REAR AXLE SNAPPED IN HALF WITH NO WARNING AS I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 40 MPH ON A BUSY ROAD. VERY DANGEROUS.

MOST IMPORTANT IS THE BRAKES HAVE BEEN CHANGED AND CHECKED. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THE BRAKES HAVE JUST FAILED AND I WOULD PUMP THEM ENOUGH JUST TO GET IN A SAFE LOCATION. AAA HAS HAD TO PICK ME UP AND WHEN THE BRAKES WHERE CHECKED THEY WERE FIND AND THE FLUID FULL. ALSO THE REAR JUST FELL BUT I HAD THAT REPAIRED BY A LOCAL REPUTABLE SHOP ON CANDLER RD, DECATUR/ THERE IS A RESIDUE ALL AROUND WHERE I PUT THE GAS IN. I'VE HAD THE SAME MECHANIC FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS AND HE SAYS THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES MAY BE FAULTY. THE BRAKE AND ENGINE LIGHT WILL NOT GO OUT EVEN WHEN REPAIRS ARE MADE ACCORDING TO THE CODES THAT COME UP. THE SCARIEST TIME WAS WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON UNIVERSITY AVE IN ATLANTA AND THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP AT THE LIGHT AT A NORMALLY BUSY INTERSECTION. I BEGAN BLOWING THE HORN AND THANK GOODNESS NO ONE WAS AHEAD OF ME. AAA TOOK THEIR SWEET TIME COMING AND BY THE TIME THEY GOT THERE THE PEDAL WAS BACK UP BUT I HAD THEM TO TOW ME HOME ANYWAYS. MY MECHANIC CHECKED IT AND ALL WAS FIND BUT HE WAS CONCERNED AND SO WAS I. I DID NOT CONTACT FORD BUT IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN AS I STARTED IT YESTERDAY MORNING AND THE BRAKES WERE ON THE FLOOR. THIS IS JUST TOO DANGEROUS. I TOLD MY MECHANIC NOT TO COME CHECK IT BEFORE CONTACTING FORD.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD WINDSTAR. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, AN INTERNAL FIRE ERUPTED NEAR THE REAR AUXILIARY AIR CONDITIONING. THE CONTROLS ASSOCIATED WITH THE WIRES AND THE COVERING WERE MELTED. THE CONTACT SMELLED STRONG PLASTIC FUMES IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER AND DISCOVERED THAT THE COVER AND WIRES MELTED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V608000 (SUSPENSION), BUT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,390.

THIS VEHICLE HAS SHUT OFF ON ME WHILE DRIVING SEVERAL TIMES. DURING THE LATEST EVENT WHICH OCCURRED WHILE GOING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH AND THE MINIVAN JUST SHUTS OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THERE IS NOT A STALLING WARNING OR ANYTHING. ALL LIGHTS APPEAR ON THE DASH AND IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER THE VAN WHEN IT HAPPENS. IN ORDER TO GET THE VEHICLE TO RESTART YOU HAVE TO TURN IT OFF WITH THE KEY AND THEN START IT UP AGAIN. I HAVE INVESTIGATED THIS PROBLEM ONLINE AND THERE ARE MANY, MANY PEOPLE COMPLAINING OF THIS. I'M VERY SURPRISED TO SEE THAT A RECALL HAS NOT BE MADE. WITH MOST OF THE COMPLAINTS I'VE SEEN ONLINE MANY OF THE MECHANICS DO NOT SEEM TO KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. IT'S SCARY TO SEE THAT MANY OF US ARE COMPLAINING OF THE SAME THING. DURING SOME OF THE OTHER INCIDENTS IT ALSO SEEMED TO HAPPEN DURING LOWER SPEEDS SUCH AS 5 OR 10 MPH HOWEVER TWICE IT HAPPENED GOING HIGHER SPEEDS, ONCE AT 25 MPH AND THE OTHER AT 30 MPH. IN APRIL 17TH 2015, MY SPEEDOMETER