Took my Yukon in for L87 engine recall. Advisor informed me my engine failed. No symptoms, sounds or messages appeared.’

Dec 29, 2025

My vehicle was apart of the GM L87 recall. I took it to the dealership and it passed the recall and received the remedy which was an oil change. Now about 3 months later, I was driving in the highway at approximately 70 mph when the vehicle lost power and shifted to neutral. I had to attempt to veer off the highway with no acceleration. Upon getting it to the side of the highway, it wouldn’t do anything at all and had to be towed. The dealership has deemed it needs a new engine due to the failure the L87s are facing. We had no warning at all prior to the engine failure, and assumed that after passing a recall it had some degree of safety.

The vehicle drove fine had no warning/ check engine lights. My girlfriend came up to a busy intersection and when she proceeded to cross the intersection the vehicles motor locked up stopping the vehicle in the middle of the intersection with traffic coming from both north and south direction. We had poor visibility due to blowing snow so she had to bail from the vehicle and stand on the side of the road so she would not be harmed if the vehicle was t boned. Vehicle stopped so hard and fast it threw her into the steering wheel. Was unable to get the vehicle restarted and could not get it to shift into neutral so vehicle blocked 1 lane of traffic completely and half of another lane until tow truck arrived to remove from road.

In April 2022, I purchased a brand-new 2022 Yukon Denali from Roberts-Robinson Chevrolet GMC in Excelsior Springs, MO. Shortly thereafter, the first engine failure occurred in October 2022. The vehicle was towed to GMC AutoNation in Golden, CO, where it remained until repairs were completed in January 2023. Soon after the vehicle was returned, the second engine failure occurred in February 2023. The vehicle was again towed to GMC AutoNation, and repairs were not completed until April 2023. At that time, given the repeated failures, I worked with GMC and Roberts-Robinson Chevrolet GMC to replace the vehicle entirely. I took delivery of a new 2023 GMC Yukon Denali as a resolution. On October 8, 2025, the engine on the 2023 Yukon Denali also failed, marking the third major engine failure I have experienced across these vehicles. The vehicle was towed again to GMC AutoNation in Golden, CO, where it remained for two months. I picked up the "repaired" vehicle on Tuesday, December 9, 2025. This pattern of failures has caused significant disruption and distress. I have spent countless hours coordinating tows, securing rental vehicles, and seeking reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses. More importantly, these repeated engine failures, all of which occurred while I was driving 65 MPH on I-70 through the Colorado mountains, have created extremely dangerous situations for me and my loved ones. Navigating heavy traffic during sudden engine failure and waiting on the roadside for assistance has been frightening and unacceptable for a vehicle of this caliber. Overall, this experience has been incredibly stressful and disappointing.

I brought my 2023 Yukon in for the 6.2 GM inspection, and was told my engine was good, and the engine oil was changed. Approximately 3 weeks later the engine in the Yukon failed (seized) while I was towing my boat at 55mph, nearly causing an accident. I was able to pull the vehicle and boat to the side of the highway in a precarious location, which put me, my family and property in danger. There were no warning signs or messages on the dash, and no engine sounds. I believe GM's recall inspection and "preventative" oil change did nothing, and gave me a false sense that the truck was safe to tow with. I want to make sure the NHTSA is aware that the engine failed even after being screened with the recall. THIS FALSE REASURRANCE THAT THE TRUCK IS SAFE IS PUTTING THE PUBLIC AT RISK

GM has failed to resolve repeated issues on my vehicle (VIN: [XXX] ). I was never notified of any official buyback denial. GM Customer Assistance continues to avoid clarifying the status and refuses to provide documentation of the denial. This creates an unresolved safety and reliability concern. I need an investigation into the consistent mechanical defects paired with GM’s refusal to properly process my claim. Dec 2, 2025

I bought my 2023 Yukon Denali Ultimate on or around August 9 2023, and I bought it brand new. On May 28 2024, around 30k miles, I was on the highway and could no longer accelerate. I luckily got myself into the breakdown lane before my car shut down & lost power, ended up being towed to the closest dealership. After 18 days at the dealership, I finally had my car back with a "new engine". Fast forward to November 25, 2025, I was on the highway again, my dash lit up telling me to "press start". As i figured that was not a good idea while driving in the fast lane on the highway, I did not. in a panic I got myself over to the breakdown lane where my car turned off. This time (November 2025), I still had power, but no car turnover. After 6 days of my car sitting at the dealership, they finally had the time to look at the issue. The Dealership did the recall and got the car started, but the car still had a funny sound that the mechanics didn’t like , so they were waiting to hear back from higher up people as to what to do. Today I got the call that they will be replacing the engine for a second time and I will not have my car back until the first week of January. There were zero warning lamps, Zero Symptoms, nothing. I am Lucky that the Highway wasn’t too busy in that moment, because there were many 18 wheelers on the road that day, and one almost swerved into my car missing it by about two feet while my dead car sat in the breakdown lane. Yes I called the state police, Yes one trooper kindly pulled behind me to ask if I was safe and had a tow on the way. But that truck that nearly plowed into my dead car could have prevented me from picking my [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] daughters up from school, forever . To say that I am disgusted with GM, is an understatement. They’re risking lives. I should not fear for my life, my kids lives in a new, "safe" vehicle. No pun intended, but this is highway robbery. The vehicle engine experienced a failure on the highway at very high speeds with no warnings leading up to this occurrence, same as many of the experiences of the customers with the 6.2L engines, which have been recalled for these defects. This GMC Yukon has the 5.3L engine, however, has the same defects as the 6.2L engine, excessive oil consumption and eventually engine failure. I am without a vehicle, with an extremely high car loan, and have to replace an engine in a two year old $75,000 vehicle. This should be covered by GM as it was a known issue and continues to be sold to unknowing customers. Furthermore, I am paying even more money to put another engine in this vehicle with the potential of having the same issues as the problem has not been corrected. This is deceptive and theft by GM in my opinion, and not safe to have engines failing in the highway with no warnings at all.

