Truck has 8L90 transmission, has recently started shuddering at speeds from 65-75 and higher, I am experiencing issues with occasional hard shifts from 1st to 2nd gear, and 2 days ago experienced a very hard shift around 30-40mph when it slammed it made the tires chirp. 85k miles.

My transmission jerks randomly. It's done it since it's been brand new. When it does it, it is usually when it deaccellerates. I don't know if it's dangerous but I was hoping they had a fix for it by now.

Paint bubbling on roof. When turning on key, the radio makes a loud buzzing sound. On 11/16/2024, when leaving a traffic light, the truck began surging and shuddering. Tachometer was revving up and down like the transmission was slipping with loss of power while trying to take off and accelerate. While attempting to return home, loud booming noise was coming in from under floorboard. I was unsure if I would make it home before the transmission totally failed. People were passing around me because I was unable to acceleration fast enough because of the shuddering and loss of power. No previous signs of any powertrain issues or failures before. It happened for the 1st time today, and my truck is no longer safe to drive. GM has known about this transmission issue for years on several different models and has failed to broadly rectify the mechanical problem on all affected vehicles. Instead, GM has allowed the vehicle owners to continue to drive a vehicle with a known problem while it waited for a failure. This put me and my family at risk because I am driving around in a vehicle with a known transmission problem not knowing when it would fail or where I could be located when it failed. GM needs to pay for all repairs on all vehicles with this transmission failure because GM has known about this problem for years before someone gets hurt or killed. GM knew about the shuddering problem from the beginning, and they fixed the problem by tuning the transmission which then caused the total transmission failures over time which vehicles owners are not dealing with. Metal shavings are being located in the pan when inspected. GM should be held responsible for the cost of these transmission repairs. I would have never purchased the GMC Sierra 1500 if I have known GM was installing defective transmissions in new vehicles. That is shady, reckless, and unsafe. GM, pay to fix these problems.

The vehicle has been in the dealership from where it was bought numerous of times for the same problem. Transmission shifts very hard from one to two and Has lots of slippage. Dealer recommended a transmission flush and it did not fix the problem. They would keep telling me that the transmission is normal for slipping and slamming hard while changing gears. I’ve been to multiple shops and nobody seems to know how to give me a correct answer or guide me on how to fix my problem.

It is now causing a fluttering of the RPMs, especially when the vehicle heats up after running for several minutes. It is severely impacting my fuel economy as well as my general safety when operation my truck. This is a known problem with this type of transmission but so far there has been no recall issued, only a class action lawsuit that I am having a hard time joining. It is going to cost me over $8000 for a new transmission and I don't really know where to turn at this point or what to do! Please make GM issue a recall for this known transmission problem that they put in millions of vehicles, all having similar problems as my own! Thank you!

The transmission overheated due to a poorly manufactured torque converter which caused my truck to come to a sudden stop on the interstate nearly being struck by several semi tractor trailers leaving my family and I in a dangerous situation. Upon research the torque converter and the thermal bypass valve fail causing the transmission to overheat with no warning whatsoever. It massively blew smoke out of the tailpipe blocking all lanes of traffic, completely unable to see that I'm broke down and nearly caused several accidents. Police was not notified since no accident occurred. The transmission preformed as its supposed to. No hard shifts or slipping between gears. This needs to be addressed by the NHTSA and GM as it's a huge safety issue. With no warning light indicating the transmission is reaching critical heat levels and shutting down poses a risk in the event you're towing a trailer/camper (As I was). Or even worse happening to those who live where they drive up and down steep mountain grades.

The electrical system keeps throwing a code for short to ground as well as low voltage codes. The voltage gauge on the dash shows either over charging or under charging. The in dash radio and screen shut off and turns back on by itself while driving down the road. Occasionally while backing up or pulling forward the truck completely stalls. The transmission was subject to the shudder issue, we took it to King Cadillac in Lake City, SC for the transmission flush. After the flush we have not felt the shudder, but instead Occasionally when pulling off from a dead stop, or while crossing the very busy highway my house is on the truck looses momentum almost as if the transmission is failing to engage at all, and all of the sudden about 15 seconds later it engages and accelerates at a rapid rate. The steering is extremely loose in the tires, however the steering wheel engages after about 3/4 of an inch. I have taken it to said King Cadillac multiple times and they maintain that the steering is 100%. Although I can not let go of the steering wheel and continue straight for any length of time. I am constantly having to adjust the steering to match the pull of the vehicle to avoid changing lanes or running of the road. After 60mph the tire shake is horrible, after 70mph it is hard to keep the truck in its lane.

