On this vehicle, it is common knowledge that the V6 models have an issue related to the transmission (referred to as the automatic transaxle by Honda) where the system was not reworked to account for the extra torque put out by the more powerful V6 engine causing it to strip and shred portions of the gearing causing gear slippage, rough idling, and other similar issues usually occuring sometimes around or after the 80k mile mark. Upon finding out about this, I did some research and Honda's "solution" offered was that transmissions could be swapped for rebuilt ones salvaged off of other vehicles brought in for similar issues but there have also been reports of these rebuilt transmissions beginning to fail after they reach an additional 80k miles proving the issue was not truly resolved. On top of this, a formal recall was never made, owners were not made aware of this, and the offer was only made available to those who brought their vehicles in for this issues within a certain number of years and certain of mileage after their purchase which is very unsafe, anti-consumer, and shows a lack of care and responsibility on their part especially since this issue affects not only V6 Accord models, but also affects Ridgeline, Odyssey, and CR-V models that use the same engine and transmission combo. It should also be noted that, due to the lack of notice or action regarding this issue on the manufacturer's part, it has never been resolved on my model as the prior owners never knew of this issue when they bought the car new but the Honda owned dealership was happy enough to quote me a $1406 repair the last time I inquired about this issue.
I had this car for a few weeks with 120K miles on it and the transmission died on me while driving and almost got hit with a big rig. Lucky the big rig has enough distance to slam that break. This car needs attention and recall with the transmission. Been reading a lot of faulty transmission for this model and no recall. Not sure if a crash or fatality will occur first before they will initiate a recall. Honda is a reliable company but has this many complaints and no recall has been initiated.
Car keeps going out of line when steering wheel gets lose after bumbs. Fixed rack n pinon and steering wheel pump 2x already!
I HAVE BEEN FAMILIAR WITH THIS CAR AND MANY OTHER SIMILAR HONDA'S OF THIS YEAR AND EVERY SINGLE ONE INCLUDING THE LOWER MILE ONES HAVE NEEDED A TRANSMISSION REBUILD OR REPLACEMENT. THE J30 TRANSMISSION IS INEPT TO DO ITS JOB AND THE STRAIN ON IT FROM THE V6 VTEC RENDERS IT USELESS QUICKLY. I STARTED TO EXPERIENCE DELAYED GEAR ENGAGEMENT, BOTH ON UP SHIFTS AND DOWNSHIFTS AS WELL AS TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKAGE WHICH WAS INITIALLY DIAGNOSED AS A BAD LEFT SIDE AXLE SEAL. WHEN THE MECHANIC PROCEEDED TO FIX THE AXLE SEAL, HE THEN RE DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS BAD BEARINGS AND A FAULTY TRANSMISSION, A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2000 & 2001 ACCORDS. SINCE THEN I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO SEVERAL OTHER MECHANICS AND TRANSMISSION SPECIALISTS FOR A SECOND OPINION, WHO HAVE REACHED THE VERY