When I was driving my 98 Honda accord lx . I notice it shuts off itself if hitting a hard bump . Then I noticed online they had folks saying that the ignition switch was beginning to be a big issue . I nearly died after picking my 2 kids up from school the car shut off in the middleof the intersection.it’s even a recall on the insurance app about the same part . Do I need to call Honda myself and I shouldn’t have to pay out of pocket for this . Everything shuts off no lies no throttle until I shift in nuetral to crank vehicle up

TAKATA RECALL? I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE FROM MY CO WORKER WHICH STATED THESE ISSUES WERE ALREADY HAPPENING FOR MONTHS, FIRSTLY THE CLUSTER CLUSTERS INSTRUMENT GAGES DO NOT WORK (REPLACED THEM AND NOTHING HAPPENS) , ONLY THE GAGE LIGHTS TURN ON. THESE INCLUDE THE GAS GAGE, RPM, SPEEDOMETER, TEMP. WHICH IS ANOTHER ISSUE, THE ELECTRICAL ISSUES EVEN THOUGH YOU TRY TO BRIGHTEN THE LIGHTS WITH THE DIM KNOB THEY ARE HARDLY BRIGHTENED ITS HARD TO SEE THE CLOCK TIME OR ANY THING THAT LIGHTS UP TO HELP SEE AT NIGHT, THE INTERIOR LIGHTS DONT WORK, THE HORN DOESNT WORK, CRUISE CONTROL DOESNT WORK. AS IF ALL THESE ARE TIED TOGETHER THRU THE ELECTRICAL WIRING. (CHECKED ALL FUSES AND REPLACED MOST) MY WIND SHIELD LEAKS IN THE TOP CORNERS, THE TRUNK FILLS WITH WATER EVERYONE IT RAINS DUE TO A LEAK. DEFECTS IN THE SEALING MY REAR VIEW MIRROR FELL OFF ON MY WAY TO WORK TODAY AS WELL WHICH CAUSED THE WINDSHIELD TO CRACK AROUND WHERE THE MIRROR WAS. THE HOOD LATCH IS HARD TO CLOSE, I HAVE TO USE PLIERS TO PUSH DOWN THE LATCH BEFORE SHUTTING HOOD, (THIS IS ANOTHER PART I REPLACED WITH THE SAME FACTORY PART NUMBER) IT LOOKS TO BE THE SPRING. BALL JOINTS I AM GUESSING... WHEN BARELY TURNING THE WHEEL EITHER WAY YOU HEAR A GRINDING NOISE LIKE METAL AGAINST METAL. HOWEVER, I WAS TOLD BY A HONDA DEALER MY PARTICULAR MODEL IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL.

I THINK AT THAT TIME, THERE MAY HAVE BEEN SEVERAL THOUSAND MILES IN 2002 WHEN I BEGAN TO USE THE CAR ON MORE ROUTINE BASES. THERE ARE TWO OCCASIONS THAT CAUSE THE ISSUE TO ARISE. WHILE I AM DRIVING, THE STEERING COLUMN WILL LOCK UP CAUSING AN ISSUE TO SHIFT FROM GEAR TO GEAR AND THE MOBILITY OF THE CAR. AS THE STEERING COLUMN WOULD LOCK AND CAUSE THE HORN TO MALFUNCTION AND NOT MAKE A SOUND AND THE LIMIT MY MOBILITY TO PARK THE CAR. MOST STREETS THAT I DRIVE ARE NOT ON AN INCLINE BUT THERE HAVE BEEN FEW OCCASIONS, WHERE IF THE CAR WAS ON A SLIGHT INCLINE, IT WOULD BEGIN TO ROLL. I WOULD USE THE GEAR BRAKES TO PREVENT AN ACCIDENT. MY CAR EXPERIENCED STALLING AT BOTH HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND SLOW SPEED OPERATION. THIS OF COURSE LED TO A LOSS OF THROTTLE RESPONSE AND POWER STEERING, JEOPARDIZING THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE. THE SMELL OF BURNING PLASTIC AND LIGHT SMOKE WERE ALSO EVIDENT COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN DURING THESE EVENTS. THIS STALLING HAD THE EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS AS IF THE