cracked engine block leaking coolant. Honda says it's not covered after the extended warranty expired. The issue starts happening in many vehicles after 100K miles and my car started seeing the issue at 135K miles . Dealer will not help, Honda of America won't help. this needs to turn into a recall please. Honda must reimburse or have the crack fixed.
- What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? My 2006 Honda Civic engine overheated. Upon diagnosis it was found that radiator coolant had leaked out due to cracks in the engine block (short block). Engine malfunction. - How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? My teenage son drives this car and initially he did not notice coolant leak. Engine can stop working while driving on a freeway (seized engine) which is a very serious safety risk. - Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, local Honda dealer confirmed the problem and pointed me to a service bulletin 10-048 from American Honda [XXX] ) that noted this exact manufacturing defect. American Honda had provided extended warranty to allay customer fears at the time but without a recall. - Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? It was inspected by a Honda dealer, Tracy Honda at California. It was also inspected by another local auto shop and had the same finding. I am attaching those documents. - Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning signs. There's crack in the engine block, my car out of no wear started over heating we thought it was the water pump then we took it in to get it look at and turn out there's cracks on the engine block
The ac has stopped working the heater does not blow out hot air,the air bag light has came on ,&now the car started to overheated an now will not start at all now...the oil light has came on ...when the car was running the transmission was not shifting correctly....

The car developed a crack in the engine block resulting in coolant leaks. This is unsafe and produces a toxic smell. The car is only at 119,000 miles and Honda will not cover it because it is 10 years past the warranty date. This warranty needs to be extended further. 119,000 miles is not a good quality Honda product.
Engine overheats due to a crack in the engine block causing the coolant to leak.Overheated engine smokes and has the potential for fire. I did my research and spoke to handful of certified mechanics, the solution is as I understand is to replace the engine. there was a recall notice sent September 2014 to address this issue which I did not receive nor I had a problem at the time of notice. Could someone please look into this for us, it would greatly help me and my family to be safe on the road while driving this vehicle. Thank you,
I am a loyal 35 year honda Car owner I own a 2006 Civic ex 1.8 Coupe I take every care and keep maint. up to date and even have done a 100k service at it's now low 38,000 miles as of july 2022 I have the fear that this vehicle because of such low miles will go bad because of honda faulty porrus engine blocks they know it was and is still a major problem. Problem with my car is not feeling safe to drive long distance in fear of engine block suddenly leaks and overheats engine. honda refuses to recall all 2006-2008 civics. So why own such a nice perfectly upkept honda that my family' feels unsafe to drive across country, PLEASE MAKE THEM RECALL ALL ENGINES FROM 2006-2008 CIVICS COME ON WE HAVE BEEN LOYAL AND BUYING YOUR PRODUCTS NOW DO THE RIGHT THING AND RECALL A MOTOR THAT IF HONDA HADNT CHEAPED OUT AND MDE BLOCKS SO THIN THEY FAIL WITHOUT ANY WARNING. *****BOTH KEY TRANSPONDERS WERE RESPONSIVE TO THE CAR TODAY, IE GREEN KEY LIGHT LIT WHEN BOTH KEYS WERE INSERTED AND TURNED TO TURN ON THE VEHICLE ALLOWING THE CAR RADIO AND WINDOWS TO BE CONTROLLED, UNLIKE OTHER DAYS WHERE FRAUD OCCURRED SO THAT THE CAR WOULD NOT RECOGNIZE BOTH AND ONLY ONE OR THE OTHER***** Unidentified party, most likely remotely, Stole control of my vehicle through manipulating non factory installed equipment that was installed after market and using factory installed equipment in a manner not openly discussed with the purchaser and owner. If it’s the police again or the manufacturer/ dealership or any court, has never disclosed or notified ownership or responsibility of such activities for now ten years. Spoke to manager again to inform that vehicle was again manipulated in retaliation to returning the gym when no open discussion occurred or report was received about not continuing a relationship between 24 Hour Fitness and myself as a member. Female onsite manager received reports that vehicle would not turn on again due to security alarm restriction, not mechanical failures, and that such activity was ongoing activity in furtherance of other abuses related to visiting that gym, such as vehicle and locker searches, which although not communicated to the manager, never resulted in further contact by the police or any authority regarding its occurrence.
I have a cracked engine block due to the service bulletin and I need Honda to repair asap among other problems
Honda Civic, 2006, engine block cracked and car overheated due to coolant loss without alerting driver to safety concerns, putting him/herself in jeopardy, along with other drivers/passengers. Overheating causes engines to stop operating which is extremely dangerous and costly. Driver ascertained that something wasn’t right at lower speeds (residence/business district). A faint whining was coming from the dashboard. This would likely not have been heard driving at faster speeds, and/or with the radio on. Once parked the operator smelled and saw smoke emanating from the vehicle hood and noticed leaking under the car. There was no prior warning sign. According to recent communication with Honda America by the operator, this engine block failure is a known issue and a result of a casting problem during manufacturing. A voluntary warranty extension was made in 2014 for 2006 - 2008 (extended to 2009) for Honda Civics for 10 years from the date of purchase. Unfortunately, many drivers, who were/are unaware of the warranty extension/issue, and for whom hadn’t detected/or had a problem prior are unknowingly driving ticking time bombs around. This warranty extension has since expired. Honda has not made an official recall and is not keeping drivers informed about the prevailing issue, which is unknowingly putting drivers at risk. Based on sales data for North America there were roughly 1.2 million Honda Civics sold between 2006 and 2009, many of which are still on the road today. For a refurbished engine (not new), plus labor it is estimated to cost between $1,500 - $2,000 for repairs. This doesn’t take into account the cost of human or vehicle harm. 13 December, 2021 VIN: [XXX] Background: 30 June, 2015 - Took Our 2006 Honda Civic 4 door sedan (LX) in for service (odometer reading 75,801) in order to address coolant leaks. The OEM dealership indicated there was a recall on this specific engine and Honda USA replaced the short block and gaskets ( exhibit H0CS10872 – replacement engine ID number D67141432M ) to correct this problem. Issue: 10 December, 2021 - While driving home (8 miles on local errands) the engine began making a rattling noise. No warranting indicators appeared on the dashboard alerts. Parked the in garage, inspected the garage floor for fluid leaks – there were none. Immediately arranged to take can in for service. 12 December, 2021 - Left residence to take the car in for an inspection and / or service. Without warranting the engine failed, lost steering and braking. Had car towed for inspection. 13 December, 2021 – Car inspected (odometer reading 117,366) finding engine sized. It should be noted that since the short block replacement the car has only been driven 41,565 miles in 5 years. I have the common issue the 2006 Civic. My engine block cracked. There was already a class action lawsuit on this matter but of course it only went 10 years. Honda was in the wrong here. Why was this not a recall? I'm super frustrated. Car is available for inspection. It is at the Honda dealership right. Now.

CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK. THIS IS A KNOWN MANUFACTURERS DEFECT. THIS HAPPENED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT RUNNING. AFTER SITTING OVERNIGHT THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF FLUID LOSS. A LARGE PUDDLE WAS OBSERVED UNDER THE CAR. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION IT WAS FOUND TO HAVE A CRACK IN THE ENGINE BLOCK. THERE WAS A EXTENDED WARRANTY ISSUED FOR THIS PROBLEM. UNFORTUNATELY MY VEHICLE IS 4 YEARS PAST THIS WARRANTY. I FEEL THAT THIS KIND OF ISSUE SHOULD NOT HAVE A CAP ON WHEN THE WARRANTY SHOULD END. THIS 2006 HONDA CIVIC HAS LESS THAN 70K MILES ON IT. ON FEBRUARY 22, 2020, MY FAMILY DROVE ABOUT 8 MILES ON THE HIGHWAY AND NOTICED A SMELL OF ANTI-FREEZE. WHEN WE REACHED OUR DESTINATION, WE CHECKED THE ENGINE AND SAW FLUID LEAKING ON THE ENGINE BLOCK. THERE WERE NO INDICATOR LIGHTS ON THE DASH SO WE DROVE ANOTHER 8 MILES ON THE HIGHWAY TO TAKE THE CAR BACK HOME. WHEN WE PARKED IT IN THE GARAGE, COOLANT COMPLETELY EMPTIED ONTO THE GARAGE FLOOR FROM A CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK. WHILE WE FEEL THANKFUL WE WERE ABLE TO GET HOME SAFELY, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS FAILURE IN THE ENGINE HAD WE BEEN DRIVING A LONGER DISTANCE. FROM WHAT I'VE READ ON THE INTERNET, 2006 HONDA CIVICS HAVE RECOGNIZED ISSUES WITH CRACKED ENGINE BLOCKS. THE COMMON FAILURE IN THESE ENGINES SHOULD WARRANT SOME TYPE OF RECALL AS THESE CARS SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED ON THE ROADWAYS. THE FAILURE IN THE ENGINE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING AND AS MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY, THERE WERE NO INDICATOR LIGHTS ON THE DASH. THE POSSIBILITY OF THE ENGINE SEIZING WHILE DRIVING AT HIGH SPEEDS IS INCREDIBLY HIGH AND POSES A SIGNIFICANT RISK TO THE DRIVER, PASSENGERS, AND OTHER PEOPLE ON THE ROADWAYS. I'M URGING NHTSA TO TAKE THE PROPER ACTIONS SO HONDA WILL REMEDY THIS SITUATION AND PREVENT POTENTIAL CATASTROPHIC FAILURES RELATED TO THE FAULTY ENGINE BLOCKS IN THESE HONDA CIVICS.

WE BOUGHT A 2006 HONDA CIVIC IN 2013, ONLY TO HAVE THE DEALERSHIP NOT DISCLOSE THE WARRANTY EXTENSION PUT OUT ON THE CAR IN 2010. WE WOULD HAVE NEVER BOUGHT THAT CAR, AND BOUGHT ANOTHER. TERRIBLY DANGEROUS THE HAVE AN ENGINE BLOCK CRACK. THE BLOCK DID CRACK IN DECEMBER 2019. AMERICAN HONDA WILL DO NOTHING. PASSED THE WARRANTY EXTENSION.. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SAFETY RECALL. THE CAR WITH ONLY 129,000 IS GARBAGE AND WE ARE OUT MONEY. WE WILL NEVER BUY HONDA AGAIN. WE'VE BOUGHT AT LEAST 10 IN OUR 27 YEAR MARRIAGE. THE CRACKING COULD HAVE EXPLODED THE ENGINE!