STARTED ACTING UP, WOULD NOT REGISTER THE SPEED I WAS TRAVELLING. I WOULD SHUT DOWN THE MOTOR AND WHEN I RESTARTED MOVING AGAIN THE NEEDLE WOULD JUMP AND START REGISTERING THE PROPER SPEED. WHEN I STOPPED AGAIN IT WOULD DO THE SAME THING AGAIN. I COULD PUT THE CRUISE ON AND GUESS WHAT SPEED I WAS AT, I WAS LUCKY THAT I DID NOT GET STOPPED FOR GOING TO FAST. LATELY, I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO SET THE CRUISE. AFTER GOING THROUGH A HEAVY DOWNPOUR AT ABOUT 20MPH THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. NOTHING WAS HUNG UP AND IT LATER CLEARED. WE FIGURED A SENSOR GOT WET BUT PERIODICALLY MAYBE STOPPING QUICKLY OR EVEN JUST TURNING OFF AUTO AND RESTARTING WITHIN 15 MINUTES MAY TRIGGER THE LIGHTS. THEY MAY STAY ON ENTIRE TIME OF TRAVEL UNTIL SHUTTING OFF CAR OR THEY MAY JUST GO AWAY WHILE DRIVING. NOT SURE IF IT'S A BRAKE PROBLEM OR ELECTRICAL BECAUSE MY TEMP NOTIFICATION FOR OUTSIDE TEMP ALSO DOES NOT WORK AND THE GAS GAUGE WILL SOMETIMES REPORT EMPTY AFTER FILLING UP AND ALSO I HAVE HAD ISSUES WHERE THE CRUISE CONTROL CAN NOT BE SHUT OFF BY BUTTON. A FEW WEEKS AFTER PURCHASING MY VAN I HAD ISSUES WITH MY BRAKE LIGHT AND ABS LIGHT COMING ON WHILE I WAS DRIVING. IT DID SEEM TO CAUSE ANY ISSUES AND THE LIGHTS WHEN OFF EVER TIME I TURNED MY VAN OFF AND THEN BACK ON. A FEW MONTHS AGO I WAS COMING UP TO A RED LIGHT SO NATURALLY I STARTED TO SLOW DOWN WHEN I TRIED TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP I KEPT GOING. THE PERFECT WAY TO DESCRIBE WHAT HAPPEN, IT FELT LIKE I HIT MY BRAKES ON A SOLID SHEET OF ICE. I COULD HERE THE ABS CLICKING AND ALSO FELT THE VIBRATION IN THE BRAKE PEDAL. THAT DAY IT WAS 95 DEGREES AND SUNNY. I ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT AND THE ONLY THINGS THAT STOPPED ME WAS THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. IT CONTINUED TO DO IT EVERY TIME I TRIED TO SLOW DOWN TO STOP THAT I REFUSED TO PUT MY CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE. LAST WEEK AFTER ALMOST CAUSING A FEW ACCIDENTS I ENDED UP PULLING THE MAIN FUSES TO THE ABS. SINCE I HAVE DONE THIS THE ONLY ISSUE I HAVE HAD IS MY SPEEDOMETER ACTING UP. I EXCHANGED SEVERAL EMAILS, CASE # CAS-4648613-L1X1R6 CRM:03259000003405, WITH THE FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONS CENTER ABOUT THIS MATTER UNTIL THEY TOLD ME TO CONTACT A DEALER. I SENT THE QUESTIONS TO MY DEALER ASKING FOR CORRECT INFORMATION, BUT THEY HAVEN'T ACKNOWLEDGED MY INQUIRY. WHAT I SUSPECT IS ALL WINDSTAR'S ON THE ROAD TODAY MAY BE OPERATING WITH ONLY ONE-HALF OF THE SCP (J1850 PWM) NETWORK OPERATIONAL. NOW THAT MANY OF THE DEFECTIVE ABS MODULES ARE FAILING, ARE OTHER WINDSTARS IN DANGER OF ENGINE FAILURE AT SPEED LIKE OURS? INTERMITTENT INCREASE IN BRAKING DISTANCE IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. DUE TO ABS SYSTEM FAILURE RELATED TO THE ECM CONTROL UNIT. INDICATOR AT TIME OF FAILURE "YELLOW ABS BRAKE LIGHT" AND "RED BRAKE LIGHT" ON DASHBOARD OF VEHICLE. RESULTING IN INTERMENT OPERATING OF ABS SYSTEM. THIS BECOMES A LARGE DRIVING HAZARD WHEN OPERATING THE VEHICLE DURING WINTER MONTHS WHEN ROADWAY IS OFTEN COVERED IN WET, SNOW AND ICE. THESE ROAD CONDITIONS ARE TYPICAL