TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 GMC YUKON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKES FAILED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE BY USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE AND REAR BRAKE LINES FAILED BECAUSE OF RUST. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 200,000.

ABS LIGHT CAME ON WHEN BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY. DROVE 3 MILES TO A MEETING. WHEN IGNITION TURNED OFF THE LIGHT WENT OUT BUT I COULD HEAR A HUM. UNABLE TO LOCATE SOURCE OF HUM. SPENT 5 HOURS IN MEETING AND HUM WAS STILL PRESENT. CAR STARTED OK BUT ABS LIGHT CAME BACK ON. LATE IN DAY SO I TOOK TO LOCAL FIRESTONE SERVICE. THEY DETERMINED IT WAS THE ABS PUMP. IT WAS SO HOT IT BLISTERED MY FINGER WHEN I TOUCHED IT. TAPPED ON PUMP HOUSING TO GET IT TO GO OFF BUT NO SUCCESS. ONLY WAY TO STOP PUMP WAS TO REMOVE FUSE FROM FUSEBLOCK UNDER HOOD. I AM GLAD I DISCOVERED THIS. IF IT HAD BEEN MY WIFE THE CAR MOST LIKELY WOULD HAVE BEEN PUT BACK IN OUR GARAGE WITHOUT NOTICE OF THE HUM. MAY HAVE CAUGHT FIRE. ARE THERE ANY EXAMPLES OF THIS MODEL, OR OTHER MODELS HAVING SAME OR SIMILAR ABS PUMP AND ABS COMPUTER, CATCHING FIRE? THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE CIRCUIT LOGIC. IT SHOULD "FAIL SAFE", I.E. I APPLIED THE BRAKES ON MY VEHICLE IN THE DRIVEWAY AND FELT A POP AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I PUMPED THE PEDAL A FEW TIMES AND IT WENT TO THE FLOOR EACH TIME. I LOOKED AROUND THE VEHICLE AND THERE WAS A PUDDLE OF BRAKE FLUID UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR DOOR. I FELT AROUND THE FRAME WHERE THE LEAK WAS AND FELT A VERY CORRODED BRAKE LINE. I SEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND THAT MANY GM TRUCK OWNERS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND THERE IS AN NHTSA INVESTIGATION AND ENGINEERING ANALYSIS. SLOW SPEED STOP APPROACHING A LOCKED GATE. BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED. PEDAL DROPPED TO THE FLOOR WITH COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKE PRESSURE. BRAKE PEDAL WAS PUMPED TWICE WITH THE FINAL APPLICATION LOCKING ONE REAR WHEEL. THE ABOVE VEHICLE STOPPED WITHIN 2 FEET OF STRIKING A METAL SECURITY GATE. BRAKE FLUID WAS OBSERVED DRIPPING FROM UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE COMPARTMENT ON TO THE GROUND. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO MY MECHANIC. MECHANIC FOUND THAT THERE WAS EXCESSIVE RUST ON ALL METAL BRAKE TUBING. ONE OF THE METAL BRAKE LINES FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER TO THE ABS PUMP COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH CAUSING LOSS OF ALL BRAKE PRESSURE AND BRAKE FAILURE. ALL METAL BRAKE LINES HAD TO BE REPLACED. BEFORE AND AFTER THE INCIDENT THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS THAT WERE ACTIVATED ON THE DASH. *TT