Nov 10, 2025

I was driving down 85 South bound at mile marker 16 the engine started messing up causing me and my family to be pushed over to the median. Once I was able to fight it over to the median it started smoking and i was afraid it was going to catch fire, so me and my family had to get out on the side of the interstate until help showed up and said it was safe to get back into the car. I had to use OnStar to get a tow truck, after the tow truck got there and i made it to the closest dealership to find out that the so called recall that the GM dealership fixed did not help the fact that the engine was messed up. So i tried to get a loaner or rental car for my family of 6 and they rented me a small SUV that I can not get all my kids into, I was told they did not have anything that bigger so now I am having to make multiple trips getting my kids to school. Plus they are saying it is going to be months before I can get my car back because the engine is on back order.

my 2023 GMC Yukon Denali (VIN: [XXX] ), which is included in Safety Recall N252494003 for a known defect affecting the L87 6.2L V8 engine. My vehicle was first inspected under warranty in December 2024 at Serra Traverse City Buick GMC due to a burning smell. I was informed at that time that no issues were found. I was later told by the former service manager that the technician who evaluated my vehicle during that visit was let go due to poor workmanship and lack of product knowledge. Since that time, on two separate oil changes — January 8, 2025 and May 9, 2025 — my engine was found completely out of oil, with no oil on the dipstick. The documentation had to be retroactively added after my request. This pattern raises serious concerns about oil consumption or internal engine damage consistent with the recall defect. The dealership declined to replace the engine or perform any further diagnostics beyond the standard recall inspection. I was advised to retrieve the vehicle. However, I remain deeply concerned about the long-term safety and reliability of this vehicle, especially given GM’s acknowledgment that this defect may lead to engine failure and loss of propulsion. I have made multiple efforts to escalate this issue through both the dealership and GM’s customer service line. I was advised by Service Advisor [XXX] to contact the GM representative for regional review. He directed me to file a bbb claim.. Both GM and bbb denied my claim, stating out of warranty. However, the dealer explained that my issue were documented under warranty and would be handled appropriately if the issue persisted. GM contacted me an offered a $4000 credit. Unfortunately the problem still persist. I’m 3000 miles from being due for an oil change and again have no oil on my dipstick. After stopping at a stop sign, I accelerated for a few seconds, but then it shifted to Neutral and the screen said "Press Start Again". I pressed Start, accelerated for a few seconds, and again it shifted to Neutral and the screen said "Press Start Again." I repeated this process a few times and luckily made it to the end of our driveway. I could no longer move the car nor could I shift gears. When trying to shift gears, the screen said "Conditions Not Correct for Shift." I requested Roadside Assistance. There is no way to get this car into neutral so he had to manually pull it onto the tow truck bed. The nearest dealership diagnosed it as engine failure and replaced the engine. There were no warning signs prior to this incident.

Recall issued in April states that the Engine could experience a catastrophic failure and needs to be inspected for possible replacement. At this time (8-30-25) they are not allowing the dealers to perform these inspections. Why can't they at least perform the inspection to see if in fact the Engine will not need to be replaced? They are being irresponsible with their approach to this issue.

Jul 29, 2025

Driving on the highway and the engine completely shut down. The car was automatically placed into neutral and I coasted off the highway to a nearby gas station. The car was taken to the dealer, and they confirmed that it requires a brand new engine.

There is a safety recall but it has not yet been resolved, risking lives.

There's a recall on my SUV ... recall ID 25V274. The dealer told me that there is no part available currently so they refuse to inspect my SUV. I believe if the inspection revealed that there is no defect relating to the recall, the dealer is required to use higher viscosity oil. I've asked them to perform this inspection while they wait for the parts, but they refuse to do so. As summer vacation is here, what if the defect in fact does exist in my SUV that will cause a dead engine while driving on the highway, and we get hit by a semitruck killing me and my family. That would be too late isn't it!? How long must I wait for the parts and continue to put my me and my family's safety at risk?

Vehicle was brought to dealership Fountain Buick GMC 8701 S Orange Blossom Trail, Orlando, FL 32809 (866) 465-4364 for recall on engine. Dealership told our company that they were unable to repair or diagnose the recall this month June 2025. Vehicle has had an intermittent check engine light from time to time. I was instructed that it was safe to still drive the vehicle.

I am filing a complaint regarding my 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate, equipped with the 6.2L L87 V8 engine, which is currently under NHTSA Recall 24V-266 for a potential engine failure due to defective bottom-end components. I received the official recall notice indicating that the issue poses a serious safety risk, including possible loss of propulsion and engine failure without warning. However, despite this being a mandatory safety recall, I’ve been informed by my dealership that no remedy is currently available, and I have been provided no timeline for repair or inspection. This effectively renders my $115,000 vehicle unsafe for normal use, yet I am left with no clear recourse, no loaner vehicle, and no repair timeline. I am now forced to restrict my driving to short errands only to reduce risk—completely unacceptable for a vehicle of this cost, class, and usage expectation. I am requesting that NHTSA formally investigate the timeliness and adequacy of GM's response to this recall and consider enforcing provisions of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act that require manufacturers to remedy defects within a reasonable timeframe. Thousands of affected owners are currently left without a fix for a potentially dangerous engine flaw. I was driving on the highway going about 50 mph and the engine just stopped. It was very dangerous, and I couldn't get to a completely safe spot. I was stuck for 45 minutes there until police could get to my Yukon and help provide safety. I had 2 other passengers in the car. All of us were put at great risk and the surrounding traffic was also at risk. The Triple A towing took over an hour to get the vehicle on a flatbed because they couldn't get the Yukon in Neutral. There were absolutely no warning lights or any weird noises, the car shifted out of drive and would not go back into any gear. I am waiting for the dealership to decide what to do. My main reason for writing this complaint is this is a BIG HAZARD, not only for people who drive/ride in these vehicles but for every vehicle on the roads around them. When they stop with no warning, accidents and I'm sure some with fatalities will happen. This is a critical situation, and these vehicles should all be off the road. My Yukon was in my dealership service for an oil change about 1 week prior to this incident and I had a long conversation about the recall. They said my Yukon looked great and nothing was needed unless I had any problems. Since there have been so many others with the failed engine, ALL vehicles with this recall should be off the road to prevent totally innocent people from being in these dangerous situations. This is preventable if these cars are forbidden on the roads!!! GM must take responsibility before lives are lost due to this negligent reaction of issuing a recall but saying it is safe to keep driving unless there is a problem. If the first sign of a problem is failure with resulting catastrophic outcomes, then just issuing a recall is not enough. This must be addressed, PLEASE. This was a terrifying experience for me and my riders. I have no idea if the police filed the report but they spent alot of time trying to keep everything safe due to this issue.

