2023 Gmc Yukon XL SLT 5.3 Liter V8 engine As i was crusing on hiway my engine gave up lost of power knocking noise and check engine light appeared on dash it was a very serious matter when you are on hiway and engine fails on you ive gotte the car diagnosed it had known issue like the rest of GM trucks and suv Lifter failure/camshaft/push rods complete engine had to be either replace or professional rebuilt. This vehicle brand new is almost $100k vehicle which shouldnt have had this issue under 2 years of ownership and paying out of my own pocket. I urge NHTSA to take this matter in to consideration and have the GM 5.3 liter V8 engine under recall just like they have with the 6.2 liter V8 engine they have the same problem with the lifters, camshaft, pushrod failure. Thank you

Classic Buick GMC (Classic Elite Buick GMC – Katy) Filed by: [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] Phone: [XXX] Email: [XXX] Date: November 23, 2025 Texas Attorney General – Consumer Protection Division RE: SUMMARY COMPLAINT – Vehicle Misrepresentation, Unauthorized Charges, Financing Fraud & Warranty Violations Dear Attorney General, I am filing this complaint against Classic Buick GMC (Classic Elite Buick GMC) located at [XXX] , for multiple violations of Texas consumer-protection laws during the sale and follow-up service of a vehicle I purchased in March 2024. Summary of Violations 1. Misrepresentation of Vehicle Model Year I was sold a 2023 GMC Yukon Denali that the dealership falsely represented as a brand-new 2024 model, including on the key-tag. This violates Texas Occupations Code §2301.351(a) and DTPA §17.46(b)(5), (7), (24). 2. Unauthorized Add-Ons & Hidden Charges The dealership added $8,000 in accessories and $26,000 in warranty products without my consent. This violates DTPA §17.46(b)(12). 3. Financing Fraud I was promised 1% financing, but the dealership charged a significantly higher rate at closing without disclosure. This violates the Truth in Lending Act (TILA). 4. Warranty Refusal & Pre-Existing Damage Although the vehicle had defects and mechanical issues at delivery, the dealership refused to repair them under warranty unless I paid. This violates the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. 5. Failure to Provide Required Documentation The dealership refused to provide complete purchase documents, violating Texas Administrative Code §215.142. 6. Pattern of Evasion I personally visited the dealership three times, yet management refused to correct any misconduct. 7. Unsafe Vehicle Retained at Dealership The Yukon remains at the dealership due to mechanical/electrical defects. I refused to pick it up because the vehicle is unsafe and not as represented. Engine failure at 38k miles No service lights on dash. GM says 4 months to get replacement motor with very little help on getting rental car

Nov 4, 2025

While traveling on the interstate my vehicle shuttered and lost power we went to a friend’s neighborhood and the vehicle stalled when we pulled in no lights had come on until then and a knock had started. With no where to pull over I finally got the vehicle started and drove it straight to our friends house and left in on the side of the street. I had to take there vehicle home and called ONSTAR to tow it to the dealership. I have to pay for the over mileage because I was out of town when it happened.

Nov 2, 2025

The vehicle has experienced numerous losses of power, it has nearly stalled during normal operation, there is a horrible knocking noise coming from the engine. I have had the vehicle into the dealership who state they are unable to recreate the issue, and since the vehicle has been turned off the recorder shows noting either. They have performed an inspection and changed the oil, but the vehicle still has the issue. It knocks and shudders like it's cold, it comes very close to stalling and then seems to recover, this has happend twice while making left hand turns, it has completly lost power even while depressing the gas, but again they indicate they can't recreate it, so there is nothing they can do. I am scared for my safety, and that of the child I drive daily. There have been several instances in the last few months.

Nov 2, 2025

The vehicle underwent a recall inspection on September 8, but on October 2, the vehicle still experienced a serious engine failure. The vehicle was undrivable, and the dealer inspected it and opened a TCA case. However, General Motors stated that it had passed the recall test and was not covered under special warranty, and asked me to pay $5,000 for vehicle repairs. I believe this is an engine malfunction related to the recall, and the manufacturer should replace the engine for me free of charge and refund my 5,000 .

On May 23, 2025, I purchased a 2023 GMC Yukon XL VIN: [XXX] from the GMC dealership.
At the time of sale, I specifically asked about the active GM engine recall. They assured me the vehicle had been inspected and was unaffected. On October 30, 2025, the engine catastrophically failed on a highway while my family — including my two small children — were in the vehicle. This created a dangerous emergency situation as I had to avoid high-speed traffic. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Driving and pulling up into my driveway when suddenly the message “push start button to start engine” comes on with an alert sound - I notice my gear is lighting up “N” and when I pushed the start button it sounded like my engine restarted. I remained in neutral and had to change it back to drive myself. The engine randomly cut off

Jul 30, 2025

I have had two incidents. The vehicle is hesitant. It’s spudders, it stalls. You can hear it in the engine at idle and especially at cold start.

