As I was driving my car home on 8/31, I looked at the temperature gauge and saw my car was overheating. I make sure to check my temperature gauge periodically while driving so I am positive it’s the first time it’s popped up. I tried to pull over ASAP, but was in nonstop traffic and the car stopped moving. No lights were shown on the dashboard. I had recently gotten an oil change end of July when I purchased the car. Car was inspected by the state, 7/17/23 and passed. Car had a complete vehicle inspection the end of July as well and passed with flying colors. Car was diagnosed to have a cracked engine block by Conrad’s. My oil and coolant mixed. It has not been seen by a Honda manufacturer. No inspection done by insurance.

The vehicle was then towed to Firestone, where it was diagnosed that there was a crack in the engine block, and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that she would be charged a fee for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 134,000.

The vehicle started dripping coolant at a pretty consistent rate, and it is a cracked engine block. Honda has issued a service bulletin regarding the issue, but most of these vehicles (2006-2009 Civics) are now out of warranty and have to replace the engine at their own expense.

All of a sudden, with out warning, something was leaking from the car. Took it to a shop, and was surprised that they told me that it was leaking engine coolant and that the block was cracked and that the engine needed to be fixed replaced. No warning lights or anything, other than noticing that it was leaking something.

My daughter was driving Honda 2008 4DR Civic and it stopped acceleration on highway. Fumes were coming out of the car. Got it towed to Auto Centers. Their diagnostic stated that due to over heating of engine, one of the cylinder was not generating compression. The car is regularly serviced at Honda Civic dealer.

The contact owns a 2008 Honda Civic. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, the vehicle started to overheat. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact pulled into the gas station and allowed the vehicle to cool down. The contact then refilled coolant in the vehicle. The contact was able to continue driving. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the part of the engine block located between with the alternator and the exhaust had fractured. The contact then contacted the dealer who informed him that the engine needed to be replaced per the instructions on Honda Technical Service Bulletin Number: 10-048. However, the dealer advised the contact that the 10 year extended warranty had expired and he had to pay out-of-pocket for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 102,000.

My car overheated last week and now has a cracked engine. Yes, my car is available for inspection but my car will be repaired in a couple days. My safety was put at risk since my car gave me no warning signs of overheating. I had absolutely no problems with this car beforehand and out of nowhere my engine cracked and my car overheated. I was lucky that my car didn't start steaming and breaking down. The problem has not been confirmed by a dealer, I am trying to work that out with them since this years model has a recall for overheating. It has been, however, confirmed by my mechanic that my mileage is extremely low for this to happen and to call Honda for reimbursement. The vehicle has been inspected by my local mechanic. There were absolutely no warning signs of my car overheating other than my air conditioning malfunctioning, that was the only sign of overheating that I had other than it showing on the temperature bar on the left side of my cars dashboard that the temperature was too high. My car overheated on Thursday (7/14) and the first sign that something was wrong was when my AC malfunctioned on Tuesday (7/12). I took my car straight to a mechanic on Thursday when I saw my car overheating.

My temperature gauge for the coolant went to the highest mark and then my car overheated. At the time, I was driving really early in the morning and in a secluded area where it would be difficult to obtain help. Eventually I pulled over and noticed there was a coolant leak. My coolant was near empty. I took my car to a mechanic and found out that the engine block was cracked. I have had the car for approximately 3 months. My mechanic told me that this is a common occurrence with this model. I had no idea. The vehicle is available for request upon inspection.

While driving to work, the owner noticed a smoke coming out of the hood. The owner also noticed that engine temperature shot all the way up indicating that the engine might be overheating. Upon taking to a nearest auto shop, the owner was told that the engine block has a crack which is causing leak. Honda is aware of this issue and has provided extended warranty for 10 more years from the date of purchase. Unfortunately, the owner experienced cracked engine block issue 14 years after the date of purchase - 4 years after the extended warranty had expired. Upon calling the dealership, the owner was informed to file a claim with North America Honda. If Honda was aware of cracked engine block, why did it not replace engines in all affected models and trim levels?

Inspected Honda civic was gonna do a water pump replacement, but water pump was not the issue. Issue is a cracked engine block that leaks coolant form the defective casting , read thatbits a common issue with 2006-2008 Hondas , car can travel with out overheating.

The engine block was designed or manufactured in a way where certain 06-08 honda civics would crack. Many people experience this problem and it is extremely dangerous for honda to be allowed to manufacture an engine block that cracks.

This one happend to my 18yrs brother in law . He using my car to get to his school i dont know what happend he said brake didnt went through . No injury got a car crash thats all . But the sad thing is my insurance went up and the car history gonna be under my safety driver record . Dmv said im a good driver thats why they email me a safety driver number to renew my license no waiting in line . Maybe next renewal im not gonna get that treatment again

My 2008 Honda Civic engine block cracked on 09-08-2021. Honda had a class action settlement for this issue and extended the warranty 10 years from first purchased date a couple years ago. Well mine finally cracked and its been 13years from the first purchased date. So the repairs are not covered under the extended warranty. I feel Honda should still fix this issue regardless if the extended 10 year warranty is expired.

Having a lot of problems, coolant leaking, when in park. Power steering, engine idles when in park and at a stop light.When passing on the brake the car idles so have to push really hard on brake. Passenger air bag light never turns on. Ac blows hot air then cold then hot again. The car makes a really loud noise from the engine and wants to go even in neutral or if my foot is on the brake. Windshield leaks when it rains, roof trip flaps all over the place. Passenger door locks will not unlock except if you manually push it. Head lights flicker and the growling noise from the hood is really scary

THE BLOCK CRACKED CAUSING A ANTIFREEZE LEAK. HONDA EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON 08 CIVICS AN EXTRA 10 YEARS FROM ORIGINAL WARRANTY WHICH WOULD ALLOW MY CIVIC TO STILL BE UNDER WARRANTY. I CONTACTED HONDA AND THEY TOLD ME THE WARRANTY ONLY PERTAINED TO FIRST OWNERS. I SUSPECT MY PROBLEM OCCURRED ON WEDNESDAY 4/21/2021 AS I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK. I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR 7 MONTH AGO AND REPLACED BRAKES, ROTORS, A TIRE, REPAIRED A BROKEN LUGNUT, AND NOW THE ENGINE HAS OVERHEATED AND BLOWN AND IS EVIDENTLY NOT COVERED UNDER THE PREVIOUS WARRANTY BECAUSE IT IS PAST EXPIRATION (YEAR AND MILEAGE). PUTTING A USED ENGINE INTO THE VEHICLE IS NOT GOING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM, AND MY DEALERSHIP IS NOT WILLING TO PUT A NEW ONE IN. WHEN IT BEGAN OVERHEATING, I HAD JUST PULLED ONTO THE HIGHWAY (AVERAGE SPEED OF ABOUT 50) AND NOTICED THAT MY HEAT WASN'T WORKING (WHICH WAS WEIRD SINCE I HAD REPLACED THE THERMOSTAT ALREADY A FEW WEEKS PRIOR) AND THEN THE CAR READ AS HOT AS POSSIBLE. WHEN I SAFELY PULLED OVER, THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND IT WAS TOWED TO A RELIABLE MECHANIC WHO SAID IT WAS THE COOLANT LEAKING FROM THE ENGINE BLOCK, BUT WAS NOT PART OF THE WARRANTY ANYMORE.

