THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED, I STARTED THE VEHICLE AND LEFT THE PARKING LOT, STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN, PROCEEDED INTO THE ROADWAY AND ENGINE DIED. EVERYTHING WENT OFF - ALL POWER ALL ELECTRICAL. I HAD JUST PURCHASED THE VEHICLE SECOND HAND AND THE OWNER TOLD ME LATER THAT SHE HAD BATTERY PROBLEMS, BUT SHE PUT IN A NEW BATTERY. THE DEALER COULD NOT FIX IT. MY HUSBAND FIGURED IT WAS THE IGNITION SWITCH. I KEPT THE CAR FOR TWELVE YEARS AND HAD TO CHANGE IT TWICE, PLUS THE INITIAL REPAIR WAS WARRANTIED. WHEN IT FIRST OCCURRED IN 2000 I LOOKED FOR A RECALL, BUT THERE WAS NONE. I REMEMBER THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD A VERY LARGE KEYCHAIN, AND WE DID FIGURE OUT ON OUR OWN TO CARRY A SINGLE KEY, BUT AFTER ABOUT 5-6 YEARS YOU STILL NEED TO CHANGE THE IGNITION, YOU CAN TELL CAUSE THE ELECTRONICS START GOING WACKY IN THE VEHICLE. THEN IT WON'T START, LIKE YOU THINK ITS THE BATTERY. IT IS SAD THAT PEOPLE DIED FROM THIS AND THAT GMC CANNOT ADMIT THAT THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON, I KNOW SINCE 1998. I NOW KNOW WHY I GOT SUCH A GOOD DEAL ON THE VEHICLE, THAT PERSON COULD HAVE KILLED ME, BY NOT TELLING ME THE TRUTH! *TR

