Early October my passenger side airbag deployed and I was sitting in the drivers seat and had just put the key into the key hole but did not turn the key to start the vehicle. 3 weeks later I was going into the passenger side of the vehicle and the key was in my pocket and the drivers side airbag deployed. Both times the vehicle was not started and the airbags deployed I called GMC and they had the vehicle towed to a dealer to investigate why the airbags deployed. They said it was a sensor that was corroded and that’s why the airbags deployed. I asked GMC, why didn’t the sensor left the driver know that it was going bad, just like it notifies the driver if you have low tire pressure or needs an oil change. I had no notifications that the airbags were going to deploy. I’m so grateful that no one was driving the vehicle when they deployed. GMC said the vehicle is not safe to drive so they had it towed from my house to the dealership and then back to my house however they said they are not taking responsibility for the deployment and said it’s my responsibility to get the airbags fixed. I told GMC that I was filing a complaint with you all. Thank you for looking into this matter.
General Published an article about the Takata Airbag recall stating that the dashboard would be inspected prior to doing the recall work and if already cracked or damaged the dashboard would not be replaced. My dash board is like new with no damage or cracks. The dealer told me (contrary to this article) that if their service men damaged my dashboard while doing the recall replacement I would be responsible for any replacement even if my dashboard is in perfect condition prior to the work. I find this unacceptable and will not have my airbag replaced under these conditions. The dealer/GM should be responsible for any damage they cause during the repair.
The contact's father owns a 2009 GMC Sierra. The contact stated that while his father was making a left turn at 20 MPH, another vehicle from the opposite direction ran the red light and struck the contact's father's driver's side front end. The TPMS warning light was illuminated. None of the air bags deployed upon impact. The contact's father suffered rib, pelvis, and spine fractures and was transported to the hospital by ambulance. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard but was not yet inspected or deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. Received a air bag recall notice . I scheduled a appointment with Hall Buick GMC in Tyler Texas 10-18-21 at 11:00 am . We showed up to service Dept. The young guy checking us in told us that 92% of the time they will crack the dash when getting it removed to do the the air bag recall work and the dealer is not responsible for any damage. I told him to get his manger so he did. We talked to service manger John Mackey he told use the same thing that the dealer is not responsible for any damage done to the dash like cracks or breakage while doing air bag recall work. I told him as you can see this truck has been garage kept since new and not in the sun. He said I can see that . I told him per the paper work I received if not fixed it may cause serious injury or death to passengers .Who's going to pay for that. He said GM and Takata. Is there any one that can do the air bag recall work without damaging the dash.

There was no incident, yet. However, this recall was issued on February 5, 2021, today is July 6, 2021. My safety and the safety of passengers are at risk because there is no resolution from the manufacturer thus far, over five months. This recall also negatively affects the resell/trade-in value of my vehicle. Because of the active recall, dealers will not trade for my vehicle for a reasonable value. So, due to the manufacturer being unable to fix the problem in a timely manner, I am financially impacted.
HELLO, I WAS JUST AT MOSSY GMC IN NEW ORLEANS,LA., WHERE I WENT TO SEE ABOUT GETTING MY RECALLED AIRBAG ORDERED AND REPLACED. THE SERVICE REP TOLD ME THAT WHEN THEY CHANGE OUT THE AIRBAG, MOST OF THE TIME THE DASHBOARD CRACKS EVEN MORE, WHERE THEY WILLBE WORKING, BUT THEY WILL NOT REPLACE THE BROKEN DASHBOARD. I FEEL THAT THIS IS TOTALLY REDICULOUS! IF I DIDN'T HAVE THAT DAMAGE BEFORE GOING INTO A SERVICE CENTER, AND NOW I HAVE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE SERVICE CENTER, I SHOULD NOT BE HAVING TO PAY FOR A NEW DASHBOARD OUT OF MY OWN POCKET. I FEEL THAT A CRACKED DASHBOARD COULD COMPOUND THE SEVERITY OF A CAR CRASH, BEING SAID, IT COULD SHATTER INTO PIECES UPON AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND SEND SHARDS OF DASHBOARD FLYING AT BOTH THE DRIVER AND THEIR PASSENGERS. THE SHARDS, COULD ALSO LACERATE THE AIRBAGS AND RENDER THEM USELESS. PLEASE HELP ME OUT WITH THIS SITUATION.