KEY HAD BEEN SWITCHED TO THE ACCESSORY POSITION (I.E. POWER WAS LOST TO THE DASH AND THE ENGINE SHUT OFF, BUT RADIO AND OTHER ACCESSORIES STAYED POWERED), INDICATING AN ELECTRICAL FAILURE. THE ENGINE WOULD TURN OVER AND CATCH WHEN THE KEY WAS PUT IN THE "START" POSITION, BUT IT WOULD STALL WHEN THE KEY RETURNED TO THE "ON" POSITION. RESEARCH INDICATED THAT THESE SYMPTOMS MATCHED RECALL 02V120000 EXACTLY. THIS RECALL CALLED FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF A FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH. HONDA DEALER AND HONDA AMERICA BOTH SAID THE CAR HAD ALREADY BEEN SERVICED UNDER THIS RECALL AND THAT THEY WOULD ONLY HONOR THE RECALL IF IT WAS INSPECTED AT A DEALER AT OWNER EXPENSE. WHEN THE OWNER REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH THE PROBLEM WAS RECTIFIED. THE REPLACED PART SHOWED MELTED SOLDER (THAT HAD MELTED OFF OF THE CONTACT AND INTO THE OUTER CASING OF THE SWITCH) AND MELTED PLASTIC AT THE "1G1" TERMINAL OF THE IGNITION SWITCH, EXPLAINING THE SMOKE EVENT. A MULTI-METER ALSO SHOWED INCONSISTENT CONTINUITY BETWEEN THE "1G1" TERMINAL AND THE WIRING HARNESS WHEN THE SWITCH WAS IN THE "ON" POSITION, MATCHING THE DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR RECALL AND EXPLAINING THE STALLING. MY CAR UNDERWENT THE IGNITION SWITCH INTERLOCK RECALL IN 2002. BUT THIS IGNITION SWITCH WAS FAULTY AND AGAIN IN 2011, THE SWITCH FAILED. MY CAR STALLED A FEW TIMES ON THE FREEWAY AND I WAS IN GREAT DANGER OF BEING IN A ACCIDENT. THE SYSTEM WAS WHILE DRIVING THE CAR, IT WOULD IMMEDIATELY CUT OFF THE ENGINE AND IF I PUT IT BACK IN NEUTRAL AND RESTART IT WOULD START FINE. HONDA KNEW ABOUT THE FAULTY SWITCH REPLACED AND NOW IS RECOMMENDING A NEW AND IMPROVED VERSION AT THE OWNERS COST. NEXT, WHILE TRAVELLING ON HIGHWAY ~50MPH AT NIGHT, CAR UNEXPECTEDLY DIED (NO BRAKING INVOLVED) AND MOST, NOT ALL ELECTRIC DIED (EMERGENCY FLASHERS WORKED). NO "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT" EVER CAME ON, BEFORE DASHBOARD BLANKED OUT. IGNITION SWITCH REPLACED IN 2002 WITH NATIONAL RECALL. MECHANIC AT A LOSS. HONDA HEADQUARTERS INITIALLY DENIED A PROBLEM EXISTED. CAR AGAIN STALLED A FEW TIMES WHILE BRAKING TO SLOW DOWN OR COME TO A STOP, BUT ASSUMED IT MIGHT BE "BAD GAS". EVENING OF 8/3/2011 TRAVELLING AT ~50MPH, CAR LOST ALL ELECTRIC 3 TIMES (DASHBOARD BLANKED OUT, BUT HEADLIGHTS WORKED), BUT IMMEDIATELY CAME BACK ON (AS THOUGH IT "BLINKED OFF"), WITHOUT HAVING TO RESTART IT. AFTER PARKING CAR, TOOK KEY OUT OF IGNITION- IT WAS "BURNING HOT". THIS TIME WHEN I CALLED HONDA HEADQUARTERS THEY SAID IT "MIGHT" BE PART OF A "SECOND RECALL", BUT CAR HAD TO BE CHECKED BY HONDA DEALER SERVICE STAFF. IF IT WAS THE IGNITION SWITCH, IT WOULD BE REPLACED FREE. IT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THIS WAS NOT PART OF A NATIONWIDE RECALL. RESULT- IGNITION SWITCH WAS BAD AND WAS REPLACED FREE. I WAS LUCKY I WASN'T KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED IN A BAD CRASH. PLEASE ORDER A NATIONWIDE RECALL- IT COULD SAVE A LIFE OR LIVES.