RECURRENCE OF ANTILOCK-BRAKE PROBLEM WHICH WAS CAUSE OF AN EARLIER GM RECALL OF THIS SAME VEHICLE. EARLIER RECALL RESULTED IN A 1.5 HOUR TASK TO REMOVE, CLEAN AND RE-INSTALL ABS SENSOR WITH A RUST-PREVENTATIVE APPLIED. THE SAME PROBLEM IS RECURRING NOW AND GM CUSTOMER SUPPORT REFUSES TO RE-ADDRESS THE PROBLEM ON MY VEHICLE. BACKGROUND: IN APRIL 2005, THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION OPENED AN INVESTIGATION OF MORE THAN 1.2 MILLION GM PICKUPS AND SUVS IN 20 STATES BECAUSE OF QUESTIONS OVER THE ANTILOCK BRAKES. IN 2005, GM SPOKESMAN ALAN ADLER SAID ROAD GRIME CAN WEDGE ITS WAY INTO A PLASTIC PIECE THAT COVERS THE ABS SENSOR NEAR THE WHEEL HUB, RESULTING IN SALT CORROSION. THE CORROSION LEADS THE SENSORS TO ACTIVATE THE ABS SYSTEM AT SPEEDS OF 3.7 MILES PER HOUR TO 10 MPH, REQUIRING A LONGER STOPPING DISTANCE. GM SAID THERE HAVE BEEN 228 CRASHES REPORTED THROUGH THE END OF MAY 2005, INCLUDING 10 MINOR INJURIES. THE COMPANY RECALLED ABOUT 150,000 PICKUPS IN EASTERN CANADA IN NOVEMBER 2004 FROM THE SAME MODEL YEARS BECAUSE OF THE CONDITION IN THE ANTILOCK BRAKES. ADLER SAID THE COMPANY DECIDED TO ISSUE THE 2005 RECALL IN 14 STATES BASED UPON INCIDENT RATES. GM AND THE GOVERNMENT HAVE RECEIVED MORE THAN 700 COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE PROBLEM.

WE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE ABS SYSTEM ON OUR YUKON AND THE DEALER INSISTS THAT IT IS AN ISOLATED CASE BUT I HAVE FOUND MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ONLINE FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SINCE THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO BRAKE WITH MUCH RELIANCE ON THE ABS SYSTEM. BY THIS I MEAN THAT THE 2001 GMC YUKON DOES NOT HAVE A BRAKE PROPORTIONING VALVE THAT WILL REDIRECT BRAKING FORCE TOWARDS THE FRONT BRAKES AS THE VEHICLE MASS SHIFTS FORWARD UNDER BRAKING LOADS. THIS IN TURN CAUSES THE REAR BRAKES TO LOCK UP PREMATURELY UNDER MODERATE TO HEAVY BRAKE APPLICATION. IT HAS NEARLY CAUSED OUR SUV TO ROLL-OVER ON ONE OCCASION AND FRANKLY, WE'RE AFRAID TO SIMPLY SELL IT AND PASS THE LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM ONTO SOMEONE ELSE. I AM DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED WITH GMC FOR NOT ADDRESSING THIS DEADLY PROBLEM IN THE WESTERN STATES AND ONLY CLAIMING THAT "SNOW BELT" STATE VEHICLES ARE AFFECTED. I LOST BRAKING ON MY 2001 GMC YUKON 4 WD TWICE DURING THE LAST MONTH, FIRST TIME I HAD 3 BRAKE LINES REPLACED THAT HAD FAILED DUE TO CORROSTON, THEN A WEEK LATER ANOTHER BRAKE LINE FAILED WHILE I WAS TOWING A BOAT. I HAD TO DOWN SHIFT TO PREVENT A CRASH. I HAVE SPEND OVER $1500 REPLACING ABS SENSORS, BRAKE LINES, ROTORS AND EMERGENCY BRAKE PARTS, ALL FAILED FROM CORRISION. NOTHING BUT BRAKE PROBLEMS WITH THIS YUKON WITH ONLY 36K MILES .IN THE REPAIR SHOP NOW.

THE CONTACT HAD TO HAVE THE BRAKE LINES CUSTOMIZED FOR HIS SPECIFIC VEHICLE. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE FAILURE WAS COMMON FOR HIS YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL YET THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS LEFT WITH THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 119,000.

