CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM MODIFICATION RECALL NOTICE PROBLEMS. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED AFTER HE RETRIEVED THE VEHICLE FROM THE DEALER, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IDLING CORRECTLY. THE DEALER STATED THE WORK PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE, HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE IMPROPER IDLING ISSUE. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE VEHICLE HAD A VACUUM LEAK, AROUND THE MASTER CYLINDER. *JB

DRIVING HOME FROM WORK. GOING 20 MPH. HEARD A CLUNK, THEN A BIG BAM. FRONT TIRE WAS BLOWN. PULLED INTO AN EMPTY PARKING LOT. HAD VEHICLE TOWED BACK TO WHERE I WORK (TOYOTA DEALER). SERVICE LOOKED AT IT THE NEXT DAY. THE LEFT FRONT AXLE BROKE. IT ALSO NEEDS A NEW TIRE, SPRING, STRUT AND ABS SENSOR. I'VE HAD ALL THE RECALLS PERFORMED. I'VE ALWAYS DONE THE SERVICE NEEDED. REGARDING THE 2009-2010 PERFORM RECALL 09S09 OF THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH WIRE ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT. IT DID NOT WORK - IT NEVER WORKED, NOR DID IT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. WITHIN 2 DAYS OF THE INSTALLATION THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. TO THIS DATE BRAKE FLUID IS STILL LEAKING INTO THE COMPONENT. IT CAUSES MY BRAKE LIGHTS TO STAY ON UPON STOPPING AND TURNING THE CAR OFF - WHICH IF GOES UNNOTICED, IT DRAINS THE BATTERY. TO THIS DATE THE CRUISE CONTROL DOES NOT WORK. AND IT HAS ALSO REDUCED MY SAFE BRAKING DISTANCE. I HAVE VERY LOW MILES ON THE VAN - LESS THAN 81,000 MILES - SO IT IS NOT CAUSE BY HEAVY USAGE. FORD HAS FAILED TO FIX THE ISSUE WHICH IS THE LEAKING BRAKE FLUID ONTO THIS WIRING ASSEMBLY. THERE ARE MANY FORD WINDSTARS STILL IN USE THAT ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. MY MECHANIC SAID THAT MOST LIKELY THE ECM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED TO THE TUNE OF A $700 REPLACEMENT MODULE FROM FORD PLUS LABOR! MY FORD DEALER TOLD ME THAT THE 09S09 RECALL WORK WAS DONE SOME TIME AGO, BUT THIS PROBLEM WITH THE ABS LIGHT COMING ON CONTINUES. I AM VERY CONCERNED AFTER READING UP ON RECENT INFORMATION AS IT HAS BEEN REPORTED ON MULTIPLE SITES THAT LEAKING BRAKE FLUID REACHING THE ABS ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE HAS HAPPENED AFTER THE SUPPOSED RECALL REPAIR WAS DONE IN MANY INSTANCES, CAUSING FIRES AND OR THE LOSS OF THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM WORKING. I BROUGHT THIS VEHICLE ON 1/7/2012 FROM A FORD DEALERSHIP AND THE ABS LIGHT WOULD COME ON AFTER STARTING AND I ASKED THEM TO CHECK BEFORE I BROUGHT IT AND THEY SAID IT WAS JUST A SENSOR, SO WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE FORD REPAIR FOR THE TWO RECALLS OF THE REAR AXLE BRACKET AND SUBFRAME AND THEY CHECKED THE CAR AND SAID THE ABS MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE RELAY INSIDE WAS DAMAGED. BACK IN 2008 I WAS INVOLVED IN A FENDER BENDER (ABOUT $6,000 IN DAMAGES) WHEN MY ABS FAILED CAUSING ME TO SLIDE INTO ANOTHER CAR. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS MINOR ISSUE, BUT HAVE SINCE BEEN TOLD IT'S A MAJOR ISSUE WITH MANY OWNERS. I'VE FOUND THAT THE RECALL (09S09) DOES NOT ADDRESS ALL THE UNDERLYING ISSUES AND THE FORD DEALER WILL NOT FIX ALL OF THE ISSUES. ADDITIONALLY I WAS TOLD BY MY LOCAL FORD DEALER THAT THERE WERE NO OPEN ITEMS ON MY VAN FOR ABS. WHEN I INQUIRED WHAT THAT MEANT, THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING ON RECALL FOR ABS ON MY VEHICLE. I HAD NEVER HAD ANYTHING DONE TO THE ABS, SO IT WAS NOT BECAUSE IT WAS ALREADY FIXED. A WEEK AGO, I WAS ALMOST INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THE FAILURE OF THE ABS SYSTEM; I WAS ONLY GOING 40 MPH. I CONSTANTLY HAVE MY BRAKES CHECKED BECAUSE I HAVE TO PRESS THEM HARD TO WORK. THE REAR BRAKES ARE ALMOST NEW, AND THE FRONT (PADS AND ROTORS) ARE NEW SO THE BRAKES SHOULD WORK BETTER THAN THEY DO. LAST WEEK AS I WAS DRIVING AROUND TOWN AND MY INSTRUMENT PANEL STOPPED WORKING AND THE ABS LIGHTS WOULD NOT TURN OFF. THE NEXT MORNING I HAD TO TAKE MY SON TO ONE OF HIS ACTIVITIES AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WAS STILL NOT WORKING AND I NOTICED I HAD TO PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FLOOR. I WENT HOME AND NOTICED THAT MY CAR WAS LEAKING BRAKE FLUID. AFTER MUCH RESEARCH I FOUND MY VEHICLE HAD A RECALL. (09S09) I TOOK MY CAR IN THIS MORNING TO HAVE THIS RECALL FIXED. THIS DID NOT FIX MY INSTRUMENT PANEL. AFTER I GOT HOME I RESEARCHED WHAT THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE AND HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM FROM BRAKE FLUID LEAKING ON THE SOME OF THE WIRES. I CONTACTED FORD TO SEE IF THIS WOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE RECALL AND THEY EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THE RECALL ONLY COVERS THAT SPECIFIC PART. I AM VERY UPSET BECAUSE THE RECALL WILL ONLY COVER THE PART AND NOT THE DAMAGE IT HAS CAUSED. I WOULD LIKE TO FILE THIS COMPLAINT TO MAKE A RECORD OF THIS. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ABS LAMP ILLUMINATED, THE ABS SYSTEM TURNS OFF, AND ALL OF THE GAUGES ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WERE MALFUNCTIONING. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE ONLY OCCURRED WHEN THE WEATHER WAS HOT. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED WHO STATED THAT THE ABS MODULE WAS MOUNTED TO AN ALUMINUM BRACKET WHICH EXPANDS IN THE HEAT AND CAUSED THE CONNECTION TO BECOME DISCONNECTED. AS A RESULT THE ENGINE CONTROL UNIT AND HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 148,000.

