The contact owns a 2015 GMC Canyon. The contact stated that while driving on several occasions at various speeds, he observed a burning odor in the cabin of the vehicle, and the steering wheel became stiff, requiring significant effort to steer the vehicle. The vehicle was steered to the side of the road and restarted on several occasions. However, over time, the failure reoccurred more frequently. The contact stated that after the failure had occurred, the messages "Service Power Steering” and “Stabili-trak" were displayed. The contact was almost involved in two crashes due to the failure. The contact then received notice of an unknown recall, and the vehicle was taken to a dealer, where the dealer acknowledged the recall repair. The vehicle was diagnosed, and it was determined that the cover to a power sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred two months later. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000.

GMC CANYON LOOSES STEERING ASSIST WHILE DRIVING AND THE WHEEL HAS TO BE TURNED BY APPLYING A LOT OF FORCE. HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING A BUSY ROAD IN JULY 10 2025. MYSELF, SISTER AND NIECE ALMOST GOT KILLED TRYING TO GET THE VEHICLE FROM THE HOV LANE TO THE SHOULDER. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN REPRODUCED AT THE DEALERSHIP GMC YOUNG IN LAYTON UTAH AND PRICE TO FIX IS $3,500 US DOLLARS THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED BY THE MANUFACTURER, INSURANCE OR POLICE. MESSAGE SERVICE INTELLITRACK DRIVE WITH CARE CAME UP AND WHEEL LOCKED UP. THERE WERE NO MESSAGES BEFORE THE PROBLEM APPEARED.

Around ~2017, power steering failed while driving and a safety recall was performed on the torque sensor cover. Later, the whole rack and pinion module was replaced. In ~2025, power steering failed again, and again the whole rack and pinion is getting replaced. Both times the failure occurred on a windy mountain road and was nearly catastrophic.

The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed that there was no recall coverage for the failure, and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The first occurrence (post recall 21V213000 completion 8/24/2021), was Sunday 9/21/2025 . I was just accelerating after a stop sign turning left and I lost power steering and stabilitrak. Yes it is available for inspection if requested. I was at risk of being in an accident. No it has not been confirmed by a dealer or independent service. No it has not been inspected by manufacturer, police, insurance reps or others. No there were no warning lights, messages or other symptoms prior to the failure. They first appeared as the failure was occurring. The second occurrence occurred on Sunday 10/5/2025. I was on a straight away part of the road when the power steering, stabilitrak failure occurred again just before I was slowing down to turn right into a parking lot. Yes it is available for inspection if requested. I was at risk of being in an accident. No it has not been confirmed by a dealer or independent service. No it has not been inspected by manufacturer, police, insurance reps or others. No there were no warning lights, messages or other symptoms prior to the failure. They first appeared as the failure was occurring.

Almost daily now I'm getting a service power steering message and the power steering goes out. This is very dangerous! Something needs to be done!

The contact's grandmother owned a 2015 GMC Canyon. The contact stated that her grandfather was driving approximately 60 MPH on the freeway while her grandmother was occupying the front passenger's side seat. The contact stated that while the driver was attempting to switch to the right lane, the steering wheel locked up and the vehicle shut off unexpectedly. The driver was unable to pull to the side of the road and turned on the hazard lights. The contact stated that another van driving 80 MPH crashed into the vehicle, and the van caught on fire; however, the vehicle of the contact's grandparents did not catch on fire. The vehicle was then rear-ended by three other vehicles, causing the bed of the vehicle to be smooshed into the cab, and the driver's side of the vehicle was smooshed into the center divider wall. The center divider wall might have been damaged. The driver sustained whiplash and was thrown across his wife's lap. The emergency services assisted the driver out of the vehicle and put the driver on a stretcher. The contact's grandmother was assisted out of the vehicle. The contact stated that only the driver's side and passenger's side curtain air bags deployed. The driver was transported to the hospital by emergency services. The contact stated that the driver sustained a crushed spine and severed lower nerves, causing the lower body paralysis. Additionally, the driver sustained broken ribs, 15-20 staples across his head, ruptured lungs, which caused a loss of 7 pints of blood. The driver received a transfusion of 5 pints of blood. The driver's wife sustained a bruised right cheekbone, soreness on the face, the hand, the thumb, and the body. Both passengers were currently receiving medical assistance. It was unknown whether the other drivers sustained injuries. A police report was filed, and the police confirmed that four vehicles had crashed into the vehicle. my electric power steering has failed more then twice on me, steering wheel pushed back against my efforts to steer. I don't feel safe and I have noticed this has happened to other owners of the 2015 GMC Canyon. I can't afford to repair something that should be a re-call.

Power Steering fails intermittently. Shows stibilitrack warning. Can sometimes be immediately fixed by turning the vehicle off/on. Sometimes it takes a while. I've had the steering fail in the middle of a turn causing an extreme amount of additional force. Problem is intermittent, and is covered under other recalls for the same model year.

Stabiltrak system stops working randomly all the time. It is seemingly random. It can do it as soon as I crank the truck, but more commonly it happens when I am driving. The ABS also will cause the truck to pull harder in one direction either left or right randomly. I have to put pressure on the steering will in the opposite direction to keep the vehicle in the middle of the lane. Stabiltrak sensor 1st went off around October 2023. It typically doesn't come back on immediately if I power cycle the truck. No accident to report yet but when the power steering does no work while I'm driving, it is extremely hard to turn.

The contact stated that the traction control and another unknown warning light was illuminated during each failure. Additionally, the contact stated that on one occasion while his wife was driving approximately 50-55 MPH, the vehicle lost power steering assist functionality, the steering wheel became stiff, and the vehicle ran off the road into a ditch. The vehicle was undamaged and operable but needed to be pulled out of the ditch by the tow truck. The contact stated that the traction control and an unknown warning light was illuminated during the failure. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. I bought this truck new in March 2015 there was a recall for the steering shortly after which I had done, everything was ok for three years. Then I had power steering failure. After shutting off and everything is normal, until it happens again. It is now 10 years old and it has hapened 7 times in 10 years. there is no pattern to the occurrences.