FOR MY WINTER DRIVING MONTHS IN THE CLIMATE AND AREA OF VEHICLE PURCHASED AND OPERATED. THE CAUSE OF THIS ABS SYSTEM FAILURE IS RELATED TO THE ECM CONTROL UNIT. THANKFULLY I WAS VERY CLOSE TO HOME AS THE WINDOWS STOPPED OPENING AND CLOSING, RADIO SHUT OFF, ODOMETER READING DISAPPEARED, CLOCK LIGHTS DISAPPEARED. I MADE IT TO THE DRIVEWAY, TURNED IT OFF AND IT DID NOT TURN BACK ON. CAME INSIDE AND STARTED TO SEARCH "2001 FORD WINDSTAR ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS ON"......I'M APPALLED AT HOW MANY COMPLAINTS I HAVE FOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS SAFELY MANEUVERED TO THE SHOULDER AND TOWED HOME. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THE ACTUATORS FOR THE DOOR LOCKS WERE BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

AT APPROXIMATELY 16:45 AFTER DRIVING 6 MILES THAT DAY, THE WINDSTAR VAN WAS STOPPED AND THE IGNITION KEY TURNED OFF. THE DELIVERY DRIVER WENT INSIDE HIS DESTINATION FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES. WHILE LOADING HIS CARGO, HE SMELLED SMOKE. LOOKING UP, HE NOTICED FLAMES COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT BETWEEN THE HOOD AND THE WINDSHIELD WIPER PLASTIC SHIELDING. USING AN ONBOARD 5 LB FIRE EXTINGUISHER, HE ATTEMPTED TO EXTINGUISH THE FLAMES BUT TO NO AVAIL. HE DIALLED 9-1-1 ON HIS PHONE. EMPLOYEES AT HIS DESTINATION ALSO NOTICED THE FIRE, AND CONTACTED THE LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT AS WELL. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FLAMES WITH SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE REAR PORTION OF THE ENGINE, THE FIRE WALL, BRAKE CYLINDER AND GLASS WINDSHIELD. A FEW MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR (MAY 2008) THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT STARTED TO COME ON, INTERMITTENTLY, EVERY COUPLE OF DAYS. IT WOULD COME ON WHEN I WENT AROUND A SHARP CURVE OR HIT A POTHOLE. I TOOK THE CAR TO 3 DIFFERENT MECHANICS, WHEN THE LIGHTS WERE NOT ON (NO ERROR CODES) AND WHEN THE LIGHTS WERE ON (EVERY ABS ERROR CODE CAME UP). I WAS TOLD BY ALL 3 MECHANICS THAT THE ABS SENSOR BOARD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE PART WAS GOING TO COST OVER $300 PLUS LABOR TO REPAIR. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT THE CAR WAS OK TO DRIVE BUT THAT WHEN THE LIGHTS CAME ON MY ABS WAS NOT WORKING AND THAT I SHOULD BE CAREFUL WHEN DRIVING IN RAIN OR WHEN ROAD CONDITIONS WERE SLICK BECAUSE I WOULD NEED EXTRA TIME TO PREPARE FOR A FULL STOP. I HAVE RESEARCHED ON THE INTERNET FOR THE SAME PROBLEM AND FOUND THAT THERE WERE MANY OTHERS WHO WERE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM AND HAVE TRIED MANY DIFFERENT FIXES WITH NO RESOLUTION, INCLUDING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ABS SENSOR BOARD. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 148,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 147,000.

NOW IS HAPPENING REGULARLY; SOMETIMES MULTIPLE TIMES PER DAY. CHECKED BRAKE FLUID LEVEL AND IT APPEARS TO BE OKAY. BRAKES APPEAR TO FUNCTION NORMALLY; NO SQUEALS, GRABBING OR SPONGINESS, NO APPARENT LOSS OF BRAKING ABILITY. CAR STOPS IN A STRAIGHT LINE. BRAKES HAVE BEEN SERVICED.

