Power steering goes out intermittently while driving, almost causing wrecks. A warning pops up that power steering needs to be serviced...but when truck is turned off and restarted the issue goes away. This is an extremely dangerous situation and seems to be affecting thousands of vehicles according to internet research. GM needs to be held accountable and recall and fix the issues immediately.

Oct 21, 2025

At random the power steering and traction control turn off making it difficult to drive.. This happens randomly and has become unable to steer. Once the vehicle is turned off for a period of time you can start it up and the steering returns. The issue was reported in the 2015 models. That recall needs to extend into the 2016 models since most of the parts were most likely manufactured tot eh same specs as the 2015. The vehicle was diagnosed by an independent repair shop. The dealership wanted $200 for just the diagnostics. Every time this happens it becomes very difficult to drive and is a safety issue. The issue first appeared 2 months ago and after the restart stopped. Then all of a sudden it seems to occur daily.

I believe the steering gear torque sensor cover assembly is causing my power steering to intermittently stop working I read the report for the 2015 model year and my truck is doing the exact same thing truck was produced in 10/15 but is not part of the recall after further searching online I’ve found other people owning the 2016 model year that has the same issue I believe the recall needs to be moved to cover the 2016 model year as well

As I was pulling away from the stop sign my power steering quit working and I was almost hit by another vehicle. The dash light flashed and said there was Drive System problems. I was able to get the truck turned back around and headed back home. I got into my garage and checked the power steering fluid and it was full. I started my truck back up and was able to drive to the dealership (Everett GMC where I purchased the truck new) The service representative said he will put it on the diagnostic machine and find out what was wrong. The next day they called me and said they found out what it was a drive gear that quit working. He said that he would get this ordered and put it in, I got a call 2 days later and said it was finished. My wife checked to see if there was a recall. There was a recall for this problem for 2015 Canyon in 2021 for the same issue. I am thinking that this issue and a very

Car repeatedly gives stabilitrack warning while driving and power steering goes out completely. It is incredibly dangerous and it appears this was a problem with the previous model year as well. This has continued to happen and looking online it looks like many owner of this year are plagued with this problem and the cost to fix is very expensive, even though it is a known recall for the previous model year.

May 18, 2025

While driving the truck's stabilitrak and power steering lights came on and I lost the use of power steering. This first happened while going 70 mph on the toll road and I almost lost control of the car it happened so suddenly. I was able to pull over and turned the truck off and back on again. The issue seemed to have resolved itself. Then a week later I was turning right into traffic and it happened again mid turn causing me to almost hit a car in the adjacent lane. It resolved itself again upon restarting the truck but has happened with each trip since. When I looked up the issue I saw that there was an issue with corrosion on the electrical part that controls these features in this particular model.

While driving, power steering system quits providing power assist. This problem is intermittent and can occur at any time without any warning and at any speed. This is a safety concern since no warning is given as to when the power steering system will fail. Have contacted local GMC dealer and was told there is a recall for the 2025 model but not the 2016. Contacted General Motors and was told the same.

The vehicle will lose power steering while driving. The lights come on for stabilitrak and traction control then it says power steering is gone. It randomly deactivates the power steering, while driving. It's extremely dangerous and have almost had accidents. They are telling me that it may not be under a recall. If gmc used the same steering box as the previous model year, the same issue is occurring. Intermittent power steering failure.

stability tracker alerts, then loss of power steering, would happen randomly, sometimes few times in a row, sometime after shutting down vehicle would reset it - other times not. safety issue when: 1) driving on freeway - made steering difficult if/when needing to make sudden turn or lane change 2) 90 degree turns would be difficult 3) sudden loss of steering ability when there is other traffic oncoming. Taken to auto shop - they ran a few checks, but the issue was sporadic, usually does not happen right away, so it was not reproducible on demand. First repair was for inspection and fluids, did not find issue with the Stability Tracker. When the problem resumed again, took the vehicle back to the shop and they researched the issue more and recommended replacing the steering column. The technician said the issue was on a Recall on previous year/model but not the 2016. The issue started about mid-2024. So far as of 3/2025 the issue has not happened since the column replacement on 2/12/2025. Warning would be the Stability Tracker

Power Steering system failure warning message followed by a Stabilitrac system failure warning which caused the drivers front side brake to apply. I could not duplicate the brake application issue with the dealer but the other failures which included loss of power steering at highway speeds and lack of stabilitrac system was repeatable. A full replacement of power steering rack was performed with a front end alignment after dealing with the problem for weeks. Was told this manufacturing failure was covered for free in models newer and older than my truck (same model) but my truck was not covered. This is unsafe and not acceptable.

I am the owner of a 2016 GMC Canyon truck, which i purchased used in approx 2020 with about 43,000 miles on it...today's date is now 1/5/25 and the truck has approx 99,0000 mile on it. Over the last 2 years the electronic stability control has failed approx 20 times. A warning light appears on the dash stating the failure of the power steering and the stabilitrac. When this happens steering the truck and be extremely difficult and I am forced to pull off the road. Usually when the truck is turned off for a short while and then turned back on the problem will fix itself, but only for a few minutes or hours and the problem reoccurs. Last week I took the truck to a GM dealer and had the steering angle sensor recalibrated..which fixed the problem for 1 month. Now it is failing again! My wife is afraid and refuses to drive the truck because if this happens again while she is driving she isn't strong enough to turn the wheel..particularly from a complete stopped position. This is a very serious and dangerous problem that GM needs to be responsible to resolve.