While driving the vehicle, or sometimes upon starting the vehicle, the Power Steering Assist will intermittently malfunction and I will have no power steering. When this happens while I am driving it puts me and others at risk because I have reduced my ability to steer. I have not had this diagnosed by the dealer, but I will soon. I have not had the component inspected by anyone at this time. When this occurs both the Power Steering Assist and Traction Control warning lights com on. I found a recall for this exact problem on the year and model of this truck. (Recall # N202325410) I called both my local dealer and GM Assistance and was told that my vehicle was not part of the recall. I am having the same problem that the safety recall is for and somehow my vehicle is not covered. This issue happens nearly every time I drive the vehicle.

Nov 14 2024 my truck steering locked up and lost lighting/ front lights including interior and crash into another vehicle head on going 65 mph. Also no airbag deployed. I hit my chest hard. Need help. Water damaged now after I crashed and now won’t start. Smoke wire smells so disconnected battery. I feel unsafe taking this vehicle in repair without any recalls. This happen all at one time, still paying the loan on the vehicle. Paid almost 29,000. Been in no fault account. Help. Need help reporting issues to insurance to fix the crashed truck or total loss this model. Was scary

After speaking with a GMC representative, they confirmed there isn’t any issues with the steering wheel sensor. Yet, I’m having trouble steering while driving. The code C0545 was mentioned as the source. No accidents have occurred but has come close. The police, insurance have been involved.

While driving, the power steering stops working. I was traveling at approx 55 mph with my daughter in the car and the power steering quit. Alert lights came on the dash. I managed to slow down and turn off the highway. I turned the truck off and when I turned it back on it was fine. Drove for another 10 minutes to get home and it went out again at a stop light. I found a place to pull over and turned it off and back on and it stopped doing it again. There is a recall for this issue on this vehicle but evidently mine was not on the recall or was fixed prior to me owning it. I have not checked with the dealership, but I’m assuming it will be a large bill to get it taken care of. Hopefully it does not go out at a bad time.

The contact stated that the squealing sound was heard while making a turn. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic. The contact stated that three weeks prior to the failure the vehicle was serviced at the dealer under an unknown power steering recall. In addition, the contact stated that several days following the recall repair, the squealing sound started. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed and was not repaired. The power steering will intermittently fail at random times. I can feel the change in the steering wheel, followed immediately by the warning message on the screen above the wheel reading "Stabilitrak Failure" and 4 loud chimes from the speakers. This first happened in June of 2022. When I turned the truck off and on again, the same warning appeared on the screen but power steering was restored. This didn't happen again until earlier this year (Feb 2024). This issue happened a few times at low speed, during which it was extremely difficult to steer. I narrowly avoided an accident both times due to quick breaking. I learned about recall bulletin 15595A which describes this issue for my make, model and year. I contacted GE about this issue but they pushed back continuously referencing the fact that my VIN was not part of the recall. They eventually agreed to inspect my truck to determine if my issue is the same as the recall, but only if I paid $250 for a diagnostic. I went to the dealership today and the manager told me everything would be out of pocket, including any repairs. He was not willing to note my case # 9-12939029688 and explicitly stated "this won't be covered no matter what". I left without performing the diagnostic so as not to waste time and money, as it was clear GM had not been communicating with the dealer as they promised during our phone calls. Currently my power steering fails almost every time I drive, typically within 20 minutes of starting up.

I experienced the loss of power steering while driving. It was almost impossible to steer the vehicle while driving. I went on line and noticed a recall for my exact vehicle of the exact problem. The recall bulletin 15595A, was dated February 2016 and explained that the steering gear torque sensor cover assembly was to be replaced. However, apparently my VIN number was not listed. I went to the dealer and it was diagnosed with Code C0545(power steering problem). The dealer recommended the same repairs as the recall notice. The dealer showed no interest in contacting GM to see if this can be fixed by this recall. They claimed because of the year and mileage that they would not move forward with this. I contacted GM myself and explained the situation. I was told that GM would not cost assist with this problem. I find it odd that GM recognized this issue as a real safety hazard on the same make, year and model of my vehicle and refuses to assist in the repairs. The mileage and year has nothing to do with this problem. The problem was and is an existing problem with this particular vehicle. This issue is a sporadic issue and and started approximately [XXX] and continues. I feel this problem is an existing problem with all of these year, makes and models whether the VIN number was listed or not!! It's an accident waiting to happen!! MY 2015 CANYON POWER STEERING GOES OUT. THERE HAVE BEEN 2 RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE, 21V213000 AND 16V054000. MY VEHICLE WAS NOT RECALLED, BUT IS HAVING THE EXACT PROBLEM THAT IS ON THE RECALL. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAY THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE AND THERE IS NO RECALL ON MY VEHICLE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION AND IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO? CAN YOU ADD MY VEHICLE TO THE RECALL? IT IS GETTING WORSE.

I was driving my truck when, LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST AND MY DASHBOARD DISPLAYED WARNINGS. I was able to slow and pull off to the side and stop safely. I turned the car off and back on it cleared for a short time within that week it happened 3 other times. Years 2014-2015 have had several recalls for the steering. My truck was not on the recall but having the same issues.

UNKNOWN: Power Steering fail while driving. Making it a serious safety and dangerous hazard. Making steering almost impossible to turn the wheel and I have to pull off to the side of the road, park, turn the engine off, wait a few minutes and turn the key (engine) back on. Most times it will reset and I have power again and sometimes it doesn’t. This has happened many times and I have called GMC to see if there’s a recall but they said none. I have taken it to my local mechanic and he stated that it can be an electrical related issue and told me to take it to GMC dealer repair shop in the area.

on 5/24/2023 as I was driving the wheel became stiff, I was unable to continue driving. I had to shut down in the middle of the road. I turned the vehicle off and restarted it. This fixed the issue. on 5/25/2023 as I was driving the exact same situation occured. I have not driven the vehicle since parking it at a relatives driveway . The warning light to service power steering came on both times.