DEALER SAID THIS REPAIR NOT COVERED BY RECALL AS PART HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED. MECHANIC REPORTS FAULTY SWITCH IS BROWN (BURNED?). DEALER REPLACED SWITCH WITH NEW ONE BUT IS SAME PART THAT FAILED.

ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS MY CAR WOULD NOT START. THIS WOULD HAPPEN OUT OF NOWHERE, SOMETIMES IT WOULD START UP AFTER A FEW MINUTES AND SOMETIMES I WOULD HAVE TO COME BACK AND GET IT. ON ONE OCCASION THE VEHICLE DIED WHILE I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. SHORTLY AFTER THAT I TOOK IT TO A HONDA DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. I PAID $233.27 FOR PARTS AND LABOR. THEY ALSO CHARGED ME TO REPAIR A FEW OTHER THINGS, IN TOTAL I SPENT AROUND $400.00. SINCE THEN MY BROTHER PURCHASED A 1999 HONDA ACCORD AND THEY STARTED HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS. HE FOUND OUT THAT HIS CAR WAS PART OF A RECALL FOR THE IGNITION SWITCH AND HE TOOK HIS CAR TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP AND THEY FIXED IT FOR FREE. I LOOKED ONLINE AND IT SEEMS THAT HONDA ACCORDS FROM 1997-2002 ALL HAVE THIS COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH FAILING. I BELIEVE MY CAR SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. AND I BELIEVE I SHOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR MY EXPENSE IN REPAIRING THE IGNITION SWITCH.

WHEN MY CAR SHUTS OFF, I LOSE ALL POWER AND MY DASH BOARD GOES BLACK (NOT 1 LIGHT IS LIT). I HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO GET OUT OFF TRAFFIC SAFELY, SO I CAN PLACE MY CAR IN PARK AND RESTART IT. MY CAR RESTARTS WITH NO PROBLEMS BUT MY CAR ALSO DIES/CUTS OFF WITHOUT ANY WARNING. I CONTACTED HONDA TODAY AND WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR WAS NOT PART OF THE IGNITION SWITCH RECALL #02-031 BUT THEY SAID THAT IT WAS PART OF THE IGNITION SWITCH INTERLOCK RECALL#03-088. I TOOK MY CAR TO A REPAIR SHOP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE REASON MY CAR IS CUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING IS BECAUSE OF A FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH. I HAVE NOT CORRECTED THE PROBLEM ON MY OWN BECAUSE I FEEL THAT MY CAR SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN RECALL#02-031 AND HONDA SHOULD ABSORB THE COST.IF ALL ELSE FAILS I WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS MYSELF, TO AVOID BEING SERIOUSLY HURT OR INJURING SOMEONE ELSE. MY 1998 HONDA ACCORD LX WHILE DRIVING WOULD TURN ITSELF OFF. THIS OCCURED REPEATEDLY IN CITY DRIVING CONDITIONS AND ALSO ON FREEWAY DRIVING CONDITIONS AT 60 MILES AND ABOVE. WHEN THE ENGINE WOULD TURN OFF, ALL DASH LIGHTS INCLUDING THE GREEN "KEY" SECURITY LIGHT WOULD COME ON. THE CAR WOULD START UP AGAIN IF YOU TURNED THE IGNITION KEY ON, BUT AT 60 MILES AN HOUR, OR CROSSING A BUSY STREET AND LOSING POWER THAT WOULD NOT BE THE FIRST THING ONE WOULD DO AND THE PROBLEM COULD HAVE LED INTO VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENTS. GIVEN THERE WAS NO CODE IN THE COMPUTER, THE REMEDY WAS A HIT AND MISS, MY MECHANIC AFTER HE EXTENSIVELY TEST DROVE MY CAR FOR A WEEK FOUND THAT ON OCCASIONS WHEN HE WAS BEHIND A RED LIGHT WHEN HE TOUCHED THE INGNITION KEY, THE CAR TURNED ITSELF OFF. HE THEN CONNECTED WITH A HONDA MECHANIC AND HE INFORMED HIM THAT THE IGNITION HARNESS HAD A SHORT. WHEN HE WENT TO PURCHASE A NEW HARNESS, THE SUPPLIER (ACCRODING TO WHAT HE TOLD ME) HAD SHARED WITH HIM THAT, "OH YES, WE ALWAYS KEEP A SUPPLY OF THESE HARNESSES, THEY GO OUT A LOT!" GIVEN THE DANGER THIS POSES TO THIS VEHICLE (IT SEEMS THE MODEL WAS PRODUCED FOR SEVERAL YEARS), THERE SHOULD BE SOME WARNING TO OWNERS OF THIS DANGEROUS SITUATION SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE A COMPETENT TECHNICIAN TEST THEIR IGNITION HARNESS AND MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO SHORTS.

