My 2002 Honda CRV's ENTIRE Passenger Side Airbag Assembly was REPLACED on 11-20-2019, per Honda. This was done as (per Honda) the Inflator bolt was broken and the applicable part to remedy the recall would not be available for approximately 3 months. An open recall (NHTSA Recall # 19V-501) from 06-27-2019 still is showing on my vehicle - If the ENTIRE Passenger Side Airbag Assembly was replaced on 11-20-2019, there should be no open NHTSA recall on my vehicle issued prior to 11-20-2019.

The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the front passenger's side air bag needed to be replaced. The contact related the failure to an unknown recall. Additionally, the contact stated that the front passenger's side seat belt and the rear middle seat belt buckles were not latching securely as designed. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 01V351000 (Seat Belts) however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.

The contact owned a 2002 Honda CR-V. The contact had received a recall notice for NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V501000 (Air Bags) and had the passenger air bag serviced under the recall at the dealer. On July 4, 2022, the contact heard a loud boom which she assumed was a firework; however, her neighbor informed her that her vehicle had caught fire. The fire department was called and the fire was extinguished. A fire report was filed; no injuries were reported and no property was damaged. A fire technician was sent to her home to investigate the fire; his investigation led him to believe that the passenger air bag had caught fire which caused the failure. The technician suggested the contact call an engineer to officially determine the cause of the fire. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The dealer was also notified of the failure and they informed her that an investigation would be performed. The vehicle was destroyed by the fire. The failure mileage was approximately 230,000.

AIR BAG DON'T WORK

AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AND WHEN I RAN MY "VIN" NUMBER ON YOUR WEBSITE, I FOUND OUT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS. NEXT I TOOK MY CR-V INTO NORM REEVES HONDA IN IRVINE, CA. ON 12/9/2019 FOR MY 10:30 AM APPOINTMENT. AFTER THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG IINFLATOR RECALL PROBLEM WAS RESOLVED, I PICKED MY CR-V UP AND WENT HOME. MY CR-V HAD (115,230) MILES ON IT AT THAT POINT. MY NEXT AIR BAG PROBLEM OCCURRED ON 8/18/2020 WHEN MY CR-V HAD (116,359) MILES ON IT. NOW I HAD THE "SIDE AIR BAG OFF" LIGHT COME ON. IT WOULD COME ON AND THEN GO AWAY AND THEN COME BACK ON AGAIN EVENTUALLY. AT THAT POINT, I CALLED UP NORM REEVES HONDA IN IRVINE AGAIN TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THIS CHECKED OUT. ON 8/25/2020 AT (116,418) MILES, I DROPPED OFF MY CR-V FOR MY 10:30 AM APPOINTMENT. I HAD AN INKLING THAT THIS NEW AIR BAG LIGHT COMING ON MIGHT HAVE HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE ORIGINAL AIR BAG RECALL THAT WAS TAKEN CARE OF. AFTER THE CAR HAD BEEN CHECKED OUT, I WAS TOLD THAT ALL THE "DTC'S" WERE PULLED AND THAT THE "SIDE AIR BAG OFF LIGHT" HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ORIGINAL AIR BAG RECALL THEY TOOK CARE OF. ON MY WAY HOME, I NOTICED A NEW LIGHT HAD COME ON NOW, THE (SRS) LIGHT. IT WAS THEN THAT I IMMEDIATELY TURNED AROUND AND WENT BACK TO NORM REEVES TO INFORM THEM OF THIS.THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS LIGHT COMING ON AND THAT SOONER OR LATER IT WOULD HAVE COME ON, SOMEWHERE DOWN THE ROAD IN THE FUTURE. I QUESTIONED THIS AND FRANKLY HAD A DIFFICULT TIME BELIEVING THIS! THAT "SRS" LIGHT HAD NEVER COME ON BEFORE SINCE I'VE OWNED THE CAR. NOW THAT LIGHT IS ALWAYS ON 100% OF THE TIME. THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME IT'S A COMPUTER RELATED ISSUE THAT'S CAUSING THE PROBLEM AND QUOTED ME A PRICE OF APPROX. $1200 TO GET IT REPAIRED. I SAID TO HIM, "ARE YOU SERIOUS?" AND SHOOK MY HEAD IN DISGUST AS I WALKED AWAY. I THINK THEY PULLED ONE OVER ON ME. DO YOU AGREE?