My wife drives this vehicle. Ever since the 2021 recall "fix", we've been having intermittent issues with two errors; service stabilitrak light and loss of power steering in the truck. This poses major safety issues as my wife is not strong enough to drive without power steering. Once the vehicle is turned off, it resets and the other goes away, but comes back randomly while driving. Latest incident listed below. We've had it looked at multiple times just to have an inability to reproduce the issue at the dealership or shop, except for this most recent time. They said the fix that was done for the safety recall in 2021 didn't actually fix the issue, which was the steering rack needing replaced at $1600. It's unbelievable to think the GM will not actually fix a known safety issue across many Colorados and Canyons (quick Internet search will prove the vastness of the issue). As you can see from the uploaded recall letter, this is the exact issue that still has not been addressed with a fix. Whatever they did before did not fix it at all.

While driving my 2015 GMC Canyon my power steering service light goes on and I have no power steering making difficult and dangerous to control my vehicle. Also, at the same a service stabilitrak light goes on. I'm aware of a recall for this problem as been issued for 2015 GMC trucks but so reason my truck is not included in this recall even though I am experiencing the same problems for which the recall was issued. I have taken my vehicle to a GMC service center and am satisfied with their findings. I feel this is a dangerous situation as my steering goes out without warning which could lead to a crash. I think my vehicle should be included in this recall and repaired with no cost to myself.

My 2015 GMC Canyon over the last 5 months has lost complete power steering control randomly while I am driving. Stability tracker warning light does come on. This proves to be so incredibly unsafe. I contacted Ron Norris GMC in Titusville, Florida and they said my Vin # does not allow for the 2021 recall however, the recall describes exactly what is happening to our vehicle! I was told I would have to pay $170.00 for them to look at it and that it would take 4 days or so. My Vin# needs to be added to the recall list as I fear the possibility of an accident may occur. This puts other vehicles on the road as well as our safety at risk. Dealer refuses to consider the fix without payment.

Power steering failure while driving. I was told by NHTSA advisors that the recall had been repaired in 2017, but is still exhibiting recall symptoms. After turning vehicle off and restarting, it would drive fine for a couple minutes then start again with the power steering loss. Manufacturer states that the recall is repaired and I am responsible for additional repairs. My safety and others is at risk due to their negligence.

As I was driving down the interstate, I lost power steering once again. This is the 3rd time it has happened. It says there is no recall for my vehicle, and the dealerships keep saying that since it's not listed on the recall by the VIN, I would be responsible for the repairs. At a speed of around 35 mph the power steering assist went out and it was very difficult to steer the truck. The service power steering sign appeared with the traction control light on. I drove slow to a house 2 miles away and steering was difficult all the way. I shut the truck off and checked for a broken belt or hose leak and both were OK . Started truck back up and all was normal. I saw a recall for similar problem for other 2015 GMC Caynons but not mine. It would have been very difficult to steer away from a dangerous situation if I had needed to.

While driving, a warning message appears in my dash and then the power steering immediately becomes inoperable. The traction control warning also appears in the instrument panel. Found that turning it off and on on would reset it but it’s now a constant warning message. I took the truck to a local dealership with no resolve. They claim there is a recall on the year/make/model for my vehicle but that my trucks VIN “doesn’t qualify “. (Recall N202325410). I don’t understand why I am excluded from a safety recall. The dealership did a diagnostic test and a test drive but at the time the PS was working properly so they dismissed me. Fast forward a few more days and the PS goes again, this time I take it straight back to the dealership, issue active. Again, they scan the truck and proceed to tell me they can’t help me. No explanation about codes they were getting, no offers to assist in any way. I then went home and haven’t driven my truck since, disgusted knowing I had to drive home SUPER careful so not to have any accidents. I use my truck to haul my camper. First it’s pretty alarming while driving down the interstate at 70mph and you lose steering. Second, I’m missing some of the best fall camping opportunities due to a non working truck that should be fixed per a manufacture recall. I’m just looking for an explanation and some help.

Power steering assist failed several times over a course of a week, both city and highway speeds. Took vehicle to dealer and was told there's no recall associated with my vehicle's VIN, wants to schedule a diagnostic inspection for $170, and see if tte technician can find any issues with tge electrical power steering assist. I found a recall on this very issue, but according to the GM dealer service department it doesn't apply to my VIN. I believe my VIN is affected by this recall.

Without any warning, loss of power steering and the stabilitrak light comes on. This happens going 5 mph in a parking lot or 65 mph on the freeway. Causing loss of power steering making it hard to control the truck. I see there has been recalls on the power steering issues but my truck falls just outside the window. I feel that this recall should be for all trucks that have the issue, major safety issue when traveling with kids in the truck.

There are times while I am driving that I will get a message pop up on the screen that say “ service steering system soon, drive with care” then the vehicle becomes incredibly hard to turn. Usually I can ease my self to the side of the road and shut down the truck and turn it back on and then everything is reset until it comes on again. I dont see any kind of correlation as to what causes it to do this, not the weather, conditions, speed, temperature, or altitude. The last time I was on the highway going 70 mph and the road separated directions and the message popped up and I had no steering assist and almost hit the guard rail trying to make the turn. I understand that their was a recall on this and mine had the service performed but now it is actually doing it. There needs to be a permanent fix to this because the the cost of the rack and pinion is almost $1, 000.00 dollar and from what I can find at the dealer and shopping online no one has them and they require the dealers programmer just to set the new one. This should not be something that you have to go to the dealer to fix for instances like this.

Power steering failure at both low speed and highway speed. This week it failed 4 times making unexpected move ability dangerous. Display chimed then displayed power steering failure, followed by stability and traction control displaying. Then stating service ASAP. 1st time it failed at 35 MPH on a straight street. Then within 10 minutes it failed on a left hand turn. The third time was the next day at highway speed of 65 MPH. The 4th time was today at 45 MPH. I researched this failure and it appears theirs a recall by GM that began in 2021.