I bought my 2016 GMC Canyon back in 2018 with 40k miles on it. After couple of months, I noticed that when traveling at approx 70MPH front wheels are shaking violently. I did wheel alignment and other wheel check but still there. Lately, power steering stabilitrak keep showing up on my panel. Since it can’t be resetted, Im literally driving like arm wrestling in the middle of the road specially during parking. After many years of wondering of what the wheel vibration is causing, electronic Rack and Pinion issue was the result of diagnostic conducted by Schumacher Chevrolet here in West Palm Beach, FL. They quoted me 3K for the repair.

Sep 4, 2024

The contact owns a 2016 GMC Canyon. The contact stated that while his wife was driving approximately 70 MPH, the power steering suddenly failed, and the steering wheel became difficult to turn in either direction. During the failure, the message "Power Steering Failure" was displayed. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 51,867.

Additionally, the contact stated that the failure had occurred several times before. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the vehicle needed an alignment and steering rack replacement. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000.

I was driving 70 MPH on the highway when I received a warning on my dash that stated "service power steering, drive with care" and a second warning that stated "service stabilitrak". I immediately felt the steering wheel lock up and lost all power steering. My safety as well as others was put in risk as I was unable to maneuver the vehicle especially at the high rate of speed. Prior to this incident there had been no warning or other issues that could have signaled a failure. The problem was duplicated at the dealership and a code was given.

Aug 7, 2024

Electric power steering stops working and the power steering assist warning light is illuminated. Once the truck is restarted the problem goes away but will come back at some point while driving. This has happened multiple times at multiple speeds, the first time it happened I was going over 70 MPH. With no power steering it is nearly impossible to turn the steering wheel since I only have one hand available to use on the steering wheel. Had I not had a passenger with me to help turn the wheel I would have crashed. I took the truck to the dealer and they told me it was the same problem that the 2015's had had on a recall but my truck was a early 2016 so I was not part of the recall. The dealer was happy to fix it at a cost of $2916.27 My truck only has 27135 miles, but is to old for warranty coverage.

Aug 5, 2024

The contact owns a 2016 GMC Canyon. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the electronic power steering was not functioning properly, requiring increased effort to maneuver the vehicle. The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The power steering assist warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the steering gear assembly due to an electrical short. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V213000 (Steering), but neither the VIN nor the model year was included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 66,000.

Jul 13, 2024

Power steering failed twice during a turn on two separate drives, nearly causing an accident both times. A power steering warning was displayed on the dash. I was able to move the vehicle to the side of the road, and normal power steering function returned following a restart of the vehicle. It is my understanding that the 2015 model year was recalled for the same reason, and that the 2016 model year contains the exact same problematic part.

Jul 5, 2024

Truck reads power steering problem and does not allow me to turn my steering wheel.

Jul 4, 2024

I have been having the same problem many people have been having with the same vehicle type. I will be driving and this has happened 4 times now and once on the freeway! Were I am driving, and all of the sudden the power steering cuts out, and I get all the warning lights come on. I had to pull over, or find a spot to pull over and turn the vehicle off and turn back on. Now I see there was a recall for this issue on the 2015 canyons but not for the 2016, and this needs to be recalled there are going to be people dying if you do nothing, and GMC will have a class action suite and this regulatory agency shall have serious legal redress against you should you do nothing, even though you know there is a serious issue and that multiple complaints have been filed and GMC is well aware of this! I do smell legal redress coming for you and GMC...

Jun 27, 2024

Over the past 6 months, when driving, the power steering stops working and I get a dash light that comes on that talks about stabilitrac. If I shut my car off and restart, it works again, but it is random when it might occur. It's very scary, because, if I were not strong with great reaction time...I might be dead.

Jun 16, 2024

Received a stabilitrck error and lost power steering and traction control while driving. This appears to be a common and dangerous issue with this model vehicle.

May 8, 2024

Was driving home going about 45 mph and the driver information center displayed “service power steering” and service stabilitrack system. Was able to safely move over without power steering and come to a stop. Put the truck in park turned it off. Turned truck back on and everything is as working fine

May 1, 2024

While driving my 2016 GMC Canyon today May 1st, I am experiencing the following... power steering/stabilitrac control lights come on and loose power steering. sometimes it will reset after turning off the truck and restarting but this is happening more and more often which is a major safety issue when considering this occurs randomly at any given point while driving. I have experienced this issue in the past few years at all different mileages and then it doesn't happen for a long time but always ends up having the same issue. I have been doing research and found this exact same problem is why there was a recall on the 2015 GMC canyons referencing the steering torque sensor assembly and cover. I have also researched the cost to repair out of pocket and it quite expensive. This recall for the older models needs to be updated to include all 2016 models as there are many more complaints about this happening on 2016 models as well. just search google and there you go. I have already called GM and got nowhere. Extremely frustrated as this shouldn't be happening and i as the consumer should not be having to pay out of pocket for a manufacturer error they refuse acknowledge. Thank you,

Randomly lose power steering control while operating vehicle, dealer diagnosed issue as same problem part in 2015 GMC Canyon Recall

Apr 15, 2024

I have lost my power steering while driving over a dozen times in the previous month. Fortunately, it usually happens when I am not attempting to negotiate a turn. However, it did happen once when I was turning into a parking lot, but luckily it was at a low speed. I could not negotiate the turn without the power steering, so I stopped and turned the car off to reset it. I have found that if I stop, park and turn the car off, the power steering immediately resumes upon restarting the vehicle. In some cases, I have lost the power steering again within the next few minutes. Usually, the problem won't happen again for the remainder of the drive.

