While driving down the highway the top part of the front of the grill flew off bounced over top of my vehicle and landed on the ground in the highway where the car behind me then ran it over and it blew into the median. I notified my local GMC dealer who said there is no active recall. Filed a complaint with GMC as this is a known issue and has already been recalled on the 2022 model. They reviewed and denied my claim at this time. It is a known manufacturer issue and creates a highway hazard if they continue to blow off and possibly hit or injure athers

Dec 30, 2025

Upper grill trim panel broke off while on highway and went flying over the truck while at highway speeds. Same issue as existing recall for the 2022 model.

Dec 23, 2025

The grille deflector suddenly detached from the truck and flew off into traffic. It narrowly missed the vehicle behind me and could have caused a serious accident or injury. There was no prior warning or impact that would explain the failure.

Nov 8, 2025

Upper grill molding trim/bezel flew off truck. Part was recovered and clips look to have broken off. Plastic clips look to be insufficient and will break over time. Active recall for 2022 model vehicles only , needs to be expanded to 2023 or possibly further out.

Oct 27, 2025

Molding between top of grill and hood came off while traveling on highway and struck windshield and broke it.

Oct 7, 2025

The top of front grille broke off at 70 mph, struck the windshield then the fixed antenna on top of the truck then into traffic behind me all doing 70+ MPH across a one mile long 2 lane bridge with no place to avoid the debris. The failed part endangered myself, my family and anyone traveling behind us. No one has seen the remnants of the event/ issue but The part was approximately 2ft long and 8 inches wide. The truck has a top piece that sits between the hood and the top of the grille. The part is gone but one can see the broken clips and flimsy plastic. The previous year model of the truck had a recall opened earlier this year for the same problem but not my truck. Multiple forums online report the same event as mine occurring on multiple model years.

Sep 10, 2025

The upper part of the grill detached on my 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 while going 65mph on the higway. The part is about 4 inches wide by 6 ft long. People behind me in traffic were swerving and dodging to avoid hitting it. GM knows about this problem (see safety recall #N242490120), but the scope of the affected vehicles is incorrect, so my truck is not included. There were no signs that the part was going to fail before hand.

Aug 30, 2025

Part of the grille of my 2023 GMC sierra AT4X flew off driving 75 miles per hour on the highway, i believe it has to do with the fasteners of the upper grille bezel.

Aug 12, 2025

While driving down the highway at moderate speed (60mph), the deflector, top of the grill broke off the truck, hit the windshield and the top of the truck (causing paint damage) and flew into traffic behind us. The incident put my family's safety and other drivers safety, at risk. I took the truck to a dealership immediately afterwards and they indicated the 2023 version is not under warranty, although a recall exists for previous years for this exact issue. There were no warning lights or messages received prior to the incident.

Aug 8, 2025

The upper portion of the front grille is loose and about to fall off. I know GMC has a recall on some trucks for this issue, however mine is not listed on this recall although I have the exact issue as the recalled trucks. It’s just a matter of time before this comes off driving 70 mph on the highway and could strike a vehicle behind me causing an accident. I noticed this being loose back in June 2025.

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Sierra. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the grill reflector above the grill detached and flew off into traffic. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed that the reflector needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact believed that the failure was associated with Manufacturer Recall Number: N242490120. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 43,000.

Mileage: 43,000

Tailgate opened several times without being prompted. Once while driving, two times while in park.

Jul 2, 2025

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving on the highway at 70 MPH, the front grill deflector detached and became airborne and struck the windshield, causing a crack. The grill deflector also struck the vehicle behind the contact; however, no damage was caused. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the deflector was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V060000 (STRUCTURE); as a possible cause for the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

Mileage: 70,000

The chrome grille deflector detached yesterday while on the interstate and landed in traffic behind me. GM recall number N242490120 does not cover my vehicle, but the same thing is happening to newer models. GM says they won't cover my vehicle under the recall. Can this recall be extended to newer models?

Jun 27, 2025

The tailgate opened without being released

Jun 13, 2025

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving 75 MPH on the interstate, the upper lip of the front grill detached and flew over the windshield into oncoming traffic. The driver was unable to retrieve the part. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact called the local dealer, who confirmed there was no recall coverage on the VIN for the failure. The dealer informed the contact that the part was on backorder. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact called another local dealer, Ross Downing Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram (500 Westin Oaks Dr, Hammond, LA 70403) and was referred to the manufacturer for assistance. The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not under recall and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

Mileage: 50,000

The chrome front grill deflector is loose and feels like it is going to fly off at any moment. There have not been any accident or collision with the vehicle for this to be my fault. I know all the 2022 GMC Sierras got recalled for this issue but dealership said my vehicle isn’t covered even though is the same issue

May 10, 2025

While driving down the interstate the upper grill piece broke off. The mounting tabs holding the piece broke.

May 4, 2025

Top piece of grill trim tabs broken and trim piece coming loose

Apr 29, 2025

Upper grille came off and fractured windshield while going down the highway it is a non serviceable part by GM which I believe is strategic seeing that they’ve had issues with earlier models of the the truck you have to buy an entire replacement grille for one issue that shouldn’t be happening was never able to locate part, I assume plastic grille clips dry rotted noticed the part lifted a bit before the entire part failed thought someone was trying to break into my truck . The wind while going down the highway caused them to fail, I’ve seen multiple GMC sierras with the same grille issue, I uploaded before and after pictures of how the truck looked before and after pictures .

The electronic tailgate randomly opens on it's own/fails and opens when it has not been pushed to open. The vehicle is available for inspection. The tailgate opens randomly and can be unknown that it is open. No warning of it at all. It has happened multiple times, the most recent being today 4/7/2025. I know that a recall has happened with other models for this exact same issue.