HONDA EXTENDED A WARRANTY FOR 2006-2008 CIVICS TO REPLACE DEFECTIVE ENGINE BLOCKS. I HAVE A 2008 CIVIC THAT HAS VERY LOW MILEAGE SO I WAS UNAWARE OF THIS ISSUE UNTIL NOW. THEY WILL NOT HONOR THEIR REPLACEMENT WARRANTY, NOR DID THE DEALERSHIP SAY ANYTHING TO ME WHEN I HAD MY CAR SERVICED THERE SEVERAL TIMES A YEAR SINCE 2015. WHY WOULD THEY NOT SAY SOMETHING? NOW I'M LEFT WITH A CAR THAT IS USELESS AND I BET THE DEALERSHIP I HAVE PURCHASED MORE THAN 5 CARS FROM WILL TAKE IT AS A TRADE IN. NEXT DAY REFILLED RADIATOR WITH COOLANT & AFTER STARTING CAR NOTICED COOLANT LEAKING ON GROUND AT FRONT RIGHT SIDE OF ENGINE. I COULD NOT LOCATE LEAK. DROVE TO NEAREST HONDA SERVICE DEPARTMENT & AT SERVICE (VIA PRESSURE TEST OF ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM) A CRACK IN ENGINE BLOCK BETWEEN CYL. 1 & 2 WAS LOCATED. I WAS TOLD BY SERVICE TECH THAT HONDA IS AWARE OF ENGINE BLOCK CRACK/ DEFECT & INSTEAD OF ISSUING A SERVICE RECALL WHAT THEY DID WAS A WARRANTY EXTENSION OF 10 YEARS. HOWEVER, THAT WARRANTY EXPIRED 2 YEARS AGO. SERVICE MANAGER CALLED AMERICAN HONDA CORP. FOR GOODWILL ASSISTANCE TO TRY & HELP WITH REPAIRS BUT AMERICAN HONDA REJECTED/ DECLINED THE REQUEST & HAS LEFT ME WITHOUT A VEHICLE. I AM NOT ABLE TO PAY FOR A NEW ENGINE. I HAVE NO CAR FOR WORK, FOR MY MOM/ DAD DOCTOR VISITS/ FOR SUPERMARKET/ FOR LIFE. COSTS OF REPAIR ARE ARE ABOVE $5,000. HONDA CORP DENIED ME ASSISTANCE BECAUSE VEHICLE AGE IS PAST THEIR 10 YEAR EXTENSION PERIOD. I'M SECOND OWNER ON THIS VEHICLE AND DIDN'T REALIZE THERE WAS A POTENTIAL ENGINE MANUFACTURING DEFECT WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR (FIRST OWNER DID NOT DISCLOSE THIS). ESTIMATED KBB VALUE WAS $4500-5000 WHICH NOW IS A NEAR TOTAL LOSS AND SALVAGE VALUE. COST FOR REPAIR IS EQUAL OR HIGHER THAN RETAIL VALUE. VEHICLE HAS WELL DOCUMENTED SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE RECORD. SEEMS UNFAIR FOR THIS MANUFACTURING DEFECT TO PLACE ALL THE COST ON THE OWNER WHEN THERE IS NO OWNER CAUSE FOR THIS PROBLEM.

BECAUSE I DRIVE SO LITTLE MILES PER YEAR, PROBLEM HAPPENED JUST AFTER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY THEY HAD TO 'RESOLVE' THIS PROBLEM FOR OWNERS. WHY WOULDN'T THEY TELL ME ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BEFORE THEY KNEW ABOUT IT. HAD TO MAKE TOO MANY PHONE CALLS TO FINALLY HAVE THEM REPLACE THE ENGINE FOR $3500. 2008 HONDA CIVIC GOT A CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK 2 WEEKS AFTER PURCHASING. FOUND OUT THIS WAS A DEFECT THAT AFFECTED 2006-2009 HONDA CIVICS. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL ON THIS AND NOT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. TAKATA RECALL I CAME HOME FROM A 200 MILE TRIP & NOTICED COOLANT LEAKING FROM ENGINE WHEN I GOT OFF MY CAR AT MY HOUSE. THE ENGINE DID NOT GET HOT OR DID THE TEMPERATURE GAGE MOVE TO INDICATE ENGINE WAS HOT. I HAVE OWNED MY 2008 HONDA CIVIC SINCE 09/05/2009 & NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES. I REMEMBERED I HAD A LETTER FROM HONDA MAILED TO ME ABOUT 10 YR EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE ENGINE OF MY CIVIC . I DID NOT HAVE ANY ISSUES WITH THE ENGINE UP UNTIL JULY 2018. I WAS IN DISBELIEF THAT THE WARRANTY HAD ALREADY BEEN EXPIRED. I WAS SO UPSET THAT I ALWAYS TOOK GOOD CARE OF MY CAR. I CHANGED OIL WHEN IT WAS SUPPOSED TO FLUIDS WERE NEVER LOW. THE DEALERSHIP SAID WARRANTY EXPIRED GAVE ME A BILL STATING ,SHORT ENGINE BLOCK ,RADIATOR ASSY, THERMOSTAT, RADIATIOR HOSES, BYPASS HOSES, TOTAL COST $7504.99 PARTS & LABOR HONDA WOULD COVER PORTION OF THE BILL. THEY DIDNT STATE WHAT PORTION OF THE BILL OR HOW MUCH OF THE BILL THEY WOULD COVER. I AM OUTRAGED THAT I PAID $16,450.00 FOR A HONDA CIVIC WITH A DEFECTIVE ENGINE. HONDA HAS KNOWN ABOUT THE DEFECT IT HAS ON ITS ENGINES AND SOLD ME A HARD WORKING AMERICAN CONSUMER A DEFECTIVE VEHICLE. HONDA SHOULD HAVE RECALLED THIER LEAKING COOLANT ENGINE PRODUCT. AFTER SOME RESEARCH IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT '06-'09 HONDAS HAD FAULTY ENGINES KNOWINGLY INSTALLED WHICH RESULTED IN HONDA OF AMERICA ISSUING A WARRANTY EXTENSION FOR 10 YEARS FOR THIS CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK ERROR. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE ON 8/14/15 COMPLETELY UNAWARE OF THE FAULTY ENGINE, THE EXTENDED WARRANTY, OR THE COST IT WOULD BE TO ME. I CONTACTED HONDA OF AMERICA ON 3/7/19 TO INQUIRE ABOUT THE WARRANTY AND THE COMPLIMENTARY REPLACEMENT/REPAIRS FOR THEIR POOR CRAFTSMANSHIP. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE WARRANTY EXPIRED AND DOES NOT APPLY TO ME SINCE I AM NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE CAR. TURNS OUT HONDA ONLY SENT OUT ONE NOTICE OF THE WARRANTY EXTENSION AND IT WENT TO THE FIRST OWNERS OF THE HONDAS WHO PURCHASED THE CARS OFF A DEALERSHIP LOT. SECONDHAND OWNERS, LIKE ME, HAD NO CHANCE OF EVEN KNOWING THERE WAS A RECALL OR OPPORTUNITY TO GET THIS "TIME BOMB" OF A REPAIR FIXED UNTIL IT'S TOO LATE. AFTER A MONTH OF HAVING NO CAR AND COMMUNICATING WITH HONDA OF AMERICA AND THE MECHANIC, ROCKINGHAM HONDA QUOTED THE REPAIR TO COST $5,600 (WHICH IS TWICE THE AMOUNT OF WHAT KELLEY BLUE BOOK VALUES THE CAR TO BE WORTH). HONDA OF AMERICA SAID THAT SINCE I HAVE NO RECORD OF GETTING THE CAR SERVICED AT ANY OF THEIR LOCATIONS THAT IT'S "NOT THEY'RE PROBLEM" THE WARRANTY EXPIRED AND I HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE OFFER. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT '06-'09 USED HONDAS, ARE DRIVING A WITH A FAULTY ENGINE, COMPLETELY UNAWARE OF THE DANGER AND DAMAGES THEY ARE ABOUT TO INCUR DUE TO HONDA'S INABILITY TO FOLLOW UP WITH THEIR PRODUCT.