My vehicle’s engine failed for the second time while driving on the road. The first time a few months ago while my wife was driving. The engine failed and brakes failed. Fortunately she was on a back road a coasted to a stop. Car was towed to dealership. They said there was no problem. Received recall letter about a month ago outlining this issue. Yesterday, [XXX], I was driving with my daughter and the car stopped again while driving. I was in traffic and narrowly missed an accident. Gwinnett county police came to the scene and towed the vehicle to the dealership. I am not sure if the female officer made a report. But she requested the tow truck because I was blocking traffic. We often drive on the highway for work commutes. This could have happened and anyone in my family could have been fatally injured. I would like GMC purchase this vehicle back or replace with a safer model comparable or better. The service department called me this morning from Jim Ellis GMC in Buford, Georgia 678-902-8677, 3600 Buford Drive 30519.I was told that there is no recall for my truck. He told me that there is a safety investigation for a recall. I told him I can bring the letter. He decline. I asked for a courtesy vehicle. He said no, he would have to make a report and it would be up to 48 hours. Once it’s reviewed , then I could go to enterprise car rental to pick up a car. Maybe. The first time Rick Hendrick GMC Duluth , Ga 470-822-3779, 3344 Commerce Ave, Duluth, ga had my truck for about 2 weeks. No fix. No courtesy vehicle or rental. Now I’m without my vehicle for unlimited time. The Jim Elis tech, did acknowledge that there is no fix for what is going on. The local GMC dealers are not making this easy or putting the safety of its customers as a priority. These trucks are NOT safe on the road. This truck cost nearly $100,000 and it is not safe to drive.GMC has a record of the 1st service incident and this latest just happened yesterday. GM issued a recall, N25249000 after hundreds if not thousands of complaints of catastrophic engine failure. My engine was impacted. It failed Sunday, [XXX]. I limped it to Mike Marroone dealership in Longmont, CO, on August 5th. That afternoon they confirmed my engine and various other components needed to be replaced. At this time GM was flooded with recalls and the whereabouts of all necessary parts were unknown and could not be tracked. It was so bad that the dealer could give no timeline as they had 5 vehicles waiting for engines. They also were replacing engines, and the replacement engine would fail immediately. Without notice, an engine and parts arrived after 3 painful weeks of sitting in the unknown. The vehicle was returned to me on August 23nd, 2024, 19 days after I dropped it off. During this time I was paying $977.50 for a car payment plus $130 for insurance per month. I had to pay this despite not having use of the vehicle for a recall that GM knew about but didn't do anything until it garnered national attention. The following is my response to the proposed warranty coverage for GM recall N25249400 and NHTSA recall 25V274: Based on the above information provided, I am requesting the 10 year warranty and 150,000 mile warranty be effective from the date the vehicle was returned to me on August 23rd, 2024. Additionally, I am requesting a check in the amount of $1,106.50 for payments directly associated with a vehicle that was not able to be used due to GM's failure. the coolant control valve failed, and now its been in the dealership for over a month. I have been reading online that this is not an isolated issue, and many people experience months of wait time getting the part because its apparently nationally backordered because of this problem.

All of a sudden while driving on [XXX] in PA, the vehicle made a loud click noise, started squealing and randomly slowing down as if we were slamming on the brakes, but it was all engine related. Then it was shaking vigorously while we were parked. We got towed to a local shop in the middle of nowhere, and they just called stating it could be a valve spring that broke and they’d have to take the valve cover off to determine it. Speed control became stuck and I had to hit my breaks to stop acceleration. Vehicle stopped shifting while driving down the road periodically. Warning collision lights and traction control lights randomly come on with nothing in front of vehicle. Yesterday vehicle would not start or even unlock. When I did get the vehicle to start by manually unlocking it and trying over and over it would not go forward or backward although the engine did rev up. All warning lights were on including traction control and check engine. It did randomly start moving but the “service steering column” light and check engine light are still on . The car periodically revs up while going down a hill when it needs to downshift instead. It has completely shut off driving down the road through town and stopped. I had to hurry and turn it back on as there were cars behind me. It’s a 2023 and I don’t feel safe driving it with my kids.

The contact called on behalf of her daughter who owns a 2023 GMC Yukon XL. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated that while her daughter was driving on a back road at 55 MPH, the vehicle lost automotive power. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact’s daughter pulled over and attempted to restart the vehicle; however, the vehicle failed to restart. The contact stated that a bystander pulled over and assisted with towing the vehicle to a local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that failure might be related to the recall; however, parts to repair the vehicle was not yet available. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

I was at a stop on my street needing to cross a busy one. I stepped on gas to quickly move forward and it stalled. Almost causing a wreck. I have taken it in to gm it had a recall and they said it was fixed and now there is another recall and it has been at least three months now that our dealer can not resolve this issue because they do not have parts to fix the issue. The vehicle seems to struggle moving forward and when its switching gears. It is still running but I feel like something is off. I have two small children with me and we are in this car all the time. I do not feel safe driving it anymore. What can I do about this?

Jun 11, 2025

Vehicle surged, lost all power while driving, switched to neutral and would not restart.

Jun 10, 2025

Vehicle was traveling on interstate and lost power/propulsion and automatically shifted to neutral. Grave danger for eminent death/injury as a result of possible accident.

I am reporting a serious engine failure in my 2023 GMC Yukon XL (5.3L Ecotec3 V8) at approximately 68,775 miles. The engine began to run rough with a loud chatter noise, and both the check engine light and traction control light activated. Diagnostic tests at the dealer (F.C. Kerbeck GMC) confirmed a P0300 random misfire code and revealed that the lifter on cylinder #5 had collapsed, causing damage to the camshaft lobe. The repair required removing the cylinder head and replacing the lifter, camshaft, pushrods, valves, and associated gaskets and seals. Although I was told this was covered as a ‘goodwill repair’ by GM, I was still charged $3,450 for miscellaneous charges. I find this highly concerning and question whether these charges are consistent with GM’s stated goodwill or warranty policies. In my opinion, a known lifter design flaw requiring such an extensive repair should not result in out-of-pocket costs for the vehicle owner. This failure resulted in a severe misfire and significant performance issues that I believe raise serious safety concerns, including the potential for sudden loss of power while driving. I am submitting this report to NHTSA to ensure this issue is documented and to request that it be included in any broader investigation into GM lifter system failures. Repair invoices are available upon request

I own a 2023 GMC Yukon Denali XL (VIN: [XXX] ) currently under active recall for the L87 6.2L engine. GM has no remedy available and has acknowledged a risk of complete engine failure and loss of propulsion, which could occur without warning. This is the primary vehicle I have for transporting my family of seven, including a toddler. I am significantly upside down on the loan, and the dealership cannot guarantee it is safe to drive. I am requesting that NHTSA escalate the urgency and hold the manufacturer accountable for timely resolution or replacement.” INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Major recall on Yukon with no remedy listed - unable to sell vehicle or trade in with open recall.