MY 18 YEAR OLD SON WAS OUT OF TOWN WAS ON HIS WAY HOME ON A HIGHWAY. HIS HONDA CIVIC'S A/C BEGAN TO BE LESS AND LESS COOL. THEN HIS TEMPERATURE GAUGE QUICKLY ROSE AS FAR IN THE RED THAT IT COULD GO. HE PULLED OVER AND CALLED US. WE WENT TO PICK HIM UP. THERE WAS NO SIGN OF A LEAK UNDER HIS CAR BUT THE ANTIFREEZE WAS LOW. WE FILLED IT UP AND DROVE IT HOME. THE NEXT DAY WE CHECKED THE ANTIFREEZE LEVEL AND IT WAS VERY LOW AGAIN WITH NO SIGN OF ANYTHING UNDER THE CAR. WE TOOK THE CAR IN AND THE ANTIFREEZE WAS LEAKING INTO THE OIL. WE HAD ONE OF THE CIVICS THAT HAD THE KNOWN ISSUE OF FAULTY MANUFACTURING AND THE ENGINE BLOCKS WERE CRACKING AROUND THE 100,000 MILE MARK. THIS SITUATION COULD HAVE BEEN POTENTIALLY EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AS MY SON DROVE IT ON THE HIGHWAY OFTEN FOR SCHOOL. HONDA IS TAKING NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DEFAULT BECAUSE IT WAS OUT OF THE EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THAT CLAIM. BECAUSE IT DIDN'T HAPPEN SOONER, DOES NOT MAKE THE DEFECT LESS DANGEROUS. SUBSEQUENTLY, I INFORMED THE LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP OF THE ISSUE, THEY SAID THE MY VEHICLE FALLS OUTSIDE OF THE 10 YEAR EXTENDED WARRANTY THE PROVIDES COVERAGE/ ENGINE REPLACEMENT TO REMEDY THIS ISSUE. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE DEALERSHIP CONDUCT THE OFFICIAL INSPECTION. THE INSPECTION COST IS 75.00 ALONE AND DOESN'T EVEN GUARANTEE THAT THE HONDA CORPORATION WILL EVEN LOOK AT THE EVIDENCE. IN THIS TIME, TEMPERATURE INCREASE TO 3/4 OF GAUGE, AND WHEN WE LEFT, THERE WAS CLEAR BURRING ODOR. VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED, CRACK IN THE ENGINE BLOCK NOTED - AND TOLD $4.6K TO FIX... AND THEN DETERMINED IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH HONDA CIVIC.... BUT HONDA DID NOT DEAL WITH IT! AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH, I FOUND OUT A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE AND HONDA HAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 10-048. I NEVER RECEIVED A LETTER ABOUT THIS. I CALLED HONDA AND TURNS OUT I WAS TOO LATE TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS SERVICE BULLETIN. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING ERROR AND HONDA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE CORRECTED PART. I CAN NOT AFFORD TO PAY FOR THIS REPAIR OUT OF MY POCKET AND EVEN IF I CAN I WOULD HAVE TO TAKE THE CHEAPEST ROUT AND BUY A SECOND HAND ENGINE AND I WILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN. ON 11/15/2017, I BOUGHT THE ABOVE VEHICLE FROM CONDEMI MOTOR COMPANY. I NOTICED COOLANT SMELL. I OPENED ENGINE COVER. FIRST THING I FOUND THE ANTI-FREEZE RESERVOIR WAS EMPTY. I COOL THE RADIATOR AND TOPPED THE COOLANT ALSO THE RESERVOIR. THE NEXT DAY, I DROVE THE CAR AND OPENED THE HOOD. I FOUND A COOLANT LEAKAGE, SHOW IN THE PICTURES. I COOL DOWN THE RADIATOR AND THE COOLANT LEVEL WAS CLEARLY REDUCED. AS WELL RESERVOIR TANK.

A KNOWN DEFECT - THE ENGINE BLOCK ON OUR 2006 HONDA CIVIC CRACKED WHILE MY SON WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY. WE'VE OWNED THE CAR FOR LESS THAN 2 YEARS AND WERE NEVER ADVISED THAT THE CIVIC ENGINE BLOCK WAS PRONE TO THIS - OR WE WOULD HAVE NOT PURCHASED THE CAR. HONDA ALREADY RECOGNIZED THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE BLOCK OF THE 2006-2008 MODELS, SINCE THEY EVEN EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FROM 8 TO 10 YEARS. MY CAR IS ALREADY 11 YEARS, BUT ONLY HAVE 105,000 MILES TO IT. I USED TO DRIVE A COMPANY VEHICLE, AND HAD ONLY BEEN USING MY CIVIC FOR SHORT TRIPS. IF MY CAR WOULD HAVE BEEN MY PRIMARY VEHICLE. THAT ENGINE BLOCK WOULD HAVE CRACKED BEFORE THE 10 YEAR WARRANTY WAS UP. SEARCHING THE INTERNET, I COULD SEE THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE AFFECTED BY THIS. WE DISCOVERED THIS MORNING THAT BECAUSE OF THE FLAWED ENGINE, HONDA HAD EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON MY ENGINE TO 10 YEARS. UNFORTUNATELY, I HAVE HAD THE CAR FOR MORE THAN 11 YEARS, SO THEY SAID THEY WILL NOT HELP ME. THEY CONSIDER THE CAR AS 11 YEARS OLD AND OUTSIDE THEIR 10 YEARS WARRANTY AND THE ONLY WARRANTY THE AMERICAN HONDA CORP WILL BE 50 PERCENT OF THE PARTS AND LABOR COST FOR REMOVING AND REPLACING AN ENGINE. THEY DID OFFER AN ADDITIONAL 5 YEAR WARRANTY ON THIS PART BUT LOOKING ONLINE THESE PROBLEMS ARE APPEARING IN 11 OR 12 YEARS. I BOUGHT THIS CAR FROM A JUDGE WHO PASSED AWAY AND HIS SERVICE RECORDS WERE UP TO DATE AND THE CAR WAS IN GREAT CONDITION. HOWEVER N REVIEWING THE HONDA WEB SITE THIS ISSUE WAS NEVER MENTIONED. I WAS FORTUNATE NOT TO BE ON A HIGHWAY AND THE ENGINE COULD HAVE BEEN BLOWN UP.

