE OUT FOR NOW THE FIFTH TIME. I ACTUALLY LOST CONTROLOF THE VEHICLE DUE TO BEINGUNABLE TO TURN THE STEERING. MY HUSBAND HAS TO DRIVE ME EVERYWHERE BECAUSE ONLY HE CAN TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. EACH TIME WE TAKE IT FOR REPAIR WE ARE CHARGED A DEDUCTIBLE AND I CAN NOT DO THIS ANYMORE. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A LEMON. MARSHALL MIZE FORD IN CHATTANOOGA TENNESSEE IS WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN JANUARY OF 2001. THEY ALSO HAVE PERFORMED ALL SERVICE ON THIS VEHICLE. PROBLEMS WERE AS FOLLOWS: LOUD CLUNKS WHEN SHIFTING FROM PARK TO REVERSE, WHILE FOOT PRESSING FIRMLY ON BRAKE PEDAL; TRANSMISSION HESITATES WHEN DOWN SHIFTING GOING AROUND CORNERS; AS A PASSENGER I FELT AS IF THE WHOLE CAR WAS LUNGING CAUSING DIZZINESS TO MOTION SICKNESS (DID NOT OCCUR WHILE I WAS DRIVING); HARD SHIFTS BETWEEN FIRST & SECOND; REAR WINDOW WIPER FAILED; POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACED WHICH CAUSED THE RACK & PINION SEALS TO FAIL, WHICH RESULTED IN A NEW RACK INSTALLED; EGR VALVE RUBBER BOOT KEPT POPPING OFF UNTIL I PLACED A SMALL HOSE CLAMP TO HOLD IT IN PLACE; CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYS ON EVERY SINCE 15,000 MILES; O/D BUTTON NEVER WORKED; O/D LIGHT FLASHED REPEATEDLY MINUTES PRIOR TO THE TRANSMISSION GOING OUT. NOW THE FORD DEALER SAID I NEEDED A NEW UPPER PLENUM, EGR VALVE, PFE, VALVE COVER GASKET, BATTERY CABLE AND THIS WAS FOUND WHILE CHECKING THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. I TOLD THEM TO FORGET IT! $3K IS ENOUGH TO SPEND ON A FIVE YEAR OLD CAR! THIS IS ALL I CAN THINK OF AT THIS POINT.

HEAT FAILED IN JULY, PIN TO FLAP IN EVAPORATOR CASE ASSEMBLY HAD BROKEN OFF. WHOLE ASSEMBLY HAS TO BE REPLACED REQUIRING TEARING APART THE DASHBOARD. PART ALONE COST $326.40 CHECK ENGINE LIGHT KEPT COMING ON - FOUND PRESSURE LEAK AT GASKET. HAD COMPLAINED ABOUT ENGINE SLUGGISHNESS FOR YEARS AND WAS TOLD THE COMPUTER COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG...AFTER GASKET WAS FIXED, NO MORE ENGINE SLUGGISHNESS. FORD WOULD NOT COVER SAYING THE PROBLEMS COULD NOT BE TIED TOGETHER TO JUSTIFY WARRANTY REPAIR!! POWER STEERING WENT. FIRST ATTEMPTED FLUSHING SYSTEM. AFTER FAILED AGAIN, REPLACED PUMP, AFTER THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM, HAD TO REPLACE ENTIRE SYSTEM. FORD REPLIED TO MY REQUEST FOR COVERAGE THAT THIS WAS THE FIRST CASE THEY HAD HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM IN A WINDSTAR AND TO KEEP MY RECEIPTS SO THAT I MIGHT GET CONSIDERATION IF THEY DO SOMETHING IN THE FUTURE. I FEEL THESE PROBLEMS ARE EXCESSIVE FOR A 50,000 MILE CAR...FORD AGREES BUT SAYS THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF PROBLEMS IS MUCH LOWER SO THEY STILL CLASS THEIR CAR AS VERY RELIABLE!!!