TOOK FORD WINDSTAR IN FOR RECALL ON AXLES. UPON COMPLETION, ASKED SVCMAN ABOUT BREAK PADS. SVCMAN SAID FULL INSPECTION DONE AND BRAKES OKAY. CALLED REPAIRMAN 2 DAYS LATER ABOUT LOOSE STEERING AND FAULTY ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. CAR BEGAN TO VIBRATE WHEN BREAKING. TOOK CAR IN. SERVICE DEPT. SAID BRAKES BAD, CUSHINGS BAD, BALL JOINT BAD, THEN WHEN PLACING PADS ONE CALIPER STARTS LEAKING. ALL IN ONE RECALL EXPERIENCE. THIS IS HOW FORD MAKES ITS SERVICE MONEY, RECALL AND DESTRUCTION TO INCREASE SERVICE DEPARTMENT REVENUES. $600+ BRAKE JOB PAYS FOR THOSE RECALL AXEL KITS. MY REAL CONCERN IS WHAT ISN'T RUSTING ON THE FORD WINDSTAR? THE AXLES, ROTORS, CALIPERS ALL RUSTING. MY PROBLEM IS OVERSHADOWED BY THE KNOWLEDGE THAT THIS SAME DEALERSHIP SOLD ME THIS WINDSTAR WITH FULL KNOWLEDGE THAT IT HAD BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT CAUSING SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE FRONT RIGHT END. THE SAME ONE WITH THE BRAKING PROBLEM. HOWEVER FORD CONVENIENTLY FAILED TO REPORT THE ACCIDENT TO CAR FAX. I FOUND OUT AFTER PURCHASE WHEN A BODY SHOP WORKER SHOWED ME THE REPLACED BODY WORK. SINCE ONE DOESN'T SIT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT WHEN TEST DRIVING, I DIDN'T FIND OUT UNTIL LATER THAT THE PASSENGER SEAT HAD BEEN RIPPED FROM ITS STEEL FLOOR BOLTS. FORD REPLACED THE SCREWS AND STILL SAID NOTHING. I STILL FIND PIECES OF BROKEN WINDSHIELD GLASS IN THE SLIDING DOOR WELLS AND IN THE CHAIR SUPPORT CLAMPS ON THE FLOOR WHEN I REMOVE THE SEATS. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBERS: 10V385000 (SUSPENSION: REAR:AXLE: NON-POWERED AXLE ASSEMBLY), 00V351000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:INTERIOR/UNDER DASH) AND 01V261000 (VISIBILITY: WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER: MOTOR) AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS LEFT WITH THE DEALER FOR OVER A MONTH AND ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS RELEASED TO THE CONTACT, THE POWER STEERING WOULD ABNORMALLY PULL THE VEHICLE TO THE RIGHT. IN ADDITION, THE WINDSHIELD WASHER WOULD ONLY SPRAY TO ONE SIDE INSTEAD OF BOTH. THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE WARNING LIGHT WAS ALSO ILLUMINATING ON A CONSISTENT BASIS. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY ADVISED HIM TO JUNK THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 159,000.