2015 GMC Canyon steering assist has quit working while driving on multiple occasions. Received Safety Recall to repair affected steering component short. Took GMC Canyon to Parks GMC, 2640 Laurens Rd. 29607 for repair. Service department called and said they updated program in control module to keep the power assist from reengaging if the short occurs while driving and truck is ready. What?? I need to steering fixed!! When the steering goes out it has happened unexpectedly and the truck is almost uncontrollable on multiple occasions. The recall says you will replace the steering gear torque sensor cover and the service will be performed for you at no charge. The service guy regrouped and called me back and said that they would make the safety recall repair for $475.00. What?? There is no fine print anywhere where on the recall letter where it states there is a $475.00 surcharge in order to proceed. The letter clearly states "This service will be performed for you at no charge. It says it twice in the letter. So i hang up with this scammer and call the GMC Customer Assistance Center at 1 800 862 4389. I get representative Relica Porter and explain my problem getting the GMC dealership to make the repair at NO CHARGE! 24 hours later I finally get back with Relica. She claims she has made multiple attempts to contact Parks GMC in Greenville, SC. Parks GMC will not accept her call nor call her back as she has requested. I refused to pay the $475.00 surcharge when the recall states "NO CHARGE". I sent my wife and son the pickup the vehicle. My wife requested a letter stating they WILL NOT COMPLETE THE SAFETY RECALL REPAIR unless paid the additional $475.00 extortion payment. This way if the vehicle is involved in an accident due to the power steering failure we can sue them. They refused to provide the refusal of service letter for the safety recall. They said NO! Now I am in possession of a dangerous operating vehicle. Which is why I am writing you with this complaint.

the system failure is the power steering control module rack and components The safety risk is loss of power steering assist, no traction control, StabiliTrak message on dash, abs and traction control lights is on, don't feel safe to drive. The problem is confirmed by a dealer. The component has not been inspected. Yes, there are warning messages on the dash, and they appear in February 2022. A loss or reduction in power steering assist may increase the risk of a crash. In my opinion, this issue has to be solved and fixed by the dealer at no cost to the customer.

While driving the vehicle, the power steering suddenly went out. My teenage son was driving and luckily he's had training on this in Driver's Ed or it could have caused a major accident. It has since happened to me while on the freeway and while going up our driveway. I took it into the dealership where I purchased it and they could find nothing wrong, but clearly something is wrong with the wire harness or power steering. I suspect the parts used were part of an earlier recall on GMC Canyon's as the recall ended with vehicles only a month older than mine.

The vehicle's power steering assist failed, so while driving down the highway the warning msg came on with the msg : service power steering drive with care and then it switches to service stabili trak. The vehicle becomes very hard to steer, and it happens often. It started happening around 80000 miles. We might drive it for a couple of days and it doesnt happen at all, then out of no where it will happen multiple times in the same day. It has been checked out by a dealership in Broken Arrow OK, there is no error codes that show up when a diagnostics test was ran. I have notified GM customer service but they basically said they couldn't help me if it didn't show a code.

I WAS DRIVING THE CAR IN THE GIANT EAGLE PARKING LOT AND THE POWER ASSIST FOR THE STEERING STOPPED WORKING. A NOTICE CAME ON THE DASHBOARD SCREEN INDICATING THE SAME AND STATED THAT THIS MALFUNCTION COULD CAUSE A CRASH. I STOPPED THE CAR, TURNED THE ENGINE OFF, AND RESTARTED THE CAR. THE NOTICE ON THE DASHBOARD WENT AWAY AND THE STEERING POWER ASSIST FUNCTIONED NORMALLY. I DROVE THE CAR FOR A WEEK WITHOUT RECURRENCE. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT AT THE GMC DEALERSHIP AND AFTER LOOKING AT THE VEHICLE THEY CONCLUDED THAT THEY COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM SINCE THE STEERING WAS OPERATING PROPERLY. I HAD INDICATED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL NOTICE NHSTA REFERENCE #S 15595 AND 16V054000 COVERING A POTENTIAL STEERING ASSIST FAILURE BUT WAS TOLD THAT THESE RECALL NOTICES DID NOT APPLY TO MY VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO ME WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO BRING THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE THE NEXT TIME IT HAPPENS.

A FAILED STEERING ASSEMBLY." AFTER RESEARCHING AND FINDING THAT THIS IS A KNOWN AND COMMON ISSUE WITH THE 2015 CANYON AND COLORADO, I WAS TOLD MY VEHICLE IS NOT PART OF A STEERING RECALL AND THAT IT WILL BE $2,300 TO FIX IT. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 33,000 MILES ON IT AND IS WELL KEPT. TO ME, THIS IS A MANUFACTURER QUALITY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED AS A GM SAFETY FAILURE AND RECALL. GMS FAILURE TO EXPAND THE RECALL AROUND THE STEERING ISSUES IN THESE VEHICLES IS GOING TO RESULT IN A MAJOR TRAGEDY. FORTUNATELY, THE STRETCH OF HIGHWAY WAS A STRAIGHT DRIVE, NO TURNS, AT THE TIME THIS HAPPENED. AFTER TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE AND THEN RESTARTING, THE POWER STEERING RETURNED TO NORMAL OPERATION AND WOULD WORK FOR SOME PERIOD OF TIME, BUT WOULD THEN WOULD STOP WORKING WITHOUT ANY NOTICE. THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN THE LAST 75 MILES THAT I HAVE DRIVEN. THE TRUCK HAS ONLY BEEN DRIVEN A TOTAL OF 54,000 MILES. GIVEN THAT THIS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES, I HAVE STOPPED DRIVING THE VEHICLE. IT IS NOW WITH A GMC DEALER WAITING TO BE REPAIRED. THE SYMPTOMS OF MY PROBLEM SEEM TO BE VERY SIMILAR TO THE ODI INVESTIGATION RQ 19-001 WHEN I SEARCHED FOR GMC CANYON POWER STEERING ISSUES.

MY POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING WHILE DRIVING AROUND A CURVE AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND STOP BY APPLYING SIGNIFICANT PHYSICAL FORCE TO THE STEERING WHEEL. THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DISPLAYED TWO WARNINGS. THE FIRST INDICATED THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM REQUIRED SERVICE AND THE SECOND INDICATED THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM REQUIRED SERVICE. I THEN TURNED THE IGNITION OFF AND THEN RESTARTED THE VEHICLE. THE POWER STEERING AND TRACTION CONTROL WARNINGS WERE NO LONGER PRESENT AND THE POWER STEERING WAS AGAIN FUNCTIONAL. I THEN CONTACTED THE DEALER AND ARRANGED FOR THEM TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEMS THE FOLLOWING MORNING. THEIR SERVICE RECORD INDICATED A CODE C0545 (STEERING TORQUE SENSOR CORRUPT) HAD BEEN LOGGED. THEY CLEARED THE ERROR CODE AND INDICATED THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING ELSE WRONG. THE SERVICE RECORD ALSO STATED THAT "IF THE ISSUE REOCCURS, ADVISED ON STEERING GEAR $1800.00". I PICKED UP THE VEHICLE THAT AFTERNOON AND ONCE AGAIN EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH WHILE ON THE WAY HOME. AS BEFORE, I PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE OF ROAD, TURNED OFF THE IGNITION, RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND DROVE THE REST OF THE WAY HOME WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.