THIS SEEMS LIKE A MANUFACTURER CONCERN AND CERTAINLY A SAFETY CONCERN FOR ALL OF THOSE WHO TRANSPORT THEIR FAMILIES IN A WINDSTAR! YESTERDAY I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE FORD DEALER IN ARCADIA. DURING THE DRIVE TO THE DEALER THE VEHICLE APPEARED TO STEER CORRECTLY. HOWEVER, WHEN THE SERVICE MAN AT THE DEALER TRIED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE INTO THE STALL HE SAID THAT THE STEERING HAD FROZEN AND WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER. SUBSEQUENTLY THE DEALER, AFTER CHECKING THE POWER STEERING UNIT, DECIDED THAT THE PUMP IN THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM HAD FAILED CAUSING COMPONENT PIECES TO PASS THROUGH THE SYSTEM CAUSING THE STEERING FAILURE.THE DEALER SAID THE REPAIR WOULD REQUIRE REPLACING THE PUMP AND ALL COMPONENTS OF THE SYSTEM AT A COST OF MORE THAN A THOUSAND DOLLARS. VERY LOUD GRINDING JET ENGINE SOUND WHEN TURNING AND ALSO WHEN JUST IDLING. THE POWER STEERING FLUID WAS BLACK WITH METAL CHIPS INDICATING THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE PUMP OR RACK AND PINION. I TOOK IT TO A DEALERSHIP AND THEY FLUSHED THE PUMP. THE NOISE WENT AWAY FOR ONE DAY AND ON MY WAY OUT OF TOWN, IT STARTED AGAIN CAUSING ME TO LOSE POWER STEERING. THE NOISE WAS TERRIBLE AND I COULDN'T TURN THE WHEEL. I WAS ONE HOUR AWAY! I HAVE CHECKED AND THERE ARE 32 REPORTED CASES OF THIS SAME PROBLEM. THERE ARE SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH OUT NOW THREE YEAR OLD WINDSTAR THAT HAVE EITHER BEEN CORRECTED TEMPORARILY OR NOT CORRECTED AT ALL. THE MOST PERSISTENT ISSUES ARE WITH THE DRIVETRAIN IN PARTICULAR THE TRANSMISSION WHICH SHIFTS ERRATICALLY WHEN GOING AROUND CORNER OR CLIMBING HILLS AT LOW SPEAD. THE RECALL WAS PERFORMED AT 25K BUT THE TRANSMISSION CONTINUES TO OPERATE POORLY. FORD HAS OFFERED NO SOLUTION OR WARRANTY EXTENSION FOR THESE PROBLEMS. THE ENGINE PROBLEMS TO DATE REVOLVE AROUND THE INNABILITY TO USE REGULAR OR MID GRADE FUELS AS ADVERTISED ON THE VEHICLES STICKER, WE HAVE BEEN OFFERED A VALVE COVER REPLACEMENT FOR $500 BUT IN SPEAKING WITH OTHER WINDSTAR OWNERS THIS ONLY FIXES THE PROBLEM TEMPORARILY. ALSO IT SEEMS TO ME THIS IS A DEFECT THAT FORD SHOULD FIX NOT THE OWNER. THE OTHER PERSISTENT PROBLEM IS WITH THE DIREVER SIDE POWER DOOR, IN HOT TEMPERATURES THE DOOR DOES NOT CLOSE COMPLETELY AND POPS OPEN WHEN DRIVEING. THE DEALER HAS REPAIRED THIS SEVERAL TIMES AND WHILE BETTER THAT IN WAS IT CONTINUES TO BE AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM. WE ARE FRUSTRATED WITH THE PROBELMS THIS VEHICLE HAS EXPERIENCED INCLUDING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE POWER STEERING SYSTEM, RACK, PUMP AND HOSES AND MORE FRUSTRATING IS FORDS UNWILLINGNESS TO STAND BEHIND THE VEHICLE AND ITS FAULT. POWER STEERING HAS BEEN MAKING NOISE FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS. IT IS LOUD ENOUGH THAT OTHERS TURN AND STARE. IN ADDITION, IT NOW SHUDDERS AND GRINDS WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL AT A SLOW SPEED. IT IS NOT AS EASY TO STEER ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT AS HARD AS WITHOUT POWER STEERING. I HAVE BEEN CONTINUALLY TOLD FORD MOTOR IS INVESTIGATING THE PROBLEM BUT IT'S BEEN ALMOST TWO YEARS AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. I'VE HAD SEVERAL SURGERIES ON MY ARM/HAND AND IF I TOTALLY LOSE THE POWER STEERING FUNCTION, I'M NOT SURE I COULD MAINTAIN THE GRIP ON THE WHEEL IF I NEEDED TO DO SOME FAST TURNING. THE DEALER HAS TOLD US THAT THERE ARE MANY