MY 1998 HONDA ACCORD HAD THE IGNITION SWITCH RECALL PERFORMED WITH THE RECALL CAME OUT. IN NOVEMBER 2008, I STARTED TO NOTICE STARTING ISSUES. THE DASH LIGHT WOULD FLICKER. AFTER TRYING A COUPLE OF TIMES THE CAR WOULD START. THE CAR RAN FINE UNTIL AROUND JANUARY 2009 WHEN THE CAR ENGINE SHUT DOWN WITHOUT WARNING WHILE STOPPING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK. THE CAR WAS ABLE TO START BACK UP IMMEDIATELY. ONE DAY WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE IN FEB. 2009, THE ENGINE RPM STARTED DROPPING AND I COULD NOT ACCELERATE TO GET MORE SPEED. I PULLED INTO THE EMERGENCY LANE AND STOPPED THE CAR WHILE THE CAR WAS STILL ON AND IN DRIVE POSITION. ONCE I STOPPED, I COULD ACCELERATE AGAIN. ANOTHER TIME THE DASH LIGHTS FLICKER WHEN I TRIED TO START THE CAR. THE CAR DID NOT START UNTIL AFTER A COUPLE OF TRIES. EACH TIME, THESE PROBLEMS OCCURRED, I CHECK IF IT WAS RELATED TO A CERTAIN CONDITION (WEATHER, TEMPERATURE, ETC). THE PROBLEMS HAPPENED RANDOMLY. AFTER READING VARIOUS COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE AND OTHER SITES, I STARTED TO TRY TO REPRODUCE THE DASH BOARD FLICKERING JUST BY TURNING THE CAR ON BUT NOT STARTING THE ENGINE. I WAS ABLE TO REPRODUCE THE FLICKERING BY SLOWLY TURNING THE KEY TOWARD THE OFF POSITION. I TALKED TO HONDA HEADQUARTERS AND THEY TOLD ME THE RECALL WAS ALREADY ACCOMPLISHED AND THE MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEY CAN NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. MY CAR NOW 142250 MILES. I TALKED WITH THE DEALERSHIP THAT I HAD THE RECALL DONE AND THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I TALKED WITH ANOTHER DEALERSHIP WHERE I GET MY MAINTENANCE DONE NOW. THEY SAID THAT IT WOULD BE $100 TO RUN A DIAGNOSTIC ON THE CAR. I TOLD THEM WHAT WOULD GUARANTEE ME THAT THE PROBLEM WOULD BE FOUND IF THE CAR WAS RUNNING FINE AT THE TIME. MY STEPDAUGHTER'S CAR WOULD SHUT DOWN WITH NO WARNING. BEING AN AIRCRAFT MECHANIC I SPENT A LOT OF TIME TROUBLE SHOOTING THIS INTERMITTENT PROBLEM AND WAS QUITE SURE THIS WAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM WHICH CAN BE THE HARDEST PROBLEM TO NARROW DOWN SO I CHANGE QUITE A FEW OF THE COMMON PART AND TUNED UP THE VEHICLE I CHANGED THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS: DISTRIBUTOR CAP ROTOR, TIMING BELTS WIRES CLEANED THE FUEL INJECTION AND A FEW OTHER COMPONENTS YET THE VEHICLE WOULD MYSTERIOUSLY SHUT DOWN. GOING IN TO FLORIDA WINTER THE PROBLEM SEEM TO GO AWAY HOWEVER I WAS NOT SURPRISED ONCE IT WARMED-UP THE PROBLEM STARTED AGAIN AND MORE FREQUENTLY. I DID AN INTERNET SEARCH AND FOUND THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ON THE IGNITION SWITCH FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM. I CALLED HONDA AMERICA AND THE INFORMED ME THE RECALL HAD BEEN PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE I WAS LESS THAN CONVINCED. I FINALLY SWITCHED VEHICLE FOR A WEEK TO TROUBLE SHOOT THE PROBLEM. HAVING TO MAIN SUSPECT IN MINE THE IGNITION SWITCH AND THE MAIN RELAY I WENT TO THE LOCAL JUNK YARD TO SEE IF I COULD FIND THESE TWO COMPONENTS WITH OUT SPENDING. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 HONDA. THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED A DUPLICATE FAILURE PER NHTSA RECALL #02V120000 REGARDING THE IGNITION SWITCH. WHEN THE IGNITION WAS ENGAGED THE VEHICLE DIDN'T START NORMALLY, THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AND OCCASIONALLY STARTED AGAIN. DURING THE LAST 6 MONTHS I BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY IGNITION LOCKING UP AND CAR WOULD NOT START & OCCASIONALLY THE CAR WOULD STOP RUNNING WHILE IN MOTION FOR NO REASON. THE DASH LIGHTS WOULD ALL FLASH AND THEN LOCK-UP & DIE. I CHECKED ONLINE AND DISCOVERED THERE HAD BEEN TWO RECALLS ON MY 98 HONDA ACCORD LX, IGNITION SWITCH AND INTERLOCK. I PHONED MY LOCAL DEALER, HONDA OF OCALA AND THEY GAVE ME AN APPT. FOR 10/20/06. THEY TOOK A LOOK AT MY CAR AND THEN TRIED TO SELL ME OTHER SERVICES. I ASKED THAT THEY ONLY FIX THE TWO RECALLS AS SCHEDULED. I WAITED FOR 1 1/2 HOURS AND THEN WAS INFORMED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS BAD BUT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $205.00 IF I WANTED IT FIXED BECAUSE IT HAD ALREADY BEEN FIXED. THEY COULDN'T TELL ME WHERE OR WHEN THIS WAS. I REFUSED TO PAY FOR A RECALL THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DONE FREE OF CHARGE. AFTER MAKING ME WAIT ANOTHER 35 MINUTES MY CAR WAS RETURNED. I ASKED ABOUT THE INTERLOCK RECALL, HAD IT BEEN FIXED? HE SAID NO YOU'LL HAVE TO CALL AND MAKE ANOTHER APPT. THIS APPT. WAS FOR BOTH RECALLS. THEY HAD MY CAR FOR OVER 2 HRS AND DID NOTHING. I WENT HOME AND CALLED HONDA OF AMERICA. I SPOKE WITH A REP THAT TOOK MY COMPLAINT. ON 10/23 I WAS TOLD BY BOTH REPS THAT MY ONLY OPTION WAS PAYING LABOR AND GETTING IT DONE AT HONDA OF OCALA. I DID NOT WANT TO RETURN TO THIS SPECIFIC DEALERSHIP DUE TO THEM TREATING ME SO MISERABLY AT THE FIRST APPT. I HAVE NO RECORDS THAT THIS RECALL WAS EVER FIXED. THE CAR IS A 1998 HONDA ACCORD LX V-6 COUPE W/ AUTO TRANS. AND NOW HAS 65700 MILES ON IT. WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS THE ENGINE SOMETIMES DIED. WHEN THIS HAPPENED THE STEERING BECAME DIFFICULT AND THE BRAKES DID NOT FUNCTION WELL. MOST TIMES AFTER THE CAR CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP I WAS ABLE TO RESTART IT. I AM A FIRST HAND OWNER OF A 1998 HONDA ACCORD EX COUPE, THE CAR HAS EXHIBITED FAILURE OF THE IGNITION SWITCH SINCE 2 MONTHS (MARCH 2006) AGO. I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR FOR TWO YEARS AND HAVE HAD TWO AXLES REPLACED, AS WELL AS ROTORS AND BREAKS REPLACED TWICE. I PARKED MY CAR IN MY DRIVEWAY FRIDAY NIGHT AND TOOK THE KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION THE CAR WAS STILL IN DRIVE. THE CAR ROLLED DOWN MY DRIVEWAY, INTO THE YARD, AND HIT A TREE WITH NO ONE IN THE VEHICLE. SINCE THERE WAS NO KEY IN THE IGNITION THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. LAST SPRING (4/25/03) , I TOOK MY 1998 HONDA ACCORD IN TO THE DEALER FOR BRAKES AND WHILE THERE, THEY FIXED THE IGNITION SWITCH WHICH HAD BEEN RECALLED. NTIL THEN, I HAD NEVER HAD A PROBLEM STARTING MY CAR. AFTER THE RECALL REPLACEMENT, I NOW HAVE STARTING PROBLEMS! IT SEEMS THAT MY CAR WILL CRANK NORMALLY BUT NOT TURN OVER. IT APPEARS NOT