IN EVERY CASE, WARNINGS LIGHTS HAVE DISPLAYED IMMEDIATELY BEFORE THE LOSS OF CONTROL. THESE LIGHTS HAVE ALSO 'TURNED-OFF' OR RESET WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED. I HAVE REPEATEDLY BROUGHT MY TRUCK INTO AUTHORIZED GMC SERVICE APPOINTMENTS SOON AFTER THE WARNING LIGHTS AND PERFORMANCE FAILURES, OR IN ONE INSTANCE AS THE WARNING LIGHT WAS ACTIVELY ILLUMINATED. EACH TIME, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WAS NOT ABLE TO RECREATE THE ISSUE OR PULL ANY RELEVANT SERVICE CODES RELATED TO THE PROBLEM. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I DO NOT BELIEVE THE ROOT CAUSE ISSUE HAS BEEN ADJUDICATED AND I THINK THIS REPRESENTS A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER TO DRIVERS OF THE 2015 GMC CANYON SUCH AS MYSELF. WHILE MY TRUCK WAS NOT PART OF THE PAST RECALL, THIS SEEMS STRONGLY RELATED TO THE PRIOR STEERING GEAR CONNECTOR RECALL.

THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE 2016 RECALL FOR A SIMILAR SOUNDING ISSUE.

CALLED DEALER AND GMC CUSTOMER SERVICE TO BE TOLD BY BOTH THAT MY VIN IS NOT COVERED. DESPITE EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS GMC WAS NOT WILLING TO DIAGNOSE WITHOUT CHARGE SINCE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. GMC REFUSES TO CONFIRM IF MY VIN MAY HAVE BEEN MISSED WHEN RECALL ISSUED WITHOUT CHARGING. THEREFORE LEAVING ME THE OPTION TO 1. PAY FEES AND OVER PRICED DEALER SERVICE CHARGES TO DIAGNOSE AND ADDRESS THE SAME PROBLEM THAT AFFECTED OTHER 2015 GMC CANYONS OR 2. RISK THE SAME ISSUE WHILE DRIVING CROSS-STATE WITHIN A WEEK DUE TO WORK REQUIREMENTS AND LACK OF AVAILABILITY OF A 'COMPANY CAR.'

THEY SAID MY VEHICLE WAS NOT LISTED ON THE RECALL AND THAT IT WAS MANUFACTURED A COUPLE MONTHS BEFORE THE RECALL DATES. IT IS OBVIOUSLY THE SAME ISSUE SO I CALLED GM AND THEY JUST WERE TALKING IN CIRCLES. I CANNOT AFFORD A $2000 REPAIR. I COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS A MONTH AGO WHEN I TOOK THE TRUCK TO GERRY LANE GMC. I WAS TOLD IT WAS A BAD BATTERY. SO I PURCHASED A BATTERY FROM THE DEALERSHIP. NOT EVEN A WEEK LATER THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED. HOWEVER, WHEN I CUT THE IGNITION OFF AND CRANK BACK UP IT RESETS. THE SERVICE ADVISOR STATED TO BRING IT BACK IN IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. THIS TIME (ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER) WHILE I LOST POWER I WAS ABLE TO VIDEO SO I CAN SHOW THIS ADVISOR WHAT KEEPS HAPPENING. THIS TIME IT TOOK ME AT LEAST 4 TIMES CRANKING UP AND THEN SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE TO GET IT TO RESET SO I COULD GET BACK HOME AND SWITCH CARS. I WAS TOO AFRAID TO CONTINUE DRIVING GOING OVER THE NEXT BRIDGE THAT'S 20 PLUS MILES WITHOUT AN EXIT AND LOSE POWER STEERING AGAIN. I'VE HAD TO RENT CARS FOR THIS REPETITIVE OCCURRENCE WITH THIS TRUCK THAT SEEMS TO NOT BE ABLE TO BE REPAIRED. OR EITHER THEY KNOW WHAT'S WRONG BUT WAITING FOR IT TO BE OUT OF WARRANTY FOR ME TO TAKE ON THE COST OF REPAIRING IT. BUT THIS IS NOT SAFE TO KEEP LOOSING POWER STEERING AND I'M DRIVING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 50 TO 70 MPH. I ALSO EXPLAINED THAT WHEN I PARK I CAN'T TURN THE KEY TO TAKE OUT OF THE IGNITION. GMC CLAIMS THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT ONE OF THE EFFECTED VEHICLE. WELL II OBVIOUSLY IS AND GMC IS TRYING TO MINIMIZE THE TOTAL NUMBER OF RECALLS. THE DEALER WANTS A HUGE AMOUNT OF MONEY TO TROUBLESHOOT AND POSSIBLY REPAIR ISSUE, BUT THEY ALSO CLAIM NO RECALL SO NO HELP FROM GMC. THE HAPPENS AT BOTH FREEWAY SPEED AND CRAWLING IN TRAFFIC. STEERING WHEELS JERKS THEN ALARMS GO OFF. MY WIFE WILL NO LONGER DRIVE THIS VEHICLE AS SHE CANNOT TURN THE WHEEL WHEN THIS HAPPENS AND SHE ALMOST CRASHED. THIS SAFETY ISSUE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ASAP BEFORE SOMEONE IS INJURED OR KILLED BECAUSE OF A KNOWN ISSUE THE GMC WILL NOT OWN. I HAD BROUGHT MY CANYON IN TO GET THE STEERING RACK REPLACED BECAUSE OF THE POWER STEERING ISSUE AND THE RECALL. I ENDED UP HAVING TO DRIVE MY TRUCK TO THE DEALER WITHOUT POWER STEERING WHEN I GOT IT FIXED. NOW THAT THE STEERING RACK HAS BEEN REPLACED THERE'S SLACK IN MY STEERING WHEEL WHILE I'M DRIVING. THE DEALER NOW SAYS THAT I NEED TO CHANGE MY STEERING COLUMN BECAUSE THERE'S SLACK IN THE JOINTS IN THE STEERING COLUMN THAT IS CAUSING THE PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THERE WAS NO PLAY IN THE STEERING PRIOR TO THIS NO POWER STEERING EVENT AND IT CERTAINLY SEEMS THAT DRIVING THE TRUCK WITHOUT POWER STEERING CAUSED THIS ISSUE WITH THE JOINTS IN THE STEERING COLUMN THAT NOW THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME $800 TO FIX. THIS REPAIR SHOULD BE COVERED SINCE IT'S PRETTY APPARENT THAT THE RECALL ISSUE, DRIVING WITHOUT POWER STEERING, CAUSED THIS ISSUE AS WELL.