Mar 12, 2025

Tailgate opened/unlocked while parked during rain and light snow. The tonneau cover disguised that the tailgate was open (held it up just enough so it was not visable). The tailgate fell open while driving but went unnoticed. Several large and expensive items were lost out of the back of the truck which is used as a work truck for electrical services. This has happened twice on the roads. Now the tailgate is physically checked before driving to ensure it will not fall open. The incident was mentioned to the local GM dealer but we were told our model was not part of the recall. Our next call will be to GM directly to try to remedy the problem and hopefully recoup the items lost.

The tailgate on my truck opened while I was driving and I was unaware until I got to my destination. I had a utility trailer attached at the time and my tailgate was damaged from the jack on the trailer. I thought maybe I didn't latch the tailgate but it has been several days since I opened it. The following day the tailgate dropped two more times in less than a mile. I see there is a service bulletin and recall on most GM models but my truck is not included. I made a service appointment at my local dealership for them to inspect. The service writer already stated that my truck has no open recalls. I feel this is a safety issue first and second my truck has body damage. I use my truck as a truck and usually have stuff in the bed. My truck is completely stock with no modifications except a GMC bed cover that I purchased at the dealership. I'm hoping for the best on Monday 2/17/25 when I take my truck in to be inspected.

Nov 18, 2024

UNKNOWN. While I was driving down the interstate going 75MPH the top part of my grill flew off cracking my wondshield. I pulled over and pick it up and all the plastic welded factory clips broke off. This is a seriously dangerous issue that should be recalled and covered by GMC

Nov 18, 2024

My 2023 Sierra has an issue with the tailgate opening at any given time while in park. The dealer denied such issue until I noted a GM recall on the tailgate switch becoming contaminated with water. My issue is the amount of items, such as tools, half full plastic gas cans, shovel, etc, that I have lost out the rear of my vehicle endangering other motorists. My tailgate has become damaged, mostly paint damage, however I am more concerned about the public's safety and other GM trucks with the same growing issue. It was not until my dead battery (in a 2023 vehicle) caused me to discover the tailgate issue was connected to the short in the release switch. I also have a tonneau cover so I cannot see the tailgate and the truck gives no indication of the tailgate being down. This problem began within a few months after purchase.

Oct 8, 2024

Tailgate dropped while driving on the freeway. I was towing a utility trailer at the rime and the Tailgate hit the hitch area and scratched the Tailgate. It also dropped when not towing anything. I am leary to haul anything in the back of my truck

May 22, 2024

On May 5, 2024, while driving my 2023 GMC Sierra truck on HWY 40 near Holbrook, AZ, the tailgate lowered un-commanded twice while driving. I called GMC and they told me that my vin is not included in the recall. There is a recall for this exact problem however GMC said it is only for GMCC truck built at a specific plant. This happened twice and did significant damage to my tailgate.

May 2, 2024

I bought truck brand new one week later the tailgate opened while driving and hit the trailer and destroyed the tailgate. So I bought a brand New tailgate and repaired truck. Few months ago it happened again all my tools flew out into the highway almost caused a major accident and destroyed my saw and tools got thrown all over the road. Last week it opened again and destroyed the new tailgate I bought. The dealer is aware, gmc is aware and no parts to fix it or does anyone want to help me just let me drive a truck that is so unsafe. It's all over the internet this issue people are saying there tailgate opens while driving and gmc made a statement saying they are aware but not helping me. Sold me a truck for alot of money knowing it's a major dangerous defect that can cause major damage and serious injury on the road.

Apr 17, 2024

Driving and the tailgate opened/released on its own

Mar 4, 2024

I walked from my garage to the back of my truck to the driver door a drove away. At my destination the tailgate was open and my chainsaw was sitting there. Absolutely no way I could walk past my tailgate and not see the Stihl chainsaw looking at me and drive off without closing it first. I’ve owned the truck 1 week at this point.

Mar 3, 2024

On four different occasions my tailgate came down by itself. Once while driving and on three other occasions before I drove off.

Feb 14, 2024

2023 GMC 1500 Sierra Denali Ultimate tailgate opens without being commanded. This has happened approximately six times with damage to the tailgate in the last incident on 2/8/2024. There were not any warning lights. Safety is affected by having an open tailgate and cargo potentially leaving the vehicle. I have seen a recall pending for the same issue however seems to be limited to 2500 / 3500 series vehicles.

Dec 4, 2023

Tailgate opens by itself, a know issue by GM and Sierra drivers. Mine was damaged by opening and banging against my travel trailer. I have been talking with GM about this since September. Today a different department told me they require up to 30 days to investigate and if I pay for the repairs myself they will cancel the investigation. Objects flying out of my pickup bed could damage my vehicle, my camper and others on the road.

Sep 5, 2023

I have approximately 7K miles on my truck. The problem I am reporting is the omission of a warning light or some other method of warning if the tailgate which is electronically controlled by a button center near the console, central to and just above an area provided for storage of loose personal items, and also activated by a electronic key FOB which I keep in my pocket while driving. I have had at least 8 instances of the gate opening while driving. I expect others have had the same issue. It seems GM could add a dash light or tone if this happens while vehicle is in motion.

Jul 12, 2023

In past three weeks, the tailgate just drops down for no reason at all. Sometimes going down the highway, other times while I am parking vehicle the Tailgate Lowers itself automatically.????Is their a recall out for this, if not should be as you can lose portions of a load in the bed, right out in highway in traffic.....What action if any should I take at this point.