I HAVE A GMC JIMMY THAT IS EXPERIENCING MULTIPLE DASHBOARD FAILURES. WHEN I FILL THE GAS TANK THE GAUGE GOES TO EMPTY, THEN WHEN I DRIVE A WHILE IT GOES TO FULL AND THEN BACK TO EMPTY. I NEVER HAVE A PARTIALLY FULL READING. ALSO THE AIR BAG LIGHT COMES OFF AND ON. MY OIL PRESSURE GAUGE REVES UP AND DOWN LIKE I AM OUT OF OIL. I PULL OFF THE ROAD AND CHECK AND THE OIL IS FINE. I AM NOT SURE WHAT TO DO ABOUT THIS. I TOOK IT TO THE GM DEALER AND THEY WANT MORE THAN I CAN AFFORD JUST TO LOOK AT IT AND CAN'T GUARANTEE ANYTHING. I WAS DRIVING A 1998GMC JIMMY FROM OKLAHOMA CITY, OK TO WALTERS, OK. EVERYTHING WAS GREAT AND THE CAR WAS DRIVING PERFECTLY. I WAS ON THE HE BAILEY TURNPIKE ON HIGHWAY MARKER 30 - I COULD SEE THE SIGN AND PULL OFF FOR THE FAXON EXIT AND THE BIG SIGN FOR WALTERS. A FEW WISPS OF WHITE SMOKE APPEARED AND THEN HEAVY GREY SMOKE STARTED TO BILLOW INTO MY FACE THROUGH THE RIGHT SIDE VENT OF THE DRIVER'S SEAT. I STARTED TO COUGH AND COULDN'T SEE SO I PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. AS I GOT OUT OF THE CAR, I PULLED THE HOOD RELEASE AND RAN TO THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLES. UNDER THE HOOD, HALF OF THE ENGINE BAY WAS ALREADY BURNED AWAY - LIKE THE BOTTLE FOR ANTI-FREEZE AND HOSES.... THE WHOLE ENGINE BAY WAS ON FIRE. THE CAR WAS GONE AT THAT POINT - THERE WAS NO WAY TO SAVE IT. I RAN TO THE PASSENGER FRONT SEAT AND GRABBED A BASKET THAT HAD MY CENSUS ID AND I THREW IT AWAY FROM THE CAR. I GRABBED SOME CDS THEN TOO, BUT THEY WERE ON FIRE. THE DASH WAS ON FIRE AND WAS SPREADING INTO THE FRONT SEAT. I THREW THE CDS IN THE DIRT TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. I GRABBED THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR OF THE BACK SEAT AND GRABBED A HAMPER WITH PRESENTS FOR MY DAUGHTER. I RAN TO THE OTHER SIDE BACK SEAT AND GRABBED THE LEGAL PAPERS OF CENSUS APPLICANTS - THEY WERE ON FIRE AND I SNUFFED OUT THE FIRE IN THE DIRT. I GRABBED MY JEAN JACKET WITH MY MILITARY ID AND DRIVER'S LICENSE - THE BACK SEAT AND FRONT SEAT WERE ON FIRE AND I RAN AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE AND IT FIREBALLED AND EXPLODED. TWO MEN FROM THE TURNPIKE MAINTENANCE SAW ME DRIVING - SMOKING POURING OUT FRONT HE VEHICLE; THEY SAW ME PULL OUT ON THE SHOULDER AND SAW ME RUNNING TO SALVAGE WHAT I COULD FROM THE BURNING VEHICLE. THEY CAME TO HELP ME AND CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND HIGHWAY PATROL. MINOR INJURIES I HAD SMOKE INHALATION, MINOR BURNS TO FACE - SOOT ON HANDS & FEET. DRIVE AN 1998 GMC JIMMY WITH AROUND 172,000 MILES ON IT (I KNOW THIS IS A LOT OF MILES). HAD THE LOCAL GM DEALER WORK ON MY REAR DEFROSTER (ONE OF THE CLIPS FELL OFF). AFTER RECEIVING THE VEHICLE BACK FROM THE DEALER I TURNED MY DEFROSTER ON ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER. THE BACK WINDOW EXPLODED LIKE A SHOTGUN AFTER ABOUT 15-20 SECONDS. DEALER SAYS REAR DEFROSTER VOLTAGE REGULATOR MUST HAVE WENT BAD. I ARGUED THAT A FUSE SHOULD HAD BLOWN BEFORE AN EXPLOSION TOOK PLACE. GM COMPLAINT DEPARTMENT ALSO DISAGREES, SAYING THAT THE VEHICLE IS OLD AND THINGS LIKE THIS HAPPEN. LUCKILY, NO ONE WAS STANDING BY THE REAR WINDOW WHEN IT EXPLODED BECAUSE IT PROBABLY WOULD HAVE KILLED THEM. IF I'M WRONG TELL ME I'M WRONG BUT I BELIEVE GM IS RESPONSIBLE FOR NO ONLY REPLACING THE WINDOW BUT FIXING THE REAR DEFROSTER VOLTAGE REGULATOR. I HOPE THIS IS AN ISOLATED CASE BUT MAYBE BY REPORTING THIS I CAN PREVENT SOMEONE FROM GETTING HURT (INCLUDING A GM TECHNICIAN). *TR

KEY GETS LOCKED IN THE IGNITION AND I CAN'T REMOVE IT, THE DASH LIGHTS AND GAUGES DO NOT WORK AND TRANSMISSION DOESN'T START OFF IN 1ST GEAR. THIS HAS HAPPENED 4 OTHER TIMES AND EVERYTIME I HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE IGNITION SWITCH REPLACED AND THIS IS IN A 3 YEAR PERIOD. THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE WORTH PROBLEM ON THESE VEHICLES. *JB
TURN SIGNAL AND HAZARD LIGHT FAILURE, ELECTRIC WINDOW CONTROL FAILURE OFF AND ON. *NM
I HAVE A GMC JIMMY AND THE ELECTRICAL SWITCH KEEPS GOING ON IT. FOR TWO YEARS NOW THIS IS THE THRID ONE I HAD TO REPLACE. WHEN THE SWITCH GOES, YOU NO LONGER HAVE ANY DASH LIGHTS AND YOUR TRANSMISSION DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY. YOU ONLY HAVE 2ND, AND 3RD GEAR WHICH CAUSES A HAZARD BECAUSE YOU HAVE VERY LITTLE POWER WHEN YOU ARE AT A COMPLETE STOP AND THEN PROCEED TO GO. YOU BETTER MAKE SURE NOTHING IS COMING AS FAR AS YOU CAN SEE BECAUSE YOU START OUT VERY VERY SLOWLY AND IT TAKES A WHILE TO GET GOING AT A FASTER RATE TO KEEP UP WITH TRAFFIC. YOU ALSO DO NOT KNOW ON HOW FAST YOU ARE TRAVELING FOR A SAFE SPEED. I FIND THIS PROBLEM TO BE VERY DANGEROUS FOR THE DRIVER AND OTHERS OUT THERE ON THE ROAD AND CONSIDERING IT HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES WITHIN 2 YEARS, I BELIEVE SOMETHING SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO FURTHER ON THIS.