TAKATA RECALL I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE X5C FOR MY 2002 HONDA CR-V BUT HONDA HAS STATED IN 2 DIFFERENT PHONE CALLS THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE THE RESOURCES TO FIX MY CAR AT THIS TIME. DURING BOTH PHONE CALLS, THE HONDA REPRESENTATIVES TOLD ME NOT TO HAVE ANYONE RIDE IN THE PASSENGER FRONT SEAT. THE NHTSA WEBSITE LISTS THE 2002 CR-V AS ONE OF THE CARS THAT SHOULD NOT BE DRIVEN EXCEPT TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. MY DEALER, MENDENHALL AUTO IN JUNEAU, AK, HAS ADVISED ME THAT MY CR-V IS PART OF PHASE 5 AND THAT HONDA WILL NOT AUTHORIZE REPAIR OF MY VEHICLE AT THIS TIME. BASED ON THE INFORMATION FROM NHTSA AND HONDA, MY CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE BUT NEITHER HONDA NOR THE AUTHORIZED DEALER IS WILLING TO REPAIR IT. MENDENHALL AUTO STATED IT WILL PROBABLY BE NEXT SUMMER BEFORE REPAIR WILL BE AUTHORIZED. HONDA REFUSED TO GIVE ME A TIMELINE ESTIMATE FOR REPAIR, JUST REPEATEDLY STATING THEY WOULD CALL ME WHEN MORE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND POTENTIALLY LIFE-THREATENING.

"TAKATA RECALL" MY HONDA-CRV WAS HIT BEHIND BY A YOUNG LADY IN NOVEMBER 2016. SHE ADMITTED HER FAULT AND HER INSURANCE COMPANY PAID FOR THE REPAIR TO THE GARAGE.THE REAR BUMPER WAS SEVERELY DENTED AND IT CREATED SOME OTHER MECHANICAL PROBLEMS AND THE GARAGE OWNER FIXED THEM.I DO NOT HAVE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT IT. EMPHATICALLY, I SHOULD SAY: # 1. WHEN THIS ACCIDENT TOOK PLACE THE AIR-BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. IT IS A BIG QUESTION ? # 2. THE GARAGE OWNER, DURING THE REPAIR DAYS ASKED ME TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER GARAGE WHO DID THE 'WHEEL ALIGNMENTS." ONE OF THE PERSONS THERE TOLD ME " THE EXCEL IS NOT GOOD/DEFECTIVE AND NEED TO BE FIXED OR REPLACED... SOMETHING LIKE THAT AS FAR AS I CAN REMEMBER." I SAID THAT I CAN NOT AFFORD TO DO THAT NOW AND I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE BACK.I TOLD ABOUT IT TO MY GARAGE OWNER. HE INSPECTED IT AND SAID " CAN NOT SEE SUCH A THING, BUT WILL SEE LATER." SINCE THEN, I USE THE CAR WITH SUSPICIOUS AND SCARE TO DRIVE FAR AWAY PLACES. NEVER DRIVE ON FREE-WAYS. # 3. I GOT A DASH BOARD WARNING IN SEPTEMBER THIS YEAR. THE GARAGE OWNER SAID THAT ENGINE OIL NEED TO BE CHANGED AND I DID SO ON 09.26.2017. BUT STILL THE LIGHT IS ON ? I THINK IT SAYS " MAINTENANCE REQUIRED." WHY IS THE LIGHT IS ON EVEN AFTER OIL CHANGE IS DONE ? I DO NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE EVERYDAY AS I CAN NOT AFFORD GAS MONEY. WE ARE STATE BENEFICIARIES AND THE STATE HAS CATEGORIZED US AS LOW INCOME FAMILY. MYSELF AND THREE FAMILY MEMBERS MOST OF THE TIME TRAVEL BY BUS. I HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES. AS I DROVE ALONG I-575 - A 4-LANE HIGHWAY - I NOTICED A KIND OF POWER SURGE FROM MY ENGINE. MY SPEEDOMETER REGISTERED 80 MPH! I APPLIED THE BRAKES BUT WAS UNABLE TO SLOW THE CAR MORE THAN 20-30 MPH, AND THEN IT STARTED TO CREEP BACK UP. I EXITED AT THAT POINT, KNOWING I NEEDED HELP. I WAS STILL GOING MUCH TOO FAST. I LOOKED FOR A SERVICE STATION AND NOT ONLY WAS THERE NONE, WITHIN SECONDS I WAS FACED WITH A RED LIGHT WITH 4 LANES OF CROSS TRAFFIC (GEORGE BUSBY PARKWAY) - I COULDN'T STOP THE CAR! SO I TOOK IT OFF THE ROAD IN A CONTROLLED CRASH, GOING OVER THE CURB, 6 OR SO FEET OF GRASS, A HUGE HEDGE, AND CRASHED INTO A VERY TALL, MATURE CRAPE MYRTLE. THANK GOD THE CAR FINALLY STOPPED. I WAS FORTUNATE THE CRAPE MYRTLE CONSISTED OF MULTIPLE TRUNKS RATHER THAN BEING AN OAK OR SIMILAR. THE CRAPE MYRTLE MANAGED TO DISSIPATE THE IMPACT OF MY CAR AND I ONLY SUSTAINED A BROKEN WRIST. THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. MY INSURANCE COMPANY IS CHARGING ME WITH DRIVING OUT OF CONTROL!!!!

