TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED AN ABNORMAL NOISE. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE WHEEL WAS ABNORMALLY TILTED INWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE AXLE WAS FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 12V193000 (POWER TRAIN). THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. UPDATED 03/26/14*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED CRACKS IN THE REAR AXLE, WERE NOT VISIBLE AND RE-ENFORCEMENT REPAIRS WERE DONE, TO THE REAR AXLE AND FRONT SUBFRAME LOWER CONTROL ARM. HOWEVER, THE REPAIR FAILED, WHILE THE CONSUMERS HUSBAND WAS DRIVING. FORD WOULDN'T PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. THEY STATED THEY HAD ALREADY FULL-FILLED THEIR OBLIGATIONS, WHEN THEY MADE THE RE-ENFORCEMENT. ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS BEGAN COMING ON MY DASH. THEY WILL GO OFF PERIODICALLY, AND THEN COME BACK ON. THE FIRST DATE THIS HAPPENED WAS IN 2010. I DRIVE A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. I TOOK IT TO THE AUTO SHOP RIGHT AWAY AND WAS QUOTED OVER $1,000 TO FIX IT. I ASKED WHAT THE PART DOES AND WAS TOLD THAT IT MOSTLY CONTROLS THE ABS SYSTEM. I ASKED HIM WHAT I COULD DO IF I DID NOT FIX IT, BECAUSE THERE WAS NO WAY I COULD AFFORD THAT. HE SUGGESTED TO PUMP MY BRAKES WHEN BRAKING. THE SYSTEM IS DANGEROUS WHEN TRYING TO MAKE A FAST STOP. THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM DOES NOT FUNCTION AS DESIGNED BY FORD. THE ISSUE IS CAUSED BY HEAT IN THE ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) ECM (ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE) (2C219) MODULE CAUSING EXPANSION OF A LARGE ALUMINUM PLATE (HEAT SINK) IN THE ECM WHICH IS ATTACHED TO THE ECM MAIN CIRCUIT BOARD AT ALL POINTS. THE EXPANSION OCCURS WHEN THE UNIT GETS WARM ESPECIALLY IN THE SUMMER MONTHS AND CAUSES INTERMITTENT ELECTRICAL CONNECTION IN THE UNIT BECAUSE THE FRAGILE BOARD IS BEING STRETCHED AND MALFORMED. THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS HAD SIMULTANEOUSLY BEEN COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY SINCE SOMETIME IN 2008 (A 5-YEAR-OLD VEHICLE), OCCURRING WITH GREATER FREQUENCY AS TIME WENT ON. HOWEVER, SINCE ABOUT MARCH 2011 THEY NOW COME ON EVERY DAY, USUALLY WITHIN 2 MINUTES OF STARTING THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO ACCIDENTS OR DAMAGE LEADING UP TO THIS FAILURE--THE PROBLEM IS INHERENT IN THE MODULE. AFTER ABOUT THE FIRST YEAR OF INTERMITTENT FAILURE I HAD A FORD DEALERSHIP TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM; HE TOLD ME IT WAS DUE TO A BAD ECM FOR THE ABS (WHICH I ALREADY SUSPECTED, HAVING DONE SOME PRIOR RESEARCH); WE HAD A CONVERSATION ABOUT IT CONCERNING THE ALUMINUM HEAT SINK PLATE; HE TOLD ME IT WAS A BAD DESIGN, IT SHOULD'VE NEVER BEEN DESIGNED THAT WAY. IN MAY 2011, AFTER THE WARNING LIGHTS WERE COMING ON DAILY, I HAD SOME OTHER SERVICE WORK DONE AT A FORD DEALERSHIP; IN SPEAKING WITH THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE I ASKED ABOUT THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS, HE TOLD ME THE ABS ECM WAS BAD, THAT MANY OF THEM GO