I USUALLY CAN GET THEM WORKING BY TURNING THEM ON/OFF A FEW TIMES. INTERMITTENT MODE TAKES A LONG TIME(3-10 SECONDS) TO START RUNNING IN BEST SCENARIO. 3) BOTH FRONT RECLINING SEAT LEVERS BROKE OFF(BRITTLE METAL ROD)WITHIN FIRST 3 YEARS OF USAGE. I HAVE NOT REPLACED DUE TO COST OF REPLACING COMPLETE SEAT ASSEMBLIES IS ONLY FIX. 4) 12/04 MILEAGE=129,518 THROTTLE CHOKE PLATE ASSEMBLY DISINTEGRATED PARTIALLY AND JAMMED THROTTLE OPEN. THIS ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT AS COULD NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP WHILE CAR WAS RUNNING. AFTER BROKEN PIECE WORKED ITS WAY PAST THE VALVES I NEEDED $1900 IN CYLINDER HEAD REPAIRS. *JB

SINCE OWNING THIS VEHICLE, TWO PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN CHRONIC. #1 THE DRIVERS SIDE WINDOW DOES NOT FULLY OPEN NOR CLOSE WITHOUT ASSISTANCE. #2 THE BLINKER SOUND COMES ON FOR NO REASON AND STAYS ON FOR RANDOM LENGTHS OF TIME. TAPPING ON THE BRAKE WILL TURN OFF THE BLINKER NOISE FOR A SHORT TIME, BUT IT COMES BACK ON OFTEN. YES, I HAVE REPLACED THE FUSES MULTIPLE TIMES.*AK

I HAVE 86,000 MILES ON MY 1998 JIMMY AND DROPPED MY GRANDDAUGHTER OFF AT THE MY OTHER DAUGHTERS PLACE, THE KEY TURNED OFF NO PROBLEM. I DROVE TO WORK AND COULD NOT TURN THE KEY TO THE ACC OR OFF POSITION AND COULD NOT GET THE KEY OUT. I CHECKED THE WEBSITE AND NOTICED THAT THIS HAPPENED TO A COUPLE OF OTHER OWNERS WHO ENDED UP PAYING OVER $700.00 FOR THE REPAIR, WHICH INCLUDED REPLACING THE IGNITION MODULE AND REPROGRAMMING. THIS HAPPENED AT A TIME WHEN I AM GOING THROUGH A DIVORCE, MY OTHER DAUGHTER IS IN THE HOSPITAL AND MY FATHER IS HAVING HEART PROBLEMS, SO IT REALLY IS INCONVENIENT AND WITH ALL THAT IS GOING ON, HAS CHANGED MY ATTITUDE REGARDING GMC'S. I USED TO SWEAR BY THEM, NOW I AM THINKING OF LOOKING AT OTHER DEALERS. I HAD THE HEAD GASKET BLOW ON THIS MODEL, WHEN THEY REPAIRED IT, THEY DROPPED A BOLT DOWN INSIDE THE PISTON, WHICH THEY DID NOT CATCH UNTIL IT CRACKED THE PISTON, WHICH DELAYED ME GETTING MY VEHICLE BACK. THEY MISDIAGNOSED A CONTROL MODULE THAT WOULD SOUND LIKE THE SIGNAL KEPT TURNING ON BY ITSELF, THEY REPLACED MY BRAKE PADS STATING THAT GOODYEAR INSTALLED THEM WRONG, BECAUSE THEY KEPT SQUEAKING. I PAID $200.00 TO HAVE THEM REPLACED AND THEY STILL SQUEAK. THIS WAS DONE AT JIM LUPIENT IN ST. LOUIS PARK. THE TECHNICIAN AFTER REPAIRING THE ENGINE FORGOT TO TIGHTEN THE AIR INTAKE CLAMP DOWN AND IT VIBRATED AGAINST THE AIR-CONDITIONING HOSE, WHICH CUT A HOLD IN THE HOSE AND DRAINED ALL THE FREON. WHEN THEY REPAIRED THE HOSE, THEY DID NOT EVACUATE THE LINES, SO THE AIR-CONDITIIONER SOUNDS LIKE IT GURGLES AT STARTUP OR WHEN YOU STEP ON THE GAS.*AK
EVERYTIME I START MY VEHICLE, ALL THE PANEL LIGHTS COMES ON. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THE VEHICLE HAS A BAD WIRING PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE HAVE TROUBLE CRANKING MOST TIMES AND THE COMPRESSOR HAS DIED FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE ENDS UP IN A FATAL ACCIDENT.

