GOING DOWN THE ROAD TRACTION CONTROL WILL GO OFF AND ON . IT WILL MAKE THE STEERING VERY HARD. THEN WHEN YOU TURN THE ENGINE OFF. IT IS VERY HARD TO START UP . SOME TIMES YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR ABOUT TWO OR THREE HOURS THEN IT WILL START RIGHT UP. THE ELECTRIC SYSTEM IS VERY BAD. SOMETIMES WHEN THE TRACTION CONTROL STARTS TO HAVE A PROBLEM THE VAN IS VERY HARD TO EVEN KEEP IT IN CONTROL I'M DISABLED AND CAN'T AFFORD TO GET A BETTER VAN. I'VE TRIED TO TAKE IT BACK TO FORD BUT THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT. ALL THEY TALE ME IS TO GET ANEW ONE .BUT I CAN'T. THE POWER ON THE DOOR LOCKS ARE BAD THE LOCKS WILL GO LOCKED AND UNLOCK AS YOU DRIVE IT DOWN THE ROAD. BEEN DOING THIS FOR ABOUT. 3 YEARS. OR MORE. HAD IT IN TO FORD MANY TIMES.

WHEN THE ABS LIGHT IS OFF, THE ABS IS WORKING. I HAD MY MECHANIC FIX THIS FOR $850. THREE WEEKS LATER, THE NEW PART STARTED DOING THE SAME THING. I NEVER KNOW HOW TO BRAKE IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION BECAUSE THE ABS IS ON SOME OF THE TIME AND OFF SOME OF THE TIME.

AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE PROPERLY. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS UNDERGOING ROUTINE SERVICE, THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC ALSO DISCOVERED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE CONTROL ARM WAS DAMAGED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURES WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER AND LOCAL DEALER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE VIN WAS INVALID. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 200,000.

THE ABS WARNING LIGHT WILL STAY ON AND DISAPPEAR WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED AND SWITCHED OFF. THEN THE LIGHT WILL COME ON AGAIN AFTER THE VEHICLE IS MOVED.

THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO KEEP THE STEERING WHEEL UNDER CONTROL. THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP WHEN IT CRASHED INTO THE GUARDRAIL. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUFFERED BRUISES TO THE HIP THAT DID NOT REQUIRE MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL TOW YARD. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

THIS RELAY IS DEFECTIVE BY BEING ON THE BACK SIDE OF A HEAT-SINK PLATE THAT MAKES THE BOARD EXPAND AND CONTRACT ALLOWING FOR SOME, IF NOT ALL, OF THE SOLDER JOINTS BREAK. AS IT STANDS NOW I HAVE NO IDEA IF MY VAN IS SAFE TO DRIVE IN ITS CURRENT STATE WITH THE FAILURE OF THAT RELAY NOR WOULD I LIKE TO RISK IT. THE BREAKS DO WORK, BUT THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE THAT AS LONG AS I CAN STOP THE CAR I IGNORE THE ABS LIGHT. I NOW WANT TO KNOW IF THERE IS A RECALL FOR THIS. AFTER A LITTLE RESEARCH, I FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH WINDSTARS. THERE IS A SWITCH (CALLED THE BRAKE PRESSURE DEACTIVATION SWITCH) HOOKED TO THE BRAKING SYSTEM THAT DETECTS WHEN THE BRAKE HAS BEEN PUSHED AND STOPS THE CRUISE CONTROL ACCORDINGLY. WELL? THIS SWITCH IS KNOWN TO DEVELOP LEAKS, WHICH ALLOWS BRAKE FLUID TO RUN DOWN INTO THE WIRING AND CAUSE A SHORT. THIS BLOWS THE FUSE WHICH CONTROLS THE SPEEDOMETER, A/C, ODOMETER, ETC. *TR