I WAS STILL HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR SPURTING FORWARD WITHOUT WARNING, SO THEY SUGGESTED THAT I TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHICH I DID. IT WAS THE IDLER CAUSING PROBLEMS. I ASKED ONE OF THE EMPLOYEE HANDLING MY CAR THAT MORNING IF THERE HAD BEEN ANY RECALLS OR PROBLEMS WITH THE HONDA CIVIC CARS AND I WAS TOLD NO. THEN I WENT ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT THERE HAD BEEN MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE ENGINE BLOCK CRACKING AND HAVING TO BE REPLACED. SINCE I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE ENGINE, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT TO DO NOW IN TERMS OF REIMBURSEMENT.

MY USED 2008 HONDA CIVIC WAS OVERHEATING AND I DROPPED IT OFF AT MY GARAGE FOR EVALUATION. ON 2/14/2019, MY MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT MY ENGINE BLOCK WAS CRACKED AND WAS UNDER WARRANTY. I CONTACTED NORTH AMERICAN HONDA, INC. AND REQUESTED THEY REPLACE THE ENGINE UNDER WARRANTY. THEY REFUSED AS THE CAR WAS TOTALED AND SALVAGED. I HAD NEVER BEEN NOTIFIED ABOUT THE PROBLEMS WITH 2006-2009 CIVIC ENGINES AND THE WARRANTY. HAD I BEEN NOTIFIED BY HONDA, WHEN MY CAR WAS TOTALED IN 2014 BECAUSE OF A SEVERE HAIL STORM, I WOULD HAVE ACCEPTED THE $10,000 FROM THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND BOUGHT A REPLACEMENT CAR. SINCE MY CAR IN 2014 WAS SIX YEARS OLD, I THOUGHT THAT ALL WARRANTIES HAD EXPIRED LONG AGO AND SALVAGING THE CAR APPEARED TO BE A GOOD DEAL. I GOT $10K AND HAD A MECHANICALLY AND OPERATIONALLY SOUND VEHICLE WITH LOW MILEAGE. RESEARCH HAS SINCE SHOWN THAT HUNDREDS OF CIVIC OWNERS WERE NOT NOTIFIED AND HONDA ROUTINELY STRICTLY ENFORCES THE WARRANTY. FOR FOUR YEARS HONDA WAS SELLING A DEFECTIVE CAR AND DOING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO HIDE FROM THE PUBLIC. MANY OWNERS RECOUNTED THE CAR JUST SHUTTING DOWN ON THEM. I OFTEN DROVE IN 70MPH SPEED LIMIT ZONES ON THE PA TURNPIKE IN HEAVY COMMUTER TRAFFIC. HAD MY ENGINE SHUT DOWN SUDDENLY THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT POSSIBILITY THAT I WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED IN THE SUBSEQUENT ACCIDENT. THIS WAS OBVIOUSLY A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY NHTSA DID NOT FORCE HONDA TO ISSUE A PROVISIONAL RECALL. ALSO, HONDA SHOULD HAVE ISSUED AN UNLIMITED WARRANTY INSTEAD OF RESTRICTING THE WARRANTY TO 10 YEARS FROM DATE OF PURCHASE. IT APPEARS TO BE A CASE OF UNFAIR AND DECEPTIVE BUSINESS PRACTICE AT BEST AND OUTRIGHT FRAUD AT THE WORST.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IN ITS' TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS, HONDA DESCRIBES THE MANUFACTURING DEFECT AS "THE ENGINE (CYLINDER) BLOCK MAY LEAK COOLANT" . HOWEVER, IT IS NOT A SLOW LEAK, BECAUSE THE ENGINE COOLANT SYSTEM IS UNDER PRESSURE, WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING, WHEN THE ENGINE BLOCK CRACKS ALL THE COOLANT IS SUDDEN EXPELLED FROM THE SYSTEM FORCING A MOTORIST TO IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER. I PURCHASED A 2008 HONDA CIVIC IN MAY OF 2018. I BROUGHT IT TO A MECHANIC TO MAKE SURE THE CAR WAS IN GOOD ENOUGH SHAPE TO GET ME FROM MASSACHUSETTS TO MONTANA AS I HAD JUST GRADUATED COLLEGE AND WAS MOVING FOR MY FIRST JOB. I WAS FOUR HOURS INTO MY TREK WHEN MY CAR BROKE DOWN LEAVING MY MOTHER AND I COMPLETELY STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE IN NEW YORK. WE HAD TO GET THE CAR TOWED AND FOUND OUT 3 DAYS LATER IT WAS A CRACK IN THE ENGINE BLOCK (A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN THESE HONDA CIVICS). THE REASON THE ENGINE BLOCK CRACKED WAS BECAUSE HONDA USED A CHEAPER METAL. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD US IT WOULD COST AROUND $6,000 BECAUSE THE 10 YEAR WARRANTY ENDED. MY MOTHER AND I WERE STRANDED FOR 4 DAYS WHILE WE WAITED THIS OUT. I AM THANKFUL EVERYDAY THIS DIDN'T OCCUR IN THE MID-WEST OF THE COUNTRY WHERE THERE IS NO CELL SERVICE AS WE WOULD HAVE BEEN STRANDED WITH NO FOOD OR WATER AND NO WAY TO CONTACT ANYONE. THIS CAR STARTED LEAKING COOLANT ON THE DRIVEWAY. ONE DAY LATER MY WIFE DRIVES CAR AND WHEN SHE RETURNS HOME STEAM IS COMING FROM ENGINE AND A LOT MORE COOLANT IS LEAKING ON DRIVEWAY. TOWED IT TO THE DEALER. TURNS OUT THERE IS A FACTOR DEFECT CAUSING ENGINE BLOCK TO CRACK PREMATURELY. LUCKILY ENGINE DIDN'T OVERHEAT AND LOCK-UP WHILE ON THE FREEWAY. SCARY THAT THE SYMPTOMS AND ONSET OF CRACK WERE SO SUDDEN. ONLY STARTED DRIPPING ON DRIVEWAY ONE DAY PREVIOUS TO NEAR OVERHEAT. I NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATION FROM HONDA IN REGARDS TO THE ISSUE AS THEY CLAIM I WOULD HAVE IN THEIR TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 10-048. HONDA SAYS IT IS RELATED TO A DEFECT IN THE ENGINE BUT WILL ONLY COVER 25% OF THE COST CAUSE ITS OUT OF WARRANTY BECAUSE THEY GO BY THE DELIVERY DATE, NOT THE PURCHASE DATE WHICH THE SERVICE BULLETIN STATES. HONDA DOES NOT NOTIFY CUSTOMERS WHO ARE THINKING ABOUT BUYING THESE CARS ARE AWARE THAT THERE MAY BE AN ISSUES.