TO BE GETTING FUEL. THE CAR WILL THEN START NORMALLY AFTER AN HOUR. I HAVE HAD THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY CAN NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I HAVE HAD THE BATTERY AND THE ALTERNATOR REPLACED BUT I STILL HAVE THIS PROBLEM. STRANGELY ENOUGH, IT DOES NOT SEEM TO HAPPEN IN THE COLD WEATHER, ONLY ON HOT DAYS. I AM TOLD BY THE DEALER AND PRIVATE MECHANICS THAT THEY NEED TO SEE IT WHEN IT WILL NOT START IN ORDER TO DIAGNOSE & FIX THE PROBLEM. AS I HAVE STATED ABOVE, IT WILL START AFTER AN HOUR OR SO, IT WILL START BEFORE I CAN HAVE IIT TOWED TO THE DEALER. I HAVE 39,963 MILES ON THIS CAR AND I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER. 1998 HONDA ACCORD WAS TURNED OFF AND KEY REMOVED WHILE VEHICLE WAS IN DRIVE. AFTER LEAVING THE CAR, IT ROLLED BACKWARDS INTO A GUARDRAIL, CAUSING DAMAGE TO LEFT REAR BUMPER AND LEFT REAR PANEL. THIS OCCURRED ON 2/11/04. TWO DAYS LATER WE RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE FROM HONDA ACKNOWLEDGING IGNITION FAILURES THAT COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE SUCH INCIDENTS. WE HAVE CONTACTED HONDA AND THEY ARE "DRAGGING THEIR HEELS" TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE COSTS TO HAVE THIS REPAIRED.*AK

HORN WORKS ONLY ON RARE OCCASIONS, PRIMARILY WHEN WHEEL IS TURNED SHARPLY TO EITHER DIRECTION. DEALER HAS STATED THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM, BUT IT WILL TAKE SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS TO FIX, WHICH INCLUDES REPLACING PART OF THE DRIVER AIR BAG ASSEMBLY. OVER TIME, THE PROBLEM HAS WORSENED, AND DEALER SAYS IT IT LIKELY THE HORN WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL COMPLETELY.*AK DUE TO FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES, I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX, THUS I NO LONGER HAVE A WORKING HORN. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE AIR BAG MAY ALSO FAIL IN AN ACCIDENT. I NOTICE THAT THERE HAVE BEEN AT LEAST 5 OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, YET NO INVESTIGATION OR RECALL HAS BEEN INITIATED. I HAVE A 1998 HONDA ACCORD EX COUPE V6. I RECENTLY HAD THE CABLE REEL ASSEMBLY FAIL ON THIS VEHICLE (PN: 77900-S84-A22). THIS IS THE PART THAT ATTACHES THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS FROM THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE REST OF THE CAR. THIS PART FAILED CAUSING ALL OF MY SWITCHES ON MY STEERING WHEEL TO FAIL AND THERE IS A HIGH LIKELYHOOD THAT THE AIRBAG WAS INOPERABLE ALSO. THE HONDA DEALER TOLD ME THAT THESE PARTS ALMOST ALLWAYS FAIL ON 1998 HONDA ACCORDS. THIS PART IS CRITICAL TO THE OPERATION OF THE AIRBAG, AND THIS CREATES A SAFETY ISSUE. SERVICE MANAGER AT DEALER DECIDED IT WAS NOT THE SWITCH THIS TIME BEFORE EVEN LOOKING AT THE CAR. CURRENTLY THE CAR INTERMITTENTLY WILL NOT START. THIS COMPLAINT IS SIMILAR TO INVESTIGATION NUMBER PE 03-014. MY WIFE'S 1998 HONDA ACCORD (4 CYLINDER WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) ROLLED AWAY FROM THE SPOT WHERE SHE HAD PARKED IT. APPARENTLY SHE HAD LEFT THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE, BUT WAS ABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION. WHEN SHE RETURNED FROM HER ERRAND, THE CAR WAS NO LONGER IN THE PARKING SPOT WHERE SHE HAD LEFT IT. THE CAR HAD ROLLED ABOUT 75 FEET AWAY, SOMEHOW MANAGING TO MISS SEVERAL OTHER CARS IN THE PARKING LOT. THANKFULLY, SHE AND OUR BABY WEREN'T HALFWAY OUT THE CAR DOOR WHEN THE CAR ROLLED AWAY. I VERIFIED THAT THE KEY CAN BE REMOVED WITH THE SHIFTER IN DRIVE. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE HONDA DEALER HERE IN COLORADO SPRINGS, AND THEY INDICATED THAT THERE MAY BE A MECHANICAL PROBLEM IN THE IGNITION SWITCH, BUT THAT IT ISN'T COVERED BY A WARRANTY OR RECALL. THEY ALSO SAID IT WOULD BE PRETTY EXPENSIVE TO FIX SINCE THE ELECTRICAL PART OF THE IGNITION SWITCH WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AS WELL AS THE MECHANICAL PART AND THE ELECTRICAL PART OF THE SWITCH HAS AN ANTI-THEFT FEATURE THAT READS A COMPUTER CHIP IN THE KEY AND THAT THE SYSTEM WOULD HAVE TO BE REPROGRAMMED (INCLUDING THE REMOTE CONTROLS FOR THE DOORS...). THE CAR HAD ABOUT 60,000 MILES ON IT WHEN WE FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM. WE DON'T RECALL THE EXACT DATE OF WHEN IT HAPPENED, BUT IT WAS DURING THE SUMMER OF 2002 WHEN WE FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM. THE MEETING TOOK PLACE ON 3/24/03 AND I EXPLAINED THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH MY 2003 HYBRID AND MY 1998 ACCORD. THE PRIMARY CONCERN ABOUT THE ACCORD WAS THE RECALL OF ELECTRICAL PORTION OF THE IGNITION SWITCH. NORM REEVES HAD CLAIMED TO INSTALL A COMPLETE IGNITION SWITCH ON THE INSTRUCTIONS OF AMERICAN HONDA. AFTER THE ALLEGED REPAIR, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO STALL. I PROPOSED THE FOLLOWING: (1) I BUY THE NEW PART, (2) I WITNESS THE INSTALLATION, AND (3) I RECEIVE THE PART REMOVED. MR. CATHERINE PROMISED TO GET BACK TO ME IN A COUPLE OF DAYS. THIS NEVER HAPPENED. I BOUGHT A NEW PART FROM ANOTHER DEALER AND HAD IT INSTALLED BY AN INDEPENDENT HONDA MECHANIC ON 5/9/03. HIS OPINION WAS THAT NOTHING HAD BEEN DONE AND THAT THE PART REMOVED SHOWED WEAR UNLIKELY TO OCCUR IN THE SHORT INTERVAL. HE ALSO STATED THAT NORM REEVES COULD NOT HAVE REPLACED THE COMPLETE IGNITION, SINCE THAT TYPE OF REPAIR WOULD HAVE NECESSITATED THE RE-PROGRAMMING OF THE KEYS. FURTHER, HONDAS WRITTEN SERVICE BULLETIN 02-031 CLEARLY INSTRUCTS THE DEALER: CENTER-PUNCH A COMPLETION MARK ABOVE THE EIGHTH CHARACTER OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT VIN. NO SUCH MARK APPEARS ON MY VEHICLE. IN VIEW OF THE EVIDENCE, I NOW BELIEVE THAT HONDA HAS ENGAGED IN A FRAUDULENT IMPLEMENTATION OF THE RECALL ORDER. TO FURTHER PROVE THIS ALLEGATION, I SEEK THE ASSISTANCE OF NHTSA TO DETERMINE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE HAND-WRITTEN NUMBERS ON THE ELECTRICAL SWITCH PART. I HAVE PHOTOGRAPHS OF BOTH THE ORIGINAL PART (35130-S84-A01) AND THE REPLACEMENT PART (35130-S84-305). FURTHER, I NOTE THAT THE RAISED PLASTIC NUMBERS ON THE PARTS DIFFER BY ONE DIGIT. I BELIEVE THAT NHTSA SHOULD ASCERTAIN THE SIGNIFICANCE OF BOTH THE RAISED PLASTIC NUMBERS AND THE HAND-WRITTEN NUMBERS TO DETERMINE WHETHER A NEW INVESTIGATION SHOULD BE INITIATED. *JB
