This Problem Across All Years
DURING COLD MORNINGS (WISCONSIN) I START MY TRUCK AND I HAVE NO POWER STEERING AND SOFT BRAKES. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE POWER STEERING RUNS THE BRAKE BOOST. ALSO, IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN THAT SAYS THAT THE POWER STEERING FLUID SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH LOW/COLD TEMP FLUID. MY CONCERN IS WHAT HAPPENS IF I LOSE POWER STEERING AND BRAKES WHILE I AM DRIVING.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 GMC SIERRA 2500. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH AND MAKING A LEFT TURN, THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY MALFUNCTIONED CAUSING THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CRASH INTO A FIRE HYDRANT. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND IT WAS UNKNOWN IF THERE WERE ANY INJURIES SUSTAINED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER BUT NO INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED REGARDING THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.

THEY LUBED AND GREASED THE SHAFT AT ONE POINT UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THE PROBLEM HAS RETURNED AND IS PERSISTENT IN BOTH OF OUR TRUCKS. BOTH OF OUR TRUCKS ARE '04 MODELS AND I HAVE LESS THAN 40K MILES ON MINE. IT FEELS LIKE THE STEERING WHEEL WILL COME UNATTACHED FROM THE LINKAGE. NOT A VERY SAFE PROBLEM TO HAVE. I HOPE SOMEONE WILL TAKE THESE COMPLAINTS SERIOUSLY. *JB

HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, WHO STATED THE SAME PUMP ACTIVATED THE POWER STEERING AND THE POWER ASSIST BRAKES;. HE REPLACED A VALVE ON THE PUMP. THE PROBLEM PERSISTED, AND HE RETURNED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST THAT PRODUCED NORMAL CODES. THERE WAS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN PIT3310 , AND THE CONTACT FELT THIS WAS RELATED TO THE ONGOING PROBLEM. NO FURTHER REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE. *AK