BAD LIKE THAT BECAUSE IT'S A BAD DESIGN AND HE HAD IN FACT JUST REPLACED ONE THE WEEK BEFORE FOR A CUSTOMER--IT WAS $1,400. THESE SAME MODULES WERE USED ON EARLIER MODEL YEARS OF THE WINDSTAR, AND ALL MODEL YEARS USING THIS MODULE HAVE HAD FAILURES. WHEN THE MODULE IS NOT FUNCTIONING, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM- DOES NOT ENGAGE. WHEN THE SYSTEM FAILS, THIS CAN LEAD TO UNEXPECTED WHEEL LOCK-UP AND UNCONTROLLED SLIDING, INCREASED BRAKING DISTANCES, AND GREATER RISK OF INJURY ACCIDENT. THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH ABS, AND AS A SAFETY FEATURE IT MUST NOT FAIL--JUST LIKE SEATBELTS, AIRBAGS AND TMPS. WITH THE SYSTEM FAILING DAILY NOW, I FEAR THIS COMING WINTER THE VEHICLE WILL NOT RESPOND AS EXPECTED WHEN BRAKING ON SNOW-COVERED ROADS. AS I WAS DRIVING FROM PORTSMOUTH NH TO SOMERSWORTH NH I NOTICED THAT THE SPEEDOMETER STOPPED WORKING,THE ODOMETER HAD NOTHING BUT LINES, NO NUMBERS, THE OVERDRIVE LIGHT STARTED BLINKING AND THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS CAME ON. I ALSO NOTED THAT SMOKE HAS BEEN COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD WHEN I STOP AT A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. THESE SYMPTOMS MATCH WHAT HAS BEEN RECORDED ON LINE AS FOLLOWS, THE BRAKE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL DEACTIVATION SWITCH (SCDS) (2B264) LOCATED UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER (BEHIND THE AIR FILTER) OVER TIME DEVELOPS A LEAK. THIS CAUSES A SHORT AND A FUSE TRIP, FUSE #10 IF THE ENGINE IS ON. THIS LEAK ALSO CAUSES BRAKE FLUID TO WICK DOWN TWO WIRES TO THE ABS BRAKE MODULE (2C219). THE FLUID ACCUMULATES ON THE (ALWAYS ON) POWER CONNECTORS FOR THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM WHICH ARE POWERED BY FUSES 101 AND 102 AND ARE BOTH 40 AMP. THE FLUID ATTACTS MOISTURE, ROAD SALT AND LEADS TO A FIRE WHEN THE FLUID AND MOISTURE ACT AS CONDUCTOR BETWEEN THE HOT LEADS AND GROUND. THIS SWITCH HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF OTHER FORD RECALLS, JUST NOT THE WINDSTAR VAN YET. BELOW IS A PICTURE OF THE SWITCH IN QUESTION. NOTICE THE FLUID THAT LEAKED ON THE PART BELOW IT. THIS SWITCH WILL CAUSE CRUISE CONTROL PROBLEMS, SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER AND ABS BRAKE SYSTEM PROBLEMS. I WILL NOT ALLOW OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS TO OPERATE THIS VEHICLE AND IT APPEARS THAT THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY WILL NOT FIX THIS ISSUE EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE, RECALL #09S09 BECAUSE THEY INDICATE THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER BUT THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE OR DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT SPOKEN WITH THE MANUFACTURER. IN 2009 OUR BRAKE AND ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND HAS STAYED ON. WE RECEIVED THE FORD WINDSTAR RECALL FOR THE LEAKING CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH. WE HAD THIS DONE IN FEB. 2010. WE WENT BACK TO FORD ON JULY 7 2010 BECAUSE OF SMOKE AND LEAKING BRAKE FLUID. THEY DID NOTHING. I DID NOT REPLACE THE SWITCH RIGHT AWAY AND ON AUGUST 1ST WE TOOK A TRIP OVER A MOUNTAIN PASS. IT STARTED LEAKING VERY BAD ON THIS TRIP. SO BAD THAT THE LOW BRAKE FLUID LIGHT CAME ON. WE GOT HOME I REPLACED THE SWITCH AND REMOVED THERE JUMPER DUE TO THE JUMPER WAS SOAKED IN BRAKE FLUID. ALSO TOPPED OFF FLUID. STILL BRAKE LIGHTS ARE ON, AND HAVING A FAMILY IN A VAN OVER MOUNTAIN PASSES, THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF BY FORD. *TR