THE BRAKE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL DEACTIVATION SWITCH (SCDS) (2B264) LOCATED UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER (BEHIND THE AIR FILTER) DEVELOPED A LEAK. THIS CAUSED A SHORT AND A FUSE TRIP, FUSE #10 IF THE ENGINE IS ON. THIS LEAK ALSO CAUSED BRAKE FLUID TO WICK DOWN TWO WIRES TO THE ABS BRAKE MODULE (2C219). THE FLUID ACCUMULATED ON THE (ALWAYS ON) POWER CONNECTORS FOR THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM WHICH ARE POWERED BY FUSES 101 AND 102 AND ARE BOTH 40 AMP. THE FLUID ATTRACTS MOISTURE, ROAD SALT AND LEADS TO A FIRE WHEN THE FLUID AND MOISTURE ACT AS CONDUCTOR BETWEEN THE HOT LEADS AND GROUND. LIGHTS THAT STAY ON ARE: ABS,AND BRAKE, OD FLASHES. SPEEDOMETER AND ODOMETER DO NOT WORK. ALSO THERE IS NO HEAT OR AC. *TR

I HAVE A 2001 FORD WINDSTAR SEL WHICH WAS CURRENTLY SERVICED FOR THE BRAKE SWITCH RECALL. PLEASE NOTE THE SWITCH WAS FINE AND NO FLUID WAS FOUND ON CONNECTORS.THE ABS UNIT IN THE VAN HAS ISSUE WITH ACTIVATION AND DEACTIVATION PRIMARILY IN WARM WEATHER. WHEN TEMP EXCEED 70 DEGREES. COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE ABS UNIT, SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER, AND EMISSIONS SYSTEM RESULTS. THE FUSE LOCATED IN THE NUMBER 10 SLOT WILL CONTINUE TO FAIL, AND IN MY CASE WONT ALLOW ANOTHER FUSE TO WORK PROPERLY UNTIL THE TEMPS OUTSIDE ARE COOLER. HERE IS THE MAJOR PROBLEM IN THIS WHEN THE FUSE WILL ACCEPT, WHILE I'M DRIVING AND THE WEATHER STARTS TO WARM UP THE ABS ECM STARTS TO EXPAND THUS CREATING CONTACTS OR BREAKING CONTACTS INSIDE THE ECM. WHEN TALKING TO THE SERVICE DEPT AT CURRIE FORD ILLINOIS THEY ARE COMPLETELY UNAWARE OF THE PROBLEM. MY 2001 WINDSTAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENT. LAST SUMMER WHILE STANDING AND RUNNING IT ALL OF A SUDDEN HAD SMOKE RISING ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE VAN ON THE DRIVER SIDE, MOST LIKELY DUE TO THE LOW BRAKE FLUID SENSOR LEAKING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER. MY CRUISE CONTROL BECAME INTERMITTENT AND MY ABS LIGHT CAME ON AFTER HITTING A BUMP. A LOCAL SHOP STATED THAT A WIRE WAS LOOSE AND IT WOULD COST A $1000 TO FIND THE PROBLEM. TODAY I LEARNED THAT THE SWITCH IS LEAKING AND THE CONNECTOR TO THE WIRING HARNESS IS BURNED AND HAS BEEN SHORTED BY LEAKING BRAKE FLUID. WE COULD SMELL SMOKE IN OUR VAN, AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WAS GOING CRAZY (WARNING LIGHTS COMING ON, SPEEDOMETER FLUCTUATING BETWEEN SPEEDS). AS WE PULLED INTO OUR DESTINATION, ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT WENT ON, O/D LIGHT FLASHED, SPEEDOMETER AND ODOMETER READINGS WENT TO --------, AND WE SMELLED SMOKE. WAS ABLE TO DRIVE CAR TO BEACH FORD IN VIRGINIA BEACH WHERE WE WERE TOLD THAT BRAKE DEACTIVATION SWITCH WAS LEAKING FLUID DAMAGING WIRING HARNESS AND MANY OTHER COMPONENTS. WAS TOLD THAT WIRING HARNESS PART NEEDED WAS OBSOLETE. HUSBAND WAS SHOWN BURNED UP WIRING HARNESS AND ABS UNIT BY MECHANIC. THE WIRING HARNESS PLUG WAS MELTED INTO THE ABS UNIT. THESE PARTS REMAIN IN THE CAR, UNPLUGGED. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD BY FORD THAT THERE IS NO SUCH RECALL FOR OUR VEHICLE, ALTHOUGH WE HAVE RESEARCHED ON THE INTERNET AND BELIEVE THIS TO BE UNTRUE. THE CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING AND I THOUGHT IT WAS A FUSE BLOWN. HOWEVER, MY WIFE WAS AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND A BIG PUFF OF SMOKE CAME FROM UNDER THE HOOD OF THE CAR. WE TOOK IT TO A FRIEND WHO WORKED FOR A FORD DEALERSHIP. HE STATED THAT THE BRAKE FLUID FROM THE RESERVOIR HAD LEAKED ONTO THE MODULES BELOW AND THEY HAD SHORTED OUT. HE HAD SEEN THIS MANY TIMES BEFORE AND TOLD US IT WOULD BE ABOUT $1300 TO GET IT FIXED. AS OF TODAY, WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO AFFORD THE REPAIR. ON A VERY HOT DAY I WENT OVER A BUMP AND THE RED BRAKE LIGHT AND YELLOW ABS LIGHT CAME ON IN MY 2001 FORD WINDSTAR. I WAS PANICKED THAT THE BRAKES WOULD FAIL, BUT AFTER PARKING THE VAN AND RESTARTING IT, THE LIGHTS WERE GONE. THEY CAME BACK ON INTERMITTENTLY OVER THE NEXT COUPLE MONTHS. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER A COUPLE TIMES BEFORE THEY TOLD ME IT NEEDED A NEW ABS MODULE. I RESEARCH THE INTERNET TO UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM, AND WHY IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN IT IS HOT OUT. WE DECIDED TO POSTPONE THE $700 REPAIR, SINCE IT DOESN'T OCCUR WHEN IT IS COLD OUT. WE HAD NO PROBLEMS THIS WINTER, BUT NOW THAT IT HOT AGAIN, THE LIGHTS ARE AGAIN COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT WE WON'T HAVE ABS ONLY WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE ON. BUT THIS IS A BIG SAFETY CONCERN IN THAT WE DON'T KNOW IF WE WILL BE ABLE TO COUNT ON THE ABS SYSTEM WORKING WHEN WE NEED IT. FORD SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING THIS PROBLEM SINCE IT IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE THAT RESULTS FROM A DEFECTIVE PART THEY DESIGNED. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD WINDSTAR. WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. IN ADDITION, THE SPEEDOMETER AND ODOMETER GAUGES BLANKED OUT AND OTHER GAUGES BEGAN TO SPORADICALLY FLASH SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND A DIAGNOSTIC WAS PERFORMED. THE FAILURE CODES INDICATED THAT THE BRAKING SYSTEM WAS FAULTY DUE TO WATER OR FLUID ENTERING THE ABS CONNECTOR. BRAKE FLUID WAS FOUND LEAKING ONTO THE ABS MODULE AS WELL AS FLUID BUILD-UP IN THE CONNECTOR. THE ABS MODULE AND PUMP WERE REPLACED. THE DEALER ALSO ATTEMPTED TO REPROGRAM THE ABS MODULE, BUT WAS UNSUCCESFUL. THE VIN WAS UNABLE TO BE ENTERED INTO THE SYSTEM. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE LESS THAN 123,000.

FORD WINDSTAR 2001. THE BRAKE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL DEACTIVATION SWITCH LOCATED UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER OVER TIME LEAKED. THIS CAUSED A SHORT AND A FUSE TRIP. THIS LEAK ALSO CAUSED BRAKE FLUID TO WICK DOWN TWO WIRES TO THE ABS BRAKE MODULE. THE FLUID ACCUMULATED ON THE (ALWAYS ON) POWER CONNECTORS FOR THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM CAUSING THE ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) ECM (ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE) MODULE TO EXPAND IN THE ECM WHICH IS ATTACHED TO THE ECM MAIN CIRCUIT BOARD AT ALL POINTS. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A FIRE IN THE AUTOMOBILE IF IT WAS NOT CORRECTED. COST $1500.00 AT FORD DEALERSHIP TO CORRECT. 1. EVENT LEADING UP TO FAILURE: LEAKY BRAKE PRESSURE SWITCH AT THE BASE OF THE MASTER CYLINDER CAUSED BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK INTO THE SWITCH, WIRE HARNESS, AND ABS ECM. THIS EVENTUALLY CAUSED FAILURE IN THE BRAKE PRESSURE SWITCH AND ABS ECM WIRING. 2. THE SYMPTOM OF THE FAILURE IS INTERMITTENT YELLOW ABS AND RED BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS IN DASH THAT COME ON AND REMAIN ON SHORTLY AFTER DRIVE OFF. THIS ALSO CAUSES LOSS OF CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTIONALITY AS CRUISE CONTROL CAN NOT BE ACTIVATED. 3. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM YET. MY 2001 WINDSTAR WAS GIVING OFF INTERMITTENT BRAKE LIGHT WARNING. AFTER ABOUT 1 WEEK OF THIS GOING ON AND I COULDN'T FIND OUT WHY THIS WAS OCCURRING, MY VAN HAD THE ABS LIGHT, BRAKE LIGHT ON CONSTANT. MY OVERDRIVE LIGHT WAS FLASHING CONTINUOUSLY. MY SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER AND AIR CONDITIONING STOPPED ALL AT ONCE. BLOWN #10 15A FUSE. I LOOKED INTO SEE WHAT HAS GONE WRONG AND NOTICED THAT THE BRAKE PRESSURE RELIEF SWITCH THAT IS CONNECTED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER WAS DEFECTIVE AND LEAKING BRAKE FLUID ONTO THE TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR AND INTO THE WIRING HARNESS THAT CONTAINS THE WIRES FOR THE BRAKE PRESSURE SWITCH. THIS ACCUMULATION OF FLUID INTO THE WIRING HARNESS HAS CAUSED A SHORT. I CAUGHT THIS FAIRLY EARLY FOR IF I HAD NOT, THIS SURELY WOULD HAVE CAUSED A FIRE. I HAVE REPLACED THE BRAKE PRESSURE RELIEF SWITCH AND HAVE NOT TRACED THE SHORT AS OF YET. *TR

ON 08/09/2008, THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT AND THE ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD WHILE DRIVING AT 60 MPH UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS. THE VEHICLE THEN HAD TO BE JUMP-STARTED, AND I NOTICED A FAINT BURNING SMELL WHILE DRIVING. UPON EXITING THE VEHICLE, I NOTICED THE BURNING SCENT WAS EXTREMELY STRONG. THE VEHICLE IS NOW INOPERATIVE. THE BATTERY, PURCHASED AT SEARS ON 06/04/2005, CAN NO LONGER HOLD A CHARGE. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM HAS GONE HAYWIRE. FOR EXAMPLE, THE HEADLIGHTS NOW COME ON, DIMLY, WHEN THE SWITCH IS IN THE OFF POSITION. THE MILEAGE AT THE TIME OF THIS INCIDENT WAS 119,200. I HAD ONE PRIOR EXPERIENCE WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT AND THE ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATING ON THE DASHBOARD. IN JUNE 2007, BOTH WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON INTERMITTENTLY ONLY WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN REVERSE AND WERE ACCOMPANIED BY A LOUD SQUEALING SOUND IN THE BRAKES. TWICE, ON WET PAVEMENT, MY BRAKES DID NOT FUNCTION NORMALLY. ALTHOUGH I AVOIDED ANY COLLISION, ON ONE OCCASION I WAS FORCED TO PROCEED THROUGH AN INTERSECTION WHERE THE TRAFFIC LIGHT HAD JUST TURNED RED. AN INDEPENDENT GARAGE INSPECTED THE BRAKES AND COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. THE COMPUTER DIAGNOSTIC WAS CODE C1185. AS A PRECAUTION, THEY FLUSHED THE BRAKE SYSTEM. THEREAFTER, THE BRAKES FUNCTIONED NORMALLY. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT AND THE ABS LIGHT CAME BACK ON INTERMITTENTLY AGAIN IN MAY 2008. AGAIN, THIS HAPPENED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN REVERSE AND WAS ACCOMPANIED BY SQUEALING BRAKES. I HAD A FORD DEALERSHIP GO OVER THE VEHICLE AND RECEIVED A WRITTEN REPORT IN MAY 2008 THAT SHOWED THE BRAKES TO BE IN ACCEPTABLE CONDITION. THERE WERE NO FURTHER INCIDENTS UNTIL AUGUST 2008. BECAUSE OF THE COMPLAINTS I'VE READ ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE, I WILL MENTION THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH ON THIS VEHICLE HAS NOT WORKED IN QUITE SOME TIME. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME ABOUT WHAT HE DISCOVERED UNDER THE DASHBOARD, THE ABS MECHANISM DAMAGED THE ELECTRICAL HARNESS DUE TO ABS CONTROL FLUID LEAK. I THEN WENT TO ASSIST MY WIFE WITH GETTING OUR 5 YEAR OLD SON OUT OF THE BACK SEAT. AT THAT TIME I NOTICED FLAMES COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD ON THE LEFT SIDE. WE EXITED THE VEHICLE AND ANOTHER PERSON ASSISTED ME WITH GETTING VARIOUS BELONGINGS OUT. WE THEN WAITED FOR HELP TO ARRIVE. THE CAR WAS TOTALLY DESTROYED BY THE FIRE. THE INSURANCE COMPANY TOOK CARE OF WHAT THEY CONSIDERED THE VALUE (THIS VALUE WAS LOWER THAN THE NADA VALUE). I PROTESTED THIS