The contact owns a 2009 Honda Civic. The contact stated that on several occasions while making left or right turns, there was an abnormal clicking and clacking sound coming from the front of the vehicle and the steering column. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the lower control arm needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 220,000.

REAR WHEEL BEARINGS MAKINGS LOUD NOISE WHILE DRIVING. IF WHEEL BEARING WERE TO GO OUT IT WOULD BE A BIG SAFETY PROBLEMS WHILE DRIVING.
THE REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM SNAPPED WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A SIGNIFICANT ACCIDENT, AND UPON INVESTIGATION I REALIZE THAT THIS IS WHAT HAS BEEN CAUSING SIGNIFICANT TIRE WEAR ON MY CAR OVER THE YEARS AS WELL AS SHAKING AND LOUD BUZZING WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHER SPEEDS. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER HAD A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF DIFFICULTY LOADING AND UNLOADING THE CAR DUE TO THE REAR BUMPER COMING WITHIN INCHES OF HITTING THE GROUND BECAUSE IT WAS NO LONGER BEING SUPPORTED BY THE CONTROL ARM. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, BUT THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE STARTED MAKING A SQUEAKING SOUND WHEN MAKING A TURN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRONT END SUSPENSION ON BOTH THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER SIDES OF THE VEHICLE WAS DEFECTIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,971.

I HAD UNEVEN WEAR ON MY TIRES AND HAD AN ALIGNMENT ACCOMPLISHED BY A CERTIFIED MECHANIC AT FIRESTONE. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPT TO ALIGN THE CAMBER ON THE RIGHT BACK REAR TIRE THEY WERE FORCED TO LEAVE IT AT -1.7...WHICH IS .02 OUT OF TOLERANCE. THE CAMBER ADJUSTMENT ARE IS IN PROPER WORKING ORDER BUT THE MECHANIC SAYS THIS IS A CONSTANT PROBLEM WITH 2006-2009 HONDAS DUE TO THE ARMS DESIGN. THE REAR END HAS BEEN THE WORST, WHERE ONE WOULDN'T THINK GREAT TIRE WEAR AND FLAT SPOTS ETC. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MILES PER HOUR IN TOWN WHEN THE DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR FELL IN MY VIEW. IT WOULD NOT STAY UP. IT SPLIT INTO TWO PIECES THAT WOULD NOT GO BACK TOGETHER. I WENT TO THE HONDA DEALERSHIP TO GET 2 NEW REAR TIRES BECAUSE THE CAR KEEPS EATING UP THE REAR TIRES FOR SOME STRANGE REASON. I ASKED THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THIS VISOR AND A POSSIBLE RECALL AT THAT TIME IN NOVEMBER. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND THEY COULDN'T REPAIR MY DEFECTIVE VISOR FOR FREE. ON 8/15/11, VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO A HONDA CHICAGO FOR LOF & ROTATE. DROPPED OFF, CAME BACK, DROVE VEHICLE FOUND LOUD ROARING NOISE. TIRES WERE ROTATED THEN DISCOVERED THE TIRE THAT CAME OFF R/R WAS CUPPED. VEHICLE HAS 15K MILES, BARELY DRIVEN BY MY MOM THAT'S IN HER 60S, DOESN'T TRAVEL THE EXPRESSWAYS. HONDA CHICAGO WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING SO I MADE A COMPLAINT WITH HONDA CARE; WAS TOLD BRING IT BACK TO HONDA. HONDA CHICAGO SAID, "SIR, NOTHING WRONG WITH THE SUSPENSION AND MAY POSSIBLY NEED AN ALIGNMENT." I TOLD THE SERVICE ADVISOR THERE WAS NO COMPLAINT OF PULLING/DRIFTING. DEALER AND HONDA CARE ARE USELESS, NOTHING WAS DONE SO I PAID FOR A NEW TIRE SOMEWHERE ELSE. LAST WEEK, VEHICLE BACK AT HONDA ELMHURST AND THEN TO HONDA DES PLAINES FOR A 2ND OPINION FOR SAMETHING. BOTH DEALERS STATED NOTHING WRONG BUT THE FRONT TIRES CURRENTLY HAVE 3/32S, L/R 2/32S AND R/R 6/32S. THE DEALERSHIP DIDN'T EVEN OFFER TIRES TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS 18K MILES ON