ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY. I DO NOT HAVE ABS FUNCTION WHILE THE LIGHTS ARE ON AND IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN MORE OFTEN IN WARMER WEATHER. WHEN VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF IT RESETS AND DOESN'T COME BACK ON UNTIL DRIVEN A FEW MILES AGAIN. ACCORDING TO SEVERAL FORUMS, THIS SEEMS TO BE HAPPENING ON A LARGE AMOUNT OF FORD WINDSTAR'S SIMILAR TO MINE OR ASSEMBLED IN CANADA.

I HAVE MY VEHICLE IN A SHOP TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. WHILE WORKING ON THE VEHICLE THE MECHANIC NOTICED THE FRONT RESERVOIR OF THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS EMPTY. UPON FURTHER EXAMINATION, HE FOUND THAT THE SPEED CONTROL SENSOR UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS LEAKING AND BRAKE FLUID IS LEAKING ON ALL THE COMPONENTS BELOW, I.E. TRANSMISSION, STEERING COMPONENTS, ETC. I LOOKED THE ISSUE UP ONLINE AND I FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS VERY ISSUE WITH FORD. WHEN I CHECKED MY VIN FOR ACTIVE RECALLS, THE NHTSA WEBSITE STATES THAT THERE ARE NO UNRESOLVED ISSUES WITH MY VEHICLE.

ROTTED REAR AXLE BEAM , 2002 FORD WINDSTAR , THIS VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A NEAR BY TOWN FORD DEALERSHIP : ACE MOTORS IN WOODBURY NJ , FOR THE REAR AXLE RECALL IN 2015 NOT SURE IF ANYTHING HAS BEEN REPAIRED OR NOT I WAS JUST TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED AND PASSED AND OK TO DRIVE BUT WHEN THE AXLE BROKE ON THE DRIVER SIDE I TOOK PITCHERS AND IT LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE HAS PUT ON SOME KIND OF SLAVE CLAMPS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE AXLE THAT I DON'T SEE ON OTHER FORD WINDSTAR MINI VANS ( SEE PITCHERS ) CALLED UP THE DEALERSHIP ACE MOTORS AND THEY SAID TO BRING IT UP TO THEM AND THEY WILL HAVE A LOOK AT IT AND MAYBE IT CAN BE PUT IN A CLAIM TICKET BUT AGAIN MAYBE NOT , IT'S HARD ENOUGH TO PUT ON A FLATBED TOW TRUCK WITH THE DAMAGE THAT IT HAS AND IF SOME REASON THEY DON'T PUT A CLAIM TICKET IN I CAN'T AFFORD TO KEEP TOWING THIS VEHICLE ALL OVER THE PLACE SO DEALERSHIP GAVE ME THE FORD I.N.C COMPANY PHONE NUMBER : 800-392-3673 , SO I CALLED THEM AND MORE LESS THEY TOLD ME THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO , ONE THING I'M HAPPY ABOUT IS WE WAS GOING SLOW IN MY HOME TOWN PULLING OFF THE MAIN ROAD ONTO A SIDE ROAD HEADING TO THE HOUSE WHEN IT HAPPENED AND NOBODY GOT HEART WHEN IT HAPPENED EVEN THOUGH IT WAS SO LOUD AND NOSY THINK IT BROKE A SHOOK AND BRAKE LINES . 8 / 8 / 2019

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED THE LOCAL DEALER THAT THE AXLE WOULD NOT BE COVERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 123,500. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

I HAVE DONE RESEARCH AND HIS CAN BE DANGEROUS AND VERY UNSAFE I KNOW IT CAN CATCH A FIRE AND ALSO THE BRAKES MAY LOCK UP.

CAR WAS TOWED TO GARAGE AND FINALLY FORD DEALER. THE BRAKE MODULE FAILED. MONTH OLD INPECTION, NO BRAKE PROBLEM. POLICE COMMENDED FAST THINKING TO AVOID A MAJOR ACCIDENT INVOVLING HITTING ANY OTHER VEHICHLES. I HAVE A POLICE REPORT BUT I DO NOT HAVE A SCANNER.