While traveling away from home with my son my vehicle said push to start. I was able to coast over to the side of the two lane highway and attempted several times to restart my vehicle. After several phone calls between two dealerships, I was told “If you can get it here we can help you”. So I had to file a claim with my insurance to have my vehicle towed to a dealership with only having service while the WiFi was operating. The tow truck kept getting pushed further and further back. Over 2 and a half hours later, keeping my son restrained inside the vehicle for safety, luckily an officer stopped and took myself and my son out of the 97 deg heat all the way to our destination another 2 hours away. From July to September my vehicle was in the dealership service dept waiting on a galactic back ordered 6.2 engine and main fuse repair.

Recall for engine propulsion. Say that there is no remedy yet. I have read the warnings about what may happen and I am terrified to drive the vehicle. GM says to contact the dealer, dealer says to contact GM. No one wants to take initiative. If they cannot fix the car, they should buy the car go back so I can get something different. I have been driving an old car around because I’m am afraid of this one. Please help me.

I own a 2023 GMC Yukon Denali with the 6.2L V8 engine. A safety recall was recently issued for this vehicle due to a potential engine defect that could result in sudden and severe failure. However, GM has not provided a remedy, and dealerships are unable to offer any repair or trade-in options while the recall remains open and unresolved. I live in a rural area with limited cell service and long distances between towns. This makes the potential for sudden engine failure even more dangerous. Out of serious concern for my family’s safety, I no longer feel comfortable allowing my wife or our [XXX] child to ride in or use the vehicle. The risk of being stranded—or worse, getting into an accident due to engine failure—is too great given our location and the nature of this defect. I attempted to trade in the vehicle at a GMC dealership to get into a safer and unaffected vehicle, but the dealer refused to accept it because of the recall. This leaves me stuck with a vehicle that has a known safety issue and no solution in sight, limiting both my transportation options and peace of mind. There were no warning lights or prior symptoms before the recall. The issue was disclosed by the manufacturer. A dealer has confirmed the recall is active, but no fix exists. This situation is unacceptable and has real-world safety and financial consequences for families like mine. I urge the NHTSA to hold GM accountable and ensure a remedy is made available immediately to protect consumers who are left in limbo by this unresolved and serious safety defect. When i get in my truck to leave after my truck is parked for awhile, and take off after i stop i get a rattling which sounds like its coming from the engine. I brought my truck into the dealship when i noticed the probelm but of course the techs " couldnt hear it". I hear it everyday since!

Driving on freeway, engine shut down and transmission shifted to neutral. Contacted onstar and remote diagnostics showed no issue. Truck would not start. Towed to dealership. After a week could not diagnose problem. Dealer had GM specialist diagnose vehicle who said required new engine. Claimed metal shavings in oil system but did not specify cause. Engine replaced at manufacturer expense. Did not receive reimbursement for rental car as promised. Dissatisfied with vehicle, traded out after owning for only a year.

My engine failed while I was driving & I had no warning. It was very scary & dangerous. Luckily I was in an area where I could get off the road quickly. It started skipping then lost power. I basically coasted off the road & had to call for help. It was making a bad knocking noise. This happened 2 weeks ago on April 16. It has been sitting at Glynn Smith.GMC dealership since. I was told by the service manager that the engine failed & I will need a new engine. the engines are on back order now. I fear they will replace it with the same problem. I see the recall this week but will changing the oil viscosity really fix it?? Doubtful. Someone is going to get killed or hurt from this problem. I do not want the same issue to happen with a new engine.

On March 28, my 2023 Yukon Denali stalled on a 4 lane road forcing me to make an emergency stop on the side of the road in a right hand turn lane. The vehicle required towing to a local GMC dealership. They could not restart the vehicle and upon evaluation found metal shavings in the oil. They have recommended an engine replacement. There was no warning, it just stalled and would not restart. My Yukon remains at the dealership and we are still waiting for an engine.

While driving on the mass pike with my fiancé and 4 kids our motor suddenly died. We were using cruise control going 75mph and the vehicle shifted into neutral itself and the car died. I managed to make it to a break down lane and we had to sit there for 2.5 hours before a tow showed up to help. The dealership said the motor seized and we were under the 60K for warranty and it was covered. They got us a rental the next day and then on the 3rd day they called and said it was lack of oil changes that caused it and they asked if i had records of service history. We bought the vehicle used and only had the vehicle long enough to perform 1 oil change. We did our oil change on time and I'm trying to locate service records from the dealership we bought it from. However there were no signs of dark and contaminated oil when i did the oil change at my shop and also no sounds or warnings coming from the vehicle prior to the motor seizing up. I think they are trying to get out of paying for the motor when its clearly a known problem with these 6.2l engines.

