TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 GMC SIERRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE PARKED ON AN INCLINE THE CONTACT ACTIVATED THE PARKING BRAKE AND NOTICED IT WOULD NOT ENGAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THERE WAS A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 05V161000 (PARKING BRAKE) THAT MAY BE RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000. UPDATED 12/14/12*LJ

PARKING BRAKE DOESN'T HOLD VEHICLE. ADJUSTER IS MAXED OUT AND GM CUSTOMER SERVICE STATES THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO SINCE IT'S OUT OF WARRANTY. TRUCK ONLY HAS 61,000 MILES. THE PARKING BRAKE HAS NEVER BEEN USED. I'M THE ORIGINAL OWNER. *TR

THE PARKING BRAKE LINERS HAVE BECOME WORN TO SUCH A POINT THAT THE PARKING BRAKE WILL NOT HOLD THE VEHICLE STATIONARY. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE LINERS TWICE TO RECEIVE A STATE INSPECTION. EACH LINER REPLACEMENT HAS COST ME $40/WHEEL FOR A TOTAL OF $160. I NEVER USE MY PARKING BRAKE, YET IT CONTINUES TO WEAR. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT AND SHOULD BE REPAIRED BY THE MANUFACTURER. *TR

2002 GMC EXTENDED CAB FAILED STATE INSPECTION TODAY DUE TO INEFFECTIVE PARKING BRAKES. THEY HAVE BEEN INEFFECTIVE FOR YEARS. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE BRAKES APART AND THE LEFT REAR SHOE WAS WORN OUT**CC THE CONSUMER STATED THE SHOE WAS NOT HELD IN PLACE VERY WELL. THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED WITH THE RIGHT REAR BUT THE BRAKE LINING MATERIAL WAS STILL PRESENT. *JB THE CONSUMER STATES THAT THE PARKING BRAKE WEARS PREMATURELY ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION JUST AS WELL AS THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATES THAT IN NORTH CARLOLINA PARKING BRAKE EFFECTIVENESS IS A PART OF ANNUAL SAFETY INSPECTION. TL*- THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SIERRA 1500 THAT HE PURCHASED IN DECEMBER 2001. SIX MONTHS AFTER THE DATE OF PURCHASE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE DID NOT WORK. HE TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER , AND THEY TOLD HIM THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THE TRUCK BECAUSE OF THE VIN HE GAVE THEM. HIS FRIEND HAS THE SAME TRUCK, BUT HIS VIN FELL UNDER THIS RECALL. ALSO CALLED THE MANUFACTURER, AND THEY INFORMED HIM THAT THIS VEHICLE DIDNOT FALL WITHIN THE RECALL FOR THE EMERGENCY BRAKE DUE TO TNE VIN. THE DEALER TOLD HIM THE BRAKES WERE WORN OUTAFTER DRIVING THE CAR OVER 10,000 MILES. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 130000 MILES.*AK UPDATED 02/22/07. *JB

I AM CONCERNED ABOUT MY PARKING BRAKE WEARING OUT PREMATURELY AGAIN AND POSSIBLY ROLLING AND COLLIDING WITH ANOTHER OBJECT. THE PARKING BRAKE SHOES WERE REPLACED WITH ONLY 38,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER SAID THEY WERE WORE DOWN TO METAL AND THAT IT WAS MY FAULT FOR NOT HAVING THE BRAKES TOTALLY DISASSEMBLED AND THEN ADJUSTED. *JB