AM INFORMED BY MY MECHANIC THAT WHEN THESE LIGHTS ARE ON, THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM IS NONFUNCTIONING AND THEREFORE, A DRIVING HAZARD. WHEN THESE LIGHTS ARE ON, BRAKES ARE FUNCTIONAL BUT AS IN STANDARD, NON-ABS MODE. MANY OTHERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS SAME PROBLEM IN THE SAME MODEL VEHICLE OVER SEVERAL MODEL YEARS. SEEMS TO BE A MANUFACTURER DEFECT THAT SHOULD BE CORRECTED BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. THIS IS NOT A WEAR AND TEAR ITEM SINCE IT IS WIDELY REPORTED IN THIS MODEL AND MY VEHICLE HAS ONLY 84,000 MILES OF LIGHT DRIVING OVER 15 YEARS.

I MIGHT ALSO DRIVE THE CAR FOR 30-45 MINUTES BEFORE THEY TURN ON, AND WHEN I RESTART THE CAR, IT IS INCONSISTENT ON IF THEY COME BACK ON OR STAY OFF. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR QUITE SOME TIME AND IS NOW HAPPENING MORE ROUTINELY THAN WHEN IT FIRST STARTED.

THE PERSON I PURCHASED THIS VAN FROM (2ND OWNER) STATED THAT HE HAD ALL THE RECALLS COMPLETED ON THIS VEHICLE HOWEVER HE BELIEVED THAT THE DEFECT IDENTIFIED IN FORD SAFETY RECALL 09S09 FOR THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM HAS RESULTED IN DAMAGE TO THE ABS SYSTEM COMPUTER AND/OR ASSOCIATED HARNESS WIRING OR HARNESS CONNECTIONS. HE (2ND OWNER) DID NOT KEEP THE REPAIR ORDERS FOR ANY OF THE RECALL REPAIRS SO I DO NOT HAVE ANY RECORDS TO REVIEW. I BELIEVE THAT THE WIRE HARNESS, RELATED WIRE HARNESS CONNECTORS AND THE ABS SYSTEM COMPUTER ARE DAMAGED RESULTING FROM BRAKE FLUID LEAKING AND/OR CORROSION RELATED TO THE DEFECT FOUND IN FORD SAFETY RECALL 09S09. AFTER NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS TO THE CAR DEALER SHIP I PURCHASED THE WINDSTAR FROM THE GARAGE, THEIR MECHANIC REPLACED O-RINGS IN THE ENGINE TO FIX THE MAP CENSOR IN JAN 2012 AS WELL. IN FEBRUARY 2014 I INVESTED A LITTLE OVER 1,800.00 IN REPAIRS TO MY MECHANIC FOR; TUNE UP, STRUTS AND SHOCKS, BRAKES ALL AROUND, WHEEL BUSHINGS, AND A WHEEL ALIGNMENT. I KEEP THE VAN WELL MAINTAINED WITH OIL CHANGES AND LATELY MY RADIATOR IS LOOSING FLUID. BACK IN 2008 MY ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS WOULD COME ON WHILE DRIVING TO WORK. I HAD THE PROBLEM LOOKED AT AT MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP. THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS THE ECU/HCU CONTROL BOX. BUT BECAUSE MY EXTENDED WARRANTY DID NOT WANT TO PAY FOR THE 1200.00 BILL BECAUSE THEY FELT THAT ONLY THE ELECTRONIC SIDE AND NOT THE HYDRAULIC SIDE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. SO I THEN WENT TO ANOTHER FORD DEALER AND THEY DIAGNOSED AND REPLACED ONLY THE ELECTRONIC SIDE. THERE WERE 3 TIMES THAT I HAD TO PAY THE $100.00 DEDUCTIBLE TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM DIAGNOSED, WHICH WAS EVENTUALLY FIXED(NO MORE LIGHTS) BY THE SECOND DEALER. THEN IN JUNE OF 2013,NOW WITH 116,563 MILES ON IT,MY GAUGE CLUSTER STARTED TO ACT FUNNY. ALL OF A SUDDEN WHEN I WAS DRIVING, THE GAUGE NEEDLES WOULD MOVE OUT OF CONTROL. EVENTUALLY THE TAC NEEDLE PEGGED ITSELF ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT AND THE SPEEDOMETER QUIT WORKING. I TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE GAUGE CLUSTER WITH A REBUILT ONE FOR $789.00. SINCE THAT TIME I HAVE NOT HAD ANY MORE ISSUES WITH THE GAUGE CLUSTER. I WAS TOLD BY THE TECH THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE WINDSTARS. I ALSO HAVE A 2001 FORD WINDSTAR THAT HAS 105,000 MILES ON IT THAT I AM THINKING ABOUT SELLING SO I DON'T HAVE TO ENDURE THE COST OF A GAUGE CLUSTER IN IT. IT HAS LESS THAN 65,000 MILES AND I'M SCARED TO DRIVE IT BECAUSE THE ELECTRONIC SYSTEM MIGHT SUDDENLY CAUSE OTHER PROBLEMS AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THE ELECTRONIC SLIDING DOORS ALREADY WOULD NOT OPEN UNLESS THE ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING. ON JUNE 16, 2006, WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A PARKING LOT, SOMEONE INFORMED US THAT MY 2002 FORD WINDSTAR WAS SMOKING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. AN INTERNAL FIRE OCCURRED, DAMAGING THE WIRING HARNESS AND WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR. UNAWARE TO THE CAUSE OF SAID FIRE THE DAMAGED PARTS WERE REPLACED. THEN OTHER PROBLEMS STARTED TO ARISE, THE VEHICLE CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING, THE ABS/BRAKE LIGHT REMAINED ON AND THE SPEEDOMETER WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY (NOT ACCURATELY READING). THE LOCAL FORD DEALER WAS INFORMED OF THE BEFORE-MENTIONED PROBLEMS INCLUDING THE INTERNAL FIRE THAT HAD OCCURRED , AT THE TIME OF THE INITIAL BRAKE PRESSURE DEACTIVATION SWITCH RECALL. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE BRAKE PRESSURE DEACTIVATION SWITCH INDEED WAS LEAKING AND THAT THEY SUPPOSEDLY CHECKED THE ABS CONTROL MODULE. STILL THE ABS/BRAKE LIGHT REMAINED ON AND THE SPEEDOMETER DID NOT WORK PROPERLY. ON 3/14/14 THE WINDSTAR WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL GARAGE TO DIAGNOSE THE ABS/BRAKE ISSUES AGAIN. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT SAID UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE ABS MODULE WAS SUBSEQUENTLY REMOVED AND EXAMINED THE CONTROL MODULE (3/21/2014). THE ABS MODULE SUFFERED AN INTERNAL FIRE AND THE WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR WAS MELTED AND DAMAGED. ALSO FOUND WAS EVIDENCE OF SIGNIFICANT BURNING AROUND THE PINS AT THE CONNECTIONS. THIS EVIDENCE INCLUDED THE BLACKENED FLUID, SEVERE DISCOLORATION, AND LIFTED TRACES, ALL OF WHICH ARE CLEARLY APPARENT IN PHOTOS OF THE MODULE INTERIOR. THE LOCAL DEALER REFUSED TO REPAIR OR REPLACE THE MODULE UNDER THE RECALL CLAIM, STATING THAT IT WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL, AND THAT SAID RECALL WAS CLOSED. FORD HAS BEEN NEGLIGENT IN THIS MATTER AND LUCKILY THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO TODAY, HAS NOT BECOME A RUNAWAY FIRE EVENT AND BURNED TO THE GROUND!! AT THIS TIME THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED, AND IS SITTING IDLE. I HAVE KEPT THE DAMAGED CONTROL MODULE FOR EXAMINATION. *TR