I HAVE A 2001 GMC YUKON SUV. THE ABS CONTROLLER MODULE WENT OUT AT 22,K MILES AND COST $1900 TO REPLACE. AT A GMC DEALER AND WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY ALTHOUGH THE CAR WAS STILL IN WARRANTY. THIS WEEK AT ~45K MILES IT WENT OUT AGAIN AND COST $1750 AT A LOCAL GARAGE. SOME THING IS DEFINITELY WRONG WHEN TWO SUCH MODULES FAIL IN SUCH A SHORT TIME. THERE IS A VERY DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE HERE. I WOULD LIKE TO REPORT THE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE BRAKE LINES ON MY SUV. WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, THE BRAKE LIGHT ON THE DASH ILLUMINATED, THE BREAKS FELT A LITTLE SOFT UPON BRAKING. TOOK IT IN TO THE SHOP FOR EVALUATION AND WAS TOLD THAT THE BRAKE LINES FROM THE ABS TO THE REAR BREAKS HAD RUPTURED. THIS OCCURRED AT 54,444 MILES ON AUG 16, 2007. APPROXIMATELY 8 MONTHS LATER, THE SAME SITUATION HAPPENED, BRAKE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND BRAKES FELT SPONGY. TOOK IT INTO THE SHOP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE BRAKE LINES FROM THE ABS TO THE FRONT BRAKES HAD RUPTURED THIS TIME. THIS HAPPENED ON 3/28/08 AND 58,921 MILES. ALL LINES WERE FABRICATED AND REPLACED. SENT MODULE TO A COMPANY THAT REPLACED THE FAULTY PARTS FOR $100, WITH PARTS THAT WELL EXCEED SHODDY OEM STANDARDS, WITH A LIFETIME WARRANTY ON THE PARTS AS WELL. *JB

WAS DRIVING TRUCK AND NOTICED LOUD MOTOR NOISE IN ADDITION TO ENGINE RUNNING. TURNED TRUCK OFF IN GARAGE AND A MOTOR NOISE WAS STILL RUNNING WITH ENGINE TURNED OFF. ABS LIGHT ON DASH ILLUMINATED. UNLOADED CHILD, SELF AND GROCERIES FROM TRUCK. 30 MINUTES LATER, (TRYING TO FIGURE OUT NEXT STEP TO CORRECT PROBLEM SINCE IT WAS A SUNDAY), MOTOR NOISE IS STILL RUNNING AND ENGINE IS OFF. DROVE TRUCK TO FIRESTONE GARAGE. TURNED ENGINE OFF, MOTOR NOISE STILL RUNNING. GARAGE HOOKED TRUCK UP TO DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM AND SAID THAT THERE WAS A FAILURE IN ABS SYSTEM. THEY DISCONNECTED ABS SYSTEM AND MOTOR NOISE STOPPED. SAID THAT THE PART WAS DANGEROUSLY HOT AND THAT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN VERY BAD BECAUSE THE ABS SYSTEM SITS RIGHT UNDER/OVER THE GAS TANK. CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO MY FAMILY AND HOUSE IF IT CAUSED A FIRE IN MY GARAGE? WHAT IF I COULDN'T HAVE FOUND A GARAGE THAT WAS OPEN ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON? THERE AREN'T MANY, BELIEVE ME. I HAVE RECEIVED A QUOTE TO HAVE PART REPLACED, BUT HAVE NOT FIXED YET. IT IS VERY INCONVENIENT FOR ME TO LEAVE MY TRUCK AT A DEALERSHIP FOR THE LENGTH OF TIME THIS IS GOING TO TAKE TO BE DIAGNOSED AGAIN (AND OF COURSE THE DEALER WANTS ME TO PAY THE $99 DIAGNOSTIC FEE AGAIN AFTER I HAVE ALREADY PAID THIS ONCE TO FIRESTONE). I HAVE A 2001 GMC YUKON SLT, AND I HAVE HAD AN ABS ISSUE. I HEARD A CONSTANT RUNNING SOUND, EVEN WHEN THE VEHICLE IS NOT RUNNING. NARROWED IT DOWN TO THE ABS, AND HAD TO PULL THE FUSE TO STOP IT. NOW MY BRAKE & ABS LIGHTS ARE CONSTANTLY ILLUMINATED. THE DEALERS WILL NOT FIX IT, JUST REPLACE THEM. WHICH IS AROUND A GRAND TO DO. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE WAS JUST OVER THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY PERIOD AND GMC PAID FOR THE PART AND I PAID FOR THE LABOR ONLY AFTER A MULTITUDE OF COMPLAINTS TO GMC. THE MODULE HAS FAILED AGAIN. THIS IS A SERIOUS FLAW AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND THE DEALER/MANUFACTURER IS CHOOSING TO PUT THEIR CUSTOMERS AT RISK AND NOT ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM. *NM