May 30, 2025

We were traveling eastbound on I 70 around 75mph. We received no prior indication that there was a problem. The display read engine oil hot, transmission shifted to neutral, and the entire vehicle shut down. We lost propulsion and were left coasting on a major highway with no power.

May 17, 2025

I’ve inserted the question and their answer: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Lifter valve number six failed causing it to shatter and send pieces of it throughout the engine along with other debris into the cylinders. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Vehicle had loud engine knock, pulsation of power, had to pull off on main highways due to loss of power over 400 miles away from home. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, engine was serviced by GM dealership in Baldwinsville, NY for over $8,500. Will attach copy of bill. Now is doing same thing, again. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? GM as stated above. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Check engine light flashed, traction control light came on.

I was driving on a highway with my [XXX] son and 2 dogs when without any warning the vehicle just stopped and completely went dead. I was unable to turn on the hazards so I called 911, the police came within minutes and surrounded the vehicle to keep us from being crashed into. The brakes failed to work, the hazard lights would not work, the doors would not open other than the driver door. The police had to help remove my child and 2 dogs from the vehicle through the driver door. The vehicle could not be put into neutral so the police had to tow the vehicle from the middle of the highway. The result could have been deadly. The vehicle was completely dead with absolutely no function. After the police towed it to the police tow facility it was then towed to the GMC dealership I purchased the vehicle from. The dealership is Jim Curly GMC in Keyport NJ. The dealership has had the vehicle since Saturday and is claiming to not know what is wrong with the vehicle. While driving at approximately 30 mph in moderate traffic on the interstate during a return leg of a 370-mile trip, my vehicle unexpectedly shifted into neutral and became unresponsive. The dashboard displayed the warning message: "condition not correct for shift," and despite repeated attempts to restart the engine, the vehicle would not engage. Although the electrical system remained active, I had no propulsion. Critically, the vehicle became immobilized in a **very dangerous curve on the interstate**, presenting an extreme safety risk to myself and others. The car could not be manually shifted into neutral for towing, prompting Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to declare the location unsafe. I was stranded there for over three hours, after dark, in a vulnerable and exposed position. During the forced tow process, two rear tires were destroyed and the two front tires sustained major damage. In the days leading up to this incident, the vehicle had also shown signs of malfunction, such as delayed acceleration from a stop and occasional lurching forward — symptoms consistent with the defect described in the recall.

Apr 30, 2025

I am formally requesting a complete refund for my vehicle. It has only 6,300 miles, and the remedy provided for the recall does not adequately address the issue. The recall explicitly indicates defects in the engine components (rods/cam shafts) that may lead to a loss of propulsion. Merely inspecting the vehicle and adding thicker oil does not resolve the underlying problem; it only postpones the inevitable expiration of my warranty. Currently, there are no warning lights illuminated, as the vehicle is not driven frequently. The recall raises significant concerns, and GM should be taking more substantial measures than simply applying thicker oil as a solution. This approach feels like a temporary fix rather than a genuine resolution. I have communicated with the dealership, and have been informed there is currently no solution available for this matter. They are awaiting further instructions on how to proceed. I request a more thorough investigation into this issue for an appropriate refund, and I also wish to have this matter documented for future reference.

My vehicle stalled while driving on a busy highway & I had no option but to pull over, which left me & my family in a very dangerous position. Had to remove my daughter's wheelchair onto a tow truck as the vehicle had no power to use the hoist for her powerchair. Again, on the side of a busy road! Towed the vehicle to a GM dealership, who stated there was catastrophic engine failure & the engine had to be replaced. Had no way to transport my daughter until I got a new engine since her hoist was stuck at the dealership. This was our original vehicle, until the sold me another one with the same defect (2024 Yukon for MORE money!). That vehicle was reported in Complaint 11657786.

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that upon taking the vehicle into the dealer for regular service, the dealer found that the engine oil level was extremely low, resulting in damages to the engine. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact was informed that the piston O-rings needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 22,000.

Crankshaft bearing failed, leading to engine failure at 65MPH on highway. No warning.

Apr 27, 2025

While driving without any warning the screen said press start. The vehicle shifted to neutral and lost all power while driving down a very busy road on the top of a hill going 55 mph. Once stopped we tried to turn the vehicle back on, vehicle would power on but wouldn’t start just click and screens flash

Apr 27, 2025

While driving on a busy highway, the engine stalled and could not be restarted. We were in the left lane and thankfully traffic was light and i was able to get to the shoulder. No warning and no check engine light before stall. After numerous attempts and about 15 minutes it did restart. A few miles later same issue and could not restart. We were 200 miles from home. Called GM and they sent a tow truck. Dealer had the car for almost a month and replaced the engine because they found metal in the oil and determined that the main bearings had spun. The concern is that the replacement engine is presumably a 2024 and the issue could happen again.

Apr 22, 2025

While driving on the freeway at about 70mph, the lights on the dash lit up and the message "Push Button to Start" showed up. At that point the vehicle started decreasing in speed. When the accelerator was depressed, nothing happened. Luckily the freeway was not crowded and the vehicle was able to coast the side of the road where it came to a stop. Pushing the start button did nothing except bring up the dash information. Engine would not start or even try to start. AAA was called and the car was towed to a dealership. The dealer has since determined that the engine is locked up. The oil had metal in it and an engine replacement will be needed. They have put in an order for a new engine. There were no warning lights or CELs of any kind. The engine just stopped working without any warning. The 6.2l engine on the GM line of SUVs and trucks seems to be known for doing this. If this were a busy time of day or there was more traffic it may not have been so easy to pull to the side of the road. It is only a matter of time before these engine issues result in an injury or worse, a fatality. The solution to replace a faulty engine with another engine that has not been redesigned or fixed is an unsafe and risky solution.