I OWN A 2000 FORD WINDSTAR. LAST YEAR THE DEALERSHIP PERFORMED A RECALL RELATED TO LEAKING BRAKE FLUID AND ABS ISSUES. THIS YEAR I AM GETTING AN ABS LIGHT ON AND A CODE OF C1185. I WAS TOLD THIS CODE RELATES TO A BAD ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) FOR THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM. THIS IS THE SAME PART THAT THE BRAKE FLUID ISSUE WAS SUPPOSED TO CORRECT TO PREVENT VEHICLE FIRES. THE DEALER REFUSES TO REPLACE THE ECU AS PART OF THE RECALL (FREE OF CHARGE). THE ECU IS OVER $600. I AM NOW AT RISK OF FIRE AND MY BRAKING ABILITY HAS BEEN COMPROMISED. WE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING VARIOUS ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH OUR WINDSTAR AND UPON RESEARCH THROUGH THE INTERNET FOUND THAT OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS. THE CRUISE CONTROL HAS STOPPED WORKING FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS. THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS HAVE PERIODICALLY COME ON AND THEN WENT OFF. THE SPEEDOMETER WILL BE WORKING FINE AND THEN DROP TO ONLY 20 MPH EVEN THOUGH WE ARE EXCEEDING THAT SPEED. IT WILL THEN JUMP BACK TO THE PROPER SPEED AND THIS PROCESS WILL CONTINUE FOR A PERIOD OF TIME.

