I WAS DRIVING MY 2002 GMC SIERRA 2500 HD ON I95 WHEN TRAFFIC CAME TO A SUDDEN STOP. I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AT WHICH POINT THE ABS SYSTEM STARTED PULSING THE BRAKES, BUT THE BRAKE PEDAL SUDDENLY WENT TO THE FLOOR WITH NO FURTHER BRAKE RESPONSE. THANKFULLY, THE BRAKES SLOWED THE TRUCK ENOUGH PRIOR TO FAILURE TO PREVENT A COLLISION AT 65 MPH. I HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME AT ~5-10 MPH, CAUSING BUMPER DAMAGE TO MY TRUCK AND THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TO MY HORROR I HAD NO BRAKES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL AUTHORIZED GMC DEALER WHO HAS MAINTAINED THE TRUCK FOR ME. THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE BRAKE LINES CATASTROPHICALLY FAILED WHEN I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES. THE RUSTED BRAKE LINES BURST WHEN I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES. THEY INDICATED THAT ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES HAD TO BE REPLACED DO TO RUST THROUGHOUT. I CAN'T BELIEVE I HAVE BEEN DRIVING THIS TRUCK AROUND WITH A PENDING CATASTROPHIC BRAKE FAILURE WITHOUT WARNING FROM GM OR THE SERVICING DEALER. IF THE WORD IS NOT PUT OUT TO OWNERS OF AFFECTED GMC TRUCK, LIVES WILL BE LOST. THE GMC AND CHEVROLET 2500HD MODELS ARE NOTORIOUS FOR THIS MALADY, AND THE NTSB SHOULD DO THEIR JOB AND FORCE GM TO REPLACE AT NO CHARGE, THE VEHICLES BRAKE LINES. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 GMC SIERRA 2500. WHILE DRIVING IN REVERSE AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND IT DROPPED TO THE FLOOR. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO A REPAIR SHOP. THE MECHANIC STATED THE BRAKE LINES WERE CORRODED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. THERE WAS AN INVESTIGATION UNDER NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: PE10010 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:HYDRAULIC:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS) THAT MAY BE RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 175,000.

A BREAK LINE RUPTURED RESULTING IN LOSS OF FLUID AND DIMINISHED BREAKING. FORTUNATELY IT DID NOT RESULT IN A CATASTROPHIC LOSS IN BREAKING AT A CRITICAL TIME. THE RUPTURED LINE IS NEAR THE GAS TANK AND AT FIRST APPEARED TO BE A GAS LEAK. UPON INSPECTION ALL BREAK LINES ARE SUBSTANTIALLY RUSTED AND MUST BE REPLACED TO MAINTAIN SAFETY. ONE RUSTY LINE COULD INDICATE DAMAGE OR A SINGLE DEFECTIVE PART. 100% OF THE LINES BEING CORRODED TO AN UNSAFE LEVEL INDICATES SUBSTANDARD PARTS. THE REAR DISC BREAKS HAVE BEEN A CONSTANT PROBLEM WITH CORROSION OF SLIDING PARTS RESULTING IN CALIPERS NOT MOVING FREELY. THE SPONGY FEEL TO THE BREAKS WAS ATTRIBUTED TO STICKING OF THE REAR CALIPERS RATHER THAN A FLUID LEAK. ANNUAL LUBRICATION AND A TOTAL REPLACEMENT OF REAR BREAKS HAS BECOME NORMAL PRACTICE. THE POOR REAR BREAKS CAN LEAD ONE TO NOT NOTICE A SLOW LEAK OF BREAK FLUID UNTIL A TOTAL LOSS OF BREAKING ACTION. THE SLIGHT EXTRA COST FOR CORROSION RESISTANT BREAK PARTS COULD SAVE LIVES.

THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE ONTO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CONTACT NOTICED FLUID SQUIRTING OUT OF THE BRAKE LINE. THE CONTACT REFILLED THE MASTER CYLINDER WITH BRAKE FLUID AND DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIANS STATED THE FRONT AND REAR BRAKE LINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED BY THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE FRONT AND REAR BRAKE LINES WERE REPLACED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 37,108.

THREE BRAKE LINES RUPTURED SIMULTANEOUSLY CAUSING AN INABILITY TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CAUSE OF FAILURE WAS RELATED TO AN EXTENSIVE AMOUNT OF CORROSION ON ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES ON THE VEHICLE. COMPLETE REPLACE IS NECESSARY. THERE IS A REGIONAL RECALL ON THIS EXACT ISSUE BUT DOES NOT INCLUDE MY STATE. THERE ARE CONSIDERABLE REPORTS OF THIS FAILURE ACROSS THE COUNTRY BUT GM AND EVEN WORSE NHTSA FAILS TO FORCE A NATIONWIDE RECALL OF THIS POTENTIALITY DEADLY FAILURE. A SIMPLE SEARCH OF THE INTERNET WILL PROVE THIS DEFECT IS NOT CONSTRAINED TO ONLY THE RUST BELT STATES. MY '66 CHEVY STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL BRAKE LINES WITH NO SIGNS OF DEGRADATION HOWEVER MY '02 GMC REQUIRES THE REPLACEMENT OF ALL METAL LINES ON THE VEHICLE. I WAS PARKED IN A FRIENDS DRIVEWAY AND WAS ABOUT TO LEAVE WHEN I RELEASED THE PARKING BRAKE STEPPED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND PUT MY 2002 GMC 2500HD TRUCK INTO GEAR. I STARTED DRIVING DOWN THE STREET AND APPROACHED A STOP SIGN, WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES THE PEDAL WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR. I PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND OPENED THE HOOD WHEN I NOTICED BRAKE FLUID ALL OVER THE FRAME IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I FOUND ALL THE BRAKE LINES TO BE SEVERELY RUSTED AND AT LEAST ONE OF THEM RUPTURED. I WAS DRIVING WITH MY 9 MONTH OLD SON AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT AND THANK GOD NOBODY WAS COMING THE OTHER WAY DOWN THE ROAD. I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED TO MY HOME WHERE IT SITS AWAITING A TOTAL BRAKE LINE REPLACEMENT. THE UNDERNEATH OF THE TRUCK IS SO SEVERELY RUSTED I THINK GMC IS LIABLE AND SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *TR