I UNDERSTAND FROM THE DEALER THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE FLOOR SHIFTER, IF THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WHY ISN'T THERE A RECALL. THIS IS DANGEROUS KEYS LEFT IN THE IGNITION CAN LEAD TO SOMEONE TAKING THE CAR WITHOUT PERMISSION ESPECIALLY A CHILD. *JB

LAST WEEK TRUCK LOST ALL POWER AND I COULD NOT GET MY KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION,ONCE ALL POWER WAS BACK KEY CAME LOOSE.I HAVE HAD A PROBLEM WITH MUFFLER SINCE 1ST MONTH SOUNDS LIKE A HOLE IN THE EXHAUST AND MAKES A LOUD PING SOUND ,DEALER JUST TOLD ME I NEEDED TO REPLACE MUFFLER.WHEN IN REVERSE AND BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY A LOUD CLUNK SOUND FROM FRONT PASSENGER SIDE.HAVE LOST POWER 2 TIMES WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET.HAVE ALSO NOTICED THAT WHEN I TURN ANYTHING ON IN THE CAR I AM LOSING A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF POWER .THIS INCLUDES BLINKERS,RADIO,A/C ,IF THEY ARE ALL ON MY VOLTS DROP TO ALMOST 11.*AK
I HAVE HAD TWO INSTANCES OF BATTERY FAILURE - ACDELCO 75-6YR, THE FIRST AT THE ABOVE DATE AND THE SECOND ON 08/05/2002. BOTH FAILURES WERE THE SAME - THE POSITIVE BATTERY POLE BROKE OUT OF THE BATTERY SPILLING THE ACID OUT OF THE BATTERY AND ONTO THE COMPONENTS BELOW THE BATTERY. THE ACID COULD SPILL ONTO CRITICAL COMPONENTS SUCH AS BRAKE LINES, FLUID HOSES AND ELECTRICAL WIRES AS WELL AS EATING AWAY MOUNTS THAT SECURE THE BATTERY AND NEARBY COMPONENTS. THE TOW OPERATORS AND SERVICE WRITERS HAVE INDICATED THAT THIS IS A COMMON FAILURE OF THIS BATTERY, YET THE DEALER MENTIONED ABOVE HAS BEEN ARROGANTLY UNRESPONSIVE TO THIS KNOWN MANUFACTURING DEFECT.*AK