THE ABS WARNING LIGHT ON MY 2000 FORD WINDSTAR VAN HAS BEEN COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY AND STAYING ON FOR SOME PERIOD OF TIME (I.E., YEARS). REPORTED THIS SEVERAL TIMES TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE LIGHT IS ON, BUT CAN NEVER FIGURE OUT THE APPROPRIATE DIAGNOSTICS AS TO WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE SENSORS OR THE ABS SYSTEM AND THEY HAVE BEEN UNWILLING TO REPLACE ANYTHING. EVEN DURING THE LAST RECALL (CRUISE CONTROL WIRING HARNESS ISSUE) THE MECHANICS AT SHULTS FORD OF WEXFORD, PA ADMITTED THAT THE LIGHT WAS ON AND WOULDN'T GO OFF, AND THAT THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHY, BUT THEY MADE NO ATTEMPT TO REPLACE IT. LATELY, MY LIGHT HAS BEEN LIT UP MORE CONSTANTLY AND IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE BRAKING DISTANCES ARE GENERALLY LONGER. I ALSO LOST A/C POWER, ODOMETER READING, AND SPEEDOMETER READING. THE POWER STEERING AND BRAKING SYSTEMS SEEMED TO BE OUT. WHEN RESTARTING THE VAN, THE IDLE WAS VERY ROUGH. THE VAN DID RUN WITH THE TACHOMETER OPERATIONAL. I HOPE THE FUEL GAUGE, AND TEMPERATURE GAUGE WERE WORKING. AFTER RESEARCH, WE DETERMINED THE #10 FUSE WAS BLOWN. WHEN I TRIED TO REPLACE IT, THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM THE BACK OF THE AIR FILTER AREA. THERE IS A CONNECTOR UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER THAT HAS CORROSION, BRAKE FLUID AND APPEARS TO BE BURNT ON THE INSIDE. I HAVE HAD THIS VAN SINCE 2003, FROM DAY ONE THE ABS LIGHT HAS CAME ON WHILE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THEY WOULD REPLACE THE BRAKE PADS BUT THAT WORKED FOR ABOUT A MONTH THEN IT CAME BACK ON. THE BRAKE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL DEACTIVATION SWITCH (2B264) LOCATED UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER (BEHIND THE AIR FILTER) OVER TIME DEVELOPS A LEAK. THIS CAUSES A SHORT AND A FUSE TRIP, FUSE #10 IF THE ENGINE IS ON. THIS LEAK ALSO CAUSES BRAKE FLUID TO WICK DOWN TWO WIRES TO THE ABS BRAKE MODULE (2C219). THE FLUID ACCUMULATES ON THE (ALWAYS ON) POWER CONNECTORS FOR THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM WHICH ARE POWERED BY FUSES 101 AND 102 AND ARE BOTH 40 AMP. THE FLUID ATTRACTS MOISTURE, ROAD SALT AND LEADS TO A FIRE WHEN THE FLUID AND MOISTURE ACT AS CONDUCTOR BETWEEN THE HOT LEADS AND GROUND. 1. BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AND I HAD TO HAVE THE BRAKE RESERVOIR FILLED. 2. BRAKE FLUID WAS LEAKING FROM PRESSURE SWITCH. IT CAUSED AN ELECTRICAL SHORT, WHICH CAUSED A FIRE WHILE THE VAN WAS IN THE BASEMENT GARAGE. I NOTICED THE SMELL OF SMOKE WHILE UNLOADING THE VAN AND WAS ABLE TO LOCATE ITS SOURCE AND DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY CABLES. 3. I CALLED THE FORD DEALER I PURCHASED THE VAN FROM, THEY SAID THERE WAS NO RECALL ON MY VAN AT THIS TIME, AND THEY COULD SELL ME A PRESSURE SWITCH. I PURCHASED THE SWITCH. RIGHT FROM THE DAY I BOUGHT THE VAN, I HAVE HAD ONE ISSUE OR THE OTHER. HERE ARE SOME OF THE MAJOR ISSUES. 1. TIRES - MY NEW VAN HAD BUMPS ON ALL 4 TIRES. EVERY TIRE DEALER TOLD ME THEY WOULD BURST ON DRIVING. THEY WERE GENERAL TIRES. I WENT TO FORD MANY TIMES AND OPENED A CASE WITH THEM ALSO TO NO AVAIL. AFTER 12,000 MILES, I DECIDED TO BUY 4 NEW TIRES MYSELF FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY AT MY OWN EXPENSE. 2. AT 15,000 MILES, I HAD TO GET MY FRONT BRAKES CHANGED AS THEY HAD REACHED THEIR END OF LIFE. 3. AT 15,000 MILES, I ALSO HAD TO GET MY TRANSMISSION FLUID AS WELL AS DROP PAN CHANGED AS THEY WORN OUT 4. AT 30,000 MILES, I HAD TO GET MY FRONT BRAKE PADS AGAIN CHANGED (THESE WERE ALSO WORN OUT). WHAT IS SURPRISING IS THAT MY REAR BRAKES ARE FINE 5. AT 30,000 MILES, I ALSO HAD TO GET MY TRANSMISSION FLUID AS WELL AS DROP PAN CHANGED AS THEY WORN OUT 6. AT 40,000 MILES, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, FOR WHICH I HAD TO GET THE ENTIRE COOLING SYSTEM CHANGED AS WELL AS HAD MAJOR ENGINE WORK DONE TO REMOVE THE LIGHT. THE BILL WAS IN A FEW THOUSAND, AND I STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY DID TO GET IT ALL FIXED 7. AT 45,000 MILES, I HAD TO GET FRONT ROTORS AND BRAKES AGAIN. 8. AT 45,000 MILES I ALSO HAD TO GET MY FRONT TIE RODS CHANGED AS THEY WERE SQUEAKING 9. MY AUTOMATIC DOOR SENSOR HAS NEVER WORKED SINCE I BOUGHT THE VAN. IF YOU SHUT THE DOORS USING THE ELECTRONIC DOOR OPENERS, AND IF SOMETHING IS IN THE WAY, IT WILL STILL SHUT THE DOOR TRAPPING THE ITEM, RATHER THAN REVERSING THE PROCESS. 10. MY DRIVERS SIDE POWER SEATS HAVE JUST FAILED, AND I AM YET AGAIN FACED WITH A LARGE EXPENSE. I WILL NEVER BUY A FORD AGAIN