Apr 14, 2024

I have had this repeated issue since i purchased my 2016 GMC Canyon in 2020. The power steering goes out at different speeds with NO indication . The lights that appear on dash are power steering and stabilatrax. I have had the battery and all connectors replaced and now the rack and pinion that the sensor is in. These repairs have been very costly and this situation has been very dangerous as it happens without any warning. Just when i thought it was fixed with a new battery and cables it quit again in heavy traffic and i was almost hit by 2 vehicles. It has been in 3 different repair shops and now at a Chevrolet Dealership. They have ordered the parts twice and the 1st 1 came to them broken from the Factory, This part was recalled for all 2015 models, but not the 2016? Receiving broken parts even shows that there is an issue. I have read on some of your sites from others posting about their 2016 Colorado and Canyons having this same issue. Please look into this and try to help me if possible. I am beyond frustrated. Thank you very much

Without any notice the stabiltrak and service power steering message will come on while driving and the power steering will stop working. While researching it looks like this issue was resolved with a recall on the 2015 models which has the same components as the 2016 version. This is a life-threatening issue when you are driving on a busy road and have to make a turn or swerve to avoid an accident and it looks like many are online sharing the same concern and asking for a recall. This has happened 3 times in the past year and resets when you turn the vehicle off for a short time and start it back up,

The problem: Electrical connectors within the power steering system may corrode and fail, which can cause the power steering system to stop working. The fix: GM dealerships will replace the steering gear torque sensor cover assembly with an updated part that is designed not to corrode. This was a recall on the 2015 GMC Canyon. The 2016 is having the same issue but GMC will not assist with the fix for my year. $3000 estimate to correct the problem. It Is also a safety issue. I nearly lost control when my steering went out while driving on interstate 79 with my daughter in the truck. Please help if you can.

Feb 12, 2024

We have lost power steering several times. We did take it to our local GMC Dealer and they supposedly fixed the problem by re-programming the Steering Sensor. We have since had several unexpected failures that put us in dangerous situations and have been very lucky in not had collisions or off-road accidents We sought answers and looked to the internet In researching this problem. We could occasionally get steering back after parking, shutting off engine, then restarting it. We now only drive the truck very little knowing we could have a steering failure anytime. This is not a sustainable or reasonable situation. We have found that the NHTSA issued a recall for replacement of the Steering Sensor Cover in 2015 , but did not for 2016 and beyond model years for the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. We implore the NHTSA to recall all of the aforementioned vehicles that experienced this failure. Please help us by defraying the cost of replacement and programming and hold GM to repair our unit, and all of the others needing repair. This expense ethically and morally should be borne by GM. A response is expected and appreciated.Thank You.

Complete loss of power steering and traction control while driving. Very difficult to make turns. Would have to pull off the road and restart vehicle to fix problem. I have not taken it to a service center. It has not been inspected. Warning lights for loss of stabilitrak do come on.

Feb 7, 2024

Vehicle intermittently and suddenly loses power steering. This started happening more often. Restarting vehicle usually restores power steering. Losing power steering while driving was very dangerous, as steering became much more difficult, especially if mid-turn.

I lose steering like the recall says, would like dealer to fix this as part of existing recall

Dec 20, 2023

Driving down the road and power (electric) steering goes out. Power steering and traction control warnings lit up on the display. Almost impossible to steer without power steering. I am lucky that this didn't cause an accident-- very scary. This seems to be the same issue as the recall for the 2015s, but GM didn't recall the 2016s (even though online forums report that it was the same part number for 2016 as 2015). Reported same codes when the truck was the same as those reported by others (C0545: Steering Wheel Torque Sensor, also U0420: invalid data reported from steering control module). Upload button below disappears when I try to upload my invoice--but invoice included remove and replace of rack and pinion, diagnosis, alignment-- total invoice $2003.78

The contact owns a 2016 GMC Canyon. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the "Service Power Steering" message was displayed, and the contact became aware that the electric power steering was not functioning properly. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The traction control warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the steering column shaft torque sensor. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V054000 (Steering), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 146,000.

Driving on expressway power steering went out, very hard to steer, warning light came on. Upon reaching destination, turned vehicle off, then back on, fixed the issue. This has happened again, two more times over a period of three months. This appears to resemble NHTSAC 16V054, or GMC recall N202325410. GMC dealer informed me vehicle reports diagnostic code C0545 which reflects the same issue as the above campaign and recall. This is very dangerous.

power steering shows stabillitrack and I lose control.

Oct 28, 2023

On Monday, 10/23/23 I was driving up a mountain to go on a leisurely hike at Fremont State Park, CA. While I was ascending up the mountain the "Service Power Steering and Service Stabilitrack" warning dash alert came on. From then on, I lost power steering and had to struggle driving up the mountain. After my hike and having restarted my vehicle, Power Steering returned. However, while I descended down the mountain, I lost Power Steering again and had to struggle steering my vehicle down the mountain (this scared me quite a bit and placed my safety at risk). It's been five days since I had this problem. I haven't had any issues since then. I primarily drive on Highways, but now I'm nervous driving up hills or mountains with switchbacks. No. Right now, I don't have the means to pay for a scan or fix. I'm not planning to drive up a mountain anytime soon. However, before I drive up mountains or hills with switchbacks, I plan to get it checked and fixed if possible. There weren't any warning or messages before this incident.

The vehicle’s power steering and stability control (Stabilitrak) have stopped working suddenly several times over the past two weeks. There have been no warnings leading up to the loss of power steering .This has happened while I have been traveling at highway speeds as well as in the middle of making a turn and has nearly led to crashes on a couple of occasions. It has also happened at lower speeds as well as upon starting the vehicle with no rhyme or reason. The vehicle has not been inspected for this issue but is available for inspection if necessary. I understand that this same issue has also led to a recall on the previous year’s model (2015 GMC Canyon).

Sudden loss of power steering. Happened to me a lot a times. Sometimes when I driving on a freeway already took it to the GMC. Paid money and the problem is not solved.