The evening of Tuesday [XXX] driving from College Station, TX to Pasadena TX my GMC 2023 GMC Yukon starting making a clicking noise but no warning lights. For about an hour the noise persisted louder and softer and the check engine light would flash 3 times then stop, for a while then flash again. I did notice that when applying gas I didn't get the normal increase in acceleration but I couldn't tell if it was a power issue or a transmission issue. I was traveling about 60mph on a freeway thankfully in the right lane the vehicle suddenly shut off with no warning. I had no power, brakes did work and I could steer and I was able to make it to the area between the main lanes of the freeway and the lane of an onramp. Once stopped I attempted to restart the vehicle and nothing happened. We were stuck. Onstar was contacted and a tow to a dealership was arranged. A sheriff deputy stationed his vehicle behind us to provide protection until the tow truck arrived. The vehicle is now at a GCM dealer and I have been told the engine has locked up and needs a complete replacement. I have no other information in those regards. There is a long back order for new engines and the estimate is at 4 weeks. I did see the check engine light flash 3 times and then go off for a while then start again, but we were no where close to home and it was somewhat late at night. I also had coworkers in the vehicle taking them back to our office. At this point this is as much as I know but thankfully i was already in the right lane or this might have been a much more difficult situation. I was driving approximately 45 MPH and my 2023 Yukon STOPPED completely and it would not move at all, it stopped just into where the intersection starts. After 2 hours it was towed to the GMC dealership. I am now told that it needs a new engine at just 15,000 miles. Apparently this is a “thing” I had no warning whatsoever. The dealership has it now and it is waiting on a new engine. Extremes scary and now they said they will put a new one in and it “shouldn’t happen again”. Ridiculous Engines are on back order for at least 60 days because of this problem I’m told.

Apr 17, 2025

Engine shut off twice driving down the highway at 70 mph. Electronics completely shut down then started back up, engine shifted to neutral and wouldn't let me shift out of it. Pulled over to shoulder and restarted engine. Took to Ewing GMC and no issue was found, vehicle was returned. A week later, exact same thing, but this time engine would not restart. Had to be towed to dealership. Engine is blown and have been waiting on a replacement for 3 weeks currently. This is an extremely dangerous issue, people will die from this if it is not corrected. Even once I get the vehicle back, I'm concerned about my family's safety while driving it.

I was sitting at a stop light and my vehicle completely failed without any warning. Was not able to start, etc. it was completely dead. There was no notice of issues or problems; no messages, no lights, etc. The vehicle had to be towed to a dealer and has been sitting for over 5 weeks waiting for a new motor. I was told that there is no timeline for when a new motor will be available and that it could be months! I travel with my vehicle for work so it is really needed!

[XXX] [XXX] [XXX] April 17th, 2025 Spearfish Cadillac Attn: [Service Manager or General Manager] North Main Spearfish, SD 57783 Subject: Engine Failure and Safety Concerns – 2023 GMC Denali Ultimate (6.2L V8) Before ordering my 2023 GMC Denali Ultimate (MSRP $96,000), I raised concerns about online reports of engine problems with the 6.2L V8. I was assured by your staff that there were no known issues with this engine and that I had nothing to worry about. However, within the first year of ownership, I began reading verified reports about widespread engine failures involving this same 6.2L engine across various GM models. I contacted your dealership again and was told that my vehicle’s VIN did not indicate any problem or need for replacement. Since that time, I have experienced two severe engine failures, both at highway speeds of approximately 80 mph. Each failure caused my vehicle to abruptly shut down and lurch into a different lane of traffic—creating traumatic and extremely dangerous situations for both myself and surrounding drivers. In addition, I encountered another instance in which the engine would not start. A stranger helped me jump-start the vehicle on two separate occasions. Believing the issue could be battery-related, I replaced the battery (which was less than three years old), only to suspect later that the engine may have partially locked up. I am formally requesting the following: A written response confirming whether a replacement engine has been or will be installed in my vehicle, and if so, whether it is a new build, remanufactured, or an identical L87 engine model. Confirmation of whether any updated parts or engineering revisions were made to resolve known lifter or bearing issues. Approximately 14’000 miles we were told a rod went through the engine. Our vehicle failed at a high rate of speed leaving myself, wife, and 2 young children to pull off a major highway and call for police to help slow traffic. This happened while driving 70 mph on the highway. The only warning we received was when the car went from “D” drive to “N” neutral on the highway. Fortunately, we had enough time to pull to the side of the road before complete engine failure. GMC road side was not helpful. We were told we would have to find a ride home over an hour away, and when our ride arrived, so did the tow truck. Then, they had to drag the vehicle onto the flatbed because the tow truck company did not have the unlocking device for the wheels. Upon getting it to our house, the tow truck company had to rock our vehicle off the bed! We were not able to tow it where we purchased it. We either had to tow it to the nearest GM dealer or our house. We chose our house because the nearest GM dealer from where we broke down would've been over an hour away from our house. Our second engine failed 2200 miles later while my wife was sitting at a light in a busy intersection. The car again went from “D” to “N,” and it was immovable. The cops had to be called because the tow company couldn’t come fast enough. We were towed out of the intersection, but I waited over 5 hours with several dropped tows for a tow company. That occurred on my birthday. We are now on our third engine, and GMC wouldn’t warranty the engine. Our brand new tires went at 32,000 miles because GMC could not confirm or deny that rocking our vehicle on and off the flatbed three times didn’t affect the alignment. The front two tires inside tread was worn. I was told the tires from the factory are 50+ thousand mile tires. We barely got 32,000 miles. We’ve had multiple issues with electronics, back up camera, and media package. The Lemon Law won’t cover us because our first engine did not fail before 12,000 miles.