A FEW YEARS AGO, THE ABS LIGHT STARTED COMING ON UNPREDICTABLY AND INTERMITTENTLY IN RAINY WEATHER AND THE BRAKES WOULD LOSE POWER DRAMATICALLY INCREASING BRAKING DISTANCES. BECAUSE THE PROBLEM WITH BRAKING WAS SPORADIC AT FIRST, THE MECHANIC THOUGHT IT WAS MERELY AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM CAUSING THE ABS LIGHT TO COME ON. THE FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR SUCH A PROBLEM. I HAVE HAD THE BRAKES REPLACED, AND ALTHOUGH THE PADS AND ROTORS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION, THE BRAKING PROBLEM HAS WORSENED. THE ABS LIGHT AND INTERMITTENT BRAKE FAILURE IS MUCH MORE FREQUENT. I HAVE RECENTLY LEARNED THAT OTHER WINDSTAR OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM AND THAT FORD RECALLED 1999-2003 WINDSTARS FOR ABS BECAUSE THE ECU MASTER RELAY HAS A BAD SOLDIER JOINT THAT FAILS CAUSING THE INTERMITTENT CONTACTS. WHEN I BROUGHT THAT INFORMATION TO MY FORD SERVICE MANAGER, I WAS TOLD THE RECALL DID NOT INCLUDE MY PARTICULAR VIN. HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED IN MI FOR THE AXLE RECALL. WAS WITHOUT THE VEHICLE AND HAD LOANER CAR FOR 2 MONTHS. AFTER GETTING VEHICLE BACK THE LIGHTS WERE ON MORE CONSISTENTLY THE DEALERSHIP NOTED THIS BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY REASON FOUND FOR THIS. BY SUMMER OF 2011 THESE LIGHTS WERE STAYING ON ALMOST CONSTANTLY AND THIS CONTINUED FOR A YEAR, AFTER INVESTIGATING THIS ISSUE ONLINE AND SEEING THAT OTHER OWNERS HAVE INVESTED HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TRYING TO GET THE LIGHTS TO GO OFF AND STAY OFF ONLY TO HAVE THEM KEEP COMING BACK ON WE HAVE DECIDED TO FILE A COMPLAINT AS THIS ISSUE IS NOT A SIMPLE FIX AND OBVIOUSLY IS HAPPENING IN HUNDREDS OF VEHICLES. OUR PROBLEM HAS PROGRESSED TO WHERE THE SPEEDOMETER AND ODOMETER GO WILDLY UP AND DOWN WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND WE ARE NEVER SURE OF OUR SPEED. THIS VEHICLE IS VERY UNSAFE BUT WE NEED IT AS WE HAVE 5 CHILDREN AND CAN NOT AFFORD TO BUY A NEW ONE. THE POWER WINDOW ON PASSENGER SIDE AS WELL AS THE POWER SLIDING DOORS DO NOT WORK. APPROXIMATELY A WEEK AGO, THE #10, 15 AMP FUSE WAS BLOWN. REPLACED IT WITH AN APPROVED FUSE AND BLEW RIGHT AFTER I STARTED VAN UP. WHEN I ADDED FLUID, I NOTICED THERE APPEARED TO BE A LEAK OF FLUID ON THE FRONT, UNDERSIDE OF THE MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER. I HAD A FRIEND WHO IS A MECHANIC LOOK AT IT AND HE TOLD ME THE MASTER CYLINDER COULD BE BAD, BUT LOOKED LIKE THE PRESSURE SWITCH WAS WHERE THE LEAK WAS ORIGINATING. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, HE NOTICED THERE WAS A WIRE HARNESS THAT WAS SOAKED IN BRAKE FLUID AND BENEATH ANOTHER ONE WAS WET. HE ATTEMPTED TO CLEAN BOTH OF THEM AND REPLACED FUSES, BUT AFTER USING THE BRAKES THE FIRST TIME(GOING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY) I HEARD A "POP" AND THE FUSE WAS BLOWN AGAIN. THIS PARTICULAR FUSE CONTROLS THE ODOMETER, SPEEDOMETER, THE ABS LIGHT ON DASHBOARD. ABS LIGHT COMES ONE WHEN THE AIR TEMP IS 90 DEGREE PLUS AND STAY ON UNTIL THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF. IT WILL SAY OFF FOR MAYBE A FEW MINUTES TO A COUPLE HOURS. IN THE PAST 24 HOURS, THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON TWICE IN THREE TRIPS. LAST YEAR, WHEN IT WAS HOT, IT DID ABOUT THE SAME. AS I UNDERSTAND IT, WHEN THE LIGHT COMES ON, MY BRAKE'S ANTI-LOCK IS NONOPERATIONAL WHILE THE LIGHT IS ON AND SCARES ME UNTIL I CAN SAFELY PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE. *JS