Aug 31, 2023

Aug 31, 2023 Power steering failure. Aug 31, 2023 I started the vehicle, warning bell chimed, dash warning to "service power steering" appeared. Then dash warning, of vehicle stability control appeared. Steering wheel was extremely difficult to turn. I shut the vehicle off and restarted, which momentarily cleared the problem. I backed out of the driveway and the problem described above returned along with the inability to turn the wheel. I shut the ignition off and restarted the truck, which cleared the problem. I attempted a short drive, and the problem (described above) returned within a 1/4 mile at a speed of 30 mph. I managed (with difficulty) to safely drive the vehicle to the shoulder as I was driving in a straight line at the time of the incident. No mechanic or service personnel have inspected or diagnosed this problem as yet. I have scheduled an apptointment with my mechanic. In my opinion the vehicle is unsafe to operate at this time both to the occupants and the general public. No recalls are currently issued on the vehicle, although the vehicle manufacturer has had prior issues with the 2015 model which mirror the issues on the 2016 model which was recognized by GMC as a safety issue in regards the prior year, the manufacturer (gmc) has not recognized the 2016 issue as a safety problem and subsequent safety recall has not been issued.

The stabilitrak power steering system fails randomly at high speeds causing loss of control and risk of crashing. This is a known problem to GMC and a recall was issued for 2015 canyon trucks requiring the dealer to replace the steering gear torque sensor cover assembly free of charge due to defective electrical connections within the assembly. They have excluded 2016 and it is a serious problem. This problem is widely reported on GMC and Chevy forums and Reddit for 2016 models. It’s essentially all over the internet for anyone willing to simply look. The error “loss of power steering, proceed with caution” appears as does the lane departure light and check engine light. The errors “Stabilitrack has failed” “Torque sensor failure” Fault Code C0545 also appear. After shutting the car off and restarting , all error codes and lights disappear and do not appear on a code reader. The issue then happens sporadically again at very dangerous times. It is the exact same issue as the 2015 recall # 21V213000 issued on Mar 25, 2021 but GMC refuses to help. The problem is a defective torque censor connection. Please help. I don’t want to die on the freeway.

Aug 10, 2023

While driving at 70 MPH on the interstate approaching a bend in the path of travel the "service traction control" warning was displayed on the instrument panel display and just after that the electronic power steering stopped working causing a near collision with a vehicle in the adjacent lane. The local GMC dealership noted a recall for the 2015 Canyon model for the steering gear torque sensor cover assembly to be replaced due to corroded electrical connections. The number (15595) recall was not associated with my VIN but should be added as part of the vehicles in the recall as it is experiencing the same issues.

Vehicle Stability Control systems light comes on sporadically and stalls the power steering. In other words, the power steering turns off at any time and dangerously on a highway, when the Vehicle Stability Control lights comes on the dashboard. The first diagnosis (May27, 2023) of the above issue was performed at Green Brooks, a Certified NJ GMC Service Dealership yielded no results from their inspection. A second diagnosis was needed due to the vehicle's malfunctioning danger to me and other drivers on the road. The Certified GMC Service Dealership Ewing Buick/GMC TX diagnosis (June 12, 2023) showed a "STEERING GEAR INTERNAL TORQUE SENSOR" costing two thousand one hundred and eight dollars and fifty cents ($2,108.50) to complete. The codes were C0545 00 stored in DSCM followed by S14849247 requiring Steering Gear Replacement. The total cost including labor cost was two thousand seven hundred and ninety dollars and eighty-eight cents ($2,719.88).

The problem: the power steering disables at high speeds suddenly due to a potential poor electrical connection within the steering gear assembly. The hazards: a loss of power steering makes it more difficult for me to maintain control of my vehicle and in turn increases my risk of a crash. This problem requires steering inputs with increased effort. It clears with a power cycle to the truck but then reoccurs randomly.

Apr 7, 2023

While driving in excess of 40mph, my truck experience two warning lights "Service: Stabilitrak" and "Service: Power Steering Drive With Care", and my power steering immediately went out and my steering was very difficult and had to maneuver off the road and through traffic to the side of the road, and was very fearful for my safety and others around me on the road when this happened. I could not turn the vehicle without a tremendous amount of effort. After pulling to the side of the road, I immediately shutoff the vehicle and restarted and the steering and messages were gone. I began driving down the road and it happened again within 5 minutes. I shutdown and it reset again. I then proceeded to the GMC Dealer in West Chester Pa (Faulkner) to determine if they are familiar with this problem and they said they've never heard of this and couldn't find anything wrong with the truck otherthan a couple Codes unrelated to any Steering problems.

The Power starting keeps going out while driving it. Once vehicle is turned off and back on it resets and works again. There is active recall for this exact issue but only in 2015 models and mine is a 2016 so told it isn’t a part of recall. It happened a few times several months ago but GMC service center couldn’t get problem to recreate and I didn’t have good documentation for the few times it had happened. GMC then offered free onstar for several months to try to help track problem. It hadn’t happened in last several months until Friday. It has now happened 7 times in last 4 days. On star sent me two reports indicating a code of U0240 with ABS system failure code. I took videos and pictures of the dashboard with what was showing. There is service message saying “power stealing drive with care” and “stabilitrak” service message too. GMC not getting me in for another week. I have a new 16 year old driver who drives this vehicle and it’s so unsafe! I don’t understand how I keep being told my vehicle is not included in the recall but it’s the same issue. I have to keep taking pictures and videos and pushing onstar button when it happens.

