2019 HONDA ACCORD HYBRID Forward Collision Avoidance Problems

While traveling at approximately 55 mph yesterday, in daylight, with no other cars in front, back, or to the side of our car, it radically braked on its own. The collision mitigation system warning light has frequently flashed on the dashboard since we bought the car new in 2019 but never did it apply the brakes on its own. Dealerships over the years have told us "this just happens", and offered no fix for the false positive alerts. This is a dangerous situation which could result in an accident or even death of occupants if not resolved by Honda. I spoke with several dealerships since the phantom braking event and they tell me they hear this complaint often. Being an intermittent situation, it is extremely difficult to diagnose and resolve. Something needs to be done.

I will report it separately, but my Honda Odyssey has the exactly same issue now. I have 2 Honda cars, and both of them have the same issue. I strongly suggest that Honda should recall their front camera and they should reimburse the expense we already paid for it.

I was driving on a city street at about 30mph. There was no one in front of me or behind me. Nothing in the road. The orange rectangular brake light came on for no reason, kept flashing and it felt as if the brakes were automatically being pumped, slowing the car down to a compete stop. In addition, I had no control of the steering. It was very dangerous situation which could have resulted in accident or injury.

Forward collision warning stopped working after a system upgrade on my 2019 Honda Accord hybrid. I activate the forward support and immediately it turns off. This is a safety issue. The system assist in breaking in time to maintain car distance and avoid a collision. Contacted Honda. I was told to take it to service at my cost.

I have was called steering sticking in my steering wheel when I’m driving and it stuck straight and I have to turn it a little bit. I have to kinda yank it just a tad bit because the steering is sticking is an issue with other Hondas. I’m having it also.

On multiple occasion my vehicle will brake unexpectedly with no object in the road or surrounding my car. It has done it at freeway speeds as well as driving through parking lots. It often will sense construction repairs on the road and think I am departing the lane again slamming on the brakes (on the freeway) I have luckily avoided accidents but have had numerous close calls.

07/28/2023 - Car showed many brake system errors: electric parking brake, vehicle stability, adaptive cruise control, etc. Took to Heritage Honda, Bel Air, MD, and got error code diagnosis of PI20-00, brake system/pedal simulator failure. Heritage "reflashed" pedal simulator and cleared code. Told OK to drive but if brake system errors showed up again, pull over to side of road and have car towed. Drove 20+ miles home. 07/29/2023 - Car again showed brake system errors as on 07/28. Husband and I drove car around our development and there were no brakes, even after husband pumping and pushing down on brake pedal very hard. 07/31/2023 - Flat bed towed car to Martin Honda, Newark, DE and got same error code. Paid to replace brake pedal simulator, PN 01469-TWA-A56. Issue is that brake system did not fail safely, because failure of pedal simulator left me with no brakes. Requested Honda pay entire Martin Honda invoice but Honda paid $1400 of repair. Have since requested that Honda pay remaining $1000 that I paid, plus diagnostic fee for Heritage Honda, and towing charge.

I purchased a 2019 certified pre-owned Honda Accord Touring Hybrid in February, 2022. This was the second Honda Accord Touring Hybrid I've owned, so I was already very familiar with this vehicle. Over the next couple months, I started experiencing some odd things - the LKAS and Lane Departure systems weren't operating correctly consistently. For example, the steering wheel would start shaking and warning lights pop up on my dash, and the steering wheel is pulling to one direction thinking I'm veering into another lane when I'm not. This was concerning, but at the time the infotainment system was crashing regularly and that was more concerning. In addition, the Automatic Emergency Braking also seemed to be off, engaging at times when there wasn't a vehicle in front of me. In May, 2022 I was driving on the highway with the Adaptive Cruise Control set to 70mph (the posted speed limit). There were no other cars on the highway in my line of sight, when without warning, the Automatic Emergency Braking system engaged and the car slammed on the brakes, coming to nearly a complete stop. Alarms, lights and brakes all fully engaged in a sudden and unexpected manner, absolutely putting my life at risk. I was so shaken up by this experience that I had to pull over and compose myself before continuing on to my destination. I took the vehicle in to my local Honda dealership and told them of all the issues. To date, the only issue fixed is the Infotainment System. I've taken my vehicle in to Honda multiple times, and although trouble-shooting and 'fixes' have been done, within a couple of weeks from the 'fix', the car starts behaving like this again. Honda repeatedly says they can't find a problem or they've 'fixed' the problem. Clearly there is a problem and none of the 'fixes' have worked. I don't feel safe driving the car, but cannot afford to replace it.

Noticed there is already an investigation open. My car is literally afraid of shadows and other objects that just aren't there. It will slam on the brakes as it detects that there is an impending crash despite any cars near me. It has almost caused 3 accidents with the cars behind me. When driving on the Interstate Highway with the adaptive cruise control, on rare and unpredictable time, the car will suddenly flash the brake warning and brake and/or rapidly slow down. Pressing the accelerator will override the issue. However, it is not reproducible. It can occur any time of day or night.

Collision mitigation braking system error reported on the car it says to take to the dealer for service also says that adaptive cruise could be affected also. I read that many other owners are reporting this issue.