CAR STARTS AND RUNS FINE BUT THE SRS LIGHT REMAINS ON. IS THERE A WARRENTEE WITH THE SAFETY SYSTEMS.

I HAVE BEEN CONTACTED BY HONDA A COUPLE OF TIMES SINCE THEM, ONLY TO HEAR THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE THE PARTS YET. I RECEIVED A LETTER TODAY, JULY 17, 2015 FROM THE AUTOMOBILE DIVISION OF HONDA STATING ONCE AGAIN THAT MY CAR'S AIRBAGS ARE BEING RECALLED. I WAS POINTED TO THIS PAGE DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT HAS BEEN OVER 6 MONTHS SINCE I WAS FIRST CONTACTED BY MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE YET TO BE ABLE TO DELIVER THE SERVICE OF SERVICING MY AIRBAGS!

THE SRS LIGHT ON MY INSTRUMENT PANEL RECENTLY ACTIVATED WHICH I FIGURED WAS A RESULT OF THE RECENT AIR BAG RECALL AND WOULD BE RECTIFIED WHEN THE DEALER REPLACED THE AIR BAG PARTS AS PART OF THE RECALL. UNFORTUNATELY, AFTER HAVING BOTH PASSENGER AND DRIVER AIR BAG RECALL WORK COMPLETED ON 6/30/15, THE SRS LIGHT REMAINS LIT. COST OF REPAIR WAS ESTIMATED BY DEALER AT $850 AND APPARENTLY NOT COVERED BY HONDA AS PART OF THE RECALL(!) EVEN THOUGH I WAS TOLD THE SRS SYSTEM CONTROLS BOTH THE AIR BAG AND SEAT BELT TENSIONING SYSTEMS. NOT SURE HOW THESE UNITS WOULD WEAR OUT OTHER THAN BY INTERNAL FAILURE SINCE THE AIR BAGS FORTUNATELY HAVEN'T EVER BEEN DEPLOYED- SURE SEEMS LIKE IT SHOULD BE A NO BRAINER RECALL ITEM GIVEN THE POTENTIAL LIFE SAFETY DANGER THE FAILURE OF THIS SYSTEM POSES.