THE ABS SYSTEM STILL IS NOT WORKING RIGHT. THE MECHANICS SAY THAT THE ABS AND THE EMISSIONS COULD VERY WELL BE CAUSED BY THE SAME PROBLEM - A FAULTY COMPUTER. BOTH MODULES HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED TO BE BAD, HOWEVER, THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN UNWILLING TO USE A "POST WARRANTY ADJUSTMENT" TO HELP FIX THIS PROBLEM. IT SEEMS UNREASONABLE THAT WITH JUST OVER 60,000 MILES THESE TYPES OF PROBLEMS CAN BE CONSIDERED ANYTHING BUT MANUFACTURER DEFECTS.

I COMPLAINED OF A RATTLING NOISE SOUNDING LIKE CHAINS UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VAN , STARTING FROM 7,700 MILES TO THE PRESENT. EACH TIME TAKING IT IN AND BEING TOLD THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM, TO THEM FIXING SOMETHING AND THE NOISE STILL BEING THERE. I STATED TO THEM ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THAT THE VAN WAS NOT RIDING RIGHT. I COMPLAINED OF A LOUD GRINDING NOISE WHEN I TURNED THE WHEEL. AGAIN, THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG. THE BRAKES WHERE ALWAYS RUBBING AND THEY REPLACED THE PADS. I WAS TOLD SEMI-METALLIC PADS MAKE NOISES. THEY REPLACED THE COMPUTER, BECAUSE I COMPLAINED THAT UPON ACCLERATION THE VAN WOULD MAKE A PINGING NOISE. I WAS TOLD IT WAS COMBUSTION WITH THE GAS. I FOLLOWED THERE RECOMMENDATIONS ABOUT WHAT GAS TO USE, AND OTHER THINGS TO DO. IT STILL CONTINUED AND THEY STATED THAT THEY COULD DO NOTHING ELSE ABOUT IT. I OWNED A '98 WINSTAR AND NEVER HAD THESE PROBLEMS AND IT DID NOT DRIVE THE WAY MY 2000 DID. RIGHT NOW THE VAN IS SITTING IN MY GARAGE, WITH A BROKEN TRANSMISSION AND I CANNOT GET HELP FROM FORD.I LEASE THE VAN AND I REFUSE TO PAY FOR REPAIRS ON A VAN, THAT FORD SHOULD BE RESPOSIBLE FOR. MY LEASE IS ALMOST OVER AND THEY SHOULD BACK THEIR PRODUCT UP. I PUT ALOT OF EXTRA MONEY IN THIS VAN TO KEEP IT WELL MAINTAINED. I FEEL FORD SHOULD HELP ME.

BRAKE PEDAL GOES COMPLETELY TO FLOOR. VEHICLE STOPS, BUT IF IN AN EMERGENCY CONSUMER DOESN'T KNOW IF IT WILL STOP. DEALER TEST DROVE ANOTHER VEHICLE AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED. DEALER STATED THAT IT MUST BE NORMAL BECAUSE OTHER VEHICLE DID THE SAME THING. *AK

RIGHT FRONT BRAKE PAD BURNT OFF, ROTOR DAMAGED. UPON INSPECTION AT DEALER, THREE FRONT BRAKE PADS WERE INTECTED AND OPERATIONAL, BUT THINNED FROM NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THE FOURTH, RIGHT FRONT OUTSIDE PAD, WAS COMPLETELY GONE AND THE OUTSIDE ROTOR SUSTAN HEAVY DAMAGE. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE REP THAT IT WAS NORMAL TO WEAR MORE ONE SIDE THAN THE OTHER, HOWEVER ALL THREE INTACT PADS WERE VERY SIMILAR IN WEAR. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT FORD DESIGNED ITS PAD TO LAST ONLY 15,000 TO 20,000 MILES AND THEN THEY WERE SUPPOSE TO BURN OFF, WITHOUT ANY SRCATCH GAURD WARNING. ACCORDING TO THE REP, DAMAGE TO THE ROTOR IS NORMAL AND EXPECTED. THE ENTIRE SITUATION IS OBSURD. I EXPLAINED THAT BECAUSE OF THE UNEVEN WEAR OF THE PADS, THAT I BELIEVE THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE PISTON. I WAS THEN INFORMED THAT ONLY SHOPS SUCH AS SEAR, WALMART, AND OTHERS FEED CUSTOMERS THAT LINE SO THEY CAN REPLACE THE PART FOR MORE MONEY. HE STATED THAT NOTHING CAN GO WRONG WITH THE PISTON AND THAT IT WAS A MYTH.*AK