The contact was able to drive the vehicle by using physical force to steer the vehicle. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle the next day, the vehicle responded as needed. However, upon test driving the vehicle, the failure recurred. The vehicle later responded as needed and was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed and the contact was informed that the steering gear assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to GMC Technical Service Bulletin Number: 15595A and GMC Campaign Number: N202325410. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.

multiple times while driving, whether on main roads or the highway and in various condition, my Traction Control lights come one and stabilizer lights as well then the computer shows Power Steering Failure. I've lost power steering 3 times and it's almost caused 2 accidents. The 2015 GMC Canyon was recalled for this matter and the 2016 model uses the same components. Why isn't the 2016 being recalled? Many GMC Canyon Forums online complain of the same issue. This is going to result in a fatal accident for someone. Please take action!

Power steering will randomly fail while driving. NHTSA recalled 2015 but did nothing for 2016 which is still having the same problems

Oct 20, 2022

Three times we have gotten an alarm that there is a steering malfunction and to drive carefully. We experienced a loss of power steering. We have had it in for service twice. The first time, the dealer reprogrammed the computer, which did not solve the problem. The second time, they said they needed to replace the steering wheel torque sensor, which they tried to order, but said it is not currently available.

Oct 16, 2022

My power steering suddenly went out on the highway. Has now happened a couple times. Stabilatrak also errored. Both times it showed an error message in the display saying "Service Power Steering". There have been no signs of the power steering going bad or noises from the power steering pump to indicate it is mechanical. If I stop the car and restart it the problem goes away.

My 2016 GMC Canyon had a power steering failure and stability warning light while turning off highway with my grandson in the truck. Power steering returned after turning truck off and restarting. The next day, I took it to Rogersville Chevrolet to check and change oil since it was due, however, they could not find anything other than a stability track warning in history. 2 weeks later happened again repeatedly. Dropped it off at dealership, dealer states steering needs total replacement. It is available to inspect, I have not had it replaced yet, dealer asking for over $2000.00 to fix it. Poses safety hazard due to unexpected loss of steering at anytime. Also, this is the same issues that was the subject of recall in the 2015 GMC Canyon. Power steering intermittently failing making steering very difficult without warning beforehand. Warning light appears post failures.

My vehicle a 2016 GMC Canyon loses power steering making it hard to control and it happens driving out of the garage but also sometimes without warning while driving it. One time it happened on a curve and I almost had a headon collision. Dealership, Von Holsen GMC in Ashland Wi. said it is the identical problem that is in a recall for 2015's. Diagnosis by the dealership confirmed that this is the identical to the recall. But they will not cover it because mine is an early 2016. I request that the recall be expanded as they do not have all the vehicles that are effected. Power steering suddenly goes out while driving. I get a ringing and visual notification notifying me that stabilitrak and power steering are not working properly. I have to steer the truck manually. The next day it drives correctly again for 5-10 miles then the exact same issue reappears, and I lose all power steering while on the road at full speed. This issue is recalled in 2015 GMC Canyons, but not on my 2016 model. Please address this issue asap. I'm being told I have to have the whole rack replaced for $2400.

The power steering has locked up twice. Once on 9-12-2022 and again on 9-13-2022. the first time was in a school zone going 25 mph. The 2nd time was in the same area goin 50 mph. The 2nd time it locked up, I recovered before hitting a guard rail. I have an appointment with Wyatt Johnson GMC Buick in Clarkesville, Tennessee on Saturday 9-17-2022 to diagnose the problem. I have had half a dozen incidents in the past month in which I lose electronic power steering and stability control functions. The display will flash a warning and then I lose all power steering. This is extremely dangerous as it is very difficult to steer the truck. It has happened at various speeds. You must shut off the truck and restart to make it go away. This is the exact behavior/issue that was in the 2015 models that have been recalled. My research is showing alot of 2016 models being affected and I believe the recall should be extended to the 2016 models.

Sep 6, 2022

I have been having the issue of the power steering/stabilitrak going out randomly since Feb 2021. I have taken it to 2 different dealerships, both told me the power steering pump is fine & nothing is wrong. The power steering went out completly & now a third dealership is saying exactly what happened with the 2015 models (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID: 21V213000). A $2200 fix! I am keeping my paperwork so I can turn it in whenever the NHTSA FINALLY decides to issue a recall.

Loss of power steering almost crashed in raining weather. Gm says no recalls on my truck but on 2015 gmc canyon that was a problem on those trucks and I think I have a bad power steering. Gm said they can't do anything about it.

Aug 26, 2022

While driving I was alerted from the vehicle message system that my power steering was out. It then made the vehicle incredibly difficult to turn. This has happened on numerous occasions, some while turning, causing me to almost crash. 2015 GMC Canyon's and Chevrolet Colorado's had recalls for the same issue, however, 2016's have not. I have read numerous articles stating owners of these same vehicles with 2016's are having the same problems but GMC isn't recognizing it and the owners are having to foot the bill at the dealership. This a huge safety concern which could ultimately involve death if not handled.

I have experienced 2 power steering failures while driving this vehicle in the past 24 hours. The first happened while driving the vehicle in a parking lot with a passenger. The power steering assist suddenly stopped working and a service light and chime came on. I could barely turn the wheel and narrowly avoided getting into a head on collision. I managed to pull into a parking spot and turned off the vehicle. I restarted and found the steering assist was back on and then drove straight home. The 2nd time happened this morning while driving on a city street. The steering assist turned off, a service light came on, and I pulled into the next parking lot. The steering was difficult and I managed to find a parking spot. Again, I turned off the vehicle and then restarted and it was working again. I am taking the vehicle to my local dealer on Thursday 8/25 to diagnose and repair. I understand that there is a recall for the 2015 GMC Canyon for this exact same issue. Could the 2016 model be affected as well?