We own a 2023 GMC Yukon Denali with the 6.2L engine. On [XXX], I was driving to work and merging into traffic on [XXX] just south of Nashville. When getting up to speed, the engine shut off and the truck started to decelerate. Only warning light was notification to "Hit Start Button" - which off course I was feverously doing as I was in rush-hour traffic. Luckily, I was able to move across two lanes and came to a stop on the freeway shoulder. Called OnStar services where they sent a tow truck, but the driver didn't know how to tow the truck since he was unable to shift into 'neutral' as the electronic system didn't allow that without the motor on. A second tow truck was sent by my local dealer and then they had to 'drag' the Yukon onto the tow truck bed so they could haul it. After the dealer reviewed the issue, determined we needed an entire motor as the engine oil had metal shavings in it and had frozen the motor. We are one of seven vehicles at our dealership waiting on a new 6.2L motor. GM has provided a large SUV rental during the time we have been waiting. WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY ON 2/21/25. MY 2023 YUKON (WITH GM ENGINE L87 IN IT) WARNING LIGHT CAME ON CALLING THAT THE TRUCK SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL, PRESS START. PULLED OVER TO BREAK DOWN LANE, RESTARTED AND WENT ON OUR WAY. CALLED DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE NOT HEARD OF ANY TYPE OF ISSUE AND STATED TO BRING BY IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. 8 DAYS LATER THE 2023 YUKON WITH GM ENGINE L87 SIEZED ON 3/1/25 WITH ~23,000 ON IT WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. VECHIE WAS TOWED TO GMC DEALERSHIP WHERE THE SUV WAS PURCHASED AND HAS BEEN SITTING EVER SINCE WHILE WE WAIT FOR A NEW ENGINE COME IN. DEALER HAS BEEN HELPFUL, BUT I HAVE READ THAT THERE IS A BIGGER ISSUE WTH THE L87 ENGINE.

This vehicle had a complete engine failure. We lost power and could not start it. We were stranded on a busy highway. This all happened going 65 mph. The dealer told us that we would need a complete engine replacement. We had about 16,500 miles on it. I personally know two other people that this has happened too.

New Denali less then 1 year old had lifter problems and needed lifters replaced and a camshaft. Started knocking while driving on the highway and tough to travel 4 lanes to get off the road. This is a serious issue.Very concerned because of widespread problems. I hope NHTSA does the same thing they did with Kia regarding the 2.o turbo engines. My last car was a Sorento 2.o turbo with defective engine. Kia agreed to a lifetime warranty for that failure. Luckily they did because mine failed and they replaced the engine. Once replaced I bought the Yukon. Bame similar issue. I hope a settlement included lifetime warranty. Driving 75 mph on [XXX]. No power under gas pedal. Transmission shifted on its own to neutral and there were no lights warning on the dash. Yes my safety and that of 3 children ([XXX, XXX, and [XXX] ) as well as my mother [XXX] ) and my wife [XXX] ) were all put at risk. I had no way to accelerate or warning from the vehicle that the engine had failed. It just so happened my wife noticed it was in neutral and luckily I had room to get from the left lane to the shoulder where the speed limit is 75 mph. Dash information center said "Press start to restart vehicle". I pulled off safely to the shoulder with 7 passengers (including myself). Tried to restart the car but it was no working. The vehicle wouldn't shut off the electrical accessories either and kept repeating the same warning. The vehicle was inspected at the dealer after it was towed. There were no warning lights or signs of any issues prior to this incident. Had the vehicle for less than 2 years and under 19k miles. GM towed the vehicle to the dealership who held it for the weekend and then Monday afternoon told me the engine was blown. I was not offered a comparable vehicle under their warranty to replace it and was told I need to wait an unknown amount of time to get the vehicle back on the road as all engines are on back order. We were driving our 2023 GMC Yukon AT4 from Phoenix, Arizona to Flagstaff, Arizona, which is about 2.5 hours north. A few hours into our drive, about 40 miles away from Flagstaff, as we were driving ~75mph on the [XXX] highway (in the middle of nowhere), all of the sudden our GMC just stopped working - it started slowing down on its own, put itself into Neutral, and nothing was working. We were able to pull over to the side of the road where we used OnStar to reach GMC Service, who called us a tow truck. As we were on with OnStar we tried restarting the vehicle and nothing was responsive. For hours our family, two adults and one child, were stuck on the side of the [XXX] highway with semi-trucks flying by us waiting for the tow truck. We were then told the two truck could only fit two persons, so I had to order my own Uber to pickup myself and my son in the middle of nowhere, leaving my husband to wait alone, dangerously, for the tow truck. Important to note a major winter storm was coming in this afternoon, so with no power it was also freezing cold in the broken down vehicle. The GMC was towed to the Chevy dealer/service center in Flagstaff, who was able to have a mechanic look at the vehicle that day. After a few hours they contacted us and let us know the entire engine blew and would need to be replaced. They let us know this is a "known issue" with certain Chevy/GMC/Cadillac SUV's that have the 6.2 engine. We purchased this vehicle brand new in late 2023 - at the time of this "catastrophic engine failure" issue, it had only ~12,000 miles on it. We were forced to leave our GMC in Flagstaff for repair, and told it would likely be 4 weeks or more to get the new engine. We were also left without a 4x4 vehicle for the entirety of our "vacation" in a major winter storm. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to failure. Engine seized up entirely while driving causing catastrophic damage that requires a whole new motor.

Mar 12, 2025

I was traveling on the highway when my 2023 Yukon Denali engine shut off and switched to the neutral gear with any warnings. The dashboard display read "press start again" as I coasted to the shoulder of the highway. I was able to put the vehicle in "park" and re-start the engine after a couple of tries. I got a couple miles down the road, got off on an exit ramp then it shut off again and I again coasted to the shoulder of the highway. Again the display read "press start again", but this time the vehicle would NOT restart at all. I had full electrical power in the vehicle during both engine failures. I had the vehicle towed to my local GMC dealership. The dealership told me that I needed a new engine after assessing the vehicle.

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact pulled over to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle was able to be restarted. The contact became aware that the vehicle had entered LIMP Mode. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 44,000.