THE BRAKE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL DEACTIVATION SWITCH (SCDS) (2B264) LOCATED UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER (BEHIND THE AIR FILTER) OVER TIME DEVELOPS A LEAK. THIS CAUSES A SHORT AND A FUSE TRIP, FUSE #10 IF THE ENGINE IS ON. THIS LEAK ALSO CAUSES BRAKE FLUID TO WICK DOWN TWO WIRES TO THE ABS BRAKE MODULE (2C219). THE FLUID ACCUMULATES ON THE (ALWAYS ON) POWER CONNECTORS FOR THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM WHICH ARE POWERED BY FUSES 101 AND 102 AND ARE BOTH 40 AMP. THE FLUID ATTRACTS MOISTURE, ROAD SALT AND LEADS TO A FIRE WHEN THE FLUID AND MOISTURE ACT AS CONDUCTOR BETWEEN THE HOT LEADS AND GROUND. THIS SWITCH HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF OTHER FORD RECALLS, JUST NOT MY WINDSTAR VAN YET. MY WIRING HARNESS WHEN INSPECTED WAS WET WITH BRAKE FLUID, INCLUDING THE CONNECTIONS AND THE INLINE FUSES, WHICH BASICALLY PERMITS ELECTRICITY TO JUMP PAST THE INLINE FUSES AND CONTINUE TO HEAT UP THE WIRING HARNESS. THE FUSES BODIES CRUMBLED WHEN INSPECTED. SINCE MOST DOUBLE SIDE DOOR VANS ARE PREDOMINANTLY DRIVEN BY LARGE FAMILIES, THE POSSIBILITY OF MULTIPLE FATALITIES PER VEHICLE DUE TO A HORRIFIC DEATH FROM BEING BURNT ALIVE IS A VALID POINT TO CONSIDER. MOST VEHICLE FIRES SPREAD SO FAST THAT UNSTRAPPING MULTIPLE SMALL CHILDREN FROM RESTRAINT SEATS WOULD TAKE AN INORDINATE AMOUNT OF TIME, ESPECIALLY WITH SMOKE INHALATION AND THE HEAT OF FLAMES TO PROHIBIT RESCUE. I DROVE TO A HOSPITAL WHERE SON WAS WORKING AND HE INVESTIGATED AND FOUND THE FROZEN-UP BRAKE. HE WAS ABLE TO EVENTUALLY GET IT FREED UP. A VEHICLE THAT ONCE WAS A VERY DEPENDABLE WORKHORSE HAS SUDDENLY BECOME ERRATIC AND DOWNRIGHT SCARY. *TR

BEGINNING IN 2002 THE ABS LIGHT APPEARED & AFTER SEVERAL TRIPS TO FORD AND NAPA MECHANICS, DIAGNOSIS WAS NEVER DETERMINED. THEN THE RECALL OF 2009 TO REPLACE THE MALFUNCTIONED PART OCCURRED ON 12/9/2009 - THE VERY NEXT DAY (DEC 10, 2009) THE ABS LIGHT AGAIN APPEARED. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE RECALL WORK WAS DONE AND THEY TOLD ME TO BRING THE VAN BACK AND THEY WOULD 'DIAGNOSE' THE PROBLEM FOR $120. MAY 2012 WE REPLACED THE AFFECTED ABS PART WITH OUR OWN FINANCES BECAUSE THE FORD DEALERSHIP TOLD US THAT THE AFFECTED PART WAS NO LONGER UNDER RECALL AND WAS NOT THEIR PROBLEM. IT SOLVED THE ABS LIGHT FROM COMING ON FOR ABOUT A WEEK. TO THIS DATE THE LIGHT COMES ON. WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE BASED ON THE REPORTS THAT IT WAS AN EXCELLENT FAMILY VEHICLE FOR SAFETY. I WOULD CONSIDER BRAKING AN IMPORTANT FEATURE, TOO. PLEASE HAVE FORD RESOLVE THIS MATTER IMMEDIATELY AND NOT JUST IGNORE THE MATTER. I HAVE LESS THAN 85,000 MILES ON THE VAN SO IT IS NOT DUE TO OVERUSE OR NEGLECT. ON SUNDAY 5/20/12, UPON STARTING OUR 2000 FORD WINDSTAR VAN, I NOTICED THAT THE SPEEDOMETER WAS NOT WORKING AND THE ABS (YELLOW) LIGHT WAS PERSISTENTLY ON. (HOWEVER THE RED BRAKE LIGHT THAT HAD BEEN SHINING ON THE DASHBOARD PERSISTENTLY FOR MANY, MANY MONTHS, EVEN AFTER RECALL SERVICING, WAS NOW OFF.) AS IS TYPICAL WITH THE WINDSTAR, THE DEACTIVATION SWITCH IS LEAKING BRAKE FLUID. THUS, CAUSING PROBLEMS WITH THE ABS AND CRUISE. UNFORTUNATELY, FORD ALREADY HONORED THE RECALL (09S09) ON THIS VEHICLE. AT THAT TIME THE DEACTIVATION SWITCH WAS NOT LEAKING SO THEY INSTALLED A WIRE HARNESS TO AVOID A FIRE WHEN IT DID START LEAKING. (WHY PUT ON A WIRE HARNESS? BECAUSE THEY KNEW THE SWITCH WAS GOING TO FAIL. WHY NOT JUST REPLACE THE SWITCH IN THE FIRST PLACE?) NOW FORD WILL NOT RE-OPEN THE RECALL TO REPLACE THE SWITCH AND FIX THE OTHER RELATED PROBLEMS. *TR