ENGINE BLOCK COOLANT LEAK I BOUGHT THIS 2008 HONDA CIVIC IN WINCHESTER VA ON 1/13/2018 FRO S&W AUTO1908 VALLEY AVE WINCHESTER VA ON VALLEY AVE. THEY STATED IT HAD A NEW ENGINE THAT IT HAD BEEN REPLACED BY HONDA DUE TO BLOCK BEING REPLACED IN 2006 TO 2008 BECAUSE THE DEVELOPED A COOLANT LEAK. ON 1/16/2018 AFTER BUYING IT CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND GAUAGE FOR HOT/COLD WENT TO HOT. TOOK IT BACK TO S&W AFTER CALLING AS THEY INSTRUCTED ME TO. THEY STATED WAS A LOOSE WIRE AND THAT SHOULD TAKE CARE OF IT AND NOT TO WORRY IF THAT HOT/COLD THING SHOULD HOT AGAIN. HOWEVER IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON JULY 8 2018 AND MY CAR WOULD NOT START. TSB#10-048 HONDA CIVIC (2006-2009) ENGINE CYLINDER BLOCK CRACK. I NEVER RECEIVED A NOTICE ABOUT THIS TSB. ON MAY 23, 2018, WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY 78 MILES FROM HOME, MY A/C STOPPED WORKING AND THE TEMP. GAUGE WAS UP TO H. I IMMEDIATELY PUT THE HEAT ON TO COOL THE ENGINE. THEN I STOPPED FOR A HALF HOUR TO LET IT COOL. AFTER ARRIVING HOME AND UPON INSPECTION WE NOTICED THAT ALL THE COOLANT WAS GONE. ACCORDING TO A PARTS PERSON AT HONDA THIS CRACK DOESN'T HAVE ANY PHYSICAL WARNING SIGNS UNTIL IT OVERHEATS. . TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 10-048, I RECENTLY PURCHASED THE CAR, FAILED MY MOTOR VEHICLE INSPECTION DUE TO GASKET ISSUES. I FOUND OUT THE SAME DAY THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE 2008 HONDA CIVIC ENGINES AFTER GETTING MY AIRBAGS FIXED (DUE TO A RECALL @HONDA). I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO HONDA TODAY TO FIND OUT IF MY CAR QUALIFIES FOR THE ENGINE BLOCK RECALL, EVEN IF I JUST BOUGHT THE CAR. I AM WAITING FOR A RESPONSE FROM THEIR CORPORATE OFFICE ABOUT THIS MATTER, ESPECIALLY SINCE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE.

MY CAR IS A 2008 HONDA CIVIC LX MODEL. ON MARCH, 15 2018 WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE CAR STOPPED RUNNING AND SMOKE CAME OUT OF THE HOOD SUDDENLY. NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON THE DASHBOARD TILL THE LAST MOMENT. FORTUNATELY I MANAGED TO PULL OVER THE CAR TO A SAFE PLACE IMMEDIATELY BESIDE THE HIGHWAY OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN A FATAL SITUATION. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY MECHANIC WHERE THEY PERFORMED THE DIAGNOSIS TO FIND THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. THEY IDENTIFIED THAT THERE WAS CRACK IN THE ENGINE BLOCK WHICH HAS CAUSED THE COOLANT TO LEAK FROM THE ENGINE AND HENCE OVERHEATING OF THE ENGINE HAS HAPPENED AND MADE IT TO MALFUNCTION. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE WHOLE ENGINE HAS TO BE REPLACED (USED ONE) AND FEW OTHER PARTS AS WELL (LIKE SPARK PLUG ETC.) TO MAKE THE CAR RUNNING AGAIN WHICH WOULD COST ME AROUND $2500. IT WAS DEVASTATING TO HEAR THIS. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT MOST OF THE 2006 TO 2009 CIVICS HAD THIS ENGINE CRACK ISSUE AND HONDA IS ALSO AWARE OF THIS. DESPITE THIS HONDA HAS NOT CALLED FOR THE RECALL OF SUCH THOSE ENGINES AND JUST DID A WARRANTY EXTENSION. TSB 10-048 WAS ISSUED FOR THIS. BUT STILL A LOT OF 2006-2009 HONDA CIVICS ARE FACING THIS ISSUE EVEN AT VERY LOW MILES LIKE MINE. MINE HAS 166,000 MILES. I CHECKED WITH THE SERVICE CONSULTANT IF THIS WOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. SHE DID A VIN INQUIRY AND SAID THAT MAY CAR IS STILL IN WARRANTY (THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE DATE OF THE CAR WAS 20-APRIL- 2008 AND THIS INCIDENT HAPPENED TO ME ON -15 MARCH-2018). THIS IS A BIG BLOW TO ME. I RAISED THIS CONCERN WITH HONDA CORPORATE AND THEY FILED A CASE.WITH NUMBER 07506763 WITH COUPLE OF DAYS LATER (ON 09/07/2017) THE CASE MANAGER PROBABLY WILL CALL ME ON MONDAY MARCH 18, 2018.