IT, A TICKING NOISE THAT COMES FOR THE VEHICLE WHEN IT'S IDLING IN REVERSE AND THE MYSTERIOUS R/R TIRE CONCERN. I CONTACTED HONDA CARE TODAY SPOKE WITH A CLAIM REP AND REQUESTED TO HAVE A HONDA REGIONAL REP OR SOMEONE OTHER THAN THE DEALERSHIP'S MECHANIC TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE SINCE IT'S BEEN TO 3 DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS. I ALSO REQUESTED TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE R/R TIRE THAT WAS REPLACED. I WAS TOLD, "WE'RE NOT DOING ANYTHING AT THIS TIME AND THAT I WOULD NEED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE HONDA DEALERSHIP IN ELMHURST, IL AND TO HAVE THE SERVICE MANAGER GET INVOLVED." THE CLAIM REP ALSO STATED THAT HE SPOKE WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER OF THAT SAME DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. I QUESTIONED THE CLAIM REP STATED THE SERVICE MANAGER WASN'T INVOLVED WITH THE REPAIRS ON MY VEHICLE, HIS SERVICE ADVISOR WAS SO OF COUSE HE WOULD TELL YOU WHAT'S ON THE INVOICE. *TR

THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH AND FELT A SEVERE VIBRATION ACCOMPANIED BY A WHINING NOISE FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT BOTH THE REAR DRIVER AND PASSENGER TIRES WERE OUT OF ROUND AND EXHIBITED SIGNIFICANT CUPPING. I REGULARLY ROTATED TIRES EVERY 7000K MILES. 3/20/12- I REPLACED ALL 4 TIRES AGAIN DUE TO SEVERE CUPPING ON BOTH REAR TIRES. HONDA DEALERSHIP STATES IT IS A CONTROL ARM ISSUE CAUSING TIRE DAMAGE BUT WOULD NOT PAY FOR PART OR LABOR. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED BY HONDA FOR FREE BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. *JS

I NOTICED A NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR END OF THE VEHICLE SO I TOOK IT TO THE NEAREST HONDA DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT THE REAR TIRES WERE SEVERELY CUPPED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE ALSO RECOMMENDED A FOUR WHEEL ALIGNMENT. ALTHOUGH THE CAR IS STILL COVERED UNDER ITS 3 YEAR 36000 MILE WARRANTY, I HAD TO PAY $366 OUT OF POCKET TO HAVE THE REAR TIRES REPLACED AND THE ALIGNMENT DONE. WHEN I VIEWED THE ALIGNMENT REPORT ALL ADJUSTMENTS WERE WITHIN SPECIFIED RANGE PRIOR TO ANY ADJUSTMENT BEING MADE. I BELIEVE THERE IS EITHER A PROBLEM WITH THE GOODYEAR EAGLE RS-A TIRES THAT WERE PUT ON THIS CAR AT THE FACTORY OR THERE IS SOME OTHER UNDERLYING REAR SUSPENSION ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED. *TR

DEFECTIVE REAR UPPER CONTROL ARMS OF OUR 2009 HONDA CIVIC CAUSED THE TIRES TO CUP SEVERELY, MAKING IT HARD TO HANDLE THE CAR, ESPECIALLY ON WET ROADS. ALL FOUR TIRES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IT IS SUCH A COMMON PROBLEM THAT, WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING AT THE CAR, AMERICAN HONDA AGREED TO PAY FOR TWO OF THE TIRES AND THE DEALERSHIP AGREED TO PAY FOR ONE, AFTER WE CALLED COMPLAINING OF THE PROBLEM. THEY DID NOT REPLACE THE CONTROL ARMS HOWEVER, AS THERE IS NO BETTER VERSION TO REPLACE THEM WITH. BECAUSE OF THAT, THE PROBLEM IS NOT SOLVED. THE NEW TIRES WILL ALSO WEAR UNEVENLY. UNLESS WE WERE TO PUT NEW TIRES ON EVERY SINGLE YEAR, IF NOT SOONER, WE WILL BE DRIVING ON DANGEROUS TIRES. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE WARRANTY IS UP? WILL DRIVERS PAY FOR FOUR NEW TIRES PER YEAR, OR BE UNSAFE ON THE ROAD BECAUSE THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY FOR HONDA'S DEFECT? THE SAD THING IS WE DIDN'T LEARN THE FIRST TIME. WE OWNED A 2007 CIVIC WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. HONDA CHANGED THE CONTROL ARMS AND PAID FOR TWO OF THE TIRES AFTER 20,000 MILES, THEN WHEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN AT 35,000 MILES, WE TRADED THE CAR IN FOR THE 2009 MODEL, HOPING THE PROBLEM HAD BEEN SOLVED IN THE NEWER MODEL. I OWN A 2009 HONDA CIVIC LX-S. IT NOW HAS 32,000 MILES ON IT AND THE REAR TIRES ARE COMPLETELY BALD. I DID SOME ONLINE RESEARCH AND FOUND THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH HONDA CIVIC'S. HONDA HAS A TSB ABOUT THE PROBLEM BUT THEY REFUSE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE TSB SAYS THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE REAR CONTROL ARMS AND THAT IS WHAT CAUSES THE EXCESSIVE WEAR ON THE TIRES. I CONTACTED A COUPLE OF DEALERS ABOUT GETTING MY CAR FIXED UNDER WARRANTY AND THEY GIVE YOU THE RUN AROUND AND DON'T WANT TO DO WHAT THE TSB SAYS THEY NEED TO DO. IF THERE ARE THIS MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME EXCESSIVE TIRE WEAR THEN THEY SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL AND FIX THE PROBLEM BEFORE A TIRE BLOWS AND CAUSES A WRECK AND SOMEONE GETS HURT. OWNER STARTED NOTICING UNEVEN (CUPPING) OF BOTH REAR TIRE APROX 10K AFTER PURCHASING VEHICLE (VEHICLE MILEAGE APROX 38000. KEPT DRIVING VEHICLE FOR AN ADDITIONAL 5K MILES, NOTICED 2 REAR TIRES WERE BALDING. TOOK VEHICLE TO AUTO SHOP, WAS INFORMED STRUTS AND SHOCKS WERE IN GOOD CONDITION. ALIGNMENT NOT THE PROBLEM EITHER. READ SO MANY BLOGS ONLINE ABOUT 2009 HONDA CIVIC PROBLEM WITH UPPER CONTROL ARM. BY DEALER NOT RECALLING UPPER CONTROL ARM (CAUSING ABNORMAL TIRE WEAR ON THE REAR OF VEHICLE), IT CAN CAUSE MANY CONSUMERS(DRIVERS) ON THE HIGHWAY TO BE DRIVING AT RISK BECAUSE CUPPED TIRES OR BALD TIRES IS VERY UNSAFE FOR ANY VEHICLE. THEY OFFERED NO OTHER ASSISTANCE TO REPAIR THE SUSPENSION OF THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 22,500. DID NOT THINK TOO MUCH ABOUT IT AS THERE WAS ALOT OF SNOW, ASSUMED THAT THERE WAS SNOW IN THE RIMS, DROVE THE CAR VERY LITTLE AT FIRST. BUSY LIFE CONTINUED TO DRIVE IN THE SPRING ASSUMING THAT MAYBE THE VIBRATION WAS DUE TO THE MUD ON THE COUNTRY ROADS. JUNE 10/10 . HAD THE WHEELS BALANCED AT 5505 KM BECAUSE OF THE VIBRATION. AT 9842 KM HAD OIL CHANGED NOTE SAYS TIRES DO NOT NEED ROTATION FRONT @ 8.5/32 AND BACK AT 8/32. AT 22,526 KM FRONT 2 AND LEFT REAR TIRES ALL AT 7/32 BUT RR REAR TIRE AT 5/32 PREMATURE WEAR,WAS TOLD THAT PROBLEM DUE TO MUD IMPACTED IN TIRE. REPLACED RR REAR TIRE WITH USED ONE , DATE JUNE 25/10. ODOMETER NOW READS 32,606 AND IT IS SEPT 15/10- TIME FOR WINTER TIRES. REPLACE SUMMER TIRES FOR WINTER ONES. KEEP SUMMER TIRES FOR 2011 SUMMER. DRIVE APPROX. 10,000 KM AND TAKE TO TIRE SHOP FOR ROTATION ONLY TO BE TOLD DOES NOT NEED ROTATION. BRING BACK CAR AT 52,547 KM FOR ROTATION ONLY TO FIND OUT RR REAR TIRE HAS A FLAT SPOT . TOOK TO HONDA WHO TOLD US THAT THE TIRE NEEDED REPLACEMENT AND THEY CHECKED THE REAR AND FRONT SUSPENSION., ADJUSTING THE REAR SUSPENSION TO THE MAX. AT THE SAME TIMETHEY MENTIONED THAT THE FRONT AND REAR ROTORS NEEDED MACHINING- PREMATURE WEAR ON THESE AS WELL. THEY SAID THAT THEY COULD TEAR THE RIGHT REAR SUSPENSION APART BUT THAT WOULD TAKE AWHILE, I SAID GO AHEAD. THEY THEN DECIDED NOT TO DO IT. SO WE TOOK THE CAR HOME AFTER THE ALIGNMENT AND TOLD THE TIRE SHOP THAT THEY NEEDED TO PROVIDE US WITH A NEW TIRE. THE TIRE SHOP MANAGER WAS VERY , VERY ANGRY. HE PRORATED THE OLD TIRE AND WE HAD TO PAID FOR THE USED PORTION. DROVE THE CAR JUST UNDER 10,000 KM WITH NEW TIRE, SO NO WEAR TO REPORT AT THAT TIME, ODOMETER NOW 61915. DEALER INDICATED THE CAUSE WAS IRREGULAR TIRE WEAR CAUSED 'CUPPING' OF THE TIRES WHEN THEY WERE MOUNTED IN THE BACK. I EXPERIENCED EVEN WORSE TIRE WEAR WITH MY 2006 HONDA CIVIC. HONDA ISSUED A TSB TO REPAIR THE REAR UPPER CONTROL ARMS IN THAT MODEL. I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT HONDA ENGINEERS WOULD HAVE RECTIFIED THIS PROBLEM IN NEWER MODELS BUT THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS. I HAVE A 2009 HONDA CIVIC THAT HAS 35,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE TAKEN CARE OF MY VEHICLE IN THE 1 YEAR I HAVE OWNED IT. MY CAR RECENTLY STARTED MAKING A LOUD THUMPING NOISE DRIVEN AT ALL SPEEDS. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN TO THE LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT IT AND THEY FIRST TRIED TO TELL ME THAT MY TIRES WERE WEARING DOWN AND I NEEDED AN ALIGNMENT. I SAID WAIT I HAD THIS SAME ISSUE WITH MY 2008 HONDA AND THE CONTROL ARM WAS RECALLED. THE DEALER KEPT SAYING THAT MY TIRES HAVE UNEVEN WEAR AND CUPPING. WHICH IS THE EXACT DESCRIPTION OF WHAT WOULD CAUSE SUCH DRAMATIC WEAR IS SUCH A QUICK TIME. THE DEALER THEN SAID THAT SINCE THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL THERE IS NOTHING THAT THEY COULD DO. MY CAR IS STILL UNDER FULL WARRANTY, BUT TECHNICALLY THEY CAN SAY THE CAUSE FOR THE UNEVEN WEAR " CUPPING." IT SOUNDS LIKE A HELICOPTER IS HITTING MY CAR WHEN I DRIVE MY NEW CAR. ON MY 2009 HONDA CIVIC THAT IS ONLY FIVE MONTHS OLD RIGHT AROUND 20,000 MILES I NOTICED A VIBRATION IN THE REAR END. THIS VIBRATION GOT WORSE QUICKLY. AT 20,560 I HAD THE TIRES LOOKED AT AND BOTH TIRES HAVE GOOD TREAD LEFT BUT HAVE EXCESSIVE CUPPING IN A DIAGONAL PATTERN THE SAME AS THE 06/07 TSB. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER I BOUGHT THE CAR FROM. THE SERVICE DEPT STATED THAT THERE WAS NO TSB OR RECALL AND THAT THEY COULD CHECK THE ALIGNMENT BUT IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AT 12,000 MILES (MEANING I WOULD BE CHARGED) AND EVEN THOUGH HONDA SOLD ME THE CAR WITH THESE TIRES ON IT THEY DID NOT PRODUCE THE TIRES AND THEY WERE NOT COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTY. NHTSA NEEDS TO ASSIST CONSUMERS BY LOOKING INTO THIS (NUMEROUS POSTING ON OTHER INTERNET SITES) BEFORE OWNERS IGNORE THIS PROBLEM AND SOMEONE IS KILLED BY THE TIRE FAILURE DUE TO A PROBLEM IN THE REAR END. *TR

2008 CIVIC COUPE LX WITH BRIDGESTONE EL 400 TIRES BEGAN SHAKING AND VIBRATING AT 13,000 MILES. REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND TIRE ROTATIONS ARE ON RECORD, YET ZIMMERMAN HONDA IN ROCK ISLAND, IL CLAIMS THAT THE UNEVEN TIRE WEAR AND SUBSEQUENT SECOND SET OF TIRES TO BE REPLACED ARE MY FAULT AND WILL BE AT MY EXPENSE. I DID A LITTLE RESEARCH AND DISCOVERED THAT THE '06 AND '07 CIVICS HAVE A SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THE "C" ARM LEADING TO UNEVEN TIRE WEAR. OBVIOUSLY THE PROBLEM WAS NEVER FIXED DURING THE ASSEMBLY FOR THE NEWER MODELS OF HONDA CIVICS. CAR IS NOW AT 27,000 MILES, NEEDING NEW TIRE AGAIN!!!!! COST SO FAR IS $600 AND I AM VERY UNHAPPY WITH HONDA AND ITS DEALERS. I FEEL AS IF I AM GETTING THE RUNAROUND AND AM MADE TO FEEL AS IF THEIR MANUFACTURERS DEFECTS ARE MY FAULT. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HONDA CIVIC. WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH, THE CONTACT STRUCK ANOTHER VEHICLE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. SHE DOES NOT KNOW HOW THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE DETACHED FROM HER VEHICLE AFTER STRIKING THE OTHER VEHICLE FROM A RIGHT ANGLE. THE ENTIRE FRONT END CAME OFF OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE AND IT WAS UNABLE TO BE DRIVEN. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED FROM THE SCENE AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE DEALER ADVISED HER TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THEM SO IT CAN BE REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45.