THIS FAILURE APPEARS TO OCCUR AFTER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF HIGHWAY DRIVING, IE. 3+ HOURS. AFTER THE INITIAL FAILURE, THE YELLOW AND RED LIGHTS WILL BOTH ILLUMINATE INTERMITTENTLY, SOME TRIPS AT THE BEGINNING OTHERS BY THE END (THESE ARE LOCAL AND NOT EXTENDED). WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE ILLUMINATED (INTERMITTENTLY), THEY ARE BOTH ON FOR THE ENTIRE TRIP -- JUST SOME TRIPS THEY ARE ON AND OTHERS THEY ARE NOT. BRAKE FLUID LEVELS ARE NORMAL AND THERE APPEARS TO BE NO ADVERSE AFFECTS OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM OPERATION. IN ADDITION, THERE WERE DEFECTIVE AUTOMATED POWER LOCKS ON ALL FOUR DOORS. AN AUTHORIZED MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE DOOR LOCK FAILURE. ECM MODULE DEFECTED ACCORDING TO THE BRAKE SHOP. THE BRAKE SHOP PULLED THE CODES AND ALL THE CODES SAID TO REPLACE THE ECM MODULE. THE REASON I TOOK MY 2003 WINDSTAR TO THE BRAKE SHOP BECAUSE MY BRAKE LIGHT, ON BY DASH, COMES ON AND MY BRAKES MAKES NOISE LIKE THE BRAKES ARE ON BUT THEY ARE NOT. SINCE WE GOT OUR 2003 FORD WINDSTAR NEW IN DECEMBER, 2002, WE HAVE ALWAYS HAD AN ISSUE WITH CONSTANTLY NEEDING TO FILL THE BRAKE FLUID. THE FORD DEALERSHIP SAID THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. IN FEB, 2008 OUR ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK IT TO A FIRESTONE REPAIR SHOP, THEY FIXED AND AKJUSTED THE BRAKES AND THEY SAID IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE SENSOR AND THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES WHEN THEY WERE FINISHED, JUST THE LIGHT WAS ON AND WE NEEDED TO REPLACE THE SENSOR. AS IT WAS EXTREMELY COSTLY AND THEY TOLD US THERE WAS NOTHING FURTHER WRONG WITH THE BRAKES, WE CHOOSE NOT TO REPLACE IT. IN JUNE 2008 OUR CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING. WE AGAIN TOOK IT IN AND THEY COULD NOT FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG. TWO WEEKS AGO, AUGUST, 2009, WE HAD ALL NEW BRAKES PUT ON. JUST YESTERDAY, AUGUST 21, 2009, OUR BRAKE FLUID WAS ALMOST EMPTY. DURING WARM WEATHER, THE AMBER ABS INDICATOR AND THE RED BRAKE LIGHT ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ARE ILLUMINATED INTERMITTENTLY. WHEN THESE LIGHTS ARE DISPLAYED, THEY REMAIN ON UNTIL THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF. WHEN RESTARTED, THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS DO NOT DISPLAY IMMEDIATELY. THEY TYPICALLY RETURN WITHIN 15 MINUTES OF DRIVING TIME IN WARM/HOT WEATHER. SELDOM DOES THIS OCCUR DURING COLD WEATHER. NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE BRAKING SYSTEM OTHER THAN ROUTINE BRAKE PAD/ROTOR SERVICE. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN RECURRING SINCE THE VEHICLE PASSED THE 50,000-MILE MARK, AND EVEN THOUGH I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED, IT HAD A FORD EXP WARRANTY TO 60,000 MILES. THE DEALER AND THE FORD REP I CONTACTED BOTH SAID THIS PROBLEM WAS NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. FURTHER RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET HAS REVEALED THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON THESE VEHICLES THAT MAY BE CAUSED BY A LEAKING PRESSURE SWITCH AT THE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR WHICH WICKS BRAKE FLUID DOWN TO THE ECU, CREATING A POSSIBLE SHORT CIRCUIT AND CHANCE FOR A FIRE. OTHERS SUGGEST THAT THE ECUS FAIL BECAUSE OF DELAMINATION OF THE MAIN CIRCUIT BOARD DUE TO INCOMPATIBLE EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION RATES OF THE MATERIALS USED. THE FAILURE OF THE ECU APPEARS TO STEM, IN EITHER CASE, FROM DESIGN FLAWS. THE ABS IS RENDERED INOPERATIVE IN BOTH CASES, CREATING AN UNACCEPTABLE SAFETY HAZARD IN THESE 4200-LB. EVER SINCE SPRING 2006, OUR 2003 FORD WINDSTAR HAS HAD AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WITH THE ABS SYSTEM WHERE THE ABS WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASH WILL ILLUMINATE. THE SERVICE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT WILL ALSO ILLUMINATE EVEN THOUGH IT IS FUNCTIONING NORMALLY. AT FIRST THIS WAS VERY ALARMING BUT NO LEAK OR PROBLEM WAS FOUND WITH THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM AS THE FLUID LEVEL WAS CORRECT AND THE PEDAL IS FIRM. ALL THE ABS WHEEL SENSORS HAVE BEEN CHECKED FOR CONTINUITY, THEIR DC RESISTANCE FALLS IN THE ACCEPTABLE RANGE, AND THE CONNECTORS APPEAR TO BE SOUND. I CURRENTLY HAVE LIVED WITH THE PROBLEM FOR A COUPLE YEARS AND DISCOVERED THAT THOUSANDS OF OTHER WINDSTAR OWNERS ARE REPORTING EXACTLY SIMILAR FAILURE SYMPTOMS WITH THEIR VEHICLES. A COMMONLY REPORTED CAUSE IS THE ABS CONTROL UNIT WHICH I CURRENTLY CAN NOT AFFORD TO REPLACE AT A COST OF $700 OR MORE. A WINDSTAR OWNER WHO HAS HAD THE TIME TO INVESTIGATE THIS OUTLINES A CONDITION HE HAS OBSERVED, WHERE THERE IS A THERMAL COEFFICIENT OF EXPANSION MISMATCH BETWEEN AN ALUMINUM PLATE AND AN FR4 (FIBERGLASS/COPPER) CIRCUIT BOARD INSIDE THE MODULE. THE REPAIR SHOP/DEALER ADVISED THAT THE COST TO REPAIR THE BRAKE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL DEACTIVATION SWITCH WOULD BE BETWEEN $300 & $400 AND IT WOULD BE BETTER (LESS COSTLY) TO WAIT UNTIL A RECALL WAS ISSUED. THE BRAKES ON MY 2003 FORD WINDSTAR HAVE MULTIPLE ONGOING PROBLEMS. NO MATTER HOW OFTEN I GET THE PADS, AND ROTORS CHANGED, THEY SQUEAL AND SOUND LIKE THEY NEED REPLACING. TL*THE CONTACT WAS RENTING A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP. THE CONTACT NOTICED SMOKE AND THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL. SHE HAD TO APPLY PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. SHE CALLED THE RENTAL COMPANY AND THEY STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM. THEY CONCLUDED THAT THE BRAKE SYSTEM POSSIBLY NEEDED TO BE SERVICED. THE VIN AND SPEED WERE UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,221.