SHE BLACKED OUT AND HER CAR RAN OFF THE ROAD, IMPACTED A MILE MARKER SIGN, STRUCK AN EMBANKMENT AND HER CAR OVERTURNED FOUR TIMES. SHE MIRACULOUSLY SURVIVED THE ACCIDENT BUT HAD A CONCUSSION AND A SEVERE LACERATION TO HER LEFT EAR. SHE WAS UNCONSCIOUS WHEN THE RESCUE TEAM ARRIVED AND WAS AIRLIFTED TO ROANOKE FOR MEDICAL CARE. SINCE THE ACCIDENT SHE HAS BEEN SUFFERING FROM POST CONCUSSIVE SYNDROME (CONSTANT HEADACHES, MEMORY LOSS, INSOMNIA, DIFFICULTY CONCENTRATING). ACCORDING TO A TRUCKER WHO SAW THE ACCIDENT SHE NEVER HIT HER BRAKES AND WAS TRAVELING AT 70 MPH. SHE NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTICE FROM HONDA AND WAS ONLY MADE AWARE OF THE RECALL WHEN TAKING HER CAR IN FOR OTHER MAINTENANCE. WHILE HER INJURIES WERE NOT FATAL, NOR DID SHE HAVE ANY BROKEN BONES, SHE DID SUFFER A CONCUSSION AND HAS HAD HEADACHES FOR THREE MONTHS. THE DRIVER AIRBAG FAILED TO DEPLOY IN MY 2002 HONDA CRV WHEN MY FRONT END CRASHED INTO THE SIDE OF A PICK UP TRUCK THAT PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF ME ON THE HIGHWAY. I WAS GOING 45 BEFORE IMPACT SO AFTER BREAKING, ESTIMATE 35-40 MPH WHEN I HIT. MY PASSENGER AIRBAG DEPLOYED. AGAIN, MY DRIVER AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. IMPACT WAS HARD ENOUGH TO TOTAL THE CAR. I FRACTURED MY STERNUM, A MODERATELY SERIOUS INJURY THAT 2 DOCTORS TOLD ME DOESN'T HAPPEN ANYMORE DUE TO AIRBAGS. MY SRS LIGHT CAME ON 6 MONTHS AGO. KNOWING THAT WAS A SAFETY WARNING WE IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE CAR TO A HONDA DEALER. THE DIAGNOSTICS REVEALED A DEFECTIVE DRIVER SEAT BELT BUCKLE, WHICH THEY REPLACED. THEY THEN CLEARED THE SRS LIGHT AND IT HAS NOT COME BACK ON. I SPECIFICALLY ASKED ABOUT THE AIRBAG AND THEY SAID THOSE ARE FINE. I'VE BEEN TO 3 LAW FIRMS. THEY ALL SAID IT APPEARS THAT THE DEALER PERFORMED AS THE DIAGNOSTICS DICTATED AND THAT I JUST WASN'T INJURED ENOUGH TO TAKE ON HONDA. IT WOULD COST A FIRM ROUGHLY $100K OVER 2 YEARS TO FILE A LAWSUIT AND "ONLY" A FRACTURED STERNUM AND 4-6 WEEKS OFF WORK WOULDN'T PAY OUT ENOUGH TO COVER ATTORNEYS FEES. THEY ALL SAID A PERSON NEEDS TO BE PARALYZED OR DEAD TO BE WORTH TACKLING A BIG CORPORATION. I CALLED HONDA. THEY SAID SOMETIMES ONLY 1 AIRBAG GOES OFF DEPENDING ON HOW THE CAR IS HIT AND WHILE THEY CARE, THEY DON'T DO INVESTIGATIONS. I REQUESTED AN AIRBAG INVESTIGATION FROM MY INSURANCE COMPANY. THEY NOTED THAT REQUEST AS PART OF THE SUBROGATION PROCESS. FROM MY PERSPECTIVE, IF FRACTURED STERNUM ARE AN INJURY OF THE PAST BECAUSE AIRBAGS PREVENT THAT INJURY, AND THE FORCE OF THE IMPACT WAS GREAT ENOUGH TO FRACTURE MY STERNUM, THEN THE FORCE OF THE FULL FRONTAL IMPACT WAS ENOUGH TO TRIGGER BOTH AIRBAGS. THE SRS LIGHT CAME ON IN MY 2002 HONDA CRV WHICH HAS ONLY 35000 MILES. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHO INFORMED ME THAT THE SRS MUST HAVE WENT BAD AND IT WOULD COST $700 TO FIX. I ASKED IF THE LIGHT ON COULD BE CAUSED BY THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BELT LOCKING UP REGULARLY WHICH TEMPORARILY DOES NOT ALLOW YOU TO GET ENOUGH SEAT BELT TO ACTUALLY REACH THE BUCKLE AND THE DEALER SAID THAT MIGHT BE THE PROBLEM BUT I STILL WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE WHOLE SRS SYSTEM. I ASKED IF THIS WAS A RECALL AND HE SAID NOT AT THIS TIME. I NOW HAVE CHECKED THE RECALLS AND SEE THAT THE SEAT BELTS AS WELL AS THE AIR BAGS HAVE BEEN RECALLED AND I HAVE NOT BEEN NOTIFIED OF EITHER BY THE DEALER AND I WOULD THINK THIS WOULD BE IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED ESPECIALLY SINCE THE SRS LIGHT CAME ON WHICH IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO BOTH OF THESE SAFETY DEVICES. *JB