ENGINE DEVELOPED A CRACK IN THE SIDE AND A COOLANT LEAK. THIS IS A KNOWN DEFECT AND HONDA HAS A WARRANTY CAMPAIGN BUT WON'T REPLACE MY ENGINE DUE TO A SALVAGE TITLE BECAUSE OF A THEFT RECOVERY, NOT AN ENGINE REBUILD OR ENGINE DAMAGE. THE CAR ONLY HAS 42000 MILES. THE REPLACEMENT HAS BEEN QUOTED AT ABOUT $4400. THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN IS 10-048 AND I THINK HONDA IS JUST AVOIDING RESPONSIBILITY TO REPLACE THE ENGINE DUE TO THE SALVAGE TITLE TECHNICALITY. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HONDA AND I OWN THREE NOW. I WILL TELL EVERYONE I KNOW ABOUT THE RISKS OF POOR QUALITY ENGINEERING AND UNACCEPTABLE CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT HONDA HAS DISPLAYED IN THIS CIRCUMSTANCE. THERE NEEDS TO BE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE CAR STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY ALL LIGHTS ON DASHBOARD TURNED ON. CALLED 911 FOR ASSISTANCE SINCE COULDN'T EXIT THE VEHICLE. CAR WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP NEAR WHERE THE INCIDENT OCCURRED. SHOP DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE SEIZED DUE TO ENGINE OVERHEATING. AFTER I FOUND OUT THAT THE ENGINE OVERHEATED AND SEIZED I TOOK MY CAR TO HONDA FOR DIAGNOSIS BECAUSE SOMETIME AFTER I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE, I WAS NOTIFIED BY HONDA THAT THE ENGINE MAY EXPERIENCE COOLANT SEEPAGE THAT CAN RESULT IN ENGINE OVERHEATING, THUS AMERICAN HONDA EXTENDED THE WARRANTY OF THE ENGINE TO 10 YEARS FROM ORIGINAL DATE OF PURCHASE WITH NO MILEAGE LIMIT. MY CAR WAS ONLY 9 YEARS OLD WITH ONLY 64,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. HONDA SERVICE ACKNOWLEDGED THE ENGINE OVERHEATED DUE TO COOLANT SEEPAGE BUT UNFORTUNATELY THEY REFUSED TO HONOR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY THEY OFFERED ORIGINALLY. VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH HONDA FOR NOT RECALLING THESE ENGINES FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, INSTEAD OF PUTTING THEIR CUSTOMERS IN DANGER OF VERY SERIOUS SITUATIONS SUCH AS THE ONE I DESCRIBED.

ENGINE SEEMS TO BE LEAKING RADIATOR FLUID FROM THE ENGINE BLOCK DUE TO POOR CRAFTSMANSHIP / MATERIALS. THIS IS A CRITICAL SAFETY CONCERN THAT COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE THE ENGINE TO HAVE A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE WHILE UNDER POWER. HONDA CURRENTLY HAS A SERVICE BULLETIN ON THIS 10-048. HOWEVER, IT DOES NOT COVER ALL VEHICLES. IN MY CASE, I HAVE A VEHICLE THAT HAS SALVAGED TITLE DUE TO DAMAGE IN REAR RIGHT QUARTER PANEL. NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ENGINE. WHEN I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN TO BE CHECKED, THE HONDA DEALER DID STATE THAT THIS VEHICLE HAS THE EXACT PROBLEM AS 10-048, BUT WOULD NOT HONOR THE WARRANTY DUE TO IT'S SALVAGE TITLE. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM DUE TO THE HIGH RISK POTENTIAL OF A DEADLY ACCIDENT. THIS SHOULD BE REVIEWED BY NHTSA AND ESCALATED AS A RECALL ITEM.

NHTSA REF# 10030876, TSB REF#SB-08-044 AND SERVICE BULLETIN 10-048. HONDA PUT A 10 YR EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE ENGINES FROM THE ORIGINAL DATE OF PURCHASE. MY CAR WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED ON 09/27/2007. MY CAR BROKE DOWN ON 10/02/2017, 5 DAYS PAST THE WARRANTY PERIOD. HONDA HAS REFUSED TO REPLACE MY ENGINE BLOCK, GIVING NO GRACE PERIOD ON THIS WARRANTY. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND MY CAR ONLY HAS 107,XXX MILES WHICH IS NOT A LOT BY TODAY'S STANDARDS.I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM AND FURTHERMORE HONDA SHOULD HAVE PUT A MILEAGE AMOUNT ON THE WARRANTY AS WELL.

CAR BEGAN TO OVERHEAT WITH NORMAL USE. IN AN ATTEMPT TO FIX THE ISSUE, A REPUTABLE LOCAL REPAIR SHOP REPLACED PARTS TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE, NOT FULLY DIAGNOSING THE ISSUE THATS FOUND WITHIN BULLETIN 10-048. THE SHOP CORRECTLY DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE, HOWEVER WERE NOT AWARE OF THE RECALL. THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED WITH GENUINE HONDA PARTS. I WENT THROUGH THE RECALL REFUND PROCESS FOR 8 FULL MONTHS AFTER SUPPLYING ALL OF THE RELEVANT INVOICES, VEHICLE MAINTENANCE HISTORY, ETC. AND WAS DENIED ON THE BASIS THAT THE INVOICES HAD THE PREVIOUS DIAGNOSIS LISTED THAT WAS INCORRECT, BELOW THE CORRECT DIAGNOSIS OF A CRACKED ENGINE. HONDA IS NOT HONORING THEIR RECALL REFUND IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. HONDA THEN ATTEMPTED TO OFFER ME A COUPON FOR FUTURE SERVICE REPAIRS, CLEARLY SHOWING THAT THEY RECOGNIZE I HAD A CASE, HOWEVER SIMPLY DID NOT WANT TO PAY OUT THE PRICE OF THE REPLACED ENGINE. NOTE THE DATE LISTED BELOW IS THE DATE MY CLAIM WAS FINALLY REJECTED. AFTER WAITING 8 MONTHS.

THE MOUNTS WERE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT I SUSPECT AT LEAST ONE MAY STILL BE CRACKED OR BAD. A SEPARATE MECHANIC FROM THE DEALERSHIP SAID THE ENGINE LITERALLY COULD BE MOVED BY PUSHING ON IT BEFORE THE BUSHING/MOUNTS WERE FIXED.