ON SEPARATE OCCASIONS WHILE VEHICLE WAS IN ON POSITION (IN DRIVE, IN MOTION, AND/OR IN PARK), ALERTS CAME ON DASHBOARD ALERTING TO 2 SERVICE ISSUES. 1. SERVICE STABILITRAK AND 2. SERVICE POWER STEERING. AT THAT TIME POWER STEERING IN THE VEHICLE WAS LOST. VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN INTO SAFE AREA, TURNED OFF, AND THEN TURNED BACK ON. UPON RESTART, VEHICLE DASH ALERTS AND POWER STEERING ISSUE WERE NO LONGER APPARENT.

I DROVE THE PICKUP TO WORK. AFTER BEING PARKED A COUPLE OF HOURS I STARTED IT TO RETURN HOME. UPON STARTING, A WARNING ABOUT THE NEED TO SERVICE THE POWER STEERING ILLUMINATED ON THE DASH DISPLAY. STEERING WAS EXTREMELY HEAVY AND DIFFICULT. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A DEALERSHIP. AT THE DEALERSHIP, THE MECHANIC FOUND THAT THE STEERING BOX WOULD NEED REPLACEMENT. THE TRUCK HAS 8100 TOTAL MILES.THAT FIGURE IS NOT A MISPRINT, IT HAS LESS THAN 10,000 MILES. HAD THIS OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING, THE RESULT COULD HAVE BEEN DEADLY. APPARENTLY, THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE 2015 CANYON AND HAS HAD CERTAIN VEHICLES RECALLED, DEPENDENT ON BUILD DATE. A BRIEF INTERNET SEARCH PRODUCED APPROXIMATELY 30 OTHER CANYONS WITH THIS SAME ISSUE. THE DEALERSHIP IS ATTEMPTING TO CONVINCE THE REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE FROM GMC TO COVER THE REPAIR. THE TRUCK WAS ONE MONTH OUT OF WARRANTY.

TRUCK BEGAN LOSING STEERING CONTROL A MONTH AGO, THEN BECAME MORE FREQUENT THE LAST 2 WEEKS. DEALER REPLACE ENTIRE RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY BECAUSE ELECTRIC STEERING HARNESS AND MODULES WERE FRIED. THIS WAS DUE TO LITTLE OR NO DI-ELETRIC GREASE IN THE CONNECTOR PLUGS, WHICH ALSO, ARE NOT WEATHERPROOFED FROM THE ELEMENTS. $2000 OUT OF MY POCKET TO FIX BECAUSE RECALL ONLY COVERS EARLIER MODELS. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. 3 TIMES THE STEERING GAVE OUT WHILE DRIVING AND IS VERY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL EVEN IF YOU CATCH IT IN TIME. THESE VEHICLES ARE DANGEROUS TO EVERYONE. I WANTED TO FIX IT BEFORE I GET RID OF IT SO SOMEONE ELSE WOULD NOT BE STUCK WITH THIS PROBLEM. TRUCK HAS 50,000 MILES ON IT. BAD DESIGN ON THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING, CONNECTORS ARE IN THE ELEMENTS AND UNPROTECTED.

NEEDED TO PARK VEHICLE AND TURN OFF AND RESTART VEHICLE TO RESTORE POWER STEERING ASSIST. OPERATOR WOULD BE PROMPTED WITH A "LOSS OF POWER STEERING, DRIVE WITH CARE" WARNING. SCANNING WITH OBDII TOOL SHOWED THE LOSS OF STEERING ASSIST WAS ALWAYS TIED TO U0420 DTC. ERRORS WERE OCCURRING IN AUGUST SO TEMPS WERE BETWEEN 70 AND 100 DEGREES F. ERROR IS BEHAVING EXACTLY LIKE A LOOSE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION, PROBABLY TO THE POWER STEERING TORQUE SENSOR. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP AND APPEARED TO BE EXHIBITING THE EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS AS NHTSA RECALL 16V054000. TRIED TO GET GM TO HONOR THIS REPAIR HOWEVER THEY CLAIMED MY VEHICLE IS NOT IN THE AFFECTED 2015 MODEL YEAR DATE RANGE. DEALER PERFORMED THE SAME REPAIR DEFINED BY THE RECALL AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY POWER STEERING LOSS FOR LAST 3 WEEKS SINCE RECEIVING VEHICLE BACK FROM DEALER. IF THE ERROR WAS NOT FIXED I WOULD HAVE EXPECTED IT TO CONTINUE HAPPENING AT THE SAME FREQUENCY AS BEFORE (2-5 TIMES PER DAY)

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V054000 (STEERING). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 56,000.

