Subframe on passenger side is rusted through creating a safety hazard. I was unaware of this issue on 1999-2002 Honda Accords but when researching for the cause of a noise coming from the front end found plenty of articles but no corrective action from Honda.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HONDA ACCORD. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS AT AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE SUBFRAME WAS SEVERELY CORRODED. THE AIR CONDITIONING CONDENSATION LINE DRIPPED FLUID ON TOP OF THE KEY SUSPENSION COMPONENT, WHICH CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS DEEMED UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000.

RIGHT SIDE SUB-FRAME, REAR BEAM, K FRAME IS COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH FROM A/C DRAIN LINE INSTALLED TO DRAIN DIRECTLY ONTO THE SUBFRAME. THIS CAUSES THE STEERING TO FLEX SUBSTANTIALLY AND ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC COULD CAUSE THE CAR STEERING TO FAIL CATASTROPHICALLY OR COULD ALLOW THE MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION TO FALL OUT OF THE CAR. ANTI-SWAY BAR IS COMPLETELY BROKEN AWAY FROM THE FRAME. FOUND BY MECHANIC CHECKING MY CAR TO DETERMINE WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE STEERING AND CORNERING.

THE SUB-FRAME ON PASSENGER'S SIDE OF CAR HAS SIGNIFICANT RUST THROUGH, PRESUMABLY DUE TO A POORLY PLACED AIR CONDITIONER CONDENSATE DRAIN, WHICH DRIPS WATER ON THE AFFECTED COMPONENT. THIS IS A SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW. THE TOP PART OF THE COMPONENTS IS MOSTLY EATEN AWAY BY RUST. THE PART HAS NOT BROKEN, YET, BUT IT EVENTUALLY WILL. THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE SAME COMPONENT IS UNAFFECTED. THE REMAINDER OF THE CAR IS IN GOOD SHAPE FOR ITS AGE.

THIS IS A 2000 ACCORD AND HAVE SEARCHED THE WEB AND FOUND MANY OTHER ACCORD VEHICLES ( 1999-2002) WITH THE SAME CONDITION. HONDA NEEDS TO STEP UP AND TAKE CARE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS AND REPLACE THE SUB FRAMES ON THE AFFECTED ACCORD VEHICLES.