MY 2006 HONDA HAS 142,000 MILES AND HAS BEEN RUNNING VERY WELL UP TO THIS POINT. APPARENTLY IF MY ENGINE BLOCK WOULD HAVE CRACKED 10 MONTHS AGO IT WOULD HAVE BEEN UNDER WARRANTY. BUT BECAUSE IT'S A 2006 AND THE WARRANTY ONLY LASTS FOR 10 YEARS I AM OUT OF LUCK. MY CAR THAT WAS WORTH $5000 TO $6000 A WEEK AGO IS NOW VALUED AT $0. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT DESCRIBED IN SERVICE BULLETIN 10-048 AS A RESULT OF HOW THE BLOCK WAS CAST. THE SERVICE BULLETIN EXTENDS WARRANTY OF THE ENGINE BLOCK TO 10 YEARS FROM THE PURCHASE DATE BUT MY 2006 CIVIC FALLS OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY RANGE RIGHT NOW AND AMERICAN HONDA REFUSED TO COVER THE REPLACEMENT COST. THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT COST IS NOW WORTH MORE THAN THE VALUE OF THE CAR. THE ISSUE HAPPENED JUST GETTING OFF THE HIGHWAY. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE COVERED IN HONDA TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 10-048, BUT THAT ONLY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 10 YEARS. MY CAR WAS ORIGINALLY SOLD IN JULY 2006, SO THIS HAPPENED ABOUT 7 MONTHS PAST THAT 10-YEAR CUTOFF. I'VE BEEN QUOTED $5800 FOR A NEW ENGINE, WHICH IS MORE THAN THE CAR'S VALUE. THERE ARE MANY OTHER OWNERS OF 2006 MODELS IN THE SAME SITUATION ALREADY, AND THERE WILL BE EVEN MORE AS EACH SUBSEQUENT MODEL YEAR UP TO 2009 HITS THE 10-YEAR MARK. LUCKILY I CAUGHT THIS PROBLEM BEFORE IT BECAME A MAJOR HAZARD. FIRST THE CAR'S HEATER QUIT BLOWING WARM AIR, THEN A FEW DAYS LATER I NOTICED COOLANT LEAKING FROM UNDERNEATH ANY TIME I PARKED. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC WHO FOUND THE CRACK IN THE ENGINE BLOCK. IF I HADN'T NOTICED THE LEAK AND THE COOLANT HAD BEEN COMPLETELY DEPLETED, THE ENGINE COULD HAVE OVERHEATED AND POSSIBLY FAILED ALTOGETHER WHILE DRIVING.

I WAS RECENTLY INFORMED BY A HONDA REPAIR SHOP THAT MY 2006 HONDA CIVIC HAD A CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK. THE SERVICEMAN RECOMMENDED THAT I CONTACT HONDA USA REGARDING A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN THAT WAS ISSUED. I CONTACT HONDA AND THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THIS WAS A PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE, HOWEVER THEY CANNOT PAY FOR THE REPAIR BECAUSE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY EXPIRED. I EXPLAINED THAT I BROUGHT THE CAR USED WOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN THAT THERE WAS SUCH A SERIOUS ISSUE WITH THE CAR UNLESS I NEEDED A REPAIR AT A DEALERSHIP. I HAVE SPOKEN TO TWO REPRESENTATIVES SO FAR AND RECEIVED THE SAME "STANDARD" ANSWER. "WE ACKNOWLEDGE THERE IS A PROBLEM OF THIS TYPE WITH THE CAR AND THAT'S WHY WE ISSUED THE EXTENDED WARRANTY." I EXPLAINED THAT THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A WIDE SPREAD ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE AND HONDA SHOULD STAND BEHIND IT'S PRODUCT BY PAYING 100% OF THE REPAIR COST WITH NO TIME OR MILEAGE LIMIT. AS AN OWNER OF TWO ACURAS AND A HONDA, I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED WITH MY EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR APPROACH TO CONSUMER COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS CAR. THIS DEFECT IS NOT THE CUSTOMERS FAULT. I AM CONTINUING TO PURSUE A RESOLUTION THAT ENDS WITH HONDA TAKING FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DEFECT IN THESE CARS. THE CRACK IS LOCATED IN THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE, BEHIND THE EXHAUST HEADER PIPE AND DIFFICULT TO SEE. IT IS HOWEVER IN THE SAME AREA AS ALL OF THE OTHER REPORTED COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER CIVIC OWNERS ON THE WEB. AFTER SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET I FOUND OUT THAT THIS WAS A VERY COMMON AND WIDESPREAD ISSUE WITH THE 2006-2009 CIVICS. I CONTACTED HONDA CORPORATE AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. FUNNY HOW I NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTICES WHATSOEVER AND DID NOT HAVE THE SLIGHTEST CLUE THAT THIS WAS AN ISSUE FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP. NEEDLESS TO SAY I AM ONE YEAR PAST THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND HONDA WILL COVER NOTHING AT ALL. CAR HAS 63,000 MILES AND IS OTHERWISE IN MINT CONDITION. ASKED HONDA TO PROVE THAT THEY SENT OUT THE NOTICE TO ME AND THEY HAVE YET TO RESPOND. HAD I RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATION OF THIS ISSUE I WOULD HAVE MOST LIKELY TRADED THE CAR. MY BLOCK FAILURE CAME 4-MONTHS OUT OF SECOND EXTENDED WARRANTY PERIOD. HONDA SAYS THEY WILL NOT HONOR WARRANTY BECAUSE THE CAR IS 4-MONTHS OUT OF WARRANTY. CALLED THE LOCAL HONDA DEALER AND HONDA CUSTOMER RELATIONS NUMBERS TO NO AVAIL. THIS PROBLEM IS A DEFECT AND HONDA HAS ADMITTED TO IT THAT'S WHY THEY PROVIDED WARRANTIES FOR THIS PROBLEM. I WAS DRIVING ON I-40 TRAVELING TOWARDS WILMINTON, NC WHEN I LOOKED DOWN AND SAW THE TEMPERATURE LIGHT WAS REGISTERING HOT AND WAS IN THE RED ZONE. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO WILMINTON, NC. THE SHOP DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK. THEY CALLED HONDA TO SEE IF THE CAR WAS COVERED UNDER TSB 10-048 AND THEY WERE TOLD THE 10 YEAR WARRANTY ON MY CAR EXPIRED IN JULY. THE CAR HAS ONLY 66,000 MILES ON IT. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. THIS DEFECT CAN CAUSE THE CAR TO STOP RUNNING ANYWHERE. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED IN RALEIGH ON I-40 THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT.