Apr 18, 2025

Multiple issues...I bought the vehicle in Oct. 2023 1. BRAND NEW.... First day I brought the vehicle home there was a whining sound coming from the transmission. The reaction carrier assembly had to be replaced along with all other components. The transmission had to be completely removed from the vehicle and repaired. 2. In May of 2024 I had to have the lifters replaced on one side of the motor. 3. Right now it's in the shop with a blown motor. Yes there's only about 43,000 miles on it and the motor is blown and has to be fully replaced.

Apr 12, 2025

While driving with my cruise control set to 75, my vehicle began losing speed and power for no apparent reason. I was able to fortunately pull over on the shoulder of the road when the engine turned off without pushing the stop button. At this point I put the vehicle in park and tried to restart the vehicle with no luck. It was at this time I contacted my husband and he was able to come load the vehicle on a trailer to tow to our GMC Dealership. This happened on January 28, 2025. There was 60,407 miles on the odometer. The dealership was able to tell us that the motor seized due to a bearing failure. I am glad that I was able to get over to the shoulder of the road and was not in the middle of road construction. This was a scary situation that could have been much worse.

Apr 11, 2025

Vehicle went to GM for recall repairs on 02/24/25 the morning after when I cranked my car it was dead. Jumped the car off then began hearing a "clicking noise" GM advised I replace my serpentine belt as they noticed it needed replacement when doing the recall repairs. 02/26/25 serpentine belt was replaced but car still seemed to have power issues when cranking. 02/27/25 car barely cranked then while driving down the highway I lost all power and power steering to the vehicle. There was no warning, no check engine lights etc. The screen went black then car shut off then the screen said "press start to restart." I was BARELY able to get the vehicle safely off the road with vehicles in front, behind, and in the other lanes. It could have caused a fatal accident. GMC still has my vehicle with NO UPDATE on replacement engine timeline.

Apr 10, 2025

Recently, while driving my 2023 GMC Yukon Denali XL Ultimate (with only 19,457 miles) on the expressway, my vehicle suddenly lost all power and steering at high speed—without any warning lights, noises, or alerts. One moment everything was normal, the next I was gliding in silence, completely powerless in a 6,000 lb vehicle surrounded by fast-moving traffic. I was nearly sideswiped multiple times as I tried desperately to avoid a potentially deadly accident. This failure wasn’t just mechanical—it was terrifying. And it could have cost me my life. What happened next only made things worse. GM Roadside Assistance left me stranded on the side of the road for nearly 4 hours. Multiple tow trucks were sent, but none had the right equipment because the vehicle could not be put into neutral due to the engine failure. I was left vulnerable, frustrated, and utterly unsupported while GM fumbled through their response.

Vehicle started making noise and idling rough 1-2days after receiving it back from oil change. It was absolutely fine and out of nowhere this happens. I’m great with cars and this is my 5th GMC Yukon and I bought this one at 0 mileage so I am very familiar with this car. There is absolutely no explainable reason my car is doing this I had it inspected and the dealer told me this has been happening lately to a lot of the gmc Yukons and I would need major engine repair for a brand new car!!! Over 20k in repairs and parts. I have 6 children and we have had to abandon the vehicle on Christmas Day to drive our old 2019 GMC Yukon which I think is starting to sound a lot like the 2023 under the hood! It’s roughly idling to. I’m afraid we might be taking the bus if I don’t pay 20k. I looked to see if there were recalls but found none. there is no way engine failure should just pop up after we spent tons of money keeping these cars in perfect shape and only being serviced at the dealership. This should be investigated and repair records pulled to find people who are not aware

Apr 1, 2025

Vehicle "Low Oil Warning" light appeared at approximately 3000 miles after an oil change. Checked the oil and it was nearly 3 quarts low. Without any visible leaks or loss of oil, I called local GMC service department and had them inspect. They found that 4 pistons and other components needed replaced due to failure. There was no signs or symptoms other than the warning light. The car has been in the shop for 3 weeks. I currently do not have my vehicle, but I was going to use this vehicle for a long road trip and I'm sure this would have been a catastrophic loss, and possibly a safety issue for my family traveling 1k miles at highway speeds.

Driving on highway with my [XXX] daughter in the car, screen all of a sudden flashed “press start” on the dashboard and the car died in highway at the off ramp exit. Had to call state police because we were blocking ramp and almost got hit multiple times. Could not get car to restart, state police towed off highway for $200 and AAA towed to dealer. Took over a week for dealer to claim GM owned up to engine failure. No rental car provided. Sold for a $37,000 loss a year and a half after purchase with only 27,000 mile on the vehicle. My daughter and I were coming and got off of the [XXX] on the [XXX] exit ramp to go home. When we were pulling up the vehicle suddenly showed the check engine light and the vehicle turned off. It would not go into neutral, it would not restart. I am being told there is no active recall on it; however, in researching, it appears that I am one of many cases of this exact scenario. Being stuck on a busy exit ramp is not safe and had this have happened in the road construction on [XXX] , this could have been a much different scenario even fatal. This vehicle is a 2023 with 40,355 miles on it. The Denali is currently at the dealership it was towed to, and I am waiting on the diagnostic. My wife was travelling down a two-lane road at 50mph when the engine suddenly shut off affecting steering. She was able to maneuver to the shoulder, but the vehicle would not restart. Could have been much worse. Had it towed to the dealer we purchased it from, and they informed us the engine had seized. There were no warning signs or dash lights indicating there may be an issue.