BUT WAS TOLD THEY COULD NOT CONSIDER NADA DUE TO ITS ACCESSIBILITY ONLINE. THEIR VALUE RESULTED IN MY HAVING TO PAY $1000 TO FULFILL MY LOAN OBLIGATION AND RELEASE THE LIEN TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY. I THEN CONTACTED FORD AND REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO WHICH THEIR REPLY WAS THE INSURANCE COMPANY COULD PURSUE RESTITUTION BUT NOT MYSELF. WHY IS IT THAT I AM THE ONE THAT SUFFERS THIS GREAT LOSS? WE HAVE SPENT $2000 TO SATISFY THIS LOAN AND PUT A DOWN PAYMENT ON A NEW CAR. THIS CLEARLY IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF FORD. CARS DO NOT JUST CATCH ON FIRE FOR NO REASON. UPON STARTING THE 2001 FORD WINDSTAR VAN TUESDAY MORNING SEVERAL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS STAYED ON, INCLUDING THE BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS. THE DIGITAL ODOMETER DISPLAY CHANGED FROM NUMBERS TO DASHES AND THE SPEEDOMETER REMAINED AT "0" WHEN DRIVING. ALSO, THE AIR CONDITIONING (A/C ) STOPPED WORKING. I TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. IT TOOK THEM 2 DAYS TO FIND THE PROBLEM WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE A DEFECTIVE CRUISE CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH. THE SERVICE DEPT. MANAGER SAID WE WERE FORTUNATE THAT THE VAN DID NOT CATCH ON FIRE. HE TOLD US THAT THE SWITCH HAD COMPLETELY MELTED AND HAD CHARRED THE SURROUNDING WIRES. THIS PROBLEM IS VERY SIMILAR TO THE PROBLEM WHICH CAUSED THE MASSIVE FORD RECALL IN 2005, BUT FORD CLAIMS THAT THIS HAS NEVER BEEN A PROBLEM IN THEIR MINIVANS. THE FORD DEALERSHIP DID REPAIR THE DAMAGE AT A COST OF ABOUT $700. I DID NOT THINK TO ASK AT THE TIME IF I COULD HAVE THE BURNED SWITCH. ON MAY 2, 2007 WE DETECTED AN ODOR OF BURNING PLASTIC IN THE HOUSE. AFTER SEARCHING THE HOUSE I OPENED THE GARAGE AND A LARGE AMOUNT OF SMOKE FILLED THE HOUSE. THE OCCUPANTS LEFT THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR, AND I PROCEEDED TO OPEN THE GARAGE DOOR AND WENT OUT WITH PHONE IN HAND. WHILE I WAS STANDING OUTSIDE A FRIEND'S SON INDICATED THAT THERE WERE FLAMES UNDER THE VAN. I WENT BACK INTO THE HOUSE, GOT THE KEYS AND MADE AN ATTEMPT OF PUSHING THE VAN OUT OF THE GARAGE. AS I TOOK THE VEHICLE OUT OR PARK I NOTICED FLAMES COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AT THE WINDSHIELD. I DECIDED THAT I WAS NOT GOING TO BE A HERO, AND I GOT OUT OF THE VAN AND GARAGE. WE WERE AFRAID OF AN EXPLOSION SINCE THE GAS TANK WAS FILLED THAT DAY. I CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WHICH EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE BEFORE IT SPREAD TO THE HOUSE. I ATTEMPTED TO GET A WATER HOSE TO TRY TO CONTAIN THE FIRE, BUT AFTER FOUR STEPS, MY RIGHT KNEE ON WHICH I HAD SURGERY THREE WEEKS BEFORE IT GAVE OUT ON ME AND I ENDED UP HAVING TO GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM. THE VAN WAS TOTALED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY 2001 WINDSTAR PASSENGER REAR AUTOMATIC DOOR SINCE THE DAY I BOUGHT THE CAR BRAND NEW. THE DOOR WOULD CONSTANTLY CLOSE AND REOPEN. AN ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR SEAL HAD TO BE INSTALLED, THE SEAT BUCKLES AND REAR WIPER MOTOR COVER WERE REPLACED, THE ABS FAILED, AND RIGHT BEFORE THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH BOARD ILLUMINATED, AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED THE INTAKE MANIFOLD, SPEED SENSOR AND BRAKE SENSOR FAILED. *PH *JB RQ04011.*PCO

THE DASH SHORTED OUT. CAUSING THE HEATER, FAN, AND RADIO TO STAOP WORKING. I HAD ALREADY TAKEN THE VAN IN FOR THE EARLIER RECALL AND THE SEAL WAS REPLACED. THEN IT SHORTED AGAIN AND THIS TIME I HAD TO PAY FOR IT.