Engine had catastrophic failure, engine shut down with no warning while driving at highway speed. Huge vehicle safety concern.

i was with my entire family 3 hours from home on a ski trip loaded with gear and the motor decided to go. i had to pull into an abandoned lot, leave my family in a car with no heat, walk 6 miles up a mountain to get another vehicle and pick up the family. Then i had to call a local tow company to drive out pick up the vehicle and myself and drive 3 hours home drop the vehicle at the dealer and then myself at home. The vehicle was not even pulled in for 2 weeks to be looked at (no other vehicle was available) and then they told us the motor was shot - lifters cam and other things and that the head gasket was on back order indefinitly. This happened the beginning of February its now March 6, the vehicle is in pieces at the dealer with no time frame of when we can get it back. Meanwhile its costing me 1670$/ mo plus insurance. For a 100k$ vehicle to go with 30k miles is wildly unacceptable. I have had no luck getting a return call from a representative with GM which is why i am filing this complaint now.

Mar 5, 2025

My vehicle started making a terrible noise. I had it towed to the nearest GM service center. It was determined that the vehicle, a 2023 Yukon Denali (less than 26000 miles) needed a new engine due to thrust bearing failure causing the engine block to be scored and contamination of debris internally.

Mar 4, 2025

Engine failed on interstate causing total stoppage. 18,000 miles on the vehicle and GM had to replace the engine completely which took 3 months. ZERO warning lights prior to the failure, no check engine light once failure occurred.

Mar 4, 2025

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Yukon. The contact stated while her husband was driving at 75 MPH, the vehicle independently accelerated without depressing the accelerator pedal. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the transmission started to downshift, and the vehicle started losing motive power. The contact's husband merged to the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. While the vehicle was off, the message to press enter to start the vehicle was displayed; however, the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer and diagnosed with total engine failure. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not repaired because the vehicle was not under recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 34,000.

On Friday 2/21/25, while driving on the Interstate at Highway speeds, the dashboard said to idle the engine. The engine then stalled and thankfully I had enough speed and there was a shoulder available to pull off on. The dashboard then gave many messages including voltage, overheating, high oil temperature, idle engine, etc... I was unable to restart the vehicle on the side of the interstate. I was towed to the dealer who advised the engine would have to be replaced. This vehicle has a 6.2L gas engine with 39,223 (approx) miles.

Vehicle stopped working on a major road almost in the intersection in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The Vehicle is not able to be put in neutral to safely push it away to safer area. Had to be towed back to Texas at my expense of $400 and Service department says it is due to a blown 6.2l motor.

Mar 1, 2025

I was driving home from work at around 60 mph. Very sunddly their was a rattling metal sounds and then vehicle struggled to maintain speed. Before pulling off the highway at the next exit. On the exit ramp the engine turned off and would not turn back on. The vehicle was also stuck in neutral and not able to shift out of neutral for towing. There was no worning lamps or messages even after the noise and reduced power. Vehicle was towed to local dealership on Tuesday evening, as this was not scheduled it took them to diagnosis the issue as engine failure and recommending to replace the engine. The vehicle is a 6.2L GMC Yukon Denali with 23k miles. All service has been done at the dealer with no outstanding work prior to the engine failure. Where it gets more disappointing is the lack of information for time to fix. The replacement engine was ordered by the dealer on February 14th. As of February 28th they did not have any information....So i called GMC on that 1800 number listed on GM Document DCS6866 referencing customer satisfaction program N232413430. The first agent disconnected without filing a case. The second agent had to restart the process and was told that there was nothing they would do for 14 days after the case was opened before it would be elevated. When talking to the agent they denied any information related to the GM Customer Satisfaction Program or any knowledge of what seems to be a wide spread defect on 6.2L engines. The service and support for a $90k vehicle from, in fairness they have provided access to rental vehicle from a local auto shop. The vehicle is far smaller and different from our vehicle we purchased. The vehicle is still sitting at the dealership service center and is not functional until the engine is repalced.

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle independently shifted into neutral and stalled in the middle of the highway. An unknown message was displayed. In addition, after restarting the vehicle, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact stated that the transmission then shifted into neutral(N) independently after driving for several miles. The contact stated that the vehicle would not crank and was towed to a local dealer. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift into neutral and was towed while in park(P). The vehicle was diagnosed and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the local dealer for further investigation. The contact related the failure to GM investigation: PE25001. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,549.

While we were driving at a high speed all control of the vehicle shut down. There was absolutely no warning that this was going to happen to that anything in the vehicle was breaking down. We were able to get to the side of the road and the vehicle locked into N. From that point on the car did not work. After being looked at my GMC, they decided that it needs a new engine. It only has under 15K miles. We were told that some somehow pieces of metal were in the engine. Engines are currently on a national backorder and we have been without our vehicle for over 4 weeks. They have no expected date that this will be fixed.

I had enough momentum to partially stop on the shoulder of the highway but part of the vehicle was still in the flow of traffic. It was a dangerous situation for sure, especially since I had my [XXX] son in the car with me. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership where I purchased it, they said it was a connecting rod failure and I would need a new engine. This was on [XXX] and I still do not have my vehicle, they said the engine was on backorder. I have been in regular contact with GMC customer service and they have been largely unhelpful and unwilling to explore any other option that me just waiting for an engine to come it. Feb 19, 2025

On Jan. 19, 2025, while driving home, I started hearing a loud knocking noise from my engine. Lucky I was still on residential streets so I was able to safely pull over to a parking lot. I was planning to drive the 40 miles home on the freeway when my wife said it might not be safe. That was when I decided to drive to my sister's house. Only when I pulled into the drive way the check engine light finally came on. The next day, I had the vehicle towed to the dealership and they diagnosed that I needed a new engine. They did not go into specifics as to why I will need a whole new engine but they did tell me that this was common and that they had other vehicles waiting for an engine also. My vehicle has been sitting there since.