I EXPERIENCED BRAKE PROBLEMS ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS WITHIN A 12 HOUR PERIOD WITH MY 22,000 MILE 2000 WINDSTAR. I SMELLED A BURNING PLASTIC SMELL FOR APPROX 10 SECONDS AND THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT. I THEN HAD DIFFICULTY DURING A NORMAL STOP WHEN THE DISC BRAKES SEEMED TO BE EXPERIENCING ABS ACTIVITY. THE BRAKE PEDAL WASN'T FLUTTERING LIKE A NORMAL ABS STOP NOR WAS THEIR ANY MOISTURE ON THE ROAD. THIS HAPPENED AGAIN 10 MINUTES LATER. THE NEXT DAY AS I WAS TAKING IT TO THE SHOP I MADE A COMPLETE STOP AND A COUPLE OF SECONDS LATER THE CAR STARTED MOVING FORWARD. MY FULL PRESSURE WAS ON BRAKES AND IT WOULDN'T STOP. I USED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP. THERE WAS NO FLUID MISSING FROM THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER. THE BRAKE PEDAL DIDN'T MOVE DEEPER AS I PRESSED THE BRAKE. THE TACH DIDN'T INCREASE RPM. THE SHOP CHECKED THE ABS SYSTEM AND FOUND NOTHING. THERE WERE NO COMPUTER DIAGNOSTIC CODES FOUND. THEY DROVE IT 200 MILES AND COULDN'T REPLICATE IT. *AK

MY WIFE WAS COMING OFF THE FREEWAY OFF-RAMP AND REALIZED SHE HAD NO BRAKES. THE PEDDLE HAD NO GIVE SO SHE STOOD ON THE PEDDLE AND IT SLOWED HER DOWN ENOUGH TO MAKE THE TURN AND PULL INTO A PARKING LOT ACROSS THE STREET. SHE THEN CALLED TO GET THE VAN TOWED TO THE SHOP. SHE WAS VERY LUCKY THAT SHE DIDN'T HAVE TO MAKE ANY SUDDEN STOP ON THE FREEWAY BECAUSE SHE WOULDN'T HAVE HAD ANY BRAKES. SHE WAS ALSO VERY LUCKY THAT THERE WASN'T ANYONE IN FRONT OF HER ON THE OFF-RAMP. IT WAS THE POWER BOOSTER THAT FAILED AND THEN IT TOOK SEVERAL WEEKS FOR THEM TO GET THE PARTS AS IT WAS ON A NATIONAL BACK ORDER, WHICH LEAD ME TO BELIEVE ALOT MORE PEOPLE WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. THERE WAS NO WARNING THE BRAKES WERE GOING OUT AT ALL. THE TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN MAKING A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE SINCE ABOUT A MONTH AFTER WE BOUGHT IT AND DOESN'T SEEM TO SHIFT RIGHT. WE HAD IT CHECKED OUT IN THE SHOP AT THE TIME IT WAS IN FOR THE BRAKES AND THE REPLACED A BRACKET. THE VAN STILL DOES NOT SEEM TO SHIFT RIGHT AT THIS TIME.

VEHICLE HAS BEEN UNDRIVEABLE FOR OVER A MONTH, FORD HAS BEEN SLOW IN RESPONDING TO DEALERSHIP'S REQUEST FOR REPLACEMENT MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER. THREE PROMISED DELIVERY DATES HAVE COME AND PASSED. DEALER REPORTS OTHER WINDSTAR OWNERS ARE ALSO AWAITING REPLACEMENT MASTER BRAKE CYLINDERS FOR 2000 WINDSTARS, HOWEVER, INDICATIONS ARE THAT FORD IS AWARE OF A FAULTY DESIGN IN THE WINDSTAR'S BRAKING SYSTEM, AND WHILE THEY ARE CURRENTLY CORRECTING THE PROBLEM ON NEW VEHICLES COMING OFF THE ASSEMBLY LINE, THEY HAVE FAILED TO,, IN A TIMELY MANNER, ADDRESS A MOST DANGEROUS ISSUE IN VEHICLES ALREADY ON THE ROAD.