I WAS DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED (65MPH) IN HEAVY TRAFFIC WHEN THE ABS (YELLOW) AND BRAKE (RED) LIGHTS SUDDENLY CAME ON. I CONTINUED DRIVING SINCE THERE WAS NO PLACE TO STOP. WHEN I HAD TO SUDDENLY STOP, STOPPING DISTANCE WAS REDUCED BY LOCK UP OF THE BRAKES. A FEW MINUTES LATER, I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE, TURN OFF THE IGNITION, RESTART THE VEHICLE AND BOTH LIGHTS TURNED OFF. THE LIGHTS CAME ON LATER IN THE TRIP. THIS ON AND OFF ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT SCENARIO WAS REPEATED FOUR TIMES THAT DAY, LUCKILY NO MORE SUDDEN HARD BRAKING STOPS WERE NECESSARY. IT WAS VERY HOT THAT DAY WITH TEMPERATURES NEAR 90 DEGREES. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY THREE DAYS LATER AND DESCRIBED THE SITUATION ABOVE. THE VEHICLE WAS TEST DRIVEN BY THE SHOP THROUGHOUT ONE DAY. THE SHOP COULD NOT GET THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS TO COME ON DURING DRIVING AS I HAD DESCRIBED. BRAKING ACTION WAS NORMAL FOR THE VEHICLE. ON MY SERVICE INVOICE, THE SHOP REPORTED A STORED COMPUTER CODE C1185 - ABS POWER CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION, BUT NO PROBLEM FOUND. THE SHOP ASKED THAT I MONITOR THE SITUATION AND BRING THE VEHICLE BACK IN WHEN THE ABS LIGHT CONSISTENTLY IS "ON" SO THAT THE PROBLEM CAN BE DIAGNOSED CORRECTLY. RELUCTANTLY I AM GOING TO FOLLOW THE SHOP'S ADVICE. *TR