OBVIOUSLY IT MAKES NO SENSE TO SPEND THE $2,500+TAX THAT THE DEALER PROPOSES, AS THE CAR IS BARELY WORTH THAT MUCH. THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW IN 1998-2002 HONDAS AS THE AIR CONDITIONER DRIPS RIGHT ONTO THIS PART OF THE SUBFRAME. THE INCONTROVERTIBLE EVIDENCE IS THE DOZENS OF OTHER COMPLAINTS FOR SUBFRAME RUST FILED HERE WITH THE NHTSA AND ELSEWHERE - ALL ON THE PASSENGER SIDE - AS WELL AS THE FACT THAT HONDA CHANGED THE DESIGN ON THE 2003 MODELS. I DON'T KNOW WHY THE NHTSA IS WAITING TO FORCE A RECALL?? WHAT IF I HADN'T GOTTEN THE MAINTENANCE FOR ANOTHER FEW MONTHS?? WHAT COULD HAVE POTENTIALLY HAPPENED?? COULD I HAVE LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR AS THE BOTTOM PARTIALLY FELL OUT?? THIS IS A SERIOUS INJURY, IF NOT DEATH, WAITING TO HAPPEN! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!??? HE TOLD ME THAT MY FRONT PASSENGER SEAT SUBFRAME WAS COMPLETELY ROTTED OUT DUE TO RUST (THE RUST WAS NOT MENTIONED WHATSOEVER DURING THE CAR'S INSPECTION ONLY 6 MONTHS PRIOR) AND WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. CHECKED ONLINE AND IT SEEMS TO BE A WIDELY PREVALENT ISSUE WITH GEN 6 ACCORDS (98 - 02). I'VE LIVED IN A SNOWY CITY FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR, BUT THERE IS NO APPRECIABLE RUST ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE CAR. ONLY IN THIS ONE SPOT, WHICH IS DIRECTLY UNDER THE A/C DRAIN. HONDA CHANGED THE LOCATION OF THE A/C DRAIN IN 2003 (WITH THEIR 7TH GEN ACCORDS), AND THIS PROBLEM IS NOT AN ISSUE ON THOSE CARS. HONDA HAS SAID THAT IT IS JUST A COINCIDENCE, BUT THEY ARE BETTER OFF PUTTING OUT A RECALL AND COVERING THE COST OF REPLACING THESE FRONT PASSENGER SUBFRAMES THAN HAVING TO PAY FOR A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT ONCE SOMEBODY IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED BECAUSE OF A ROTTING SUBFRAME. WHEN I WAS READY PARK THE CAR AND SWITCH OFF THE IGNITION, THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WAY TOO FAST AND HIT THE BUILDING IN FRONT. I WAS DRIVING INTO THE PARKING SPACE AT LESS THAN AROUND 10 MPH AS I HAD TO MAKE 3 TURNS WITHIN 100 FEET BEFORE COMING INTO VACANT PARKING SPACE. MY LEG WAS ALSO IN THE BREAK PEDAL AS I MADE THOSE TURNS AFTER GETTING INTO THE PRIVATE PROPERTY FROM IL RTE 83. I CAN DEFINITELY CONFIRM THAT MY LEG WAS NOT IN GAS PEDAL AS MY RIGHT LEG WAS ON THE BREAK PEDAL TO MAKE THOSE TURNS AND STOP THE CAR IN THE PARKING SPACE. IT ALL HAPPENED IN THE MATTER OF FEW SECONDS AND THERE WAS NO TIME TO REACT. THE CAR CAME TO HALT ONLY AFTER HITTING THE BUILDING. MY FRIEND AND I WERE DRIVING TO GO BUY SOME FOOD DURING HEAVY TRAFFIC AND I ENDED UP HITTING A POTHOLE I WAS UNABLE TO AVOID. RECENTLY I HEARD A CLUNKING SOUND COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR. UPON INSPECTION THE MECHANIC SAID THAT THE SUB FRAME ON THE PASSENGER'S SIDE HAD RUSTED/ROTTED OUT AND THAT THE FRONT SUSPENSION HAD COME LOOSE FROM THE SUB FRAME. HE SAID THAT THE CAR WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE IT REPAIRED IMMEDIATELY. I CALLED SUNNYSIDE HONDA AND SPOKE WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER REGARDING THE PROBLEM. I SAID THAT I HAD LOOKED ON THE INTERNET AND THIS WAS A HONDA DESIGN DEFECT AND THAT NUMEROUS INDIVIDUALS HAD REPORTED THE SAME PROBLEM. I ASKED IF HONDA WAS WILLING TO DO ANYTHING TO HELP WITH THE REPAIR BECAUSE IT WAS A DESIGN DEFECT AND THAT I HAD BEEN A LOYAL HONDA CUSTOMER FOR YEARS. THE SERVICE MANAGER CONTACTED HONDAS DISTRICT SERVICE MANAGER WHO REPLIED THAT HONDA WAS NOT WILLING TO COVER ANY OF THE $2,000.00 COST OF REPLACING THE SUB FRAME. I THEN FOLLOWED UP WITH AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO., INC.'S MAIN CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT IN CALIFORNIA. I SPOKE WITH [XXX] AND SHE PUT ME ON HOLD FOR A LONG TIME. WHEN SHE RETURNED SHE SAID THAT THE DISTRICT SERVICE MANAGER HAD SAID HONDA WAS NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING TO HELP SO THE MAIN CUSTOMER SERVICE PEOPLE WERE NOT ABLE TO DO ANYTHING TO HELP. A SHORT TIME AGO MY GRANDSON, A STUDENT AT BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY, PURCHASED A 1998 HONDA ACCORD FOR $4000.00. UPON RECENT INSPECTION OF THAT CAR THE SUB FRAME HAS RUSTED/ROTTED OUT THE SAME AS MY CAR AND MANY OTHER HONDA ACCORDS. I BELIEVE THAT HONDA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR RECALLING AND REPAIRING THESE UNSAFE AUTOMOBILES BEFORE SOMEONE IS INJURED OR KILLED AS A RESULT OF THEIR DESIGN DEFECT AND THAT THEY WILL CONTINUE TO BE UNWILLING TO DO SO AS LONG AS INDIVIDUALS HAVE NO POWER TO MAKE THEM TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. RECENTLY TOOK A 2000 ACCORD SE TO HONDA DEALER FOR TRADE IN. THE DEALERSHIP PUT THE CAR ON THE HOIST FOR INSPECTION BEFORE DETERMINING A TRADE IN PRICE. ONE OF THE FIRST PLACES THAT THE MECHANIC LOOKED WAS AT THE FRAME AND FRONT SUSPENSION ON THE PASSENGER'S SIDE. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY IT WAS FOUND THAT OVER HALF THE WIDTH OF THE FRONT CROSS BEAM WAS WASTED AWAY, AND WAS IN DANGER OF BREAKING OFF AT ANY TIME. BOTH THE MECHANIC AND SALESMAN AGREED, THIS WAS A PROBLEM THEY HAD SEEN MANY TIMES ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT YEARS OF THIS MODEL. THE ROTTING OF THE BEAM WAS APPARENTLY CAUSED BY CONDENSATE DRIPPING FROM THE AIR CONDITIONER DRAIN, WHICH WAS LOCATED DIRECTLY ABOVE THE BEAM. I WAS TOLD THAT BECAUSE IT HAD BEEN SUCH A PROBLEM, THE DRAINS HAD BEEN MOVED TO A DIFFERENT LOCATION ON THE NEXT GENERATION. THE ESTIMATE TO HAVE IT REPAIRED WAS $1300.00. DEAR NHTSA: I AM WRITING ABOUT MY 2000 HONDA ACCORD COUPE WHICH HAD AN ACCIDENT ON MAY 22ND, 2010. I WAS DRIVING IN DRY CONDITIONS ALONG I-85 NORTH IN JEFFERSON COUNTY, GEORGIA WHEN THE LEFT REAR TIRE SUDDENLY BLEW OUT CAUSING MY CAR TO FLIP AND ROLL OVER. WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE BLOWOUT. I LOST CONSCIOUSNESS BRIEFLY AND MY NECK WAS SEVERELY BROKEN. I HAD TO HAVE AN OPERATION AND WILL BE OUT OF WORK FOR AT LEAST THREE MONTHS. MY SON WAS INJURED BUT NOT AS SEVERELY AS ME, WITH MANY CUTS ON HIS FACE AND EAR. TWO OTHER OCCUPANTS RECEIVED MANY BRUISES AND CUTS ON ARMS, LEGS AND FACES. THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS.