WINDSTARS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND THAT FORD DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT. I'VE ALSO BEEN TOLD IF I BUY ANOTHER NEW ONE, I MAY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AS THEY STILL HAVE NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM. WE ARE AT A LOSS AS TO HOW TO DEAL WITH THIS. WHO IN THE WORLD WOULD TAKE A TRADE IN CAR THAT COSTS $31,785 NEW BUT NOW SOUNDS LIKE A PIECE OF JUNK. IF I GO BACK TO THE DEALER AND BUY ANOTHER WINDSTAR, I MAY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ALL OVER AGAIN ACCORDING TO FORD. WE WERE OBVIOUSLY SOLD A DEFECTIVE NEW PRODUCT AND HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET THE PROBLEM CORRECTED FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS TO NO AVAIL. *AKTHE DEALER KEEPS TELLING US FORD IS WORKING ON THE PROBLEM AND WHEN THEY FIGURE IT OUT, THEY'LL FIX OUR CAR. IN THE MEANTIME, THE NOISE AND SHUDDERING/GRINDING ARE DRIVING US CRAZY. THE ONLY ASSISTANCE FORD MOTOR HAS OFFERED IS A $2,000 CUSTOMER APPRECIATION CERTIFICATE GOOD ONLY AT JOE MACHENS FORD FOR ANOTHER FORD PRODUCT. SINCE I HAVE NEED OF A MINI VAN AND THEY ARE TELLING ME THE 2001 OR 2001 WINDSTAR MAY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, I FIND THEIR OFFER INSULTING. HOSE WAS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT SENT FROM ANOTHER DEALER. HOSE HAS BUILT IN BEND CAUSING IT TO CONTACT EXHAUST MANIFOLD WHEN INSTALLED AND FAIL DUE TO HEAT. FAILED HOSE LEAKED FLUID ONTO CATALYTIC CONVERTER DIRECTLY BELOW AND FIRE RESULTED. DUE TO PROXIMITY TO A LOCAL CAR REPAIR SHOP FIRE EXTINGUISHERS WERE USED TO PUT IT OUT IMMEDIATELY. A 2ND HOSE OBTAINED FROM FORD HAS SAME BEND. LEE JARMON HAS REPLACED WITH 2ND HOSE AND RESTRAINED WITH NYLON CABLE CLAMPS FROM CONTACTING EXHAUST. I HAVE ADVISED TO USE STAINLESS STEEL CLAMP SINCE PROXIMITY OF EXHAUST WILL FAIL NYLON CLAMPS. THIS IS CLEARLY A DESIGN DEFECT WHICH WILL RESULT IN A FIRE TO THE NEXT PERSON WHO HAS A POWER STEERING HOSE REPLACED. MY WIFE AND 3 YEAR OLD WERE SAVED BY OUTSIDE OBSERVERS AND THE VEHICLE SAVED ONLY BY LUCK AND QUICK ACTING CAR REPAIR SHOP EMPLOYEES.

ON THE 21ST OF DEC 99, MY WIFE WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT IN OUR WINDSTAR. THIS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF THE HORN WERE USEABLE. THE WAY THE HORN BUTTON IS NOW YOU WILL HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME TRYING TO FIND THE EXACT SPOT TO PUSH TO GET THE HORN TO SOUND. WHEN TIME IS CRITICAL IN THE OUTCOME, SEARCHING FOR THAT EXACT SPOT ISN'T A PLAYER. THIS WAS THE CASE ON THE 21ST. WHEN AN INDIVIDUAL TRIED TO CROSS THE HIGHWAY HE HIT OUR VAN ON THE RIGHT SIDE CAUSING $6500 IN DAMAGE. PRIOR TO THE IMPACT SHE TRIED TO HIT THE HORN BUT COULD NOT FIND IT WHEN IT WAS NEEDED MOST. WE ARE ALMOST 100% POSITIVE THAT IF SHE COULD HAVE FOUND THE HORN SHE COULD HAVE SOUNDED IT, AND THE OTHER DRIVER WOULD HAVE SEEN HER COMING. LUCKILY MY 18 MONTH OLD AND 5 YR OLD DAUGHTERS WERE NOT WITH HER AT THE TIME. NOW I HAVE A $30,000 MINIVAN THAT WILL NEVER BE OF ANY VALUE AGAIN. SURE IT WILL BE FIXED, BUT WHO WOULD EVER WANT A VEHICLE LIKE THAT THAT HAS HAD EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. I GUESS THATS MY LOSS THOUGH.

FORD ELECTED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. THEN THE TECHNICIAN DISCOVERED THE STEERING PROBLEMS AND REPLACED THE RACK AND PINION. THEN DISCOVERED THE LOWER STEERING ASSEMBLY WAS DEFECTIVE. THEREFORE, THEY HAVE HAD MY NEW VAN IN THE SHOP FOR 3 WEEKS. *AK