SAME CONCLUSION/DIAGNOSIS. A VAST MAJORITY OF THE TRANSMISSIONS ON THE 2000 AND 2001 ACCORDS HAVE FAILED OR ARE HAVING PROBLEMS. THE SCARY PART IS ALL THE TRANSMISSION SHOPS ARE FAMILIAR WITH THIS ISSUE, SOME OF THEM SEE AN ACCORD OR AN ODYSSEY (SIMILAR PROBLEM) ONCE A WEEK! FROM MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE/INVESTIGATION THE COMMON CONSENSUS IS; THE HONDA TRANSMISSIONS FROM THE LATE 90'S WERE BULLETPROOF BECAUSE THEY WERE SPECIFICALLY BUILT FOR THE CARS FROM THE 90'S. HOWEVER, WHEN HONDA UPGRADED THE SIZE OF THEIR ENGINES AND POWER, HONDA USED THE SAME 90'S TRANSMISSIONS, WHICH IN THE LONG RUN COULD NO LONGER HANDLE THE LARGER ENGINE CAPACITY OR THE EXTRA POWER AND EVENTUALLY FAIL. IN 2006 HONDA WAS HIT WITH A CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT FOR THE FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS. HONDA SETTLED THE MATTER OUT OF COURT BY EXTENDING THE TRANSMISSION WARRANTY TO 93 MONTHS OR 109,000 MILES. HOWEVER, HONDA NEVER CORRECTED THE PROBLEM BY REDESIGNING THE TRANSMISSIONS OR PROVIDED A FIX. INSTEAD, HONDA SIMPLY REPLACED THE OLD FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS WITH NEW TRANSMISSIONS THAT STILL HAD THE SAME FAULTY DESIGN. I THOUGHT MAYBE WHEN THEY DID THE TRANSMISSION OIL CHANGE IT MIRACULOUSLY FIXED THE PROBLEM BUT A FEW DAYS LATER I HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR AND I HAVE BEEN CHECKING MY TRANSMISSION AND MOTOR OIL EVERY 3 TO 5 DAYS AND REFILLING BOTH CAUSE IT SEAMS BOTH ARE LEAKING. I FEEL THAT THE MANUFACTURER DIDN'T PUT THE TIME OR EFFORT TO CHECK WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION CAUSE THEY WOULD HAVE FOUND THAT IT IS IN FACT LEAKING OIL. ALSO, NOW THE SRS LIGHT IS ON AND THEY SAY THE SEAT BELT HAS TO REPLACED, AS WELL AS NOW THE ALTERNATOR AND TENSIONER ARE BEING REPALCED ($600 JOB!). BASED ON SOME OTHER COMPLAINTS, IT SEEMS THE TWO ARE RELATED, AS WELL AS THE ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS BEING A RESULT OF THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS.

WHEN I DEMANDED THE SERVICE MANAGER AND THEIR TRANSMISSION TECH MEET ME ONE MORNING I DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM AND THE TECH KNEW EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS AND THAT A NEW TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE INSTALLED. AFTER THEY PUT GOD KNOWS WHAT IN IT I TOOKS IT BACK COMPLAINING OF A NOISE THEY SAID THEY HAD IT ON THE LIFT LISTENED TO IT AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING EXCEPT TIRE NOISE, THEY THING BROKE RIGHT IN THERE PARKING LOT WHEN WE WENT TO PICK IT UP. I JUST LOOKED AT THE JERK MANAGER AND SAID TO HIM " COULDN'T FIND NOTHING WRONG, DON'T EVER GO HICKING THERE ARE RATTLESNAKES THAT MAKE LESS NOISE THAN THIS TRANSMISSION DID AND WE DON'T NEED TO LOOSE ANYMORE LIARS ON OUR LITTLE PLANET NOW DO WE?!!!!". HE HAD NO RESPONSE. WELL NOW TRANSMISSION # 3 IS GETTING READY TO BITE THE DIRT, HAS BEEN SERVICED EVERY 30,000 MILES AND NEEDING REPLACED WITH ONLY 118,000 MILES ON VEHICLE, 68,000 SINCE LAST ONE WAS PUT IN. IT WILL BE THE ABSOLUTE COLDEST DAY IN HELL BEFORE I EVER DARKEN HONDAS DOORS AGAIN.