Traveling at 65 MPH on highway when electronic dash went completely blank, audio on car stopped as did the engine! Steering of vehicle remained in tact so I was fortunate to be able to "coast" to the side of the highway. Feb 14, 2025

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that while driving at 65 MPH on the Interstate with his family in the vehicle, the engine stalled, and the rear wheels locked up. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact and his family were left stranded in the middle of the Interstate. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer to be diagnosed and the contact was informed that the main bearing in the engine had seized, and the engine block needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired; however, after retrieving the vehicle, while driving to the residence the failure recurred and the wheels locked up again. The contact pulled over to the side of the roadway and exited the vehicle. The vehicle was towed back to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the vehicle had experienced the same failure as before. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

While driving my 2023 Yukon Denali on [XXX] towards [XXX] , the check engine light came on and my truck stopped hard as if I jammed the brea but my foot was still on the gas and the RPM’s was moving. I was lucky that I was in the far right lane and there was no car behind me at the time or I would have caused an accident. I after 30 minutes waiting on the side of the road, I started up my 2023 Denali after letting it sit and put it in drive and drove 30 mph because I did not want to take the chance of my suv stopping abruptly again. I contacted a GMC Dealership and explained the situation and I told I am on my own and I would have to pay up to $10,000 for a engine and it would be no guarantee of being reimbursed by GM should I need a engine. While driving the 370 miles from Fairbanks to Anchorage with our family and dogs, our vehicle shut down completely with no warning. The drive is through a very remote section of Alaska. While passing a slower vehicle, our Yukon completely shut down, to include the all controls including the dash and lights. We were unable to complete the pass, leaving us in direct line with on coming traffic with no ability to speed up to get around the other vehicle. The other vehicle, not knowing we had lost all power, continued driving the same speed and eventually we were able to get back into the proper lane and coast to a stop on the side of the 2 lane highway. The vehicle would not start and with the temperatures outside at 12 degrees it got chilly fast. Luckily we travel with all of our winter gear. Had this incident happened on one of the many steep descents or curves with snow and ice, the outcome could have been disastrous. My wife has decided that if the vehicle does get fixed, she does not feel safe driving home in it. Reading online forums show that this is a very common occurrence and individuals are looking into a class action lawsuit against GM due to the safety issues associated with this. An individual passing by had a code reader and tried to reset the ECM but could not. I will include the report.

On [XXX], while driving on the [XXX] Highway with my family, the vehicle automatically shifted into neutral and I lost control of the accelerator pedal. I safely changed lanes and pulled over to the shoulder. Once in park, the vehicle never started again. We were stranded on the side of the road until my husband and a tow truck returned to collect my family and tow the vehicle to the Fairbanks dealership. The engine was diagnosed as an engine failure requiring complete engine replacement. We are a military family and were on orders to move our household on [XXX]. January 16, 2025: Driving down the interstate near Atlanta Ga going 75 MPH, our 2023 Yukon Denali with 28,585 miles on it, abruptly started gearing down. The vehicle would not accelerate, it was coming to a stop on its on. Traffic was very heavy and it was a very scary situation. After managing to get the vehicle barely off the interstate it totally lost power and would not start. The vehicle was towed to the local GMC Dealership and within 30 minutes they told us the engine had locked up. We had to get a rental car to continue our trip and haven’t had much luck, so far, getting reimbursed. As of today February 6th, GMC cannot give us an estimated repair date as our engine is on back order!

Engine failed on highway while my wife was driving with 3 kids aged 5 and under. Had to pull over on shoulder. Called GMC roadside and they said they would be there in 2 hours. Then a police officer came by, told her she was in too dangerous of a spot and that the police would be towing the vehicle in 20 minutes if she didn't move it. Police then towed the car while my wife, on the shoulder of a busy highway, had to frantically move the 3 kids and their car seats into a friends car. Got car towed to GMC and they did a full engine replacement. No warning lights, no signs of malfunction, and car had about 4k miles on it at the time.

While driving at highway speed we experienced a bearing failure that let to an engine replacement. The engine was subsequently replaced for galling from the piston arm. No warnings or engine malfunction notices occurred prior to the incident. It is my understanding there is an investigation into this specific problem with the 6.2L GMC engine. We were fortunately able to exit the freeway and immediately stop the vehicle to avoid any further safety risks.

The complete engine on this vehicle was replaced by GM on 04/05/2024 at 24,069 miles. This was due to the known engine failures GM is having with the 6.2L engine. This is a well known and documented safety issue that GM is refusing to properly address. Vehicles with the 6.2L L87 engine are having complete engine failures while driving at highway speeds, which is a huge safety issue. I live in north Georgia where the roads are steep with sharp blind curves. I frequently cross steep mountains with high elevations that require frequent brake usage and constant steering through the sharp curves. I also drive on the interstate in Atlanta, GA where the posted speed limit is 70MPH. An engine failure in any of my driving circumstances is life threatening. As you know, when the engine fails you're braking and steering capabilities are greatly reduced. For example, if I was to experience an engine failure while driving across the mountain I would be unable to stop or get the vehicle off the road. Without being able to move, I could be stranded in a blind curve where I could be struck by another vehicle. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle and I'm in constant fear that it will have another engine failure like so many other 6.2L owners are experiencing. I'm morally unable to sell this vehicle to someone else due to the known engine failures. GM will not take responsibility and fix the issue or buy it back. So, I'm stuck with a $90,000 SUV that is unsafe to drive. Please continue to investigate this safety issue! You are saving lives by doing so. Thank you for everything you have done and are continuing to do. Please let me know if you need additional information or I can be of assistance.

The engine turned off while driving TWICE with NO WARNING. The first time the engine turned off without warning doing around 60MPH but was able to be restarted and ran normally for about a week or so. The second and final time that the engine turned off without warning was about a week after the first incident. The engine would not restart, in fact, it would not even crank. The vehicle was towed to the dealership where it was determined to be a crankshaft bearing failure causing a bottom end engine failure. Metal shavings were found in the oil pan. Vehicle is only 14 months old and has 22,754 miles. All service was done by dealer at manufacturers suggested intervals.

