WHILE DRIVING I HAD MY BRAKES FAIL, THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. IT WAS A RESULT OF A BROKEN STEEL BRAKE LINE UNDER THE DRIVERS SEAT. WHAT I FOUND WHEN I LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK WAS ALL THE LINES THAT WENT TO THE ABS UNIT WERE BADLY RUSTED. ONE OF MY COWORKERS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON HIS 2001 GMC SUBURBAN BUT HE CHUCKED IT UP TO ALL THE CAMPING TRIPS HE WENT ON WHERE HE LEFT HIS TRUCK PARKED OFF ROAD. MY TRUCK HOWEVER ONLY HAS 30,000 MILES AND IT HAS NEVER BEEN TAKEN OFF ROAD. I ALSO FLUSH THE BRAKE FLUID ONCE A YEAR AS PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE, SO THEY CAN'T CLAIM THEY RUSTED FROM THE INSIDE OUT. I DRIVE MY TRUCK EVERY DAY TO WORK ABOUT ONE MILE AWAY. MY DRIVEWAY IS PAVED AND THE PARKING LOT AT MY PLACE OF WORK IS ALSO PAVED. I DON'T PULL ANY HEAVY TRAILERS OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT WOULD CONTRIBUTE TO THE LINE FAILURE. I AM NOT PUTTING DOWN GM PRODUCTS BECAUSE ALL MY VEHICLES ARE GM VEHICLES INCLUDING TWO ANTIQUES. ONE A 1955 CHEVY WHICH HAD ORIGINAL BRAKE LINES UNTIL I DID A DISC BRAKE CONVERSION SEVERAL YEARS BACK. THE OTHER A 1970 CHEVELLE WHICH IS CURRENTLY A RESTORATION PROJECT BUT THE LINE ARE STILL ORIGINAL. THERE IS OBVIOUS A PROBLEM WITH THE MATERIAL USED TO MAKE THESE LINES. I WAS RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM ONLINE AND IT APPEARS THAT THERE ARE TO MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. ALSO GM NO LONGER SELLS THE LINES WHICH MAKES IT A MUCH MORE TROUBLESOME REPAIR. I ALSO DON'T OWN A BOAT, JET SKI OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT WOULD REQUIRE ME TO PUT MY VEHICLE IN SALT WATER.

THE VIN WAS EXCLUDED FROM NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05V379000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK). THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE REPAIRS COULD COST SLIGHTLY LESS THAN $1,000. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE LESS THAN 175,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 GMC SIERRA C3. WHEN THE VEHICLE APPROACHES A STOP, THE ABS GRAB AND MAKE IT HARDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THIS FAILURE OCCURRED ONE YEAR EARLIER WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ALSO FAILED, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO FAIL INSPECTION. A LOCAL MECHANIC INFORMED HIM THAT THE WHEEL SENSORS POSSIBLY NEEDED TO BE CLEANED OR REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05V379000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK). THE REPAIRS WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $1,500. TRUCK IS SUBJECT TO A GMC REGIONAL RECALL (RECALL ID# 58438 ) BUT GMC HAS REFUSED TO FIX PROBLEM STATING THE TRUCK WAS NOT IN THE RECALL DATABASE. I HAVE A 2001 GMC SIERRA 3500. I HAVE THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE PROBLEM DESCRIBED IN NHTSA ID NUMBER 05V37900. THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ENGAGE AT SLOW SPEEDS. I HAVE CALLED GM ABOUT IT, E-MAILED THEM ABOUT IT, STAY IN TOUCH WITH THE DEALER AND EVERYONE SAYS MY VEHICLE IS NOT AFFECTED BY THE RECALL BUT IT IS SHOULD BE FOR SURE. MY FRIENDS WITH 1500'S AND 2500'S HAVE ALL HAD IT REPAIRED BUT I GOT NO NOTICE. EVERY PLACE I CHECK SAYS IT SHOULD BE ON THE RECALL LIST BUT NOT WHEN I USE THE VIN ON THE GM SITE. *JB

DT: THE CONTACT STATED THERE WAS RUST ON THE ABS SENSOR ON THE FRONT AXLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC, AND THEY TOOK THE FRONT HUBS OFF AND CLEANED OUT THE RUST. THE TWO ABS SENSORS WERE ALSO REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS WORKING PROPERLY AT THIS TIME. THERE WAS RECALL, 05V379000, AND THIS CONSUMER EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE. ACCORDING TO GENERAL MOTORS, THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO VIN. *AK THE ROTORS WERE REPLACD DUE TO RUST. UPDATED 11/29/05. *JB

BRAKE PEDAL WILL GO HARD AT LOW SPEED AND NOT BRAKE. MY DEALER SAID IT IS THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND HE CLEANED IT. GMC HAS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM ON THEIR SUVS AND SOME PICKUPS BUT NOT FOR MY TRUCK. *JB

SHORTLY AFTER BUYING THIS TRUCK, I WAS DOING LESS THAN 20 MPH SLOWING DOWN TO STOP AT A LIGHT. I HIT A SMALL DUMP THEN I HEARD THE ABS COME ON AND I ROLL RIGHT THROUGH THE RED LIGHT. THE DEALER TOLD ME IT MUST BE MY DRIVING. AFTER SEVERAL OTHER SIMILAR SITUATIONS, I HAD THE ABS DISCONECTED AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY OTHER FAILURES.

FAILURE OCCURS BELOW 15MPH WHILE DOING A NORMAL STOP ON BOTH WET AND DRY ROAD (WITH NO CONTAMINANTS ON THE ROAD TO AFFECT BRAKING). THIS HAS HAPPENED EIGHT TIMES IN THE 8500 MILES I HAVE DRIVEN THE VEHICLE, WITH THE EIGHTH TIME RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT. EVENT COURSE IS THAT I AM COMING TO A NORMAL STOP, AND WHILE MY FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE I PUSH SLIGHTLY MORE ON THE PEDAL IN AN INSTANCE WHERE A LITTLE MORE BRAKE IS NEEDED TO STOP BEFORE WHERE I HAD ORIGINALLY PLANNED. IMMEDIATELY THE ABS KICKS IN (I CAN HEAR A WHIRRING SOUND BUT THE BRAKES PEDAL DOES NOT FLUCTUATE), AND I LOOSE ABOUT 50% OF THE BRAKING POWER RIGHT WHEN I NEED MORE TO STOP SOONER. OBVIOUSLY THE VEHICLE KEEPS MOVING FORWARD PAST WHERE I NEED IT TO STOP. THIS VEHICLE IS OWNED BY SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND IS A MAINTENANCE VEHICLE. THE MAINTENANCE SHOP AND DEALER CLAIM THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE, AND I HAVE REFUSED TO DRIVE IT. REAR WHEEL BEARING SEALS HAVE BEEN REPLACED. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING OVER 40 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS TYPE OF RESPONSE FROM ANY OTHER VEHICLE I HAVE DRIVEN. / PLEASE NOTE ON YOUR WEB PAGE, I COULD NOT MAKE A SELECTION FOR ANYTHING BUT A 'PASSENGER VEHICLE'.