I WAS GOING TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, BUT THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE AGENT RECOMMENDED TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF AND RESTART AFTER 30 SECONDS. THIS WORKED, BUT I TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALER TO HAVE IT CHECKED. THEY FOUND NO FAULT CODES. FIVE DAYS LATER IT HAPPENED AGAIN WHILE ON THE INTERSTATE DOING 70 MPH. FORTUNATELY, I ONLY NEEDED TO MAKE THREE TURNS TO GET TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE POWER STEERING RACK ASSEMBLY AT A COST OF $1662.01. I CONTACTED GM TO ASK IF THE EXPENSE WOULD BE COVERED BY RECALL 16V054000. I WAS ASSIGNED A CASE SERIAL AND AFTER SEVERAL INQUIRIES, A SENIOR GM REPRESENTATIVE STATED IT WAS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL AND IT WAS A DIFFERENT MODULE CAUSING THE RECALL. SHE OFFERED A $100 VOUCHER FOR FUTURE VEHICLE SERVICE AND CLOSED MY CASE AS DISSATISFIED. REGARDLESS OF THE MODULE, LOSS OF STEERING IS A LIFE THREATENING HAZARD AND THE RECALL SHOULD BE EXPANDED. THE VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 81,900 AND 82,100 MILES WHEN THIS OCCURRED.

ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS I HAVE LOST ALL POWER STEERING AFTER GETTING 2 SERVICE WARNINGS. IN THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE WITH ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST STEERING, IT IS INCREASING DIFFICULT TO STEER. (WORSE THAN AN OLD TRUCK WITHOUT POWER STEERING) IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY, IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN SUDDENLY, I CAN NOT SEE HOW IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I AM GETTING 2 WARNINGS. THE FIRST IS TO "SERVICE STABILITRACK" AT THE SAME TIME, "SERVICE POWER STEERING DRIVE WITH CARE". AT THIS POINT I LOSE ALL POWER STEERING. THE ERRORS OCCUR WHEN DRIVING, AND HAVE ALWAYS HAPPENED AT HIGHWAY AND INTERSTATE SPEEDS (40+ MPH?). IN ALL INITIAL INSTANCES, THE TRUCK WAS TRAVELING ON WELL MAINTAINED ROADS, WHICH WERE STRAIGHT. I WAS NOT MAKING ANY TURNS SUCH AS A TRAFFIC SIGNAL OR INTERSECTION. ON OCCASIONS I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PULL OVER, STOP, TURN THE TRUCK OFF, RESTART AND THE ERROR CLEARS. IN THE LAST 2 DAYS I HAVE CLEARED THE ERROR, BUT IT RETURNS WITH THE SAME RESULT, NO POWER STEERING. AFTER READING SOME REVIEWS ONLINE, IT SEEMS TO BE A SOMEWHAT COMMON ISSUE, AND MOST RESULT IN A LOSS OF POWER STEERING. MY TRUCK IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER AND THE PART WAS NOT IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE (POSSIBLY SHOWING THE NUMBER OF ISSUES??) THE DEALERSHIP HAS STATED THAT IT IS THE 'STEERING GEAR', OR RACK & PINION WHICH HAS FAILED. THE VEHICLE HAS ADDITIONALLY HAD A RECALL FOR SIMILAR ISSUES, BUT THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT IT WAS FOR A 'SOFTWARE UPDATE'. THIS IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN THE FIX IN OTHER SIMILAR SITUATIONS. I SEE THIS AS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, THE MOST SERIOUS I HAVE HAD IN ANY TRUCK I HAVE OWNED. THIS IS THE REASON FOR FILING THIS REPORT.

MY 2015 GMC CANYON LOST POWER STEERING TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 50MPH ON A MOUNTAIN ROAD ON ONE OF THE FIRST RAINY DAYS OF THE SEASON. IT FELT LIKE LOSING MORE THAN JUST STEERING ASSISTANCE, AS EVEN AT THAT RATE OF SPEED THE WHEEL WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN. I WAS LUCKY TO BE ON ONE OF THE LIMITED SECTIONS OF STRAIGHT ROAD. REBOOTING THE VEHICLE RETURNED STEERING FUNCTIONALITY. DEALER FOUND CODE "C0545 - STEERING TORQUE SENSOR" AND PERFORMED SAFETY RECALL #15595 WHERE THEY REPLACED THE TORQUE SENSOR COVER. I WAS CHARGED $200 FOR THE REPAIR DESPITE THE RECALL NOTICE EXPLICITLY STATING IT SHOULD BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. I HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED LOSS OF POWER STEERING IN THE MONTH SINCE THE REPAIR. I CONTACTED THE GM REGIONAL REP, WHO STATED THAT CARS CAN HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AS A SAFETY RECALL, AND THE SAME SOLUTION AS A SAFETY RECALL, BUT NOT BE PART OF THE SAFETY RECALL. THAT WAS THE JUSTIFICATION FOR THE $200 CHARGE AND THE DENIAL OF REIMBURSEMENT. GM FURTHER STATED THAT THEY DON'T DETERMINE THE CRITERIA FOR A SAFETY RECALL, IT IS ALL UP TO THE NHTSA. IN OTHER WORDS, THEY WON'T DO THE RIGHT THING UNLESS THE GOVERNMENT FORCES THEM TO. IN MY OPINION AS AN ENGINEER, SENSOR + RAIN SOUNDS LIKE A PLAUSIBLE MATCH FOR THE SYMPTOMS AND THE PROBLEM IDENTIFIED BY THE SAFETY RECALL THAT THE DEALER PERFORMED. I QUESTION WHETHER THE RECALL IS MISSING SOME VIN NUMBERS, OR IF A VERY SIMILAR BUT INDEPENDENT PROBLEM EXISTS ON THE SAME COMPONENTS, WARRANTING A SEPARATE RECALL.

I HAVE A 2015 GMC CANYON WITH 54700 MILES ON IT. ON OCCASION, WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE BEEPS AND DISPLAYS A MESSAGE "STEERING MALFUNCTION ..." AT WHICH POINT THE STEERING ASSIST STOPS WORKING. THE VEHICLE CAN STILL BE STEERED BUT IT TAKES BOTH HANDS AND A LOT OF EFFORT TO TURN THE WHEELS, ESPECIALLY AT SLOW SPEEDS. PROBLEM APPEARS TO HAPPEN MOSTLY WHEN DRIVING ON STRAIGHT OR GENTLE CURVED ROADS. SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE AND LETTING THE SYSTEM "REST" FOR 5+ MINUTES ALLOWS THE POWER ASSIST STEER TO RESET AND START WORKING AGAIN, UNTIL THE NEXT FAILURE. RECENTLY HAD THE DEALER REINSTALL THE STEERING SOFTWARE TO SEE IF THAT HAD ANY IMPACT. WORKED GOOD FOR A FEW DAYS BUT THE ISSUE RETURNED AFTER SEVERAL DAYS.