When I’m driving I lose power steering and stabilitrak. Took it to free beans in doyelstown and they said they couldn’t find anything. Took to Faulkner gmc in Trevose, said I need a steering rack. It’s on back order and they don’t know when it’ll ship. This is my only vehicle. It’s very unsafe. Happens when I’m going 5mph or 50mph. There has been times when I’m going around a 90 degree turn and I lose my steering.

Driving and the Stabilitrak warning comes on as well as the Power steering warning. later after the vehicle is turned off it will not restart (no crank, no Start) and there is no communication with the ECM until it has had the battery disconnected for an extended period. This is very dangerous losing power steering and stabilitrak while driving is going to cause an accident. I would like to see a recall on the 2016 like there is on the 2015 with this same issue. I have not had the issue repaired yet. waiting to get it into a shop who tells me they will likely need to replace the Rack and Pinion on this truck to correct the issue.

loss of power steering.While driving.

Jul 6, 2022

the power steering routinely fails when driving, creating a dangerous road hazard since it obviously makes it next to impossible to control the steering wheel. I've taken it to the dealer several times now, and they have a different solution, but they can't promise that it will fit the issue. no other symptoms of the problem occur prior to the steering control being lost, but the indicator light on the dashboard does note the steering failure simultaneously when the power steering is lost. Up to now, the only solution, which is very temporary, is to turn the car off and wait 15 seconds or so before starting back up, but that only lasts for 10 miles or so before the steering is lost again. this has been going on for 3 months now.

Jul 2, 2022

I was driving 70 mph on the highway at roughly 6:45 am on Saturday. Luckily there was no traffic due to the early weekend day. There were no indications previous to the power steering going out. Dashboard flashed error after the power steering went out. I was on a bridge and unable to maneuver the steering wheel. I was on a straight patch and slowed down with my hazards on. I stopped my truck and took the keys out and then restarted it and it was fine. I turned around to drive home and it did it again. Twice while I was in the highway at high speeds!!

Jun 28, 2022

Power steering and stabilitrak intermittently go out. Latest episode resulted in power steering failing at low speeds and continuously chiming for service. Stabilitrak error message also comes in notifying service. This issue has happened in the past where I would turn on the vehicle and the power steering would be out without a service warning. After shutting the vehicle off and on again power steering would be back. In the last attempt to drive this error came up and attempting to turn the vehicle off and on again did not fix. It was not until I was about 15 miles down the road that the power steering kicked back in. I believe this may be the same issue as the recall of the 2015 models.

At random times, the power steering will cut off making the vehicle very difficult to steer. This can happen when starting or while driving. It will not come back on until the vehicle is shut off. Sometimes restarting works and sometimes it does not. I have put dielectric grease on the connecters behind the airbag. This seems to help for a while. The condition matches NHTSA Campaign number 21V213000 for power steering issues. However, many 2016 models experience the exact same issue. The dealer will not help. This is my daughters truck and she is not big/strong enough to overcome the loss of power steering.

May 27, 2022

The incident occurred while I was bringing my 18 month old daughter home from daycare. As I was initiating a left hand turn across traffic, the truck suddenly suffered a total loss of power steering. I had already committed to the maneuver when I realized what was happening, but thankfully was able to complete the turn despite struggling to apply enough force to the wheel. I then immediately pulled to the side of the road and parked. I believe multiple warning messages displayed, but I was concentrating on reaching safety and didn't see them all. I did see that one of the messages indicated Stabilitrack had failed. After the vehicle sat for several hours, I returned and started the vehicle, at which point the errors had cleared and power steering had been restored, at least temporarily. I took the truck to a non-dealer repair shop, who did discover a stored error code: C0545 - Steering Wheel Torque Sensor Malfunction. As the sensor is highly integrated into the steering system, the repair required the replacement of the entire rack and pinion component. In order to avoid living with the threat of intermittent power steering failure endangering my family at any moment, I had no choice but to authorize this very expensive repair.

The Stabilitrek system will automatically activate while driving resulting in a loss of power steering when there are no hazards or conditions to cause it. When this happens, I cannot turn it off, and have to pull over and turn my car off for 30 seconds to turn it off and gain power steering again.

May 8, 2022

Driving on a freeway at about 60 mph my power steering stopped working. Luckily I was driving and not my wife. I don't think she could have steered the truck since it took a lot to merge out of the freeway. The message on the dash said (power steering service. Drive careful.) I made it into a parking lot nearby and turned the key off then back on and the power steering worked again and the message was gone.

While driving, the power steering and stabillitrac warnings come on, and I lose power steering. When I stop, turn the vehicle off, and restart the vehicle, the power sterring returns. This has happened three times in the past week, ranging in speed from 5 mph to 65 mph.

Feb 3, 2022

While driving my power steering warning light comes on and it is hard to turn the wheel. This has happened three times now on 1-3-22, 1-26-22, and 2-3-22. And I am just driving in town.

Key is not pulling out of ignition after truck has been put in park. Mechanic has replaced the shifter twice, and yet the problem is more pronounced. The Dealership (Anthony GMC) has now stated there is no problem, and yet the key wont come out for them either.

Oct 21, 2021

As I started the vehicle I got a notification that the power steering has Maldonado I got a few warning lights on the dashboard. As I drove the vehicle the power steering did not work and it makes it hard to steer. This has been happening for a week now

Oct 20, 2021

While driving on a six lane hwy in heavy traffic at 55 mph the power steering module failed making it dangerously hard to steer. Took the truck to the GMC dealership, the technician determined the power steering module had failed and it was replaced. A warning message did display indicating the power steering was not working.