WHILE DRIVING THEFT LIGHT ON DASH COMES ON REAR WIPER COMES ON BY IT SELF AND ENGINE TURNS OFF LEAVING VEHICLE MOVING WITH NO POWER, NO STEERING, NO BRAKES. AFTER STOPPING VEHICLES IGNITION IS LOCKED OUT WITH NO POWER/NO CRANK.*AK

BRAKES FAILED ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS (REPAIR DATES: 3/22/02, 4/1/02 AND 4/15/02). FIRST, MY WIFE NOTED THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS GOING ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR BEFORE THERE WAS ANY RESPONSE. THE DEALERSHIP ADVISED THAT THIS WAS NORMAL. WE INSISTED THAT IT WASN'T, UNTIL THERE LEAD TECHNICIAN FOUND AND REPLACED A FAULTY HCU. THE SECOND FAILURE CAME WHILE I WAS DRIVING MY WIFE AND 6 MONTH OLD BABY FROM MO TO VA. WHILE ON THE WEST VIRGINIA TURN PIKE, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES FAILED AGAIN AND EVENTUALLY THE BRAKEING SYSTEM FAILED ALL TOGOETHER BY THE TIME WE REACHED OUR DESTINATION OF SUFFOLK VIRGINIA. BARTON FORD, IN SUFFOLK VA, REPLACED THE HCU AND THE ECU AND REPAIRED A BRAKE FLUID LEAK. THE THIRD INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING BACK TO MO. ONCE AGAIN THE BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND NORMALLY. ONCE BACK IN O'FALLON, MO. THE DEALERSHIP FOUND A AIR BUBBLE IN THE BRAKE LINE AND THEY REPROGRAMMED THE ABS MODULE. EACH BRAKE FAILURE ALSO AFFECTED THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM AND THE SPEEDOMETER. WE HAVE ALSO HAD TO HAVE ONE WINDOW REPLACED, THE DRIVERS SIDE SLIDING DOOR ADJUSTED, A SEAL INSERTED IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE DUE TO A RECALL ITEM, AND BOLTS TIGHTENED AT THE ENGINE CRADLE MOUNTS. RECENTLY, THE FUEL CAP INDICATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED FOR A PERIOD OF 5 DAYS FOR UNKNOWN REASONS AND WE ARE CURRENTLY UNABLE TO FILL THE GAS TANK TO ITS NORMAL CAPACITY. THIS VEHICLE IS UNSAFE AND HARDLY WORTH THE $27,220 THAT WE ARE PAYING FOR IT.

THIS VEHICLE HAS DIED WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, AT DIFFERENT TIMES OF TRIPS (LONG AND SHORT/HOT ENGINE NORMALLY). WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH IT DIED ONE TIME, CAUSING US TO ENTER THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC LANES AROUND A CURVE. THIS IS NOT GOOD FOR A FAMILY VEHICLE WHEN THERE IS AN ENTIRE FAMILY IN THE VEHICLE. WE HAVE NOTIFIED THE DEALER AND HAVE TAKEN IN FOR SERVICE, BUT IT CONTINUES TO DIE. WE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH OUR 1998 WINDSTAR THAT WAS TOTALLED IN A COLLISION (NOT PROBLEM RELATED). I DO NOT KNOW IF IT IS THE IGNITION SYSTEM OR THE FUEL SYSTEM. THIS VEHICLE HAS MULTIPLE RECALLS TO DATE. *AK

ONLY METHOD OF OPENING VEHICLE DOOR FROM OUTSIDE USING A KEY IS THROUGH DRIVERS SIDE DOOR OR USING REMOTE ENTRY SYSTEM. CONSUMER COMPLAINT IS THAT IF DRIVER'S DOOR IS INOPERABLE ,AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS INOPERABLE, THERE IS NO WAY TO OPEN VEHICLE FROM OUTSIDE. *AK THERE SHOULD BE AN OPTION TO MANUALLY OPEN EACH OF THE DOORS. ELIMINATING THIS OPTION WAS JUST TO SAVE A FEW DOLLARS ON THE PART OF THE MANUFACTUREE. *YH