THE POWER STEERING ASSIST HAS SHUT DOWN THREE TIMES MAKING IT VERY HARD TO STIR. THIS LAST TIME IT HAPPEN I WAS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND ALMOST WRECKED. MY WIFE IS 4'11" AND 95 POUNDS AND IS SCARED TO DRIVE THE TRUCK. I AM TOO NOW SINCE THE EVENT YESTERDAY. THE TRUCK WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR THE THIRD TIME YESTERDAY WHICH I WAS CLOSE TO WHEN IT HAPPENED YESTERDAY. I DRIVE IT WITHOUT THE POWER ASSIST TO MAKE SURE THEY UNDERSTAND HOW HARD IT IS TO DRIVE. IT WAS IN THE DEALER 3 OR 4 WEEKS AGO FOR A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. AFTER 3 TIMES I NOR MY WIFE WANT TO DRIVE THE TRUCK AGAIN. IF IT KEEPS HAPPENING WE WILL EVENTUALLY WRECK. THE TRUCK HAS ONLY APPROXIMATELY 16,000 MILES ON IT.

THE POWER STEERING ON MY 2015 GMC CANYON HAS FAILED REPEATEDLY WHILE DRIVING IN DIFFERENT ROAD CONDITIONS. IN ONE CASE, I WAS GOING STRAIGHT ON A SURFACE STREET AT LOW SPEED. HOWEVER, IN ANOTHER I WAS CORNERING THROUGH A HIGHWAY OFF-RAMP AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH. WHEN THE POWER STEERING FAILS, THERE IS A WARNING CHIME AND THE POWER STEERING AND STABILITY CONTROL WARNING LIGHTS ACTIVATE SIMULTANEOUSLY. IT BECOMES EXTREMELY CHALLENGING TO STEER, AND IN THE CASE OF CORNERING AT SPEED THE VEHICLE PULLS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF THE TURN [IE, IT PULLS TOWARDS DANGER]. PULLING OVER AND RESTARTING THE VEHICLE HAS 'SOLVED' THE PROBLEM EACH TIME, ALBEIT TEMPORARILY. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A GM DEALER TO GET FIXED, BUT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY RELATED MECHANICAL ISSUES OR GM PROVIDED SW PATCHES THAT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. SO THE GM DEALER HAD ME LEAVE WITHOUT FIXING ANY OF THE UNDERLYING CONDITIONS THAT CAUSED THE POWER STEERING FAILURE. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND APPARENTLY WIDE-SPREAD ISSUE BASED ON THE NUMBER OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS I HAVE READ.

TURNED IGNITION OFF AND WHEN I TURNED IT BACK ON PROBLEM WENT AWAY. NEXT DAY WHILE DRIVING ON A STRAIGHT ROAD SAME WARNING LIGHT INDICATION AND POWER STEERING FAILED. PUT TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL TURNED IGNITION OFF THEN BACK ON AND PROBLEM WENT AWAY. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER SEVERAL DAYS LATER FOR REPAIR. DEALER TOLD ME FOUR SOFTWARE UPDATES WERE INCORPORATED. PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN ABOUT FOUR WEEKS LATER WHILE DRIVING ON A STRAIGHT ROAD ABOUT A HALF HOUR AFTER ENCOUNTERING A MODERATE RAIN SQUALL. RETURNED VEHICLE TO DEALER THREE WEEKS AGO AND THEY STILL HAVE THE VEHICLE IN THEIR SHOP. I HAVE RECEIVED NO INFORMATION AS TO THE STATUS OF THE REPAIR EFFORT. I CONSIDER THIS PHENOMENA EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. I AM 6'3" AND WEIGH 250 POUNDS. WHEN THE POWER STEERING FAILS IT IS ALL I CAN DO TO KEEP THE VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL.

ON DATE I LISTED WHILE DRIVING A STRAIGHT RURAL ROAD (ABOUT 15 MINUTES OF DRIVING) THE "SERVICE" INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON WITH MESSAGE STATING THAT POWER STEERING WAS NOT WORKING, ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHER INDICATOR LIGHTS- TIRE PRESSURE/TRACTION CONTROL??? 3. MY CONCERN- IF YOU ARE GOING STRAIGHT CAR/TRUCK CAN BE STEERED WITH EFFORT. IT BECOMES ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME (6'0" 180 LBS) TO STEER WHEN TURNING OR MANEUVERING. I HOPE THE DANGER IS APPARENT TO YOU FROM WHAT I HAVE STATED. WHEN I GOT TO MY DESTINATION (DROVE SLOW AND VERY CONTROLLED ON RURAL ROADS, 15 MINUTES) I DID SOME ERRANDS WITH THE PLAN TO GET THE TRUCK IN FOR SERVICE. WHEN I CAME OUT TO LEAVE, STARTED TRUCK- EVERYTHING WAS BACK TO NORMAL- LIKE NOTHING EVER HAPPENED. 4. TODAY, JUNE 26, OUT DOING ERRANDS- SAME SCENARIO OCCURRED- NO WARNING EXCEPT FOR "SERVICE" INDICATOR IN MIDDLE OF MY DRIVE- NO POWER STEERING. AGAIN- VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER AND MANEUVER. EVERYTHING IS FINE, BACK TO NORMAL, WHEN I STOPPED AND RE-STARTED THE TRUCK. 5. GMC SAID THEIR POWER STEERING IS NEW ON THE THIS VEHICLE- "ELECTRONIC" NO BELT, ETC. 6. ALMOST SEEMS LIKE A COMPUTER ISSUE, LIKE A RE-BOOT ON THE SYSTEM, WHEN THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF AND THEN RE-STARTED. 7. IF THIS SITUATION WOULD OCCUR TO OTHERS- PEOPLE COULD DIE AS THE RESULT OF ACCIDENTS.