I WOULD LIKE TO TRY AND GET HONDA TO ANNOUNCE A RECALL SO THAT EVERYONE WHO HAS SAME PROBLEM CAN GET THEIR CAR FIXED. "BURNING OIL" WE PURCHASED THE CAR AT THURSTON AUTO IN UKIAH CA. IT HAS BURNED EXCESSIVE OIL FROM DAY ONE. IT BURNS 1 QUART EVERY THOUSAND MILES. HONDA TOLD ME THAT IS COMMON FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE ENGINES. THURSTON CONDUCTED THEIR OWN TEST AND DID FIND THE ENGINE WAS BURNING 1 QUART EVERY THOUSAND MILES. THEY SAID THE WOULD PUT A NEW ENGINE IN BUT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY HALF. THIS WAS MY DAUGHTERS FIRST CAR PURCHASE AND FEELS SHE WAS TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. SHE WENT ON HER OWN TO PURCHASE THE CAR. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THERE IS ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE. SHE HAS BEEN TRYING FOR YEARS TO SAVE THE MONEY FOR A NEW ENGINE.

HEAD OF THE TENSION BOLT FOR THE IDLER PULLEY BROKE WHILE DRIVING THE CAR. TOOK IT INTO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS A COMMON ISSUE, AND THAT THEY COULD EITHER DRILL IT OUT, OR IT WAS STUCK AND A NEW ENGINE BLOCK WAS NEEDED. IN THIS CASE A NEW BLOCK WAS NEEDED. DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THIS ISSUE REVEALED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS BOLT BREAKING ON THE 2006 CIVIC, WHICH IS OF THE SAME GENERATION AND HAS THE SAME ENGINE AS MY 2008 CIVIC. MY CAR ONLY HAS APPROXIMATELY 86,000 MILES ON IT. HAD THE IDLER PULLEY COME OFF AFTER THE BOLD HEAD HAD BROKE, THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THE FACT THAT THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN RECALLED IN A PREVIOUS MODEL YEAR, AND PERSISTS THROUGH A FUTURE MODEL YEAR MAKES ME WORRY ABOUT OTHERS. THE BOLT IS ALSO NOT SOMETHING THAT IS CALLED FOR TO BE REGULARLY REPLACED. CALLING HONDA YIELDED NO ASSISTANCE OR CONCERN IN THIS MATTER.

SHORTLY AFTER RECEIVING A VOLUNTARY WARRANTY EXTENSION/ RECALL MY WIFE'S 2008 HONDA CIVIC LX 4 DR. EXPERIENCE AN ENGINE BLOCK CRACK AFTER DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. I DROVE IT TO THE DEALER IN WAUKESHA, WI WHERE IS WAS CONFIRMED AS A CRACK. SINCE THE REPLACEMENT I HAVE EXPERIENCED ISSUED WITH THE NEW BLOCK INCLUDING A KNOCKING SOUND IN THE ENGINE AT LOW RPM'S I WAS ADVISED BY HONDA IN CA THAT THE BLOCK IS NEW HOWEVER THE OLDER INTERNAL ENGINE BLOCK PARTS WERE BEING REUSED TO INCLUDE THE CRANK, PISTONS, ETC. I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR WITH 119,000 MILES ON IT FROM A DEALERSHIP. IT WAS OK FOR THE FIRST FIVE DAYS UNTIL I NOTICED THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG. ON MY WAY BACK HOME, I NOTICED THE READING ON THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE RISING. IT KEPT RISING ALMOST TO THE RED MARKER. I WAS VERY STRESSED. I FINALLY FIGURED OUT THAT MY COOLANT RESERVOIR WAS COMPLETELY EMPTY. MY TEMPORARY SOLUTION WAS TO ADD SOME COOLANT TO THE RADIATOR AND TO THE RESERVOIR. SO FAR THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE HAS REMAINED AT A GOOD AND STEADY TEMPERATURE. THERE IS A COOLANT LEAK IN MY CAR BUT I CAN'T FIND IT. HOPEFULLY, HONDA WILL TAKE A LOOK AT IT AND DETERMINE THE PROBLEM.