Oct 14, 2021

While driving the power steering stopped functioning and an error message popped up stating that it was not working. I stopped the vehicle turned off the ignition and restarted the vehicle and the power steering began working. This has happened twice in the past month.

Oct 4, 2021

power Steering quit while driving.

Sep 24, 2021

The power steering stopped working and my wife had to make an emergency stop on I 95. We turned the vehicle off and restarted it and the power steering worked again for awhile. The next day it happened 2 more times. I think this is the same issue as the 2015 recall. I called my GMC dealer and they said they could not help me because my Vin was not on the recall list.

Sep 16, 2021

Power steering fails intermittently while driving resulting in difficult steering and potential loss of control of vehicle.

Jul 16, 2021

Power steering shuts off while driving. I have to stop the vehicle and turn off and then re-start to get the power steering back working. This can happen at any time regardless of when or how long I've been driving. The power steering seems to shut off for no reason.

Jul 12, 2021

On three occasions the power steering malfunction warning came on. Brought it to Prime GMC. Both times software updates were performed. On third time they said needs new steering column. The steering is very difficult at low speeds. I can clear situation by turning off and back on.

Jun 27, 2021

The power steering intermittently fails, and the vehicle is almost impossible to steer during the failure. I took the vehicle to GM dealer, Ultimate Auto GMC/BUICK in Mountain Home, Arkansas. They told me the fix would be to replace a power steering module and the cost would be $1,600. I was aware the previous year's model had the same problem and was recalled. I called GM and they would not help with a recall. To me it is obvious that my truck has the same problem as the 2015 model, but they won't admit it. My safety was at risk because I could hardly turn the truck. I do get a warning message on the dash display.

THE POWER STEERING HAS GONE OUT WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE 4 TIMES IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS. THE LAST TIME, MY WIFE ALMOST HAD AN ACCIDENT. SHE WAS TURNING INTO S DRIVEWAY AND LAST POWER STEERING AND ALMOST HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE BECAUSE SHE HAD TROUBLE TURNING THE TRUCK. I FOUND OUT GMC IS RECALLING ABOUT 60,000 VEHICLES FOR THIS ISSUE BUT MY VEHICLE IS NOT ON THE LIST SO I WANT TO REPORT THE PROBLEM TO YOUR AGENCY SO YOU HAVE IT ON RECORD IN CASE I HAVE AN ACCIDENT

I WILL BE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, MY POWER STEERING WOULD GO OUT. SOMETIMES IT WOULD GO OUT JUST DRIVING DOWN A RESIDENTIAL ROAD GOING 25 OR 30 MILES AN HOUR. I WOULD HAVE TO STOP SOMEPLACE, TURN IT OFF AND WAIT A WHILE AND THEN TURN IT BACK ON AND IT WOULD WORK AGAIN. IF I DON'T WAIT LONG ENOUGH, THE POWER STEERING STILL WOULDN'T WORK AFTER RESTARTING. WHEN THIS WOULD HAPPEN, THE "SERVICE POWER STEERING" LIGHT WOULD COME ON. ALSO, "STABILITRACK" LIGHT WOULD COME ON.

GM CASE #[XXX]; GM RECALL BULLETIN: 15595A NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION CAMPAIGN ID FOR RECALL: 16V054 GM ISSUED A RECALL BULLETIN RELATED TO A DEFECT IN CERTAIN 2015 GMC CANYON TRUCKS DUE TO LOSS OF POWER STEERING DUE TO A POOR ELECTRICAL CONNECTION WITHIN THE TORQUE SENSOR HARNESS CONNECTOR. THIS PRESENTS A GREATER RISK OF A CRASH AND A SAFETY CONCERN. MY NAME IS [XXX] AND I OWN A 2016 GMC CANYON VIN #[XXX]. MY STABILITY TRACK INDICATOR CAME ON AND MY POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING. I TOOK MY VEHICLE INTO A GM DEALER AND WAS CHARGED $180 TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD DUE TO LOW VOLTAGE THE RECOMMENDATION WAS A NEW BATTERY. THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED COSTING ME AN ADDITIONAL $140. THE NEXT DAY, THE STABILITY TRACK INDICATOR CAME ON AND MY POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING AGAIN. I TOOK IT INTO THE GM DEALER AGAIN AND WAS TOLD THIS TIME THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH MY TORQUE SENSOR WHICH IS THE SAME ISSUE IN THE RECALL BULLETIN #15595A FOR THE 2015 TRUCKS RELATED TO POWER STEERING. CONCERNED AND FRUSTRATED, I CALLED GM AND WAS ISSUED WITH THE AFOREMENTIONED CASE #. I WAS TOLD SOMEONE WOULD CALL ME, WHICH NO ONE DID. THE DEALER THEN INFORMED ME THAT GM WOULD COVER 80% OF THE COST STILL LEAVING ME WITH A BILL OF $734! I WROTE THIS COMPLIANT TO GMC FOR SEVERAL REASONS AND INCLUDING NHTSA DUE TO THE SAFETY ISSUE. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY THE SAME ISSUE BEING EXPERIENCED IN THE 2016 TRUCKS NOT JUST THE 2015 TRUCKS. I AM BRINGING ATTENTION TO THIS ISSUE AS THIS ISSUE MAY CONSTITUTE A RECALL NEEDED FOR THE 2016 WHICH HASN'T BEEN DONE. THIS IS NOT ONLY CONCERNING AS THE ISSUE PRESENTS RISK OF A CRASH, A SAFETY CONCERN AND OWNERS LIKE ME HAVING TO INCUR OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES. I AM REQUESTING AN INVESTIGATION INTO MY ISSUE AND FOR GMC CONSIDERATION OF REIMBURSEMENT OF $734 IN ADDITION TO $320 OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