Blown motor on 2023 Yukon (after owning the SUV exactly 1 month). 3600 miles on it. Picked it up January 9, 2023, motor blown on Feb 9th, 2023. From my dealer: Tech found perform tear down on the engine- remove lower oil pan and discovery metal inside the oil pan. perform inspect on the bottom engine and found rod bearings spun- causing internal premature engine failure. Final ticket write up included: engine appeared to be “starving for oil” cylinders #5 & 6 piston rod bearings seized. Major internal engine failure. I went through the full engine replacement at a local dealer then dealt with GM for 2 months and eventually they did fully replace this vehicle with a new 2023 GMC YUKON. Luckily expedited the build as the first one took 9 months to receive. we took deliver of new vehicle in June of 2023. Can provide the new VIN if necessary. Current 6.2L has about 30k miles on it .

Passing a semi up a hill going 75 and the motor shuts off. As the Yukon slowed, the semi slowed down as well. It was difficult trying to get the Yukon to the right shoulder. There was no warnings or anything on the dash. The vehicle just quit running. Tried restarting and it was like the battery was dead. Got it towed to a dealership and they said the engine was ruined from 6 of the 8 rod bearings disintegrating. Took almost a month to replace with the problem being so common and no engines available.

Jan 18, 2025

I’ve had the engine blown and replaced twice. The first time it failed in the middle of an intersection. We could not put it in neutral to move it. We had to call a tow truck. No check engine lights just a noise. The engine had failed bc the bearings couldn’t get oil. The second time it blew I was driving down the interstate and same thing only a noise so I pulled over and the car died. Also had to call a tow truck. It was the same as the first time the engine had blew because of the bearings not getting any oil. So now I’m on my third engine in a 2023, hoping that it doesn’t do it again.

Pulled over to the side of the road and was able to restart the engine after shifting to park. Engine was harder to start than usual and cranked slowly. After restarting, the engine ran fine for the remainder of the trip, but would occasionally have difficulty cranking. After this incident, the engine developed a knock that would vary with engine RPM, and sounded like a defective connecting rod bearing. Pulled the dipstick and noticed metal shavings in the oil. Took the vehicle to local dealership who confirmed the engine was defective and would require replacement. Vehicle has been at the dealership since December 5th waiting for a backordered engine.

1. The authorized dealer repair center stated my engine has failed and needs to be replaced. It is currently at the dealer so it's unknown if it is available for inspection. I'm sure if the inspector would go to the dealer I can make that process happen. 2. The point of complete engine failure has not occurred as of yet to me so It is unknown how this would effect my safety. One would have to assume that engine failure could always be a safety problem if driving when it occurred. 3. The problem I reported has been confirmed by the authorized dealer. 4. The vehicle has been inspected by the authorized dealer repair center but I am not aware of any other people that performed same inspection. 5. There was a knocking noise come from the engine when I accelerated and loss of power when accelerating. The noise was first detected 12/24/24 and I made an appointment with the authorized dealer repair center online. My vehicle was dropped off the first available day on 12/26/24. I have time & date video of the engine issue if wanted.

On March 15, while driving on a busy road our vehicle STOPPED from catastrophic engine failure without warning which put my family and I instantly in danger and nearly got us killed. Due to the high traffic where it stopped we were scared to stay in the vehicle and also scared to exit it .. so we contacted the police before calling a tow truck. When the police arrived, they parked a car in front and behind us and put their flashers on to make us somewhat more safer... we had the vehicle towed to the local dealership and contacted the actual dealership where we purchased this brand new vehicle with zero miles that was about an hour away and they sent soneone to get the SUV . Once they ran a diagnostic they discovered metal shavings in the oil and said it needed a new engine! What's alarming is that after hearing this we started googling terms like "Denali engine failure" "Cadillac ecalade engine failure" and discovered a huge amount of consumer complaints from other GMC customers on forums with their brand new GMC vehicles with little to no mileage and ALL had the metal shavings in the oil and shockingly needed new engines! FYSA- All complaints are on the 6.2 engines specifically. This is a huge safety issue as these vehicles are stopping in the road without warning. If someone doesn't do something I'm afraid someone is going to get killed. Please look into this and help us. We paid over $100k for a vehicle we no longer can trust. We were not given a police report but I'm sure the information about this incident is available by FPD since they were called and remained on scene with us for nearly an hour waiting on the tow truck. The dealership was great by the way, we do not blame them as we feel they are victims too. This is a GMC problem who are knowingly building and selling unsafe SUVs with the 6.2 defective engine that's literally stopping without warning while driving.

Vehicle shuts off and goes into neutral at highway speeds I am reaching out because it has happened to me three times in a seven month old vehicle and also five family members with Yukon Tahoe, Escalade same issue is very very dangerous please, I beg you take this very seriously and contact me so I could verify to you the other owners that I’ve had the same issue, but have not went far enough to make a complaint. I will prove it to you with other owners, same problem, where the vehicle just shuts off.

After driving on an Interstate Highway for approximately 2 hours I exited and brought the vehicle to a complete stop at a stop sign while preparing to turn right onto a busy 2-lane road. I applied moderate gas pedal pressure and the vehicle momentarily accelerated and moved forward but then the engine stalled as the transmission was attempting to shift automatically from 1st to 2nd gear. The vehicle was partially stuck out into the busy road without any power. This created a traffic conflict and near-miss with cars traveling along the 2-lane road that I was attempting to turn onto. I restarted the vehicle and drove it slowly onto the shoulder. The vehicle’s engine repeatedly stalled any time enough gas pedal pressure was applied to cause the transmission to attempt to shift from 1st to 2nd gear. This issue only occurs after the engine and transmission have been running at operating temperature for several minutes. The dealership could not duplicate this issue, but they only drove the vehicle a total of 7 miles over two different occasions. The vehicle was purchased new on June 23, 2023 and had approximately 1,700 miles on it when the issue first occurred. There were no warning lights or messages illuminated prior to the engine stalling. Vehicle is currently at a dealership service department being evaluated.