I WAS DRIVING HOME AFTER MIDNIGHT AND NOTICED A SMELL. I LOOKED FOR SMOKE AND SAW NONE. I GOT STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND CHECKED THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE AND SAW IT WAS AT 3/4 RATHER THAN 1/2 AND JUMPED TO FULL WHILE WAITING AT THE RED LIGHT. NO WARNING LIGHTS OR INDICATORS EVER LIT UP. I PULLED INTO A GAS STATION ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE INTERSECTION AND HAD IT TOWED HOME AND THEN AGAIN TO THE HONDA DEALER I GO TO FOR MY MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS IN THE MORNING. THEY CALLED LATER THAT AFTERNOON TO SAY IT WAS A CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK AND WOULD BE $5000 + TAX FOR A NEW BLOCK. THEY TRIED TO GET HONDA TO HONOR THE TSB-08-044 WARRANTY BUT IT WAS JUST OUTSIDE THE TIME FRAME FOR THE WARRANTY SO HONDA REFUSED. THE CAR HAS AROUND 148K MILES ON IT AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN IN FOR ALL REGULAR MAINTENANCE SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR USED IN 2010 AT 30K MILES. I NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTICE OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE BLOCK EVEN THOUGH THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY EXTENSION TO 8 YEARS HAPPENED IN AUGUST 2010. I DID HOWEVER GET THE AIRBAG RECALL NOTICE EARLIER THIS YEAR, SO HONDA KNOWS I OWN THE CAR AND SHOULD HAVE LET ME KNOW ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND THE WARRANTY. CHECKING ON THE INTERNET, THIS ENGINE BLOCK FAILURE IS STILL HAPPENING TO WAY TOO MANY HONDA CIVICS AFTER 10 YEARS WITH MANY RANGES OF MILEAGE, BUT HONDA IS REFUSING TO HELP IN ANY WAY FOR A KNOWN CASTING ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE BLOCK. MY TWO PREVIOUS HONDA CIVICS I OWNED FOR 11 YEARS WITH 208 K MILES AND 9 YEARS WITH 205K MILES AND NEITHER OF THEM HAD ANY ISSUES WITH THE ENGINE BLOCK. THE HONDA DEALER THAT SOLD ME THE CAR IN 2010 SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND DIDN'T AND HONDA ITSELF SHOULD HAVE INFORMED ME OF THE WARRANTY EXTENSIONS IN 2010 AND 2013 BUT DIDN'T. ENGINE BLOCKS DO NOT NORMALLY FAIL SO I BELIEVE HONDA SHOULD BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE COSTS NO MATTER HOW LONG IT TAKES FOR THE PROBLEM TO OCCUR.

AT THIS POINT I HAD INFORMATION ON HONDA'S ENGINE BLOCK PROBLEMS. 2006 HONDA CIVIC 'ENGINE BLOCK CRACK' TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 10-048: THE PROBLEM: THE ENGINE BLOCK MAY LEAK COOLANT, RESULTING IN ENGINE OVERHEATING. CORRECTIVE ACTION: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ENGINE BLOCK FREE OF CHARGE. WARRANTY INFO: REPAIRS WILL BE DONE UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY (10 YEARS FROM THE ORIGINAL DATE OF PURCHASE, NO MILEAGE LIMITS). MY 2006 HONDA CIVIC WAS PURCHASED AUGUST 14, 2006. THE ENGINE FAILURE HAPPENED DURING THE WARRANT PERIOD. MY LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP AND AMERICAN HONDA REFUSES TO REPAIR MY VEHICLE AT 100% THEY OFFERED SPLIT COST FOR THE ENGINE BLOCK OF 10% FOR ME TO PAY. THEY ALSO SAID THE THE GASKET CYLINDER HEAD WAS DAMAGED DUE TO OVER HEATING BECAUSE OF THE CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK. THEY HAD ME PAY 50% COST OF THE REPAIR. THEY ALSO HAD ME PAY 10% FOR REPLACEMENT OF COILS. ALL THIS DAMAGE WAS DUE TO THE FAULTY ENGINE BLOCK. TSB STATES REPLACE THE COILS AND CHECK FOR HEAD GASKET DAMAGE. IF DAMAGE IS FOUND GO TO STEP ?? I CONCLUDE IT MEANS REPLACE THE GASKET CYLINDER HEAD. HONDA CLEARLY KNOWS OF THIS ISSUE AND HAS NOT ISSUED ANY RECALLS. CALLED HONDA AMERICA TO VERIFY THAT ISSUES IS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY (SPECIFICALLY TSB 10-048). HONDA AMERICA DENIED WARRANTY BECAUSE THE TSB ONLY COVERS SPECIFIC EXTERNAL CRACKS IN THE ENGINE BLOCK. THE CRACKS ON THIS VEHICLE WERE LIKELY INSIDE THE HEAD, POSSIBLY INSIDE OF CYLINDER. CAUSE OF INITIAL OVERHEATING REMAINS UNIDENTIFIED. AFTER FEW MINUTES, THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE INDICATED SEVER OVERHEATING, THEN THE CAR SPUTTERS, RAPIDLY