GOOD AFTERNOON, MY NAME IS [XXX] AND I AM SUBMITTING A COMPLAINT REGARDING THE HONDA CRV (YEAR 2002). ON 6/25/2004, I WAS REAR ENDED WHILE WAITING ON A METERED FREEWAY ENTRANCE RAMP IN MILWAUKEE, WI. THE OTHER DRIVER DID NOT KNOW THAT THE RAMP WAS METERED AND REAR ENDED MY VEHICLE BETWEEN 40 - 50 MPH; MY CAR WAS THEN PUSHED INTO THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. ALTHOUGH IT WAS A HIGH SPEED COLLISION ON THE FRONT AND REAR, THE AIRBAG ON MY 2002 HONDA CRV DID NOT INFLATE. I HIT MY HEAD ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND HAD FACIAL BRUISING AND A LARGE GASH ON MY FOREHEAD REQUIRING APPROXIMATELY 20 STITCHES. MY CAR IS TOTALED; THE HOOD IS CRUSHED AND THE REAR END WAS PUSHED IN APPROXIMATELY 3 FEET. I BOUGHT MY CRV NEW IN 2002, PARTIALLY ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT IT WAS A SAFE VEHICLE THAT WOULD PROTECT ME IN THE EVENT OF A CAR ACCIDENT. ON FRIDAY, I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP WHERE MY CAR IS SERVICED (RUSS DARROW HONDA IN MILWAUKEE, WI) TO MAKE CERTAIN THAT I HAD NOT MISSED ANY RECALLS, AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT MY CAR WAS CURRENT WITH ALL RECALLS (THERE HAVE BEEN NO AIRBAG SPECIFIC RECALLS FOR MY YEAR). IF MY AIRBAG HAD INFLATED, I MOST LIKELY WOULD HAVE WALKED AWAY FROM THE SCENE WITHOUT ANY LASTING REMINDERS. MANY CONSUMERS CONSIDER A VEHICLE SAFETY RATING AND AIRBAG QUALITY WHEN CHOOSING A NEW VEHICLE. SINCE YOU CANNOT TEST AIRBAGS EXCEPT IN A LAB ENVIRONMENT OR ACCIDENT SITUATION, CONSUMERS MUST RELY ON THE TRUSTWORTHINESS OF THE MANUFACTURER AND HOPE THAT THEY WORK WHEN REQUIRED.