I WAS INFORMED BY A FRIEND THAT HE THOUGHT GMC HAD A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. I RESEARCHED ON THE WEB AND FOUND A RECALL THAT DESCRIBED THIS SITUATION EXACTLY. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALER AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO OUTSTANDING RECALLS FOR MY VEHICLE. I THEN CONTACTED GMC DIRECTLY (FROM A PHONE NUMBER LISTED ON ONE OF THE WEB OBTAINED RECALL NOTICES) AND THEY RAN MY VIN AND SAID THAT MY TRUCK WAS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. I HAD TO DIVERT THE TRUCK AND TRAILER ONTO THE SHOULDER TO AVOID PLOWING INTO TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF ME. THIS APPEARS TO BE A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR TO MAKE, REPLACING THE FRONT WHEEL HUB ASSEMBLIES. CURRENTLY WE HAVE HAD TO DISCONNECT ONE OF THE ABS SENSORS TO KEEP THE ABS FROM ACTIVATING. *JB

THIS HAPPENED AT ANY TIME OF THE DAY, AND IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THIS HAPPENED WHEN APPLYING BRAKES AT ANY SPEED. THE CONTACT LOOKED UP INFORMATION FROM THE NHTSA WEBSITE AND FOUND THAT A RECALL 05V379000 HAD BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS VEHICLE. THE CONTACT SAID THAT HE TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS VEHICLE DID NOT FALL UNDER THE RECALL DUE TO VIN. *AK THE INNER TIE ROD HAD EXCESSIVE PLAY, THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL SEAL WAS LEAKING FROM THE VENT CAP, THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT BULB WAS INOPERATIVE. WHEN I PULLED INTO A LEFT TURN LANE AND TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKES THE PEDAL WENT NEARLY TO THE FLOOR AND I HAD NO BRAKES LUCKILY THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS ON THE ROAD OR IN THE INTERSECTION AT THE TIME SO I WENT ON THROUGH AND THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT, I WAS CAMPING AT THE TIME AND I GOT THE TRUCK BACK TO THE CAMPGROUND WHEN I BACKED THE TRUCK INTO THE CAMPSITE AND APPLIED THE BRAKES THEY STARTED WORKING NORMALLY, I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG THEY EVEN SAID THAT THEY HAVE HAD SEVERAL OTHER VEHICLES DO THE SAME THING AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THEM AND THAT THIS PROBLEM WAS NORMAL FOR THE VEHICLE. *NM

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE STALLED ON THREE OCCASIONS. ALL INCIDENTS OCCURRED DURING ACCELERATION WHILE TRAVELING 25 TO 35 MPH. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAULTY CRANKSHAFT SENSOR AND REPLACED IT. RECENTLY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAULTY TRANSMISSION SELECTOR POSITION SENSOR AND REPLACED IT. THE ABS ACTIVATED WHILE DRIVING ON DRY PAVEMENT. THE DEALER FOUND IT NECESSARY TO REPLACE BOTH FRONT ABS WHEEL SPEED SENSORS. *NM

I OWN A 3/4 TON TRUCK WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM BUT DUE TO THE FACT A REPAIR CONSISTS OF REPLACEMENT OF THE FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS THEY (GM) HAVE CHOSEN NOT TO INCLUDE 3/4 TON IN THIS RECALL. DT: THE CONTACT COMPLAINED ABOUT A BRAKE PROBLEM. REAR ROTORS RUSTED. DEALERSHIP SAID THAT THIS WAS NORMAL WEAR FOR THE REAR ROTORS. THE GM CUSTOMER SERVICE TOLD HIM TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALER, AND ALL THEY WOULD TELL HIM WAS THAT HE NEEDED TO REPLACE ROTORS AND REAR BRAKE PADS BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT TURN THEM OVER. *AK LEFT REAR AXLE SEAL LEAKED. THE SLIP YOKE AND REAR U-JOINT ON THE REAR DRIVESHAFT WERE REPLACED BECAUSE THEY WERE CAUSING A CHATTERING FEELING WHEN THE WHEEL WAS TURNED. *NM

RIGHT REAR BRAKE OF 2002 GMC SIVERADO 2500HD DOES NOT RELEASE COMPLETELY. RIM GETS HOT AND BRAKES SMOKE. GM DEALER ON SECOND SERVICE PROBLEM INSTALLED COVERS OVER THE BRAKES TO KEEP ROAD GRIM OUT. THIS DOES NOT SEEM TO FIX THE PROBLEM. JUST DROPPED OFF TRUCK FOR THE THIRD TIME WITH THE SAME ISSUES AND THEY CAN NOT FIND ANY PROBLEMS. RIM IS DESTROYED DUE TO HEAT AND BRAKE DUST. TRUCK HAS 11,000 MILES ON IT