THE VEHICLE BRAKES STARTED GOING TO THE FLOOR WHEN WE FOUND THE SWITCH AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS LEAKING AND DEFECTIVE. WE RAN OUT OF BRAKE FLUID. BOTH THE ABS LIGHT AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT COME ON IN MY 2003 FORD WINDSTAR ONCE THE VEHICLE GETS WARMED UP. I HAVE CONDUCTED EXTENSIVE RESEARCH AFTER HAVING A MECHANIC GIVE ME THE CODE THAT THE VAN IS THROWING (C1185) AND FOUND THE FOLLOWING: THE BRAKE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL DEACTIVATION SWITCH (2B264) LOCATED UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER (BEHIND THE AIR FILTER) OVER TIME DEVELOPS A LEAK. THIS CAUSES A SHORT AND A FUSE TRIP, FUSE #10. THIS LEAK CAUSES BRAKE FLUID TO WICK DOWN TWO WIRES TO THE ABS BRAKE MODULE (2C219). THE FLUID ACCUMULATES ON THE POWER CONNECTORS FOR THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM WHICH ARE POWERED BY FUSES 101 AND 102 AND ARE BOTH 40 AMP. THE FLUID ATTRACTS MOISTURE, ROAD SALT AND LEADS TO A FIRE WHEN THE FLUID AND MOISTURE ACT AS CONDUCTOR BETWEEN THE HOT LEADS AND GROUND. THIS SWITCH HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF OTHER FORD RECALLS, JUST NOT THE WINDSTAR VAN YET. BELOW IS A PICTURE OF THE SWITCH IN QUESTION. NOTICE THE FLUID THAT LEAKED ON THE PART BELOW IT. THE ISSUE OF THE ABS BRAKE LIGHT IS CRITICAL IN THAT THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM DOES NOT FUNCTION AS DESIGNED BY FORD. THE ISSUE IS CAUSED BY HEAT IN THE ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) ECM (ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE) (2C219) MODULE CAUSING EXPANSION OF A LARGE ALUMINUM PLATE (HEAT SINK) IN THE ECM WHICH IS ATTACHED TO THE ECM MAIN CIRCUIT BOARD AT ALL POINTS. THE EXPANSION OCCURS WHEN THE UNIT GETS WARM ESPECIALLY IN THE SUMMER MONTHS AND CAUSES INTERMITTENT ELECTRICAL CONNECTION IN THE UNIT BECAUSE THE FRAGILE BOARD IS BEING STRETCHED AND MALFORMED. I HAVE A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR LX AND THE ABS LIGHT AND THE BRAKE LIGHT ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CONTINUALLY COME ON. THE BRAKE GAUGE LIGHTS CONTINUE TO COME ON AND OFF AT ALL TIMES AND FORD SAID IT WAS DUE TO THIS SWITCH BUT IT WOULD NOT AFFECT THE BRAKES ALTHOUGH AT TIMES THE BRAKES WILL START SKIDDING LIKE THE ABS IS WORKING ON DRY ROADS AND SOME TIMES THE BRAKES SEEM TO WORK HARD. CHECKING THE INTERNET OUT FOR PARTS I FOUND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME PROBLEM AND EVEN SOME VANS CATCHING FIRE DUE TO THIS ABS MODULE SWITCH CATCHING FIRE. FORD HAS RECALLED SEVERAL OTHER VEHICLES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM BUT WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE A PROBLEM WITH THE 03 VANS. I SHOULD NOT BE FORCED TO PAY FOR A REPAIR THAT FORD KNOWS IS THERE FAULT. THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD AND SHE HIT A POST (THANKFULLY NOT A PERSON). PROBABLY DID ABOUT A $1000 IN DAMAGE. THE REASON I AM WRITING IS THAT THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. THE FIRST TIME WAS ABOUT A MONTH AFTER WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE. THE SAME TYPE OF SITUATION IN A PARKING LOT. AT THAT TIME I CALLED THE FORD DEALER WHERE WE BOUGHT THE CAR AND INQUIRED IF THERE HAD BEEN ANY BULLETINS ABOUT SUCH A PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD NO. NOW MY WIFE COULD HAVE BEEN AT FAULT BUT I BELIEVE THERE IS A REAL PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM AS I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME SITUATION MYSELF. WHEN LETTING OFF THE GAS PEDAL AT LOW SPEED AND THEN TOUCHING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THERE FEELS LIKE A LOSS OF BRAKE PRESSURE MOMENTARILY. WHAT THEN HAPPENS IS THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSES TO THE LEVEL OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE DRIVER THEN ENGAGES BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR AT THE SAME TIME. INSTEAD OF STOPPING, THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD BECAUSE THE ACCELERATION OVERRIDES THE SOFT (TEMPORARY) BRAKE PEDAL PRESSURE. I'M THINKING THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM PRESSURE AT IDLE WHEN THE CAR IS MOVING. HENCE THE PEDAL DEPRESSES FURTHER THAN USUAL AND THE SIDE OF THE DRIVER'S FOOT THEN ALSO PUSHES THE ACCELERATOR DOWN IN ADDITION TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE FACT THAT THIS HAPPENED WHEN THE CAR WAS NEW AND STILL HAPPENS TODAY MAKES ME THINK IT IS A ENGINEERING PROBLEM COUPLED WITH A DESIGN PROBLEM. THE PEDALS MAY ALSO BE TOO CLOSE TOGETHER WHICH INCREASES THE LIKELIHOOD OF THIS PROBLEM HAPPENING. NOTE: THE CAR'S BRAKES WORK FINE OTHERWISE AND WE DO NORMAL SERVICE ON THE VEHICLE. *JB

ADVANCE TRAC SYSTEM ACTIVATES FOR NO REASON, THIS CAUSES THE BRAKES TO APPLY BRINGING THE VAN TO A HALT. I HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER FOUR TIMES. ONCE THEY REPLACED THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE MODULE. ALTHOUGH THIS HAS OCCURRED NUMEROUS TIMES, THEY CANNOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I AM ABLE TO SHUT THE SYSTEM OFF AND CONTINUE DRIVING. THIS WILL HAPPEN SHORTLY AFTER I MAKE A RIGHT OR LEFT TURN AND IT IS INTERMITTENT. *JB

DT: THE CONTACT STATED THE TRACTION CONTROL AND THE ANTI LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM WORKED TOGETHER. THIS CAUSED THE BRAKES TO BE APPLIED FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THERE WAS NO WARNING ,AND IT HAPPENED TO DIFFERENT WHEELS AT DIFFERENT TIMES. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND THEY MADE AN ADJUSTMENT TO THE SYSTEM, BUT THIS DID NOT REPAIR THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE IS BEING TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TOMORROW. *AK

ABS AND PARKING BRAKE LIGHT ON INSTRUMENT PANEL COME ON SPORADICALLY HAD A FORD SHOP DIAGNOSE IT AS A BAD ABS MODULE. HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED BECAUSE OF THE UNAVAILABILITY OF THE PART. THIS PART MONITORS THE PRESSURE TO EACH BRAKE UNIT TO PREVENT THE VEHICLE FROM SLIDING IN AN EMERGENCY. LUCKILY THERE HAVE BEEN NO ACCIDENTS, INJURIES, OR DEATH AT THIS TIME. *JB

OUR 2003 FORD WINDSTAR BEGAN EXPERIENCING INTERMITTENT ELECTRICAL FAILURES. ON MAY 27, AFTER DRIVING NORMALLY, WE STOPPED FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES. THEN THE VAN STALLED SEVERAL TIMES ON A SHORT TRIP. AFTER ANOTHER 10 MINUTE STOP, IT OPERATED NORMALLY AGAIN. SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE NEXT WEEK, ALTHOUGH THE CAR DID NOT STALL, THE POWER TO THE STEERING AND BRAKES WENT OUT. WE HAD AN APPOINTMENT WITH OUR LOCAL FORD DEALER TO SERVICE THE VAN ON JUNE 7. HOWEVER, ON JUNE 6 THE POWER SYSTEMS FAILED, CAUSING THE CAR TO CRASH INTO A ROAD SIDE MAILBOX. NO PERSONAL INJURIES OCCURED. NOTHING WAS DONE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. AT OUR EXPENSE, FORD WOULD HAVE HAD SOMEONE LOOK AT THE VEHICLE TO SEE IF THEY COULD DETERMINE THE EXACT CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT. WE CHOOSE TO DEAL WITH OUR INSURANCE COMPANY INSTEAD. THE CAR WAS TOTALED AND REPOSSESSED BY STATE FARM INSURANCE.

THERE IS A NOISE IN THE REAR BREAK DRUMS CAUSED BY MOISTURE. *MR THERE WAS A NOISE IN THE REAR BRAKE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO MOISTURE AND NOT TO WORRY. THE TRANSMISSION WAS PROBLEMATIC, AND THE REAR BRAKES HAD STARTED TO NOT STOP PROPERLY. THE REAR BRAKES WERE READJUSTED, AND A NEW TRANSMISSION WAS ADDED.