I TOOK IT TO THE HONDA DEALER AND THEY SAID I HAD TOO MUCH TRANSMISSION FLUID IN IT. THEY CLEANED THE FILTER, AND SENT IT BACK. IT WAS STILL DOING THE SAME THING. I TOOK IT BACK AND THEY MADE SOME ADJUSTMENT, AND IT RAN SOMEWHAT OKAY. SEVERAL MONTHS LATER IT BEGAN TO DO IT AGAIN. I TOOK IT SOMEWHERE ELSE AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS SOMETHING ELSE, AND THAT THE PREVIOUS YEAR THERE WAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ISSUED ON THE CAR. I WAS 2-3 THOUSAND MILES OVER THE EXTENSION AT THAT POINT. I KNEW THE TRANSMISSION WAS BAD THE YEAR BEFORE. THE CAR WOULD NOT RUN RIGHT AFTER THAT. DEALER KNOWS THEY WERE IN THE WRONG AND THEY WERE VERY RUDE WITH ME. THERE HAS TO BE SOMETHING I CAN DO. I CAN'T AFFORD $4000.00 FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION RIGHT NOW. HONDA REPLACED TRANSMISSION UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY IN MARCH OF 2005 AFTER REQUIRING ME TO SPEND A $100 BUCKS TO SERVICE THE OLD ONE PRIOR TO DIAGNOSTICS. REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION JERKS AND MAKES ALL KINDS OF NOISE WHEN PUT IN REVERSE AND HIT THE GAS. LOCAL HONDA DEALER (HUGHES HONDA IN WARNER ROBINS, GA) TRIES TO LINK IT TO THE SOME BRAKE PAD ALIGNMENT NON-SENSE IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET ANOTHER $130 OUT OF ME. I TOLD THE SERVICE MANAGER TO CHANGE THE PADS WITH THE AGREEMENT BEING THE DEALERSHIP WOULD ABSORB THE COST IF THE TRANSMISSION NOISE WAS NOT FIXED. THEN THE PADS THEY JUST TOLD ME WERE WORN OUT ALL OF A SUDDEN HAD TONS OF LIFE LEFT. THE CAR WITH THE SAME BRAKE COMPONENTS AND PADS DID NOT MAKE THE NOISE UNTIL AFTER THE NEW TRANSMISSION WAS INSTALLED. HONDA HAS A REAL PROBLEM AND SHOULD BE FORCED VIA RECALL TO ADDRESS ANY AND ALL TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS OR BUY THE CAR BACK.

IN 9-25-03 I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE I WAS ABLE TO REMOVE MY KEY FROM THE IGNITION WITHOUT THE CAR IN PARK. WAS TOLD THE SWITCH INSIDE THE CENTER CONSOLE FAILED BECAUSE SODA WAS SPILLED. I WOULD HAVE TO PAY TO REPLACE IT. I ASKED IF IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE, AND WAS TOLD NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT. ON JULY 13 2004 CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. CAR HAD SMOKE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH, AS WELL AS TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKING. HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. REQUESTED THEY CHECK THE IGNITION ISSUE. ALSO, NEXT DAY I RECEIVED A CALL, STATING THAT TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED. I ASKED ABOUT THE IGNITION ISSUE, AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY FORGOT TO LOOK AT IT. I INSISTED IT BE LOOKED AT,AND TOLD THEM WHAT HAPPENED THE LAST TIME AT ANOTHER DEALERSHIP. I WAS AWARE OF A RECALL ON THE 1999 MODEL, AND THAT OTHER PEOPLE WITH SAME MAKE & MODEL HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM. *AK

HE SAID IT WAS LEAKING FLUID OUT THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TRANSMISSION AND ALL HE COULD DO WOULD BE TO FILL IT UP WITH THE SPECIAL FLUID THAT HONDA USES. SO $80.00 BUCKS LATER I GOT SOME FLUID IN IT AND THEN CALLED THE LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP TO ASK WHY MY 2000 ACCORD THAT I PAID $25,000.00 HAD A BAD TRANSMISSION AFTER ONLY 72,000 MILES. I WAS TOLD THAT ,WELL THERE HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH THE 2000 ACCORD AUTO TRANSMISSIONS. IT APPARENTLY WAS A KNOWN DEFECT IN 2000 ACCORD V6 MODELS. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED. IN AUG 2000 THE CAR WOULD NOT START. IT WAS NOT A BATTERY PROBLEM AS LIGHTS, ETC. WORKED. I TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO START THE CAR & UPON TURNING THE IGNITION HAD NO RESPONSE. NONE OF THE DASH LIGHTS INDICATING ENGINE TROUBLE REMAINED ON, ALTHOUGH THEY DID INTIALLY COME ON & THEN GO OUT. I LET THE CAR SIT FOR 15-20 MINS AT WHICH TIME I THEN WAS ABLE TO START THE CAR. THIS PROBLEM HAS NOT YET REPEATED ITSELF.