Mar 18, 2025

During a cross country road trip on [XXX] we experienced the dreaded 6.2 gm engine failure. As I was driving I lost all power going up a steep grade in the fast lane of a 4 lane interstate. There was no room to pull over to the left side so I had to very quickly cross 4 lanes of traffic without any power. I was able to get the yukon off the interstate as safely as possible. Once I placed the vehicle in park it shut off completely. I tried to restart it several times. Finally got a message on the dash saying engine oil cooler was hot or oil was overheated. Called gmc and got a tow to nearest dealership. I rented a vehicle on my own dime and drove that back to north dakota where we live. We are still in the process of getting some of our expenses reimbursed. I called an Uber to pick my wife and 3 daughters up to get them to a near by hotel. My son snd I stayed with the vehicle on the side of the road till the tow truck arrived. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I am writing to express serious safety concerns regarding our 2023 GMC Yukon XL Denali, which has been in our possession for less than two years and has only 24,000 miles. On multiple occasions, while driving at high speeds on the freeway with our four young children, the vehicle unexpectedly lost power and shifted into neutral without warning. This occurred approximately four times on March 9, 2025, when we contacted OnStar for assistance. Despite their response indicating no alerts on their end, we were advised to reach out again if the issue persisted. Unfortunately, the problem did occur again on March 16th, which prompted us to contact OnStar and have the vehicle towed to the nearest dealership for further evaluation. The service department has since informed us that the motor requires replacement. Upon conducting additional research, it seems this may be a known issue with many vehicles manufactured by GM around the same time. We are deeply concerned by this safety hazard, especially given that the malfunction could have led to a life-threatening accident. While we are grateful that we were fortunate enough to avoid any serious consequences, we believe a solution beyond standard repairs is necessary to restore our confidence in the safety of this vehicle. Our family’s well-being and trust in the reliability of our vehicle are of the utmost importance.

While on the expressway driving at highway speed the engine started backfiring and many codes were displayed on dashboard including “ rear drive disabled” “ service ECU” and many others. Pulled over and Had GMC Yukon towed to dealer. I’ve seen many complaints of the same thing and found this recall on your site GENERAL MOTORS DCS6866 URGENT - DISTRIBUTE IMMEDIATELY Date: April 24, 2024 Subject: N232413430 - Customer Satisfaction Program The dealer said they would fix broken valves and I would have to pay for the new computer that’s not under warranty.

Mar 13, 2025

Engine stopped and vehicle went into neutral. Family of 5 in the vehicle on a busy highway. Once pulled over safely from the highway and shut off ignition, the vehicle stayed in park and would not shift to neutral, the engine would not restart. Vehicle had to be towed into the GMC dealer. No warnings, messages or symptoms prior to the failure. The vehicle was just at the dealer for routine maintenance 4 days prior. Dealership found that the engine had seized.

Mar 8, 2025

Engine was making rattle noises and oil low message appeared. Brought to dealer who changed oil and said they couldn’t detect noises. I asked for a road test and while driving the tech noticed it, then the car died and shifted into neutral without warning.

Feb 27, 2025

Engine failed during trip on interstate without warning after 23k miles. Car went into neutral and we were without power. We coasted to side of road and had to be towed. Dealership has ordered new engine which will be covered under warranty. There were no warning lights before, during or after the incident — no check engine light. The only indicator is that car started making a rattling noise from the engine a few seconds before we lost power.

Feb 27, 2025

Vehicle is on its second engine. Shut down unexpectedly in middle of the road, with my three young children inside.

Feb 27, 2025

Upon acceleration the engine began to sputter with a clanking noise. After turning around to pull back into my drive way the engine began to work properly. I had the vehicle towed to Master GMC Augusta,GA. After the car was at the dealership for several days, I was told the issues could not be duplicated and there were no error codes. While returning home from the dealership the car began to sputter and decelerate at this time multiple lights flashed on and off on the dash including the check engine light. As I pulled to the side of the interstate the car once again corrected itself and all lights went out. I reached out to the dealership again. The car was returned to Master GMC again. This time I was notified the engine had failed due to metal shards in the engine. Since this vehicle had only 4988 miles at the time, and I had a 2021 Suburban prior with lifter failures, I was hesitate to keep this vehicle. I did trade the 2023 Yukon XL Denali at the time of engine failure.

Feb 26, 2025

Driving at highway speeds at night when engine sputtered, vehicle shifted itself into neutral and shut engine down. Slight difficulty steering for 1/4 of a mile with traffic continuing to pass at full highway speeds but was able to coast to a side road. No warnings of failure or check engine lights prior to event. Had just stopped for gas continued on trip and cruising about 77mph and hear a few noises as if vehicle ran our of gas and dash lit up letting me know it was shutting down, then shifted to neutral. Now dealing with GM travel interruption team and being told that it is engine failure due to faulty lifter/rod/bearing issue with no timeline as to when an engine replacement will be available. It has been inspected and confirmed by GMC service department in San Angelo TX

1. My engine failed at 10,000 miles, seized up completely. 2. Safety was a HUGE risk factor as the engine went out while driving 65 mph in a dangerous canyon highway, which made me lose control of being able to drive the vehicle to safety as I was needing to coast to the top of a hill and then coast down to even find a safe spot to pullover. My safety was also at risk because it then left me stranded in a canyon with no cell service where I was (and I couldn't even connect via OnStar because of the area I was stuck in), leaving me stranded for over 3 hours in 100 degree weather with no place to hide from the heat in the middle of summer. I also had my [XXX] with me and thank God we made it out of that situation alive. And thank goodness for bystanders I don't know what I would've done without them. 3. Yes, an engine replacement was made via warranty, but the new engine still make clunky/grindy sounds and even after having that looked at, I was turned away because apparently there were no performance issues but I still feel like I cannot rely on the vehicle especially driving longer distances. 4. Yes. see comment for #3. 5. NO warnings AT ALL were ever on my dash regarding my engine going out. There was never a check engine light prior to the engine seizing, nothing. So how was I supposed to know my engine was going to give out on me at only 10,000 miles? Regular maintenance was kept up to date. It just went out randomly with no warning. Feb 23, 2025

While driving down a two-lane highway, the vehicle unexpectedly lost power and shifted into neutral. We coasted to a stop and pulled into a driveway, at which point the vehicle would not restart. The vehicle was towed to the local GM dealership, where we were informed that the engine required replacement.