THE BRAKE LIGHT AND EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON ALL OF A SUDDEN AND THE BRAKING PERFORMANCE DEGRADED AND THE BRAKING DISTANCE REQUIREMENT IS LONG. THIS COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE. AS I UNDERSTAND, THE ISSUE IS THE DEFECTIVE SENSOR WITH THE SOLDIER DISTANCE EXPANDED DUE TO THE HEAT. *TR

ABS AND BRAKE FAILURE LIGHT CAME ON. BRAKES STILL WORK, BUT THE ABS SYSTEM IS SOMETIME SHUT OFF. LIGHTS RESET AFTER A FEW WEEKS, BUT THEN COME ON AGAIN AT RANDOM TIMES NOT RELATED TO BRAKING. ABS CODE ARE NUMEROUS AND ALL HIT AT THE SAME TIME AS THE C1185 CODE. THE OTHER CODES ARE FOR THE INPUT AND OUTPUT VALVE FAILURE ON EACH WHEEL. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR OVER TWO YEARS NOW AND I SEE THAT MANY OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM THAT POINTS TO THE CONTROL MODULE AND POSSIBLY BAD CIRCUIT BOARD SOLDER JOINTS. VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN FOR REAR AXLE CORROSION RECALL. *TR

PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN JANUARY 2012 AND HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH IT. ACCORDING TO FORD ALL RECALLS HAVE BEEN DONE ON THIS VEHICLE BUT HERE IS A LIST OF THE ISSUES WITH THE VAN: ABS LIGHT COMES ON, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON, VAN HAS NO CRUISE CONTROL AT ALL, AND LAST FRIDAY I COULD NOT PUT THE VAN IN GEAR. AFTER THE FORD DEALERSHIP "REPAIRED" THE SOLENOID FOR THE VAN NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN THERE IS CURRENTLY NO REAR BRAKE LIGHTS. THIS VAN IS LESS THAN SAFE TO BE ON THE ROAD AND HAVE SEEN THAT SOME OF THE RECALLS WOULD HAVE SOLVED THE SPEED CONTROL ISSUE BUT THE FORD FACTORY WILL NOT ANSWER ANY OF MY QUESTIONS. TAKE A LOOK ONLINE AND YOU WILL SEE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUES WE ARE HAVING AND IT WAS BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF FORD THAT WE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUES AS THOUSANDS OF OTHER PEOPLE SO THIS IS BEYOND A PROBLEMATIC VEHICLE.THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY SITTING AT THE LOCAL FORD DEALER WHILE THEY TRY AND FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE LIGHT SYSTEM. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP TWICE SINCE WE HAVE OWNED IT AND THIS IS COSTING US HUNDREDS (SO FAR) TO FIX ISSUES THAT EVERYONE WITH THIS VEHICLE IS HAVING. THE LATEST ISSUES HAVE LED TO US BEING WITHOUT A VEHICLE FOR ALMOST A WEEK AND WE HAVE A DISABLED CHILD IN THE HOME AND THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. *TR