When in park and I shift the transmission into Reverse, the force engaging the gear bangs and shakes the vehicle. The transmission is not regulating the power. The vehicle is available for inspection. I took the vehicle in to the dealer service and they were able to reproduce it. They claim that there is a bulletin from GM motors and this is considered normal. The bang is hard and shakes the vehicle, definitely not normal. It started after 50k miles and the truck has 62k miles now. No one else inspected the vehicle and no warnings are indicated by the vehicle.

The torque converter jerks the truck and causes vibration. This does jerk the vehicle unsafely at times of stop lights. As I know this was a lawsuit at one point with GMC itself. It does nothing but get worse with pulling and jumping the truck going down the road.

I DROVE UP TO A YIELD SIGN, WHEN ON COMING TRAFFIC WAS CLEAR I STEP ON THE GAS THEN I HEARD MY ENGINE KNOCKING I TRIED TO GO BUT I ONLY COULD GET UP TO 30 MPH I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY DIAGNOSE IT AND SAID THAT THE NUMBER 7 CYLINDER HAD MISFIRED I HAD A MANCHANIC TO REPAIR IT AND IT COST ME $4200.00.

Torque converter and pump assembly failed at 66k miles 2016 GMC Sierra. Currently being repaired by the dealership. They first quoted me $4200 to replace but was able to talk them down to $3100.

At low/idle speeds the brake pedal becomes hard and will not stop. At speeds between 35-75mph the engine/transmission has a vibration about every 10seconds and the transmission shifts hard and/or rough at times when first taking off.

Just purchased this used vehicle in December 2022 with high miles (202000) with a dealers extended warranty. Problem has happened twice in 2 weeks. While backing up slowly and turning my wheel the vehicle stalled and Service Stabilitrak came across the dash as it died. Then upon restarting it told me to roll drivers window down and up and the memory seat function cleared as did my clock. Like it had a battery replacement and reset to factory. Took into a GMC service shop where they found code P0700 and P0711. They were able to replicate my concern. Telling me to replace the transmission harnesses and that it is not covered under my extended warranty for powertrain. Going to cost me $1500 in repairs. After extensive research I see this is a common problem yet no recall has been issued for my 2016 GMC Sierra crew cab. Very frustrating!!

Just purchased this used vehicle in December 2022 with high miles (202000) with a dealers extended warranty. Problem has happened twice in 2 weeks. While backing up slowly and turning my wheel the vehicle stalled and Service Stabilitrak came across the dash as it died. Then upon restarting it told me to roll drivers window down and up and the memory seat function cleared as did my clock. Like it had a battery replacement and reset to factory. Took into a GMC service shop where they found code P0700 and P0711. They were able to replicate my concern. Telling me to replace the transmission harnesses and that it is not covered under my extended warranty for powertrain. Going to cost me $1500 in repairs. After extensive research I see this is a common problem yet no recall has been issued for my 2016 GMC Sierra crew cab. Very frustrating!!

Was in a parking lot, moving just 2mph and had to literally mash down on the brake pedal - both forward and backward. Also, I put my truck in drive and has been making a noise in the transmission it seems and is a loud + lurches forward a bit. Additionally, I was traveling on vacation to Rockport, TX. I've made a appointment with the dealership here at 10:00 A.M. on 9 Dec 22, it's the earliest I can get my truck in. There was previously a brake issue covered under warranty & should be again!

After an unexpected battery failure, truck shuttered and jerked violently when coming to a stop. Replaced battery and was driving home when shuttering returned and dropped into neutral as if it was trying to find the gear. Pull over and was within inches of being rear ended as it rolled to a stop on shoulder. Forced to abandon vehicle while waiting for tow truck for safety. Concerns were raised to dealer around 50k miles when something seemed off, but was dismissed with the excuse that it was normal. Now with 120k, I have nothing more than a $45k yard ornament.