LOSING POWER -I BARELY MADE IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD SAFELY OUT OF TRAFFIC ON I-95 WHEN THE CAR SHUTS OFF AND SMOKE. I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING OR EVEN A HINT OF A PROBLEM; NO NOISES, NO DASH LIGHTS ON, NO ISSUES WITH IGNITION, GEARS, OR DRIVING PERFORMANCE. I HAD TO ARRANGE THE CAR TOW TO MY DEALERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT. AFTER THAT, THE DEALER REPORTS ENGINE IS COMPLETELY BURNED, NOT DRIVABLE AND NOT REPAIRABLE. THE OIL STRIP BURNS HALF WAY. THEY DONT KNOW WHAT CAUSES THE ENGINE OVERHEATED. THIS OVERHEATING PROBLEM IS NOT DUE TO THE CRACKS THAT ARE INCLUDED IN THE WARRANTY EXTENSION. THEY DON'T COVER THE REPLACEMENT COST. IF WE WANT TO REPLACE A ENGINE, A USED ENGINE BLOCK IS $5600. IT LOOKS LIKE I WILL NEED TO RENT A CAR FOR AT LEAST NEXT TWO WEEKS BECAUSE I AM STILL NEGOTIATING WITH MY DEALER ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND IF IT IS COVERED BY ANY WARRANTY. THEY TIGHTEN THIS PART AND CHARGED ME FOR LABOR AND THE TIME ON THE COMPUTER (WHICH CAME TO $104.). THEY SAID THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS PART FOR SOME OF THE 2006 HONDA CIVICS, BUT THAT MINE WAS NOT THE RIGHT VIN NUMBER FOR THIS RECALL. SHE PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, WHERE HER HUSBAND LIFTED AND TRIED TO CHECK THE OIL, BUT THERE WASN'T MUSH LEFT OF THE DIPSTICK. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE NEAREST REPAIR FACILITY. A DIAGNOSIS REVEALED A DEAD ENGINE. THE COST OF REPLACING THE ENGINE WAS NEAR THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE. SO, SHE AND HER HUSBAND, DECIDED NOT TO HAVE THE VEHICLE FIXED.
THE ENGINE BLOCK LEAKS COOLANT, THE MOTOR OVERHEATS TO A DEGREE THAT IS AUDIBLE, YOU CAN HEAR THE STEAM ESCAPING FROM THE COOLANT CONTAINER, THE HEAT DAMAGES THE THERMOSTAT AND BURNS THE GASKETS AND IT BECOMES A SELF-DESTRUCTING CYCLE BECAUSE THE MOTOR IS INCAPABLE OF COOLING ITSELF WITHOUT THE THERMOSTAT AND, THE COOLANT. IN SOME CASES THE CRACK IN THE BLOCK THAT LEAKS IS APPARENT; IN MY CASE THE CRACK IS NOT VISIBLE OR EASY TO SEE AND THE DEALERS TECHNICIAN IS REFUSING TO HONOR THE RECALL THAT HONDA HAS ALREADY IN PLACE FOR THIS PARTICULAR MODEL. THE SERVICE MANAGER EXPLAINED TO THE CONSUMER, THAT EVEN THOUGH ALL THE SYMPTOMS OF THE VEHICLE INDICATED THAT THERE WAS A COOLING FLUID EVAPORATING, THE MOTOR WAS OVERHEATING, THE HEAT WAS BURNING THE GASKETS AND THE THERMOSTAT, HE HAD TO RELY ON THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSIS TELLING HIM THAT HIS PARTICULAR MOTOR WAS NOT CRACKED EXACTLY WHERE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE. I HAVE HAD FIVE TIMES STARTING ABOUT FIVE YEARS WHEN MY CAR WOULD TRY TO ACCELERATE WITHOUT MY FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR. IN ALL INSTANCES THE ENGINE WAS COLD (WITHIN ONE OR TWO MINUTE OF STARTING). IN THREE CASES I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY GARAGE AND HAD TO PRESS THE BRAKE HARD TO PREVENT THE CAR FROM RUNNING AWAY. THE SURGE IN ACCELERATION LASTS FOR ONLY 2-3 SECONDS BUT ITS REALLY SCARY!. THE LAST OCCURRENCE WAS LAST MONTH WHEN I FINISHED BACKING OUT OF MY GARAGE AND PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE. AS I RELEASED THE BRAKE, THE CAR ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN. AT 25 MPH OR SO I PRESSED ON THE BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN AND WHEN I RELEASED THE BRAKE, THE ACCELERATION STOPPED. IT MAY HAVE BEEN A COINCIDENCE THE ACCELERATION STOPPED WHEN I RELEASED THE BRAKE BUT IT DIDN'T SEEM SO AT THE TIME. WHILE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON THE HIGHWAY DURING A TRAFFIC JAM WHICH WAS CAUSED BY AN ACCIDENT, THE CAR BROKE DOWN WITH NO WARNING. THERE WAS A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND NEARLY IMMEDIATELY THE CAR STOPPED WORKING ENTIRELY, SO STRANDED FOR 3 HOURS ON THE HIGHWAY WAITING FOR A TOW TRUCK. CAR TOWED TO MECHANIC AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE ENGINE OVERHEATED - ALL THE PLASTIC PIECES I.E. DIPSTICK WERE MELTED, ALONG WITH PARTS OF THE RADIATOR - THE FILLER CAP WAS CLEARLY MELTED. THERE WAS NO INDICATION THERE WAS ANY OVERHEATING OCCURRING DURING THE PROBLEM - AGAIN, A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND THEN THE CAR IMMEDIATELY STOPPED RUNNING ON THE HIGHWAY. LATER IT WAS DISCOVERED THERE WAS A RECALL/TSB FOR THIS MODEL HONDA FOR THE ENGINE BLOCK CRACKING AND OVERHEATING. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF OVERHEATING AT ANY TIME AND THE VEHICLE DID NOT ALLOW EVEN FOR NURSING THE CAR TO THE NEARBY EXIT. IT IS EXTREMELY FORTUNATE THE CAR WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC - JUST BARELY, STILL IN A PRECARIOUS POSITION. AFTER THE DEALERSHIP "FIXED" THE ENGINE, PROVIDED HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, AND REFUSED TO FIX ANYTHING THE MELTED ENGINE DESTROYED (RADIATOR) THE CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP (DEALERSHIPS AND OTHERWISE) MULTIPLE TIMES FOR OTHER ITEMS "NOT COVERED" WITH THE MELTED ENGINE TSB SO I WILL BE REPORTING ANTICIPATED BREAK-DOWNS IN HORRIBLE TRAFFIC WITH NO WARNING HERE AS NEEDED. *TR

THE ENGINE GOES INTO IDLE MODE AND WHEN THE LIGHT CHANGES OR I CAN GO, I TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND TRY OR START TO PRESS THE GAS. MOST OF THE TIME I DON'T EVEN HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRESS THE GAS PEDAL BEFORE THE CAR STALLS. THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUTS OFF. I HAVE NOTICED THE LAST TWO TIMES THAT THE CAR'S AC WAS ON DURING THE STALLS. BEFORE I RESTART THE CAR THERE ISN'T AN ERROR CODE OR ANYTHING DISPLAYED. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR TO A HONDA DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT TESTED AND EACH TIME THEY CONNECT IT TO A COMPUTER AND TELL ME THAT THERE ISN'T ANYTHING WRONG OR THEY CAN'T PRODUCE THE PROBLEM. THERE ISN'T A FUEL PROBLEM BECAUSE I PUT SHELL GAS IN MY CAR EACH AND EVERY TIME AND I CHECKED THE AIR FILTER. I EVEN HAD A TECHNICIAN AT PEPBOYS CHECK THE BATTERY. PEPBOYS SAID THE BATTERY WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND OTHERS ON THE INTERNET SAY THAT IT COULD BE THE COMPUTER'S IDLE SPEED MAY NEED TO BE READJUSTED AND SOME SAY THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE IS FAULTY. I MENTIONED THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE TO THE HONDA TECHNICIAN AND THEY SAID THAT DOESN'T SEEM TO BE A PROBLEM. THERE IS A PROBLEM BECAUSE OTHERS HAVE REPORTED IT AND THE CAR STALLS. *TR

UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION OF PROBLEM THE MECHANIC FOUND 2 CRACKS IN THE ENGINE BLOCK ON THE BACK SIDE. HE STATES THAT IT HAD BEEN LEAKING WATER AND ANTIFREEZE FOR A WHILE. HE SAID HE HAD NOT SEEN THIS TYPE CRACK SINCE HE HAS BEEN IN BUSINESS. HE ALSO STATED THAT THE CRACK WAS VERY ODD BECAUSE OF WHERE THE CRACKS WERE. HE COMMENTED THAT WAS A DEFECT FROM FACTORY. NOTHING WAS DONE BY HONDA EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE AWARE OF ISSUES WITH THE ENGINE IN THE 2006-2008 ENGINES IN THE HONDA CIVIC. JUST SOL WITH HONDA. HER FATHER ADVISED HER TO TAKE THE CAR IMMEDIATELY UP TO OUR MECHANIC (LESS THAN 3 MILES AWAY) WHERE HE ADVISED HER THAT SHE HAD A CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK AND AFTER A LITTLE RESEARCH TOLD HER THAT THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLETIN (08-044) AND WARRANTY EXTENSION BULLETIN (10-048) FROM HONDA ADVISING OF THIS ISSUE FOR ALL 2006-2008 HONDA CIVICS. SHE HAD HER VEHICLE TOWED DOWN TO A HONDA DEALERSHIP AND WAS ADVISED THAT SHE WOULD BE TOTALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL REPAIRS. AMERICAN HONDA IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND ACKNOWLEDGES ALL OF THE SERVICE BULLETINS BUT STATES THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT SINCE IT WAS NOT UNDER A RECALL. ALL OF THE TECHNICAL BULLETINS POINT TO THE FACT THAT THEY KNEW THAT ALL 2006-2008 HONDA CIVICS WERE POTENTIALLY AT RISK DUE TO A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. SO I BOUGHT THE CAR ANYWAY BECAUSE I AT THE TIME STRONGLY BELIEVED