Jul 6, 2022 Crash 93,622 mi

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra. The contact stated that while driving at 42 MPH, she was involved in a three-vehicle accident after a vehicle involved in another accident ricocheted and hit her vehicle. The driver's side air bag exploded but did not deploy. Black smoke was released from the steering wheel and the air bag fell on the contact's left leg. The driver seat belt retractor fell apart during the accident which sliced the top part of the contact's ear; in addition, the failure sent a part of the contact's earing into her ear canal. The driver of the vehicle that was originally hit in the accident died the next day in the hospital; another passenger in that same vehicle was critically injured. The contact was treated days later at a hospital for a severe burn to the left leg due to the airbag. Her leg remained infected despite the treatment received at the hospital. The contact's ear was not treated. A police report was filed. The contact's vehicle was initially towed to an independent mechanic and then to a friend's home. The contact's insurance had yet to make a decision on the repair for the vehicle. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V245000(Seat Belts) and 17V437000(Air Bags, Seat Belts) which she linked to her failure. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was 93,622.

WHILE SITTING PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY WITH THE CAR IN PARK AND THE ENGINE IDLING, THE SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS ON MY 2014 GMC SIERRA DEPLOYED FOR NO IDENTIFIABLE REASON. GM HAS PROVIDED PART OF THE CRASH DETECTION REPORT DATA TO ME. THE VEHICLE EVENT SEVERITY STATUS: ROLLOVER INDICATES "YES". THE CDR ALSO SHOWS THAT THE VEHICLE'S SPEED WAS ZERO AND THE ENGINE WAS AT IDLE (512 RPM). AS NOTED, THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED ON A LEVEL SURFACE AND THERE WAS NO MOVEMENT OF THE VEHICLE OTHER THAN ANY MOVEMENT OF THE PASSENGERS IN THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE DID NOT ROLL AS IS EVIDENCED BY THE FACT THAT THERE IS NO EXTERNAL DAMAGE.

MY SON AND I WERE DRIVING MY GMC SIERRA 2014 TO HIS FRIENDS HOUSE BEFORE WE CRASHED. MY SON WAS DRIVING AND HAS HIS LEARNER'S PERMIT, HOWEVER, HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR 4 MONTHS. AT A FORK IN THE ROAD I TOLD MY SON QUICKLY TO MAKE A RIGHT RATHER THAN LEFT AND WE CRASHED INTO AN IMPROPERLY GRATED WALL OF DIRT CAUSING THE TRUCK TO GO FROM 40 MPH TO 0 WITH MY SON HAVING HIS SEATBELT ON, BUT I DID NOT. NEITHER AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AND BOTH OF US SUSTAINED SERIOUS INJURIES. MY SON BROKE HIS NOSE AND I AM SUFFERING FROM A BROKEN NOSE, CONCUSSION AND A BURST VERTEBRAE. NEITHER AIRBAGS DEPLOYED WHICH COULD'VE MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE ON OUR INJURIES. *TR

I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT BEHIND 2 OTHER VEHICLES. A VEHICLE FROM BEHIND STRUCK ME AT APPX 40 MPH AND RAMMED ME INTO VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. THE CAB OF MY TRUCK FILLED WITH A WHITE. "SMOKE". I WAS TOLD BY BOTH FIREMEN AND WRECKER DRIVER AIRBAGS HAD ACTIVATED BUT NOT DEPLOYED. MY WIFE WAS WITH ME. BOTH OUR SEATBELTS LOCKED UP AS THEY SHOULD. CONCERN IS HAD THE AIRBAG DEPLOYED IT MIGHT HAVE HELPED WITH BACK AND SHOULDER INJURY. MAYBE WE WOULD NOT HAVE BOUNCED AROUND AS MUCH. I NOTIFIED GMC AND THEY MADE A CASE FILE BUT AFTER A WEEK STILL HAVE NOT CONTACTED ME. EVEN AFTER NUMEROUS VOICE MESSAGES LEFT. *TR