Feb 19, 2025

I was driving down the highway at 75 miles per hour and my engine shifted from drive to Neutral on its own, luckily I was able to get off to the side of the road as it would not shift back into drive. I got off the highway and was able to put it in park but it would not shift into any other gear. I turned the vehicle off and it would not power back on. It was completely dead. I had to have it towed and drug up onto truck and back off the truck as it was not shift into Neutral. It has now been at the GM dealership for 16 days. The engine had seized they said and needs a new one. this is a 2023 and only has slightly over 20K miles on it. They have told me there is a national shortage on engines and I am in line to get one but there is no telling on how long that will be. I am out of a car for 2 weeks and who knows how much longer. GM has given me a rental car but a very small SUV that does not fit my family. I have no idea how long it will be nor do they until I get a new engine in my vehicle. I was fortunate I was able to get to the side of the highway and stop safely.

Feb 18, 2025

motor locked up while driving on highway to vacation, when i tried to get warranty at a nearby dealership i was told engine was on back order with no release and the only option i had was to purchase a new vehicle . vehicle was under a year old with very low mileage on it.

Feb 15, 2025

2023 Yukon XL AT4 with 6.2L engine. [XXX] started to hear rattling noise coming from the engine area. I took the vehicle to a GMC dealer in Houston TX. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a defective transmission plate? Said they would have to order the part. Part arrived and while at the dealer they decided to inspect the oil pan. In the oil pan they found metal shavings. It was reported to me yesterday [XXX] that the engine would need to be replaced. This vehicle has roughly 17,000 miles and it’s been just over 1 1/2 years since purchased brand new by me. No confirmation of when a new motor will be available for replacement. Was told it could be months. Was also told that the vehicle is unsafe to drive since the engine could lock up at any time based on their findings. Feb 14, 2025

While driving on the interstate at 75mph the vehicle shutdown and would not allow a restart. I had to coast over to the emergency lane with no engine power. Once stopped the vehicle would not start. After having the vehicle hauled to the dealership I was informed that the engine had locked-up and a new engine would have to be ordered and replace the engine. The dealership could not provide me with a repair date because they said GMC has lots of problems with this engine and it would be backordered.

Feb 12, 2025

Engine blew up on interstate and left the vehicle in mobilized with only 60,000 miles and all regular maintenance was completed just catastrophically shut off and would not start in the middle of the interstate

Feb 11, 2025

Our 2023 GMC Yukon XL Denali that has suffered multiple severe mechanical failures well beyond what is reasonable for a vehicle of this class. G At approximately 14,000 miles, the vehicle’s 6.2L engine catastrophically failed, rendering it inoperable and requiring a full engine replacement. The engine seized and failed while operating the vehicle with her 3 small children on board and nearly caused a catastrophic accident. As a result, the vehicle was out of service for eight weeks, an unreasonable disruption and an unacceptable failure for a luxury SUV of this caliber. Now, (02/11/2025) at just 20,400 miles, the vehicle’s injectors have failed, further reinforcing that this vehicle is defective, unreliable, and unfit for continued ownership. This vehicle was purchased with the expectation of owning a dependable, high-performance SUV—not one plagued with major mechanical failures at such low mileage. The repeated, severe defects have substantially impaired the vehicle’s use, value, and safety, leaving use without reliable transportation for extended periods. Given these circumstances, it is clear that this vehicle does not meet the quality and durability standards expected from General Motors’ flagship SUV lineup and present SERIOUS risks of catastrophic injuries and/or death.

Feb 11, 2025

We were driving uphill on the highway, about 60 mph when the engine appeared to loose some power for about 10 seconds even though the engine was reving higher, and the ln the engine cut out. We coasted to a stop and then the electrical system was cutting out. I tried to restart the engine but it would not turn over at all, and the car’s electrical was intermittent. There was no warning or error lights before or during the engine failure. Photos provided are the messages on the instrument cluster when attempting to restart the engine. Vehicle was towed to the local GMC dealership, and they are replacing the engine under warranty. No eta on the engine replacement at this time.

Feb 10, 2025

At around 23,000 miles the vehicle collapsed a lifter - Took it to a dealership, fixed the lifter and asked them to confirm that the lobes of the cam were good and that all bearings were in good shape - approximately 2 weeks later, complete engine failure on a busy highway, no good place to pull off the road, no reimbursement for towing bill, no rental car - dealership put new motor in (took 5 weeks and GM did nothing to help us with the situation) and now we have the same bad 6.2 liter motor in the vehicle that is likely to fail again withing the 25,000 miles. Manufacturer refused to answer specific questions about the motor and could not tell me if this new motor was built to satisfy this known issue - the new motor has the same part number as the previous motor so consensus is that it has the same failure possibility leaving family in a dangerous place on the roads. GM still refuses to discuss this with us as the customer!

Feb 5, 2025

At 9,900 miles my safety camera system failed which disabled the cruise control and all safety features that used the camera. Car was out of service for nearly two weeks and subsequently fixed by the dealer under warranty at no charge. At 11,300 miles I was driving on an interstate highway in the left lane at rush hour, without warning the car stopped accelerating the car shifted into neutral and totally lost power. It was a very dangerous situation with me in the left lane in heavy traffic. I am a skillful driver and thankfully I was able to make it off the travel lanes on the highway. The temperature was 18 degrees at the time and I had to wait outside for a tow truck. The engine seized without warning or noise and this presents a severe danger to the driver of the vehicle and other vehicles on the highway. There was a substantial possibility that other vehicles could not avoid me as I was exiting the travel lanes. There was also a substantial possibility that the vehicle would simply be in the travel lane stopped on a divided highway.