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE PARKING BRAKE WILL NOT HOLD PROPERLY. THE FAILURE GRADUALLY BECAME MORE SEVERE, NOW THE PARKING BRAKE ONLY HOLDS ON SMALL INCLINES. UPON INSPECTION AT AN INSPECTION STATION IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE CLIP IN THE PARKING BRAKE. THE DEALER FOUND A SERVICE BULLETIN # 02-05-26-001 FOR THE PARKING BRAKE. ALTHOUGH THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM THE CONTACT ELECTED NOT TO HAVE THE REPAIRS COMPLETED. HAND BRAKE FAILURE! HAND BRAKE WAS NOTICED TO NOT BE FUNCTIONING AT 30K WARRANTY SERVICE. SERVICE DEPARTMENT REPLACED BRAKE SHOES. BRAKE ONLY FUNCTIONED FOR 3 MONTHS AND BEGAN TO FAIL AGAIN. I THEN REPLACED THE BRAKE SHOES AGAIN MYSELF SO THAT I COULD PASS INSPECTION AND HAVE AGAIN BEEN WORN OUT IN JUST A FEW MONTHS. I WAS THEN MADE AWARE OF TSB #02-05-26-002 WHICH EVENTUALLY BECAME TSB# 02-05-002A. IT SEEMS THAT GM IS AWARE THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THEIR RETAINER CLIP DESIGN AND HAVE DEVELOPED A REPLACEMENT, BUT I BELIEVE THAT THE COST SHOULD BE THEIRS AND NOT THE CONSUMERS. I HAVE PLACED NOTES IN FORUMS SO THAT OTHERS DO THE SAME. *JB

MY 2002 GMC SIERRA 1500 EXT CAB PICKUP FAILED SAFETY INSPECTION DUE TO THE PARKING BRAKE NOT HOLDING. IT HAS 66000 MILES ON IT. I RARELY USE THE BRAKE LIVING ON FLAT LAND. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ACCORDING TO THE INSPECTOR REQUIRING APPX. $180 TO REPAIR. GMC HAS A SERVICE ADVISORY TO REPLACE A PART THAT SHOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM BUT WHY DOES THE CONSUMER HAVE TO PAY FOR A FAILED SAFETY ITEM? *JB

DT: CONTACT STATED THE PARKING BRAKE BANDS DRAGGED ON THE HUB OF THE REAR WHEEL EVEN THOUGH THE PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT BEING USED. CONSUMER HEARD A GRINDING NOISE, AND WHEN HE TOOK THE CAR INTO THE SERVICE DEALERSHIP, THEY TOLD HIM THE HUBS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. GMC INVESTIGATED TRUCKS WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS BUT NOT WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. HAD TO REPLACE THE HUBS ON 7-25-05. HAD 53,000 MILES ON THIS VEHICLE AND BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW. CONSUMER FELT THIS WAS A DEFECT AND WOULD LIKE TO FILE A SAFETY COMPLAINT. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME HE HAD THIS PROBLEM. *AK *JB

I BROUGHT MY TRUCK TO MY DEALER BECAUSE THE PARKING BRAKE WOULD NOT HOLD. I HAD 30,000 MILES ON THE TRUCK AND HAD OWNED IT FOR 25 MONTHS. THE DEALER GAVE ME A RECEIPT SHOWING THEY HAD ADJUSTED THE BRAKE AND REPLACED THE CALIPERS & ROTORS. 12 MONTHS LATER I TESTED THE PARKING BRAKE AND IT WOULD NOT HOLD. I CALLED THE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY MADE A MISTAKE ON MY RECEIPT - THEY NEVER REPLACED ANY PARTS, THEY ONLY CLEANED THE PARKING BRAKE. I FOUND OUT THERE WAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN IN PLACE (02-05-26-001) WHEN I ORIGINALLY BROUGHT THE TRUCK IN UNDER WARRANTY BUT THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT REPAIR MY TRUCK ACCORDING TO THE TSB. THERE IS ALSO AN OPEN NHTSA INVESTIGATION (EA04011) ON THIS MATTER. I THINK THE DEALER SHOULD FIX THE PROBLEM AT THEIR COST. *AK

RECENTLY TOOK MY TRUCK IN FOR ROUTINE TIRE ROTATION AND ALIGNMENT AND I WAS TOLD THAT MY PARKING BRAKE WAS WORE OUT. I ONLY HAVE 55,000 MILES ON MY TRUCK AND I HAVE NEVER USED THE PARKING BRAKE. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS COMMON WEAR BY THE DEALER AND GMC CUSTOMER SERVICE WILL NOT DO ANYTHING EITHER. IF IT HAS TO WORK TO PASS INSPECTION THEN IT SHOULD BE A SAFTEY ISSUE. I WAS ALSO TOLD BY THE SERVICE TECH THAT IT IS VERY COMMON FOR THESES TRUCKS AND HE THINKS THE CABLE IS TOO SHORT AND THE BRAKE WEARS GOING DOWN THE ROAD. *AK