I WAS MAKING A LEFT TURN LEAVING MY PLACE OF WORK. THE CAR MADE A LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED (POWER STEERING WENT) AND A/C STOPPED WORKING. I IMMEDIATELY PARKED THE CAR AND THE NEXT DAY HAD IT TOWED TO A HONDA DEALERSHIP. UPON INSPECTION, THE WATER PUMP SEIZED UP. THE PULLEY AND LOCK BOLT HOLDING THE SERPENTINE BELT HAD PRACTICALLY FALLEN OFF. THIS WAS CONFIRMED BY A HONDA DEALERSHIP TECHNICIAN. THE CAR HAS LOW MILEAGE, I AM THE FIRST OWNER, AND THE CAR HAS ONLY BEEN SERVICED AT A HONDA DEALERSHIP. I WILL ALSO REFERENCE A SERVICE BULLETIN ISSUED ON 2006 HONDA CIVICS. THERE IS NO RECALL ON 2008'S EVEN THOUGH IT CONTAINS THE SAME R18 ENGINE (ENGINE BLOCK CRACKING PROBLEMS) AS THE 2006 AND 2007. UPON LEAVING MY PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT, I HAD DRIVEN APPROX 1 MILE TO A TRAFFIC SIGNAL AND NOTICED A SLIGHT VAPOR PLUME AT THE FRONT OF THE CAR. NOTED A SLIGHTLY ELEVATED COOLANT TEMP (3 LEDS ABOVE NORMAL) AND PULLED OVER. OPENING THE HOOD REVEALED A CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK ON THE EXHAUST SIDE OF THE ENGINE BLOCK BEHIND AND TO THE RIGHT OF THE EXHAUST COLLECTOR. NO KIND OF ABUSE OR OVERHEATING HAS EVER OCCURRED WITH THIS ENGINE SINCE PURCHASED NEW. NO INDICATION OF A COOLANT LEAK WAS APPARENT UPON PARKING AT WORK BEFORE THIS DISCOVERY (NO ODOR, OR VAPOR PRESENT). A HIGH MILEAGE ENGINE YES. ON 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS (THE MOST RECENT BEING 6/24/14), TWICE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND TWICE WHILE SLOWING DOWN, THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE HAS SURGED, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO UNEXPECTEDLY MOVE FORWARD. ON THE TWO OCCASIONS IT HAS OCCURRED WHEN SLOWING DOWN, I WAS OPERATING THE VEHICLE. WHAT HAPPENED WAS AS I WAS COMING TO A STOP (ONCE AT A RED LIGHT, ONCE IN A PARKING LOT), THE RPM INDICATOR UNEXPECTEDLY SHOT UP TO APPROXIMATELY 2500RPM, THE VEHICLE MOVED FORWARD, AND EVEN THOUGH I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, THE UNEXPECTED INCREASE IN POWER MADE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP. I SUFFERED A CONCUSSION AND CERVICAL NECK INJURY. THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS INVOLVED AND NO WEATHER CONDITIONS. ALSO I WAS GOING BELOW THE SPEED LIMIT. I CALLED HONDA AND THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT EXPLAIN NOR HELP ME WITH THE AIRBAG NOT DEPLOYING AND THE CONCUSSION I SUFFERED. 2008 HONDA CIVIC. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO ENGINE BLOCK FAILURE . *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE ENGINE BLOCK PROBLEM SHOULD BE TREATED AS A RECALL DUE TO THE SEVERITY OF THE PROBLEM. WHEN THE ENGINE OVERHEATED AND STALLED, HE LOST POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. AT THAT POINT, THE STEERING AND BRAKES BECAME VERY DIFFICULT. THE CONSUMER STOPPED TO THE DEALER, WHERE THEY SHOWED HIM THE 4 PROBLEM AREAS OF THE ENGINE WHERE THE LEAKAGE OCCURRED. ALSO, THE BEARING ON THE AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR PULLEY STARTED MAKING A NOISE. THE ENTIRE COMPRESSOR HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE CONSUMER ALSO HAD DIFFICULTY STARTING THE VEHICLE AND AFTER 10 SECONDS, THE VEHICLE WOULD START. ON OCCASION, HE HAD TROUBLE SHIFTING FROM FIRST TO SECOND GEAR. AT LESS THAN 55,000 MILES, I NOTICED MY 2008 HONDA CIVIC COUPE WOULD VIBRATE EXCESSIVELY WHILE IN REVERSE, ESPECIALLY DURING START UP. CHECKED ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. WENT TO A MECHANIC TO TAKE A LOOK, AND THEY FOUND 3 MOTOR MOUNTS CRACKED. AFTER REPLACING THE MOUNTS (NOT CHEAP), MY CIVIC NO LONGER VIBRATES ON REVERSE. IT WAS DEFINITELY CRACKED MOUNTS THAT CAUSED THIS ISSUE. I BOUGHT THIS CAR BRAND NEW IN 2008 AT THE HONDA DEALERSHIP, AND ALWAYS TAKE GREAT CARE OF MY CAR AND MAKE SURE ALL SERVICE IS DONE ON TIME. I WAS PARKING IN A HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT. I "ROLLED" INTO THE SPACE AND WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES THE ENGINE "ACCELERATED". I WENT OVER THE CEMENT BLOCK AT THE FRONT OF THE SPACE AND THROUGH A CHAINLINK FENCE AND ONTO THE SIDEWALK. USUALLY, THAT WALKWAY IS FILLED WITH CHILDREN. I INITIALLY THOUGHT THE FLOORMAT GOT CAUGHT UP UNDER THE GAS PEDAL. I TOOK PICTURES IMMEDIATELY AND IT DID APPEAR THAT EXACERBATED THE PROBLEM. BELL HONDA IN PHOENIX SAID "THEY COULD NOT REPEAT THE PROBLEM" AND DISMISSED ME. IT HAS SINCE HAPPENED TO MY DAUGHTER AND HUSBAND. FORTUNATELY THEY BOTH APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. AFTER THE LAST TIME, WE TOOK THE CAR TO SUPERSTITION SPRINGS HONDA. THEY SAID "THEY COULD NOT REPEAT THE PROBLEM AND NOTHING HAS COME FROM HONDA." I HAVE READ WHERE OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. NOTICED CAR WAS RUNNING LOUD WHEN STARTED AND LOUDER WHEN PUTTING IN REVERSE. BROUGHT CAR IN FOR 55,000 MILE SERVICE AND ALSO ASKED THEM TO CHECK OUT THE MOTOR MOUNTS, SINCE I HAD CHECK ON GOOGLE TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY ISSUES WITH 2008 CIVICS. YES CRACKED MOTOR MOUNTS IS AN ISSUE WITH 2007 AND 2008 CIVICS. SERVICE DEPARTMENT CONFIRMED THAT THERE WAS A CRACKED MOTOR MOUNT IN THE BACK OF THE ENGINE THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE TAKEN VERY GOOD CARE OF THIS CAR AND ALSO BRING IT IN FOR SERVICE ON TIME. VERY UPSET THAT THIS CAR ONLY HAS 54,702 MILES AND IT HAS A CRACKED MOTOR MOUNT. THIS CAR HAS BEEN IN A GARAGE FROM DAY ONE AND I ONLY DRIVE IT TO AND FROM WORK SINCE I PURCHASED THIS CAR NEW. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A DEFECT IN THE DESIGN AND SHOULD BE LOOKED AT FOR A POSSIBLE RECALL. THIS CAR IS HOUSED IN FLORIDA AND DOES NOT HAVE THE WINTER ELEMENTS OF THE NORTH. SINCE THE CAR HAS A TOTAL OF FOUR MOTOR MOUNTS WONDERING IF THEY WILL ALL START TO FAIL. SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME IT WOULD COST OVER $500 + DOLLARS TO REPAIR ONE. I EXITED FREEWAY AND WAS WAITING AT A RED SIGNAL LIGHT WHEN THE ENGINE ON ITS OWN SPEEDED UP TO 3000+ RPM. IT HELD AT THIS ELEVATED RPM FOR ABOUT A MINUTE WHILE THE CAR REMAINED STOPPED (FOOT BRAKE WAS HOLDING). THE ENGINE DROPPED BACK DOWN TO IDLE ON ITS OWN. HEADLIGHTS AND OCCUPANT HEATER WAS ON WITH FAN AT LOWEST SETTING. RADIO WAS ON. FLOOR MAT WAS NOT OUT OF PLACE. THE CAR WAS AT A STOP SIGN. IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED TO 2000 RPM FROM THE IDLE SPEED OF 850 RPM. IT THIS JUMPED UP TO 5500 TO 6000 RPM AND CONTINUED LIKE THAT UNTIL I STOPPED THE ENGINE. FORTUNATELY, I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, WHICH RESTRAINED IT SUFFICIENT UNTIL I WAS ABLE SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. I RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND IT CONTINUED TO ACCELERATED AT THE SAME SPEED. I STOPPED IT. AFTER THE THIRD TRY IT STARTED NORMALLY. IT HAD PREVIOUSLY JUMPED TO 850 TO 2000 RPM SEVERAL TIMES, BE IT NEVER WENT TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL BEFORE. *TR