Feb 3, 2025

The 2023 GMC Yukon had a complete loss of power and engine while driving 65 mph on a highway. The vehicle was unable to restart or be placed into neutral. No previous issues and no indications of failures. No fault codes or lights indicating any issues. Dealership informed me that the engine stopped working and gave an estimate of greater than 4 months for any replacement or repair.

Feb 3, 2025

Wife was driving down the interstate (18,000 or so miles on vehicle), and engine suddenly shut down causing loss of power. Had to safely maneuver vehicle off the side of the road to try to restart. After restart, continued driving without issue until noticeable clicking noise and engine thumping noise. Vehicle was diagnosed with lifter issues. After repair, and 2000 miles additional driving (20,000) ticking and thumping noise returned. Taken back for service and notified full engine replacement is necessary.

Feb 3, 2025

The engine failure was confirmed by dealer. My wife and I were traveling on I-74 at approximately 72 mph when the truck began to jerk slightly. This continued for about a mile, prompting me to ask if she felt it too. Suddenly, the truck lost power while we were driving on a two-lane interstate, putting our safety at risk. Fortunately, we were close enough to an exit and managed to coast to a nearby restaurant. Thankfully, it was not during peak business hours, and no vehicles were directly behind us at the time. Given the heavy semi-truck traffic on this stretch of interstate, the situation could have been significantly more dangerous.

Feb 2, 2025

The engine failed at highway speeds on approx. July 15 2024. Filed a claim with GM. GM replaced minimal engine parts to get the car running. GM refused to acknowledge this was a safety issue. Engine failed at highway speeds again approx 09/20/2024 this time just shutting off. When the engine oil was drained at the dealer it was silver. The entire engine was replaced this time. Again GM refused to acknowledge this was a safety hazard. After engine replacement the low oil light came on at the time of an oil change. I am monitoring oil burn on this new engine.

Jan 30, 2025

The engine completely failed without warning. The vehicle stalled and would not restart. I was unable to put the Yukon in neutral in order to move it out of the way of traffic. As I was in the process of turning I was completely blocking oncoming traffic. When the vehicle was finally towed to the dealership they told me that there was no oil in the engine. I had checked the oil 2 days prior and the dipstick showed full. We had no leaks in the driveway and no low oil indicator came on to warn us. A dealership in Holland Michigan had just looked at the vehicle to take care of some recall updates and reset the oil indicator telling me that we could get it taken care of later as it was only 2000 miles since the previous oil change and the previous oil change company hadn’t reset the percentage indicator properly. In the case of LOW OIL there was no warning whatsoever.

Engine failure - Yes, vehicle at dealer Engine failed on a busy road during rush hour, family in vehicle. Dealer confirmed engine needs replacement, lead time unknown. Expected later than Oct 2025. Inspected by certified dealer service dept. Warning lamps prior to failure, roughly .5 miles prior. Limited power.

While traveling on vacation, my family and I experienced a catastrophic engine failure in our GMC Yukon Denali, leaving us stranded in a small Texas town. After having the vehicle towed to the nearest dealership, we were informed that the engine is seized and requires a full replacement. Unfortunately, the dealer has no estimated timeline for when GM will be able to provide the necessary replacement engine, leaving us in a difficult and uncertain situation. This has caused significant disruption and hardship for my family.

Jan 23, 2025

Engine had to be replaced at 25000 miles.

Jan 23, 2025

My vehicle stopped on the middle of highway when the engine seized. I had to call tow truck and tow it to a dealer. It’s been 2 months without my vehicle, the dealer has engine on a back order and offer no remedy

Jan 23, 2025

On [XXX] while on vacation out of state with my family our 2023 GMC Yukon XL Denali stalled out on [XXX]. After safely navigating through 5 o'clock traffic just outside of Atlanta, the vehicle would not turn over or even attempt to start back up. We contacted onstar for assistance and was advised to stay with the vehicle while they dispatched a tow truck. After approximately 2 hours we contacted onstar again and was advised a tow truck wouldn't be available until morning. We then were able to obtain a ride with Lyft that totaled over $100 with 5 people and was given a $50 credit. I was forced to use Hilton Honors points to book a hotel. Then after the next morning around 10am I was advised the tow truck was enroute to the car. I then took an Uber to Enterprise where I was able to get a rental vehicle. And made my way to the dealership that our Yukon was towed to. After speaking with the service advisor I was told they wouldn't even have a diagnosis for a couple weeks. So we proceeded to head home (with the rental breaking down and several other issues we had to overcome). After we were able to get another rental vehicle, we made it home around 2am. We returned this rental vehicle as it was not suitable for our family, and contacted GM in hopes to get a rental vehicle while our $120k vehicle is sitting in the parking lot of a dealership 8 hours from our home. Only to be told they'd allow $44/day for a rental and we would need to rent it initially and they would reimburse us after we submitted our receipts. Unfortunately $44/day does not get us anything that can accommodate our family and finances are not allowing for this at this time. So we are managing with 1 car. On 1/9, we received a call from the dealership stating our engine was locked up, non repairable and they were waiting for guidance from GM. Then on 1/23 I was then advised by my GM rep that she was transferring the case to someone else and they would advise when the new engine has shipped. Jan 22, 2025

My engine stopped while I was driving. Unable to accelerate and the car will not start and is dead. Transmission light and DEF service lights came on. Luckily I was able to pull over to safety, barely. It was towed to the GMC dealership and waiting for it to be looked at. There were NO warning lights that came on previous to when this happened. This is a HUGE SAFETY concern for GM and it needs to be a recall because many, many others have reported the same complaints.