IN THE RELIABILITY OF ANY AND ALL HONDA MOTORS. A MONTH AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR IT STARTED TO OVER HEAD DUE TO THE COMMON ISSUE WITH ALL 2006-2009 HONDA CIVICS OF THE BLOCK CRACKING. I CALLED HONDA TO SEE IF THEY WOULD COVER IT BUT THEY WOULD NOT BECAUSE THE WARRANTY IS VOID DUE TO THE REBUILT TITLE. I BELIEVE THAT THIS ISSUE OF THE ENGINE BLOCK CRACKING SHOULD NOT BE A WARRANTY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE A RECALL. THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE THAT HONDA SHOULD TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR AND FIX ANY AND ALL CARS THAT ARE HAVE THE ISSUE WITH THE R16 BLOCK CRACKING. THE DRIVE BELT AUTO-TENSIONER PIVOT BOLT BROKE WHILE THE CAR WAS TRAVELLING. THE DRIVER NOTICED A LOUD MECHANICAL SOUND AND LATER DISCOVERED THE DRIVE BELT AUTO-TENSIONER PIVOT BOLT WAS NOT ATTACHED TO THE ENGINE BLOCK. THE DRIVER WAS LUCKY THE BELT DID NOT BREAK, THE WATER PUMP PULLEY DID NOT BREAK FROM THE FRICTION, OR THE BOLT FLY INTO THE ENGINE. IN EITHER CASE WE DISCOVERED THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE IN THE 2006 CIVIC MODEL AND HAD A TSB 09-007, STARTING JANUARY 30, 2009, UNTIL JANUARY 30, 2012. WE HAD TO TOW THE VEHICLE TO THE HONDA DEALERSHIP, WHERE WE WERE TOLD WE HAD TO COVER ALL COSTS, EVEN THOUGH THIS WAS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT ON PART OF THIS MODEL CAR. WHAT IS WORSE, MANY TIMES THE BOLT WILL BREAK AGAIN. I AM AFRAID OF THIS HAPPENING AND A POSSIBILITY OF LOSING CONTROL OVER THE CAR SHOULD THIS HAPPEN AGAIN. ALL I ASK IS HONDA REOPEN THIS TSB ON A CONTINUOUS BASIS TO FIX THEIR DEFECTIVE MODELS AND POSSIBLE REIMBURSEMENT FOR FIXING THE FLAW. *TR

AT AROUND 35MPH THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STARTED TO MAKE A METALLIC-TYPE NOISE AND THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN IMMEDIATELY. IF IT WOULD'VE HAPPENED 5 SECONDS LATER IT WOULD'VE OCCURRED RIGHT AS I WAS ABOUT TO MAKE A LEFT TURN, IT WOULD'VE MOST LIKELY CAUSED A SEVERE ACCIDENT AND POSSIBLY A FATALITY. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED FROM THEY TOLD ME A BOLT WAS TORN LOSE FROM THE TENSIONER. THIS CAUSED ALL BELTS TO BREAK DOWN AND THE ENGINE TO SHUTDOWN WHILE RUNNING AT AROUND 35MPHS. FURTHERMORE, THE BOLT FLEW INTO THE ENGINE BLOCK COSTING COSTLY REPAIRS. THE COMPANY, HONDA REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THIS DEFECT AND TOLD ME TO TAKE IT WITH MY EXTENDED WARRANT PROVIDER. THEY CLAIM IT'S WEAR AND TEAR BUT THAT IS NOT THE CASE AS PREVIOUS RECALLS FOR THE SAME PROBLEM WERE ISSUED FOR MY VEHICLE BUT ACCORDING TO THEM NOT MY PARTICULAR VIN. BOLTS SHOULDNT TEAR OFF AT 29,000 MILES OR SIX YEARS. *TR

I WAS DRIVING THE CAR DOWN A 2 LANE ROAD AND THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A NOISE AGAIN. THIS IS THE 4TH TIME THIS SAME PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED WITHIN ONE YEAR. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR TO TURN LEFT INTO A GAS STATION AND THE ENGINE WENT DEAD AND POWER STEERING WAS LOST. COULD NOT RE-START THE ENGINE AND HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP. INVOICE SAYS SERPENTINE BELT TENSIONER PIVOT BOLT IS BROKEN WHICH CAUSED BELT DAMAGE, WATERPUMP PULLEY DAMAGE, TENSIONER DAMAGE, ETC. DUE TO THE DAMAGE, ONE HELICOIL WAS NOT ENOUGH TO MAINTAIN THE PROPER TORQUE SO THEY HAD TO USE A SECOND ONE INSIDE THE FIRST ONE. NOTE ON THIS INVOICE SAYS "IF PROBLEM RECURS ENGINE BLOCK REPLACEMENT WILL BE NECESSARY." HONDA SENT OUT A TSB ABOUT THIS ON JANUARY 30, 2009 #09-007 THAT SAYS "THE CURRENT ROUTING OF THE ENGINE DRIVE BELT CREATES EXTRA FORCE ON THE DRIVE BELT AUTO-TENSIONER. IN RARE CASES, THIS EXTRA FORCE COULD BREAK THE AUTO-TENSIONER PIVOT BOLT, CAUSING AN ENGINE NOISE OR A LOSS OF POWER STEERING." I DID NOT RECEIVE A CARD IN THE MAIL SAYING THAT MY CAR WAS BEING RECALLED FOR REPAIR OF THIS PROBLEM, BUT I FEEL LIKE THIS TIME THERE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS INJURY WHEN MY CAR WENT DEAD WHILE I WAS TURNING LEFT ACROSS ONCOMING TRAFFIC. *TR