POWER STEERING GOES OUT WHILE VEHICLE IS MOVING AT EITHER NORMAL SPEED OR LOW SPEED. ERROR MESSAGES APPEAR INDICATING LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND TRACTION LIGHT COMES ON. SHUTTING DOWN ENGINE AND RESTARTING CAN CLEAR. IF SHUTTING DOWN DOESN'T WORK DISCONNECTING BATTERY CABLE CAN CLEAR THE PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED NUMEROUS TIMES OVER SEVERAL DAYS. IT OCCURRED BOTH ON CITY STREETS AND RURAL HIGHWAY. IT OCCURRED DURING TURNS AND WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT. IT OCCURRED AT NORMAL HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND AT LOWER PARKING LOT SPEEDS. THIS OCCURRED SIX TIMES IN ONE DAY. AFTER CLEARING THE LAST TIME WE RETURNED HOME AND TOOK THE TRUCK TO A GM REPAIR SHOP. THIS SAME PROBLEM HAS BEEN RECALLED IN THE 2015 GMC CANYON (RECALL N202313200). THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING ALLOWED THE 63 YEAR OLD FEMALE DRIVER TO EASE OFF THE RURAL HIGHWAY HOWEVER WHEN THE POWER STEERING FAILED IN A CITY PARKING LOT THE MALE DRIVER HAD TO USE ALL HIS STRENGTH TO STEER THE VEHICLE. IN THE EVENT THIS HAD OCCURRED WITH THE FEMALE DRIVER IN A SITUATION WHERE A TURN HAD TO BE NAVIGATED SHE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE STRENGTH TO NEGOTIATE THE TURN POSSIBLY CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY OR PROPERTY DAMAGE. OWNER HAS OPTED TO HAVE REPAIRED AT HIS OWN COST DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS. TOTAL COST TO REPLACE THE STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY INCLUDING THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE WAS $1565.21

II WAS DRIVING MY GMC CANYON AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AND THE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND "LOSS OF POWER STEERING, DRIVE WITH CARE". I PARKED THE CARE AND WAITED 15 MINUTES, RESTARTED THE TRUCK AND THE WARNING LIGHT WENT OFF AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME WITHOUT A PROBLEM. THE NEXT DAY I WAS DRIVING AT LOW SPEED AND THE SAME WARNING LIGHT CAME ON WITH THE ADDITIONAL WARNINGS OF "STABILITRAK" AND "STEERING ASSIST REDUCED" AND I LOST POWER STEERING. I PULLED OVER AND RESTARTED THE TRUCK AND THE LIGHT STAYED ON AND I HAD NO POWER STEERING. I CONTINUED DRIVING HOME WITHOUT POWER STEERING AND STOPPED FOR A SHORT WHILE AND WHEN I RESTARTED THE TRUCK I HAD POWER STEERING AGAIN. I DID A WEB SEARCH AND IT SAID 2015 AND 2016 CANYONS AND COLORADO'S WERE HAVING THIS ISSUE BUT ONLY 3000 WE RECALLED. I WANTED TO MAKE YOU AWARE OF MY PROBLEM AND SEE IF THE RECALL SHOULD BE FOR MORE THAN THE 3000 VEHICLES.

THE POWER STEERING HAS GONE OUT COMPLETELY ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. VEHICLE IS VERY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL ESPECIALLY WHEN ON INTERSTATE AT HIGHER RATE OF SPEED. THIS IS DANGEROUS. IT IS A SHAME THAT GMC ONLY INCLUDED 2015 CANYONS IN RECALL AND NOT 2016 BUT ALSO THAT NHTSA HAS NOT INTERVENED ON THIS VERY DANGEROUS MALFUNCTION.

I WAS DRIVING THE LISTED TRUCK ON A SIX LANE HIGHWAY (270) IN MISSOURI WHEN MY POWER STEERING COMPLETELY FAILED. I WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY BY USING EVERY BIT OF STRENGTH I HAD AND I'M A SIX FOOT TALL 200LB MAN. IT WAS SATURDAY BUT I WAS ABLE TO GET THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER AND PROVIDED THEM WITH A MEMO DETAILING THE FAILURE. THEY WERE CLOSED FOR THE WEEKEND. THE STEERING HAD BEEN ACTING SUSPECT BEFORE AND IN FACT I HAD AN APPOINTMENT THE FOLLOWING MONDAY TO HAVE IT CHECKED. HAD IT BEEN MY WIFE OR GRANDDAUGHTER DRIVING WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED THE RESULTS MIGHT HAVE BEEN TRAGIC. FOLLOWING MY EXPERIENCE I DID A SOCIAL MEDIA SEARCH AND FOUND MANY INCIDENTS IDENTICAL TO MINE WITH THE SAME TYPE OF TRUCK. MY TRUCK IS A GMC AND THE CHEVY COLORADO IS THE SAME. THIS TRUCK HAD 62,000 MILES AND I HAVE OWNED IT SINCE IT WAS NEW. THE STEERING PUMP IS ELECTRICAL WHICH REPLACED AN OLD AND PROVEN HYDRAULIC STYLE THAT RARELY FAILED. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING 60 YEARS AND NEVER HAD ONE FAIL . I QUESTION THE ABILITY OF GM ENGINEERING TO DESIGN A NEW TYPE OF PUMP THAT IS RELIABLE. THEIR INABILITY TO DO SO RESULTS IN A $1900 REPAIR NOT TO MENTION A POTENTIAL LOSS OF LIFE. IN MY CASE GM DID PICK UP A PORTION OF THE REPAIR BUT MY SHARE STILL EQUALED $750.