CAR STARTED AT USUAL TIME AROUND 8 AM AND STARTED VIBRATING. A VERY LOUD EXHAUST NOISE STARTED TO BEGIN AND THE CAR BEGAN SHAKING. THE VIBRATING NOISE WAS SO LOUD AND EVERYONE IN THE CAR COULD FEEL THE VIBRATION. THE FRONT STEERING WHEEL AS WELL AS THE SEATS WERE ALSO SHAKING. VIBRATING CONTINUED THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND WAS GONE AT TIMES WHEN THIS FIRST BEGAN BUT AS DAYS WENT BY IT BECAME LOUDER AND MORE OBVIOUS BY OTHERS OUTSIDE OF THE CAR. THE CAR NOW CONTINUES TO VIBRATE NOT ONLY IN THE MORNING BUT AT ALL TIMES OF THE DAY. IT SHAKES AT PARK, DRIVE, AND REVERSE. CAR IS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE TO DRIVE AND THE NOISE CAN BECOME VERY DISTRACTING. THE CAR ALSO VIBRATES SO MUCH DURING THESE TIMES THAT I AM AFRAID THAT SOMETHING WILL HAPPEN ON THE HIGHWAY AND AM WORRIED ABOUT THIS. HONDA DEALER WILL NOT COVER THIS UNDER POWER TRAIN WARRANTY BECAUSE THE CAR IS NOW PASSED THE WARRANTY FOR POWER TRAIN WHICH IS 5 YEAR/60,000 MILES. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS MATTER. MY CAR WAS STOPPED IN LINE WHILE WAITING TO GO THROUGH US CUSTOMS. TRANSMISSION WAS IN DRIVE AND MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. ALL OF A SUDDEN, ENGINE STARTED TO REV. PLACED TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL POSITION. ENGINE REVVED THREE TIMES, EACH TIME HIGHER. ON THIRD REVVING, RPM REACHED 4000 RPM. TURNED OFF ENGINE AND RESTARTED. WHEN I RESTARTED THE ENGINE, THE ENGINE REVVED AT HIGH RPM AGAIN. TURNED OFF ENGINE, WAITED APPROXIMATELY 10 SECONDS. RESTARTED ENGINE AGAIN, AND ENGINE STARTED NORMALLY. TOOK CAR TO HONDA DEALER ON 7/23/12. DEALER WAS NOT ABLE TO FIND ANY TROUBLE CODES IN THE ENGINE COMPUTER. THIS IS VERY SIMILAR TO WHAT HAPPENED TWO YEARS AGO AT APPROX MILEAGE OF 45,000 MILES. ENGINE STARTED REVVING WHILE STOPPED AT A SIGNAL. CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO WAS NOT ABLE TO FIND ANYTHING WRONG. WATER PUMP PULLEY/TENSIONER QUIT AT 70 MPH. PUMP AND TENSIONER WERE REPLACED. SIX MONTHS LATER, CAR QUIT AGAIN, SAME THING. ONLY THIS TIME THE BOLT THAT MOUNTS THE TENSIONER SHEARED OFF IN THE ENGINE BLOCK. HONDA HAS RECALLED THIS VEHICLE IN 2006 AND 2007 FOR THIS SAME ISSUE. (SERVICE BULLETIN 248422 AND 248421) AND ACTION NUMBER NHTSA 10026791. NO RECALLS FOR 2008 YET. THEY HAVE REPLACED (UNDER SOME KIND OF WARRANTY) THE ENGINE BLOCK AND THE WATER PUMP/PULLEY/TENSIONER CAUSED BY THE SECOND BREAK DOWN. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL FOR 2008, AS WELL. MY WIFE WAS HEADED HOME FROM WORK (APPROXIMATELY 5 PM) WHEN SHE HAD TO STOP IN TRAFFIC ON A FAIRLY STEEP HILL, WITH AN OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE AT, OR NEAR, 100 DEGREES. WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED TO RESUME FORWARD SHE PRESSED THE GAS ON HER 2008 HONDA CIVIC HYBRID AND THE CAR STARTED TO ROLL BACKWARDS INTO ANOTHER CAR. THE TRANSMISSION WAS IN DRIVE, SHE SWITCHED TO THE LOWEST RANGE, STILL THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD. AS A RESULT, SHE HAD TO WAVE CARS BEHIND HER AROUND WHILE ALL SHE COULD DO WAS HOLD THE BRAKES UNTIL SHE COULD MANAGE TO ROLL BACKWARDS DOWN THIS HILL TO SAFETY. SHE THEN CHANGED ROUTES THAT HAD SUBSTANTIALLY MORE CONGESTION, BUT SMALLER HILLS. HILLS ARE A WAY OF LIFE IN THE ATLANTA METRO AREA, SO ARE HIGH TEMPERATURES IN JULY. SHE HAS MENTIONED THAT THIS VEHICLE HAS TERRIBLE ACCELERATION ON SOME LESSER HILLS IN HOT WEATHER OVER THE PAST 2 YEARS, BUT NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING AS DANGEROUS AS THIS INCIDENT.THIS MALADY HAS BEEN REPORTED A MINIMUM OF 2-3 TIMES TO THE HONDA DEALERSHIP SHE PURCHASED IT FROM, HERITAGE HONDA, ROME, GA. I WOULDN'T ALLOW HER TO USE IT UNTIL HONDA SORTED OUT THE MALFUNCTION. WELL, I SPENT THE DAY THERE, THEY DID COMPUTER ANALYSIS, TECHNICIAN INTERFACED WITH HONDA TECH LINE, EVEN SENT A "SNAPSHOT" OF THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER DATA WHEN IT ACTUALLY RECREATED THE SAME CONDITION FOR THE MECHANIC ON A STEEP HILL. NONE-THE-LESS, I LEFT THERE HOPEFUL THAT HONDA WOULD RESOLVE OUR DILEMMA. AFTER A DAY AND A HALF OF WAITING FOR SOME FEEDBACK, I WAS FINALLY INFORMED THE CAR WAS OPERATING PROPERLY. APPARENTLY, THE HYBRID BATTERIES REACHED A HIGH TEMPERATURE, WHICH FOR "SAFETY REASONS" DISABLED THE CIRCUITRY THAT "ASSISTS" THE CAR VIA THE "HYBRID ELECTRIC MOTOR" WHICH IN TURN LEAVES THE CAR COMPLETELY DEPENDENT ON THE UNDERSIZED GASOLINE ENGINE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HONDA CIVIC. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH THE VEHICLE OVERHEATED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP AND ATTEMPTED TO REMOVE THE OIL DIPSTICK BUT FOUND THAT THE DIPSTICK HAD MELTED DUE TO THE HEAT. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND REPLACED SEVERAL PARTS OF THE ENGINE. AFTER THE REPAIR, THE VEHICLE FAILED TWICE MORE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD CONTACT THE DEALER TO ENSURE THE MATTER WAS HANDLED APPROPRIATELY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 123,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 128,000.