While driving the vehicle on first or second shift the vehicle has a delay to engage into shift making it a safety issue under normal conditions. If shift happens under rain will activate traction control almost making you lose control. Due to transmission not engaging correctly or delayed. This is the bulletin GMC has put out in response to my hard shift when I took into dealer for repair. It also gives the direction DO NOT Replace any parts for this condition. This issue also began at 40k miles and under warranty Dealer doesn’t want to fix. At 80k miles even no warranty dealer won’t fix due to no check engine light on. While putting truck into gear the transmission will not engage and will rev up and then take off or when coming to a stop the adaptive shift clunks very hard as if someone has hit you from behind. It will then surge forward without any warning. I have had it in to the dealer several times and they tell me it a know issue but they wont do anything about it.

When I was driving down the road the transmission just quit working. But I have had ongoing problems of the truck shifting hard and popping out of gear while driving. I have also went to get on the interstate and the truck pop out of gear while merging in traffic now I can’t go more than a mile or 2 miles and truck quits moving completely. The warranty on the original transmission was only 60,000 miles, however, the warranty on the remanufactured transmission is 3 year or 100,000 mile. What a joke. Do the right thing. Back your product.

When placing the truck in Drive, there is a very hard 'clunk' between first and second gear. Additionally, when driving, the truck shakes/shudders, mostly on the highway, but sometimes in town when driving between 25 and 70 m.p.h. The first instance was in March, 2019 whereby the dealer indicated this was normal operation for this transmission. As it seemed to get worse, I took it back and was told the transmission fluid was the wrong type and I had to pay to get it evacuated and changed out, even though this was an error on GMs part.

-Engine gas consumption states 21 MPG Highway, 17 MPG combined and 15 MPG City. -When I started using vehicle during the first weeks and months the best MPG I could geta at the highway was 18.5 MPG with top-tier gas. -Ever since I bought the vehicle, the gas MPG have gone down around 0.5 MPG. The vehicle feels that it has to use more gas in order to perform the level of task everyday. -The motor oil pump at times moves down from the 40 mark to the 20 mark when idle at traffic light and it starts moving, it temporarily goes to the 60 mark. At other times when idle it stays in the 30 mark. -The transmission is an 8 speed automatic. It has issues shifting 1st and 2nd gear, and at times 3rd gear as well. When driving at slow speeds like in a traffic jam, mall parking, do a u turn or when you slow down at the traffic light and then turns green and you start accelerating again it feels harsh on gearing up and down. -This vehicle has the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, it turns on even at slower speeds and you feel how the engine and transmission struggle to accelerate, go a gear up and push the vehicle with only 4 cylinders. Like in manual transmissions when you accelerate on a higher gear than the correct one, it takes forever to accelerate and properly change to 8 cylinder and establish the correct gear and ratio. -Even if all 8 cylinders on it it feels like if I am running on a smaller engine. -There was a fix done to the transmission for a valve, but the vehicle still runs the same as before. -There is a knocking noise starting to build in the engine. Best mileage I can get driving the same and gas is 13 MPG combined. -The recent safety recall for the breaks is actually making the breaking worse than before. -My vehicle is 2016 GMC Sierra All Terrain V8 5.3L 4WD Z82 with 36,500 miles on it and is doing all this and its getting worse little at a time.

Numerous "attempts" via TSBs and cover-ups by General Motors has failed to alleviate the common shifting, shuddering, rough shifting, LURCHING out of control along with appurtenant damage to adjacent components and structures within the vehicle itself. The vehicle manufacturer has attempted to forestall remedy at the expense of consumers. It has knowingly violated specific requirements for merchantability of said vehicle. IF SUCH KNOWLEDGE had been in my possession prior to purchase, I would NEVER have purchased the subject vehicle. Damage to torque converter components via polluted fluid and destructive particles caused by torque converter malfunction are situated throughout the entire structure of the named Transmission itself. Valve bodies. Gears. Filters, Fluids and tolerances have all been affected by the KNOWN DEFICIENCY by the stated manufacturer: General Motors Corporation. General Motors has shown neither the desire; nor will, to effect a meaningful and reliable solution to this problem.

Experienced error code of P0307 after vehicle backfired while on highway. Check engine light and stabilitrak lights immediately turned on and vehicle was shaking violently. Immediately took vehicle to an independent shop to have it looked at. After running diagnostics, pressure tests, and bore scope. It has been determined that piston in cylinder 7 is a complete loss and has a 0 pressure reading. From talking with shop owner he said he sees this issue quite often with GM vehicles due to DOD or AFM (active fuel management) that GM has on their engines. I'm at just shy of 67k miles, out of warranty, and needing to replace the engine.