DEALER HAS STATED A TEC BULLENTIN IS OUT AND HONDA IS WORKING ON FIX, HOWEVER A CALL TO AMERICA HONDA'S CONSUMER AFFAIRS (1-800-999-1009) AND NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW ABOUT THE PORBLEM.*AK
TRANSMISSION VIBRATES IN THE 1000-2000 R.P.M. RANGE, AND MOST NOTICABLE AT 1200 AND 1800 RPM. THE TRANSMISSION ALSO EXHIBITS A RANDOM BUT VERY NOTICEABLE CLUNKING NOISE WHEN SHIFTED INTO REVERSE.*AK

SPEEDOMETER IS NOT ACCURATE. IT APPEARS TO BE FROM 7 TO 10 MPH OFF FROM SURROUNDING TRAFFIC. DEALER CLAIMS IT IS WITHIN THE 10% ALLOWABLE DIFFERENCE. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. THEY TELL US WHEN IT READS 65 WE ARE ACTUALLING GOING 60. THEY HAVE NOT PROVIDED ANY DOCUMENTATION TO SUPPORT THE INACCURACY. *AK
WITHIN FIVE DAYS OF PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE, OWNER NOTICED VEHICLE SHAKING AND SHUDDERING AT 25 MPH AND 40 MPH UNDER LIGHT THROTTLE. THIS CONDITION WAS AND IS REPEATABLE. PROBLEM IS ALWAYS PRESENT AT AFOREMENTIONED SPEEDS. DEALER WAS NOTIFIED, AND OWNER WAS INFORMED THAT DEALER WOULD CONTACT MANUFACTURER REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. OWNER WAS CONTACTED 01/04/00 BY DEALER, AND TOLD THAT MANUFACTURER WILL BE SHIPPING A COMPLETE TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY TO REPLACE FACTORY INSTALLED TRANSMISSION. DEALER STATED THAT UPON THEIR RECEIPT OF TRANSMISSION, THEY WILL CONTACT OWNER TO SCHEDULE 2-3 DAY R&R OF DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION. OWNER IS CONCERNED ABOUT POTENTIAL FUTURE POWERTRAIN FAILURES DUE TO THE COMPLEXITY AND SCOPE OF THIS PROCEEDURES WHICH WILL TAKE PLACE AT DEALERSHIP. OWNER WOULD EXPECT EXTENDED POWERTRAIN WARRANTY FOR THIS VEHICLE. *AK
WITH THE CAR IS PUT INTO REVERSE GEAR, THIS CAUSES THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TO MAKE A LOUD METAL TO METAL POPPING NOISE. *AK
VEHICLE RUNS WELL BUT EVERY TIME YOU INITIALLY START UP AND BACK UP IT JOLTS YOU AS YOU RELEASE THE BRAKES AND START MOVING. IT IS MORE NOTICEABLE IN REVERSE THAN DRIVE. IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO THE DEALER THREE TIMES BUT THEY REFUSE TO INVESTIGATE SAYING THE MANUFACTURER IS WORKING ON IT. I FEAR THE DRIVETRAIN WILL FALL APART WHILE DRIVING CAUSING A MAJOR ACCIDENT.
A LOUD, MECHANICAL "THUNK" IS HEARD WHEN THE CAR IS PUT INTO REVERSE - THE SOUND COMES AFTER THE CAR ROLLS BACK 2-3 FEET. IT IS VERY DISCONCERTING. THE DEALER SAYS THAT THE PROBLEM IS "UNDER INVESTIGATION" BY HONDA AND THAT A TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT MAY BE NECESSARY. THEY CAN DO NOTHING UNTIL HONDA FIGURES OUT HOW TO HANDLE IT. I ASSUME THE CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE ??? *AK
WHILE IN REVERSE AND TRAVELING BACKWARDS THERE IS A LOUD CLUNK AND THUMP FROM UNDER THE CAR. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT HONDA WAS INVESTIGATING THE PROBLEM AND NO FIX WAS MADE TO MY CAR.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION EMITS NOISE ("THUNK") WHILE VEHICLE IS MOVING IN REVERSE, ACCOMPANIED BY ABRUPT SHIFT AS IF NOT FULLY ENGAGED IN GEAR. *AK