Multiple time the car will apply the emergency braking system when there are no cars in front of me. Mainly it happens on a multi-lane road and I am overtaking the car to the right of me, especially if I am on a curve to the left. The car will suddenly apply the brakes which can aid to the loss of control of the car. If the road were icy, it would almost certainly cause a loss of control and an accident. It has happened on a straight stretch of road, but it is more rare. Initially this was a rare occasion, however it has increased in frequency as the car ages. Now that the warrantee has expired I have not taken it in to have it checked, but I feel I am going to need to do it. There were no warning signs, lamps, or messages other than the brakes being applied and the emergency braking light coming on. When I saw there were other occurrences of this issue, I had to file this complaint. I believe this needs to be a recall issue before more serious injuries or fatalities occur. Below it asked when it happened, how many miles on the car, and the answer is multiple times at multiple speed and first started at around 20,000 miles. Again it has gotten worse over time. the car currently has about 46,000 miles

I saw NHTSA is investigating some Honda vehicles for unnecessary emergency braking incidents. I've had this problem as well and wanted to report it. The 2019 Honda Accord Hybrid, multiple times over the past 3+ years, has engaged the brakes when there were no cars in front of me. From my recollection this happens at medium to high speeds (40mph+) so if someone were behind me they may rear-end my car. This has happened probably a half dozen times over the past 3 years but there is no way to reliably reproduce it as it seems random. I haven't had any inspections, nor are there any warning lamps or messages relating to this. Note: The date I am including is not necessarily when it happened as I don't have those dates. But it's required.

We were driving down the road, when my car automatically “detected” a car in front of me and braked extremely hard. Thing is, there were no car or obstacle in front is. I was able to catch that on my dash cam.

On 6/25/21, while driving my 2019 Honda Accord Hybrid Ex-L, at a speed of 30-40 mph the car displayed various warnings. I was on a major road with no where to pull over. Within about a block the car unexpectedly braked hard and slowed down from about 40 to 15 mph. I attempted to press on the gas to avoid causing an accident but, the car continued at the slower speed and did not react to my gas press. This issue then cleared and I was able to accelerate. This was very scary but to make it worse about a 1/2 block later my car veered to the left and out of my lane, again at this point I was on high alert and the veer was not correct. I was able to gain control and get the vehicle back in the correct lane. I then pulled into a parking lot(~1 block later). I tried to document all of the warnings at this time. I called Randy Kuehl Honda and decided to drive back roads to the dealership(~4 miles). Prior to arriving(~3.8 miles into drive), additional warnings were displayed. I arrived at the dealership and they said that the issue was because there was a crack in my brake light and water had gotten in. But I am having a hard time accepting that because of a busted taillight it is normal/acceptable/safe for the car to brake and swerve and lose all of the indicated systems. Seems like a pretty big SAFETY CONCERN. I can quickly find other instances similar to mine on the internet. Below is a list of all the warnings I was able to remember. THE CMBS WILL BREAK AUTOMATICALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHEN ROUNDING CORNERS WHEN A SEMI IS NEXT TO IT. THE CAR SLAMMING ON THE BRAKES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHEN YOU DON'T EXPECT IT IS VERY SCARY. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES.

ON DECEMBER 26, 2020, I WAS LEAVING WORK, AFTER A 12 HOUR SHIFT AT THE HOSPITAL. WHILE BACKING INTO AN ALLEYWAY MY CAR STRUCK A LARGE ROLL-OFF DUMPSTER (WHICH WAS CADDY CORNERED IN THE ALLEY) OF THE BACK, DRIVER QUARTER PANEL AND BACK DRIVER DOOR. THE REARVIEW CAMERA, BLIND SPOT WARNING, PARKING COLLISION WARNING, THE REAR CROSS TRAFFIC WARNING, NOR THE AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING KICKED IN. I WAS GOING AT A VERY LOW SPEED AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT (~1-2 MPH). MY CAR HAD BEEN WARMED UP PRIOR TO GETTING IN IT.I DID NOT SPEND OVER 40K ON A VEHICLE FOR THE THE SAFETY FEATURES TO NOT WORK WHEN YOU NEED THEM TO. I HAVE NOTICED THAT I HAVE ALSO HAD ISSUES WITH MY LANE DEPARTURE WARNING AND THE FORWARD COLLISION WARNING HAS BEEN NOT WORKING 100% OF THE TIME RECENTLY, BUT THAT NEVER BOTHERED ME BEFORE. WHAT IS UPSETTING IS THAT I HAVE ALREADY HAD TO HAVE HONDA REPLACE THE FRONT SENSOR DUE TO MY CAR THROWING CODES (LKAS, ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL & FRONT COLLISION WARNING) NOT FUNCTIONING, AS WELL AS MY BACK DRIVER DOOR LOCK (ALREADY GONE BAD). NOW THIS. MY CAR ISN'T EVEN 2 YEARS OLD.I TOOK MY CAR BY MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP (PRIORITY HONDA OF ROANOKE) ON 12/30/20 WHERE I WAS TOLD TO CONTACT AMERICAN HONDA BECAUSE OF THE RECALL ON THE BCM ON MY CAR AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS MOST LIKELY CONTRIBUTED TO THE ACCIDENT. AFTER CONTACTING AMERICAN HONDA I WAS BASICALLY TOLD THAT IT IS NOT A SAFETY RECALL BUT A "NON-COMPLIANCE" RECALL AND THAT THE SAFETY FEATURES THEY BOAST ABOUT ARE NOT ACTUAL SAFETY FEATURES OF THE CAR AND SHOULD NOT BE RELIED UPON IN ANY CASE. SO, THEY DO NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR VEHICLES. THIS INCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH WORSE AND I AM THANKFUL THAT IT WASN'T, BUT I AM STILL SICKENED OVER THIS! I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW CAR FOR ITS SAFETY FEATURES THAT DON'T WORK, TO BE TOLD BY THE MANUFACTURER THAT THEY ARE NOT LIABLE FOR THEIR PRODUCT NOT WORKING CORRECTLY.