CANNOT REMOVE KEY FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH. HAD TAKEN VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP, AND MECHANIC REPLACED IGNITION AND GEAR BOX. PROBLEM HAS REAPPEARED. *AK
IGNITION SWITCH: GAUGES WENT TO ZERO, ALL IDIOT LIGHTS CAME ON, CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PULLING INTO TRAFFIC ON BUSY HIGHWAY, NARROWLY ESCAPED ACCIDENT WHEN GAUGES CAME BACK ON, IDIOT LIGHTS WENT OUT, AND ENGINE ACCELERATED NORMALLY. DID THIS AGAIN IN OUR DRIVEWAY TWICE THE NEXT WEEK. TOOK TO DEALER, MACK BROWN INC., IN BOONE, NC, NOT THE SELLING DEALER, CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY AT THE TIME. THEY KEPT IT SEVERAL DAYS AND CALLED TO SAY IT WAS FIXED. WHEN WENT TO PICK UP VEHICLE, I ASKED WHAT THEY HAD REPLACED, AND THEY ADMITTED THEY HAD DONE NOTHING, AND SAID THE DIAGNOSIS COMPUTER SHOWED SO MANY POTENTIAL PROBLEMS THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO REPLACE FIRST. I TOLD THEM TO KEEP IT UNTIL IT WAS FIXED, THAT I WASN'T PUTTING MY KIDS IN IT UNTIL IT WAS FIXED, AND GOT IN MY OLDER AND HIGHER MILEAGE MERCEDES WHICH HAS NEVER HAD A SINGLE PROBLEM, AND LEFT. THEY KEPT IT A COUPLE MORE DAYS AND DECIDED TO REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH, WHICH THEY SAID HAD CAUSED SIMILAR SYMPTOMS IN MANY FULL SIZE GM PICKUPS THEY HAD SEEN, BUT THEY HAD NEVER SEEN A JIMMY WITH THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID THE IGNITION SWITCH IN BOTH MODELS WAS THE SAME PART, THOUGH. THE CAR HAS NEVER HAD THE PROBLEM SINCE. UNRELATED BRAKE PROBLEM, BRAKE PEDAL WOULD SUDDENLY BE HARD, AS IF WITH NO POWER ASSIST. BACK TO MACK BROWN, INC., WHO DIAGNOSED IT AS A CLOGGED PCV VALVE. PROBLEM HAS NOT RECURRED. ALSO, FOR A YEAR THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WILL NOT HOLD THE VEHICLE ON EVEN THE SLIGHTEST INCLINE, DESPITE MACK BROWN, INC. AND TWO INDEPENDENT GARAGES ADJUSTING IT ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS.*AK

TRUCK WOULD NOT RUN AT FULL POWER DUE TO THE IGNITION SWITCH LIGHTS WOULD ALSO FAIL ON THE DASH . KEY WOULD ALSO GET STUCK IN THE IGNITION DO TO A PROBLEM WITH THE IGNITION . THE EXHAUST PROBLEM WAS THE BAFFELS WERE BUSTED INSIDE THE MUFFLER . WINDSHIELD HAD A VOID BETWEEN THE UPPER FRAME AND THE WINDSHIELD CAUSING IT TO LEAK. BELT TENSIONER BROKE DURING A START UP . AIR CONDITIONER COMPRESSOR WENT OUT DURING MY TRAVEL HOME FROM WORK.AK

THE CAR WHILE DRIVING AT A HIGH SPEED, LOST POWER, THE TRANSMISSION DROPPED INTO LOW GEAR, AND WOULD ONLY PROCEED AT A SLOW SPEED, THIS HAPPENED MORE THAN ONCE, THE SERVICE ENGINE MALFUNCTION LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON.I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THEY COULD NOT DETECT THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM OCCURED NEAR, FOR THE THIRD TIME, NEAR CORAL SPRINGS GMC AND I TOOK THE CAR INTO THEM IMMEDIATELY AND THEY CAME UP WITH TRANSMISSIONS CODES ON THE COMPUTER. I WAS TOLD TO TAKE THE CAR BACK TO KING SINCE THE OTHER DEALER DID NOT HAVE A TRANMISSION MECHANIC. KING WAS CONTACTED AND I WAS TOLD TO BRING THE CAR IN LATER , THE ENGINE MALFUNCTION LIGHT WENT OFF AND IT DROVE NORMALLY. THE DAY I BROUGHT THE CAR TO KING IT OCCURED AGAIN, AND THIS TIME THE SYMPTOMS WERE THE SAME, BUT THE INSTRUMENT ALSO WENT DEAD. KING REPORTED TO ME THAT THE PROBLEM WAS NOT THE TRANSMISSION BUT THE IGNITION SWITCH WHICH CAUSED THE COMPUTER TO LOOSE POWER, CREATING THE TRANSMISSION TO DOWNSHIFT AND, THE CAR TO LOOSE ENGINE POWER, AND THE INSTRUMENTS TO FAIL. AT HIGH SPEED THIS CREATES SOME CONCERN AS YOU CAN IMAGINE. THEY INDICATED IT HAS HAPPEN ON OTHER VECHILES. I CONTACTED GENERAL MOTORS SINCE I CONSIDERED IT A SAFETY PROBLEM. I FEEL OWNERS AND OTHER DEALERS SHOULD BE NOTIFIED, SINCE APPARENTLY IT IS NOT EASILY RECOGNIZED. THANK YOU.