Jan 22, 2025

On [XXX] I was driving about 75mph on the freeway and suddenly the vehicle gear switched from drive to neutral. The vehicle dashboard read "vehicle condition not safe for shift" I tried to put the car back in drive by pushing the drive button but the vehicle was stuck in neutral. I pressed on the gas but it was not working since the car was in neutral. Since I could not use the gas to move forward, I could not go up on the ramp and was stuck on the busy freeway between the off ramp and the busy lanes of cars going 70+. The right rear end of my vehicle was in the offramp lane. I started to panic because I had my [XXX] daughter in the car. The steering wheel was completely locked and the rear axel was locked as well. There was no warning before the engine cut off. The electrical was all still working. I called AAA for a tow and 911 for CHP assistance since I was in dangerous spot. Took it to GMC Carlsbad Service, advisor Jason just called me and told me the engine had seized up and will most likely need the engine replaced. On 1/9/25 I had the car oil changed at the GMC service department in Escondido where I purchased the car. The vehicle has an open ticket and GMC is conducting a full investigation. I am told the whole engine will need to be replaced and will take 4 weeks from 1/22/25 to fix. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The vehicle stopped, and I was unable to manually put it in Neutral. I had it towed to the dealership and was told that my engine was froze up. I have 25,000 miles on my Denali. This is not normal. My truck just "stopped" and would not move on a busy traffic road- why are the vehicles failing at less than 30,000 miles? I still owe quite a bit and now wondering what is going on with GM? I saw the video on Tik Tok about engine failures and this is my truck.

Jan 20, 2025

I purchased a 2023 Yukon Denali Ultimate new in December 2023. It has 25,000 miles on it. Last week my wife was driving on the interstate and the vehicle abruptly shut down leaving her stranded on a narrow shoulder on a bridge. After it was towed to the dealer, the diagnosis was a connecting rod failure requiring an engine replacement. It was in the shop 2 weeks prior because the vehicle shifted into neutral on its own while driving at 60 mph on the highway, but the dealer found nothing wrong

The 2023 Yukon XL shut down while traveling at a speed of 70+ MPH.

Jan 19, 2025

Hi my 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate died in the middle of the road due to a catastrophic engine failure. That put my family and I in danger on the highway.

ENGINE REPLACED

Jan 15, 2025

As we were driving down a main road and taking off from a stop light on NW Expressway we had no warning before the car seemed to die and shift itself to N. It said to press the start button, that did nothing and the car would not power back up besides the lights and dash that were still working. We coasted to a stop in a neighborhood entrance. I'm so thankful I was not on the highway during rush hour traffic. Once stopped, we put it in park and tried to start it. A friend came and tried to jump it and still nothing. The dealership has confirmed it needs a full engine replacement. GM has agreed to help with cost but my car has sat inoperable for over 30 days as the engine is on back order with no ETA. It has a 6.2L engine and I had taken it in for pull consumption tests over the past 2 years. The dealerships were unable to duplicate the problem. Two days prior to the failure I had told my husband it was slow to crank and we needed to have the battery checked. I now believe it was the engine, not the battery. There were no warning lights on and my battery indicter showed to be in the middle (not lacking charge). I am aware of a voluntary customer satisfaction program that GM has issued but they have told me my VIN isn't one of the 5000 affected by this. In visiting with the dealership it appears they will not fully break down my engine until the new one has arrived but they are 90% sure of the cause as they've "seen several of these". This could have been catastrophic to have a car die with warning in traffic.

Complete engine failure while operating the vehicle with our children riding along as passengers. The engine failure nearly caused us to wreck. 2023 GMC Yukon XL Denali with only 15,000 miles. And now, I am being told that I need a complete engine replacement and that GMC is well aware of these engine failures and the product defects, yet GMC has refused to issue a recall. To add insult to injury, I’m being told by dealership that it may take several months to get a new engine! We will be pursuing legal action.

Driving in my newer GM Yukon Ultimate at 13k miles on the freeway. Vehicle with no warning shuts down while going 60mph in the middle lane. Was able to safely steer the car to the side of the road to avoid a collision. Vehicle lost all electrical contact. could not shift into neutral to tow. Turns out vehicle engine had to be replaced. GM approved a new engine replacement and are planning to return the vehicle back to put on the road. The vehicle is unsafe, at 5k miles, 6 months prior, the vehicle had to have the steering system replaced due to failure as well. Online research shows that others are having the same issue with failed engines on these GM vehicles and models.

Aug 5, 2024

At approximately 9,000 miles the engine started knocking. I took it to the dealer today and they called to confirm the engine and radiator needed to be replaced as there are metal shavings in the oil. I'm not sure if it is the 6.2L engine lifter issue or if this is something different, nonetheless, engine issues for GMC seem to be systemic based on quick research and seeing posts in forums and social media.

Jul 7, 2024

Engine shut off at freeway speeds (65mph) on 2 occasions. Driver was able to coast over to side of freeway both times. On 1st occasion CHP protected vehicle from other traffic on i-5 with safety lights and traffic control. On second occasion, tow truck came quickly and kids were evacuated to prevent heat stroke in 113 degree weather. The first incident was “repaired” with a new starter and battery fuse block at 21720mi, but only lasted to 21814mi before same event occurred. No warning of failure before or after incident, just a dead engine. Second event (7/2/2024) is still being investigated by dealership.

Jun 6, 2024

Driving at 70 mph, the vehicle shifted into neutral without warning. When attempting to place the vehicle back into drive, the vehicle dashboard Siad "vehicle condition not met" . I slowed the car and pulled over. It shifted into park but now will not start and will not go into neutral for towing.

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Yukon XL. The contact stated while driving 86 MPH in the middle lane, the vehicle shut off on five occasions. The vehicle was restarted, the steering column was locked, and the brake pedal was depressed but failed to respond. The contact stated that the rear axle had disengaged. The suspension leveling system had failed. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that there was an electrical failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 39,000.