LOCAL DEALER DOES NOT HAVE ANY INFORMATION, IS NOT ABLE TO GET PARTS, AND IS NOT WILLING TO DO SERVICE AS IT WILL NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AS ITS NOT IN GM'S SYSTEM. GM IS CONTINUING TO STALL AND THIS HAS BEEN A FOUR YEAR ORDEAL. THEY WERE GIVEN INFORMATION SUCH AS THE VIN NUMBER AND SAID BASICALLY THEY CONTACT HIM WHEN THEY MAKE THE PART AGAIN, HE HAS NOT BEEN CONTACTED SINCE 7/22/2019. I RECEIVED A NOTICE FROM TAKATA 3 YEARS AGO ABOUT A DEFECTIVE AIRBAG RECALL BUT NEVER RECEIVED ANY INFO ABOUT TAKING IT IN TO HAVE IT REPLACED.ALSO, ABOUT THE SAME TIME AS I RECEIVED THE RECALL NOTICE MY SERVICE AIRBAG SOON LIGHT CAME ON AND IS STILL ON WHICH WILL MOST LIKELY PREVENT ME FROM TRADING IN OR SELLING THE TRUCK SHOULD I DECIDE TO DO SO.I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE PROBLEM SOLVED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THE VEHICLE CONTAINS TAKATA AIRBAGS THAT AN OPEN RECALL WAS STARTED 3 YEARS AGO FOR BUT A DECISION HAS NEVER BEEN MADE. THE DASH HAS NOW CRACKED NEAR THE AIRBAGS. IF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOY THEY COULD CAUSE SHRAPNEL FROM THE DASH TO BE PUT INTO THE CABIN. THERE IS AN OPEN LAWSUIT IN THE US AND CANADA WITH GM IN REGARDS TO THE DASH. THE VEHICLE IS ALSO DISPLAYING INTERMITTENT AIRBAG SERVICE ERROR MESSAGES. GM WILL NOT DIAGNOSE THE AIRBAG ISSUE FOR FREE AND WANT'S ANYWHERE FROM $150-$250 SIMPLY TO READ THE CODE PLUS WHATEVER THE REPAIR WOULD COST. GM ALSO WANTS $1500-$2000 TO REPLACE THE DASH. GM HAS DEEMED THIS VEHICLE "SAFE" BUT WILL NOT STAND BEHIND THAT "SAFE" DESIGNATION BY DIAGNOSING THE AIRBAG ISSUE FOR FREE. THE AIRBAG SERVICE LIGHT STARTED OFF VERY INFREQUENTLY AND HAS STARTED TO BECOME MORE FREQUENT. I HAVE ALSO BEEN CUT BY THE DASH ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, WHICH PRESENTS A HUGE SAFETY HAZARD. TAKATA RECALL I WAS NOTIFIED IN JULY OF 2016 BY GMC OF A POSSIBLE ISSUE WITH TAKATA AIRBAGS. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO CURRENT SOLUTION AND TO WAIT. I WAITED ONE YEAR (2017) AND CALLED AGAIN AND WAS TOLD NOTHING HAS CHANGED. I DID THAT AGAIN IN 2018 AS WELL AND WAS TOLD THERE WERE NO UPDATES. AROUND THE TIME OF MY SECOND CALL IN 2018, I STARTED GETTING AIRBAG WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGE FROM THE VEHICLE. I CONTACTED GM CORPORATE IN REGARDS TO THE ISSUE ASSUMING IT HAS TO DO WITH THE RECALL. I WAS TOLD BY GM CORPORATE THAT IN NO WAY WOULD THEY BE WILLING OR ABLE TO ASSIST OR PAY FOR ANY OF THE COST OF GETTING THIS RESOLVED AND THAT I WOULD BE REQUIRED TO EVERYTHING MYSELF. I MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET REIMBURSED IF THE RECALL FINALLY WENT THROUGH, BUT IF THE RECALL WENT THROUGH AFTER I SOLD THE VEHICLE THEY WOULD NOT REIMBURSE ME. I CONTACTED A LOCAL DEALERSHIP THAT WAS NOT WILLING TO HELP WITH COSTS EITHER AND WAS TOLD IT WOULD PROBABLY BE $300 TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM PLUS COSTS OF REPAIR. I'VE ALSO ATTEMPTED TO SELL THE VEHICLE BUT HAVE HAD BUYERS BACK OUT DUE TO THE OPEN RECALL OR OFFERED ME BELOW MARKET VALUE FOR THE TRUCK BECAUSE OF THE RECALL. THEREBY CAUSING AS OF RIGHT NOW "PERMANENT DIMINISHED VALUE" I PERSONALLY FEEL LIKE GM IS DRAGGING THEIR FEET KNOWING THAT IF THEY CAN WAIT LONG ENOUGH THE NUMBER OF VEHICLES WILL DROP OFF THE ROADS CAUSING THE REPAIRS TO BE CHEAPER.

SOME REPORTS ARE AT 80% OF THE DASHES CRACK IN THIS AREA. WE ARE AT 100%. MY WIFE'S 2009 CHEVY TAHOE IS CRACKED IN THE EXACT SAME PLACE. IN HER CASE, THE AIRBAG MECHANISM IS POPPING OUT OF THE DASH. SHOULD IT NEED TO DEPLOY, IT CANNOT AS DESIGNED. BOTH VEHICLES HAVE BEEN PROPERLY MAINTAINED AND NO CHEMICAL USED ON THE DASH. IN THE CASE OF THE GMC SIERRA, IT ONLY HAS 66K MILES ON IT AND HAS NEVER BEEN OFF ROAD. DEALER AND GM HAVE REFUSED TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE. REPAIR COST 1,200. THIS CAUSES EXCESSIVE RATTLING AND CONTINTED CRACKING. NOT ONLY IS THIS A HUGE SAFTEY HAZARD, IT IS FLAT OUT FACTORY DEFECTIVE MATERIALS THAT WERE USED IN THE MAKING OF THE DASHES ON THESE MODEL TRUCKS. MY REASONABLE DOUBT IS THAT IT CRACKED DUE TO BEING MADE OF LOW QUALITY MATERIAL. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO MY LOCAL GMC DEALERSHIP,SAME PLACE WHERE I ALWAYS TAKE MY TRUCK FOR ANYTHING CONCERNING MY TRUCK. WHEN I BROUGHT MY TRUCK AND SHOWED A SERVICE DEPT. EMPLOYEE, I WAS TOLD THAT NEITHER MY REGULAR,NOR MY EXTENDED VEHICLE WARRANTY COVERED THE DAMAGE,AND IF I WANTED IT REPLACED I WOULD NEED TO PAY ~$250!!! I WAS STUNNED AND APPALLED THAT I WOULD NEED TO PAY TO REPLACE SOMETHING THAT WAS CLEARLY A LOW QUALITY PRODUCT,SOMETHING I ALREADY PAID FOR WHEN I BOUGHT THE TRUCK BRAND NEW. "JUST DRIVE THE TRUCK" ON DECEMBER 11 THE 2009 STRUCK A TELEPHONE POLE BREAKING THE POLE AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY NEITHER DID ON STAR RESPOND.