DT: THE CONTACT WAS SLOWING DOWN TO COME TO A STOP AND THE ABS LIGHT AND PARKING LIGHT CAME ON. HE INCREASED HIS STOPPING DISTANCE IN ORDER TO GET THE VEHICLE TO COME TO A STOP. THE SEAT BELT ON THE PASSENGER'S SIDE IN THE SECOND ROW OF THE VEHICLE LOCKED IN THE BUCKLE, OTHER TIMES IT WILL COME LOOSE WHILE IN THE SEAT BELT. THE BRAKE PEDAL HAD BECOME INCREASINGLY HARD TO PUSH OVER THE COURSE OF A FEW WEEKS. FINALLY, THE ABS WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND THE ABS PUMP RAN CONTINUALLY, HEATING THE FLOOR PAN OF THE VEHICLE. I REMOVED THE ABS FUSE TO STOP THE PUMP. THIS IN TURN HAS DISABLED THE ABS AND THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM ON THE VEHICLE. IN RESEARCHING THE ISSUE, IT SEEMS THE REPAIR FROM GM IS VERY EXPENSIVE ($1100) AND USES THE SAME VERSION OF A COMMONLY FAILING PART THAT MIGHT ONLY LAST ANOTHER 40-50K MILES. *JB

DT: WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE THE OWNER SAW THE ABS LIGHT COME ON AND DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS. THIS OCCURRED IN JULY 2005. THE OWNER RETURNED HOME FROM A TRIP. GM HAS RECALLED SEVERAL OF ITS SUVS AND PICKUPS DUE TO A BAD ANTI-LOCK BRAKE DESIGN. THIS HAS OCCURRED IN CANADA AND 14 US STATES OF WHICH MINNESOTA IS NOT INCLUDED. THIS PAST FALL I WAS HAVING THE DESCRIBED PROBLEMS OF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES COMING ON WHENEVER I WAS BRAKING AT SLOW SPEEDS. THIS USUALLY OCCURRED AT STOP SIGNS. I DIDN'T FEEL SAFE WITH THE BRAKES AND THE IMPENDING WINTER AND DECIDED TO TAKE IT IN TO GET FIXED. THEY REPLACED A SENSOR SAYING IT WAS BAD AND I PAID ~$230 FOR THE FIX. PRIOR TO GETTING IT FIXED I HAD ONSTAR RUN DIAGNOSTICS TO SEE IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM. AFTER GETTING IT FIXED AND HEARING OF THE RECALL IN CANADA I SPOKE WITH GM WHO SAID THAT THEY WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING FOR ME. NOW WITH THESE 14 OTHER STATES I AM FURIOUS. IT SEEMS LIKE THEY SHOULD BE COVERING THE COSTS OF MY REPAIRS SINCE I HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS. TO PICK AND CHOOSE THE STATES WHILE COMPROMISING SAFETY IS ABSURD. THE CONSUMER WAS APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION AND WITHOUT WARNING, ANOTHER DRIVER CUT IN FRONT OF THE CONSUMER VEHILCE. THE DRIVER APPLIED THE BRAKES, BUT THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THE EBCM WENT OUT ON MY 2001 GMC YUKON ABS SYSTEM CAUSING THE ABS PUMP TO RUN CONTINUALLY EVEN WITHOUT THE KEY ON. PULLING THE FUSE STOPPED THE PUMP FROM RUNNING, BUT I DON'T HAVE ABS, WHICH TO ME IS A SAFETY CONCERN. GM SHOULD RECALL THIS MODULE FOR SAFETY REASONS, ESPECIALLY SINCE THERE IS A LONG LIST OF VEHICALS WITH THIS KNOWN PROBLEM. I HAVE NOT REPLACED THIS PART DUE TO THE $1000 PRICE FROM THE DEALER, NOR DO I INTEND TO UNTIL GM ISSUES A RECALL ON THIS DEFECTIVE PART.
